  1. Hello, it is good to be with you today.

  2. Have you adjusted to self-isolation yet?

  3. Have you changed your routine?

  4. Are you now working at home, exercising on the floor of the lounge room in front of a workout video?

  5. Have you started doing homeschooling and maybe spending more time gardening?

  6. Are you used to not being allowed to go outside yet?

  7. And this past week I celebrated my 35th birthday.

  8. And it was a bit strange because I couldn't see anyone.

  9. And I kept speaking to people and people kept saying,

  10. I really look forward to when life goes back to normal.

  11. And I can come give you a hug and say happy birthday.

  12. And I love that idea.

  13. But have you found yourself saying similar things?

  14. Similar things like when it goes back to normal.

  15. When life goes back to how it was.

  16. I wonder if this is a problem for us.

  17. I wonder if we idolise how things were a couple of months ago.

  18. It's as if that time when we could go outside was perfect.

  19. Now it was definitely better.

  20. But there were still plenty of problems.

  21. Today we are coming to the end of our series, We Believe,

  22. as we look at what Christians believe from the Apostles' Creed.

  23. And today we're looking at the last two lines.

  24. That we believe in the resurrection of the dead.

  25. And that we believe in everlasting life.

  26. And today we're going to be challenged to not just look forward to life going back to normal.

  27. Back to how it was.

  28. Back to something better.

  29. For some of us, I'm sure we're loving hanging out at home.

  30. But for many others, surviving each day of the week is really tough.

  31. But we have something to look forward to that is better than life going back to normal.

  32. We're looking forward to something that won't break apart, that won't fade or be destroyed.

  33. We are looking forward to what God has prepared for us after death and for our life everlasting.

  34. So as we look at God's work today, let me pray.

  35. Dear Heavenly Father, as we hide at home to protect loved ones and those we don't know,

  36. Father, please be with us in isolation.

  37. Help us to look forward to what you have prepared for us in the future.

  38. Amen.

  39. The first thing we're going to look at today is that we believe in the resurrection of the dead.

  40. The New Testament shows that the hope that we have a full life after death.

  41. It is not a spiritual life or a life without a body.

  42. It's not a metaphor.

  43. But there's a future hope of life with a body.

  44. Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 4 that Jesus died and rose.

  45. And God will do the same for those who die.

  46. And Romans says that we have been united with him in his death.

  47. And we will certainly be raised with Jesus, just like he was.

  48. And Jesus says in John 11 that whoever believes in him, even though they die, will live.

  49. Jesus and the other New Testament writers fully believe that just as Jesus died and came back to life,

  50. so will those who believe in him die and come back to a physical life.

  51. Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 shows how central believing in the resurrection of the dead is.

  52. He says in 1 Corinthians 15 verse 3 that it is of first importance that Jesus died for our sins,

    1 Corinthians 15:3

  53. that he was buried and that he was raised.

  54. Because if Jesus wasn't raised, there is no hope for us.

  55. Verse 18,

  56. Then those who have also fallen asleep in Christ are lost.

  57. And we are to be pitied for thinking that we will come back to life from the dead.

  58. But, Paul says,

  59. But, that is not how it is, but,

  60. verse 20,

  61. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead.

  62. The first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

  63. For since death came through a man,

  64. the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.

  65. Adam, along with Eve, sinned,

  66. and death was the result.

  67. Jesus did not sin.

  68. And he was placed on a cross instead of us.

  69. And his resurrection means that eternal life is the result.

  70. We are going to celebrate this, this coming Sunday on Easter Day,

  71. where we remember that it is not just a story, but it is history.

  72. That God came himself and died for us on the cross.

  73. And three days later was raised to life everlasting.

  74. He was raised.

  75. People, hundreds of people saw him

  76. before he ascended to the right hand of the Father.

  77. He is the first fruit.

  78. He is the prototype of the resurrection for us.

  79. Because, as Paul says in Christ,

  80. all will be made alive.

