  1. Good evening all. It would be great if you could get the service outline in front of you, the sermon outline.

  2. There's paper copies floating around. If you don't have a paper copy, then you can go on the St Paul's app and you can get it there.

  3. It would be really handy in terms of where we're going tonight.

  4. John Mackay was the former president of Princeton University in the US and a missionary in South America.

  5. From his conversion in Scotland at the age of 15, he was captivated by the book of Ephesians, which is what we're going through now.

  6. We've got a little bit of chapter 2 as well as chapter 4 tonight, which is great.

  7. I'm always happy to preach chapter 2. It's a fantastic chapter.

  8. But he was captivated right from the very moment of conversion, at the age of 15, captivated by this book.

  9. And he declared it in Lateran Life, right towards the end of his life, he declared it to be his favorite book in the Bible.

  10. And he wrote this about the book of Ephesians.

  11. I did not understand what it all meant.

  12. What he's saying there is, he understood the book of Ephesians.

  13. That's basically what he's saying.

  14. What he's saying is, I'm captivated by God's cosmic agenda in the Lord Jesus, the center of his cosmic agenda, which is declared in the book of Ephesians.

  15. That's what he's saying there.

  16. And what he went on to say is that it's not so much a question of what we are to do with the book of Ephesians, but what has Ephesians got to do with you?

  17. What is it going to do to your life?

  18. With the scope of God's eternal plan, the Lord Jesus, as it did for John Mackay, will it captivate you?

  19. Will it captivate you of God's cosmic plan through the Lord Jesus and through his church with Jesus as the center?

  20. Will it captivate you?

  21. Will it become your life story?

  22. Will you set your life on contributing to that great unity of all things?

  23. That's our agenda in our vision series this year.

  24. As we've seen so far in this vision series, as we've gone through Ephesians, the Christian church, even with all of its faults, is a product of God's reconciling work.

  25. And it will, in fact, be an agent in the ultimate cosmic reconciliation of all things.

  26. In his book, God's New Society, John Stott writes that the church is central to history, is central to the gospel, and central to Christian living.

  27. The bottom line is, as Stott declares it, and as John Mackay has been captivated, and in fact the Bible says it, the church is not an option for Christians.

  28. Nor is supporting it an option for Christians.

  29. It is what Ephesians has confirmed right from the word go, and what I'm calling us to together in this series.

  30. To give your life, to serve God's global agenda, may your worldview be shaped by what God is doing in this world, first and foremost.

  31. Essentially, to serve God and each other and our neighbourhood through his church with our time, treasures and talents, is what I'm calling you to.

  32. Ephesians 1-3 is the grand vista of God's plan to be bringing everything together under the Lord Jesus.

  33. Chapter 4 onwards is how we engage with God's work in this world, what difference it makes.

  34. If this is what God's doing from all time and eternity, then the last three chapters is how we connect into that, and how that impacts the life that we live.

  35. And today, my plan is to spend, this is the third week in Ephesians 4, 1-16, and I want to continue to address this issue of spiritual gifts,

  36. and especially today, on how we discover spiritual gifts.

  37. So, I've got the outline in front of you, three main points and a lot of little sub points.

  38. So, it would be helpful if you had it in front of you.

  39. So, first of all, God's gifts, God gifts all people with talents.

  40. As Christians, we are stewards of the resources God has given us for serving the human community.

  41. And the Bible tells us that one of the most important resources that God has given us is our gifts, aptitudes, talents, and abilities.

  42. Now, a little bit of a history lesson.

  43. The church in the Middle Ages divided the world into two major categories, the religious and the secular.

  44. And those who went into full-time Christian religious work, into Christian ministry, such as priests and monks and nuns and that sort of stuff,

  45. they were regarded in the Middle Ages as being on a different spiritual footing from the rest of the people who did not go into that kind of work.

  46. One of the achievements of the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s was to overturn the secular-sacred divide in humanity.

  47. One of its achievements was to rediscover the biblical teaching of the priesthood of all believers.

  48. Martin Luther insisted that all forms of work are God-honoring callings.

  49. Martin Luther broke down the secular-sacred divide.

  50. And so he suggested to be a farmer, a builder, an artist, was just as much of a vocation,

  51. that is just as much as a calling from God, which is where the word vocation comes from.

  52. It's a calling, divine calling, just as much a vocation as to be a preacher.

  53. He came to see that from this particular view, from the Bible.

  54. He looked at the Bible and said, this is where it says,

  55. He says, God made the created world by his spirit in Genesis 1, 1-3,

  56. continues to care for and sustain it by his spirit.

  57. In Psalm 104, verse 30, watering it, enriching it, Psalm 65,

    Psalms 104:30

  58. feeding and meeting the needs of every living thing in Psalm 145 and 147.

  59. And then he goes right at the end of the Bible, in Revelation 21 and 22,

  60. we see the very purpose of God's eternal plan of redemption

  61. is to massively and to finally restore the material creation back into a place of perfection.

  62. That is, Luther made the point, as did the other reformers,

  63. that God loves this created world so much

  64. that he sent his son to redeem it.

  65. That is, this world is a good in and of itself.

  66. This world in which we live is not just a temporary theatre for individual salvation.

  67. Very important point.

  68. It's not just a temporary theatre of individual salvation.

  69. If the Holy Spirit is not only a preacher that convicts people of sin and grace,

  70. but also a gardener, an artist, an investor in creation,

  71. who renews the material world,

  72. it cannot be more spiritual and God-honouring to be a preacher

  73. than to be a farmer or an artist or a banker.

