  1. Suffering. Is God really almighty?

  2. It was January 2006.

  3. I was 18 and had been selected as the New South Wales Youth Ambassador for World Vision Australia.

  4. Now, as part of this year of volunteering, I took up, during my undergraduate degree,

  5. I travelled to the very newly independent nation of Timor-Leste.

  6. Now, prior to going, I really knew nothing about Timor-Leste.

  7. I mean, what would an 18-year-old boy really think about?

  8. He'd never heard of the term.

  9. I recall I had to look it up, this country, on a map, just to confirm where in the world was it.

  10. And to my surprise, it was only a very short distance from Australia's northernmost city, Darwin.

  11. Now, the reason for myself and five others going was to reveal the story of Timor and its current suffering

  12. to a nation of teenagers and children more interested in the next PlayStation.

  13. Timor's history is one of profound suffering.

  14. Hundreds of years of colonial rule by the Portuguese, World War II invasion by the Japanese,

  15. and 24 years of brutal Indonesian occupation.

  16. During the Indonesian occupation that started nine days after the Portuguese rolled out in 1975,

  17. as many as a quarter of the population, or 250,000 people,

  18. had died from violence, famine, or diseases over the next two and a half decades.

  19. After a famous UN administered successful independence vote in September 1999,

  20. the country was torched to the ground.

  21. Some of you may remember this, by pro-Indonesian militia.

  22. Some 1,400 people died in a few weeks,

  23. and 80% of the country's infrastructure was destroyed.

  24. When we arrived just over five years later,

  25. the then youngest nation in the world was in the midst of a severe hunger crisis.

  26. The rate of malnutrition was the highest in Southeast Asia.

  27. The maternal mortality rate was the highest in the world.

  28. And here was a now free nation,

  29. covered in a cloak of silent suffering,

  30. every hungry season,

  31. where people would have literally nothing to eat for months and months.

  32. And all of this, just one hour flight from Darwin.

  33. This photo will stay with me for a very long time.

  34. It was taken in the district of Aliu,

  35. just about an hour south of Dili, the capital.

  36. We had just met a mother named Isabel,

  37. and met some of her children.

  38. They were a poor family

  39. that lived on maize and cassava.

  40. There was no electricity in their community.

  41. And she told us the story

  42. of how three of her own children had died

  43. because of hunger.

  44. One was just eight months

  45. and had not died long ago.

  46. This was the grave site

  47. behind their house

  48. and their three children

  49. under a small set of stones.

  50. This was me

  51. at that moment,

  52. hit by the silence

  53. of suffering.

  54. We learned that the village was unusual

  55. in that it had a Protestant church.

  56. The majority of Timor is

  57. Catholic.

  58. And the mother, Isabel, said,

  59. and I remember her saying this,

  60. that life is short

  61. and that the children

  62. who had died

  63. were happy

  64. with their Father in heaven.

  65. This morning,

  66. I want us to come before the Lord

  67. in the recognition

  68. that things in our world

  69. are not right.

  70. They're not just.

  71. And yet,

  72. the Lord is here

  73. with us

  74. in it.

  75. He knows Isabel's suffering.

  76. He knows our suffering.

  77. And He is inviting

  78. our community

  79. in Chatswood

  80. to resist

  81. what suffering

  82. and evil does

  83. and to remind ourselves

  84. that God stands

  85. in solidarity with us.

  86. Not only that,

  87. but He takes responsibility

  88. for the evil

  89. and suffering

  90. in the world

  91. as creation awaits

  92. its complete

  93. transformation

  94. and redemption.

  95. As we open ourselves up

  96. this morning,

  97. our hearts

  98. and the word today,

  99. I want us,

  100. I want to remind us

  101. that in the context

  102. of suffering

  103. and the sovereignty

  104. of God,

  105. there are these great words

  106. from Paul.

  107. For now we see

  108. only a reflection

  109. as in a mirror.

  110. Then we shall see

  111. face to face.

  112. Now I know

  113. in part,

  114. then I shall know

  115. fully,

  116. even as I am

  117. fully known

  118. from 1 Corinthians 13.

  119. So can we just

  120. take this moment

  121. to pray

  122. as we explore

  123. God's Word,

  124. which is our only

  125. source of light

  126. and truth.

  127. Heavenly Father,

  128. King of Kings,

  129. we thank you,

  130. Lord,

  131. that you are present

  132. this morning with us

  133. in all of our griefs,

  134. in all of our heartbreaks,

  135. in all of our sufferings.

  136. Lord,

  137. help us to see

  138. your light,

  139. your truth

  140. in the darkness,

  141. and may we bring you

  142. unending glory.

  143. In Jesus' name,

  144. Amen.

  145. So,

  146. as you know,

  147. we're going through

  148. the Apostles' Creed,

  149. and particularly

  150. the first sentence,

  151. which talks about

  152. Father Almighty

  153. creator of heaven

  154. and earth.

  155. So firstly,

  156. who is Father Almighty?

  157. These two powerful

  158. words together,

  159. words to describe God,

  160. that He is both

  161. our heavenly Father,

  162. the one we refer,

  163. that Jesus refers to

  164. as Abba,

  165. Abba Father,

  166. reflecting that sense

  167. of being known

  168. personally by your Father,

  169. as well as,

  170. on the other hand,

  171. Almighty.

  172. Almighty,

  173. something you would

  174. normally attribute

  175. to a king.

  176. Often,

  177. perhaps in Australia,

  178. a sporting icon

  179. is the closest reference

  180. to Almighty.

