  1. corrupt leadership, justice not for the poor, but only for the wealthy.

  2. The culture had left its origins in God's word.

  3. Those who were supposed to be teaching God's word had sold out.

  4. Whatever you wanted to hear, you could hear,

  5. and you could buy it as long as you had enough money.

  6. The middle class, the poor, are being squeezed out.

  7. They were being ripped off.

  8. Their houses, their properties were being stolen.

  9. There was war.

  10. There was fighting from outside and inside,

  11. leaving some to ask,

  12. why won't the leaders do something to help the people that they are in charge to help?

  13. I'm not talking about anything happening in Australia.

  14. I'm not talking about anything happening in the last hundred years.

  15. I'm talking about Micah the prophet's time.

  16. He was around hundreds of years before Jesus was born.

  17. There was a leadership crisis in Judah.

  18. Those in leadership were failing God's people,

  19. and there were devastating consequences.

  20. People were yearning for a good leader.

  21. Someone that wasn't corrupt to lead them.

  22. A leader to stand up in God's strength.

  23. Because leadership always faces corruption because we are sinful people.

  24. It's not just the cry of Micah's generation.

  25. It's actually every period in history, including our own,

  26. that we are people who are heavily influenced by those who lead us.

  27. The reality is Micah's time is not that different to our time.

  28. New South Wales is on fire.

  29. Our interest rates are hurting many people.

  30. People question whether our education system is failing our children.

  31. Housing is hard for the next generation to buy into.

  32. And Sydney is divided into ethnic backgrounds and social preferences.

  33. So sometimes when we look at the leaders around us,

  34. it can lead us to question,

  35. why won't the leaders do something for the people?

  36. People in all levels of leadership are susceptible to accusations of corruption,

  37. infighting, bribery, and being influenced by outside parties.

  38. It makes us yearn for good leadership.

  39. Someone to lead us out of this mess for a leader who can't be bought and corrupted.

  40. Now, in one sense, it can be easy to blame those in leadership at higher levels.

  41. But the reality is that many of us are leaders too,

  42. whether we are parents or older siblings, a boss at work,

  43. even if we are just influential in our friendship group.

  44. Many of us are leaders.

  45. And we can desire to influence and lead in the right way.

  46. Now, you might be thinking,

  47. didn't James just get up after a little Christmas video asking,

  48. why do we still need Christmas?

  49. Isn't this supposed to be a Christmas talk?

  50. But we will see that Jesus is, of course, the leader that we are longing for.

  51. Even though we don't often see Jesus as a leader,

  52. far more often we consider him, at this time of year,

  53. Jesus is the cute little baby.

  54. He's a person.

  55. He's a saviour.

  56. But Christmas is going to help us understand what kind of leader Jesus is

  57. and how important he is.

  58. And we're going to see that as we go through this prophecy from Micah.

  59. So Micah, he was a prophet to God's southern kingdom,

  60. the southern kingdom of Judah.

  61. This is after the time of King David and King Solomon.

  62. In King David and King Solomon's time, Israel was united,

  63. but then it was divided into the north and into the south,

  64. the northern kingdom of Israel, the southern kingdom of Judah.

  65. And the northern kingdom was attacked and enslaved by the Assyrians.

  66. We just saw reference to the Assyrians in the Bible reading.

  67. And during this time, the Assyrians have come down.

  68. They've attacked and enslaved the northern kingdom.

  69. And the southern kingdom is there shaking in their boots.

  70. The king, Hezekiah, at the time, he is worried.

  71. He is not trusting God.

  72. Instead, he decides to find some allies.

  73. He's going to go and find the Egyptians,

  74. find some other armies to bolster,

  75. because Hezekiah, the king of the southern kingdom of Judah,

  76. wasn't trusting that God would protect them.

  77. It wasn't just that the king was fearful and not trusting God,

  78. but the whole fabric of society was being torn apart.

  79. The land of Judah was the promised land.

  80. This is where God's people would be blessed when they followed God,

  81. and when they obeyed him,

  82. when they cared for the widow,

  83. when they looked after the orphan and the oppressed.

  84. And Judah had been richly blessed.

  85. They had grown rich.

  86. And as they grew rich,

  87. it led to a callousness of heart,

  88. to theft and a disregard for God's law.