  74. That was one of the really crucial points from the Protestant Reformation.

  75. That we are all, all those who are in Jesus,

  76. are all priests serving God in his world,

  77. bringing about his work in the world.

  78. So to give one example of that,

  79. proclaiming the good news of the Lord Jesus,

  80. such as what I'm doing now as a preacher,

  81. what I'm doing now is temporary work.

  82. It's temporary work.

  83. While musicianship is permanent work.

  84. In the new heavens and the new earth,

  85. when Jesus finally winds the whole show up,

  86. I won't be needed.

  87. Jesus isn't going to say,

  88. Steve, he's the pulpit for a bit,

  89. you know, tell them, Steve, how it is.

  90. It's not going to happen.

  91. My job's not needed.

  92. However, from what I can gather,

  93. from Revelations and other parts of the Bible,

  94. we are going to be singing the praises of our God

  95. for a very long time.

  96. And so, from what I can gather,

  97. therefore, that Nick will be gainfully employed,

  98. but I won't be.

  99. In fact, I can't even go back to my old profession

  100. of feral animal control,

  101. because I'm figuring that's not going to happen in heaven either.

  102. So, who knows what I'm going to be doing.

  103. I've got no idea.

  104. Handing out the cheese platters, maybe.

  105. Who knows?

  106. I'll carry Nick's guitar case.

  107. So, all work, according to God's design,

  108. is service.

  109. And through work,

  110. we enrich one another

  111. and become more and more interwoven.

  112. So, the first point is that God gifts every single person,

  113. Christian or not,

  114. with talents to serve his purpose.

  115. His work in the world.

  116. When Christians do secular work,

  117. they function as salt and light in the world,

  118. according to Matthew 5.

  119. Farming and business, childcare and law,

  120. medicine and music,

  121. all these forms of work,

  122. cultivate, care for and sustain

  123. the created world that God made and loves.

  124. We are all ministers,

  125. all full-time priests to the human community,

  126. serving others on God's behalf.

  127. So, you got the point?

  128. All forms of work in God's world

  129. are based on God's gifting of all people.

  130. Isaiah 28,

    Isaiah 28:24–29

  131. verses 24 to 29,

  132. we read,

  133. when a farmer plows for planting

  134. and has leveled the surface.

  135. Does he not plant wheat in its place,

  136. barley in its plot,

  137. and svelte in its field?

  138. Has God,

  139. his God,

  140. instructs him

  141. and teaches him the right way?

  142. All this also comes from the Lord Almighty,

  143. wonderful in counsel

  144. and magnificent in wisdom.

  145. Isaiah is teaching here

  146. that anyone who becomes a skillful farmer

  147. is being taught by God

  148. to be a skillful farmer.

  149. Isaiah 45, verse 1,

    Isaiah 45:1

  150. we read of Cyrus,

  151. pagan king,

  152. whom God anoints with his spirit

  153. and chooses for world leadership.

  154. This shows that God's spirit

  155. can equip people for work

  156. even though they are not believers

  157. and are not directly witnessing

  158. to God in their work.

  159. God gives wisdom,

  160. he gives courage,

  161. he gives insight to people

  162. to do their work.

  163. That shouldn't surprise us

  164. because James 1, 17 says

  165. that every good and perfect gift

  166. is from above,

  167. from the Father of the heavenly lights.

  168. Every act of goodness,

  169. wisdom,

  170. justice and beauty,

  171. no matter who does it,

  172. is being enabled by God.

  173. It is a gift

  174. and therefore,

  175. it's a form of grace

  176. even though it's not saving grace.

  177. So that's the first point.

  178. God gives all people,

  179. not just Christians,

  180. talents,

  181. abilities

  182. for serving

  183. the human community

  184. that we might flourish together.

  185. However, secondly,

  186. God gives his people

  187. spiritual gifts.

  188. Ephesians 4,

  189. as we've gone through,

  190. we just had it read again tonight,

  191. last couple of weeks,

  192. Romans 12,

  193. 1 Corinthians 12, 14,

  194. have lists of gifts

  195. to minister to others

  196. in Jesus' name.

  197. As people creating God's image,

  198. Christians have natural talents

  199. that God's gifted them with

  200. and as people regenerated

  201. by the Holy Spirit,

  202. they also have spiritual gifts

  203. that equip them for ministry

  204. in and through the church.

  205. in essence,

  206. a spiritual gift

  207. is a God-given capacity

  208. to express

  209. or minister

  210. Jesus Christ

  211. so that those

  212. who receive the service

  213. will see Jesus

  214. and grow in him

  215. to his glory.

  216. when our gifts,

  217. spiritual gifts,

  218. are used

  219. in the power

  220. of the Holy Spirit

  221. from whom they come,

  222. then Christ himself

  223. is ministering

  224. directly

  225. through us

  226. to his people.

  227. Remember,

  228. that's what this passage

  229. is about,

  230. Ephesians 4.

  231. He ascended

  232. and gave

  233. his gifts,

  234. his ministering ability

  235. to his people.

  236. We become

  237. his mouth,

  238. his hands,

  239. his feet

  240. to fulfill

  241. each day

  242. his ministry

  243. to others.