  181. In Melbourne,

  182. where Kate and I

  183. spent six years,

  184. there is only one person

  185. in sporting terms,

  186. at least,

  187. who meets the criteria

  188. of the Almighty,

  189. Almighty.

  190. And his name is

  191. Sir Gary Ablett.

  192. Now,

  193. I may imagine

  194. that you're not all

  195. AFL aficionados,

  196. but this man

  197. was known

  198. and referred to

  199. widely

  200. as God.

  201. He was called

  202. God,

  203. because he could do

  204. all things.

  205. Apparently,

  206. things that no other

  207. person could do,

  208. like mark a ball

  209. on top of the shoulders

  210. of someone else.

  211. I mean,

  212. who can do that?

  213. But apart from Gary,

  214. I would suspect

  215. very few people

  216. get such a title

  217. in Australia.

  218. In Australia,

  219. at least,

  220. they would be humiliated

  221. pretty quickly

  222. by those around them,

  223. like brought down

  224. to size.

  225. You are not

  226. Almighty.

  227. Let's remind

  228. ourselves of that.

  229. So,

  230. what are we

  231. to make

  232. of God's

  233. Almighty character?

  234. In what way

  235. does this go together

  236. with him

  237. as our Heavenly Father

  238. who loves his children?

  239. And to help us

  240. consider this,

  241. we're looking at Psalm 33.

  242. So,

  243. please,

  244. I encourage you,

  245. take your sheets out

  246. or find a Bible

  247. and open Psalm 33.

  248. The first thing

  249. to notice about this psalm

  250. is that it celebrates

  251. the Lord

  252. as Redeemer,

  253. Creator,

  254. Judge,

  255. and Savior,

  256. all in one psalm.

  257. It is a song

  258. that is a reflection

  259. of the whole history

  260. of God's people,

  261. in particular,

  262. his sovereignty

  263. in and through history

  264. in delivering

  265. on his promises.

  266. It looks back

  267. into the covenantal history,

  268. the agreement

  269. or the covenant

  270. between God

  271. and his people,

  272. Israel,

  273. and declares

  274. in verse 4,

  275. for the word

  276. of the Lord

  277. is right

  278. and true.

  279. He is faithful

  280. in all

  281. he does.

  282. The psalm

  283. reveals these

  284. three key things

  285. that illuminate

  286. him as Father

  287. Almighty.

  288. The first,

  289. the unmatchable

  290. power of his word.

  291. Verse 6,

  292. by the word

  293. of the Lord,

  294. by the breath

  295. of his mouth.

  296. He need only

  297. speak

  298. and it is.

  299. This echoes

  300. for us,

  301. surely,

  302. Jesus,

  303. who in the gospel

  304. of Luke,

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  305. chapter 8,

  306. speaks and calms

  307. the storm

  308. in the presence

  309. of his terrified

  310. disciples.

  311. All he has to do

  312. is speak.

  313. There is such power.

  314. number 2.2,

  315. he sees and knows

  316. all people.

  317. He has formed

  318. the hearts

  319. of all

  320. on the earth.

  321. Verse 13

  322. to 15,

  323. from heaven

  324. the Lord looks

  325. down and sees

  326. all mankind.

  327. From his dwelling

  328. place he watches

  329. all who live

  330. on earth.

  331. He forms

  332. the hearts

  333. of all

  334. who considers

  335. everything

  336. they do.

  337. There is no one

  338. in the world

  339. the Lord

  340. does not know.

  341. In the whole

  342. world,

  343. in whole

  344. of human history,

  345. in that sense,

  346. we see another

  347. reflection of

  348. his mighty power.

  349. No one

  350. falls out

  351. of his

  352. understanding.

  353. And point 3,

  354. finally,

  355. no king,

  356. not even

  357. the greatest

  358. powers or

  359. armies on

  360. earth,

  361. is outside

  362. the reach

  363. or power

  364. of the Lord.

  365. Verse 16,

  366. no king

  367. is saved

  368. by the size

  369. of his army,

  370. no warrior

  371. escapes by

  372. his great

  373. strength.

  374. In the

  375. context of

  376. when this

  377. was written,

  378. a king

  379. had all

  380. power,

  381. you could

  382. imagine.

  383. And the

  384. psalmist

  385. is saying,

  386. even God

  387. has greater

  388. power.

  389. power.

  390. No world

  391. superpower in

  392. all human

  393. history matches

  394. the strength

  395. of God.

  396. He is the

  397. king of kings.

  398. And so,

  399. we hold in

  400. one hand that

  401. he is

  402. father almighty,

  403. and when we

  404. learn he is

  405. also creator

  406. of all.

  407. He is the

  408. creator of

  409. the heavens

  410. and the

  411. earth,

  412. of galaxies,

  413. of the

  414. hundreds of

  415. billions of

  416. galaxies,

  417. and also of

  418. nanoparticles.

  419. verse 6

  420. and 7.

  421. By the

  422. word of

  423. the Lord

  424. were the

  425. heavens made,

  426. their starry

  427. host by

  428. the breath

  429. of his

  430. mouth.

  431. He gathers

  432. the waters

  433. of the

  434. seas into

  435. jars.

  436. He puts

  437. the deep

  438. into

  439. storehouses.

  440. To him,

  441. all of the

  442. waters of

  443. the sea

  444. are as if

  445. they would

  446. fall into

  447. a simple

  448. jar,

  449. or the

  450. deep of

  451. the ocean

  452. into a

  453. simple

  454. garage.