  89. And so they start to rip each other off.

  90. As the leaders become corrupt,

  91. so too the people.

  92. Instead of working against a commercializing of culture,

  93. they give in,

  94. and they, just like today,

  95. become all about material possessions.

  96. So the fabric of society was being destroyed.

  97. Society that was built on the care and protection of God's people,

  98. people just like them,

  99. it's being destroyed.

  100. They're eating one another.

  101. Compassionate generosity because of God's generosity to this people

  102. who He's saved out of Egypt,

  103. brought into this land,

  104. built them up.

  105. Instead of responding out of compassion and generosity to that,

  106. it just becomes,

  107. I'm the most important.

  108. I've got to build up my little kingdom.

  109. And so the rich get richer,

  110. and the poor get poorer.

  111. It starts with those in leadership,

  112. the prophets,

  113. the priests,

  114. and the rulers.

  115. Let me read from a little earlier in Micah,

  116. from chapter 3, verse 11.

  117. Her leaders judge for a bribe,

  118. her priests teach for a price,

  119. and her prophets tell fortunes for money.

  120. How could a weak or poor person ever get justice,

  121. if justice can be bought?

  122. Priests were teaching people whatever the people wanted to be taught,

  123. whatever they could be bought.

  124. Instead of bringing God's word to people's lives,

  125. and calling them to repent and follow God,

  126. they were taking money,

  127. saying,

  128. don't worry,

  129. everything's fine.

  130. You just carry on with the way you're going,

  131. as long as you keep giving me money.

  132. Everything is all right.

  133. And the prophets,

  134. who were there to call kings to account,

  135. to warn people about their actions,

  136. well,

  137. they've become fortune tellers,

  138. reading crystal balls for dollars.

  139. Can you imagine

  140. that if Steve,

  141. our senior minister's absence,

  142. that we,

  143. the staff team,

  144. became just a little corrupt?

  145. Just a little corrupt.

  146. Can you imagine,

  147. who can I pick on?

  148. I'll pick on Soren.

  149. Thank you, Soren.

  150. Imagine if Soren wanted to come up

  151. and confess a sin to me,

  152. and he wanted to be encouraged that God forgives him,

  153. and he wanted some assistance

  154. and help to change his action,

  155. and I said,

  156. don't worry, brother,

  157. the only change you need is a $50 note.

  158. Pop it in there,

  159. and you know what,

  160. God will deal with it.

  161. Don't worry about that.

  162. Just a little bit of corruption.

  163. Don't do that, by the way.

  164. We'll confess your sin.

  165. That part's okay.

  166. And maybe with Nick,

  167. maybe let's just say Nick,

  168. just became a little,

  169. just a little bit corrupt.

  170. Instead of choosing songs

  171. that enable us as a congregation

  172. to praise God

  173. that are connected with

  174. where we're going in the service

  175. and as a church,

  176. glorifying God,

  177. Nick instead started taking donations

  178. to the Buy Nick a New Guitar scheme.

  179. And you know,

  180. do you know what,

  181. you know,

  182. if you want to choose a song next week,

  183. you can just donate to that scheme.

  184. If you want to choose all four of the songs next week,

  185. well,

  186. there's a bumper donation price for that.

  187. I don't see Nick shaking his head.

  188. Imagine if we just became a little bit corrupt.

  189. That would have devastating consequences.

  190. Those in leadership of the church

  191. who were supposed to know the law

  192. and God became corrupt.

  193. And so it's no wonder

  194. that the people of Israel,

  195. of Judah,

  196. become corrupted by riches too.

  197. From chapter 2, verse 1.

  198. Woe to those who plan iniquity,

  199. to those who plot evil on their beds.

  200. At mornings light,

  201. they carry it out

  202. because it is in their power to do it.

  203. They covet fields

  204. and they seize them

  205. and houses and take them.

  206. They defraud people of their homes.

  207. They rob them of their inheritance.

  208. This is a picture

  209. of the rich getting richer.

  210. They're stealing the middle class

  211. and the poor's things.

  212. They're stealing their houses,

  213. their properties,

  214. their fields,

  215. their inheritance.

  216. Those who have something to survive on,

  217. it is all being taken by the rich.

