  1. Jack and Grace met through a mutual friend.

  2. From day one, they seemed to be perfect for each other.

  3. Grace was everything that Jack had always wanted.

  4. She was beautiful and outgoing and caring,

  5. always there when Jack needed her.

  6. For the first...

  7. I might get one of those other microphones, is that alright?

  8. Grace was beautiful, outgoing and caring.

  9. She was always there for whatever Jack needed her.

  10. For the first five months, they were just inseparable.

  11. Jack could hardly think of anything but Grace.

  12. He didn't need to look further.

  13. He told his friends.

  14. He said, she's the one.

  15. Now, almost three years have passed,

  16. and Jack still enjoys the comfort and the familiarity of being with Grace.

  17. But the spark's gone.

  18. Grace's flaws are just a little bit more obvious.

  19. He's not sure he finds her as attractive as he once did.

  20. And he's beginning to resent all the time that she wants to spend with him.

  21. One day, when she asks if they can define the nature of their relationship,

  22. Jack blows up.

  23. We're together, aren't we?

  24. He says angrily.

  25. Why is that not enough for you?

  26. Obviously, Jack isn't ready for commitment.

  27. He's not sure he ever will be,

  28. nor ever wants to be.

  29. I wonder if you've ever been in a relationship like that.

  30. I wonder if you know of people who are in relationships like that.

  31. I can think of a couple.

  32. Let me say, if you are in a relationship like that,

  33. that is not God's purpose for your life.

  34. God wants you to be in a relationship

  35. defined by both passion and commitment.

  36. And the reality is,

  37. there are millions of Jacks

  38. walking around on the face of the earth today.

  39. But before I go on any further,

  40. let me just give you one more piece of information

  41. that you should know.

  42. Grace isn't a girl.

  43. Grace is a church.

  44. And this, unfortunately,

  45. is the let's define the nature relationship talk.

  46. The ethic of personal autonomy

  47. shapes the minds,

  48. the expectations,

  49. and the worldviews of most Australians.

  50. And regrettably,

  51. this ethic has permeated

  52. the Australian church.

  53. There is little,

  54. in fact,

  55. it's not just the Australian church

  56. in terms of the culture.

  57. It's one of the things

  58. that's happening with this pandemic

  59. at the moment

  60. as to why places like Singapore

  61. and Hong Kong

  62. can contain it so well.

  63. But in the Western world,

  64. it explodes.

  65. In our minds,

  66. there is little thought

  67. given to our statement

  68. from the Apostles' Creed today.

  69. I believe in

  70. one holy,

  71. Catholic,

  72. and apostolic church

  73. and the communion of saints.

  74. Now,

  75. if you've just joined us

  76. today,

  77. then we're working our way

  78. through the ancient statement

  79. of Christian belief

  80. called the Apostles' Creed.

  81. And this short statement

  82. captures the way

  83. that Christians view God,

  84. the world,

  85. the life,

  86. future.

  87. It's our worldview,

  88. if you like.

  89. And so today,

  90. I'm picking up

  91. what Christians believe

  92. about the church.

  93. I've got three things

  94. I want us to explore.

  95. If you've got a phone

  96. or an iPad

  97. or a handout in front of you,

  98. you'll see there

  99. three main points.

  100. What is the church?

  101. What's the purpose

  102. of the church?

  103. And how to be

  104. a purposeful church member?

  105. So what's the first point?

  106. What is the church?

  107. The word church

  108. in our New Testament

  109. comes from the Greek word

  110. ecclesia.

  111. It's used just under 80 times

  112. in the New Testament

  113. and only on three occasions

  114. in the New Testament

  115. is the word ecclesia

  116. not translated

  117. into the English word church.

  118. For instance,

  119. in Acts 19,

  120. an idol-making silversmith

  121. named Demetrius

  122. whips the whole city up

  123. into a riot

  124. because too many

  125. of his customers

  126. were turning from idolatry

  127. to faith in the Lord Jesus

  128. and therefore not buying

  129. his produce.

  130. And next thing you know,

  131. there's this large crowd

  132. that's gathered

  133. and it says

  134. in Acts 19,

  135. 32,

  136. the assembly

  137. was in confusion.

  138. Some were shouting

  139. one thing,

  140. some another

  141. and most people

  142. didn't even know

  143. why they were there.

  144. So it seems like

  145. a sensible kind of mob really.

  146. The word assembly there

  147. is the Greek word

  148. ecclesia.

  149. The word church

  150. at its core

  151. simply refers to

  152. a crowd

  153. of people

  154. gathered together.

  155. Sometimes in the New Testament,

  156. churches used to

  157. refer to the

  158. gathering of Christians

  159. around God

  160. in heaven.

  161. Theologians refer to this

  162. as the invisible church.

