  1. Good morning, everyone. Today, as Debbie mentioned, is the last Sunday of the year.

  2. It's the last Sunday of the decade, the end of this 10-year period.

  3. And as we start a new year, we're often thinking about New Year's resolutions.

  4. You know, I want to be reading the Bible more. I want to get healthy. I want to lose weight. I want to get a new job.

  5. But before we can get to our New Year's resolutions, I believe it's important for us to end the year well.

  6. Not only that, but let's end this decade well.

  7. I'm not sure for you, but the last 10 years has brought a number of different joys and pains for us.

  8. I've lost a number of family members.

  9. But there's also been significant joys.

  10. In the last 10 years for us, I finished full-time work.

  11. I went and became a full-time student at Moore College.

  12. I started at St. Paul's. I left St. Paul's.

  13. I worked somewhere and then I came back to St. Paul's.

  14. We have had three children in 10 years.

  15. Much has happened in that period of time.

  16. Now, as we start looking at a new year and a new decade,

  17. we can be thinking about all those things we want to achieve.

  18. But we actually need to deal with this year first.

  19. And all the baggage that it brings.

  20. There's no point setting your sights really high on a new year

  21. if you're dragging 10 years worth of baggage and pain and hurt and sin behind you.

  22. Thinking that everything will change just because we've got a new calendar

  23. doesn't really make any sense.

  24. And thinking that we'll just have a better relationship with God

  25. because I'm going to try harder for a January run

  26. doesn't necessarily make sense either.

  27. We need to be dealing with the baggage that we have at this point

  28. to be able to go forward growing and following Jesus.

  29. In a different time, an era was marked.

  30. When Jesus was born, it has changed everything in our world.

  31. So much so that our entire calendars function around when he was born.

  32. But when Jesus was born, it's not just a matter of time being changed,

  33. but of salvation.

  34. God became man.

  35. And this world will never be the same again.

  36. And so today, as we head to the end of the year and the end of the decade,

  37. we're going to see how two people respond when they meet this baby Jesus.

  38. These two prophets, they're also going to challenge how we come before Jesus

  39. and how he is preparing us for the next 10 years.

  40. We meet these two characters, Anna and Simeon, and they're at the temple.

  41. Jesus' parents had taken him to the temple to obey the law.

  42. Please have your Bibles open with me.

  43. We're in Luke chapter 2, finishing our series, looking at the infancy narrative.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  44. This is the end of the stories about Jesus as a baby.

  45. He's eight days old at this point, and we're in verse 22 of chapter 2.

  46. When the time came for the purification rites required by the law of Moses,

  47. Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.

  48. As it is written in the law of the Lord,

  49. every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord

  50. and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the law of the Lord,

  51. a pair of doves or two young pigeons.

  52. The law stated that there were purification ceremonies

  53. that needed to happen after birth.

  54. And here they come and they offer birds to be sacrificed for their corruption and sin.

  55. After birth, Mary would have been ritually unclean.

  56. But the focus is not on Mary here, but it is on Jesus.

  57. And yet it seems strange that Jesus would need to be purified.

  58. He was born without blemish or spot.

  59. He doesn't need the death of birds to keep him in relationship with God.

  60. He has no sin that needs to be forgiven.

  61. And he's been with God for eternity.

  62. And yet here, just like when Jesus is baptized,

  63. he is identifying with us.

  64. And it's a reminder of how contagious sin is.

  65. We catch it from our mother and father in our birth.

  66. Jesus here, even at the age of eight days old,

  67. is directing us to God's grace.

  68. The pollutions that we all come into the world with

  69. are going to be washed away because of the birth of Jesus,

  70. through the grace of God.

  71. And as they come into this temple to do this ceremony,

  72. they speak to two people, Anna the prophetess and Simeon.

  73. Neither of these people have official roles.

  74. They're not the Pharisee.

  75. They're not the Sadducee.

  76. They're not the high priest in the temple.

  77. They're both described as old.

  78. And culturally, that means that they're well-respected, reliable witnesses.

  79. And there's a certain completeness that comes from having

  80. both a male and a female witness to the fulfillment of Jesus.

  81. And so we're going to briefly look at Anna,

  82. who's at the end of the passage,

  83. and then come back and spend some more time on Simeon.

  84. Verse 36.

  85. There was also a prophet, Anna,

  86. the daughter of Penuel of the tribe of Asher.

  87. She was very old.

  88. She had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage.

  89. And then was a widow until she was 84.

  90. Now, it's not exactly clear whether Anna was 84 years old

  91. or whether she had been a widow for 84 years.

