  1. everyone. Great to be in church with you today. You have already blessed me with your singing.

  2. It was phenomenal to be at the front this morning and to hear you sing those songs with a great deal

  3. of gusto and obviously with a great deal of connection in terms of what we're seeking to do

  4. as a church. So thank you for that, for serving me and serving each other in that way. Hopefully

  5. you've got to serve an outline in front of you. It's got some Bible passages in front of it.

  6. If you haven't got that, you can also get on the St. Paul's app or stick your hand up and someone

  7. will get one to you. The great English theologian and pastor John Stott captured the urgent need

  8. for unity in diversity for the local church in his commentary on the book of Ephesians,

  9. which I've been reading in process of preparing these messages through Ephesians.

  10. He wrote,

  11. It is simply impossible with any shred of Christian integrity to go on proclaiming that Jesus,

  12. by his cross, has abolished the old divisions and created a single new humanity of love,

  13. while at the same time we are contradicting our message by tolerating social, racial,

  14. or other barriers within the church fellowship. We need to get the failures of the church on our

  15. conscience to feel the offense to Christ, to weep over the credibility gap between the church's talk

  16. and the church's walk, to repent of our readiness to excuse and even condone our failures,

  17. and to determine to do something about it. I wonder if anything is more urgent today for the honor of Christ

  18. and for the spread of the gospel than that the church should be and should be seen to be

  19. what by God's purpose and Christ's achievement it already is. A single new humanity,

  20. a model of human community, a family of reconciled brothers and sisters who love their father

  21. and love each other, the evident dwelling place of God by his spirit. Only then will the world believe

  22. in Christ as peacemaker. Only then will God receive the glory due his name. I just read that and just want

  23. to applaud it. Absolutely, fundamentally true and something that we are deliberately working towards

  24. as a church here at St. Paul's. In the next few weeks, we're looking at Ephesians 4, 1 to 16.

  25. To discover the means that God uses to maintain the unity of such a diverse bunch of people.

  26. If you've just joined us today, we are in our annual vision series. We're in Ephesians because this

  27. letter is about the church, it's about who the church is. And we're also looking at the year ahead

  28. and aligning ourselves to what God has in store for us next as we plan to move forward in our life

  29. together in this setting. So first of all, as we looked at last week on your service outline,

  30. gospel-centered unity is who God has made us to be. Over the last two weeks, we've seen that God,

  31. the creator, the God of the Bible, the creator of all things, has overwhelmed us by his grace and his mercy

  32. by giving us every spiritual blessing in the Lord Jesus Christ. That is, God has held no blessing back

  33. from us at all. He has lavished his grace on us in Jesus. We have been redeemed, we've been adopted,

  34. we've been given eternal life through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We've seen again and

  35. again the heart of the Christian message which separates Christianity from every other religion in the world

  36. and it's the gospel. It's on the back of your service sheet and it is about everything that God has

  37. achieved for you without a single bit of effort on your behalf. And the effect of the gospel is it so

  38. breaks us down that it also breaks down the barriers of hostility that we have built up between us and

  39. God and us and other people. The pride that causes humanity to reject God and to live independent of

  40. him has been dealt with as the son of God himself humbled himself, became one of us, takes God's judgment

  41. for our sin upon himself. And because of his work of humility on our behalf, we have been liberated from

  42. selfishness and the ego to live, to praise and to serve. We've been set free to be who God has called us

  43. to be, who God made us to be in the first place. And the gospel also breaks down the deep divisions

  44. within humanity. In the gospel, Jesus has broken down the walls of hostility and he's building up a new

  45. eternal and united family of love and peace. It's called the church in Ephesians chapter 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  46. People with centuries of hatred have now been united in Jesus because they're making Jesus the main

  47. thing. They can do it because they've been given a much more significant identity in Jesus. In Jesus, we receive

  48. the praise and the affirmation of the praiseworthy. No higher praise can you get than the praise of the

  49. praiseworthy. This changes your life. Our new identity as God's much loved children means it changes us from the

  50. inside out because it fills us up on the inside, gives us everything that we want for in life.

  51. And because of the amazing theological realities of chapters 1 through to 3, Paul urges the Ephesians in

  52. chapter 4 at the very beginning and us to live a life worthy of the calling that you have received.

