  1. Matthew 4, my name is Steve Jeffrey. I'm the senior minister here at St. Paul's.

  2. And as we've been told, we are already moving into a new season and we're looking at the book of

  3. Habakkuk. So if you've got a Bible there with you, it'd be great if you could open up Habakkuk

  4. chapter one, or you can go to the St. Paul's app and open that up and you'll find an outline for

  5. my message, but also the Bible passages there in front of you. As we have said, we, and as you're

  6. fully aware, we are in a, one of those strange and odd seasons. Last Thursday, as I was finalising

  7. this message, there were 3.2 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections around the world,

  8. of which the death toll at that point was 227,000 people. Now, while today this is not the worst

  9. pandemic or in fact catastrophe that this world has experienced, we know that we are not at the end of

  10. this just yet. We are living through a unique and what many have called an era defining period.

  11. Many of our old certainties are now gone and whatever our view of the world or the, or whatever

  12. our beliefs are, they are being challenged. So, so whether you are a Christian or not, this coronavirus

  13. pandemic is perplexing and unsettling for everyone and we're reaching for answers. How do we begin to

  14. think through and cope with this season that we are in? And while restrictions might be easing,

  15. the pandemic is long from over. In the past, in times of national disaster like this, and especially

  16. in the Western world, people have flocked into churches to pray in, in moments like this. And

  17. such occurrences are fairly rare nowadays. Nowadays, fewer and fewer people in our society have any

  18. God dimension in their lives whatsoever. Since churches all over the world are being closed in

  19. order to limit the spread of this virus, you have to wonder where is God if it's impacting even the so-called

  20. people of God? That is, is he there at all? Is he accessible? Is he self-quarantined? Where or from whom

  21. can we get any solace or hope in a season like this? Now, for many people, the presence of evil,

  22. the presence of suffering in this world is one of the biggest issues for them when it comes to the

  23. existence of God. Some find the unjust suffering and especially the unjust suffering of innocent

  24. people is a philosophical problem that they just can't intellectually get over. For others,

  25. it's, it's, it's not so much an intellectual problem, it's an intensely personal issue for them.

  26. They don't care so much about the abstract question of whether God exists or not.

  27. They just refuse to trust and believe in any God who allows history and life to proceed

  28. as it has for centuries. Now, this little Old Testament book of Habakkuk that we're beginning into

  29. today really deals directly with this issue of suffering and evil because Habakkuk, even centuries

  30. ago, lived in a world very similar to the world in which we live and he asked the sort of questions

  31. that we ask. So if you've got the St. Paul's app there, you'll notice I've got an outline. It'd be

  32. great if you could just launch into that and take some notes as we're going along. Let me just give us

  33. some background information with this little book. It might help us understand a little bit. The very

  34. first verse introduces us to the man Habakkuk. It just says the prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet

  35. received. There's no little bio there outlining his education, his family, his interests. There's not

  36. really much known about him at all, but there is a little bit of a clue about his place in history

  37. when you look down into verse 6. And in verse 6, it appears that the Babylonians were about to

  38. prounce on Israel at any moment. So what that means is that Habakkuk was written sometime around the

  39. period between the rise of the Babylonian empire in 625 BC and their attack on Jerusalem in Israel,

  40. which began in 592 BC. Now Babylon was the world's superpower in its day, although they only held that

  41. position for about 80 years. They were the, if you like, the schoolyard bully who you really did not

  42. want to mess with. They weren't particularly nice people. Habakkuk is written with Babylonians ready

  43. to pounce. And it's a straightforward, it's an interesting, and it's a practical book. And the

  44. structure of it is really easy. The argument, the application is kind of easy to grasp, and yet at the

  45. same time, difficult for our minds and our hearts to come to grips with. So have a look at it with me.

  46. Again, get the St. Paul's app open. And my first point, I want to go through four things this morning,

  47. and let's first of all see what Habakkuk saw. As we kick off, there is something interesting to note

  48. about Habakkuk. He's a prophet of God. We're told that in verse 1. And as a prophet, his job is to be a

  49. messenger of God to God's people. And yet, this is the one prophet who says nothing to God's people at all.