  92. But what is clear is this woman was a faithful follower of God.

  93. Verse 37.

  94. She never left the temple,

  95. but worshipped night and day,

  96. fasting and praying.

  97. And she has finally seen what she has been fasting and praying for.

  98. Coming up to them at that very moment,

  99. verse 38,

  100. she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child

  101. to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

  102. The redemption of Jerusalem.

  103. This is what she's been looking forward to.

  104. And she makes this public expression of gratitude.

  105. Gratitude.

  106. This is a wonderful picture of an old and frail woman

  107. who has been patiently waiting for the Lord.

  108. And she meets Jesus.

  109. And she goes off to all who are like her,

  110. looking for God to act.

  111. I think she is a wonderful challenge to us.

  112. She was fasting and praying in the temple,

  113. waiting to see God act.

  114. Do we have that same kind of patience and persistence with God?

  115. Fasting is a very helpful spiritual practice.

  116. I've fasted before.

  117. But what it helps someone to do is to focus on God

  118. and focus on your dependence on God.

  119. It's a reminder that God is the one who sustains and feeds.

  120. It gives you more time,

  121. because you're not doing things like preparing food and cleaning up.

  122. It gives you more time to read the Bible,

  123. more time to pray.

  124. When you feel hungry, you pray.

  125. And it's a wonderful discipline to do.

  126. Let me know if you'd like to find out more

  127. about the spiritual discipline of fasting.

  128. And so Anna had been praying and fasting.

  129. And Luke says she never left the temple.

  130. Now, I'm not necessarily going to encourage you

  131. to come in here.

  132. You need to sit down in the front where Abby is.

  133. You need to be fasting and praying every day of the week.

  134. We don't need to go to a holy place anymore to do that.

  135. But at this time, that's what Anna is doing.

  136. She's been fasting and praying.

  137. And finally, after 84 years, God has answered her prayer.

  138. Now, I'm not sure what you're praying for.

  139. I'm not sure what God is putting on your heart to be praying for.

  140. But Anna is an encouragement for us to do two things.

  141. Firstly, to pray and keep praying,

  142. even when it's hard, even when our hearts give way.

  143. But also, that God does answer our prayers.

  144. It might not be in our timing.

  145. But God does answer our prayers.

  146. It might not be a yes.

  147. It could be a yes.

  148. It could be a no.

  149. It could be a wait.

  150. And Anna certainly waited 84 years.

  151. But now she has seen Jesus.

  152. She has seen the redemption of Jerusalem.

  153. And what a huge prayer that is to ask.

  154. I want to see your redemption in this country.

  155. And she has gotten to see it.

  156. But even then, to wait another 30 odd years to see his crucifixion and resurrection.

  157. And even now, we are waiting to see Jesus return.

  158. So let me encourage you to pray like Anna.

  159. Pray with dependence on God brought about by fasting.

  160. And be saturated in God's Word as you do it.

  161. So that's Anna.

  162. What a wonderful encouragement to pray and to be dependent on God.

  163. And the second character we meet is a gentleman called Simeon.

  164. Verse 25.

  165. Now, there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon,

  166. who was righteous and devout.

  167. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel.

  168. And the Holy Spirit was on him.

  169. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit,

  170. that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Messiah.

  171. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.

  172. It's really interesting here that in these three verses,

  173. it's mentioned three times that Simeon either has the Holy Spirit on him,

  174. or is moved by the Holy Spirit.

  175. This is in marked contrast to the entire Old Testament.

  176. The Holy Spirit came on people sparingly.

  177. But now, something has changed.

  178. Jesus has been born, and God is pouring out his Holy Spirit just as he promised to do.

  179. Not only is God with us, Emmanuel, in Jesus,

  180. but he is dwelling inside people in the Holy Spirit,

  181. in numbers that we just had not seen before.

  182. And Simeon, like Anna, is waiting on God.

  183. Waiting because he'd been promised that he would see God's Messiah.

  184. Simeon, he's waiting for this Messiah.

  185. He's waiting for God's chosen one.

  186. Because faith in Jesus, it's the fulfillment of all of his hopes and expectations of his people.

  187. And there's this beautiful moment when Joseph and Mary bring Jesus in,

  188. and Simeon sees the baby Jesus.

  189. He meets him, and he sings the last of these songs in the infancy narratives.

  190. There's a number of songs all throughout these first two chapters.

  191. This is the last of the songs, the shortest of them,

  192. but it's still quite lovely.