  53. He's calling us to be who we've been saved to be. The word worthy in verse 1 is translated from the word

  54. axios in the original New Testament language. This is the word from which we get our English word

  55. axiom, which means to be of equal weight. Paul is saying we should live lives equal to the great blessings

  56. described in chapters 1 to 3. How are we to live lives worthy of having every spiritual blessing in the

  57. gospel of the gospel of the Lord Jesus? Well, the remainder of Ephesians unpacks that for us as we go

  58. through. But the immediate charge in chapter 4 verses 1 to 16 is to live lives worthy of our calling by

  59. living in unity as God's new family. See in verse 3, make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit

  60. through the bond of peace. There is one body and one spirit just as you were called to one hope when you were

  61. called. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

  62. Now, Paul has already been emphasizing our unity in this letter. In chapter 2, he uses the language of household

  63. household to describe it, which is the image of family. It's family language in the New Testament.

  64. He also uses the image of a building to stress our unity, our togetherness, our oneness. We're cemented

  65. together like blocks. Now, he takes us a step further and uses the image of the body to emphasize

  66. our unity. We are one body. And it's an image of intimate connection.

  67. There are very few certainties in life. I mean, people say death and taxes are a certainty.

  68. There's another certainty that I generally operate with day by day, was when I went to bed last night,

  69. I didn't have the expectation that when I woke up in the morning, my hand wasn't going to be there.

  70. I just assumed when I went to bed at night, my hand was going to be there in the morning

  71. that it hadn't just decided,

  72. I'm off to get my nails done.

  73. And it just left the body. It just doesn't do that.

  74. Intimately connected. Your body is not sewn together. It's not stapled together. It grows together.

  75. And that's what happens when you have new life in Christ. It's an image of intimate connection.

  76. And he uses the same image in other parts of the New Testament, like 1 Corinthians.

  77. Notice Paul calls us here to keep the unity that we have.

  78. He's saying that the unity that we have together isn't something that we can attain.

  79. It's not something that we gain.

  80. We only keep it.

  81. We are called into unity.

  82. And Paul alludes to this when he says,

  83. You were called to one hope when you were called.

  84. What he's saying is that our experience of new life in Jesus

  85. is what creates the unity that we have to keep.

  86. There is only one hope for humanity.

  87. There's one hope and the only hope is salvation in Jesus.

  88. New life in him.

  89. Acts 4 says there is no other name by which people can be saved than the name of Jesus.

  90. But our unity is also grounded in the nature of God himself.

  91. This is about who God is in and of his essence.

  92. Our God who made us in his image is himself unified.

  93. Three persons of the Godhead but operating as one in total perfect unity.

  94. The very nature of their operation is mutual love relationships.

  95. Each member of the Godhead exists for the other members of the Godhead serving the other.

  96. Technical term is perichoresis.

  97. Which means mutual indwelling.

  98. Mutual love sacrifice and service for the other.

  99. The Holy Trinity is mentioned here.

  100. Spirit verse 4.

  101. Lord verse 5.

  102. God the Father verse 6.

  103. Each of the seven great unities mentioned in verses 4 to 6

  104. is connected to one of the persons of the Trinity.

  105. After all is said and done, in all of our diversity, in all of our difference,

  106. we have the same Father being rescued by the same Son and indwelled by the same Spirit.

  107. We are his family.

  108. We are his temple.

  109. We are his body.

  110. Our unity is eternal.

  111. It is unbreakable because we have been united with the eternal and the unbreakable.

  112. And even though our unity is a gift,

  113. verse 3 calls us to be diligent in working every effort to keep it.

  114. Make every effort means to spare no effort.

  115. It is a matter for urgent, diligent and continuous activity.

  116. Unity is not something that gets worked out through committees and task force.

  117. Chapter 4 reveals two means that God works in us

  118. so that we keep the unity that we have been given.

  119. The rest of the New Testament,

  120. I want to use the rest of the New Testament to back up some of this

  121. over the next couple of weeks.

  122. Those two things are spiritual fruit and spiritual gifts.

  123. As members of God's family,

  124. he's in the process of changing who we are and what we do

  125. so that it more reflects his family values.

  126. So over the next three weeks,

  127. I want to talk about being a community that serves,

  128. serves God, serves each other, serves the world.

  129. And it's essential, however, that I begin where God begins.

  130. The fruit of the Spirit.

  131. Not the gifts.

  132. We want to talk about gifts.

  133. We want to talk about my talents, my abilities,

  134. what I can bring to the table.

