  1. Once upon a time, there was a young lady due to be married to the handsome woodworker.

  2. They were about to journey to a distant land when Mary's angel godfather, Gabriel, came down and said,

  3. Good news, you will bear a prince.

  4. Joseph the woodworker and Mary set off to their distant hometown of Bethlehem

  5. because the evil Romans had called a census.

  6. And so everyone had to go to their hometown.

  7. When they arrived, the town was full.

  8. Not even people's guest rooms were free.

  9. And Mary gave birth to the prince Jesus.

  10. And they lay him in a manger with all the other talking and singing animals.

  11. The shepherds, Bozo, Fopso and Greg, came to visit.

  12. And the mysterious Magi came and gave gifts.

  13. And everyone learnt a good lesson about love and sharing.

  14. And that's the end of the story.

  15. At least, that's how Christmas can seem.

  16. It can seem like it's just a fairy tale.

  17. And we all know that story.

  18. And we all have a smile.

  19. And it's all a bit lovely.

  20. Because we do love a good fairy tale.

  21. It seems our movies and TV shows are all full of fairy tales.

  22. We read fairy tales to our kids.

  23. We read them in our books.

  24. And Christmas can often look like a fairy tale.

  25. You know, that story I told a moment ago,

  26. it's mostly the story of Christmas.

  27. But what do we lose when Christmas is just a fairy tale?

  28. What happens when we cut it out of the historical origins?

  29. And what happens when we forget how amazing it is?

  30. And forget the enormity that God became human?

  31. So today, as we look at the old, old story of Christmas,

  32. we're going to put that story back into its historical context.

  33. And we're going to see how this story is part of the bigger picture

  34. of God's story for salvation.

  35. Please have your Bibles open.

  36. We're a church who loves to read God's Word.

  37. We're in the part of the Bible called Luke.

  38. And we're in chapter 2 at the start.

  39. If you need a Bible, just pop your hand up.

  40. And one of our people in red vests would love to get you one.

  41. If not, it'll be on the screen.

  42. Luke chapter 2 from verse 1.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  43. At the start of Luke's telling of the birth of Jesus,

  44. he grounds it in history.

  45. In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a decree

  46. that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.

  47. This was the first census that took place

  48. while Quirinius was governor of Syria.

  49. And everyone went to their own town to register.

  50. Caesar Augustus...

  51. I keep saying Augustus like...

  52. He's from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

  53. Augustus Gloop.

  54. Should it be Augustus?

  55. Yeah, thank you.

  56. Is anybody particularly good in their Roman history?

  57. Yes?

  58. Some people?

  59. Okay, thank you.

  60. You can correct me.

  61. Augustus?

  62. Does that feel a little bit better?

  63. Yeah, sorry.

  64. Caesar Augustus.

  65. He was actually called Octavian.

  66. He was the son of Julius Caesar's nephew.

  67. And he became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire

  68. after he defeated Antony and Cleopatra.

  69. And then he was given the title Augustus,

  70. which means holy or majestic.

  71. He was the first of the emperors

  72. to really encourage people to worship him as God.

  73. They had this cult of the emperor

  74. where they would encourage people to see them as God.

  75. And there was this fantastical story that went around

  76. that he was miraculously conceived by a serpent.

  77. And there's actually an inscription in the British Museum

  78. from this time that says about Augustus,

  79. it says,

  80. He is God, the Son of God and Saviour,

  81. bringer of peace and hope and good news.

  82. Now this was all happening around five years,

  83. five to ten years before Jesus was born.

  84. And this was spread around about Octavius,

  85. about Caesar Augustus,

  86. as good news.

  87. This was the gospel that went around.

  88. That he is the Son of God and Saviour,

  89. the bringer of peace and hope and good news.

  90. And you know, if you were the emperor,

  91. you'd really want people to believe this.

  92. You know, you'd spread this around.

  93. Yes, this gives me a mandate from heaven

  94. to be in charge because I'm the Son of God.

  95. I've taken over.

  96. I'm in control.

  97. Don't fight with me.

  98. And at the very start of the story of Jesus,

  99. it is no mistake that Luke reminds us

  100. of who is in charge.

  101. This man who had been going around,

  102. spreading this fairy tale,

  103. that he was the Son of God,

  104. the Saviour, the bringer of peace and hope and good news.

  105. And so while there's this story being spread around,

  106. Luke is going to tell God's story of salvation,

  107. which is no made up fairy tale.

  108. And Luke brings a contrast between Augustus and a baby,

  109. one who calls himself the Son of God

  110. and one who will be called the Son of God by God himself.