  81. I think 1 Corinthians 15 is a really helpful reflection for us on the resurrection.

  82. Now, I've only touched on it briefly.

  83. Let me encourage you to read the rest of 1 Corinthians 15 after church today.

  84. But it is good for us in all seasons

  85. because it enters into the drama of our lives.

  86. We live and start with families

  87. and go to work

  88. and spend time with friends

  89. under the dread of death.

  90. It steadily walks towards us

  91. and to our loved ones.

  92. At the moment,

  93. our whole world is either in lockdown

  94. or heading to lockdown

  95. because we fear death.

  96. We are weak to it.

  97. Whilst not all who get coronavirus will die,

  98. it's spread,

  99. spreads fear,

  100. fear of death.

  101. Because we are weak,

  102. fleshly bodies,

  103. fearful of taking our last breath.

  104. And we've seen the response

  105. of plenty of people

  106. to go on a horde,

  107. trying to protect themselves

  108. for another day.

  109. But even when life does go back to normal,

  110. whether it's in a day

  111. or six months,

  112. we will still

  113. all fear

  114. and face death.

  115. Our hope for the future

  116. has to be bigger

  117. than death.

  118. The Apostle Peter

  119. wrote a letter to a church

  120. who was

  121. in a somewhat similar position.

  122. They were facing

  123. persecution and death

  124. and they were fearful

  125. of what was to come.

  126. And he encouraged them

  127. in this time of uncertainty.

  128. From 1 Peter 1, verse 3,

    1 Peter 1:3

  129. it says,

  130. Praise be to the God and Father

  131. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  132. In his great mercy

  133. he has given us new birth

  134. into a living hope

  135. through the resurrection

  136. of Jesus Christ

  137. from the dead.

  138. And into an inheritance

  139. that can never perish,

  140. spoil or fade.

  141. This inheritance

  142. is kept in heaven for you.

  143. God, in his great mercy,

  144. has given us hope

  145. in uncertain times.

  146. Resurrection from the dead

  147. like Jesus.

  148. And we have an inheritance

  149. that can never spoil

  150. like too much

  151. stocked food.

  152. It can't fade

  153. like our patients

  154. with our family

  155. and friends

  156. and housemates.

  157. It can't be stolen

  158. like toilet paper

  159. from an unguarded

  160. shopping trot.

  161. This is what Christians

  162. put their hope in.

  163. A resurrection

  164. that cannot spoil

  165. or fade or perish.

  166. after we die

  167. we will all be raised

  168. to the life

  169. of a physical body

  170. just like Jesus's.

  171. This is the hope

  172. that we have.

  173. We don't wait

  174. for a spiritual future

  175. but we are waiting

  176. for future bodies

  177. to be raised.

  178. But other than

  179. just having a body

  180. in this everlasting future,

  181. what does it actually

  182. look like

  183. to be in this future

  184. that God has prepared

  185. for us?

  186. Well, we come to

  187. the final part

  188. of the creed.

  189. The final line

  190. of the creed

  191. says that we believe

  192. in the everlasting life.

  193. And the New Testament

  194. paints a picture

  195. for us

  196. of what this

  197. everlasting life

  198. looks like.

  199. Jesus in John

    John 14 chapter mention

  200. chapter 14

  201. tells his disciples

  202. that he's going

  203. to God

  204. to prepare

  205. a house,

  206. to prepare

  207. a place

  208. for us.

  209. Jesus is preparing

  210. God's house

  211. for us

  212. for eternity.

  213. And in this chapter

  214. Jesus is potentially

  215. alluding

  216. to the types

  217. of houses

  218. that rich

  219. Roman rulers

  220. would have.

  221. They would have

  222. houses that had

  223. a central atrium

  224. and all around

  225. the atrium

  226. would be rooms.

  227. You know,

  228. a central space

  229. and then around

  230. the atrium

  231. would be different rooms.

