  1. Well, good morning. Keep your Bibles open there at Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  2. And I've got a sermon outline as well, which you can get on the St. Paul's app,

  3. or if you want one in your hand, there's one there.

  4. And I'm probably following something along that, but who knows, after 17 hours on a flight, we'll see how we go.

  5. Our world has changed quite a lot in the past 75 to 80 years.

  6. For instance, our consumer mentality since the end of World War II has had a positive impact

  7. in that it's helped us kick industry along really well in such a way that the standard of living has risen not just in the West,

  8. but in fact in the world generally.

  9. But the same mentality has also had quite a detrimental impact on society.

  10. Classic example of this is the shift that's happened in advertising and in, for instance,

  11. as one example, military recruitment advertising since World War II today.

  12. And it gives you a picture of the way society has moved.

  13. During World War II, you may have been familiar with this if you were there, which you probably weren't.

  14. But during World War II, there was advertising like,

  15. Uncle Sam wants you in the US.

  16. You've got this sort of stuff.

  17. I want you.

  18. Another one was the call to duty,

  19. to join the army for home and country.

  20. It's my duty.

  21. I'm doing it.

  22. Are you doing it?

  23. So it's a guilt people into fulfillment of a duty.

  24. So you sign up and you fulfill your duty to country, to the nation for the good of humanity,

  25. unless, of course, you are a woman.

  26. And then in that case, the advertising was,

  27. I wish I was a man so that I could fulfill my duty.

  28. I'm making no comment on that whatsoever.

  29. Similar advertising operated throughout the United States,

  30. like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, other places like that.

  31. Now, military advertising is this.

  32. Be number one.

  33. It's about you.

  34. It's focused on you.

  35. Or you be all you can be and come and join the armed forces.

  36. We need you.

  37. And in its worst case, there's this running in the United Kingdom at the moment.

  38. You, me, me, me, millennials out there,

  39. the military needs you for your self-belief.

  40. We're desperate for you, you-centered people to come and be part of us.

  41. We are lost without you.

  42. Be all you can be.

  43. And it's no longer about duty.

  44. It's no longer about anyone else.

  45. It's no longer about society, about your country.

  46. It's about you.

  47. Advertisement is you focus.

  48. It's a massive shift.

  49. I suppose it should not come as a surprise,

  50. since it's a direct result of the expressive individualism of modern Western culture,

  51. which has replaced the community-first loyalties of previous generations,

  52. former generations.

  53. Individuals have been taught to be consumers,

  54. not only of retailers and merchants,

  55. but also of institutions and organizations.

  56. Individuals have been shaped by the culture to think of their own happiness and prosperity first,

  57. and to avoid letting commitments to any group or institution become a barrier to finding personal fulfillment.

  58. The concept of service and sacrifice are viewed as psychologically unhealthy in the West.

  59. One of the things that church planters did,

  60. this is back in the 1990s, around the 2000s,

  61. when the church growth movement was on its peak.

  62. One of the things they did as a result of the church growth movement

  63. was conduct neighborhood surveys in advance of going in and planting a church into a neighborhood

  64. to see what the values of that neighborhood were

  65. and how the new church could come in and connect with those values.

  66. They would start, get out there, meet the neighborhood,

  67. and the assumption was that if we could start a church to meet the values of our neighborhood,

  68. then people would just flock into that.

  69. One neighborhood, having done one of these surveys,

  70. one pastor went and did these surveys,

  71. and one neighborhood said that the church that they were looking for,

  72. bottom line, would never ask them to do anything.

  73. That's the church they're looking for.

  74. Never make demands on me.

  75. Never call me to a commitment.

  76. We don't want to minister to anyone we expect to be ministered to.

  77. Well, there's a great foundation to start a church.

  78. Our modern society, as well as many, I think some churches,

  79. potentially many churches, many members of churches,

  80. are on a collision course with the one who redefined greatness for us.

  81. I come not to be served, but to serve and give my life as a ransom for many.

  82. That's the foundation of our existence.

  83. Now, if you've just joined us, we're in our annual vision series.

  84. We are in Ephesians because this letter is about the church,

  85. it's about who we are as a people.

  86. We are God's new society.

  87. We are God's family, a new creation, a new humanity,

  88. characterized not by walls of hostility and division,

  89. but by unity and peace.