  50. Not a single word. This book is Habakkuk the prophet speaking to God about what God has revealed to him.

  51. Wrestling with God. And Habakkuk's got two complaints to raise with God. In verse 2, he says,

  52. How long, O Lord, must I call for help? And then down in verse 3, he tells us what he saw.

  53. Why do you make me look at injustice? So Habakkuk is surrounded by violence and injustice and carnage and sin.

  54. And in his frustration, he cries out for help. And he asks God to intervene.

  55. And it seems like he gets nothing from God. Habakkuk looks around and he sees the bad guys winning.

  56. He sees the wicked ruling. Now this is Israel he's speaking about. This is historically to God's special people.

  57. And he sees military threats from the outside. He sees corruption on the inside.

  58. These are evil times. And he's wondering why God is silent. Why God's not doing anything about this.

  59. He says to God in verse 2, 3 and 4,

  60. Why aren't you listening to me?

  61. He wants to know why God seems to tolerate the evil.

  62. Why, God, are you absent?

  63. Why have you abandoned us?

  64. In verse 4, he says he can't even find justice amongst God's special people.

  65. He says even the law of God is perverted and the righteous people suffer endless abuse.

  66. That is, the prayers of the righteous are going unheard.

  67. Maybe that's, you're sitting here this morning and that's an experience that you know yourself.

  68. Where you have prayed and prayed and prayed and you've asked God to intervene in a situation.

  69. And yet something, nothing appears to ever happen.

  70. So what do you do about that?

  71. What did Habakkuk do?

  72. That's what he saw.

  73. Now what did he do?

  74. He did two things.

  75. Firstly, he was bold and he was honest.

  76. In verse 3, he says,

  77. Why do you tolerate wrong?

  78. Now that's pretty bold.

  79. That's pretty honest.

  80. He's actually, in actual fact, he's challenging God at that moment.

  81. But if you cast your eyes down to verse 12,

  82. he does something that's even more remarkable.

  83. Have a look at it.

  84. Lord, are you not from everlasting?

  85. In other words, aren't you the infinite God?

  86. The God who's always been.

  87. Aren't you the infinite God?

  88. Now that doesn't seem too remarkable or too confronting when you read it in the English language.

  89. And yet in the original language that Habakkuk was written in, the Hebrew language,

  90. that is a punishing statement.

  91. Habakkuk is saying something like this.

  92. I thought you were infinite.

  93. You're supposed to be the God who's wise and everlasting.

  94. And he's coming so close to saying to God,

  95. you're none of those things.

  96. One Hebrew scholar says of the Hebrew word that is translated in verse 12,

  97. Are you not?

  98. It occurs 96 times in the Old Testament.

  99. And almost every single time,

  100. it is in vigorous human argument.

  101. Nothing could have been more abrupt in Habakkuk's second prayer than the beginning of verse 12.

  102. God is not being approached here with any sense of courtesy and respect.

  103. Which makes the second thing that Habakkuk did quite interesting.

  104. Now we'll see more of this in the coming weeks,

  105. but let me just give us a bit of a glimpse into it here.

  106. On the one hand, Habakkuk is challenging God.

  107. But on the other hand,

  108. he never even hints that it's an option for him to walk away from God.

  109. To stop obeying God.

  110. To stop praying to God.

  111. To stop following God.

  112. Not even an option.

  113. Because Habakkuk is actually praying here.

  114. He comes to God with his anguish.

  115. And as soon as he accuses God in verse 12,

  116. he calls him,

  117. My God.

  118. My Holy One.

  119. He's wrestling safely with God.

  120. Hardly anyone treats God like this.

  121. Hardly anyone does this.

  122. Members of your traditional religious communities would say,

  123. Oh, you know,

  124. you don't speak to God like that.

  125. You don't accuse God.

  126. You don't challenge God.

  127. You don't have doubt.

  128. You don't question.

  129. You don't have doubts.

  130. You see,

  131. they see God as a king.

  132. As a harsh ruler that needs to be appeased.

  133. A God you'd better not say anything negative to.

  134. Or this God may well bring his big stick out and he'll wipe you out.

  135. More modern people have such an enormous confidence.

  136. This is us on the other hand.

  137. Have such an enormous confidence in our human reason and perception.

  138. And we say,

  139. I can't see why God would allow all of this suffering or evil.

  140. So frankly,

  141. I'm just not going to believe him.

  142. And Habakkuk does neither of those things.

  143. He is emotionally and intellectually frank and honest with God.

  144. But he doesn't even think about leaving.

  145. Habakkuk seems to be saying,

  146. If I can't figure out life with you,

  147. how on earth am I going to figure out life without you?