  218. Those who have power.

  219. This whole nation is yearning

  220. for good leadership.

  221. All those who should be leading,

  222. the prophets,

  223. the priests,

  224. the rulers,

  225. they have all become corrupt.

  226. This is a desperate

  227. and terrible situation.

  228. It needs something drastic to happen.

  229. It's not going to be fixed

  230. with an election,

  231. the king dying,

  232. a new king coming in,

  233. or just a protest.

  234. This needs divine intervention.

  235. As I've read about these leaders

  236. who became corrupt

  237. in Micah's time

  238. and seeing the justice system

  239. which favours those who have money,

  240. to see the rich

  241. who are stealing

  242. from the middle class

  243. and the poor,

  244. I can't help but think

  245. of the situation

  246. in many parts of this world,

  247. including Sydney.

  248. Just like in Judah's time,

  249. we too have a heritage

  250. following the Lord.

  251. But I wonder

  252. if our culture

  253. has chased

  254. commercial

  255. and material gain

  256. and we have fled the Lord.

  257. Into this context,

  258. Micah prophesies.

  259. He calls on the people

  260. to repent

  261. with one of the most famous verses

  262. from Micah,

  263. from chapter 6, verse 8.

  264. He calls on people

  265. to act justly

  266. and to love mercy

  267. and to walk humbly

  268. with your God.

  269. And against those

  270. abuses of leadership,

  271. the kings who have been born

  272. into the riches

  273. who have failed,

  274. he prophesies

  275. about a ruler

  276. who would come.

  277. He prophesies

  278. about a promised leader.

  279. From chapter 5, verse 2.

  280. But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,

  281. though you are small

  282. among the clans of Judah,

  283. out of you

  284. will come for me

  285. one who will be ruler

  286. over Israel,

  287. whose origins

  288. are from of old,

  289. from ancient times.

  290. Okay,

  291. now it starts

  292. sounding like

  293. a Christmas talk.

  294. We get a word

  295. of Bethlehem.

  296. That sounds familiar.

  297. The new leader

  298. would come from Bethlehem.

  299. It's obviously Jesus.

  300. Many people

  301. have heard of Bethlehem.

  302. What do we think

  303. when we think

  304. of the town of Bethlehem?

  305. Give me some words.

  306. Little, thank you.

  307. Oh, little town of Bethlehem.

  308. What else do we think

  309. about the town of Bethlehem?

  310. Manger.

  311. Sorry, what was the other one?

  312. Manger?

  313. Did three people

  314. just say manger

  315. at the same time?

  316. Manger.

  317. Okay, manger is the food trough

  318. of the animal

  319. that Jesus was placed in.

  320. What else do we think

  321. about Bethlehem?

  322. Yeah, Jesus' birth, sorry.

  323. Shepherds.

  324. Busy.

  325. Busy.

  326. Yep, yeah, it's very busy.

  327. So when the census was taken,

  328. Bethlehem is full of people.

  329. And so we have a picture

  330. of what Bethlehem is.

  331. You know, next week

  332. we'll see a bit more

  333. about Bethlehem.

  334. Come up four o'clock

  335. for our Christmas carols

  336. to find out more

  337. about what happens

  338. in Bethlehem.

  339. But we know the story

  340. of Bethlehem.

  341. We know the nativity scene.

  342. We drive past it.

  343. It's on people's houses

  344. if you've been

  345. Christmas-like looking.

  346. But the people

  347. of Micah's time

  348. didn't really know

  349. anything about Bethlehem.

  350. This is not a picture

  351. that Micah is presenting.

  352. Bethlehem was

  353. a little-known town.

  354. It's not even mentioned

  355. in the book of Joshua

  356. where he lists

  357. all of the towns.

  358. It's not even in the list

  359. of the towns.

  360. This is an unimportant

  361. backwater town

  362. that had little significance.

  363. Even Micah says

  364. that they are small

  365. among the clans of Judah.

  366. But out of this

  367. insignificant,

  368. know-nothing town

  369. would come a ruler.

  370. Not born into riches

  371. like the rest

  372. of Israel's rulers.

  373. He would come

  374. in humility.

  375. And we get this

  376. really interesting phrase.

  377. Whose origins

  378. are from of old.