  135. God doesn't start there.

  136. He starts with your character.

  137. He starts with who you are.

  138. Galatians 5, it's on your service sheet.

  139. Galatians 5 is a list of the fruit.

  140. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,

  141. faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

  142. Notice the word fruit is singular in its original language,

  143. which means there is one fruit,

  144. one fruit that has seven components to it.

  145. Every Christian should have the fruit of the Spirit

  146. as they're outlined in Galatians 5 verses 22 to 23.

    Galatians 5:22–23

  147. Every single one of the components.

  148. Some of us are naturally default to being more patient than others,

  149. but not necessarily courageous.

  150. Every Christian must be balanced in all the fruit.

  151. There's one fruit with seven different components.

  152. You're meant to be growing in all of them, collectively.

  153. But no Christian, apart from Jesus,

  154. if you want to call him a Christian,

  155. has all the gifts of the Spirit.

  156. We must all have all fruit,

  157. but we don't all have all gifts.

  158. Spiritual fruit is something we are,

  159. but a spiritual gift is something we do.

  160. That's why fruit has supremacy over gifts in the New Testament.

  161. And it's why we need to talk about it first.

  162. But that's not what our culture wants to do.

  163. Our culture values gifts, talents, abilities,

  164. as unfortunately the church often does.

  165. We often get blamed by gifts and talents and abilities.

  166. It is perilous to honor gifts over godly character,

  167. or for gifts to be mistaken for godly character.

  168. The Bible indicates it's possible to...

  169. So hear this.

  170. Very important.

  171. The Bible indicates it is possible to touch lives through gifts,

  172. while your own spiritual growth is in a downward spiral.

  173. In fact, there have been unregenerated people,

  174. like Judas Iscariot and those mentioned in Matthew 7,

    Matthew 7:22

  175. verses 22 and 23,

  176. who come into the church,

  177. and whose natural talents God used

  178. to convert and to build up,

  179. but who later showed that they were never really Christian,

  180. according to 1 John 2, verse 19.

    1 John 2:19

  181. 1 Corinthians 13.

  182. I've got that in front of you as well.

  183. We see a clear example of the need

  184. for Christian character over Christian giftedness.

  185. Church of Corinth.

  186. We've just spent a bit of time in Corinthians,

  187. but the Church of Corinth in 1 Corinthians

  188. was a growing congregation,

  189. blessed with abundant gifts in tongues,

  190. verse 1,

  191. prophecy, verse 2,

  192. teaching generosity and social concern,

  193. in verse 3,

  194. and yet the chapter also reveals

  195. all the ways in which this Corinthian church

  196. was ungodly.

  197. They were impatient and proud,

  198. verse 4,

  199. envious, critical, rude, jealous,

  200. self-absorbed, egotistical,

  201. and Paul went on to so far as to say

  202. that it was possible

  203. to have all of these gifts

  204. in a dynamic church

  205. and yet, in his words,

  206. to be nothing.

  207. Most Bible commentators agree

  208. that Paul is saying

  209. it is possible

  210. to do miracles

  211. by the power of God

  212. and have revelations

  213. and not even to be a Christian.

  214. To have no character at all.

  215. No inward work of the Spirit at all.

  216. In other words,

  217. it's possible for you

  218. to do ministry

  219. through the power of God

  220. without any grace in your heart

  221. or without knowing,

  222. as verse 8 says,

  223. his true love that never fails.

  224. That's why Jesus said,

  225. by their fruit,

  226. you will know his disciples

  227. rather than by their gifts.

  228. By their fruit,

  229. you will know his disciples.

  230. Love, joy, peace,

  231. humility cannot grow and flourish

  232. when our hearts are far from God.

  233. But teaching,

  234. evangelism,

  235. counselling,

  236. leading,

  237. can.

  238. So friends,

  239. the danger is

  240. that we look to our ministry activity

  241. as evidence

  242. that God is with us

  243. or as a way to earn God's favour.

  244. If, however,

  245. we are remembering the gospel,

  246. if we're rejoicing

  247. in having received

  248. every spiritual blessing in Jesus,

  249. then our ministry

  250. will be a sacrifice

  251. of thanksgiving.

  252. And the result

  253. will be acts done in love,

  254. humility,

  255. patience and tenderness.