  244. So this means

  245. that Christians

  246. not only must determine

  247. how their talents

  248. equip them

  249. for a certain range

  250. of work,

  251. but also

  252. how their

  253. spiritual gifts

  254. equip them

  255. for a certain range

  256. of ministry

  257. in Christ's name.

  258. God may

  259. adopt

  260. a talent

  261. that he's given you

  262. as a human being.

  263. He may

  264. adopt a talent

  265. and use it

  266. spiritually

  267. to build others

  268. up in the church

  269. but he also

  270. may not.

  271. He also

  272. may not.

  273. Just because

  274. you're a banker

  275. doesn't mean

  276. that your

  277. spiritual gift

  278. in the church

  279. is to be

  280. the treasurer.

  281. There may be

  282. no correlation

  283. between the two.

  284. Ultimately,

  285. however,

  286. both talents

  287. and gifts

  288. are from the

  289. spirit of God.

  290. So,

  291. last point,

  292. let's focus

  293. on this one.

  294. How do we

  295. discover

  296. gifts

  297. to serve?

  298. A Christian

  299. has to consider,

  300. as I said,

  301. both questions.

  302. What has God

  303. called and

  304. equipped me for

  305. in my vocation,

  306. my career,

  307. my work

  308. in the world

  309. and how is God

  310. calling me to

  311. serve in and

  312. through the church?

  313. Now,

  314. the difficulty

  315. of this

  316. is that

  317. very little

  318. appears in the

  319. Bible

  320. about the

  321. process

  322. by which

  323. you discover

  324. your

  325. spiritual

  326. gifts.

  327. There are,

  328. therefore,

  329. problems

  330. with

  331. almost

  332. any

  333. prescribed

  334. definitive

  335. 10-step

  336. process

  337. towards

  338. discovering

  339. gifts.

  340. The traditional

  341. approach

  342. that has

  343. happened,

  344. you can go

  345. to Coorong

  346. and buy

  347. books on

  348. this sort

  349. of stuff,

  350. leads people

  351. to test

  352. themselves

  353. in ways

  354. which are

  355. very similar

  356. to what

  357. you would

  358. call

  359. apt

  360. test

  361. that you

  362. would get

  363. in a

  364. secular

  365. workforce.

  366. The problem

  367. with this

  368. approach

  369. is that

  370. it assumes

  371. that you

  372. know

  373. yourself

  374. quite well

  375. and the

  376. fact is

  377. majority

  378. of people

  379. don't

  380. know

  381. themselves

  382. very well.

  383. In some

  384. rare cases

  385. a person's

  386. church

  387. ministry

  388. becomes

  389. their

  390. full-time

  391. vocation.

  392. That is

  393. your

  394. spiritual

  395. gifting

  396. also

  397. becomes

  398. your

  399. job

  400. as in

  401. my

  402. case.

  403. And then

  404. at this

  405. point

  406. the answer

  407. to both

  408. those

  409. questions

  410. collide

  411. so it's

  412. kind of

  413. easy.

  414. In most

  415. cases

  416. however

  417. Christians

  418. must answer

  419. each

  420. question

  421. separately.

  422. Sometimes

  423. what you

  424. do in

  425. your

  426. vocation

  427. is very

  428. similar

  429. to what

  430. you will

  431. do

  432. in the

  433. church.

  434. You may

  435. be a

  436. teacher

  437. a

  438. strategic

  439. planner

  440. or an

  441. artist

  442. outside

  443. the

  444. church

  445. and

  446. you

  447. will

  448. use

  449. those

  450. same

  451. talents

  452. because

  453. God

  454. has

  455. taken

  456. them

  457. and

  458. utilized

  459. them

  460. as

  461. spiritual

  462. gifts

  463. inside

  464. the

  465. church.

  466. In other

  467. cases

  468. you might

  469. find God

  470. calling you

  471. to do

  472. almost

  473. completely

  474. different

  475. sort of

  476. work

  477. in the

  478. church

  479. than

  480. what you

  481. do

  482. outside

  483. in your

  484. vocation.

  485. The

  486. banker

  487. is not

  488. necessarily

  489. the

  490. treasurer

  491. but their

  492. gifting

  493. might be

  494. to be

  495. a

  496. wonderful

  497. kids

  498. church

  499. teacher.

  500. That's

  501. possible.

  502. There's

  503. no

  504. correlation

  505. between

  506. your

  507. vocation

  508. and

  509. your

  510. spiritual

  511. gifting.

  512. So

  513. having

  514. said

  515. there's

  516. all

  517. kinds

  518. of

  519. problems

  520. with

  521. any

  522. system

  523. let me

  524. just

  525. throw

  526. one

  527. in

  528. front

  529. of

  530. you.

  531. This

  532. is a

  533. three

  534. part

  535. method

  536. for

  537. discerning

  538. a

  539. call

  540. whether

  541. to

  542. secular

  543. work

  544. or

  545. church

  546. work

  547. or

  548. anything

  549. else

  550. really.

  551. And

  552. I

  553. get

  554. this

  555. from

  556. the

  557. great

  558. Anglican

  559. minister

  560. of

  561. amazing

  562. grace

  563. fame

  564. John

  565. Newton.

  566. Newton

  567. suggested

  568. that to

  569. discern

  570. a

  571. ministry

  572. call

  573. we

  574. consult

  575. three

  576. factors

  577. affinity

  578. ability

  579. and

  580. opportunity.

