  1. Do you see what I see?

  2. A rabbit or a duck?

  3. What seems impossible to work out at first,

  4. but you'll get it eventually with some help.

  5. How about this one?

  6. Imagine a duck is eating a rabbit.

  7. Can you see both of them now?

  8. It works as an illusion, but in real life,

  9. can someone be both righteous in God's eyes,

  10. but unbelieving and not sure of themselves at the same time?

  11. There are a couple in the Gospel of Luke,

  12. which we just read out.

  13. Zechariah, the husband, is a priest,

  14. and his wife, Elizabeth.

  15. And this couple is identified in verse 6 of chapter 1

  16. as both of them were righteous in the sight of God,

  17. observing all the Lord's commands and decrees painlessly.

  18. But they were childless

  19. because Elizabeth was unable to conceive,

  20. and they were both very old.

  21. Righteous in God's eyes

  22. and blameless in obeying the law,

  23. but childless.

  24. The reason is because Elizabeth was unable to conceive,

  25. and they were both very old.

  26. The word but, at the beginning of verse 7,

  27. highlight that this is out of expectation,

  28. something somewhat unusual.

  29. What would you normally expect

  30. for someone who are considered to be righteous in God's eyes

  31. and blameless in obedience?

  32. Chinese greet each other in the new year by saying this.

  33. James, can you help us?

  34. So, sin is our heart,

  35. xian is wishes,

  36. si is things,

  37. and chen is fulfilled.

  38. So if you put that together,

  39. we actually wish each other

  40. whatever we wish for will come true.

  41. We might expect the same for someone

  42. who finds favor in God's sight.

  43. They will get whatever they wish for,

  44. but this couple did not have any child.

  45. What do you think about them?

  46. Are they really righteous and blameless?

  47. If obeying God will get blessing,

  48. they do not have the blessing of child.

  49. Is there something wrong about their obedience?

  50. Let's look at Zechariah.

  51. His name,

  52. his name after a prophet

  53. that written the second last book of the Old Testament.

  54. From what we have just read,

  55. he is old,

  56. and he was called to serve in the temple

  57. by burning incense.

  58. And then in verse 11,

  59. then an angel of the Lord appeared to him,

  60. standing at the right side of the altar of incense.

  61. When Zechariah saw him,

  62. he was startled and was gripped with fear.

  63. He was startled and gripped with fear.

  64. Fair enough to be startled.

  65. I will be somewhat startled

  66. if someone appeared in front of me suddenly.

  67. But gripped with fear,

  68. terrified.

  69. What was the reason of that response?

  70. One of the reasons for his fear

  71. would have to do with his knowledge

  72. attached to his own name and the angel.

  73. His name means God remembers.

  74. If I think that God remembers

  75. both my good and bad deeds,

  76. I would be fearful.

  77. And in the Old Testament,

  78. angels were often sent to execute God's judgment.

  79. In Genesis 19,

  80. God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah

  81. by an angel.

  82. In Exodus,

  83. the angel of God brought Israel out of Egypt,

  84. led them through the wild wilderness,

  85. and drove out all the people in the promised land

  86. for them to settle there.

  87. Many examples of angels

  88. carry out God's judgment

  89. on individuals and ordinations

  90. in the book of Zechariah

  91. Zechariah

  92. and also in the Old Testament.

  93. His fear may have to do with

  94. focusing too much on what someone would call

  95. the scary side of God.

  96. They see God as an unrelenting

  97. punisher of wrong

  98. and the all-powerful,

  99. sovereign ruler

  100. that does not care.

  101. One that allows all the suffering and pain

  102. without giving any explanation.

  103. However,

  104. the Bible also talks about

  105. how God sent angels

  106. to look after widows

  107. and those in trouble

  108. like Abraham's servant wife Hagar

  109. in Genesis 16.

  110. Or in Judges 13,

  111. Samson's mom was barren

  112. and visited by an angel

  113. before she conceived him.

  114. We pick and choose

  115. the image of God

  116. that most of the time

  117. is not the complete picture

  118. of what God really is

  119. and we become fearful.