  90. And we saw in the first couple of chapters of Ephesians

  91. that we have, as a new humanity,

  92. these wonderful blessings in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  93. It's because of the good news of what Jesus has achieved for us.

  94. It's the gospel.

  95. It's on the back of your service sheet.

  96. And the gospel, this good news,

  97. is the foundation of what we believe at St. Paul's,

  98. and it is life-changing.

  99. Let me just put it to you in case you haven't got time to read it.

  100. The gospel is the good news that God sent his son,

  101. the Lord Jesus Christ, in the world to live a perfect life,

  102. to die as a substitute for sinners,

  103. to absorb the anger of God,

  104. to take away our guilt and our shame,

  105. provide the gift of right standing before God,

  106. and to give eternal life and joy

  107. through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone,

  108. apart from any works of obedience on our behalf.

  109. And that statement,

  110. from that statement,

  111. from the grasping of that gospel,

  112. multitudes of blessings flow to those who embraced it in Jesus.

  113. As we saw last week,

  114. one of those is,

  115. God transforms our character in such a way

  116. that he becomes our new identity

  117. and he fills us up from the inside

  118. and grows us in humility at the very least.

  119. So we're back in Ephesians 4 today.

  120. We're going to spend three weeks here.

  121. And to see that the gospel,

  122. through the gospel,

  123. because of the gospel,

  124. God also doesn't just fill us up

  125. and give us a new identity and a character,

  126. but also gives us gifts,

  127. his gifts,

  128. to serve.

  129. We saw it in chapter 2, verse 10.

  130. As a consequence of God's work of salvation,

  131. it says,

  132. we are God's handiwork,

  133. created in Christ Jesus,

  134. to do good works,

  135. which God prepared in advance for us to do.

  136. Now, I've been emphasizing our unity in Jesus

  137. over the past couple of weeks.

  138. Now, let's have a look at our diversity.

  139. We are not clones.

  140. Yes, there is one faith, one baptism,

  141. but our unity does not mean uniformity.

  142. In verse 7, Paul writes,

  143. to each of us,

  144. grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

  145. And grace here means the ability to perform

  146. the task that God has given us to do.

  147. In chapter 3, verses 7 and 8,

  148. Paul says that his apostleship

  149. came with the gift of God's grace.

  150. The point for us is this.

  151. Each of us who are in Jesus

  152. has received this enabling grace

  153. in the exact proportion that Christ gave it.

  154. And the message of this verse

  155. is that that's all of us who are in Jesus.

  156. No exceptions at all.

  157. All of us have a serving grace

  158. which has been given to us

  159. by Christ in perfect measure.

  160. That is, we all have a special part to perform.

  161. Some have put the diversity of gifts

  162. that have been given

  163. to God's people from Jesus

  164. into three broad categories.

  165. Prophetic gifts,

  166. priestly gifts,

  167. and kingly gifts.

  168. Prophetic gifts are abilities

  169. based on understanding

  170. and articulating biblical truth.

  171. They are the gifts

  172. that represent God to others.

  173. The gifts that represent God to others.

  174. And are marked by boldness and clarity.

  175. Things like evangelism,

  176. teaching, speaking, discernment, prophecy.

  177. Priestly gifts

  178. are abilities based on understanding

  179. a supply

  180. and to supply basic needs.

  181. To understand and supply basic needs.

  182. They represent God to the world.

  183. And are marked by things like

  184. sympathy and sacrifice and care,

  185. encouragement,

  186. helping, pastoring, mercy,

  187. those kinds of things.

  188. Kingly gifts

  189. are abilities based on

  190. understanding direction

  191. and whole group needs.

  192. They represent Christ's vision,

  193. his vision,

  194. to others.

  195. And are marked by wisdom,

  196. practicality,

  197. leadership,

  198. things like apostles,

  199. founders of ministries,

  200. leadership,

  201. administration,

  202. wisdom,

  203. faith,

  204. courage.

  205. when you put it all together,

  206. and I think one of the

  207. clues here

  208. is that it is

  209. very rare,

  210. extremely rare

  211. for anyone

  212. to have all three

  213. of those categories

  214. in equal measure.

  215. Extremely rare.

  216. when you put it all together,

  217. each person's

  218. person's gifting

  219. is as unique

  220. as a thumbprint.