  232. And so

  233. all of the bedrooms

  234. would connect

  235. into a central

  236. gathering area.

  237. So you could

  238. connect and gather

  239. with people

  240. very easily.

  241. And this is a picture

  242. of God

  243. that he doesn't

  244. just have a place

  245. for us

  246. but it's a place

  247. that is connected

  248. to everyone else.

  249. A place

  250. where there is

  251. community forever.

  252. A place

  253. where God

  254. is with us.

  255. And I am

  256. yearning for that.

  257. It is good

  258. to be standing

  259. with you today

  260. looking down

  261. a camera

  262. into your living

  263. room

  264. starting to

  265. wherever you

  266. are right now.

  267. It is good

  268. to be with you

  269. but I am

  270. yearning

  271. to be

  272. gathering with

  273. you in church

  274. together.

  275. This building

  276. is empty

  277. and I miss you.

  278. I miss

  279. gathering

  280. and singing

  281. loudly

  282. as a church

  283. and I am

  284. looking forward

  285. to that day

  286. again.

  287. But how much

  288. greater will it

  289. be

  290. when there will

  291. be nothing

  292. that can stop

  293. us from

  294. gathering

  295. together

  296. and praising

  297. God.

  298. Two passages

  299. from Revelation

  300. continue to

  301. paint what

  302. this everlasting

  303. life will look

  304. like.

  305. Revelation

  306. 21 shows us

  307. John's vision

  308. of heaven

  309. and God

  310. shows him

  311. and from

  312. verse 3

  313. it says

  314. I heard a loud

  315. voice from

  316. the throne

  317. saying

  318. look

  319. God's dwelling

  320. place is now

  321. among the people

  322. and he will

  323. dwell with them

  324. they will be

  325. his people

  326. and God

  327. himself will be

  328. with them

  329. and be their

  330. God.

  331. He will wipe

  332. every tear

  333. from their

  334. lives

  335. for there will

  336. be no more

  337. death

  338. or mourning

  339. or crying

  340. or pain.

  341. The old

  342. order of things

  343. has passed

  344. away.

  345. God himself

  346. will dwell

  347. with us

  348. in heaven.

  349. God has

  350. destroyed

  351. the old

  352. order of

  353. things.

  354. There will

  355. be no more

  356. pain or tears

  357. but God

  358. himself will

  359. be with us.

  360. John continues

  361. painting his

  362. picture of

  363. heaven in

  364. verse 18

  365. the wall

  366. was made

  367. of jasper

  368. and the

  369. city of

  370. pure gold

  371. as pure

  372. as glass.

  373. The foundation

  374. of the city

  375. walls were

  376. decorated with

  377. every kind

  378. of precious

  379. stone.

  380. The first

  381. foundation

  382. was jasper

  383. the second

  384. sapphire

  385. the third

  386. agate

  387. the fourth

  388. emerald

  389. the fifth

  390. onyx

  391. the sixth

  392. ruby

  393. the seventh

  394. chrysolite

  395. the eighth

  396. beryl

  397. the ninth

  398. topaz

  399. the tenth

  400. turquoise

  401. the eleventh

  402. jesson

  403. and the twelfth

  404. amethyst.

  405. The twelve

  406. gates

  407. the twelve

  408. pearls

  409. each gate

  410. made

  411. of a single

  412. pearl.

  413. The great

  414. streak of the

  415. city was

  416. of pure

  417. gold

  418. as pure

  419. as translucent

  420. glass.

  421. This is just

  422. an amazing

  423. picture of

  424. luxury and

  425. decadence of

  426. what the city

  427. of God is

  428. going to look

  429. like.

  430. I love the

  431. picture of the

  432. street of gold

  433. it's like it's

  434. polished so

  435. much that it's

  436. translucent and

  437. see-through.

  438. This is a

  439. picture of the

  440. greatest city

  441. ever where you

  442. can even put

  443. precious stones

  444. in the wall

  445. without fear of

  446. them being

  447. stolen.