  455. a

  456. storehouse.

  457. The

  458. psalmist is

  459. declaring the

  460. divine ownership

  461. of the

  462. whole earth,

  463. the whole

  464. universe,

  465. to God.

  466. But God

  467. did not just

  468. create the

  469. heavens and

  470. the earth

  471. and then

  472. stand to

  473. one side

  474. and say,

  475. okay,

  476. done.

  477. He sustains

  478. it.

  479. Every moment

  480. of every

  481. day,

  482. as we gather

  483. at this

  484. very time,

  485. the Lord

  486. is sustaining

  487. creation.

  488. Christopher

  489. Wright

  490. helpfully

  491. puts it

  492. like this.

  493. He says,

  494. creation then

  495. is distinct

  496. from God

  497. its creator,

  498. but it

  499. also is

  500. totally

  501. dependent

  502. upon God.

  503. Creation

  504. is not

  505. independent

  506. or co-eternal,

  507. rather,

  508. God is

  509. actively and

  510. unceasingly

  511. sustaining its

  512. existence and

  513. its functions

  514. at macro

  515. and micro

  516. levels.

  517. It's just

  518. the sheer

  519. power and

  520. might of

  521. God as

  522. creator.

  523. So this

  524. is the

  525. sovereign

  526. Lord of

  527. the universe.

  528. This is what

  529. we mean when

  530. we understand

  531. his sovereignty,

  532. creator of

  533. galaxies,

  534. who knows

  535. the hearts

  536. of everyone

  537. who walked

  538. on the

  539. earth.

  540. And what's

  541. most profound

  542. to me is

  543. that this

  544. creator of

  545. galaxies,

  546. he loves

  547. you.

  548. You know,

  549. let's just

  550. sit on that.

  551. The creator

  552. of the

  553. universe

  554. loves

  555. you.

  556. He loves

  557. you.

  558. I want

  559. everyone to

  560. say that.

  561. He loves

  562. me.

  563. Amen.

  564. It's no

  565. small thing.

  566. It is a

  567. gift of

  568. love revealed

  569. most perfectly

  570. in the

  571. person of

  572. Jesus.

  573. And all

  574. we have

  575. to do

  576. is accept

  577. his love.

  578. And what

  579. you find,

  580. and what

  581. you will

  582. find,

  583. is that

  584. when you

  585. accept that

  586. love,

  587. your love

  588. for him

  589. will be

  590. greater than

  591. you can

  592. possibly

  593. imagine.

  594. So let's

  595. turn now

  596. to suffering,

  597. which we've

  598. been talking

  599. about a

  600. little bit

  601. already.

  602. The question

  603. I want us

  604. to consider

  605. is,

  606. how do we

  607. live in

  608. the reality

  609. of an

  610. almighty

  611. God

  612. in the

  613. midst

  614. of

  615. suffering

  616. and a

  617. broken

  618. world?

  619. You see,

  620. when we

  621. truly face

  622. the tragic

  623. reality of

  624. suffering and

  625. evil in

  626. our world,

  627. our answer

  628. for everything

  629. culture

  630. that we

  631. live in

  632. and inhabit

  633. screams the

  634. question,

  635. why?

  636. Why does

  637. God allow

  638. this?

  639. This

  640. suffering?

  641. This

  642. evil?

  643. Something that

  644. really hit me

  645. this week,

  646. and in fact it

  647. was as we

  648. were sitting

  649. here last

  650. Sunday,

  651. and I was

  652. preparing,

  653. the Lord was

  654. preparing this

  655. word,

  656. this sermon

  657. for this

  658. Sunday,

  659. I was

  660. reflecting,

  661. and I'm

  662. sure many

  663. of you

  664. have,

  665. on the

  666. terrible

  667. deaths of

  668. four children

  669. by a

  670. drunk

  671. 29-year-old

  672. driver in

  673. Western

  674. Sydney.

  675. This is

  676. truly a

  677. weighty

  678. matter.

  679. I was

  680. grieving this

  681. all last

  682. week.

  683. I lamented.

  684. I said,

  685. how Lord,

  686. these children,

  687. I saw my

  688. children in

  689. these children,

  690. I saw

  691. myself in

  692. the father,

  693. I saw

  694. Kate in

  695. the mother.

  696. Can I

  697. encourage you,

  698. if you

  699. haven't had a

  700. chance to

  701. watch the

  702. video of

  703. Leela,

  704. the mother,

  705. speaking after

  706. the incident,

  707. inspired by

  708. her Lebanese

  709. Orthodox faith

  710. in Jesus,

  711. she speaks

  712. as a mother

  713. who knows

  714. the resurrection

  715. of Jesus

  716. is her only

  717. hope in

  718. the face

  719. of profound

  720. suffering and

  721. grief.

  722. Some of you

  723. may be aware

  724. that I serve

  725. at International

  726. Justice Mission

  727. Australia.

  728. IJM is an

  729. organization that

  730. considers itself

  731. first and

  732. before anything

  733. a community

  734. of Christian

  735. spiritual

  736. formation.

  737. That is the

  738. primary thing

  739. that we are

  740. as a body.

  741. But we

  742. are also the

  743. largest

  744. anti-slavery

  745. organization in

  746. the world.

  747. And it's

  748. founder Gary

  749. Haugen writes

  750. on the subject

  751. an extremely

  752. helpful book

  753. and I

  754. encourage you

  755. if you would

  756. like to

  757. read,

  758. I've got

  759. one,

  760. I'm happy

  761. to share

  762. it,

  763. good news

  764. about

  765. injustice.