  163. Everyone

  164. who knows Jesus

  165. from every time

  166. and

  167. place,

  168. those who are alive

  169. and those who are dead

  170. are gathered

  171. spiritually

  172. in God's presence,

  173. united in Jesus,

  174. magnifying God.

  175. That's the invisible church.

  176. And if you are in Jesus now,

  177. if you're a Christian,

  178. spiritually,

  179. you're connected

  180. to that universal church

  181. currently gathering

  182. in the throne room

  183. around God.

  184. That's the invisible church.

  185. mostly,

  186. however,

  187. the words

  188. in the New Testament

  189. refer to the

  190. local church

  191. gathered in a particular

  192. place,

  193. like the church

  194. that gathers

  195. on the corner of

  196. Fuller's Road

  197. and View Street,

  198. Chatswood.

  199. The local church.

  200. Us.

  201. This is the church

  202. visible.

  203. never

  204. in the New Testament

  205. is the

  206. word

  207. ecclesia

  208. used

  209. to describe

  210. a location,

  211. a building,

  212. or an institution,

  213. or even

  214. a collection

  215. of local churches.

  216. And so,

  217. you could say,

  218. well,

  219. the church is just

  220. a mob

  221. on one level.

  222. But,

  223. the church

  224. is not just

  225. any mob

  226. or crowd

  227. gathered together.

  228. The Greek word

  229. ecclesia

  230. is made from

  231. two other

  232. Greek words

  233. and joined together.

  234. These words

  235. mean

  236. to call

  237. out.

  238. The word

  239. church

  240. really refers

  241. to those

  242. called out

  243. by God,

  244. called out

  245. by God,

  246. joined

  247. together

  248. as his

  249. people,

  250. the followers

  251. of his

  252. son,

  253. Jesus.

  254. And

  255. Matthew 18,

  256. which Peter

  257. read out to us,

  258. is where we see

  259. the foundation

  260. of the church.

  261. We see this

  262. theology

  263. starting there.

  264. This is

  265. what separates

  266. this particular

  267. gathering of people

  268. from all other

  269. gatherings of people.

  270. Matthew 16,

  271. 13 to 19,

  272. people,

  273. Jesus

  274. asks his

  275. disciples,

  276. who do

  277. people say I am?

  278. And they come up

  279. with all sorts

  280. of different

  281. answers.

  282. Jesus says,

  283. well,

  284. what about you?

  285. And Peter

  286. confesses the

  287. identity

  288. of who

  289. Jesus is.

  290. Peter says

  291. that Jesus

  292. is more than

  293. a prophet,

  294. he's more

  295. than a teacher,

  296. he is

  297. the son

  298. of the living

  299. God,

  300. the Messiah.

  301. He is

  302. the promised

  303. seed of the

  304. woman from

  305. Genesis 3.

  306. And Jesus

  307. then responds

  308. with an

  309. announcement

  310. that will

  311. change the

  312. course of

  313. human history.

  314. He says,

  315. upon

  316. Peter's

  317. word,

  318. not

  319. Peter the

  320. person,

  321. but upon

  322. his word,

  323. his confession,

  324. he will

  325. build his

  326. church,

  327. his gathering.

  328. Why is

  329. Peter's

  330. word not

  331. Peter the

  332. person?

  333. Because the

  334. whole context

  335. tells you

  336. it's about

  337. who Jesus

  338. is,

  339. not who

  340. Peter is,

  341. it's about

  342. the identity

  343. of Jesus.

  344. Who do

  345. people say

  346. I am?

  347. And in the

  348. very next

  349. section,

  350. Peter gets

  351. it totally

  352. wrong and

  353. tries to

  354. stop Jesus

  355. from going

  356. on the

  357. cross in

  358. the first

  359. place.

  360. So Peter

  361. hasn't

  362. fully

  363. grasped it.

  364. Upon

  365. Peter's

  366. confession,

  367. he will

  368. build his

  369. church.

  370. Where

  371. Peter's

  372. confession

  373. of the

  374. true

  375. identity

  376. of Jesus

  377. Christ

  378. is found,

  379. the church

  380. is found.

  381. Where

  382. this

  383. confession

  384. is

  385. proclaimed,

  386. you find

  387. the communion

  388. of saints.

  389. Entrance

  390. into God's

  391. church,

  392. church,

  393. his crowd,

  394. his mob

  395. begins

  396. with the

  397. confession

  398. that Jesus

  399. Christ is

  400. Lord,

  401. Son of

  402. the living

  403. God.

  404. All who

  405. make that

  406. confession,

  407. by God's

  408. grace,

  409. become his

  410. people and

  411. unite themselves

  412. to Christ

  413. and his

  414. body,

  415. the church.

  416. It's by

  417. God's grace

  418. because Peter's

  419. confession

  420. was gifted

  421. to him

  422. by God

  423. himself,

  424. as Jesus

  425. said.