  111. And we'll see this contrast in a moment with the angel's message.

  112. Joseph and his fiancée Mary,

  113. they've headed to Bethlehem because of Augustus' census,

  114. and they give birth after they arrive.

  115. But there's no guest room,

  116. so they place their baby Jesus into a manger.

  117. And an angel brings good news of a Saviour.

  118. Not Augustuses,

  119. not a military Saviour,

  120. but a true Saviour.

  121. When we see angels in the Bible,

  122. it often conjures up images,

  123. well it does for me at least,

  124. conjures up images of big fluffy wings,

  125. halos.

  126. Angels are often described as bright,

  127. very shiny,

  128. but angel just means messenger.

  129. And so when they come,

  130. they're delivering a message.

  131. And here they have a message from God,

  132. a message to counter the ruler

  133. who set himself up with his own fairy tale

  134. as the God and Saviour.

  135. The angel speaks in verse 9.

  136. An angel of the Lord appeared to them,

  137. and the glory of the Lord shone around them,

  138. and they were terrified.

  139. But the angel said,

  140. do not be afraid.

  141. I bring you good news

  142. that will cause great joy for all people.

  143. Today in the town of David,

  144. a Saviour has been born to you.

  145. He is the Messiah, the Lord.

  146. This will be a sign to you.

  147. You will find a baby wrapped in cloths

  148. and lying in a manger.

  149. A Saviour.

  150. The one and true Saviour has been born.

  151. He is the Messiah,

  152. which means,

  153. Messiah means that he is chosen.

  154. So it's not some upstart son of God,

  155. Saviour.

  156. It is God's chosen Saviour.

  157. Wrapped and placed in a manger.

  158. It is this beautiful contradiction.

  159. The highest position,

  160. God, the son of God,

  161. placed in a manger

  162. where animals would be eating their food.

  163. This is God's story of salvation.

  164. That salvation will come to a people

  165. who are desperate to be saved.

  166. God's story of salvation

  167. is written in a way

  168. that no fairy tale would be written.

  169. Yes, there is a miraculous birth

  170. to an unlikely mother

  171. born in a town of

  172. little to no importance or significance.

  173. The good news sent by God

  174. does not go to those

  175. who can write songs about it.

  176. It doesn't go to the ballads of the time

  177. to sing songs and spread it around.

  178. The good news doesn't go to those

  179. who have the fastest horses

  180. to spread the good news around.

  181. The good news doesn't go to royalty.

  182. God sends his messengers,

  183. the angels,

  184. to some shepherds

  185. on a hill

  186. in the middle of the night.

  187. Shepherds were disliked,

  188. dirty,

  189. despised,

  190. people of questionable taste

  191. and character.

  192. And they get visited

  193. by an angel

  194. and then a whole army

  195. of angels.

  196. As unlikely as the birth is,

  197. the story continues.

  198. The shepherds hear the angels

  199. and they decide to go

  200. and visit this baby.

  201. And so they visit

  202. and then after that

  203. they are so joyous and excited

  204. they continue to praise God

  205. and spread the good news.

  206. The good news about this saviour

  207. has come to even

  208. the lowliest of low.

  209. Even these despised shepherds

  210. have a place before God.

  211. Even they have a role

  212. to play in his kingdom.

  213. God's story of salvation

  214. continues after Jesus' birth

  215. in ways that we again

  216. would not write it.

  217. the great God-man Jesus.

  218. He never disobeys his father

  219. and yet

  220. he's ridiculed,

  221. he is murdered,

  222. he is shamed

  223. before all people on a cross.

  224. His best friends flee

  225. and hide.

  226. This salvation does not look

  227. like a mighty Caesar's

  228. salvation or victory.

  229. It's not a triumphant tale

  230. that we would tell

  231. but it's Jesus' triumph.

  232. It's God's story of salvation

  233. shown in weakness.

  234. His salvation is not a battle

  235. won by a man

  236. but by a man

  237. humbly led to a tree.

  238. This man was raised

  239. three days later

  240. but again,

  241. if this was me

  242. I would probably appear

  243. to my enemies

  244. and gloat

  245. I'd be like

  246. ha ha

  247. you tried to kill me

  248. it didn't work

  249. and here I am to smite you

  250. but Jesus doesn't do that.

  251. His victory

  252. isn't over

  253. Pilate the governor

  254. it isn't over

  255. earthly powers

  256. it is over

  257. sin

  258. and death.

  259. This is not a story

  260. that we would write

  261. but this is how

  262. the God of the universe

  263. would intervene

  264. and save his people.