  581. So

  582. affinity

  583. is

  584. looking

  585. outward

  586. beyond

  587. you.

  588. And

  589. it's

  590. asking

  591. the

  592. question

  593. what

  594. people

  595. need

  596. do I

  597. resonate

  598. to?

  599. Do I

  600. kind

  601. of

  602. like

  603. vibrate

  604. towards?

  605. Contrary

  606. to what

  607. many

  608. books

  609. on

  610. spiritual

  611. gifting

  612. will

  613. say

  614. to

  615. you

  616. do

  617. not

  618. start

  619. with

  620. yourself.

  621. Do

  622. not

  623. begin

  624. with

  625. you.

  626. Begin

  627. beyond

  628. you.

  629. Don't

  630. start

  631. with

  632. the

  633. abstract

  634. inventory

  635. of

  636. your

  637. gifts

  638. and

  639. skills

  640. to

  641. discern

  642. your

  643. aptitudes.

  644. Aptitude

  645. tests

  646. are based

  647. on

  648. past

  649. experience

  650. and

  651. self

  652. knowledge

  653. and

  654. self

  655. knowledge

  656. is

  657. incredibly

  658. limited.

  659. We've

  660. already

  661. seen

  662. that

  663. in the

  664. last

  665. couple

  666. of

  667. weeks.

  668. Even

  669. though

  670. it is

  671. one

  672. of

  673. the

  674. ways

  675. God

  676. shows

  677. you

  678. your

  679. ministry,

  680. I

  681. don't

  682. suggest

  683. that

  684. you

  685. start

  686. here

  687. though.

  688. Look

  689. to

  690. the

  691. concrete

  692. needs

  693. where

  694. God

  695. has

  696. placed

  697. you.

  698. What

  699. do

  700. you

  701. vibrate

  702. towards?

  703. What

  704. problems

  705. and

  706. kinds

  707. of

  708. people

  709. or

  710. ministry

  711. needs

  712. move

  713. you?

  714. Where

  715. are you

  716. moved

  717. internally?

  718. In

  719. Acts

    Acts 17:16

  720. 17

  721. verse

  722. 16

  723. we

  724. are

  725. told

  726. that

  727. the

  728. apostle

  729. Paul

  730. experienced

  731. inner

  732. grief

  733. and

  734. turmoil.

  735. He

  736. was

  737. moved

  738. in

  739. his

  740. affections.

  741. He

  742. experienced

  743. inner

  744. grief

  745. and

  746. turmoil

  747. as

  748. he

  749. comes

  750. into

  751. Athens

  752. and

  753. sees

  754. all

  755. the

  756. idols

  757. of

  758. Athens.

  759. And

  760. he

  761. finds

  762. one

  763. idol

  764. to

  765. the

  766. unknown

  767. God.

  768. And

  769. from

  770. that

  771. the

  772. very

  773. next

  774. verse

  775. we

  776. see

  777. this

  778. led

  779. him

  780. having

  781. been

  782. moved

  783. in

  784. his

  785. affections

  786. he

  787. launches

  788. into

  789. a

  790. ministry

  791. apologetics

  792. to

  793. help

  794. them

  795. see

  796. what

  797. they

  798. cannot

  799. see.

  800. It's

  801. important

  802. that we

  803. get

  804. into

  805. ministry

  806. with

  807. a

  808. passion

  809. for

  810. a

  811. certain

  812. cause

  813. or

  814. unmet

  815. need.

  816. Paul

  817. was

  818. moved

  819. by

  820. their

  821. need

  822. and

  823. sought

  824. to

  825. meet

  826. it

  827. with

  828. the

  829. gospel.

  830. See

  831. one of

  832. the

  833. reasons

  834. not

  835. to

  836. start

  837. with

  838. a

  839. knowledge

  840. of

  841. your

  842. abilities

  843. is

  844. because

  845. gifts

  846. often

  847. pop up

  848. and out

  849. and surprise

  850. us

  851. as we

  852. start to

  853. participate

  854. in

  855. serving.

  856. They're

  857. kind of

  858. like

  859. dormant

  860. until

  861. you

  862. start

  863. serving

  864. in

  865. all

  866. kinds

  867. of

  868. different

  869. capacities.

  870. When

  871. I

  872. first

  873. became

  874. a

  875. Christian

  876. I

  877. put

  878. my

  879. hand

  880. up

  881. to

  882. do

  883. whatever

  884. was

  885. required

  886. in

  887. the

  888. church.

  889. 23

  890. just

  891. loved

  892. the

  893. church

  894. and

  895. just

  896. wanted

  897. to

  898. be

  899. involved.

  900. I

  901. was

  902. captivated

  903. by

  904. the

  905. gospel

  906. involved

  907. in

  908. the

  909. community

  910. that

  911. I

  912. was

  913. a

  914. part

  915. of.

  916. I

  917. inevitably

  918. started

  919. with

  920. what

  921. I

  922. knew

  923. where

  924. my

  925. aptitudes

  926. my

  927. talents

  928. were.

  929. I

  930. could

  931. cut

  932. the

  933. grass

  934. so

  935. I

  936. cut

  937. the

  938. grass.

  939. I

  940. repaired

  941. buildings.

  942. I

  943. dealt

  944. with

  945. vermin.

  946. I

  947. was

  948. what

  949. I

  950. was

  951. used

  952. to.

  953. I

  954. just

  955. did

  956. that

  957. sort

  958. of

  959. stuff.