  193. Verse 28.

  194. Simeon took him, that is Jesus, in his arms,

  195. and praised God, saying,

  196. Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,

  197. you may now dismiss your servant in peace.

  198. For my eyes have seen your salvation,

  199. which you have prepared in the sight of all nations,

  200. a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

  201. and the glory of your people Israel.

  202. That's this lovely song.

  203. I kind of feel like I should be singing these songs,

  204. as we've been going through them.

  205. But you can write a melody for me for next year.

  206. But Simeon's emphasis is on God's timing.

  207. Now I can die.

  208. Now you may dismiss your servant in peace.

  209. Now, because everything has changed.

  210. Now a new era has begun.

  211. Now, God, your story of salvation,

  212. I can see it unfolding.

  213. Simeon, he's a trusting servant,

  214. and God is a faithful master.

  215. And Simeon can say,

  216. God, look, I'm ready to die now.

  217. I hand myself over to you,

  218. because I've seen your goodness,

  219. I have seen your salvation for my people,

  220. and for all of the world.

  221. And then Simeon, full of the Holy Spirit,

  222. prophesies about the work of Jesus.

  223. Verse 34.

  224. Can you imagine being Mary at this point,

  225. hearing this?

  226. Her little eight-day-old baby

  227. was going to cause people to rise and to fall,

  228. to cause a sword to pierce her heart,

  229. her soul.

  230. Simeon is saying that Jesus is going to be

  231. a tool of division.

  232. He would cause division amongst people,

  233. two different types of division.

  234. He would divide those who follow him

  235. and those who don't,

  236. and he would divide people's hearts

  237. so that their hearts would be revealed.

  238. Jesus is going to come and divide people

  239. into those who follow and don't follow,

  240. and for those who follow,

  241. their very hearts are going to be divided

  242. and revealed.

  243. When we are confronted by Jesus,

  244. we can't remain neutral.

  245. We can't have no opinion of him.

  246. He will either confront our need for God

  247. and lead us to faith in him,

  248. or we will push against Jesus

  249. and reject him.

  250. Simeon's prophecy points to Jesus' dividing nature.

  251. He will split families,

  252. some believing, some not,

  253. brother against brother,

  254. sister against mother,

  255. because you can't remain neutral to Jesus.

  256. He pierces to the very heart

  257. and reveals what is within.

  258. And when we are confronted with who we are,

  259. we can admit our fault

  260. and our need for God,

  261. or we can flee.

  262. Simeon says that Jesus has come

  263. so that the thoughts of many hearts

  264. would be revealed

  265. and a sword would pierce Mary's soul too.

  266. Now,

  267. the heart in the ancient world,

  268. that was the place where the thoughts

  269. and the feelings and the desires

  270. and the attitudes dwelt.

  271. You know,

  272. it's fairly similar for us.

  273. We might think things,

  274. but we feel things.

  275. This is the location of our heart.

  276. Maybe we might even say in our gut,

  277. a little further down.

  278. But in the ancient world,

  279. it was the heart

  280. where the thoughts

  281. and the feelings

  282. and the attitudes,

  283. the hidden things,

  284. were.

  285. And the Bible as a whole

  286. presents Jesus

  287. as the Word of God

  288. and the Word is like a sword.

  289. So a little later in Hebrews,

  290. it says that the Word of God is,

  291. again, like a sword,

  292. sharper than any double-edged sword.

  293. It penetrates even to dividing

  294. soul and spirit,

  295. joint and marrow,

  296. and it judges the thoughts

  297. and attitudes of the heart.

  298. Jesus is going to function

  299. like a double-edged sword.

  300. It's interesting that

  301. in Simeon's prophecy,

  302. he uses this idea of a sword

  303. piercing to the heart.

  304. Now, in the ancient world,

  305. in the Roman world in particular,

  306. there were two types of main swords

  307. that they used.

  308. They used a sword called the makara

  309. and the gladius.

  310. The makara was a single-bladed

  311. hacking weapon.

  312. I have the Chinese version here

  313. because, you know,

  314. props are always good.

  315. So this is the Chinese dao.

  316. So this,

  317. similar type of weapon

  318. to the makara,

  319. it's a good hacking weapon, okay?

  320. You know, think about a rider

  321. on the top of a horse

  322. hacking down.

  323. You don't need both sides

  324. to be sharp.

  325. It has a single focus.

  326. And the other was the gladius.

  327. The gladius was a double-edged weapon.

  328. So this is the Chinese jen.

  329. The gladius was shorter,

  330. but also double-edged.

  331. These weapons are used

  332. not for hacking,

  333. these are used for piercing.