  379. From ancient times.

  380. This is a really

  381. interesting phrase.

  382. It has connections

  383. with the historic kings.

  384. So it has connections

  385. with King David

  386. who was from Bethlehem.

  387. But it's also used

  388. elsewhere in the Bible

  389. to describe God himself

  390. as God who was

  391. from ancient times

  392. as in from everlasting.

  393. And so Micah

  394. could be alluding

  395. to the fact that

  396. this expected ruler

  397. is going to be

  398. a supernatural leader.

  399. That that is what

  400. is needed

  401. into this corrupt

  402. and desperate time.

  403. God himself

  404. to come and lead.

  405. Micah continues

  406. to describe

  407. what this ruler

  408. looks like

  409. in verse 4.

  410. He will stand

  411. and shepherd his flock

  412. in the strength

  413. of the Lord

  414. in the majesty

  415. of the name

  416. of the Lord his God.

  417. Again,

  418. like King David

  419. he would come

  420. and be a shepherd

  421. for the people.

  422. Strong and fit

  423. unflinching

  424. in leadership

  425. against all of those

  426. who would come

  427. and attack him.

  428. He would stand

  429. under every pressure

  430. and peril.

  431. He will be resolute

  432. making sure that

  433. God's people

  434. aren't fleeced again

  435. but fed.

  436. Cared for

  437. not caged.

  438. And he is fully devoted

  439. to following the Lord.

  440. Verse 4 again

  441. the second half.

  442. And they will live securely

  443. for then his greatness

  444. will reach

  445. to the ends

  446. of the earth.

  447. Under this leader

  448. God's people

  449. will live securely.

  450. Security is not found

  451. in money

  452. or technology

  453. or status.

  454. It's found

  455. trusting in the shepherd

  456. who guides

  457. his sheep.

  458. And his territory

  459. is not just going

  460. to be Israel.

  461. It's not going

  462. to be just

  463. the Middle East.

  464. It is going

  465. to go to the ends

  466. of the earth.

  467. Again,

  468. this is lifting

  469. people's eyes

  470. to a ruler

  471. not just being

  472. the ruler

  473. of Israel

  474. but a supernatural

  475. leader

  476. of the whole world.

  477. And Micah

  478. describes this ruler

  479. as that he would

  480. be our peace.

  481. It's not that he

  482. would bring peace

  483. but that he

  484. embodies peace.

  485. He is

  486. peace

  487. himself.

  488. Micah has

  489. complete confidence

  490. for the future

  491. that when this

  492. ruler comes

  493. all will be well.

  494. When this leader

  495. is in charge

  496. God's people

  497. will find

  498. a new unity.

  499. They will go

  500. from infighting

  501. and corruption

  502. and theft

  503. and bribery

  504. to peace

  505. and security.

  506. Micah

  507. builds up

  508. such an

  509. awesome picture

  510. of this coming

  511. king.

  512. He would be

  513. Davidic

  514. as in he would

  515. be like King

  516. David.

  517. He would care

  518. and protect

  519. and lead

  520. and rule

  521. in purity

  522. in God's

  523. majesty

  524. with God.

  525. This is a

  526. very different

  527. picture

  528. of the leaders

  529. that they had.

  530. A different

  531. humble

  532. king.

  533. People are

  534. yearning for

  535. that.

  536. I think

  537. this is one

  538. of the main

  539. reasons why

  540. Donald Trump

  541. was elected

  542. president.

  543. Now I'm

  544. sure that

  545. there are

  546. many people

  547. here who

  548. are far

  549. more into

  550. politics than

  551. me and

  552. know far

  553. more about

  554. this topic

  555. than me

  556. but it

  557. seems to

  558. me that

  559. one of

  560. the reasons

  561. why Trump

  562. was elected

  563. president

  564. because he

  565. was so

  566. different

  567. and he

  568. certainly

  569. is a

  570. different

  571. person

  572. but he

  573. appealed

  574. to the

  575. working

  576. class

  577. who felt

  578. downtrodden.

  579. He saw

  580. that the

  581. leadership

  582. of the

  583. United

  584. States

  585. was corrupt

  586. and so

  587. when he

  588. came

  589. Trump

  590. was promising

  591. that he

  592. would get

  593. rid of

  594. corruption

  595. and that

  596. he would

  597. make

  598. America

  599. great

  600. again.