  448. It's a

  449. wonderful picture

  450. of our

  451. everlasting

  452. future.

  453. God has

  454. spared no

  455. expense to

  456. prepare it for

  457. us by

  458. sacrificing his

  459. own son so

  460. that we can go

  461. to a city

  462. covered in

  463. jewels and

  464. riches that

  465. is not filled

  466. with fear and

  467. uncertainty and

  468. tiredness and

  469. fatigue from

  470. trying to figure

  471. out how to

  472. work from home,

  473. how to do

  474. homeschool,

  475. how to try

  476. and get enough

  477. food that you

  478. need with

  479. restrictions on

  480. food all at

  481. the same time.

  482. Revelation lifts

  483. our eyes to a

  484. picture of a

  485. better city.

  486. A city that is

  487. better than

  488. Sydney, better

  489. than any in

  490. the world.

  491. Hebrews 13

  492. calls us to

  493. look to this

  494. city because it

  495. is better than

  496. the one living

  497. in.

  498. I don't think

  499. we do this

  500. nearly enough.

  501. I don't think

  502. we look to our

  503. future hope, to

  504. this city that

  505. we will be in

  506. enough.

  507. We don't look

  508. to this

  509. heavenly city

  510. and spend

  511. enough time

  512. thinking about

  513. what everlasting

  514. life will look

  515. like.

  516. Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  517. chapter 3

  518. that was read

  519. for us says

  520. since then

  521. you have been

  522. raised with

  523. Christ.

  524. Set your

  525. hearts on

  526. things above

  527. where Christ

  528. is, seated

  529. at the right

  530. hand of God.

  531. Set your mind

  532. on things above,

  533. not on earthly

  534. things.

  535. for you

  536. died and

  537. your life

  538. is now

  539. hidden with

  540. Christ

  541. your God.

  542. That is

  543. where our

  544. life is.

  545. We have

  546. been raised

  547. with Christ

  548. and now

  549. our life

  550. is hidden

  551. with God.

  552. It is not

  553. this temporary

  554. life.

  555. We are here

  556. but for a

  557. moment.

  558. We will be

  559. there with

  560. God for

  561. eternity.

  562. And so

  563. we should fix

  564. our minds

  565. on it.

  566. as Paul

  567. has said.

  568. Fix our

  569. minds on it.

  570. We should

  571. get excited

  572. for it.

  573. We should

  574. long for it

  575. and not

  576. hold too

  577. tightly to

  578. this life

  579. here.

  580. The

  581. Barnett family,

  582. we have been

  583. here in St.

  584. Paul's for

  585. nearly two

  586. years.

  587. We are

  588. coming up

  589. to our

  590. second

  591. anniversary.

  592. And I

  593. remember once

  594. it was

  595. announced that

  596. we were

  597. rejoining

  598. St.

  599. Paul's

  600. family and

  601. leaving

  602. our

  603. family.

  604. I

  605. remember

  606. getting

  607. very excited.

  608. I was

  609. looking forward

  610. to working

  611. with the

  612. team here

  613. of St.

  614. Paul's,

  615. looking forward

  616. to rejoining

  617. family.

  618. I was

  619. looking forward

  620. to working

  621. with Steve

  622. again.

  623. And I

  624. remember

  625. doing so much

  626. planning and

  627. preparation.

  628. One of the

  629. things I

  630. really love

  631. to do

  632. is I

  633. would draw

  634. the shape

  635. of the

  636. house and

  637. then I

  638. would draw

  639. where the

  640. furniture is

  641. going to

  642. fit in and

  643. I would

  644. plan how

  645. the house

  646. is going

  647. to look.

  648. When we

  649. had a

  650. day off

  651. we'd

  652. measure up

  653. things in

  654. the house

  655. we'd

  656. call in

  657. on the

  658. team and

  659. see how

  660. everything

  661. was going.