  120. Evangelist and apologist

  121. Ref. Zechariah says

  122. people always tend to have an idea

  123. that

  124. malevolence is God's doing.

  125. Benevolent is evolutionary wisdom,

  126. which means

  127. when we have a natural disaster,

  128. tragedies,

  129. or

  130. a climate-like event,

  131. those are the acts of God.

  132. But if you have a bumper crops,

  133. a beautiful day,

  134. a close brush

  135. with what should have been death

  136. but wasn't,

  137. a wonderful joy

  138. and pleasure of life

  139. are not given

  140. such beneficent source.

  141. Even though Zechariah is a priest,

  142. he is fearful

  143. because he did not see

  144. God

  145. as how God

  146. see himself,

  147. see him.

  148. Like many of us,

  149. he obeys God

  150. out of fear,

  151. out of routine

  152. and tradition.

  153. The fact that

  154. they are childless

  155. would also contribute

  156. to their uncertainty

  157. and fear.

  158. When I marry

  159. Vivian,

  160. my wife,

  161. we plan to enjoy

  162. a couple of years

  163. with our kids.

  164. After that,

  165. we try for a whole year

  166. without any success.

  167. So our GP suggested

  168. that we should do

  169. some tests

  170. started with me.

  171. And I remember

  172. a very mixed feeling

  173. of waiting

  174. for that test result

  175. about my health.

  176. And in one sense,

  177. I want a healthy report

  178. so that I was not

  179. the source of the problem.

  180. But that would mean

  181. that all the weight

  182. of that problem

  183. will fall on Vivian.

  184. And if it's what's me,

  185. it's a problem fixable.

  186. What if it's not?

  187. What other option

  188. do we have

  189. to have children?

  190. Millions of questions

  191. went through my mind.

  192. Even though

  193. they have concluded

  194. that it was

  195. Elizabeth's barrenness

  196. and her old age,

  197. Zechariah would also

  198. have questioned

  199. whether there's

  200. something wrong

  201. with him.

  202. We were told

  203. he observed

  204. all the Lord's commands

  205. and decrees

  206. blamelessly.

  207. But we weren't told

  208. why.

  209. Did he try

  210. to fix his problem

  211. or that uncertainty

  212. about himself

  213. by being ridiculous

  214. in everything he does?

  215. Did he do

  216. everything blamelessly

  217. hoping to win

  218. the favor of God

  219. in getting a child?

  220. In Zechariah,

  221. the book,

  222. chapter 7,

  223. verse 5,

  224. the word of the Lord

  225. Almighty

  226. came to Zechariah

  227. the prophet

  228. to ask his people

  229. when they were

  230. performing

  231. their religious duty,

  232. was it really

  233. for the Lord

  234. that they are

  235. doing them?

  236. Are you not just

  237. doing the duty

  238. for yourself?

  239. I used to approach

  240. religion

  241. with the same

  242. kind of mindset,

  243. treating it

  244. like a tool

  245. to better my life,

  246. treating it

  247. as a moral compass

  248. to live a good life.

  249. I still fall back

  250. into traps

  251. of being religious,

  252. having an upright,

  253. blameless life,

  254. but fearful,

  255. not 100% sure

  256. whether I have

  257. done enough.

  258. Do you sometimes

  259. feel the same way?

  260. Not sure

  261. whether you

  262. or what you do

  263. are acceptable

  264. by God.

  265. knowing his state

  266. of mind,

  267. the angel

  268. said to Zechariah

  269. back in Luke 1.13,

  270. Do not be afraid,

  271. Zechariah.

  272. Your prayer

  273. has been heard.

  274. Your wife,

  275. Elizabeth,

  276. will bear you

  277. a son

  278. and you are

  279. to call him

  280. John.

  281. He will be

  282. a joy

  283. and delight

  284. to you

  285. and many

  286. will rejoice

  287. because of

  288. his birth.

  289. The angel

  290. goes on

  291. for another

  292. three verses

  293. focusing on

  294. what his son

  295. will become

  296. and the great

  297. things he will

  298. achieve

  299. and what he

  300. needs to do

  301. his whole life.