  601. No

  602. wonder this

  603. was appealing

  604. to so many

  605. people.

  606. People who

  607. see corruption

  608. in leadership

  609. somebody comes

  610. along and

  611. says you're

  612. going to

  613. get rid of

  614. the corruption

  615. yes I'm

  616. for that

  617. you're going

  618. to make

  619. this country

  620. great well

  621. I've always

  622. wanted this

  623. country yes

  624. let's do

  625. that.

  626. But Trump

  627. is only a

  628. man a

  629. very sinful

  630. man whether

  631. or not he

  632. makes America

  633. great time

  634. will tell but

  635. even if he

  636. does it's

  637. only for a

  638. short period

  639. of time.

  640. In Micah's

  641. time and in

  642. our time we

  643. need more

  644. than just a

  645. strong leader

  646. we need

  647. a good

  648. leader.

  649. And this

  650. is who

  651. Jesus is.

  652. He is the

  653. leader who

  654. came to

  655. not just

  656. make one

  657. country great

  658. he came to

  659. make the

  660. world right

  661. again.

  662. This is why

  663. we need

  664. Christmas because

  665. it shows us

  666. what kind of

  667. leader Jesus

  668. is.

  669. Three things

  670. three characteristics

  671. that this

  672. part of

  673. Micah helps

  674. us to

  675. understand who

  676. Jesus is.

  677. Three things

  678. that he is

  679. humble that he

  680. works from God's

  681. strength and that

  682. he knows our

  683. situation.

  684. Firstly he is

  685. humble.

  686. He doesn't come

  687. like these

  688. expected kings.

  689. He doesn't come

  690. to riches he

  691. comes humbly.

  692. He's born in

  693. that backwater

  694. little town of

  695. Bethlehem.

  696. He's born yes

  697. from the line of

  698. kings but he is

  699. from ancient

  700. times.

  701. He is from

  702. God's line.

  703. He who is

  704. eternal has

  705. been made

  706. temporary.

  707. He is in a

  708. physical body

  709. bound by

  710. time.

  711. And so Jesus

  712. comes in

  713. humility.

  714. He didn't

  715. come to

  716. take, to

  717. rule, to

  718. rule and

  719. then fleece

  720. his own

  721. pockets.

  722. He came,

  723. he didn't

  724. come to steal

  725. and take, he

  726. came to obey

  727. God.

  728. And to

  729. become the

  730. king of the

  731. world but

  732. only by obeying

  733. God through his

  734. death and

  735. resurrection.

  736. Jesus knows

  737. who he is, he

  738. knows his

  739. place and

  740. unlike many

  741. other leaders

  742. he's not

  743. grasping for

  744. more and

  745. more power.

  746. He knows

  747. that God

  748. will give

  749. him power

  750. at the

  751. right time.

  752. So Jesus

  753. comes in

  754. humility.

  755. Second,

  756. the second

  757. person of

  758. the Trinity

  759. doesn't come

  760. with all the

  761. pomp and

  762. ceremony of

  763. any other

  764. ruler.

  765. You know

  766. whenever a

  767. foreign

  768. dignitary comes

  769. to a

  770. country, how

  771. much security

  772. and effort

  773. there is that

  774. goes into

  775. making sure

  776. their arrival

  777. is just

  778. right.

  779. I really,

  780. for some

  781. reason,

  782. really enjoy

  783. the royals at

  784. the moment.

  785. Prince Harry,

  786. the whole,

  787. his marriage,

  788. I really enjoy

  789. that.

  790. But that is so

  791. much pomp and

  792. ceremony.

  793. Jesus doesn't

  794. come like

  795. that.

  796. He comes

  797. to a

  798. place that

  799. he would

  800. rule as

  801. a weak

  802. little baby

  803. whose parents

  804. were a

  805. tradie and

  806. an unmarried

  807. teenager.

  808. He is

  809. dependent upon

  810. God's power

  811. and as Micah

  812. prophesied, he

  813. would lead and

  814. shepherd us in

  815. God's strength

  816. and not his

  817. own.

  818. And because he

  819. is trusting in

  820. somebody else's

  821. strength, not

  822. his own,

  823. Jesus is

  824. totally

  825. incorruptible.