  221. The implication

  222. is that there is a ministry

  223. that only you

  224. can do.

  225. Spiritual gifts

  226. fit you

  227. for the mission

  228. in life

  229. that God

  230. has given you.

  231. Paul goes on

  232. to say

  233. in verses

  234. 8 and 10

  235. that not only

  236. do we have

  237. a special grace,

  238. but our

  239. individual graces

  240. have

  241. a spectacular

  242. origin.

  243. Have a look at it.

  244. Verse 8.

  245. This is why it says

  246. when he ascended

  247. on high,

  248. he led captives

  249. in his train

  250. and gave gifts

  251. to men.

  252. What does

  253. he ascended

  254. mean?

  255. Except that

  256. he also

  257. descended

  258. to the lower

  259. earthly regions.

  260. He who

  261. descended

  262. is the very one

  263. who ascended

  264. higher than

  265. all the heavens

  266. in order to

  267. fill the whole

  268. universe.

  269. Now what Paul

  270. is doing there,

  271. he's borrowing

  272. a line

  273. from

  274. Psalm

    Psalms 68:18

  275. 68

  276. verse 18.

  277. In Psalm

    Psalms 68:16

  278. 68

  279. verses 16

  280. 17

  281. just before

  282. it,

  283. God

  284. sets

  285. his

  286. sight

  287. on

  288. Mount

  289. Zion

  290. and moves

  291. as it says

  292. there

  293. with tens

  294. of thousands

  295. and thousands

  296. of thousands

  297. of chariots

  298. up the slopes

  299. of Jerusalem

  300. in victory

  301. leading

  302. captives

  303. in his train

  304. and receiving

  305. gifts

  306. from

  307. humanity.

  308. So Paul

  309. takes that

  310. image

  311. and

  312. he shifts

  313. it.

  314. He changes

  315. it from

  316. the conquering

  317. king to

  318. Jerusalem

  319. receiving

  320. gifts from

  321. humanity

  322. for being

  323. the conquering

  324. king

  325. to now

  326. the conquering

  327. king

  328. throwing out,

  329. casting out

  330. gifts to

  331. humanity.

  332. The triumphant

  333. Christ

  334. gave

  335. gifts

  336. to people.

  337. He's simply

  338. borrowing the

  339. image of

  340. Psalm 68

  341. and applying it

  342. to Christ

  343. coming into

  344. this world

  345. and his

  346. return to

  347. heaven.

  348. The fact

  349. that he

  350. ascended

  351. is another

  352. way of

  353. indicating

  354. the humiliation,

  355. his humility

  356. of coming

  357. into

  358. this world.

  359. His

  360. descent

  361. to earth

  362. meant that

  363. he set

  364. aside

  365. the

  366. independent

  367. exercises

  368. or the

  369. independent

  370. exercise

  371. of his

  372. eternal

  373. divine

  374. attributes.

  375. Submitting

  376. the exercise

  377. of those

  378. attributes

  379. to the

  380. father's

  381. will.

  382. he went

  383. down

  384. and down

  385. and down

  386. in humility

  387. and became

  388. man.

  389. And he

  390. went further

  391. down still

  392. to death

  393. on a cross.

  394. This is

  395. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  396. chapter 2.

  397. Death

  398. on the cross

  399. and actually

  400. becoming sin

  401. for us.

  402. But then

  403. he burst

  404. up in

  405. exultation

  406. so that now

  407. he fills

  408. the whole

  409. universe

  410. as the

  411. conquering

  412. king

  413. and joyously

  414. lavishes

  415. gifts upon

  416. his children.

  417. And what

  418. are the

  419. gifts

  420. he gives

  421. his

  422. children?

  423. His

  424. gifts

  425. as

  426. prophet,

  427. priest

  428. and king.

  429. He gives

  430. abundant

  431. gifts

  432. to his

  433. church

  434. and gives

  435. his people

  436. power to

  437. fulfill

  438. their

  439. gifts.

  440. The gifts

  441. and enabling

  442. grace which

  443. we have

  444. have been

  445. given to

  446. us by the

  447. conquering king

  448. as he has

  449. apportioned

  450. them.

  451. They come

  452. from the

  453. conquering king.

  454. There's no

  455. room for

  456. rivalry and

  457. jealousy here.