  256. If our hearts

  257. are not solely centred

  258. in the saving work of Jesus

  259. and if we're not speaking

  260. the gospel

  261. into our hearts regularly,

  262. we will,

  263. by default,

  264. seek to control God,

  265. to attract his favour

  266. with,

  267. and I'll use the language

  268. of 1 Corinthians 13,

  269. attract his favour

  270. with our clanging symbols

  271. of service,

  272. noted by the telltale signs

  273. of impatience,

  274. irritability,

  275. pride,

  276. hurt feelings,

  277. generosity,

  278. jealousy,

  279. sorry,

  280. not generosity,

  281. lack of generosity,

  282. jealousy,

  283. and boasting.

  284. We will identify

  285. with our ministry

  286. and we will make

  287. our ministry

  288. an extension

  289. of ourselves.

  290. We will be driven,

  291. scared,

  292. we'll either be

  293. too timid

  294. or too brash,

  295. and the end result

  296. will be disunity

  297. and fracturing

  298. of the family.

  299. We will shut down

  300. anyone

  301. who attempts

  302. to interfere

  303. with my ministry.

  304. We will shut down

  305. anyone who tries

  306. to take a little bit

  307. away from me.

  308. Our character

  309. is of supreme

  310. importance.

  311. Scottish minister

  312. Robert Murray

  313. Mishane

  314. was a remarkably

  315. gifted man,

  316. remarkably gifted

  317. man,

  318. especially

  319. as a preacher

  320. of God's word.

  321. There's hardly

  322. anyone,

  323. apart from

  324. probably John Knox,

  325. who's had

  326. as much

  327. of an impact

  328. on the Church

  329. of Scotland

  330. historically

  331. than Robert

  332. Murray Mishane,

  333. and he was

  334. dead by the time

  335. he was 31.

  336. Remarkably gifted.

  337. He's quoted

  338. as saying,

  339. the greatest

  340. need of my

  341. people

  342. is my

  343. personal

  344. holiness.

  345. holiness.

  346. That is

  347. his character

  348. in Christ.

  349. Before

  350. his death

  351. in 1841,

  352. Mishane

  353. preached

  354. his last

  355. sermon

  356. on Isaiah

    Isaiah 60:1

  357. chapter 60

  358. verse 1.

  359. Arise,

  360. Shane,

  361. for thy

  362. light is

  363. come,

  364. and the

  365. glory of

  366. the Lord

  367. is risen

  368. upon thee.

  369. He preached

  370. the sermon,

  371. went home

  372. to bed

  373. with a

  374. fever,

  375. he was

  376. feeling

  377. unwell,

  378. and he

  379. died a

  380. week later.

  381. After

  382. his death,

  383. a letter

  384. was found

  385. in his

  386. bedroom

  387. beside his

  388. bed.

  389. Part of

  390. it,

  391. that letter

  392. which read

  393. this,

  394. I hope

  395. you will

  396. pardon a

  397. stranger

  398. for addressing

  399. to you in

  400. such few

  401. lines.

  402. I heard

  403. you preach

  404. last Sunday

  405. evening,

  406. and it

  407. pleased God

  408. to bless

  409. that sermon

  410. to my

  411. soul.

  412. It was

  413. not so

  414. much what

  415. you said

  416. as your

  417. manner of

  418. speaking that

  419. struck me.

  420. I saw

  421. in you a

  422. beauty of

  423. holiness

  424. that I

  425. never saw

  426. before.

  427. You also

  428. said something

  429. in your

  430. prayer that

  431. struck me

  432. very much.

  433. It was

  434. this.

  435. thou

  436. knowest

  437. that we

  438. love thee.

  439. Oh,

  440. sir,

  441. what would

  442. I give

  443. that I

  444. could say

  445. to my

  446. blessed

  447. saviour,

  448. thou

  449. knowest

  450. that I

  451. love thee.

  452. His

  453. character

  454. shone

  455. even more

  456. than his

  457. remarkable

  458. gifting.

  459. He

  460. unity.

  461. The unity

  462. which Paul

  463. urges upon

  464. us

  465. is

  466. maintained

  467. as we

  468. get

  469. reshaped

  470. into the

  471. character

  472. of the

  473. Lord

  474. Jesus

  475. Christ.

  476. Before he

  477. gets to

  478. any gifts,

  479. he says

  480. this in

  481. verse 2,

  482. be

  483. completely

  484. humble

  485. and gentle,

  486. being patient,

  487. bearing one

  488. other in

  489. love.