  148. This is unconditional faithful wrestling with God.

  149. So thirdly,

  150. God speaks.

  151. And what does Habakkuk hear from God?

  152. That made him so frank,

  153. so blunt,

  154. to speak to God without courtesy and respect in verse 12.

  155. Habakkuk's first answer to,

  156. sorry,

  157. God's first answer to Habakkuk's first complaint

  158. starts in verse 5.

  159. Have a look at it.

  160. Look at the nations and watch and be utterly amazed

  161. for I am going to do something in your day

  162. that you would not believe even if you were told.

  163. So God says to Habakkuk,

  164. okay,

  165. I'm going to tell you,

  166. but you're not going to believe it.

  167. You're not going to understand it.

  168. This is what I'm going to do.

  169. Verse 6.

  170. I am raising up the Babylonians,

  171. that ruthless and impetuous people

  172. who sweep across the whole earth

  173. to seize dwellings not their own.

  174. God is going to use the Babylonians

  175. to punish Israel

  176. for their evil and their injustices.

  177. They are powerful.

  178. They are ruthless.

  179. If they want something,

  180. they will plunder,

  181. they will kill in order to get it.

  182. And Habakkuk is horrified.

  183. God's answer to Habakkuk's complaint

  184. about the injustice and the violence

  185. is to bring more injustice and violence.

  186. This is how God is going to work out

  187. his plan of salvation

  188. for his people and for the world.

  189. This is how God is going to deal

  190. with the injustice and the violence,

  191. the sin,

  192. the evil and the carnage.

  193. And Habakkuk goes,

  194. what?

  195. Are you serious?

  196. It makes no sense.

  197. How can you use a wicked nation like Babylon

  198. to punish a more righteous nation like Israel?

  199. Wow.

  200. It's like Hitler being the presiding judge

  201. at the trial of Joseph Stalin.

  202. Makes no sense at all.

  203. What are you doing, God?

  204. In the end,

  205. the Bible is a theology book

  206. that teaches us about God

  207. and the way things actually are.

  208. And we discover God's ways

  209. are not our ways.

  210. God's ways are surprising.

  211. God's ways are often hard for us to work out

  212. because we do not have the mind of God.

  213. You see,

  214. to our finite grasp of reality,

  215. they seem wrong.

  216. Most people in our society

  217. would be a lot more comfortable

  218. with a God who's much more like Oprah

  219. or Dr. Fenn

  220. who dispenses advice

  221. or prefer a God more like a fairy

  222. who waves his wand

  223. and fixes things

  224. the way that we want them to be fixed.

  225. Now, to be fair,

  226. on God here,

  227. he did say to Habakkuk,

  228. if I told you,

  229. you're not going to understand it.

  230. God says to Habakkuk,

  231. and it was,

  232. however,

  233. don't you dare judge me

  234. by your calendars

  235. and your time frames.

  236. Habakkuk knows

  237. that God's promised salvation

  238. to the world

  239. through his people

  240. in the Old Testament.

  241. Habakkuk knows that.

  242. But his people

  243. are just as corrupt,

  244. just as wrong

  245. and as evil

  246. as everyone else.

  247. He wants God

  248. to do something

  249. about his plan of salvation

  250. and God says,

  251. I am.

  252. I'm going to wrap up

  253. the Babylonians

  254. to come on in

  255. to conquer my people,

  256. to take them away

  257. into exile.

  258. And Habakkuk says,

  259. that can't be the plan.

  260. See, Habakkuk can't see

  261. what God can see.

  262. And Habakkuk can't even see

  263. what we can see

  264. with the perspective

  265. of history

  266. from Habakkuk's time.

  267. You see,

  268. if Israel had never been

  269. taken into exile,

  270. then they would never

  271. have eventually spread

  272. throughout the whole

  273. Roman Empire

  274. centuries later.

  275. Wherever they spread,

  276. they built synagogues

  277. for Jews

  278. and synagogues

  279. for God-fearers

  280. these God-fearers

  281. were pagan Gentiles

  282. who got interested

  283. in the God

  284. of the Bible.

  285. And when Christianity

  286. began to spread

  287. through those synagogues

  288. and beyond those synagogues

  289. in the first century,

  290. the most receptive people

  291. in the entire world

  292. to God's message

  293. of salvation

  294. through Christ

  295. were the Gentiles

  296. in those God-fearing

  297. synagogues.