  458. they are

  459. given with

  460. great

  461. expectation on

  462. his part

  463. for he

  464. expects us

  465. to use

  466. those gifts

  467. to bring

  468. power and

  469. victory in

  470. the church.

  471. He expects

  472. those gifts

  473. to be used

  474. to advance

  475. his work

  476. in the

  477. world.

  478. Not your

  479. glory.

  480. gifts he

  481. gives us

  482. are his

  483. gifting to

  484. complete his

  485. mission.

  486. We carry

  487. on his

  488. work.

  489. At the

  490. beginning of

  491. the book

  492. of Acts,

  493. it says

  494. there,

  495. Luke says

  496. about his

  497. gospel,

  498. we've heard

  499. already about

  500. all that

  501. Jesus began

  502. to do

  503. and teach.

  504. And now

  505. in the

  506. book of

  507. Acts,

  508. his mission

  509. continues on

  510. as he

  511. continues to

  512. do and

  513. teach through

  514. his disciples

  515. in the

  516. world.

  517. The use

  518. of the

  519. gifts of

  520. grace that

  521. God has

  522. apportioned

  523. to us

  524. is also,

  525. according to

  526. Ephesians 4,

  527. how we make

  528. every effort

  529. to maintain

  530. the unity

  531. that we have

  532. in Jesus.

  533. So,

  534. first of

  535. all,

  536. character,

  537. growing

  538. downward as

  539. Jesus did

  540. in humility,

  541. bearing with

  542. one another

  543. in love,

  544. and also

  545. the exercising

  546. of gifts

  547. to one

  548. another.

  549. The bottom

  550. line here is

  551. that every

  552. Christian is

  553. in ministry

  554. through the

  555. church.

  556. No one,

  557. no one,

  558. did you hear

  559. it?

  560. Let me just

  561. say,

  562. how was it?

  563. Not a

  564. single soul

  565. who is

  566. in Christ

  567. is merely

  568. a consumer

  569. of services.

  570. Everyone

  571. is also

  572. a distributor

  573. of services.

  574. Although we

  575. are different

  576. in the

  577. ministry,

  578. we do.

  579. Ephesians 4,

    Ephesians 4:11

  580. verses 11 and

  581. 12 gives us

  582. a glimpse

  583. into the

  584. relationship.

  585. It's just a

  586. brief glimpse.

  587. There's other

  588. bits of the

  589. New Testament

  590. unpacked this,

  591. but a brief

  592. glimpse,

  593. relationship

  594. between church

  595. leaders and

  596. church members,

  597. between those

  598. who are in

  599. vocational

  600. ministry and

  601. those who

  602. are as

  603. members of

  604. the church.

  605. Verse 11

  606. reads,

  607. Christ himself

  608. gave the

  609. apostles,

  610. the prophets,

  611. the evangelists,

  612. the pastors,

  613. and the

  614. teachers.

  615. So why

  616. did Christ

  617. give these

  618. to the

  619. church?

  620. Verse 12,

  621. to equip

  622. his people

  623. for works

  624. of service.

  625. The word

  626. service there

  627. is interchangeable

  628. with the

  629. word ministry.

  630. What's the

  631. end goal

  632. of God

  633. giving church

  634. leaders to

  635. equip his

  636. people for

  637. the ministry?

  638. Verse 12

  639. again.

  640. Keep reading.

  641. So that the

  642. body of

  643. Christ

  644. may be

  645. built.

  646. Christ

  647. gives the

  648. leaders to

  649. equip the

  650. members for

  651. the works

  652. of ministry

  653. in such a

  654. way that the

  655. whole body

  656. of Christ

  657. gets built.

  658. We all

  659. have a

  660. ministry.

  661. Leaders

  662. have primarily

  663. an equipping

  664. ministry and

  665. members have

  666. primarily a

  667. doing ministry

  668. but we all

  669. are called to

  670. minister together

  671. as Christ

  672. has apportioned

  673. it to build

  674. his church.

  675. So we

  676. should not

  677. think of

  678. the local

  679. church as

  680. being the

  681. manly

  682. ferry.

  683. On the

  684. ferry you

  685. get on the

  686. ferry and

  687. you have a

  688. few staff who

  689. get you from

  690. point A to

  691. point B or

  692. it's like the

  693. airplane that a

  694. few of us just

  695. flew back on

  696. yesterday.