  766. He writes

  767. about being

  768. the lead

  769. UN investigator

  770. to the

  771. Rwandan

  772. genocide

  773. in 1994

  774. that saw

  775. almost 1

  776. million people

  777. killed in

  778. 100 days

  779. in state

  780. sponsored

  781. genocide

  782. and crimes

  783. against

  784. humanity.

  785. Gary

  786. himself

  787. waded

  788. through

  789. thousands

  790. of bodies

  791. to identify

  792. how they

  793. were killed

  794. so that

  795. someday

  796. their families

  797. might receive

  798. justice.

  799. And he

  800. reflects on

  801. the typical

  802. question,

  803. quote,

  804. why does

  805. God allow

  806. so much

  807. injustice

  808. in the

  809. world as

  810. it was

  811. many times

  812. put to

  813. him?

  814. He

  815. responds,

  816. I believe

  817. I've heard

  818. most of

  819. the neat

  820. answers to

  821. these

  822. questions,

  823. a set of

  824. answers which

  825. in Christian

  826. circles often

  827. explode in

  828. a discussion

  829. like an

  830. emergency

  831. ejection

  832. seat,

  833. rescuing

  834. relieved

  835. passages

  836. from a

  837. crush

  838. from a

  839. crash and

  840. burn

  841. confrontation

  842. with

  843. unpleasant

  844. mysteries.

  845. Frankly,

  846. the pat

  847. answers

  848. don't

  849. work

  850. and the

  851. insensitivity

  852. that I

  853. have seen

  854. in myself

  855. and in

  856. others as

  857. we have

  858. addressed

  859. others'

  860. pain has

  861. bordered at

  862. times on

  863. cruelty.

  864. Let's be

  865. honest,

  866. this is

  867. hard.

  868. As Irving

  869. Greenberg,

  870. a writer of

  871. the Holocaust,

  872. has said,

  873. no statement,

  874. theological or

  875. otherwise,

  876. should be

  877. made that

  878. would not

  879. be credible

  880. in the

  881. presence of

  882. burning

  883. children.

  884. That is

  885. very heavy.

  886. And maybe

  887. for you,

  888. you've had

  889. your own

  890. personal

  891. experience of

  892. this,

  893. this level

  894. of suffering

  895. and not

  896. being able

  897. to know

  898. what to

  899. say,

  900. how to

  901. explain

  902. what is

  903. happening.

  904. I have

  905. my own

  906. personal

  907. experience,

  908. family

  909. memory,

  910. where

  911. sometimes no

  912. simple

  913. statement will

  914. suffice.

  915. For me,

  916. I bring

  917. forward my

  918. grandfather I

  919. never met.

  920. Here's a

  921. photo of me

  922. and my

  923. father from

  924. November last

  925. year,

  926. standing at

  927. his grave

  928. site.

  929. He was a

  930. judge in

  931. the highest

  932. court in

  933. Ghana,

  934. my father's

  935. homeland,

  936. and on

  937. June 30,

  938. 1982,

  939. in the

  940. context of

  941. political

  942. corruption

  943. and a

  944. coup,

  945. my father

  946. witnessed

  947. his own

  948. father's,

  949. my

  950. grandfather's

  951. abduction

  952. out the

  953. front of

  954. his house.

  955. The next

  956. day he

  957. found out

  958. that his

  959. father had

  960. been shot,

  961. he had

  962. been

  963. assassinated

  964. alongside

  965. two other

  966. judges and

  967. a retired

  968. army general,

  969. all in the

  970. pursuit of

  971. power.

  972. Last

  973. November,

  974. my father

  975. and all

  976. my aunties

  977. and uncles,

  978. we visited

  979. his grave

  980. site and

  981. it was the

  982. first time

  983. the family

  984. had

  985. gone and

  986. returned to

  987. that place

  988. of grief

  989. and suffering

  990. in 37

  991. years.

  992. I realised

  993. even for

  994. myself,

  995. having never

  996. met him,

  997. I carried

  998. this weight

  999. of his

  1000. suffering my

  1001. whole lifetime

  1002. and I had

  1003. not given

  1004. it over

  1005. to the

  1006. Lord.

  1007. And I

  1008. want to

  1009. invite us

  1010. this moment

  1011. just now,

  1012. here and

  1013. now,

  1014. to bring

  1015. to mind

  1016. perhaps your

  1017. own

  1018. weighty

  1019. suffering

  1020. in your

  1021. family,

  1022. in your

  1023. history.

  1024. And I

  1025. want to

  1026. ask you

  1027. the question,

  1028. will you

  1029. do that?

  1030. Will you

  1031. take that

  1032. moment just

  1033. now,

  1034. in your

  1035. heart,

  1036. bring it

  1037. to mind?

  1038. moment.

  1039. The Psalms

  1040. reveal a

  1041. pattern of

  1042. believers,

  1043. a pattern

  1044. for believers

  1045. of not

  1046. hiding this

  1047. suffering that

  1048. is heavy on

  1049. your heart

  1050. now,

  1051. not hiding

  1052. that suffering

  1053. away,

  1054. but bringing

  1055. it forward,

  1056. open-handed

  1057. and saying,

  1058. Lord,

  1059. here I am.

  1060. I place

  1061. this at

  1062. the foot

  1063. of the

  1064. cross

  1065. before you.