  298. They embraced it

  299. and through them

  300. the message

  301. of salvation

  302. went global.

  303. And the great irony

  304. of all this spread

  305. of the Christian faith

  306. in the early centuries

  307. was that it,

  308. in fact,

  309. made the world

  310. a less violent place.

  311. the influence

  312. of Christianity

  313. changed nations,

  314. changed cultural practices

  315. in such a way

  316. things like

  317. human sacrifice,

  318. infant suicide,

  319. slavery,

  320. gladiator competitions

  321. were stamped out

  322. right across the Roman Empire.

  323. The violence

  324. of the Babylonians,

  325. the Persians,

  326. the Romans,

  327. the Greeks

  328. led to a Christianity

  329. which has made

  330. all nations

  331. less violent.

  332. And Habakkuk

  333. did not see,

  334. could not have known

  335. that perspective

  336. on history

  337. in the same way

  338. that we can't see

  339. what God is doing

  340. right now.

  341. For instance,

  342. even more recent

  343. than Habakkuk,

  344. when the communists

  345. took over China,

  346. they expelled

  347. all of the

  348. Western missionaries.

  349. And the church

  350. in the Western world

  351. assumed

  352. that after

  353. 100 years

  354. of Christian

  355. mission work

  356. in China,

  357. the gospel

  358. in China

  359. was over.

  360. At the time,

  361. there was questions,

  362. what is God doing?

  363. What is he doing

  364. abandoning China?

  365. But we now know

  366. with the perspective

  367. of history

  368. that because

  369. the Western missionaries

  370. were kicked out

  371. of China,

  372. the Chinese

  373. made their Christian

  374. faith indigenous

  375. and now

  376. is one of the

  377. fastest growing

  378. Christian movements

  379. in the world.

  380. We don't have

  381. God's perspective

  382. on history

  383. or his time

  384. to bring out

  385. his plans.

  386. So often

  387. we sit back

  388. with our finite

  389. view of history

  390. and life

  391. and we go,

  392. I don't get it.

  393. I don't understand

  394. what you're doing

  395. and so frankly,

  396. I'm not going

  397. to believe in you.

  398. If you've got children,

  399. you will understand this.

  400. Maybe you don't

  401. understand it,

  402. but you've worked out

  403. why a three-year-old

  404. is always screaming

  405. as they tend to

  406. all the time.

  407. It's because

  408. they don't understand

  409. what you're doing.

  410. That's why.

  411. They don't understand

  412. what you're doing.

  413. They want something

  414. to eat

  415. and so they go

  416. and grab something

  417. to eat

  418. and you take it

  419. off them

  420. because it's poison

  421. or because it's

  422. a container of sugar

  423. or it's because

  424. it's the pet guinea pig

  425. and they scream

  426. because they don't

  427. understand why

  428. you've taken it

  429. from them

  430. and you can sit

  431. them down

  432. and you can

  433. explain it to them,

  434. the basis of nutrition,

  435. the danger of poison

  436. or the cruelty

  437. to animals,

  438. to the guinea pig

  439. and they might get

  440. the guinea pig thing

  441. but they're not going

  442. to understand

  443. the poison

  444. and the sugar thing

  445. and you say to them,

  446. you have to trust

  447. me on this

  448. and they go

  449. on screaming.

  450. The distance

  451. between the capability

  452. of the mind

  453. of God

  454. and the mind

  455. of a human being

  456. is infinite.

  457. It's vast.

  458. It's much greater

  459. than the capacity

  460. of a mind

  461. of an adult

  462. and a three-year-old

  463. to grasp reality.

  464. We expect

  465. to understand

  466. everything God

  467. does.

  468. To say that God

  469. has to make sense

  470. to me

  471. in everything

  472. he does

  473. in fact

  474. makes no sense

  475. at all

  476. that statement.

  477. When we say

  478. we don't believe

  479. in God

  480. because of suffering

  481. and evil

  482. makes us worse

  483. than a three-year-old.

  484. At least

  485. they put their trust

  486. even if they

  487. don't understand

  488. in their parents.

  489. If we don't

  490. trust God

  491. with what

  492. he says

  493. even when we

  494. don't understand

  495. it

  496. the consequences

  497. we die.