  960. Soon

  961. enough

  962. the

  963. minister

  964. of the

  965. church

  966. started

  967. to push

  968. me

  969. beyond

  970. my

  971. natural

  972. talents

  973. and

  974. aptitudes

  975. to test

  976. my

  977. spiritual

  978. gifting

  979. and

  980. started

  981. to

  982. encourage

  983. me

  984. to

  985. do

  986. hospital

  987. visiting,

  988. trained

  989. me

  990. in

  991. evangelism,

  992. service

  993. leading,

  994. leading

  995. community

  996. groups.

  997. I was

  998. on parish

  999. council

  1000. organizing

  1001. camps.

  1002. Bit

  1003. by bit

  1004. just

  1005. kept

  1006. pushing

  1007. me

  1008. to do

  1009. a

  1010. whole

  1011. range

  1012. of

  1013. things.

  1014. gifts

  1015. started

  1016. to

  1017. pop

  1018. up

  1019. over

  1020. time.

  1021. And

  1022. I

  1023. would

  1024. never

  1025. have

  1026. known

  1027. it

  1028. until

  1029. he

  1030. pushed

  1031. me

  1032. into

  1033. it.

  1034. Say,

  1035. give

  1036. that

  1037. a go,

  1038. have

  1039. that

  1040. a

  1041. crack

  1042. at

  1043. that.

  1044. The

  1045. first

  1046. time

  1047. I

  1048. ever

  1049. preached

  1050. a

  1051. sermon,

  1052. no

  1053. one

  1054. would

  1055. have

  1056. said,

  1057. oh,

  1058. he's

  1059. got

  1060. a

  1061. gifting.

  1062. Not

  1063. a

  1064. single

  1065. person,

  1066. except

  1067. the

  1068. one

  1069. preacher

  1070. sitting

  1071. in

  1072. the

  1073. room.

  1074. I

  1075. think

  1076. he

  1077. called

  1078. me

  1079. a

  1080. rough

  1081. rock

  1082. that

  1083. need

  1084. if

  1085. you

  1086. had

  1087. just

  1088. knocked

  1089. off

  1090. it.

  1091. He

  1092. said,

  1093. but I

  1094. think

  1095. we

  1096. can

  1097. do

  1098. that.

  1099. It

  1100. didn't

  1101. start

  1102. with my

  1103. talents

  1104. and my

  1105. aptitudes,

  1106. or it

  1107. sort of

  1108. did,

  1109. but

  1110. very

  1111. short

  1112. time,

  1113. and

  1114. it

  1115. moved

  1116. quickly

  1117. beyond

  1118. that.

  1119. And

  1120. ultimately,

  1121. it

  1122. started

  1123. with a

  1124. need.

  1125. When

  1126. he

  1127. started

  1128. to push

  1129. me

  1130. into

  1131. ministry,

  1132. he

  1133. said,

  1134. we

  1135. need

  1136. a

  1137. youth

  1138. group

  1139. here,

  1140. you

  1141. should

  1142. start

  1143. one.

  1144. That's

  1145. the job

  1146. description.

  1147. That was

  1148. it.

  1149. What

  1150. became

  1151. obvious to

  1152. the leaders

  1153. of my

  1154. first

  1155. church

  1156. was I

  1157. had

  1158. gifting

  1159. for church

  1160. leadership

  1161. that

  1162. would

  1163. develop

  1164. and be

  1165. fruitful,

  1166. providing

  1167. my

  1168. character

  1169. developed.

  1170. Because

  1171. what they

  1172. noticed

  1173. is that

  1174. when I

  1175. cut the

  1176. grass,

  1177. I was

  1178. able to

  1179. galvanize

  1180. people to

  1181. come with

  1182. me and

  1183. to cut

  1184. the grass.

  1185. when I

  1186. went and

  1187. did

  1188. hospital

  1189. visiting,

  1190. I took

  1191. other

  1192. people

  1193. with

  1194. me.

  1195. They

  1196. noticed

  1197. that

  1198. people

  1199. would

  1200. follow.

  1201. When I

  1202. organized

  1203. camps,

  1204. I could

  1205. pull a

  1206. team

  1207. together.

  1208. What

  1209. they

  1210. didn't

  1211. know,

  1212. what they

  1213. could never

  1214. have seen,

  1215. was God

  1216. would give

  1217. me a

  1218. passion for

  1219. cross-cultural

  1220. ministry and

  1221. multi-ethnic

  1222. church

  1223. leadership.

  1224. And I

  1225. didn't even

  1226. see that

  1227. 12 years

  1228. ago.

  1229. And still

  1230. I started

  1231. working in

  1232. that space.

  1233. Gifts

  1234. pop out

  1235. when you

  1236. just do

  1237. it.

  1238. You just

  1239. serve.

  1240. So that's

  1241. the first

  1242. one.

  1243. Affinity.

  1244. Look out.

  1245. Secondly,

  1246. ability,

  1247. which is

  1248. look in.

  1249. That is,

  1250. what are my

  1251. abilities,

  1252. what are my

  1253. skills,

  1254. what are my

  1255. talents,

  1256. what are my

  1257. deficiencies?

  1258. It's important

  1259. to look at

  1260. your abilities.

  1261. Many people

  1262. become burdened

  1263. to see a

  1264. ministry

  1265. begin,

  1266. but they're

  1267. not realistic

  1268. about their

  1269. own abilities

  1270. and limitations.