  1066. And friends,

  1067. I want us

  1068. to hear

  1069. this,

  1070. this,

  1071. this,

  1072. that we

  1073. are bringing

  1074. forward,

  1075. is God's

  1076. weight.

  1077. I had

  1078. to pray,

  1079. Lord,

  1080. I am

  1081. handing this

  1082. suffering of

  1083. my grandfather

  1084. and putting

  1085. it at the

  1086. foot of

  1087. the cross.

  1088. because it

  1089. is too

  1090. much for

  1091. me to

  1092. carry.

  1093. So let

  1094. him take

  1095. it.

  1096. He has

  1097. let us

  1098. share a

  1099. little bit

  1100. of his

  1101. heart,

  1102. his own

  1103. pain.

  1104. He knows

  1105. it, but

  1106. he also has

  1107. a passion

  1108. for healing

  1109. and for

  1110. justice.

  1111. And God

  1112. carries the

  1113. weight of

  1114. the world

  1115. suffering more

  1116. than we

  1117. could ever

  1118. understand.

  1119. And so

  1120. the next

  1121. question

  1122. sometimes

  1123. goes is,

  1124. are we

  1125. asking the

  1126. right

  1127. question?

  1128. What does

  1129. God do

  1130. in response

  1131. to evil?

  1132. You see,

  1133. so often

  1134. I see,

  1135. I would

  1136. like us

  1137. to think

  1138. about

  1139. whether we

  1140. can put

  1141. down the

  1142. why question

  1143. and consider

  1144. this from a

  1145. different angle.

  1146. The why

  1147. question does

  1148. not take

  1149. the view

  1150. of the

  1151. many

  1152. specific

  1153. actions

  1154. in history

  1155. of God

  1156. in response

  1157. to evil,

  1158. particularly

  1159. the life,

  1160. death,

  1161. and resurrection

  1162. of Jesus

  1163. Christ.

  1164. You see,

  1165. we are

  1166. completely

  1167. at risk

  1168. of ignoring

  1169. the all

  1170. powerful

  1171. actions

  1172. of God

  1173. throughout

  1174. his word

  1175. when we

  1176. ask,

  1177. why does

  1178. God

  1179. allow evil

  1180. and suffering

  1181. rather than

  1182. what does

  1183. God do

  1184. in response

  1185. to evil?

  1186. evil?

  1187. The question

  1188. we need

  1189. to consider

  1190. is what

  1191. does suffering

  1192. or further

  1193. evil,

  1194. what does

  1195. it do

  1196. to you?

  1197. What does

  1198. it do

  1199. to us?

  1200. And what

  1201. it almost

  1202. instantly

  1203. does is

  1204. that it

  1205. causes us

  1206. to lose

  1207. our hope

  1208. in the

  1209. true,

  1210. living,

  1211. and active

  1212. God.

  1213. For this

  1214. message,

  1215. I spent

  1216. some time

  1217. reading this

  1218. terrific book,

  1219. Raging

  1220. with Compassion,

  1221. pastoral

  1222. responses to

  1223. the problem

  1224. of evil

  1225. by a man

  1226. named John

  1227. Swinton.

  1228. I found

  1229. it to be

  1230. extremely

  1231. helpful.

  1232. And he

  1233. says,

  1234. quote,

  1235. above all

  1236. else,

  1237. what evil

  1238. does is

  1239. to separate

  1240. human beings

  1241. from their

  1242. primary source

  1243. of hope,

  1244. God.

  1245. The problem

  1246. of evil

  1247. is its

  1248. propensity

  1249. to tear

  1250. human beings

  1251. asunder

  1252. from their

  1253. identity

  1254. and purpose

  1255. as creatures

  1256. made in the

  1257. image of God

  1258. and loved

  1259. by God

  1260. beyond all

  1261. things.

  1262. beyond all

  1263. things.

  1264. Remember,

  1265. friends,

  1266. that it

  1267. is,

  1268. as we

  1269. say in

  1270. our series

  1271. title,

  1272. We Believe,

  1273. the Apostles'

  1274. Creed reminds

  1275. us that we

  1276. are not

  1277. alone.

  1278. Yes,

  1279. we live in

  1280. the presence

  1281. of evil

  1282. and suffering,

  1283. but this

  1284. place belongs

  1285. to God.

  1286. God.

  1287. This

  1288. creation

  1289. is sustained

  1290. by him

  1291. and will

  1292. ultimately

  1293. be redeemed

  1294. by him.

  1295. A man

  1296. who experienced

  1297. severe suffering

  1298. once said,

  1299. I consider

  1300. that our

  1301. present sufferings

  1302. are not worth

  1303. comparing with

  1304. the glory

  1305. that will be

  1306. revealed in

  1307. us,

  1308. for the creation

  1309. waits in eager

  1310. expectation for

  1311. the children of

  1312. God to be

  1313. revealed.

  1314. For the creation

  1315. was subjected

  1316. to frustration,

  1317. not by its

  1318. own choice,

  1319. but by the

  1320. will of the

  1321. one who

  1322. subjected it,

  1323. in hope that

  1324. the creation

  1325. itself will be

  1326. liberated from

  1327. its bondage to

  1328. decay and

  1329. brought into

  1330. the freedom and

  1331. glory of the

  1332. children of God.

  1333. The Apostle

  1334. Paul wrote

  1335. this.

  1336. You see,

  1337. Paul reminds

  1338. us that

  1339. through Christ

  1340. the creation

  1341. is being

  1342. redeemed.