  498. So have a look

  499. at what this

  500. meant for Habakkuk.

  501. This revelation

  502. meant for Habakkuk

  503. and also for us.

  504. That's what he saw

  505. it's what he did

  506. it's what he heard

  507. finally what it meant

  508. for him

  509. and what it means

  510. for us.

  511. What does it mean

  512. when God says

  513. I'm doing something

  514. here

  515. that you will

  516. not understand?

  517. What does it mean

  518. for God

  519. to bring about

  520. salvation

  521. out of judgment

  522. justice

  523. out of violence

  524. and injustice?

  525. Centuries later

  526. from Habakkuk

  527. the Apostle Paul

  528. one of the

  529. early

  530. adopters

  531. of Christianity

  532. and certainly

  533. one of its

  534. major opponents

  535. in the first century

  536. if not the

  537. major proponents

  538. in the first century

  539. was on his first

  540. missionary journey

  541. in Acts chapter

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  542. 13

  543. if you've got a Bible

  544. in front of you

  545. flick into Acts

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  546. chapter 13

  547. and we arrive

  548. we see here

  549. that the Apostle Paul

  550. arrives at town

  551. into a town

  552. and he does

  553. what he normally

  554. does

  555. he goes into

  556. the synagogue

  557. and his sermon

  558. on this particular

  559. day

  560. is a brief

  561. history

  562. of the Old

  563. Testament

  564. and how

  565. all through

  566. history

  567. God has

  568. been pointing

  569. people to

  570. the person

  571. of Jesus Christ

  572. how all of

  573. history

  574. is heading

  575. in that direction

  576. and especially

  577. the death

  578. and the resurrection

  579. of Jesus

  580. and then he adds

  581. this

  582. in verse 38

  583. of Acts chapter 13

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  584. this is the

  585. implications

  586. of what he's

  587. just said

  588. he says

  589. therefore my

  590. brothers

  591. I want you

  592. to know

  593. that through

  594. Jesus

  595. the forgiveness

  596. of sins

  597. is proclaimed

  598. to you

  599. through him

  600. everyone

  601. who believes

  602. is justified

  603. from everything

  604. you could not

  605. be justified

  606. from by the

  607. law of Moses

  608. so what he's

  609. saying there

  610. is if

  611. because of

  612. everything I've

  613. just said

  614. if you put

  615. your trust

  616. in Jesus

  617. Christ

  618. you have

  619. faith in

  620. Jesus

  621. you are

  622. justified

  623. that is

  624. you are

  625. declared

  626. right

  627. before the

  628. God of

  629. the universe

  630. despite any

  631. of your

  632. evil

  633. and

  634. injustices

  635. and violences

  636. and wrongdoing

  637. from the past

  638. that is

  639. there is no

  640. fear in the

  641. future

  642. that the

  643. righteous God

  644. is going to

  645. pour out

  646. his

  647. justice

  648. on you

  649. as he

  650. does here

  651. on his

  652. own

  653. people

  654. Israel

  655. through the

  656. Babylonians

  657. all of our

  658. injustices

  659. against God

  660. and people

  661. are forgiven

  662. and then

  663. what the

  664. apostle Paul

  665. does in

  666. Acts 13

  667. is he quotes

  668. from Habakkuk

    Habakkuk 1:5

  669. chapter 1

  670. verse 5

  671. look at

  672. the nations

  673. and watch

  674. and be

  675. utterly

  676. amazed

  677. for I'm

  678. going to do

  679. something in

  680. your days

  681. that you

  682. would not

  683. believe

  684. even if

  685. you were

  686. told

  687. Paul's

  688. saying

  689. God's

  690. doing it

  691. again

  692. he's doing

  693. something

  694. that you

  695. cannot

  696. grasp

  697. Paul

  698. looks at

  699. Habakkuk

    Habakkuk 1:5

  700. chapter 1

  701. verse 5

  702. when God

  703. says he's