  826. He never

  827. sinned, he

  828. couldn't be

  829. bought, he

  830. couldn't be

  831. bribed, he

  832. didn't give in

  833. to sexual

  834. temptation when

  835. offered.

  836. Jesus doesn't

  837. lead to get

  838. rich and to

  839. give in to

  840. those who

  841. could bribe

  842. him.

  843. Jesus leads

  844. in God's

  845. strength and

  846. it just gives

  847. him this

  848. wonderful ability

  849. to be

  850. incorruptible

  851. and be the

  852. leader who

  853. we need.

  854. And finally,

  855. Jesus knows

  856. what our

  857. situation is

  858. like.

  859. He actually

  860. came and

  861. dwelt as a

  862. person.

  863. He knows

  864. our situation.

  865. He came as

  866. a human to

  867. save, to

  868. redeem and

  869. lead us.

  870. He can

  871. empathise with

  872. us with our

  873. pain and our

  874. problems.

  875. He is not a

  876. leader who was

  877. born with a

  878. silver spoon in

  879. his mouth.

  880. He was not

  881. sent to the

  882. best schools.

  883. He was not

  884. on a fast

  885. track to

  886. political high

  887. places.

  888. He was born

  889. in humility

  890. and he

  891. was lifted

  892. high in

  893. his death

  894. on the

  895. cross.

  896. Have you

  897. ever seen

  898. the television

  899. show

  900. Undercover

  901. Boss?

  902. This is a

  903. series of

  904. TV shows

  905. where they

  906. take someone

  907. very high in

  908. an organisation

  909. and they put

  910. them down

  911. working at

  912. KFC,

  913. working drive

  914. through,

  915. and it's

  916. often eye

  917. opening for

  918. the boss

  919. because they

  920. go,

  921. oh, I

  922. didn't really

  923. know the

  924. plight of

  925. my people,

  926. I didn't

  927. really know

  928. how hard

  929. it was to

  930. do this

  931. job,

  932. I didn't

  933. realise what

  934. a terrible

  935. boss I

  936. was,

  937. you know,

  938. I really

  939. like this

  940. show,

  941. often the

  942. bosses become

  943. better and

  944. they get to

  945. help their

  946. people.

  947. Christmas

  948. reminds us

  949. that Jesus

  950. is not a

  951. distant leader

  952. who is ruling

  953. in some

  954. CEO of some

  955. high tower

  956. off in some

  957. business park.

  958. Jesus is not

  959. a ruler who

  960. is ruling

  961. from far

  962. away who

  963. does not

  964. know what

  965. it's like.

  966. He knows

  967. our issues

  968. intimately.

  969. Unlike

  970. Trump,

  971. Jesus has

  972. fulfilled the

  973. promise to

  974. make the

  975. world great

  976. again,

  977. to make it

  978. right again.

  979. Not by

  980. making himself

  981. look great,

  982. but by his

  983. death and

  984. resurrection.

  985. He has

  986. ascended to

  987. the throne

  988. above all

  989. thrones.

  990. He has

  991. brought us

  992. back into

  993. relationship

  994. with God.

  995. Jesus is

  996. the only one

  997. that can be

  998. trusted to

  999. rule.

  1000. He's not

  1001. able to

  1002. be bought,

  1003. bribed,

  1004. or beaten.

  1005. He has

  1006. triumphed and

  1007. in his

  1008. victory he

  1009. leads us

  1010. and he

  1011. feeds us.

  1012. And he

  1013. is now in

  1014. control of

  1015. the world.

  1016. So how do

  1017. we respond

  1018. to those

  1019. in leadership?

  1020. Much like

  1021. Micah, we

  1022. can call

  1023. them to

  1024. account for

  1025. their behavior

  1026. and call

  1027. them to

  1028. model their

  1029. leadership on

  1030. something

  1031. greater.

  1032. for Micah

  1033. himself, he

  1034. called the

  1035. leaders to

  1036. repent and

  1037. to turn

  1038. back.

  1039. And for

  1040. Hezekiah, the

  1041. king of

  1042. Judah, Hezekiah

  1043. did repent.

  1044. He did

  1045. not go with

  1046. those armies

  1047. that he

  1048. initially decided

  1049. to go with.