  490. The key

  491. here is

  492. humility.

  493. Humility

  494. will lead

  495. to gentleness

  496. and patience

  497. and forbearing

  498. with each

  499. other in

  500. love.

  501. In the

  502. ancient

  503. Greco-Roman

  504. world,

  505. when Paul

  506. first wrote

  507. this letter,

  508. humility

  509. was despised.

  510. It was

  511. what was

  512. regarded as

  513. a slave-like

  514. quality.

  515. What was

  516. admired

  517. was the

  518. mega-souled

  519. man or

  520. the great-souled

  521. man,

  522. the self-made

  523. man

  524. who was

  525. complete,

  526. self-sufficient.

  527. That's what

  528. was admired

  529. as much as

  530. power and

  531. influence is

  532. admired today.

  533. pride is

  534. the opposite

  535. of humility.

  536. Pride not

  537. only appears

  538. to be the

  539. earliest of

  540. sin, but

  541. it's also

  542. the core

  543. of all

  544. sin.

  545. Maybe

  546. that's why

  547. God hates

  548. the sin of

  549. pride so

  550. much.

  551. Proverbs

    Proverbs 8:13

  552. 8 verse

  553. 13 quotes

  554. God as

  555. saying,

  556. to fear

  557. the Lord

  558. is to

  559. hate evil.

  560. I hate

  561. pride and

  562. arrogance.

  563. Of course

  564. he hates

  565. all sin,

  566. but pride

  567. seems to

  568. be particularly

  569. offensive to

  570. him.

  571. Why does

  572. God hate

  573. pride so

  574. much?

  575. It's because

  576. pride is

  577. when sinful

  578. human beings

  579. aspire to

  580. the status

  581. and the

  582. position of

  583. God and

  584. refuse to

  585. acknowledge

  586. dependence upon

  587. God.

  588. Pride is the

  589. essence of

  590. sin, it's the

  591. foundation of

  592. it.

  593. Pride takes

  594. many forms

  595. but it all

  596. has it all

  597. directed towards

  598. one end.

  599. self

  600. glorification,

  601. the

  602. self

  603. made

  604. person.

  605. Pride is

  606. so dangerous

  607. for a

  608. church.

  609. Pride works

  610. to undermine

  611. the unity

  612. of a

  613. church.

  614. It elevates

  615. individual,

  616. it elevates

  617. groups,

  618. cultural

  619. groups above

  620. others.

  621. Pride brings

  622. down leaders.

  623. Spiritual

  624. pride sets

  625. us up against

  626. the world

  627. as well.

  628. and the

  629. truth which

  630. radiates from

  631. verse 2 is

  632. that Christian

  633. unity doesn't

  634. begin with

  635. external

  636. structures but

  637. it begins

  638. with attitudes

  639. of the heart.

  640. Humility and

  641. mildness and

  642. patience and

  643. loving tolerance

  644. of one another.

  645. power.

  646. And a

  647. character of

  648. humility means

  649. that we will

  650. hold any

  651. gifting that

  652. we have

  653. received as

  654. simply that.

  655. It's a

  656. gift.

  657. It's a

  658. gift.

  659. Any ability

  660. that we have,

  661. any talent that

  662. we have,

  663. anything that

  664. we have,

  665. any name that

  666. we have for

  667. ourselves,

  668. it is a

  669. gift.

  670. gift.

  671. They are

  672. gifts from

  673. God for

  674. his glory and

  675. for the good

  676. of others.

  677. Our gifting

  678. will not be

  679. about serving

  680. our ego,

  681. our need for

  682. approval,

  683. or the

  684. building up

  685. of positions

  686. of power and

  687. influence.

  688. Pride and

  689. self-promoting

  690. arrogance

  691. sow seeds

  692. of disunity

  693. but a

  694. humble,

  695. gentle person

  696. is like a

  697. cool breeze

  698. on a hot

  699. day.

  700. They're a

  701. delight.

  702. Charles Simeon,

  703. the great

  704. preacher of

  705. King's College

  706. and Holy

  707. Trinity

  708. Cambridge,

  709. was one

  710. humble man

  711. who over

  712. a long

  713. course of

  714. time,

  715. God

  716. beat him

  717. into

  718. humility.