  1343. John Swinton

  1344. adds,

  1345. all suffering

  1346. and death

  1347. has been

  1348. atoned for

  1349. and indeed

  1350. conquered in

  1351. the sacrifice

  1352. of Christ

  1353. in spite of

  1354. the continuing

  1355. presence of

  1356. evil and

  1357. suffering.

  1358. So, my

  1359. brothers and

  1360. sisters, we

  1361. can be assured

  1362. that God

  1363. sits in

  1364. solidarity with

  1365. us and his

  1366. presence is

  1367. with us in

  1368. the midst of

  1369. suffering.

  1370. We have this

  1371. living and

  1372. real hope

  1373. of what is

  1374. to come

  1375. because of

  1376. the risen

  1377. Jesus.

  1378. Jesus.

  1379. And not

  1380. only do

  1381. we now

  1382. have the

  1383. joy of

  1384. receiving the

  1385. free gift of

  1386. Jesus in

  1387. the midst of

  1388. our and our

  1389. neighbours'

  1390. suffering,

  1391. but we can

  1392. be assured

  1393. that the

  1394. Lord is at

  1395. work making

  1396. the world

  1397. right.

  1398. He is at

  1399. work today

  1400. making the

  1401. world right.

  1402. Turning to

  1403. perhaps one of

  1404. the boldest

  1405. statements in

  1406. the Old

  1407. Testament falls

  1408. within Psalm

  1409. 33, this

  1410. morning's

  1411. reading.

  1412. Did you see

  1413. it?

  1414. In verse

  1415. 5?

  1416. The Lord

  1417. loves righteousness

  1418. and justice.

  1419. The earth is

  1420. full of his

  1421. unfailing love.

  1422. In the

  1423. original context,

  1424. the people

  1425. hearing this

  1426. knew all

  1427. too well

  1428. injustice and

  1429. suffering.

  1430. It was their

  1431. daily experience.

  1432. And yet,

  1433. this is a

  1434. declaration that

  1435. in a world

  1436. where the

  1437. Lord is

  1438. almighty,

  1439. all-powerful,

  1440. he actively

  1441. loves pursuing

  1442. making things

  1443. right.

  1444. You see,

  1445. in the context

  1446. of brokenness

  1447. and evil

  1448. actions of

  1449. men and

  1450. women in

  1451. the world,

  1452. we see God

  1453. working today

  1454. to bring all

  1455. things in

  1456. alignment with

  1457. his perfect

  1458. will.

  1459. And we

  1460. also learn

  1461. something about

  1462. God's heart.

  1463. We actually

  1464. discover something

  1465. about God's

  1466. heart.

  1467. Christopher

  1468. Wright says

  1469. again about

  1470. Psalm 33

    Psalms 33:5

  1471. verse 5

  1472. revealing,

  1473. The justice

  1474. of God

  1475. is the

  1476. justice

  1477. of the

  1478. God

  1479. who sees

  1480. and hears

  1481. the cry

  1482. of the

  1483. weak and

  1484. oppressed,

  1485. cares about

  1486. them,

  1487. and takes

  1488. action on

  1489. their behalf.

  1490. At IJM,

  1491. over the last

  1492. 22 years,

  1493. we have seen

  1494. God doing

  1495. this.

  1496. 50,000

  1497. people rescued

  1498. from violence

  1499. and slavery,

  1500. millions more

  1501. protected by

  1502. strengthened

  1503. justice

  1504. systems,

  1505. all through

  1506. the power

  1507. of God

  1508. revealed in

  1509. his children

  1510. who see

  1511. another kingdom,

  1512. a kingdom

  1513. of light,

  1514. truth,

  1515. and justice.

  1516. But brothers

  1517. and sisters,

  1518. can I stress

  1519. again this

  1520. point?

  1521. Answering the

  1522. question,

  1523. is God

  1524. really

  1525. almighty,

  1526. is not an

  1527. intellectual

  1528. exercise.

  1529. the challenge

  1530. is, how

  1531. can we,

  1532. as the

  1533. community

  1534. here,

  1535. live faithfully

  1536. despite the

  1537. presence of

  1538. evil?

  1539. How can

  1540. we, as a

  1541. community of

  1542. believers from

  1543. all nations,

  1544. who gather in

  1545. this place now

  1546. called Chatswood,

  1547. create a

  1548. community within

  1549. which the

  1550. impacts of

  1551. evil and

  1552. suffering can

  1553. be absorbed,

  1554. resisted,

  1555. and transformed

  1556. as we await

  1557. for Christ's

  1558. return?

  1559. So, we

  1560. could spend

  1561. months in

  1562. this topic,

  1563. but we have a

  1564. short time,

  1565. and I don't

  1566. want to,

  1567. I don't,

  1568. I don't want

  1569. to, I

  1570. don't want

  1571. to, I

  1572. suppose,

  1573. go too

  1574. quickly,

  1575. too fast.

  1576. What we've

  1577. explored today

  1578. is a heavy

  1579. subject,

  1580. a heavy and

  1581. weighty matter,

  1582. but the

  1583. following

  1584. suggestions

  1585. come from

  1586. a place

  1587. that I

  1588. pray will

  1589. build and

  1590. restore and

  1591. strengthen our

  1592. hope, and

  1593. most importantly,

  1594. our love for

  1595. the Lord.