  265. The good news

  266. is proclaimed

  267. one quiet night

  268. to shepherds

  269. about a boy

  270. that was born

  271. who is our saviour.

  272. Now at this point

  273. we could leave it there

  274. we could think

  275. oh that's

  276. that's a great story

  277. sure

  278. it's more than a fairy tale

  279. it's history

  280. it's truth

  281. the angels came

  282. and told truth

  283. it's really interesting

  284. I'm happy to come

  285. and hear about it

  286. once a year

  287. but

  288. why care?

  289. maybe it's just

  290. a 2000 year old

  291. truth

  292. and that's

  293. all it needs to be

  294. it is

  295. God's

  296. good news

  297. to us today

  298. because it's not

  299. just an old

  300. story of God's

  301. it is a story

  302. that continues

  303. and he invites

  304. us to be part

  305. of his story

  306. this is still

  307. our story

  308. and we need

  309. this story

  310. of God's salvation

  311. yes a lot

  312. has changed

  313. in 2000 years

  314. technology

  315. has changed

  316. life expectancy

  317. has changed

  318. the quality

  319. of food

  320. and housing

  321. and education

  322. has changed

  323. but who we are

  324. at our core

  325. is still the same

  326. people desperate

  327. for a saviour

  328. we've become

  329. more advanced

  330. but we're still

  331. fighting wars

  332. wars against

  333. other countries

  334. wars against

  335. other ethnicities

  336. wars within

  337. our own families

  338. each of us

  339. writing our

  340. own story

  341. of what we

  342. want to save

  343. us

  344. we want to be

  345. in control

  346. of our story

  347. and have our

  348. own version

  349. of our saviour

  350. I wonder

  351. if you were

  352. going to

  353. write a story

  354. today

  355. you know

  356. later on today

  357. you get

  358. a little bit

  359. full

  360. a little bit

  361. sick of

  362. spending time

  363. with your

  364. family

  365. and you were

  366. going to

  367. write a fairy

  368. tale

  369. with yourself

  370. in the middle

  371. what would

  372. your character

  373. be

  374. what kind

  375. of fairy

  376. tale

  377. character

  378. would you

  379. be

  380. would you

  381. be

  382. the strong

  383. warrior

  384. ready to

  385. fight and

  386. save your

  387. people

  388. would you

  389. be the

  390. princess

  391. in the

  392. high castle

  393. waiting for

  394. someone to

  395. come and

  396. save you

  397. would you

  398. be the

  399. person in

  400. charge of

  401. everything

  402. maybe you

  403. feel that

  404. way

  405. you've got

  406. Christmas

  407. lunch coming

  408. up and

  409. you know

  410. it has to

  411. be particular

  412. you have

  413. to have

  414. everybody

  415. in the

  416. right

  417. spots

  418. in the

  419. kitchen

  420. doing

  421. the

  422. right

  423. thing

  424. you have

  425. to be

  426. that

  427. person

  428. in

  429. charge

  430. but

  431. these

  432. are all

  433. in a

  434. sense

  435. wish

  436. fulfillment

  437. we want

  438. to have

  439. value

  440. and we

  441. want

  442. someone to

  443. care enough

  444. for us

  445. that they

  446. come and

  447. slay a

  448. dragon

  449. we wish

  450. we had

  451. enough

  452. power

  453. to influence

  454. a country

  455. we want

  456. to write

  457. our own

  458. fairy tales

  459. with us

  460. as the

  461. hero

  462. but

  463. when we

  464. do that

  465. we're

  466. pretty much

  467. the same

  468. as

  469. Caesar

  470. Augustus

  471. who

  472. wrote

  473. our

  474. story

  475. has

  476. already

  477. been

  478. written

  479. and

  480. it

  481. is

  482. part

  483. of

  484. God's

  485. biggest

  486. story

  487. God's

  488. story

  489. of

  490. salvation

  491. is not

  492. written

  493. the way

  494. that we

  495. would

  496. write

  497. it

  498. but we

  499. need

  500. this

  501. Christmas

  502. and each

  503. Christmas

  504. to remind

  505. us

  506. that we

  507. are the

  508. ones

  509. who need

  510. to be

  511. saved

  512. saved

  513. from