  1271. For example,

  1272. there might be

  1273. some people

  1274. who are just

  1275. so keen to

  1276. be leaders,

  1277. even though

  1278. they don't

  1279. have the

  1280. gifting of

  1281. organizing,

  1282. and they

  1283. haven't even

  1284. noticed that

  1285. no one's

  1286. actually following

  1287. them at this

  1288. moment.

  1289. They don't

  1290. have the

  1291. ability to

  1292. galvanize

  1293. people.

  1294. It's one of

  1295. the questions I

  1296. ask of people

  1297. who are

  1298. considering

  1299. vocational

  1300. ministries,

  1301. to go

  1302. into my

  1303. kind of

  1304. role.

  1305. What

  1306. ministries

  1307. have you

  1308. started?

  1309. What

  1310. ministries

  1311. have you

  1312. changed?

  1313. What

  1314. ministries

  1315. have you

  1316. shut

  1317. down?

  1318. Really

  1319. important.

  1320. It

  1321. takes

  1322. courage to

  1323. start

  1324. something,

  1325. it takes

  1326. leadership to

  1327. stop it.

  1328. you must

  1329. be very

  1330. aware of

  1331. the part

  1332. you are

  1333. able to

  1334. play in

  1335. the ministry.

  1336. What

  1337. should you

  1338. be doing

  1339. and what

  1340. you need

  1341. someone else

  1342. to be

  1343. doing?

  1344. Also have

  1345. the maturity

  1346. recognize how

  1347. young and old

  1348. you are in

  1349. the faith.

  1350. You may

  1351. realize that

  1352. your godliness

  1353. does not

  1354. cover your

  1355. gift deficiencies

  1356. very well and

  1357. you therefore

  1358. need a strong

  1359. team around

  1360. you.

  1361. Just a

  1362. warning here,

  1363. on this

  1364. one.

  1365. As we

  1366. exercise our

  1367. spiritual gifts

  1368. we need to

  1369. avoid the

  1370. great problem

  1371. of gift

  1372. cop-out.

  1373. Every

  1374. single one

  1375. of the

  1376. gifts,

  1377. the spiritual

  1378. gifts,

  1379. is also a

  1380. task or

  1381. an assignment

  1382. given to

  1383. all Christians.

  1384. Not all

  1385. are evangelists

  1386. but every

  1387. one of us

  1388. are called

  1389. to witness.

  1390. Not all

  1391. of us have

  1392. the specific

  1393. gift of

  1394. giving but

  1395. all of us

  1396. are called

  1397. to a

  1398. life of

  1399. radical

  1400. generosity.

  1401. Not all

  1402. of us

  1403. have the

  1404. gifts of

  1405. service and

  1406. care of

  1407. another

  1408. individual but

  1409. all of us

  1410. are called

  1411. into a

  1412. ministry of

  1413. serving others

  1414. and caring

  1415. for people.

  1416. Gift cop-out

  1417. is saying

  1418. since I'm not

  1419. gifted in that

  1420. I won't have

  1421. to do that.

  1422. And normally

  1423. we practice

  1424. gift cop-out

  1425. when we look

  1426. at our

  1427. vocational

  1428. work and

  1429. can't see a

  1430. connection.

  1431. I'm a

  1432. banker and

  1433. unless you

  1434. make me the

  1435. treasurer

  1436. there's no

  1437. way I'm doing

  1438. anything else.

  1439. That's the

  1440. only job I

  1441. can do here.

  1442. That's gift

  1443. cop-out.

  1444. So lastly

  1445. of opportunity.

  1446. This is

  1447. looking up.

  1448. And the

  1449. question here

  1450. is where

  1451. does the

  1452. church and

  1453. its leaders

  1454. tell me

  1455. where I'm

  1456. needed?

  1457. This is where

  1458. the character

  1459. of humility

  1460. comes in.

  1461. The third

  1462. leg in

  1463. identifying

  1464. our

  1465. spiritual

  1466. gifts

  1467. is

  1468. opportunity.

  1469. Now with

  1470. this one

  1471. we need

  1472. to be aware

  1473. of the

  1474. opposite

  1475. danger

  1476. of

  1477. gift

  1478. cop-out

  1479. and that

  1480. is

  1481. gift

  1482. projection.

  1483. Based on

  1484. everything we've

  1485. seen in the

  1486. past few

  1487. weeks we

  1488. must fight

  1489. against

  1490. individualism

  1491. in the way

  1492. we discern

  1493. our

  1494. ministry

  1495. giftings.

  1496. Gift

  1497. projection

  1498. works in a

  1499. whole different

  1500. number of

  1501. ways.

  1502. It can be

  1503. as simple

  1504. as saying

  1505. this is my

  1506. gift

  1507. and it's

  1508. your job

  1509. to make

  1510. this gift

  1511. work in

  1512. this place.

  1513. This is my

  1514. spiritual

  1515. gifting.

  1516. Self-identified

  1517. gifting.

  1518. This is my

  1519. role.

  1520. This is my

  1521. gifting.

  1522. You use

  1523. it.

  1524. That's it.

  1525. I won't do

  1526. anything else.

  1527. Or it can

  1528. be making

  1529. yourself feel

  1530. guilty if

  1531. you aren't as

  1532. gifted or as

  1533. good as

  1534. someone else

  1535. is in that

  1536. space.