  1596. And I say

  1597. the love,

  1598. your love for

  1599. the Lord,

  1600. because in

  1601. the last few

  1602. years, in

  1603. the joy of the

  1604. ministry that I've

  1605. been able to

  1606. serve in at

  1607. IJM, I can

  1608. absolutely say

  1609. that my love

  1610. for the Lord

  1611. has skyrocketed

  1612. in the midst

  1613. of daily

  1614. readings of

  1615. people being

  1616. trafficked,

  1617. forced labour,

  1618. online sexual

  1619. exploitation of

  1620. children, and

  1621. yet my love

  1622. for the Lord

  1623. and what he

  1624. is doing,

  1625. and what he

  1626. has done,

  1627. and what he

  1628. will do,

  1629. has grown,

  1630. and grown,

  1631. and grown.

  1632. But always

  1633. in the

  1634. community of

  1635. spiritual

  1636. formation.

  1637. So in the

  1638. midst of

  1639. resisting evil,

  1640. our ability

  1641. to love God

  1642. and continue

  1643. finding ways

  1644. to love God

  1645. will be our

  1646. primary mode

  1647. of resistance.

  1648. In growing

  1649. in love for

  1650. God, we can

  1651. move to the

  1652. following Christian

  1653. practices, and

  1654. there's just a

  1655. couple of

  1656. suggestions that

  1657. I've got here,

  1658. and what I

  1659. mean is how

  1660. are our hearts

  1661. being formed?

  1662. How are your

  1663. hearts being

  1664. transformed,

  1665. modelled, and

  1666. shaped by the

  1667. Holy Spirit in

  1668. the midst of

  1669. this suffering?

  1670. So again,

  1671. borrowing from

  1672. Swinton, he

  1673. has a couple

  1674. of practices

  1675. which I think

  1676. have been

  1677. particularly

  1678. helpful, and

  1679. I've got a

  1680. small table

  1681. on the screen.

  1682. You may be

  1683. able to read

  1684. it, it's a

  1685. bit small,

  1686. hopefully you

  1687. can see some

  1688. of it.

  1689. The first

  1690. one is

  1691. listening to

  1692. silence.

  1693. Have you

  1694. ever been in

  1695. the presence of

  1696. someone suffering?

  1697. And can

  1698. you,

  1699. you sit

  1700. and listen?

  1701. Can you

  1702. be with

  1703. them in

  1704. the silence?

  1705. Something that

  1706. often goes

  1707. unnoticed is

  1708. the silence of

  1709. Jesus, his

  1710. experience on

  1711. and leading up

  1712. to the cross.

  1713. Have you

  1714. noticed that

  1715. in Mark's

  1716. gospel?

  1717. Go home

  1718. today and

  1719. read the

  1720. last few

  1721. chapters,

  1722. because you

  1723. see Jesus'

  1724. ordeal lasted

  1725. roughly six

  1726. hours, and

  1727. yet in that

  1728. whole time,

  1729. we only

  1730. have seven

  1731. sentences that

  1732. we hear from

  1733. him.

  1734. When he

  1735. speaks,

  1736. though, his

  1737. words are

  1738. powerful and

  1739. compassionate.

  1740. There's

  1741. something in

  1742. that silence,

  1743. the weight of

  1744. the suffering,

  1745. and friends,

  1746. we must learn

  1747. the practice of

  1748. listening to

  1749. silences.

  1750. Jesus.

  1751. As we

  1752. listen to the

  1753. silence of

  1754. Jesus, we

  1755. recognize that

  1756. the sufferer's

  1757. experience of

  1758. distance from

  1759. God is not

  1760. necessarily a

  1761. mark of

  1762. faithlessness.

  1763. Rather, it is

  1764. an experience

  1765. closely identified

  1766. with the

  1767. experience of

  1768. Christ on

  1769. the cross.

  1770. And that's

  1771. okay, to

  1772. be in that

  1773. place, to

  1774. pray in

  1775. that place.

  1776. Speaking of

  1777. prayer, the

  1778. next point,

  1779. lament.

  1780. Not often

  1781. practiced in

  1782. the modern

  1783. church, but

  1784. throughout the

  1785. Psalms, lament

  1786. has a purpose

  1787. and an end

  1788. point beyond

  1789. the simple

  1790. expression of

  1791. pain to

  1792. God and

  1793. saying, God

  1794. is so painful,

  1795. it's more

  1796. than that.

  1797. It's actually

  1798. an act of

  1799. reconciliation

  1800. with and a

  1801. deeper love

  1802. of God.

  1803. As

  1804. Christians, when

  1805. we lament,

  1806. we locate

  1807. and interpret

  1808. our sufferings

  1809. within the

  1810. narrative of

  1811. the life,

  1812. death, and

  1813. resurrection of

  1814. Jesus.

  1815. Lament gives

  1816. voice to

  1817. suffering and

  1818. provides a

  1819. faithful language

  1820. through which

  1821. we can bring

  1822. our pain before

  1823. God.

  1824. Look at

  1825. Psalm 75,

  1826. look at

  1827. Psalm 79,

  1828. look at

  1829. Psalm 88,

  1830. Psalm 13,

  1831. it's all

  1832. there,

  1833. allowing us

  1834. to speak

  1835. to God

  1836. out of

  1837. our pain.

  1838. Point

  1839. three,

  1840. forgiveness.

  1841. The German

  1842. pastor Bonhoeffer

  1843. explains that

  1844. suffering is a

  1845. mode of

  1846. sharing in,

  1847. that forgiveness

  1848. is a mode of

  1849. sharing in the

  1850. suffering of

  1851. Christ.

  1852. Forgiving

  1853. sins is the

  1854. Christian,

  1855. is the

  1856. Christ

  1857. suffering

  1858. required of

  1859. his disciples.