  704. going to

  705. bring

  706. salvation

  707. out of

  708. injustice

  709. and violence

  710. and says

  711. God was

  712. talking

  713. about

  714. Jesus

  715. in that

  716. moment

  717. the thing

  718. that God

  719. said to

  720. Habakkuk

  721. the principle

  722. that God

  723. brings

  724. salvation

  725. through

  726. violence

  727. and injustice

  728. finds its

  729. ultimate

  730. expression

  731. in the

  732. person

  733. of Jesus

  734. Christ

  735. when God

  736. came into

  737. this world

  738. and went

  739. to the

  740. cross

  741. he took

  742. the

  743. judgment

  744. that we

  745. deserve

  746. for our

  747. crimes

  748. against

  749. God

  750. he

  751. experienced

  752. absolute

  753. injustice

  754. he

  755. experienced

  756. the absolute

  757. injustice

  758. he

  759. suffered

  760. he died

  761. at the

  762. hands

  763. of the

  764. unrighteous

  765. why

  766. because

  767. he

  768. is

  769. righteous

  770. because

  771. he

  772. is

  773. holy

  774. Habakkuk

  775. couldn't

  776. understand

  777. why God

  778. put up

  779. with all

  780. the

  781. injustices

  782. and all

  783. if

  784. you're

  785. a holy

  786. God

  787. why do

  788. you put

  789. up with

  790. all the

  791. injustice

  792. and violence

  793. and wrong

  794. and on

  795. the cross

  796. it's

  797. finally

  798. explained

  799. centuries

  800. later

  801. it's

  802. finally

  803. explained

  804. because

  805. God

  806. is

  807. holy

  808. and

  809. just

  810. our

  811. sin

  812. had to

  813. be

  814. paid

  815. for

  816. he

  817. doesn't

  818. just

  819. forget

  820. it

  821. in the

  822. same

  823. way

  824. we

  825. don't

  826. just

  827. forget

  828. it

  829. he

  830. experienced

  831. his

  832. own

  833. justice

  834. on

  835. the

  836. cross

  837. he

  838. paid

  839. our

  840. penalty

  841. he

  842. is

  843. the

  844. ultimate

  845. fulfillment

  846. and

  847. example

  848. of

  849. bringing

  850. salvation

  851. out

  852. of

  853. injustice

  854. justice

  855. and

  856. violence

  857. light

  858. out of

  859. darkness

  860. redemption

  861. out of

  862. suffering

  863. evil

  864. and

  865. difficulty

  866. and the

  867. cross made

  868. no sense

  869. to anyone

  870. as it

  871. often makes

  872. no sense

  873. to anyone

  874. today

  875. no one

  876. could understand

  877. what God

  878. was

  879. what good

  880. he could

  881. bring out

  882. of the

  883. cross

  884. it

  885. didn't

  886. make

  887. sense

  888. and

  889. yet

  890. it

  891. was

  892. the

  893. ultimate

  894. good

  895. and

  896. because

  897. of

  898. it

  899. because

  900. of

  901. the

  902. cross

  903. of

  904. Jesus

  905. Christ

  906. we

  907. can

  908. look

  909. at

  910. our

  911. life

  912. we

  913. can

  914. look

  915. at

  916. evil

  917. times

  918. we

  919. can

  920. look

  921. at

  922. coronaviruses

  923. and

  924. we

  925. don't

  926. understand

  927. what

  928. God

  929. is

  930. doing

  931. and

  932. we

  933. don't

  934. understand

  935. what

  936. God

  937. is

  938. doing

  939. but

  940. we

  941. can

  942. know

  943. that

  944. he's

  945. bringing

  946. salvation

  947. out

  948. of

  949. it

  950. on

  951. the

  952. cross

  953. we

  954. also

  955. have

  956. the

  957. ultimate

  958. Habakkuk

  959. Habakkuk

  960. in this

  961. book

  962. is

  963. wrestling

  964. with

  965. God

  966. and

  967. yet

  968. he

  969. is

  970. faithful

  971. Jesus

  972. is

  973. the

  974. ultimate

  975. Habakkuk

  976. in the

  977. garden

  978. of

  979. Gethsemane

  980. on the

  981. night

  982. that

  983. he

  984. is

  985. arrested

  986. just

  987. before

  988. his

  989. execution

  990. and

  991. he