  662. My

  663. future

  664. was never

  665. far from

  666. my mind.

  667. I was

  668. living and

  669. planning for

  670. that future

  671. day to

  672. come when

  673. we would

  674. come to

  675. our new

  676. home.

  677. This is

  678. what we

  679. are meant

  680. to be

  681. doing.

  682. To be

  683. looking forward

  684. to the

  685. day when

  686. we come

  687. to our

  688. home.

  689. For us

  690. we need to

  691. be setting

  692. our mind

  693. on what

  694. is to

  695. come.

  696. What is

  697. above.

  698. I can't

  699. wait to

  700. see my

  701. grandmother

  702. again.

  703. To see

  704. many loved

  705. ones.

  706. To never

  707. be in

  708. pain.

  709. To be in

  710. a city of

  711. such wonder

  712. and security

  713. that God

  714. has placed

  715. precious stones

  716. in the

  717. walls.

  718. I am

  719. excited to

  720. see all

  721. that God

  722. has prepared

  723. for us.

  724. Because our

  725. everlasting life,

  726. our future

  727. will be

  728. a place

  729. of more.

  730. It is

  731. more than

  732. we can

  733. imagine.

  734. It is

  735. more joy,

  736. more goodness,

  737. more purity.

  738. Everything we

  739. think is good

  740. will either be

  741. amplified or

  742. it will be

  743. replaced with

  744. something even

  745. better,

  746. something

  747. transcendent.

  748. It will be a

  749. place of the

  750. highest joys

  751. and the

  752. deepest and

  753. most satisfying

  754. pleasures.

  755. so we

  756. should set

  757. our minds

  758. on.

  759. And then

  760. there is

  761. our God.

  762. We will

  763. know God

  764. for eternity.

  765. We will

  766. get to speak

  767. with him and

  768. ask him our

  769. questions.

  770. We will

  771. get to praise

  772. him for his

  773. grace and

  774. kindness and

  775. love to us.

  776. We will be

  777. there with our

  778. brother and

  779. saviour Jesus

  780. and we can

  781. thank him and

  782. praise him for

  783. all that he

  784. has done for

  785. us.

  786. As I

  787. mentioned,

  788. it was my

  789. birthday on

  790. Wednesday.

  791. Today,

  792. April 5th,

  793. is Micah's

  794. birthday.

  795. He turned

  796. three today.

  797. And one of

  798. his grandmothers

  799. sent him some

  800. birthday presents

  801. in the mail.

  802. And he was

  803. really excited to

  804. open those up.

  805. He opened those

  806. up while his

  807. grandmother was

  808. on FaceTime.

  809. So she could

  810. see his

  811. excitement for

  812. those presents.

  813. And those

  814. presents were

  815. great.

  816. But how much

  817. better will it

  818. be when Micah

  819. and his

  820. grandmother are

  821. reunited?

  822. And they

  823. can hug.

  824. He can hug

  825. his grandmother

  826. and say,

  827. thank you.

  828. God has

  829. so many good

  830. things waiting

  831. for us in

  832. heaven.

  833. But how much

  834. better will it

  835. be that we

  836. get God

  837. himself?

  838. As we come

  839. to the end

  840. of the Apostles

  841. Creed, it

  842. ends with an

  843. absolute bang.

  844. We have

  845. declared what

  846. we have

  847. believed,

  848. what we

  849. continue to

  850. believe about

  851. God, our

  852. Father, that

  853. he is almighty

  854. and he created

  855. the heavens and

  856. the earth.

  857. We declare what

  858. we believe about

  859. Jesus, his

  860. son, our

  861. Lord, who was

  862. conceived by the

  863. Holy Spirit, born

  864. of the Virgin

  865. Mary, that he

  866. suffered even

  867. though he was

  868. innocent and

  869. was crucified,

  870. died and was

  871. buried.

  872. He suffered

  873. hell for us.