  697. The vast

  698. majority of

  699. people sitting

  700. on that

  701. airplane are

  702. passengers.

  703. We're getting

  704. fed and

  705. watered and

  706. everything else

  707. and there's a

  708. few people up

  709. the front doing

  710. the driving of

  711. the thing,

  712. flying of it,

  713. whatever you want

  714. to call it,

  715. and a few other

  716. people helping

  717. out, get on,

  718. people serving

  719. snacks and

  720. cleaning stuff

  721. up.

  722. But the vast

  723. majority are

  724. consumers of

  725. services.

  726. Everyone else is

  727. sitting there

  728. passively in the

  729. seats, awaiting

  730. to arrive the

  731. destination and

  732. taking some

  733. photos along the

  734. way.

  735. The local

  736. church is

  737. much more

  738. like a

  739. sailing boat

  740. in the

  741. Sydney to

  742. Hobart yacht

  743. race.

  744. Everyone on

  745. board has a

  746. crucial role

  747. to play and

  748. frankly there are

  749. no passengers

  750. on those

  751. yachts heading

  752. to Hobart once

  753. a year.

  754. No passengers

  755. catching a lift

  756. to Hobart to

  757. visit some

  758. family.

  759. You're a dead

  760. weight is what

  761. you are.

  762. The captain's

  763. job on that

  764. is to set

  765. the course,

  766. to direct the

  767. crew, to do

  768. their part and

  769. to work together

  770. to reach a

  771. goal.

  772. All of God's

  773. people are

  774. called to be a

  775. corporate

  776. priesthood,

  777. either an

  778. equipping ministry

  779. or a doing

  780. ministry.

  781. Throughout

  782. history the

  783. church has been

  784. built on a

  785. foundation of

  786. diversity.

  787. It was

  788. interesting to

  789. hear one

  790. person at

  791. the conference

  792. say their

  793. biggest loss

  794. in their

  795. church,

  796. the biggest

  797. loss in their

  798. church when

  799. they moved from

  800. being a

  801. monocultural

  802. church to a

  803. multi-ethnic

  804. church,

  805. they said was

  806. from the

  807. majority culture

  808. that had been

  809. used to being

  810. served and a

  811. multi-ethnic

  812. church now meant

  813. we needed to

  814. serve one

  815. another.

  816. And so they

  817. just upped and

  818. moved to a

  819. church where

  820. they would get

  821. the services

  822. they heard,

  823. the music they

  824. wanted, the

  825. liturgy they

  826. wanted.

  827. They just upped

  828. and moved.

  829. The foundation

  830. for them was

  831. I am here to

  832. be served.

  833. God works

  834. with diversity

  835. and quite

  836. ironically he

  837. uses that to

  838. build our

  839. unity.

  840. Did you notice

  841. that in verse

  842. 12?

  843. So that the

  844. body of Christ

  845. may be built

  846. up until we

  847. all reach

  848. unity in the

  849. faith and in

  850. the knowledge of

  851. the Son of God

  852. and become

  853. mature.

  854. It's a

  855. beautiful image.

  856. The image I

  857. have here is

  858. of an

  859. orchestra.

  860. Now I'm

  861. fairly clueless

  862. when it comes

  863. to music.

  864. I don't

  865. have a lot

  866. of skill

  867. set in that

  868. regard.

  869. The first

  870. time I went

  871. to watch an

  872. orchestra was

  873. at the Sydney

  874. Opera House

  875. and I did it

  876. to impress Nat.

  877. That's the

  878. reason I was

  879. there.

  880. In fact I

  881. might have

  882. even bought

  883. the tickets

  884. in order to

  885. be even more

  886. impressive.

  887. If I went to

  888. watch an

  889. orchestra nowadays

  890. it would be to

  891. impress Nat.

  892. I do remember

  893. sitting in my

  894. seat at the

  895. Sydney Opera

  896. House and

  897. watching them

  898. tune and warm

  899. up before the

  900. whole thing got

  901. going.

  902. It was like

  903. all this

  904. racket of

  905. noise that was

  906. going on.

  907. It did not

  908. sound right at

  909. all.

  910. Then the

  911. conductor

  912. walked on

  913. and started.