  992. pleads

  993. with

  994. God

  995. in the

  996. garden

  997. of

  998. Gethsemane

  999. if

  1000. there's

  1001. any

  1002. other

  1003. way

  1004. take

  1005. this

  1006. cup

  1007. from

  1008. me

  1009. if

  1010. there's

  1011. any

  1012. other

  1013. way

  1014. to

  1015. bring

  1016. salvation

  1017. out

  1018. of

  1019. the

  1020. injustice

  1021. and

  1022. the

  1023. violence

  1024. please

  1025. take

  1026. it

  1027. from

  1028. me

  1029. and

  1030. find

  1031. another

  1032. way

  1033. he

  1034. wrestled

  1035. with

  1036. God's

  1037. plan

  1038. of

  1039. salvation

  1040. and

  1041. yet

  1042. he

  1043. submitted

  1044. to it

  1045. regardless

  1046. even

  1047. at

  1048. great

  1049. personal

  1050. cost

  1051. he

  1052. unconditionally

  1053. faithfully

  1054. wrestled

  1055. with

  1056. his

  1057. father

  1058. for

  1059. your

  1060. sake

  1061. and

  1062. for

  1063. my

  1064. sake

  1065. for

  1066. the

  1067. sake

  1068. of

  1069. the

  1070. whole

  1071. world

  1072. Jesus

  1073. was

  1074. abandoned

  1075. on the

  1076. cross

  1077. so that

  1078. we

  1079. might

  1080. never

  1081. be

  1082. abandoned

  1083. by

  1084. God

  1085. even

  1086. when

  1087. we

  1088. might

  1089. feel

  1090. like

  1091. we

  1092. are

  1093. being

  1094. abandoned

  1095. by

  1096. God

  1097. his

  1098. promise

  1099. to

  1100. us

  1101. in

  1102. Jesus

  1103. is

  1104. that

  1105. he

  1106. never

  1107. abandons

  1108. us

  1109. God

  1110. is

  1111. always

  1112. working

  1113. he

  1114. is

  1115. always

  1116. doing

  1117. things

  1118. even

  1119. if

  1120. we

  1121. can't

  1122. see

  1123. it

  1124. even

  1125. if

  1126. we

  1127. don't

  1128. understand

  1129. it

  1130. because

  1131. Jesus

  1132. stuck

  1133. at it

  1134. on the

  1135. cross

  1136. when

  1137. the

  1138. evil

  1139. times

  1140. came

  1141. upon

  1142. him

  1143. for

  1144. you

  1145. and

  1146. for

  1147. me

  1148. when

  1149. the

  1150. evil

  1151. times

  1152. come

  1153. for

  1154. us

  1155. when

  1156. the

  1157. days

  1158. of

  1159. darkness

  1160. come

  1161. for

  1162. us

  1163. we

  1164. can

  1165. still

  1166. say

  1167. because

  1168. of

  1169. Jesus

  1170. we

  1171. can

  1172. still

  1173. say

  1174. I

  1175. know

  1176. God

  1177. is

  1178. working

  1179. I

  1180. know

  1181. God

  1182. loves

  1183. me

  1184. I

  1185. know

  1186. that

  1187. God

  1188. has

  1189. not

  1190. abandoned

  1191. me

  1192. and

  1193. so

  1194. I

  1195. will

  1196. trust

  1197. him

  1198. I

  1199. will

  1200. be

  1201. faithful

  1202. and

  1203. I

  1204. will

  1205. be

  1206. patient

  1207. and

  1208. I

  1209. will

  1210. live

  1211. by

  1212. faith

  1213. there

  1214. is

  1215. a

  1216. reason

  1217. for

  1218. everything

  1219. that

  1220. God

  1221. is

  1222. doing

  1223. we

  1224. may

  1225. not

  1226. know

  1227. what

  1228. it

  1229. is

  1230. but

  1231. because

  1232. of

  1233. Jesus

  1234. it

  1235. will

  1236. result

  1237. in

  1238. redemption

  1239. and

  1240. salvation

  1241. if we

  1242. put

  1243. our

  1244. trust

  1245. in

  1246. him

  1247. and

  1248. live

  1249. by

  1250. faith

  1251. in

  1252. him

  1253. but

  1254. there'll

  1255. be

  1256. more

  1257. of

  1258. that

  1259. next

  1260. week

  1261. as

  1262. Jane

  1263. comes

  1264. and

  1265. opens

  1266. up

  1267. the

  1268. early

  1269. parts

  1270. of

  1271. chapter

  1272. two

  1273. for

  1274. us

  1275. bless

  1276. you

  1277. a

  1278. tomb

  1279. a

  1280. wherein

  1281. another

  1282. kun

  1283. a

  1284. piece

  1285. at

  1286. a

  1287. high

  1288. and

  1289. and

  1290. to

  1291. a

  1292. good

  1293. and