  1537. Or on the

  1538. other hand

  1539. it may be

  1540. making others

  1541. feel guilty

  1542. that they

  1543. aren't as

  1544. passionate or

  1545. as good at

  1546. you at

  1547. doing what

  1548. you are

  1549. doing.

  1550. That's gift

  1551. projection.

  1552. In projecting

  1553. our gifts

  1554. and our

  1555. passions

  1556. it is all

  1557. too easy

  1558. to try

  1559. to make

  1560. the whole

  1561. church

  1562. into our

  1563. own image.

  1564. You know

  1565. I've got the

  1566. gift of

  1567. evangelism

  1568. for instance

  1569. and so I

  1570. want to make

  1571. this strictly

  1572. an evangelistic

  1573. church.

  1574. Everyone should

  1575. be evangelized.

  1576. everyone needs

  1577. to evangelize

  1578. like me.

  1579. Or I've

  1580. got the

  1581. passion for

  1582. justice

  1583. ministry so

  1584. this has to

  1585. be a

  1586. justice

  1587. church and

  1588. everyone else

  1589. has to have

  1590. the same

  1591. passion and

  1592. gifting for

  1593. justice ministry

  1594. that I do.

  1595. Or for it to

  1596. be a cultural

  1597. center.

  1598. I'm so focused

  1599. on one-to-one

  1600. discipleship and

  1601. everyone should

  1602. be doing one-to-one

  1603. discipleship.

  1604. That's gift

  1605. projection.

  1606. That's passion

  1607. projection.

  1608. And it's making

  1609. everyone in the

  1610. same image.

  1611. huge.

  1612. The third

  1613. leg of gift

  1614. discovery looks

  1615. to the

  1616. community, my

  1617. brothers and

  1618. sisters, for

  1619. guidance.

  1620. The doctrine of

  1621. sin alone should

  1622. be enough to

  1623. prove that you

  1624. should not be

  1625. trying to make

  1626. this decision by

  1627. yourself.

  1628. Ephesians 4

  1629. teaches that when

  1630. we become

  1631. Christians we

  1632. become members

  1633. of one another.

  1634. We cannot

  1635. understand ourselves

  1636. without paying

  1637. attention to what

  1638. our brothers and

  1639. sisters can see

  1640. in us.

  1641. there may be

  1642. opportunities for

  1643. us to serve

  1644. that we have

  1645. never considered

  1646. but for which we

  1647. are perfect.

  1648. Now one key

  1649. factor here

  1650. and that is that

  1651. we are under the

  1652. authority of our

  1653. leaders.

  1654. Hebrews 13

  1655. 7 says

  1656. remember your

  1657. leaders who

  1658. spoke the word

  1659. of God to you

  1660. consider the

  1661. outcome of their

  1662. way of life and

  1663. imitate their

  1664. faith.

  1665. And verse 17

  1666. goes on to say

  1667. have confidence

  1668. in your leaders

  1669. and submit to

  1670. their authority

  1671. because they

  1672. keep watch over

  1673. you as those

  1674. who must give

  1675. an account.

  1676. Do this so

  1677. that their work

  1678. will be a joy

  1679. not a burden

  1680. for that would

  1681. be of no

  1682. benefit to you.

  1683. The reality

  1684. is we should

  1685. bow to what

  1686. our leaders

  1687. may tell us

  1688. are the

  1689. church's needs.

  1690. These are the

  1691. areas of needs.

  1692. God put us

  1693. into a community

  1694. and we discern

  1695. his will and

  1696. his calling

  1697. together.

  1698. So I

  1699. propose

  1700. as John

  1701. Newton did

  1702. 200 years

  1703. before me

  1704. that the

  1705. place to

  1706. start

  1707. when you

  1708. look at

  1709. these three

  1710. categories

  1711. these three

  1712. legs

  1713. the place

  1714. to start

  1715. is opportunity.

  1716. That's where

  1717. you begin.

  1718. Our

  1719. self-centered

  1720. individualistic

  1721. natures

  1722. want us to

  1723. go with

  1724. affinity

  1725. first

  1726. or ability

  1727. ability

  1728. first

  1729. then affinity

  1730. then opportunity.

  1731. I would suggest

  1732. that we start

  1733. with opportunity.

  1734. In other words

  1735. find

  1736. the ministry

  1737. needs of the

  1738. church

  1739. things that

  1740. need to be

  1741. done

  1742. and just

  1743. do them.

  1744. Just serve.

  1745. Don't even

  1746. begin with

  1747. does this

  1748. fulfill me?

  1749. Does it

  1750. make me

  1751. happy?

  1752. the only

  1753. way you

  1754. will ever

  1755. really come

  1756. to know

  1757. the kind

  1758. of ministry

  1759. that you

  1760. are best

  1761. at

  1762. if you

  1763. do a

  1764. whole heap

  1765. of different

  1766. things

  1767. then you

  1768. will know

  1769. what God

  1770. blesses.

  1771. Don't look

  1772. first of all

  1773. at your

  1774. proven

  1775. abilities.

  1776. Don't look

  1777. first of all

  1778. at your

  1779. day job

  1780. and your

  1781. natural

  1782. talents

  1783. to determine

  1784. what you

  1785. do in

  1786. the church

  1787. because as

  1788. mentioned

  1789. earlier

  1790. God may

  1791. have no

  1792. plan to

  1793. use them

  1794. as your

  1795. spiritual

  1796. gifts.