  302. The message

  303. of the angel

  304. is clearly

  305. about his son

  306. who will call

  307. John and the

  308. Lord that he

  309. will serve.

  310. But the way

  311. Zechariah replied

  312. so that deep

  313. down he did

  314. not believe

  315. that God

  316. can do the

  317. impossible

  318. of using him

  319. in his old age

  320. and giving him

  321. a son

  322. to bring back

  323. many

  324. of the people

  325. of Israel

  326. to the Lord

  327. their God.

  328. Zechariah

  329. answered the angel

  330. how can I

  331. be sure of this?

  332. I am old man

  333. and my wife

  334. is well alone

  335. in years.

  336. The angel

  337. said to him

  338. I am Gabriel

  339. I stand

  340. in the presence

  341. of God

  342. and have been

  343. sent to speak

  344. to you

  345. and tell you

  346. this good news

  347. and now

  348. you will be

  349. silent

  350. and not able

  351. to speak

  352. until the day

  353. this happens

  354. because you

  355. did not believe

  356. my words

  357. which will

  358. come true

  359. in there

  360. upon the time.

  361. The angel

  362. Gabriel

  363. took offense

  364. of Zechariah's

  365. question

  366. and the statement

  367. about himself

  368. and his wife.

  369. What was wrong

  370. with his reply?

  371. How can I

  372. be sure of this?

  373. I am an old man

  374. and my wife

  375. is well

  376. along in years.

  377. When Gabriel

  378. was clearly

  379. focusing on

  380. the great work

  381. that God

  382. is going

  383. to do

  384. through his

  385. son

  386. and the

  387. Lord,

  388. Zechariah

  389. was focusing

  390. on himself

  391. and his

  392. wife.

  393. He is

  394. beyond doubting

  395. or questioning.

  396. He had

  397. decided that

  398. God is not

  399. going to give

  400. him a son

  401. or restore

  402. Israel

  403. in his

  404. lifetime.

  405. He asked

  406. for proof

  407. to counter

  408. his unbelief.

  409. Another

  410. apologist,

  411. Os Guinness,

  412. pointed out

  413. if people

  414. are torn

  415. between

  416. options,

  417. unable to

  418. make up

  419. their minds,

  420. or if they

  421. are up

  422. in the air

  423. over something

  424. and unsure

  425. which side

  426. they should

  427. come down

  428. on,

  429. or if they

  430. are furiously

  431. debating

  432. with themselves

  433. or hanging

  434. back,

  435. waiting up

  436. their reservation.

  437. There are

  438. nothing if

  439. not in two

  440. minds.

  441. This condition

  442. of doubleness

  443. is the

  444. essence of

  445. doubt.

  446. But

  447. Zacharias

  448. seems very

  449. resolute

  450. with his

  451. statement

  452. about himself

  453. and his

  454. wife that

  455. it is

  456. impossible

  457. for them

  458. to have

  459. a child

  460. at their

  461. conditions.

  462. Zacharias'

  463. unbelief comes

  464. from looking

  465. at his

  466. ability and

  467. condition

  468. instead of

  469. listening to

  470. and believes

  471. that word

  472. of God.

  473. He relies

  474. on his

  475. own understanding

  476. about his

  477. situation,

  478. how he

  479. sees himself

  480. instead of

  481. how God

  482. sees him

  483. and his

  484. wife.

  485. So when

  486. the angels

  487. are pleased

  488. to say

  489. that it's

  490. going to

  491. happen right

  492. then,

  493. then he

  494. asks for

  495. proof.

  496. He asks

  497. for proof,

  498. a sign of

  499. what is

  500. going to

  501. happen.

  502. So God

  503. gave him

  504. a sign by

  505. taking away

  506. his ability

  507. to speak

  508. until the

  509. day all

  510. that God

  511. has said

  512. comes true.

  513. He literally

  514. becomes what

  515. he asked

  516. for.

  517. He asked

  518. for a sign

  519. and God

  520. made him

  521. mute so he

  522. has to keep

  523. signing for

  524. nine months.