  719. He was

  720. highly

  721. influential

  722. very

  723. successful

  724. in

  725. ministry.

  726. However,

  727. in

  728. 1801,

  729. Simeon's

  730. health

  731. broke

  732. down.

  733. Sorry,

  734. 1808,

  735. his health

  736. broke

  737. down and

  738. he had to

  739. spend about

  740. eight months

  741. recuperating on

  742. the Isle of

  743. White.

  744. His assistant

  745. stepped into

  746. the gap to

  747. preach as

  748. many as

  749. five times on

  750. a Sunday in

  751. Holy Trinity

  752. and another

  753. church in

  754. stable foot.

  755. The assistant

  756. surprised

  757. himself and

  758. as it

  759. turns out,

  760. the

  761. congregations

  762. as well,

  763. by developing

  764. a preaching

  765. ability almost

  766. equal and

  767. some would

  768. say better

  769. than Simeon's.

  770. someone reported

  771. to Simeon

  772. while he's

  773. on the

  774. Isle of

  775. White,

  776. recuperating

  777. from,

  778. oh,

  779. by the

  780. way,

  781. no need

  782. to rush

  783. back,

  784. your assistant's

  785. doing a

  786. fantastic

  787. job.

  788. Totally

  789. free from

  790. any suggestion

  791. of pride or

  792. professional

  793. jealousy,

  794. Simeon

  795. greatly

  796. rejoiced.

  797. He quoted

  798. this scripture,

  799. Peter,

  800. he must

  801. increase,

  802. but I

  803. must

  804. decrease.

  805. And he

  806. told a

  807. friend,

  808. ah,

  809. now I

  810. see why

  811. I have

  812. been laid

  813. aside with

  814. this illness

  815. for this

  816. time and

  817. I bless

  818. God for

  819. it.

  820. Some of

  821. you may

  822. still be

  823. seething,

  824. still holding

  825. on to

  826. issues

  827. because

  828. you've

  829. been laid

  830. aside by

  831. somebody.

  832. So how

  833. did Simeon

  834. get to the

  835. position where

  836. he had

  837. grown in

  838. humility to

  839. the point

  840. where he

  841. was rejoicing

  842. in the

  843. gifting of

  844. others in

  845. such a way

  846. that even

  847. that gifting

  848. was surpassing

  849. his own?

  850. After Simeon

  851. had been a

  852. Christian for

  853. 40 years,

  854. he wrote

  855. this.

  856. Simeon

  857. spent 40

  858. years of

  859. applying the

  860. good news

  861. of the

  862. gospel to

  863. his life

  864. in such

  865. a way

  866. that it

  867. humbled

  868. him.

  869. He never

  870. let go of

  871. the fact

  872. that everything

  873. was a gift.

  874. Never let

  875. go of the

  876. fact that he

  877. was sinful.

  878. He's quoted

  879. as saying,

  880. I spend

  881. my days

  882. mining,

  883. mining the

  884. depths of

  885. my sinfulness

  886. and at the

  887. same time

  888. clutching to

  889. the grace of

  890. God in

  891. Jesus Christ.

  892. The deeper

  893. I go in

  894. understanding

  895. my sin,

  896. the greater

  897. I see his

  898. glory and

  899. grace to

  900. me.

  901. He labored,

  902. labored to

  903. know the

  904. God in

  905. the Bible

  906. and also

  907. to know

  908. his true

  909. vileness

  910. at the

  911. same time.

  912. And this

  913. clicked him

  914. close to

  915. God through

  916. the many,

  917. many difficult

  918. seasons of

  919. life and

  920. ministry that

  921. he faced.

  922. But that's

  923. not all.

  924. He didn't

  925. labor by

  926. himself.

  927. As I said

  928. last week,

  929. we cannot

  930. know an

  931. individual by

  932. ourselves.

  933. We cannot

  934. even know

  935. ourselves by

  936. ourselves.

  937. One of the

  938. remarkable things

  939. about Simeon

  940. was that he

  941. could take a

  942. rebuke and

  943. he grew from

  944. it.

  945. I could go

  946. on and on

  947. and on

  948. about it.

  949. But back

  950. in 2009,

  951. I wrote a

  952. core value

  953. for us to

  954. address this

  955. issue.

  956. If there is

  957. one thing

  958. that I'd

  959. love us

  960. at St.