  914. Wow.

  915. It was

  916. music.

  917. All their

  918. little different

  919. bits coming

  920. together.

  921. All the

  922. diversity of

  923. instruments coming

  924. together and

  925. it was

  926. fantastic.

  927. And I

  928. enjoyed it.

  929. God's design

  930. for us is to

  931. be different.

  932. But when we

  933. get put

  934. together we

  935. come up with

  936. a harmony

  937. that is

  938. absolutely

  939. impossible

  940. when we're

  941. all the

  942. same.

  943. That's the

  944. genius of

  945. God.

  946. It's because

  947. we are so

  948. different that

  949. we need

  950. each other.

  951. That means

  952. we are all

  953. involved in

  954. the ministry

  955. to prepare

  956. God's people

  957. for works

  958. of service.

  959. When you

  960. use your

  961. gifts that

  962. God has

  963. given you to

  964. strengthen me

  965. instead of

  966. gratifying

  967. yourself and

  968. when I use

  969. my God

  970. given gifts

  971. to strengthen

  972. you instead

  973. of gratifying

  974. myself,

  975. then our

  976. diversity will

  977. build us

  978. up into a

  979. beautiful harmony

  980. in truth and

  981. love rather

  982. than fragmenting

  983. us.

  984. Serving is

  985. putting the

  986. needs of

  987. others ahead

  988. of our own

  989. or putting

  990. the needs of

  991. the community

  992. ahead of our

  993. individual needs.

  994. things.

  995. And this

  996. day of

  997. age of

  998. consumerism,

  999. what Jesus

  1000. is saying

  1001. here, what

  1002. Paul is

  1003. saying here

  1004. is like a

  1005. fist in

  1006. the face.

  1007. This is so

  1008. countercultural

  1009. what we're

  1010. seeking to do

  1011. here.

  1012. Totally

  1013. countercultural.

  1014. Why would

  1015. you do

  1016. this?

  1017. Well, there

  1018. are a few

  1019. personal benefits.

  1020. benefits.

  1021. The first

  1022. benefit is

  1023. self-knowledge.

  1024. Don't think

  1025. you know your

  1026. real gifts and

  1027. capacities until

  1028. you do a

  1029. whole lot of

  1030. humble serving

  1031. in many

  1032. different capacities

  1033. across generations

  1034. and across

  1035. cultures.

  1036. Don't think you

  1037. know your true

  1038. self until that

  1039. happens.

  1040. We've already

  1041. seen this in

  1042. this series

  1043. already.

  1044. only as you

  1045. do that

  1046. with others

  1047. you'll come to

  1048. understand your

  1049. own self more.

  1050. The second

  1051. benefit is

  1052. community.

  1053. When you

  1054. approach the

  1055. church as a

  1056. consumer, that

  1057. is only to

  1058. get your

  1059. needs met,

  1060. only to get

  1061. your needs

  1062. met, you

  1063. are in

  1064. solitary mode

  1065. of being.

  1066. Solitary mode

  1067. of being.

  1068. And you know

  1069. what happens?

  1070. You sit on

  1071. the sideline

  1072. complaining that

  1073. your needs are

  1074. never getting

  1075. met.

  1076. You come

  1077. with a

  1078. consumer mindset

  1079. and you'll be

  1080. critical of the

  1081. church because

  1082. they're never

  1083. meeting your

  1084. needs.

  1085. They're never

  1086. coming up to

  1087. standard.

  1088. It's a

  1089. consistent thing.

  1090. And then you

  1091. walk out the

  1092. door and go,

  1093. I'm on the

  1094. conveyor belt to

  1095. leave because I'm

  1096. not here to serve,

  1097. not here to connect,

  1098. not here to build

  1099. anyone.

  1100. I'm on the

  1101. conveyor belt to

  1102. leave to the

  1103. next church.

  1104. Throwing grenades

  1105. at the

  1106. previous one

  1107. until you

  1108. discover that

  1109. the next church

  1110. you go to has

  1111. got exactly the

  1112. same problems.

  1113. And the

  1114. problem is

  1115. you.

  1116. You're a

  1117. consumer.

  1118. When you

  1119. reject the

  1120. consumer mindset,

  1121. serving will

  1122. draw you out of

  1123. yourself and

  1124. into relationships.