  525. God

  526. listened to

  527. what

  528. Zachariah

  529. asked of

  530. him and

  531. he

  532. became part

  533. of the

  534. answer to

  535. what he

  536. asked.

  537. People

  538. often ask

  539. or question

  540. whether the

  541. Bible is

  542. the truth,

  543. whether God's

  544. way is a

  545. way of life

  546. we should

  547. adopt and

  548. embrace.

  549. And Jesus

  550. said in

  551. John 8,

  552. 31,

  553. 32,

  554. to those

  555. who believe

  556. him,

  557. hold to

  558. Jesus'

  559. teaching,

  560. not making

  561. an excuse

  562. even before

  563. you even

  564. tried.

  565. Listen carefully

  566. to what the

  567. Bible tells

  568. us about

  569. God and

  570. how our

  571. relationship

  572. with God

  573. and with

  574. others

  575. mean to

  576. be.

  577. Live it

  578. out in

  579. your life

  580. is a

  581. way to

  582. know the

  583. truth and

  584. understand how

  585. God can

  586. do the

  587. impossible

  588. in your

  589. life.

  590. Life has

  591. changed for

  592. both

  593. Zachariah

  594. and Elizabeth

  595. after

  596. Zachariah

  597. encountered

  598. God.

  599. And new

  600. life has

  601. started in

  602. and among

  603. them,

  604. growing in

  605. Elizabeth's

  606. tummy.

  607. It's a

  608. matter of

  609. time before

  610. the good

  611. news of

  612. God

  613. will

  614. fill.

  615. We have

  616. just seen

  617. how the

  618. husband

  619. responds.

  620. Let's

  621. now look

  622. at the

  623. wife

  624. Elizabeth.

  625. After

  626. this,

  627. his wife

  628. Elizabeth

  629. becomes

  630. pregnant

  631. and for

  632. five months

  633. remains in

  634. seclusion.

  635. Why

  636. Elizabeth

  637. remains in

  638. seclusion

  639. for five

  640. months?

  641. It will

  642. be because

  643. she is

  644. very cautious

  645. and careful

  646. about her

  647. pregnancy.

  648. A general

  649. rule for

  650. a Chinese

  651. couple is

  652. not to

  653. tell anyone

  654. about any

  655. pregnancy

  656. up to

  657. three months

  658. until the

  659. new life

  660. is fully

  661. formed and

  662. settled within

  663. the mom.

  664. But why

  665. remains a

  666. Christian

  667. for five

  668. months?

  669. For

  670. what she

  671. said in

  672. verse 25,

  673. she seems

  674. to feel

  675. her new

  676. situation

  677. like

  678. Zechariah.

  679. The Lord

  680. has done

  681. this for

  682. me.

  683. She seems

  684. to be

  685. focusing

  686. on herself

  687. and her

  688. own

  689. condition.

  690. Her

  691. pregnancy

  692. was great

  693. news for

  694. new life,

  695. but too

  696. good to be

  697. true for

  698. her old

  699. age.

  700. In

  701. these days,

  702. he has

  703. shown his

  704. favor.

  705. She is

  706. also

  707. concerned

  708. about how

  709. people

  710. see her.

  711. She considers

  712. herself as

  713. a disgrace

  714. and says,

  715. God now

  716. has taken

  717. away my

  718. disgrace

  719. among the

  720. people.

  721. Having a

  722. new life

  723. is a great

  724. thing,

  725. but she

  726. was too

  727. worried to

  728. be seen

  729. as someone

  730. who had

  731. been touched

  732. by God.

  733. Every

  734. encounter

  735. with God

  736. will result

  737. in changes.

  738. The changes

  739. are done

  740. by God.

  741. like a

  742. baby

  743. growing

  744. in a

  745. woman's

  746. tummy.

  747. But it's

  748. so easy

  749. to be

  750. caught up

  751. and worry

  752. about what

  753. is happening

  754. and forget

  755. that you

  756. are part

  757. of God's

  758. great plan

  759. of the

  760. salvation

  761. to this

  762. world.