  1797. Likewise

  1798. don't look

  1799. first of all

  1800. at your

  1801. deepest

  1802. affinities

  1803. the things

  1804. that excite

  1805. you

  1806. the things

  1807. that interest

  1808. you.

  1809. If you

  1810. gravitate

  1811. too quickly

  1812. to those

  1813. areas

  1814. you may

  1815. miss out

  1816. on gifts

  1817. that you

  1818. aren't even

  1819. aware of.

  1820. Just

  1821. serve.

  1822. That's the

  1823. simple call.

  1824. Plug the

  1825. gaps in

  1826. the church

  1827. and help

  1828. out.

  1829. Go through

  1830. the door

  1831. of opportunity

  1832. in the

  1833. church

  1834. doing what

  1835. needs to

  1836. be done

  1837. and then

  1838. as time

  1839. goes by

  1840. check your

  1841. affinities

  1842. check your

  1843. abilities

  1844. and begin

  1845. to specialise.

  1846. As your

  1847. brothers and

  1848. sisters around

  1849. you encourage

  1850. you to do

  1851. that.

  1852. There may be

  1853. and in fact

  1854. there are

  1855. many opportunities

  1856. right now.

  1857. Right now.

  1858. I'll mention

  1859. them to you

  1860. but this

  1861. morning one

  1862. thing that I

  1863. threw in

  1864. this morning

  1865. was actually

  1866. we've been

  1867. looking for a

  1868. treasurer for

  1869. some time.

  1870. No one's

  1871. stepping up for

  1872. that.

  1873. By the end

  1874. of the service

  1875. someone had put

  1876. their hand up

  1877. and said I

  1878. think I can

  1879. do the

  1880. treasury roll.

  1881. Praise God.

  1882. So God's

  1883. already at work

  1884. and maybe he's

  1885. working at you

  1886. right now.

  1887. Working at you

  1888. right now.

  1889. He did it this

  1890. morning and

  1891. maybe right now

  1892. for you.

  1893. We just need

  1894. people willing

  1895. to serve in

  1896. all sorts

  1897. areas and

  1898. membership.

  1899. We want to

  1900. be a

  1901. community.

  1902. A community

  1903. that is

  1904. engaging,

  1905. welcome,

  1906. inclusive.

  1907. We want

  1908. people to

  1909. belong here.

  1910. We've just

  1911. seen the

  1912. video.

  1913. We need

  1914. people who

  1915. are welcoming,

  1916. people in

  1917. the car park.

  1918. As soon as

  1919. someone sets

  1920. foot on this

  1921. site to be

  1922. engaged with,

  1923. for their name

  1924. to be known,

  1925. for them to

  1926. feel like they

  1927. belong.

  1928. We need

  1929. people who are

  1930. prepared to

  1931. serve food

  1932. for us in

  1933. our corporate

  1934. gatherings.

  1935. We want to

  1936. be an open

  1937. engaging

  1938. community.

  1939. Right now,

  1940. we need

  1941. people in

  1942. membership.

  1943. Secondly,

  1944. we need

  1945. more people

  1946. willing to

  1947. serve in

  1948. our ESL

  1949. classes.

  1950. That's a

  1951. great way to

  1952. serve people

  1953. who are not

  1954. able to

  1955. easily

  1956. communicate in

  1957. the common

  1958. language of

  1959. our neighborhood.

  1960. That is,

  1961. ESL is about

  1962. serving vulnerable

  1963. people in our

  1964. neighborhood.

  1965. That's what it's

  1966. about.

  1967. At the

  1968. moment,

  1969. we've got

  1970. two or

  1971. three people,

  1972. that's it,

  1973. who are

  1974. currently running

  1975. it.

  1976. Massive need

  1977. in that area.

  1978. Thirdly,

  1979. there's grace

  1980. ministries.

  1981. This is our

  1982. ministry to

  1983. sex workers in

  1984. our area.

  1985. They need

  1986. another prayer

  1987. team.

  1988. This is really

  1989. simple.

  1990. You just sit

  1991. in the car

  1992. with one

  1993. other person

  1994. and you pray

  1995. with them

  1996. while a couple

  1997. of our members

  1998. go in and

  1999. visit the

  2000. brothels.

  2001. You don't

  2002. even have to

  2003. go in.

  2004. You just need

  2005. to sit in the

  2006. car and pray

  2007. for goodness

  2008. sake.

  2009. There's another

  2010. great way to be

  2011. engaged.

  2012. We need

  2013. people in

  2014. that area.

  2015. The bottom

  2016. line here is

  2017. just do it.

  2018. That's how you

  2019. discover it.

  2020. You just do

  2021. it.

  2022. Be captivated.

  2023. This is the whole

  2024. point of Ephesians

  2025. here, where we get

  2026. to here.

  2027. Be captivated by

  2028. the gospel.

  2029. Be captivated by

  2030. God's eternal

  2031. plan in the

  2032. Lord Jesus.

  2033. service.

  2034. And be

  2035. captivated by

  2036. jumping in and

  2037. signing up to

  2038. serve.

  2039. That's what you

  2040. do.

  2041. So for your

  2042. sake, for the

  2043. sake of the

  2044. church, for the

  2045. glory of the

  2046. Lord Jesus

  2047. Christ, for the

  2048. blessing of the

  2049. world, do not

  2050. rest until every

  2051. member serving is

  2052. a reality in

  2053. this church.