  1050. He trusted in

  1051. God.

  1052. And Judah

  1053. was saved.

  1054. Assyria did

  1055. not get through

  1056. the gates into

  1057. Jerusalem.

  1058. But it was

  1059. only temporary.

  1060. Other leaders

  1061. would come and

  1062. they failed.

  1063. But we

  1064. can be

  1065. calling our

  1066. leaders to

  1067. account.

  1068. We should be

  1069. following Paul's

  1070. advice to his

  1071. protege, Timothy.

  1072. In 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  1073. chapter 2, he

  1074. calls Timothy

  1075. to do this

  1076. very thing.

  1077. He says,

  1078. I urge then,

  1079. first of all,

  1080. that petitions,

  1081. prayers,

  1082. intercession,

  1083. and thanksgiving

  1084. be made for

  1085. all people.

  1086. for kings

  1087. and all

  1088. those in

  1089. authority,

  1090. that we

  1091. may live

  1092. peaceful and

  1093. quiet lives

  1094. in all

  1095. godliness

  1096. and holiness.

  1097. So just

  1098. like Micah,

  1099. we should be

  1100. praying for

  1101. those in

  1102. leadership.

  1103. Because leaders

  1104. do have a

  1105. great influence

  1106. on us and

  1107. on the

  1108. direction of

  1109. our country.

  1110. Be praying

  1111. for Australia.

  1112. Be praying

  1113. for what is

  1114. happening more

  1115. broadly in the

  1116. world and for

  1117. our leaders here

  1118. at church.

  1119. For me,

  1120. I find it

  1121. very easy

  1122. to ignore

  1123. what is

  1124. happening in

  1125. politics in

  1126. Australia.

  1127. I'm not sure

  1128. if you enjoy

  1129. Australian

  1130. politics,

  1131. but I find

  1132. it easy to

  1133. just ignore

  1134. it.

  1135. But let me

  1136. encourage you

  1137. not to do

  1138. that.

  1139. Let me

  1140. encourage you

  1141. to contact

  1142. your local

  1143. member,

  1144. to contact

  1145. your ministers

  1146. of parliament,

  1147. to implore

  1148. them to see

  1149. justice done,

  1150. and to get

  1151. rid of

  1152. corruption.

  1153. Scott Morrison,

  1154. our Prime

  1155. Minister,

  1156. came out

  1157. this week

  1158. and said

  1159. that he

  1160. wanted

  1161. Australia to

  1162. be leaders

  1163. in technology

  1164. and security.

  1165. And I think

  1166. that's great.

  1167. I think that's

  1168. a wonderful

  1169. thing.

  1170. I think it's

  1171. a good thing

  1172. to want to be

  1173. leaders in

  1174. the world

  1175. like that.

  1176. But I would

  1177. love if Scott

  1178. Morrison came

  1179. out and said,

  1180. we want to be

  1181. leaders in the

  1182. world of

  1183. compassion.

  1184. we want to

  1185. figure out

  1186. how to

  1187. care for

  1188. our refugees

  1189. in a loving

  1190. and generous

  1191. way.

  1192. Wouldn't it

  1193. be great

  1194. if our

  1195. leaders were

  1196. doing that?

  1197. Let me

  1198. encourage you

  1199. to be

  1200. praying for

  1201. them.

  1202. Contact

  1203. them and

  1204. tell them

  1205. that you're

  1206. praying for

  1207. them.

  1208. Scott Morrison

  1209. is a

  1210. Christian and

  1211. I believe

  1212. he would

  1213. be very

  1214. encouraged to

  1215. find out

  1216. that you

  1217. were praying

  1218. for him.

  1219. Looking more

  1220. broadly across

  1221. the world,

  1222. we see the

  1223. situation in

  1224. Hong Kong.

  1225. It is a

  1226. terrible

  1227. situation at

  1228. the moment.

  1229. I'm not

  1230. sure if

  1231. you're

  1232. across it

  1233. but there

  1234. are large

  1235. protests going

  1236. on and it

  1237. seems to be

  1238. at a

  1239. deadlock.