  1860. It is

  1861. required of

  1862. all Christians.

  1863. All Christians

  1864. are to

  1865. forgive.

  1866. And forgiveness

  1867. is perhaps one

  1868. of the most

  1869. radical gifts

  1870. God calls

  1871. us to

  1872. as we

  1873. struggle to

  1874. resist the

  1875. evil and

  1876. suffering around

  1877. us.

  1878. And I've

  1879. seen this in

  1880. the cases of

  1881. IJM where

  1882. a perpetrator

  1883. of sexual

  1884. violence to

  1885. a child,

  1886. where that

  1887. person has

  1888. been somehow

  1889. miraculously

  1890. transformed in

  1891. the process of

  1892. the trial and

  1893. has sought

  1894. forgiveness.

  1895. They're about

  1896. to be sent

  1897. to jail for

  1898. 20 years.

  1899. How do I

  1900. even deal

  1901. with that?

  1902. It's too

  1903. heavy, it's

  1904. too hard.

  1905. But yet,

  1906. God works

  1907. even in

  1908. those most

  1909. despised

  1910. sometimes.

  1911. Point

  1912. for number

  1913. four,

  1914. thoughtfulness.

  1915. Friends,

  1916. often reflect,

  1917. let us pray,

  1918. as Paul says

  1919. in Romans

  1920. 12, that

  1921. we be

  1922. transformed by

  1923. the renewing

  1924. of your

  1925. mind.

  1926. In a

  1927. world where

  1928. thoughtlessness

  1929. allows for

  1930. so much

  1931. evil and

  1932. suffering,

  1933. to carry

  1934. on just

  1935. unhindered,

  1936. without

  1937. thinking,

  1938. no one

  1939. even

  1940. thinking,

  1941. how can

  1942. we allow

  1943. the Holy

  1944. Spirit to

  1945. form and

  1946. transform our

  1947. values and

  1948. our thoughts?

  1949. The phone

  1950. is a classic

  1951. experience of

  1952. this.

  1953. It just

  1954. leads to

  1955. thoughtlessness.

  1956. forgiveness.

  1957. The Word

  1958. of God

  1959. inspires the

  1960. renewing of

  1961. our minds.

  1962. Point

  1963. number five,

  1964. the church

  1965. is called to

  1966. share everything

  1967. we have with

  1968. the stranger,

  1969. because everything

  1970. that we have is

  1971. not our own.

  1972. Hospitality.

  1973. One of the

  1974. greatest gifts,

  1975. if you ever

  1976. experience someone's

  1977. hospitality and

  1978. they give you

  1979. hospitality,

  1980. it is a gift

  1981. from God.

  1982. It's so amazing

  1983. to experience that.

  1984. And it's

  1985. because it's

  1986. not theirs,

  1987. it's God's.

  1988. Everything is a

  1989. gift.

  1990. Life,

  1991. creation,

  1992. children,

  1993. it's all a

  1994. gift.

  1995. And when we

  1996. think of

  1997. hospitality,

  1998. we think of

  1999. friendship.

  2000. And you

  2001. see,

  2002. suffering,

  2003. and particularly

  2004. suffering that

  2005. is evil,

  2006. that is

  2007. inspired by

  2008. evil,

  2009. separates us

  2010. not only from

  2011. God, but

  2012. also from one

  2013. another.

  2014. It creates

  2015. distance from

  2016. each other.

  2017. So let us

  2018. not allow

  2019. evil to

  2020. present us

  2021. loving the

  2022. stranger in

  2023. our midst

  2024. in the

  2025. church,

  2026. in Chatswood,

  2027. and in the

  2028. wider world.

  2029. So let me

  2030. close this

  2031. with a

  2032. prayer,

  2033. Psalm 33

  2034. and Psalm

  2035. 10.

  2036. And then I

  2037. want us to

  2038. move into a

  2039. time of

  2040. stillness as

  2041. we approach

  2042. God and

  2043. think of what

  2044. He has called

  2045. us to do

  2046. today together.

  2047. So would

  2048. you pray

  2049. with me?

  2050. And then

  2051. we're going

  2052. to have a

  2053. time of

  2054. just some

  2055. solitude for

  2056. you to

  2057. consider this,

  2058. to bring it

  2059. before the

  2060. Lord, and

  2061. then Nick's

  2062. going to

  2063. lead us.

  2064. You,

  2065. Lord,

  2066. Lord,

  2067. you hear the

  2068. desire of the

  2069. afflicted.

  2070. You encourage

  2071. them, and

  2072. you listen to

  2073. their cry,

  2074. defending the

  2075. fatherless and

  2076. the oppressed,

  2077. so that mere

  2078. earthly mortals

  2079. will never

  2080. again strike

  2081. terror.

  2082. We wait in

  2083. hope for the

  2084. Lord.

  2085. He is our

  2086. help and our

  2087. shield.

  2088. in Him our

  2089. hearts rejoice,

  2090. for we trust

  2091. in His

  2092. holy name.

  2093. May your

  2094. unfailing love

  2095. be with us,

  2096. Lord,

  2097. even as we

  2098. put our

  2099. hope in

  2100. you.

  2101. Amen.

  2102. Amen.

  2103. Amen.

  2104. Amen.

  2105. Amen.

  2106. Amen.

  2107. Amen.

  2108. Amen.

  2109. Amen.