  334. This tool was a much more

  335. delicate weapon.

  336. You don't hack

  337. because you'll break the blade.

  338. You try and pierce armor

  339. and go between the ribs

  340. to get to organs.

  341. That's the function

  342. of a double-edged weapon.

  343. That's what it does.

  344. It's designed to pierce.

  345. So there's a nice little

  346. weapon lesson.

  347. Jesus, as the word of God,

  348. is the double-edged sword.

  349. He's not a hacking tool.

  350. He comes to penetrate

  351. to our inmost being.

  352. He gets through

  353. all of our defenses

  354. that we have made.

  355. The feelings of security

  356. in our job,

  357. our feelings of happiness

  358. in life that we have made,

  359. the idea that we're

  360. good people generally

  361. and God should love me

  362. and God should bless me.

  363. He cuts through

  364. all of that to the heart

  365. and He judges our thoughts

  366. and our attitudes.

  367. Have you ever had that moment

  368. sitting in church

  369. or maybe reading the Bible

  370. at home thinking,

  371. He's talking to me right now.

  372. He's talking to me.

  373. Why is He picking on me

  374. out of all these people?

  375. When that happens,

  376. when we feel like

  377. the preacher

  378. or the Bible reading

  379. is targeting us,

  380. that is the word of God.

  381. That is Jesus Himself

  382. piercing our defenses,

  383. cutting between them all

  384. and getting to our very soul.

  385. Simeon is prophesying

  386. that Jesus would come

  387. and He would cut people

  388. to the heart.

  389. He would divide

  390. their very thoughts

  391. and feelings

  392. and attitudes

  393. and souls

  394. and when that mess

  395. is revealed,

  396. people will be divided.

  397. I think our hearts

  398. can be like this plastic bottle.

  399. I've got lots of props

  400. today actually.

  401. I think our hearts

  402. can be like this plastic bottle.

  403. There's a little bit of oil

  404. and mainly food dye in there.

  405. But I think this is

  406. what our hearts are like.

  407. All throughout the last decade

  408. in particular,

  409. it's been filled

  410. with all kinds of things.

  411. Sin,

  412. resentment,

  413. anger,

  414. sexual temptation,

  415. lust,

  416. frustration,

  417. frustration and pain

  418. because I didn't get the job,

  419. anger because I can't afford

  420. the house I want,

  421. lust is damaging

  422. my relationships

  423. with other people.

  424. And as we look

  425. into the new year

  426. and to the new decade,

  427. we have a heart like this.

  428. And one of my favorite

  429. new sayings is

  430. new year,

  431. new me.

  432. Have you heard this saying?

  433. New year,

  434. new me.

  435. And we think,

  436. oh, it's a new year.

  437. It'll be a new me.

  438. But we are carrying

  439. a heart that is like this.

  440. And what we do

  441. is we just think,

  442. oh, I'm just going to try

  443. really hard

  444. at the start of the year.

  445. I'm going to give it

  446. a good shake.

  447. And this year's going

  448. to be totally different.

  449. Everything's going

  450. to be totally different.

  451. Look,

  452. I've tried really hard

  453. all throughout January

  454. and it's

  455. still the exact same.

  456. And we wonder

  457. why when it comes

  458. to February,

  459. nothing has changed.

  460. What we need

  461. is

  462. a puncture wound.

  463. What we need

  464. is a sword

  465. to pierce us.

  466. I don't know.

  467. I don't want to damage

  468. one of my swords

  469. but I do have

  470. a Stanley knife.

  471. What we actually need

  472. is a sword

  473. to come in.

  474. Let's not make

  475. too much mess.

  476. We need a sword

  477. to come in

  478. and

  479. get the gunk out.

  480. We actually need

  481. it

  482. to be released.

  483. Otherwise,

  484. we're just going

  485. to keep pretending

  486. that everything

  487. is fine.

  488. We're going

  489. to keep pretending

  490. that we've got

  491. this rotten heart

  492. but we're going

  493. to ignore it

  494. and we're going

  495. to think,

  496. I can go into

  497. this new year

  498. and everything

  499. will change

  500. and I'm going

  501. to be the best

  502. Christian next year.

  503. We need that

  504. sword of Jesus.

  505. Miami,

  506. you're looking

  507. very stressed there.

  508. We need that

  509. sword of Jesus

  510. to pierce

  511. our hearts

  512. and let the gunk,

  513. let the horrible

  514. sin out.

  515. Jesus comes

  516. to pierce us.

  517. He is sharper

  518. than any

  519. double-edged sword.