  1125. relationships.

  1126. The third

  1127. benefit is the

  1128. fulfillment and

  1129. joy of those

  1130. relationships and

  1131. especially seeing

  1132. others touched

  1133. through you.

  1134. Deb highlighted

  1135. this last week.

  1136. Or seeing

  1137. something great

  1138. happening through

  1139. the part that

  1140. you play in

  1141. the body of

  1142. Christ.

  1143. Paradoxically,

  1144. if you serve

  1145. primarily for the

  1146. benefits to

  1147. yourself, then

  1148. it actually isn't

  1149. serving and you

  1150. don't get the

  1151. benefits.

  1152. The only

  1153. workable dynamic

  1154. for every member

  1155. ministry is

  1156. Mark 10, 45

  1157. and the

  1158. standard that

  1159. Jesus set.

  1160. Because Jesus

  1161. served you in

  1162. such a radical

  1163. way, you have a

  1164. joyful need to

  1165. serve.

  1166. It's a form of

  1167. praise that

  1168. doesn't fully

  1169. enjoy what

  1170. admires until

  1171. it expresses

  1172. itself in

  1173. service.

  1174. service.

  1175. So, finally,

  1176. this is all

  1177. going to

  1178. encourage you to

  1179. sign up to

  1180. serve.

  1181. I want to

  1182. suggest three

  1183. broad ways

  1184. that, ways to

  1185. serve God at

  1186. this church, which

  1187. would be the

  1188. same as any

  1189. church, but let

  1190. me make it

  1191. specific about

  1192. this church.

  1193. James has

  1194. already mentioned

  1195. them, time,

  1196. talents and

  1197. treasures.

  1198. Firstly, time.

  1199. Easiest way to

  1200. serve God with

  1201. your time is

  1202. frankly to turn

  1203. up and engage

  1204. with another

  1205. individual who's

  1206. different from

  1207. you.

  1208. That's the

  1209. easiest way.

  1210. Don't

  1211. underestimate the

  1212. role you play

  1213. by turning up

  1214. and going across

  1215. barriers to

  1216. engage with

  1217. another individual.

  1218. Take the time to

  1219. talk, to

  1220. encourage, to

  1221. listen, to

  1222. pray.

  1223. As you speak the

  1224. truth in love to

  1225. them, you are

  1226. ministering to

  1227. them.

  1228. When you think of

  1229. ministry at a

  1230. church, we

  1231. normally think of

  1232. formal ministry

  1233. sense, a

  1234. position on a

  1235. team or a

  1236. specific role on

  1237. a roster or

  1238. something like

  1239. that.

  1240. That's a very

  1241. small portion of

  1242. the ministry that

  1243. happens at St.

  1244. Paul's.

  1245. A small portion.

  1246. And it's not the

  1247. starting point for

  1248. ministry, nor the

  1249. end point of

  1250. ministry.

  1251. The informal

  1252. ministry is what

  1253. happens outside of

  1254. the formal

  1255. structures and

  1256. gatherings of

  1257. St.

  1258. Paul's.

  1259. And it is

  1260. absolutely crucial

  1261. for building each

  1262. other up.

  1263. It takes time, it

  1264. takes effort.

  1265. But ministry

  1266. doesn't stop there

  1267. though.

1268. And I do want to

  1269. encourage you to

  1270. join a ministry

  1271. team.

  1272. And it's already

  1273. been pointed out

  1274. there on the

  1275. wall.

  1276. You can grab

  1277. some information.

  1278. There's a table

  1279. out in the middle

  1280. of the atrium to

  1281. sign up and get

  1282. involved.

  1283. involved.

  1284. I would say do

  1285. it today.

  1286. We're going to

  1287. keep hitting you

  1288. with it the next

1289. time it is, but do

  1290. it today.

  1291. Get involved.

  1292. Say no to my

  1293. selfishness.

  1294. Say no to my

  1295. individuality and get

  1296. involved in others.

  1297. You're also

  1298. accountable for your

  1299. time to others.

  1300. service.

  1301. When you're part of

  1302. a ministry team,

  1303. you don't put the

  1304. time in, then

  1305. others have to

  1306. carry the load.