  874. Yet he was

  875. raised from the

  876. dead, he

  877. ascended into

  878. heaven and

  879. now he sits

  880. at the right

  881. hand of God

  882. on the throne

  883. above all

  884. thrones with

  885. the name of

  886. all names.

  887. And we

  888. believe that

  889. he is coming

  890. back to judge

  891. the living and

  892. the dead.

  893. And we

  894. believe in the

  895. Holy Spirit

  896. who has made

  897. us a church,

  898. who has united

  899. us together,

  900. even though we

  901. are divided,

  902. united us

  903. together to

  904. treasure Jesus

  905. together.

  906. He has brought

  907. forgiveness from

  908. our sins and

  909. he will one

  910. day raise

  911. us from the

  912. dead, just

  913. like Jesus.

  914. And we

  915. will live our

  916. life with God

  917. for eternity.

  918. This creed

  919. doesn't exhaust

  920. all that there

  921. is to say

  922. about the

  923. Christian faith.

  924. But Christians

  925. have declared

  926. this boldly for

  927. centuries, in

  928. the face of

  929. opposition, in

  930. the face of

  931. death and

  932. plague.

  933. We take our

  934. place with all

  935. of our brothers

  936. and sisters

  937. declaring what

  938. we believe

  939. about our

  940. God as we

  941. follow him.

  942. The creed

  943. starts with

  944. our God who

  945. has created

  946. and ends

  947. with the hope

  948. that we have

  949. in what God

  950. has created

  951. for us, the

  952. new heavens.

  953. So right

  954. now, it is

  955. easy for us

  956. to have our

  957. eyes set on

  958. when the lockdown

  959. ends, whether

  960. that's July 1st

  961. or some other

  962. time, when

  963. this is all

  964. over and

  965. life can feel

  966. like it goes

  967. back to normal,

  968. we can go back

  969. to work and

  970. school and go

  971. outside and go

  972. to shops and

  973. restaurants again,

  974. but it won't

  975. be satisfied.

  976. It will be

  977. better, but a

  978. normal life here

  979. is not all that

  980. God has for us.

  981. And if we are

  982. just yearning for

  983. life to go back

  984. to normal, we

  985. will be let

  986. down.

  987. God has

  988. something far

  989. better in

  990. store for us

  991. that we can

  992. be setting our

  993. eyes on.

  994. A day that is

  995. worth yearning

  996. for and looking

  997. to.

  998. A day that

  999. will satisfy.

  1000. A life lived

  1001. for eternity,

  1002. in God.

  1003. Let me pray

  1004. for us.

  1005. Heavenly Father,

  1006. we thank you so

  1007. much for the

  1008. Apostles' Creed

  1009. that we can

  1010. declare what we

  1011. believe about

  1012. what you have

  1013. done for us

  1014. and who you

  1015. are.

  1016. Heavenly Father,

  1017. help us to

  1018. set our eyes

  1019. on things

  1020. above.

  1021. Help us to

  1022. set our eyes

  1023. on the

  1024. resurrection hope

  1025. that we have,

  1026. that we get to

  1027. be with you

  1028. forever.

  1029. Lord, as we

  1030. live our lives

  1031. waiting for that

  1032. day, unsure of

  1033. what tomorrow

  1034. will look like,

  1035. Father, help us

  1036. to place our

  1037. anxieties and

  1038. worries before

  1039. you and help

  1040. grow our trust

  1041. in you as the

  1042. God who is

  1043. sovereign over

  1044. all things,

  1045. all plagues and

  1046. disease.

  1047. And help us to

  1048. know and to

  1049. long for the

  1050. day that we

  1051. will see you

  1052. face to face

  1053. and be with you

  1054. for eternity.

  1055. And we pray

  1056. this in your

  1057. Son's name,

  1058. for your

  1059. glory.

  1060. Amen.

  1061. Amen.

  1062. Amen.

  1063. Amen.

  1064. Amen.