  426. This all

  427. means that

  428. when a

  429. church

  430. fails to

  431. hold to

  432. this truth

  433. and declare

  434. this truth

  435. and embody

  436. this truth,

  437. they forfeit

  438. their status

  439. as a

  440. church of

  441. Christ.

  442. And they

  443. become a

  444. mob,

  445. a crowd.

  446. As

  447. theologian

  448. J.R.

  449. Packer

  450. puts it

  451. in his

  452. very short

  453. book,

  454. Affirming

  455. the Apostles

  456. Creed,

  457. he says,

  458. the church

  459. is a

  460. supernatural

  461. society

  462. of God's

  463. redeemed

  464. and baptized

  465. people,

  466. looking back

  467. to Christ's

  468. first coming

  469. with gratitude

  470. and on to

  471. his second

  472. coming with

  473. hope.

  474. That's the

  475. first point,

  476. that's what the

  477. church is.

  478. So what's the

  479. purpose of

  480. church?

  481. Matthew

  482. 16

  483. would also

  484. suggest the

  485. church has a

  486. specific purpose.

  487. It alludes to

  488. it in the

  489. second half of

  490. verse 18

  491. where we read,

  492. the gates of

  493. Hades will not

  494. overcome it,

  495. I will give you

  496. the keys of

  497. the kingdom of

  498. heaven,

  499. whatever you

  500. bind on earth

  501. you will be

  502. bound in

  503. heaven and

  504. whatever you

  505. loose on

  506. earth will be

  507. loosed in

  508. heaven.

  509. So Peter's

  510. confession

  511. insists that

  512. the church be

  513. built on the

  514. truth of the

  515. gospel,

  516. but Jesus

  517. also endows

  518. his body

  519. with an

  520. insurmountable

  521. power,

  522. a power that

  523. Satan himself

  524. cannot

  525. overturn

  526. even by

  527. death.

  528. And this

  529. authority is

  530. given to the

  531. church that

  532. the church

  533. might carry

  534. out its

  535. God-given

  536. duties and

  537. that is to

  538. shine the

  539. light of

  540. the glory

  541. of Jesus

  542. Christ to

  543. a lost

  544. and dying

  545. world.

  546. That's his

  547. purpose.

  548. So let's

  549. unpack that

  550. purpose a

  551. little bit.

  552. We'll see,

  553. and I want to

  554. jump into

  555. Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  556. 1.

  557. So if you've

  558. got your

  559. Bibles in

  560. front of you,

  561. you're going to

  562. run through

  563. some of

  564. Ephesians to

  565. see some of

  566. what God's

  567. intention is

  568. for his

  569. church.

  570. So Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:8

  571. 1 verse

  572. 8, we

  573. see, if

  574. you like,

  575. the end

  576. of the

  577. plan of

  578. the gathered

  579. church.

  580. With all

  581. wisdom and

  582. understanding,

  583. he made

  584. known to

  585. us the

  586. mystery of

  587. his will

  588. according to

  589. his good

  590. pleasure,

  591. which he

  592. purposed in

  593. Christ, to

  594. be put into

  595. effect when

  596. the times

  597. reach their

  598. fulfillment.

  599. Here it

  600. is, to

  601. bring unity

  602. to all

  603. things in

  604. heaven and

  605. on earth

  606. under

  607. Christ.

  608. That's the

  609. end of it

  610. all.

  611. That's the

  612. goal.

  613. That's where

  614. everything is

  615. going.

  616. Everything

  617. gathered

  618. together

  619. around

  620. Jesus.

  621. There's that

  622. word gathering

  623. again.

  624. Gathered

  625. together around

  626. Jesus.

  627. It's been

  628. God's plan

  629. all along.

  630. In the

  631. Garden of

  632. Eating,

  633. there's a

  634. real sense

  635. right at

  636. the beginning

  637. that things

  638. are gathered

  639. to God.

  640. He has

  641. made the

  642. garden and

  643. all is at

  644. peace and

  645. ordered and

  646. everything is

  647. in perfect

  648. relationship

  649. with God.

  650. And then

  651. the first

  652. people make

  653. the decision

  654. to live

  655. their way

  656. and make

  657. everything

  658. about them.

  659. And the

  660. Bible calls

  661. this attitude

  662. and this

  663. action sin.

  664. And the

  665. consequence of

  666. sin is that

  667. everything is

  668. disordered.

  669. There's no

  670. more harmony.

  671. There's no

  672. more peace.

  673. Relationship

  674. is broken.

  675. And where

  676. there was

  677. unity and

  678. closeness,

  679. now because

  680. of sin,

  681. there's

  682. distance and

  683. disunity.

  684. God judges

  685. sin by

  686. scattering

  687. his people.

  688. Scattering

  689. people from

  690. himself.