  1240. Regardless of

  1241. whether you

  1242. are for

  1243. those who

  1244. are protesting

  1245. or whether

  1246. you are

  1247. against those

  1248. who are

  1249. protesting,

  1250. this is a

  1251. painful situation

  1252. that is not

  1253. going to be

  1254. fixed very

  1255. easily.

  1256. Every day

  1257. it goes on,

  1258. it seems to

  1259. be deteriorating

  1260. further.

  1261. I don't know

  1262. what the leaders

  1263. of either side

  1264. are like,

  1265. I don't

  1266. know whether

  1267. they're corrupt,

  1268. I have no

  1269. knowledge of

  1270. it, but I

  1271. also don't

  1272. have any

  1273. idea how

  1274. it can be

  1275. reconciled.

  1276. As Paul

  1277. reminds us

  1278. in his

  1279. letter to

  1280. Timothy,

  1281. we should

  1282. be praying

  1283. that God

  1284. would intercede

  1285. on behalf

  1286. of these

  1287. leaders.

  1288. So pray

  1289. for the

  1290. government in

  1291. Hong Kong

  1292. and in

  1293. China.

  1294. Pray for

  1295. those who

  1296. are leading

  1297. the protests.

  1298. even what's

  1299. happening in

  1300. Europe at

  1301. the moment,

  1302. I'm not

  1303. sure if

  1304. you're across

  1305. the Brexit

  1306. deal,

  1307. it seems

  1308. there is

  1309. just instability

  1310. in large

  1311. parts of our

  1312. world at the

  1313. moment.

  1314. Be praying

  1315. for them.

  1316. For us

  1317. locally here

  1318. as a church,

  1319. Steve, our

  1320. senior minister,

  1321. is on a

  1322. sabbatical at

  1323. the moment.

  1324. He has

  1325. taken some

  1326. time out

  1327. of his

  1328. normal work

  1329. to work

  1330. on his

  1331. spiritual,

  1332. mental,

  1333. and physical

  1334. health.

  1335. And for us

  1336. as a church,

  1337. it is so

  1338. important that

  1339. he is a

  1340. leader who

  1341. is spiritually

  1342. well, so

  1343. that he does

  1344. not become

  1345. like the

  1346. leaders in

  1347. Micah's time,

  1348. so that he

  1349. is not trusting

  1350. in his

  1351. strength but

  1352. in God's

  1353. strength.

  1354. When situations

  1355. are desperate,

  1356. when political

  1357. leaders fail,

  1358. it is a

  1359. painful reminder

  1360. of why Jesus

  1361. is so

  1362. necessary.

  1363. He is the

  1364. leader who

  1365. is incorruptible,

  1366. who can't

  1367. be bribed,

  1368. bought,

  1369. or beaten.

  1370. And he

  1371. is powerful.

  1372. So we

  1373. shouldn't put

  1374. an unnecessary

  1375. amount of

  1376. trust in the

  1377. leaders of

  1378. this world.

  1379. They will

  1380. come and

  1381. go, they

  1382. will do

  1383. good things

  1384. and bad,

  1385. our political

  1386. leaders will

  1387. put in new

  1388. taxes and

  1389. they will

  1390. cut taxes,

  1391. but Jesus

  1392. is the only

  1393. one who

  1394. has climbed

  1395. to the top

  1396. of the

  1397. leadership

  1398. ladder by

  1399. obeying

  1400. God

  1401. perfectly

  1402. and dying

  1403. for us.

  1404. He paid

  1405. the cost

  1406. of our

  1407. sin and

  1408. our shame

  1409. and he

  1410. now sits

  1411. above every

  1412. throne and

  1413. he will

  1414. return in

  1415. glory.

  1416. Christmas

  1417. reminds us

  1418. of the kind

  1419. of leader

  1420. that Israel

  1421. is desperate

  1422. for.

  1423. It reminds

  1424. us of the

  1425. leader that

  1426. we are still

  1427. yearning for.

  1428. No one is

  1429. able to care

  1430. and to

  1431. lead and

  1432. to guide

  1433. us like

  1434. Jesus

  1435. is.

  1436. So when

  1437. we put

  1438. our trust

  1439. in him,

  1440. we will

  1441. not be

  1442. let down.

  1443. Let me

  1444. pray for

  1445. us.

  1446. We will

  1447. Thank you.