  763. Two

  764. self-focused

  765. persons,

  766. one is

  767. unbelieving,

  768. another ashamed

  769. of their

  770. own condition,

  771. seen by

  772. God as

  773. righteous and

  774. blameless

  775. in their

  776. obedience,

  777. because it

  778. was what

  779. God does

  780. in and

  781. through us

  782. that make

  783. us righteous

  784. and blameless.

  785. God is

  786. never wrong

  787. and he

  788. never makes

  789. mistakes.

  790. That is a

  791. truth we

  792. should hold

  793. on to,

  794. even though

  795. at times

  796. we are like

  797. Zechariah

  798. and Elizabeth,

  799. not sure

  800. about ourselves

  801. or God

  802. sees us

  803. differently

  804. to how

  805. we see

  806. ourselves.

  807. When it's

  808. time for

  809. Elizabeth to

  810. have her

  811. baby,

  812. she gave

  813. birth to

  814. a son.

  815. Her

  816. neighbors

  817. and relatives

  818. heard that

  819. the Lord

  820. has shown

  821. her great

  822. mercy and

  823. they shared

  824. her joy.

  825. On the

  826. eighth day,

  827. they came

  828. to circumcise

  829. his crowd

  830. and they

  831. were going

  832. to name

  833. him after

  834. his father

  835. Zechariah.

  836. But his

  837. mother spoke

  838. up and said,

  839. No,

  840. he is to be

  841. called John.

  842. They said

  843. to her,

  844. There is no

  845. one among

  846. your relative

  847. who has

  848. that name.

  849. She

  850. overcome

  851. her shame

  852. and shared

  853. her joy

  854. with others

  855. at the

  856. birth.

  857. But most

  858. importantly,

  859. eight days

  860. after the

  861. birth,

  862. she repeated

  863. what the

  864. angel Gabriel

  865. said,

  866. He is to be

  867. called John.

  868. Means God

  869. is gracious.

  870. I can imagine

  871. Zechariah not

  872. able to speak,

  873. still has

  874. gotten through

  875. to her

  876. about the

  877. significance

  878. and the

  879. meaning of

  880. the birth

  881. of their

  882. son and

  883. the importance

  884. of trust

  885. and obedience

  886. towards the

  887. message of

  888. God.

  889. She can only

  890. rely on

  891. Zechariah

  892. signing God's

  893. message to

  894. her to be

  895. encouraged and

  896. God spoke to

  897. her through

  898. her muted

  899. husband by

  900. signs.

  901. Then they

  902. make signs to

  903. his father to

  904. find out what

  905. he would like

  906. to name the

  907. child.

  908. He asked

  909. for a writing

  910. tablet and to

  911. everyone's

  912. astonishment.

  913. He wrote,

  914. His name

  915. is John.

  916. Immediately,

  917. his mouth was

  918. opened and

  919. his tongue set

  920. free and he

  921. began to speak

  922. and praise

  923. God.

  924. Zechariah had

  925. nine months

  926. to face how

  927. he used to

  928. live his life

  929. and to become

  930. ready to

  931. receive a new

  932. life.

  933. God addressed

  934. his unbelief,

  935. his fear,

  936. his self-reliance.

  937. A self-centered

  938. priest,

  939. a husband of

  940. a barren wife,

  941. become father

  942. of the one

  943. who bring back

  944. many of people

  945. to God and

  946. go on before

  947. the Lord to

  948. make people

  949. ready for

  950. him.

  951. God's words

  952. through the

  953. angel did

  954. come true at

  955. that appointed

  956. time.

  957. Eight days

  958. after a son

  959. was born to

  960. them,

  961. Zechariah wrote

  962. on the

  963. tablet,

  964. his name

  965. is John.

  966. He fulfilled

  967. the proof

  968. that he

  969. asked for.

  970. He became

  971. the answer

  972. to all his

  973. questions about

  974. whether God

  975. can do the

  976. impossible in

  977. using him.

  978. All the

  979. answers to

  980. our questions

  981. about God

  982. is often

  983. found in

  984. the question

  985. and the

  986. questioner.