  691. And this is a

  692. principle that

  693. you'll see right

  694. throughout the

  695. entire Bible.

  696. Bible, when

  697. humanity sets

  698. itself up

  699. against God,

  700. he scatters

  701. them.

  702. Whenever

  703. humanity sets

  704. itself up

  705. against God,

  706. he scatters

  707. them.

  708. When he

  709. rescues them,

  710. he brings

  711. them to

  712. himself.

  713. He gathers

  714. them to

  715. himself.

  716. In

  717. Isaiah 11,

  718. 700 years

  719. before Jesus,

  720. Isaiah is

  721. looking forward

  722. to the day

  723. when everything

  724. is finally

  725. ordered and

  726. harmonious and

  727. peaceful and

  728. right relationship

  729. like it was in

  730. the beginning.

  731. And he refers

  732. to a particular

  733. person who

  734. will accomplish

  735. God's grand

  736. plan.

  737. God's grand

  738. and he calls

  739. the Messiah,

  740. a son of

  741. King David.

  742. And this is

  743. what he says

  744. in verse 12

  745. of Isaiah 11.

  746. He will

  747. raise a banner

  748. for the

  749. nations and

  750. gather the

  751. exiles of

  752. Israel.

  753. He will

  754. assemble the

  755. scattered people

  756. of Judea

  757. from the

  758. four quarters

  759. of the

  760. earth.

  761. And a

  762. little later

  763. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 56 chapter mention

  764. chapter 56,

  765. God declares

  766. that it's

  767. not just

  768. for his

  769. people,

  770. but this

  771. promise is

  772. expanded beyond

  773. Israel.

  774. When he says,

  775. I will gather

  776. still others

  777. to them

  778. besides those

  779. already gathered.

  780. And the

  781. climax of

  782. God's plan

  783. is revealed

  784. in Isaiah

  785. 66.

  786. And I,

  787. because of

  788. what they

  789. have planned

  790. and done,

  791. am about to

  792. come and

  793. gather the

  794. people of

  795. all nations

  796. and languages

  797. and they

  798. will come

  799. and see

  800. my glory.

  801. You see,

  802. God's

  803. plan

  804. is to

  805. gather

  806. people from

  807. all nations

  808. and tribes

  809. and languages

  810. and people

  811. groups and

  812. cultures to

  813. himself that

  814. they might

  815. see his

  816. glory and

  817. live

  818. forever.

  819. forever.

  820. And what

  821. Peter confesses

  822. in Matthew

  823. 16 is

  824. that Jesus

  825. is the

  826. one that

  827. Isaiah

  828. talked about.

  829. Jesus is

  830. the focal

  831. point of

  832. God's

  833. gathering of

  834. people that

  835. they might

  836. see the

  837. glory of

  838. God.

  839. Jesus is

  840. central to

  841. God's plan

  842. of bringing

  843. people back

  844. to each

  845. other and

  846. to their

  847. creator.

  848. And Ephesians

  849. 2, if you're

  850. working with

  851. through

  852. Ephesians

  853. with me,

  854. is the

  855. long-awaited

  856. plan being

  857. worked out

  858. with Jesus

  859. at the

  860. heart of

  861. it.

  862. Verse 11,

  863. we read,

  864. therefore,

  865. remember that

  866. formally,

  867. you who are

  868. Gentiles by

  869. birth and

  870. called the

  871. uncircumcised by

  872. those who

  873. call themselves

  874. circumcision,

  875. which is done

  876. in the body

  877. by human

  878. hands,

  879. remember that

  880. at that

  881. time you

  882. were separated

  883. from Christ,

  884. excluded from

  885. citizenship in

  886. Israel, and

  887. foreigners to

  888. the covenants

  889. of the promise

  890. without hope

  891. and without

  892. God in the

  893. world.

  894. What Paul

  895. does there in

  896. Ephesians 2

  897. is he highlights

  898. this massive

  899. division between

  900. Jews and

  901. Gentiles, but

  902. also between

  903. them and

  904. God.

  905. Deep, deep

  906. hostility.

  907. And then in

  908. the very next

  909. verse he shows

  910. how that

  911. hostility is

  912. overcome.

  913. Now in

  914. Christ Jesus,

  915. you who

  916. once were

  917. far away,

  918. scattered from

  919. God, have

  920. been brought

  921. near by the

  922. blood of

  923. Christ.

  924. For he

  925. himself is

  926. our peace,

  927. who has

  928. made the

  929. two groups

  930. one,

  931. destroyed the

  932. barrier, the

  933. dividing wall

  934. of hostility,

  935. by setting aside

  936. in his flesh

  937. the law with

  938. its commandments

  939. and regulations.

  940. His purpose

  941. was to create

  942. in himself

  943. one new

  944. humanity out

  945. of the two,

  946. thus making

  947. peace, and

  948. in one body

  949. to reconcile

  950. both of them

  951. to God

  952. through the

  953. cross by

  954. which he

  955. put to

  956. death their

  957. hostility.