  514. making

  515. life

  516. all

  517. about

  518. us

  519. saved

  520. from

  521. sin

  522. and

  523. from

  524. death

  525. in

  526. God's

  527. story

  528. of

  529. salvation

  530. we

  531. are

  532. not

  533. the

  534. hero

  535. we

  536. are

  537. not

  538. the

  539. princess

  540. and the

  541. reality

  542. is we

  543. are

  544. most

  545. like

  546. the

  547. shepherds

  548. dirty

  549. despised

  550. despicable

  551. people

  552. of

  553. questionable

  554. character

  555. because

  556. to

  557. God

  558. we

  559. are

  560. damaged

  561. and

  562. sinful

  563. and

  564. dirty

  565. but

  566. the

  567. angel

  568. came

  569. to

  570. these

  571. shepherds

  572. first

  573. and

  574. he

  575. told

  576. them

  577. the

  578. good

  579. news

  580. that

  581. Jesus

  582. had

  583. been

  584. born

  585. and

  586. they

  587. could

  588. go

  589. and

  590. see

  591. Jesus

  592. himself

  593. and

  594. then

  595. they

  596. went

  597. out

  598. and

  599. told

  600. everybody

  601. and

  602. they

  603. praised

  604. God

  605. we

  606. don't

  607. need

  608. to

  609. build

  610. our

  611. lives

  612. up

  613. into

  614. a

  615. fairy

  616. tale

  617. because

  618. God

  619. already

  620. has

  621. us

  622. in

  623. his

  624. story

  625. like

  626. the

  627. shepherds

  628. God

  629. shares

  630. the

  631. good

  632. news

  633. with

  634. us

  635. he

  636. takes

  637. us

  638. to

  639. see

  640. the

  641. birth

  642. of

  643. Jesus

  644. here

  645. we

  646. are

  647. again

  648. dwelling

  649. and

  650. considering

  651. the

  652. birth

  653. of

  654. Jesus

  655. not

  656. because

  657. we

  658. are

  659. special

  660. or

  661. that

  662. we

  663. are

  664. the

  665. hero

  666. but

  667. because

  668. God

  669. is

  670. special

  671. and

  672. he

  673. is

  674. the

  675. hero

  676. and

  677. he

  678. invites

  679. us

  680. to be

  681. part

  682. of

  683. his

  684. story

  685. I

  686. love

  687. how

  688. the

  689. shepherds

  690. respond

  691. to

  692. meeting

  693. baby

  694. Jesus

  695. in

  696. verse

  697. 17

  698. verse

  699. 17

  700. they

  701. spread

  702. the

  703. word

  704. concerning

  705. what

  706. had

  707. been

  708. told

  709. them

  710. about

  711. this

  712. child

  713. and

  714. all

  715. who

  716. heard

  717. it

  718. were

  719. amazed

  720. at

  721. what

  722. the

  723. shepherds

  724. said

  725. to

  726. them

  727. down

  728. to

  729. verse

  730. 20

  731. the

  732. shepherds

  733. returned

  734. glorifying

  735. and

  736. praising

  737. God

  738. for

  739. all

  740. the

  741. things

  742. they

  743. had

  744. heard

  745. and

  746. seen

  747. the

  748. shepherds

  749. these

  750. lowly

  751. dirty

  752. despised

  753. despicable

  754. people

  755. get

  756. invited

  757. to

  758. be

  759. like

  760. the

  761. angels

  762. the

  763. angels

  764. came

  765. and

  766. shared

  767. God's

  768. message

  769. and

  770. praised

  771. and

  772. sang

  773. about

  774. how

  775. awesome

  776. God

  777. is

  778. and

  779. then

  780. the

  781. shepherds

  782. visit

  783. Jesus

  784. and

  785. then

  786. go

  787. off

  788. and

  789. share

  790. his

  791. message

  792. and

  793. praise

  794. God

  795. they

  796. were

  797. the

  798. lowly

  799. and

  800. they

  801. get

  802. brought

  803. into

  804. God's

  805. story

  806. of

  807. salvation

  808. they

  809. had

  810. the

  811. chance

  812. to

  813. see

  814. it

  815. and

  816. spread

  817. God's

  818. story

  819. with

  820. great

  821. joy

  822. we

  823. are

  824. invited

  825. into

  826. God's

  827. story

  828. of

  829. salvation

  830. just

  831. like

  832. the

  833. shepherds

  834. and

  835. we're

  836. invited

  837. to

  838. share

  839. God's

  840. good

  841. news

  842. with

  843. the

  844. rest

  845. of

  846. the

  847. world

  848. and