  1307. There might be an

  1308. opportunity for some

  1309. of you who, because

  1310. of life circumstances,

  1311. are able to give

  1312. larger chunks of

  1313. time and ministry

  1314. to this church.

  1315. In a previous

  1316. church I belonged

  1317. to, a teacher

  1318. retired.

  1319. In fact, he was

  1320. my science

  1321. teacher.

  1322. Not that I

  1323. tried to remind

  1324. him of that.

  1325. We didn't have a

  1326. great relationship.

  1327. But he retired at

  1328. normal retirement age

  1329. for a teacher and

  1330. immediately got

  1331. himself ordained into

  1332. the Anglican church to

  1333. serve his local church

  1334. in a full-time

  1335. capacity, now that

  1336. he'd retired.

  1337. And he still

  1338. ministers there in

  1339. his early 80s,

  1340. still ministers, I

  1341. think, four days a

  1342. week doing ministry

  1343. in that church as

  1344. part of the staff

  1345. team.

  1346. Secondly, talents.

  1347. Bibles uses the

  1348. language of gifts.

  1349. I'm going to launch

1350. more into this a bit

  1351. next week and we

  1352. talked about it

  1353. already today, so I'm

  1354. not going to go

  1355. further into talents

  1356. and gifts.

  1357. Third, and the

  1358. final way you can

  1359. serve God in this

  1360. world is with your

  1361. treasure.

  1362. next Sunday is, no,

  1363. two Sundays time is

  1364. Vision Sunday.

  1365. It's Vision Sunday

  1366. where we ask our

  1367. people here at St.

  1368. Paul's, you, their

  1369. church family, to make

  1370. a financial pledge for

  1371. the ministry of St.

  1372. Paul's into 2020 and

  1373. to continue for this

  1374. vision to go forward.

  1375. We're also asking you

1376. to give us, in two

  1377. Sundays time, $75,000 to

  1378. support the work of

  1379. developing the gifting

  1380. of others to serve

  1381. God's global mission.

  1382. Wherever these people

  1383. might go in vocational

  1384. ministry, I would love

  1385. them to leave St.

  1386. Paul's, if they're not

  1387. here, to leave St.

  1388. Paul's with God's vision

1389. for his church that he

1390. has here to take it

  1391. wherever he has, has

1392. sends them to be unifying

  1393. for their neighborhood.

1394. No less than five times

1395. in the New Testament, the

  1396. language of supporting a

  1397. missionary or supporting a

  1398. church financially is

  1399. described as ministry,

  1400. described as a service.

1401. Some of us here have a

  1402. special gift of giving.

1403. It's part of what God has

  1404. given you in displaying,

  1405. disseminating his gifts to

  1406. us.

1407. Some of us here have a

  1408. special gift of giving.

1409. And I would be encouraging

1410. you in two Sundays time to

1411. use that gift of giving.

  1412. But regardless of that,

  1413. every single Christian has

  1414. been called into it.

1415. It might not be your gift,

1416. but it is your duty.

1417. So exercise it in two

  1418. Sundays time.

1419. A key ministry that all of

  1420. God's people are involved

  1421. in, regardless of their

1422. gifting, is to use our

  1423. treasure to serve the

  1424. conquering king and his

  1425. mission.

1426. Now, like our gifting, it

1427. is something we do in

  1428. differing degrees.

1429. We give according to what

1430. we have rather than what

  1431. we have not.

1432. The principle that I like to

1433. use here is unequal giving

  1434. but equal sacrifice.

1435. Our act of giving is an act

  1436. of worship.

1437. This is why the Bible calls

1438. us to give from our first

1439. fruits and to live on the

1440. rest rather than giving God

  1441. what is left over.

1442. If God has saved you in

  1443. Jesus Christ and gathered

  1444. you to himself, his

1445. purpose is to grow you to

1446. be like Jesus in both his

  1447. character and his work.

1448. And so my final call for you

1449. is to get behind the vision

  1450. of this church.

1451. It is unique in our context.

1452. We are seeking to do

  1453. something here which is

  1454. unique for our context.

1455. Get behind it, serve it,

1456. serve God with your time,

  1457. your talents and your

  1458. treasures.

  1459. So

  1460. please

  1461. share your

  1462. passions and your

  1463. talents and your treasures.

  1464. Your core

  1465. también

  1466. your talents and your

  1467. treasures.