  958. Sin and

  959. death and

  960. hostility between

  961. Jews and

  962. Gentiles is

  963. finally dealt

  964. with by the

  965. Messiah, the

  966. son of the

  967. living God,

  968. Jesus on a

  969. cross 2,000

  970. years ago.

  971. Jesus is the

  972. one who

  973. gathers these

  974. diverse groups

  975. of people

  976. together into

  977. one new

  978. humanity in

  979. relationship with

  980. their creator

  981. God.

  982. God's purpose in

  983. all of this?

  984. What is the

  985. idea?

  986. What's his

  987. plan?

  988. Ephesians 3,

  989. 10, read

  990. out to us by

  991. Tom.

  992. His intent

  993. was that now

  994. through the

  995. church, that's

  996. us, that word

  997. there, Ecclesia,

  998. is talking about

  999. us, local

  1000. gathering,

  1001. God's

  1002. God's

  1003. manifold

  1004. wisdom of

  1005. God should

  1006. be made

  1007. known to

  1008. the rulers

  1009. and the

  1010. authorities in

  1011. the heavenly

  1012. realms according

  1013. to his

  1014. eternal purpose

  1015. that he

  1016. accomplished in

  1017. Christ Jesus

  1018. our Lord.

  1019. God's great

  1020. and glorious

  1021. plan is to

  1022. bring a very

  1023. diverse group of

  1024. people together

  1025. and to himself

  1026. in such a

  1027. way that his

  1028. greatness and

  1029. his glory is

  1030. made known

  1031. everywhere

  1032. including the

  1033. heavenly realms.

  1034. There is a

  1035. sense where

  1036. God calls

  1037. over the

  1038. rulers and

  1039. the authorities

  1040. of the heavenly

  1041. realms, gets

  1042. them to look

  1043. over the

  1044. balcony of

  1045. heaven if

  1046. such a place

  1047. exists and

  1048. says look

  1049. at that,

  1050. look at

  1051. that.

  1052. See

  1053. St.

  1054. Paul's

  1055. Chatswood?

  1056. That is

  1057. what I've

  1058. been working

  1059. on for

  1060. all of

  1061. history.

  1062. My son

  1063. Jesus has

  1064. made that

  1065. possible.

  1066. United

  1067. Nations

  1068. can't do

  1069. it.

  1070. He's the

  1071. one who's

  1072. brought down

  1073. those dividing

  1074. walls of

  1075. hostility and

  1076. brought diverse

  1077. people together

  1078. and he

  1079. turns to

  1080. Satan,

  1081. hey,

  1082. enemy,

  1083. get over

  1084. here.

  1085. He says,

  1086. see that?

  1087. You cannot

  1088. prevail against

  1089. that.

  1090. You cannot

  1091. stop that.

  1092. My son is

  1093. building his

  1094. church out of

  1095. every tribe and

  1096. language and

  1097. peoples.

  1098. people.

  1099. And so let

  1100. me just

  1101. say,

  1102. as a

  1103. society of

  1104. individualistic

  1105. thinkers where

  1106. personal autonomy

  1107. rules and a

  1108. highest value,

  1109. this is very

  1110. important for us

  1111. to grasp.

  1112. Before

  1113. church

  1114. has

  1115. anything to

  1116. do with

  1117. you and

  1118. me,

  1119. before

  1120. church is

  1121. about us

  1122. serving one

  1123. another or

  1124. even before

  1125. church is

  1126. about us

  1127. learning more

  1128. about God,

  1129. it is about

  1130. him and his

  1131. glory.

  1132. It's why we

  1133. start with

  1134. singing and

  1135. singing in such

  1136. a way that we

  1137. actually believe

  1138. it.

  1139. this is so

  1140. fundamental for

  1141. us to grasp.

  1142. It's critical

  1143. even.

  1144. Before church

  1145. is about me

  1146. or about you

  1147. or about us,

  1148. it is about

  1149. God.

  1150. It is about

  1151. his design,

  1152. his plan for

  1153. all of time

  1154. and eternity.

  1155. A

  1156. multi-ethnic,

  1157. multi-generational,

  1158. socially,

  1159. socio-economically

  1160. diverse gathering

  1161. of people,

  1162. declaring that

  1163. Jesus is

  1164. Lord and

  1165. King for

  1166. the glory

  1167. of God

  1168. is the

  1169. reason

  1170. St.

  1171. Paul's

  1172. Chatswood

  1173. exists.

  1174. And it's

  1175. about more

  1176. and more

  1177. people being

  1178. added for

  1179. that purpose,

  1180. for the

  1181. glory of

  1182. God.

  1183. And all

  1184. of our

  1185. resources are

  1186. to be deployed

  1187. in that

  1188. direction.