  987. His name

  988. is John

  989. means God

  990. is gracious.

  991. It is

  992. declared three

  993. times in this

  994. passage,

  995. God is

  996. gracious to

  997. Zechariah and

  998. Elizabeth by

  999. doing the

  1000. impossible to

  1001. give them a

  1002. son at their

  1003. old age.

  1004. God is

  1005. gracious to

  1006. this world

  1007. and his

  1008. people,

  1009. you and

  1010. me,

  1011. by coming

  1012. into this

  1013. world to

  1014. deal with

  1015. the curse

  1016. that humans

  1017. brought on

  1018. themselves.

  1019. Zechariah,

  1020. after following

  1021. God's instruction

  1022. to declare,

  1023. God is

  1024. gracious,

  1025. become a

  1026. prophet himself,

  1027. speaks of

  1028. God's great

  1029. works throughout

  1030. history to

  1031. raise up a

  1032. saviour for

  1033. us, to

  1034. enable us to

  1035. serve him

  1036. without fear

  1037. in holiness

  1038. and righteousness

  1039. before him.

  1040. Zechariah

  1041. means God

  1042. remembers.

  1043. We still

  1044. need Christmas

  1045. because it

  1046. tells us that

  1047. God remembers

  1048. us and

  1049. sees us

  1050. differently.

  1051. God

  1052. enables us

  1053. us to

  1054. serve him

  1055. without

  1056. fear.

  1057. God

  1058. remembers

  1059. his promise

  1060. to his

  1061. people that

  1062. is recorded

  1063. in the

  1064. Bible and

  1065. fulfilled in

  1066. the life of

  1067. Jesus.

  1068. Learning and

  1069. remembering

  1070. God's

  1071. word,

  1072. holding to

  1073. his teaching,

  1074. you will

  1075. know the

  1076. truth and

  1077. be able to

  1078. see what

  1079. God sees

  1080. in you and

  1081. understand how

  1082. God do the

  1083. impossible in

  1084. your life

  1085. through Jesus.

  1086. We still

  1087. need Christmas

  1088. to remind us

  1089. that we

  1090. treat God

  1091. like what

  1092. Zechariah

  1093. is with

  1094. did.

  1095. Unbelieving,

  1096. self-focused

  1097. and ashamed,

  1098. but God

  1099. never see us

  1100. in the same

  1101. way as how

  1102. we see

  1103. ourselves.

  1104. In Zechariah

    Zechariah 2:8

  1105. 2, verse 8,

  1106. it says that

  1107. the God,

  1108. our Father

  1109. in heaven,

  1110. sees us

  1111. as the

  1112. apple of

  1113. his eyes.

  1114. The apple

  1115. of his eyes

  1116. are very

  1117. dear and

  1118. close to

  1119. him.

  1120. God's

  1121. word about

  1122. how he

  1123. is going

  1124. to save

  1125. us and

  1126. this world

  1127. did come

  1128. true at

  1129. the appointed

  1130. time at

  1131. the first

  1132. Christmas and

  1133. continue to

  1134. do so.

  1135. Our

  1136. gracious God

  1137. did the

  1138. impossible by

  1139. turning disgrace

  1140. and shame

  1141. to joy.

  1142. Gracious God

  1143. did the

  1144. impossible,

  1145. changing

  1146. unbelieving

  1147. heart to a

  1148. heart full of

  1149. praise.

  1150. Towards the end

  1151. of chapter 1

  1152. of Luke,

  1153. joy and

  1154. praise is a

  1155. life that God

  1156. intends for us

  1157. to live,

  1158. not unbelieving

  1159. and ashamed

  1160. of ourselves.

  1161. So praise

  1162. be to the

  1163. Lord, the

  1164. God of

  1165. Israel,

  1166. because he

  1167. has come to

  1168. his people

  1169. and redeemed

  1170. them.

  1171. He has

  1172. raised up a

  1173. strong king

  1174. of salvation

  1175. for us in

  1176. the house of

  1177. his servant

  1178. David, as

  1179. he said

  1180. through his

  1181. holy prophets

  1182. of long

  1183. ago.