  961. Paul's to

  962. be known

  963. for, it

  964. would be

  965. this,

  966. humble

  967. authenticity.

  968. I'll read

  969. it to you.

  970. We seek

  971. our words

  972. and actions

  973. to be what

  974. we believe

  975. and teach

  976. from God's

  977. word.

  978. We desire

  979. for our

  980. lives,

  981. ministries,

  982. and church

  983. policies to

  984. give explicit

  985. evidence that

  986. we treasure

  987. Jesus Christ

  988. above everything

  989. else.

  990. We will

  991. pursue loving

  992. honesty in

  993. all our

  994. communication.

  995. We will

  996. seek to

  997. serve others

  998. and consider

  999. them more

  1000. important than

  1001. ourselves.

  1002. In

  1003. disagreements,

  1004. we'll assume

  1005. the best of

  1006. others and

  1007. ask clarifying

  1008. questions before

  1009. making judgments.

  1010. When we have

  1011. offended another,

  1012. we will be

  1013. quick to confess

  1014. error and

  1015. sin.

  1016. We will

  1017. pursue

  1018. reconciliation

  1019. and we

  1020. will work

  1021. towards

  1022. change.

  1023. We will

  1024. not tolerate

  1025. contention.

  1026. We value

  1027. unity in

  1028. Christ and

  1029. so we

  1030. work together

  1031. as one

  1032. team to

  1033. fulfill our

  1034. mission.

  1035. We are

  1036. committed to

  1037. being rigorously

  1038. honest,

  1039. financially

  1040. accountable,

  1041. and above

  1042. approach in

  1043. all of our

  1044. dealings.

  1045. I could go

  1046. on and

  1047. on and

  1048. unpack that

  1049. for you,

  1050. but I've

  1051. got a gift

  1052. instead.

  1053. I wrote

  1054. this in

  1055. 2010,

  1056. humble

  1057. authenticity,

  1058. over a

  1059. series of

  1060. posts for

  1061. a church

  1062. bulletin that

  1063. we had at

  1064. the time.

  1065. I wanted

  1066. to unpack

  1067. what it

  1068. might look

  1069. for us to

  1070. shape our

  1071. corporate life

  1072. together.

  1073. It's not the

  1074. final word on

  1075. humility.

  1076. What is the

  1077. final word on

  1078. humility?

  1079. And it would

  1080. be somewhat

  1081. ironic if I

  1082. actually wrote

  1083. the final word

  1084. on humility.

  1085. But I gave

  1086. a go at it

  1087. anyway.

  1088. I was

  1089. thoroughly

  1090. convinced then,

  1091. I am even

  1092. more thoroughly

  1093. convinced now,

  1094. if it's

  1095. possibly more

  1096. thoroughly

  1097. convinced,

  1098. that there is

  1099. no effective

  1100. service,

  1101. there is no

  1102. effective mission

  1103. without the

  1104. cultivation of

  1105. humility in

  1106. the heart and

  1107. the weakening

  1108. of pride in

  1109. our life.

  1110. It is the

  1111. very foundation

  1112. before we move

  1113. on to any

  1114. talk about

  1115. giftings.

  1116. character

  1117. comes

  1118. first.

  1119. May we

  1120. all,

  1121. like the

  1122. Lord Jesus,

  1123. descend into

  1124. greatness,

  1125. laid aside,

  1126. his glory

  1127. became one

  1128. of us,

  1129. and now

  1130. been ascended

  1131. to the

  1132. highest heights

  1133. that every

  1134. name will

  1135. bow to

  1136. him and

  1137. confess him.

  1138. The last

  1139. word on

  1140. this goes

  1141. to God

  1142. himself.

  1143. This is

  1144. for all

  1145. of us

  1146. who think

  1147. that through

  1148. our good

  1149. works we

  1150. can earn

  1151. God's

  1152. attention,

  1153. his gaze.

  1154. The last

  1155. word goes

  1156. to God

  1157. himself,

  1158. Isaiah 66

    Isaiah 66:2

  1159. verse 2.

  1160. This is the

  1161. one I

  1162. esteem.

  1163. This is

  1164. what draws

  1165. my attention.

  1166. This is

  1167. the one I

  1168. notice.

  1169. He who is

  1170. humble and

  1171. contrite in

  1172. spirit and

  1173. trembles at

  1174. my word.