  1189. this

  1190. building,

  1191. you've got

  1192. to get

  1193. this deep

  1194. down into

  1195. your souls.

  1196. This

  1197. building is

  1198. not a

  1199. church.

  1200. This

  1201. building is

  1202. a tool.

  1203. It is

  1204. nothing more

  1205. than a

  1206. tool.

  1207. It's a

  1208. resource to

  1209. help the

  1210. church,

  1211. us,

  1212. to pursue

  1213. its mission

  1214. for the

  1215. glory of

  1216. God.

  1217. God,

  1218. this

  1219. building is

  1220. not even

  1221. our

  1222. clubhouse

  1223. where we

  1224. gather.

  1225. It's not

  1226. about us

  1227. having a

  1228. nice place

  1229. for us to

  1230. gather and

  1231. facilities and

  1232. room to

  1233. spread out and

  1234. kick back and

  1235. enjoy.

  1236. It's our

  1237. mission

  1238. headquarters to

  1239. see God's

  1240. reason for

  1241. us gathering

  1242. fulfilled.

  1243. Okay.

  1244. number

  1245. three,

  1246. how to be a

  1247. purposeful church

  1248. member.

  1249. So how do we

  1250. as individuals

  1251. be members of

  1252. a church on

  1253. purpose?

  1254. Firstly,

  1255. let me say,

  1256. you don't

  1257. become a

  1258. member of

  1259. God's church

  1260. by completing

  1261. a membership

  1262. course or

  1263. going to a

  1264. Welcome Sunday

  1265. event.

  1266. Although I'm

  1267. not suggesting

  1268. you don't

  1269. go at

  1270. all.

  1271. you don't

  1272. become a

  1273. member of

  1274. a church

  1275. by sitting

  1276. in a pew

  1277. for a very

  1278. long time

  1279. either.

  1280. Longevity's

  1281. got nothing to

  1282. do with your

  1283. membership of

  1284. a church.

  1285. You become a

  1286. member of

  1287. God's church

  1288. by doing

  1289. what we saw

  1290. in Matthew

  1291. 16,

  1292. by repenting

  1293. of living

  1294. independent of

  1295. God, by

  1296. putting your

  1297. trust in the

  1298. Lord,

  1299. Jesus Christ

  1300. declaring that

  1301. he is the

  1302. son of the

  1303. living God

  1304. and receiving

  1305. the Holy Spirit

  1306. who unites you

  1307. with God and

  1308. all other

  1309. Christians from

  1310. time and

  1311. eternity.

  1312. That's how you

  1313. become a

  1314. member of his

  1315. church.

  1316. And that is

  1317. the fundamental

  1318. first step.

  1319. There will be

  1320. people, just to

  1321. emphasize this

  1322. point, there

  1323. will be people

  1324. in heaven who

  1325. have not done

  1326. a pathways,

  1327. a course,

  1328. who have

  1329. never been

  1330. to a

  1331. Welcome

  1332. Sunday

  1333. event, but

  1334. there won't

  1335. be anyone

  1336. in heaven who

  1337. hasn't repented

  1338. of their sins

  1339. and trusted in

  1340. Jesus Christ as

  1341. son of the

  1342. living God.

  1343. Not a single

  1344. one.

  1345. And potentially

  1346. you're here

  1347. today and

  1348. this is the

  1349. fundamental first

  1350. step that you

  1351. need to take.

  1352. and if that

  1353. is you, then

  1354. come to the

  1355. Welcome

  1356. Center.

  1357. We would

  1358. love to

  1359. speak to

  1360. you.

  1361. Secondly, and

  1362. this is going to

  1363. sound somewhat

  1364. ironic, being a

  1365. purposeful church

  1366. member means that

  1367. you gather because

  1368. that's what you've

  1369. been called to do.

  1370. You've been called

  1371. to gather.

  1372. together.

  1373. Because you are

  1374. spiritually gathered

  1375. by God.

  1376. One of the core

  1377. values that helps

  1378. us think about the

  1379. sort of gathering

  1380. that we are and

  1381. inspire to be is

  1382. our core value of

  1383. treasuring Jesus

  1384. together.

  1385. It says this,

  1386. having been led

  1387. individually by the

  1388. Spirit of God to

  1389. receive Christ Jesus

  1390. Lord, Savior and

  1391. supreme treasure of

  1392. our lives, we now

  1393. most solemnly and

  1394. joyfully enter into

  1395. covenant with one

  1396. another as one body

  1397. in Christ.

  1398. We believe the

  1399. people whom Jesus

  1400. has called into

  1401. relationship with

  1402. himself are his

  1403. church and not an

  1404. institution or a

  1405. building.

  1406. In an age of

  1407. individualism, we

  1408. value vigilance and

  1409. accountability.