  849. we

  850. can

  851. be

  852. praising

  853. God

  854. like

  855. the

  856. shepherds

  857. praising

  858. him

  859. because

  860. he

  861. is

  862. awesome

  863. and

  864. mighty

  865. and

  866. he

  867. has

  868. cared

  869. for

  870. us

  871. who

  872. are

  873. lowly

  874. as

  875. we

  876. speak

  877. of

  878. fairy

  879. tales

  880. at

  881. Christmas

  882. I

  883. couldn't

  884. help

  885. but

  886. remember

  887. the

  888. most

  889. common

  890. fairy

  891. tale

  892. going

  893. around

  894. at

  895. Christmas

  896. time

  897. for the

  898. last

  899. couple

  900. of

  901. years

  902. talking

  903. about

  904. Star

  905. Wars

  906. of

  907. course

  908. I

  909. am

  910. not

  911. sure

  912. if

  913. you

  914. are

  915. Star

  916. Wars

  917. fans

  918. is

  919. anybody

  920. a

  921. Star

  922. Wars

  923. fan

  924. here

  925. yes

  926. well

  927. done

  928. it's

  929. nice

  930. to see

  931. there's

  932. some

  933. wise

  934. people

  935. here

  936. years

  937. ago

  938. when

  939. these

  940. movies

  941. were

  942. being

  943. made

  944. in

  945. Sydney

  946. a

  947. friend

  948. of

  949. mine

  950. had

  951. the

  952. chance

  953. to

  954. go

  955. and

  956. do

  957. work

  958. experience

  959. on

  960. the

  961. set

  962. of

  963. one

  964. of

  965. the

  966. Star

  967. Wars

  968. movies

  969. I

  970. tell

  971. you

  972. what

  973. we

  974. were

  975. stories

  976. that

  977. millions

  978. of

  979. people

  980. have

  981. seen

  982. now

  983. 11

  984. movies

  985. long

  986. he

  987. got

  988. to be

  989. part

  990. he

  991. wasn't

  992. in

  993. the

  994. movie

  995. he

  996. didn't

  997. have

  998. a

  999. cameo

  1000. or

  1001. anything

  1002. he

  1003. was

  1004. just

  1005. there

  1006. when

  1007. it

  1008. was

  1009. being

  1010. made

  1011. he

  1012. got

  1013. to

  1014. be

  1015. part

  1016. of

  1017. that

  1018. amazing

  1019. story

  1020. the

  1021. shepherds

  1022. were

  1023. invited

  1024. to

  1025. come

  1026. and

  1027. to

  1028. see

  1029. Jesus

  1030. to

  1031. be

  1032. part

  1033. of

  1034. something

  1035. bigger

  1036. than

  1037. themselves

  1038. something

  1039. far

  1040. more

  1041. important

  1042. than

  1043. sheep

  1044. and

  1045. God

  1046. invites

  1047. far

  1048. more

  1049. impressive

  1050. and

  1051. more

  1052. life

  1053. changing

  1054. story

  1055. than

  1056. Star

  1057. Wars

  1058. and

  1059. God

  1060. calls

  1061. us

  1062. to

  1063. follow

  1064. this

  1065. baby

  1066. this

  1067. man

  1068. who

  1069. would

  1070. grow

  1071. up

  1072. to

  1073. die

  1074. for

  1075. us

  1076. who

  1077. is

  1078. going

  1079. to

  1080. return

  1081. and

  1082. when

  1083. we

  1084. do

  1085. God

  1086. has

  1087. a

  1088. part

  1089. for

  1090. all

  1091. of

  1092. us

  1093. in

  1094. his

  1095. story

  1096. to

  1097. praise

  1098. God

  1099. which

  1100. we've

  1101. been

  1102. doing

  1103. this

  1104. morning

  1105. in

  1106. song

  1107. to

  1108. reflect

  1109. on

  1110. how

  1111. amazing

  1112. he

  1113. is

  1114. and

  1115. to

  1116. go

  1117. and

  1118. tell

  1119. other

  1120. people

  1121. what

  1122. he

  1123. has

  1124. done

  1125. so

  1126. let

  1127. me

  1128. encourage

  1129. you

  1130. at

  1131. some

  1132. point

  1133. Christmas

  1134. day

  1135. boxing

  1136. day

  1137. the next

  1138. couple

  1139. of

  1140. days

  1141. which

  1142. all

  1143. kind

  1144. of

  1145. blur

  1146. into

  1147. one

  1148. long

  1149. mass

  1150. of

  1151. food

  1152. and

  1153. napping

  1154. take

  1155. a

  1156. moment

  1157. to

  1158. dwell

  1159. on

  1160. how

  1161. amazing

  1162. it

  1163. is

  1164. that

  1165. Jesus

  1166. came

  1167. and

  1168. that

  1169. we

  1170. get

  1171. to

  1172. be

  1173. part

  1174. of

  1175. this

  1176. story

  1177. of

  1178. God's