  520. He comes

  521. to divide

  522. our hearts

  523. and our thoughts

  524. and our attitudes.

  525. Without that

  526. sword piercing us,

  527. we could trick

  528. ourselves into

  529. thinking that

  530. everything was fine

  531. but we actually

  532. need this

  533. so it reveals

  534. who we are

  535. but let me tell

  536. you what,

  537. this is not fun.

  538. You know,

  539. stabbing that bottle,

  540. you know,

  541. if that bottle

  542. could scream,

  543. it probably would have.

  544. A little while ago

  545. I had some sin

  546. pointed out to me

  547. and it was like

  548. a stab wound

  549. straight between

  550. the ribs.

  551. It was really

  552. painful

  553. being confronted

  554. with what

  555. had been

  556. a hidden sin.

  557. A sin that

  558. had been

  559. filling up

  560. within me

  561. for years.

  562. And I very much

  563. wanted to keep

  564. this sin hidden.

  565. It wasn't until

  566. it was pointed out

  567. and lanced

  568. like a boil,

  569. like a stab wound

  570. into a plastic bottle

  571. filled with food

  572. colouring,

  573. did the gunk

  574. start pouring out

  575. the secretiveness,

  576. the evasiveness.

  577. But it took

  578. that initial

  579. stab wound

  580. and confrontation

  581. with what was

  582. inside.

  583. I need Jesus

  584. to keep piercing

  585. my soul,

  586. getting between

  587. my ribs,

  588. my armour

  589. that I set up

  590. to pretend

  591. that I'm actually

  592. a good guy

  593. so that I can

  594. be made

  595. more like Jesus.

  596. God's work

  597. when it

  598. pierces

  599. causes a

  600. response.

  601. You can't

  602. stay indifferent

  603. to Jesus

  604. at that moment.

  605. You will either

  606. fall on your

  607. knees and

  608. repent

  609. for what is

  610. coming out

  611. or you're

  612. going to

  613. slap sticky

  614. tape on it.

  615. You're going

  616. to build

  617. bandages

  618. around yourself.

  619. You're going

  620. to build

  621. walls

  622. to try

  623. and protect

  624. yourself.

  625. But we

  626. don't need

  627. to protect

  628. ourselves

  629. because we

  630. have a

  631. God who

  632. has died

  633. to protect

  634. us.

  635. As we

  636. come to

  637. the end

  638. of the

  639. decade,

  640. the 2010s

  641. are closing

  642. out,

  643. it is important

  644. to take a

  645. moment and

  646. stop,

  647. to spend

  648. some time

  649. doing business

  650. with God

  651. and seeing

  652. what our

  653. hearts are

  654. like and not

  655. just assuming

  656. that everything

  657. will be fine.

  658. There's no

  659. point going

  660. into the 2020s

  661. with a

  662. heart full

  663. of arrogance

  664. and sin

  665. and sexual

  666. immorality

  667. and selfishness.

  668. Book some

  669. time over

  670. the next

  671. couple of

  672. days to

  673. do some

  674. business with

  675. God.

  676. It's likely

  677. that a lot

  678. of us have

  679. time before

  680. Sydney kicks

  681. back in.

  682. I want to

  683. congratulate you

  684. all on

  685. remembering what

  686. day it was

  687. to come to

  688. church today.

  689. It's often

  690. hard between

  691. Christmas and

  692. New Year's to

  693. remember what

  694. day it is.

  695. But it's

  696. likely that we've

  697. got a little

  698. bit of time.

  699. Go and spend

  700. some time

  701. with God.

  702. Ask him,

  703. God,

  704. pierce my

  705. soul.

  706. Let me

  707. know how

  708. I need to

  709. change.

  710. Ask for

  711. help from

  712. a friend.

  713. If you

  714. invite a

  715. friend,

  716. they will

  717. tell you.

  718. Ask God

  719. and ask

  720. your friend,

  721. God,

  722. what is the

  723. one biggest

  724. sin that I

  725. need to

  726. confront to

  727. leave in

  728. this decade

  729. before I

  730. start 2020?

  731. take a

  732. look at

  733. your sin,

  734. own it

  735. and acknowledge

  736. that it's

  737. yours and

  738. that Jesus

  739. came to

  740. get rid of

  741. it so

  742. that we

  743. could have

  744. peace,

  745. trusting in

  746. him and

  747. peace with

  748. him because

  749. he loves us

  750. and he died

  751. for us.

  752. Let me pray

  753. for us.

  754. with

  755. peace

  756. of

  757. him

  758. too