  1410. In treasuring Jesus

  1411. together.

  1412. In Ephesians, Paul

  1413. spends extensive

  1414. time on what God's

  1415. new humanity, his

  1416. gathering, his

  1417. church looks like in

  1418. their life together.

  1419. And our value of

  1420. treasuring Jesus

  1421. together is a value

  1422. that tries to capture

1423. some of that in terms

1424. of the quality of who

  1425. we are as God's

  1426. people.

  1427. It's about our life

  1428. together.

  1429. It's about our

  1430. relationships.

  1431. It's about our

  1432. togetherness as a

  1433. dynamic spiritual

  1434. community under the

  1435. lordship of Jesus.

  1436. It says things like

1437. this as a church, we

  1438. are committed to

  1439. making corporate

  1440. worship a weekly

  1441. priority, unless of

  1442. course I shut them

  1443. all down.

  1444. In the Bible, to

  1445. magnify God always

  1446. requires the regular

  1447. gathering of God's

  1448. people.

1449. And so, if or maybe

  1450. when that decision is

1451. made for us not to

1452. gather, that is not the

  1453. normal pattern for us.

1454. That will never be the

  1455. normal pattern for us.

1456. It will be out of love

  1457. for our community.

  1458. And we're working on

  1459. specific ways where we

  1460. can still gather, even

  1461. if it's via a screen, in

  1462. order to declare the

1463. praises of God as his

1464. people and to hear from

  1465. him.

1466. So I want to ask you,

1467. first of all, have you

  1468. ever calculated how many

1469. gatherings you miss in a

  1470. year?

  1471. Ever done that?

  1472. Regular attendance now for

  1473. churches has become

  1474. somewhere between 30 and

  1475. 40 percent

  1476. attendance

  1477. across a year.

  1478. Now, I don't need a rule

  1479. here.

1480. And I'm not looking to

  1481. implement a rule here

1482. because you'll just go to

  1483. the next church that

  1484. doesn't have that rule.

1485. The only way for there to

  1486. be radical change is

  1487. radical change in the

  1488. heart.

1489. What we need to see is the

  1490. greatness and the

1491. gracious plan of a great

  1492. and a gracious God.

1493. We need to see that all of

  1494. history is about God's

1495. glory and the church of

1496. Jesus Christ is central to

  1497. that.

1498. We need to see what it

1499. cost him to gather us

1500. together and to gather us

  1501. to himself.

  1502. Frankly, nothing else will

  1503. motivate us.

  1504. Second point, under point

  1505. three, is to build

  1506. supernatural community.

  1507. Treasuring Jesus

1508. together not only says that

  1509. we value being together,

1510. but how we value being

  1511. together.

  1512. We're committed to

  1513. gathering in small

  1514. groups, remembering one

1515. another in prayer and a

  1516. aiding one another in

  1517. sickness and distress and

  1518. cultivating sympathy,

  1519. Christian sympathy and joy

1520. and being slow to take

  1521. offense and always seeking

  1522. reconciliation and mindful

1523. of the need and of the

1524. fact that command of our

  1525. Savior to secure it

  1526. without delay.

1527. We want to be a church

  1528. that's welcoming of people

  1529. of every blackout.

1530. We don't want to have

  1531. cliquishness in our groups.

1532. We want to purge our lives

1533. of sin that cause division.

  1534. We want to pursue

  1535. increasingly visible and

  1536. authentic practical ways of

1537. loving each other and our

  1538. community.

1539. But frankly, the best thing to

1540. do is to look at what the

1541. New Testament says about our

  1542. supernatural life together.

  1543. John 13, a new commandment I

  1544. give you.

  1545. This is Jesus.

1546. Love one another as I have

1547. loved you so that you must love

  1548. one another.

1549. By all this, by this, all people

1550. will know that you are my

1551. disciples if you love one

  1552. another.

1553. Romans 12, be devoted to one

  1554. another in brotherly love.

1555. James, do not slander one

  1556. another.

  1557. Don't grumble against one

  1558. another.

1559. Confess your sins to each

  1560. other.

  1561. Pray for one another.

  1562. And that's just a snapshot.

1563. What is obvious from the New

1564. Testament is the prominence of

  1565. loving, Christ-exalting, other

  1566. person-centered personal

  1567. relationship in the local

  1568. church.

1569. There is no such thing as

  1570. isolated, individually sick,

  1571. meet-my-needs consumer

1572. Christianity in the Bible at

  1573. all.

1574. Not even a glimpse of it.

1575. You can't even play exegetical

1576. gymnastics and come to any form

  1577. of conclusion on that.

  1578. Anywhere.

1579. What we are seeking to do at

  1580. St. Paul's is build a gospel-

  1581. centered community.

1582. Another way of putting that is

1583. we are seeking to build a

  1584. supernatural community, not a

  1585. natural community.

1586. A natural community is where

1587. people feel connected because of

  1588. demographic closeness and

  1589. connectedness.

1590. They gravitate to each other and

1591. they find a sense of belonging

  1592. because they've got similarities

1593. and irrespective of whether the

1594. gospel is true or not, you can do

  1595. that.

  1596. Now, that's not a bad thing.

1597. All of my friends that I've got, I

1598. share common interests with them.

1599. Not a bad thing to have those

1600. connections and affinities here at

  1601. St. Paul's.

1602. But I want us to caution about

1603. thinking that somehow that that is

1604. the total sum of gospel community.

1605. At the end of the day, you can have

  1606. natural community without Jesus.

1607. The heavenly realms look on and see

1608. the wisdom of God when they gaze upon

  1609. supernatural community.

  1610. Gospel community.

1611. And so we seek diversity.

1612. We seek shared discomfort in all of our

  1613. corporate gatherings.

1614. This is the kind of community that

1615. could really only exist when Jesus

  1616. is Lord of all.

1617. And we have the indwelling power of

1618. the Holy Spirit to drive us away from

  1619. self-centeredness.

1620. It's when people who would not

1621. gravitate to each other or people

1622. groups who have open hostility towards

1623. one another are drawn together in

1624. peace and love because of the work of

1625. Jesus Christ in their hearts.

  1626. Thirdly, having said that,

1627. about that, third thing about being a

1628. purposeful church member is to

  1629. purposely fracture community.

  1630. Bear with me here.

1631. It is great to be part of a gospel

1632. community that God is growing.

1633. And one of the painful realities of God

1634. growing a community is that we have to

1635. keep fracturing in order to make space

1636. for others who are being welcomed in.

1637. We should see that as a joy.

1638. In the same way, I remember having one

1639. child and not sure how I was going to

  1640. work with two children.

1641. And then you discover the joy of having

1642. two and then a third.

  1643. And not sure how.

1644. It resulted in all kinds of different

  1645. changes.

1646. But the joy of welcoming more people in.

1647. And so we've got to be a church

  1648. that's building deep relationships,

1649. but also seeing that deep relationships

1650. in themselves are not the goal.

1651. People being connected to their God

  1652. is the goal.

1653. And therefore, we need to fracture some

1654. of those relationships to allow room for

  1655. more to come in.

1656. There are a few metaphors that the Bible

1657. uses to describe the intimate way that

  1658. Jesus views his church.

1659. He calls it his family, his body, his bride.

1660. He loves his church and he gave himself

1661. over to death for it.

1662. He looks forward to the day when his bride,

1663. in all its perfection, will be presented to

1664. him and be with him forever.

1665. And as I said at the beginning,

1666. today is one of those commitment

  1667. conversations.

  1668. If you're a Christian,

1669. you have a crucial part in God's plan

  1670. for eternity.

1671. Your life, and I think this is what I want

1672. to get hopefully in showing you how the Bible,

1673. all the Bible views the idea of gathering

  1674. as his people.

1675. I want you to get this picture.

1676. Your life is so much bigger than a good job,

  1677. an understanding spouse,

1678. non-delinquent kids or even having kids,

1679. good friends and active social life.

1680. It is so much bigger than beautiful gardens

1681. and nice holidays and fashionable clothes.

  1682. If you're a Christian,

1683. you are part of something immense

  1684. that will never end.

1685. Something that began before you were born

1686. and continued long after you die.

  1687. God is rescuing fallen,

  1688. scattered humanity

1689. and gathering to him himself

  1690. and progressively shaping them

1691. into the likeness of his much-loved son,

  1692. Jesus.

1693. He gathers you to himself

1694. so that you may take part in his glory

1695. and find your joy in his glory.

1696. The church matters because God chose it

1697. to show and tell the universe

  1698. his wisdom and love.

1699. And this message is our world's only hope.

1700. And so we must fight the toxicity

1701. and the poison of modern church culture

1702. that says that you can walk this Christian life

  1703. without the church.

  1704. It is not true.

1705. Individualism not only betrays the church,

  1706. it betrays the gospel,

1707. it takes glory from God,

1708. it insinuates that the glorious good news

1709. of the Lord Jesus Christ

1710. is only about saving people,

1711. it's only a gospel of sin management,

1712. there is such a bigger story.

1713. God is creating an eternal people.

  1714. God's design throughout history

  1715. from beginning to end

1716. is about him creating an eternal people

1717. from every tribe, tongue, language and group.

1718. one people are people for his pleasure.

1719. So let me ask you,

1720. if I ask you to tell your story

  1721. of your journey to

  1722. and growth in

1723. faith in the Lord Jesus,

  1724. how central

1725. is the church to that story?

  1726. Amen.

  1727. Amen.

  1728. Amen.

  1729. Amen.
