  1. Alan Francis Gardner was a 19th century British Royal Navy officer

  2. and missionary to Patagonia on the very southern tip of South America.

  3. In 1851, he found himself abandoned with a very small group

  4. while he was trying to set up a mission station

  5. on the remote island of Picton,

  6. which is right at the very bottom of South America

  7. in fairly harsh conditions.

  8. Unfortunately, because of bad planning and a range of other things,

  9. the whole group died of starvation while waiting to be resupplied.

  10. Gardner was the last one of the group to die.

  11. When their bodies were finally discovered by the resupply ship,

  12. they buried the bodies and the only thing that they brought back with them

  13. was Gardner's journal.

  14. So here's a man in a remote place, the last one alive.

  15. The rest of his colleagues have starred to death.

  16. His wife and his children are thousands and thousands of kilometres away.

  17. And the last entry in his journal,

  18. he quotes from Psalm 34 verse 10,

    Psalms 34:10

  19. the lions may grow weak and hungry,

  20. but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

  21. And the very last thing recorded in his journal was this.

  22. I am overwhelmed with the sense of the goodness of God.

  23. How do you come to that kind of end,

  24. but still have a life of sustained contentment and joy

  25. in the midst of those circumstances?

  26. Now, frankly, in our world,

  27. people, any sane person,

  28. would spend an absolute fortune,

  29. give their fortune to the answer to that question.

  30. The good news is you don't have to.

  31. It's in fact right in front of you in Habakkuk chapter three

  32. as we draw our brief journey through this book of Habakkuk to a close today.

  33. Now, we've seen over the past few weeks

  34. that Habakkuk lived in a world just like ours.

  35. His nation, Israel, was about to be crushed

  36. by the brutal Babylonian empire,

  37. which was coming upon them as God's judgment to Israel

  38. because of their corruption and their exploitation

  39. and their violence and their sin and their wickedness.

  40. Now, Habakkuk was really confused

  41. about what God was doing in this scenario

  42. and he really challenged God on it.

  43. And yet, what he hears from God

  44. is that Habakkuk, you think you care about it?

  45. I care about it more.

  46. I care about the wickedness and the carnage of this world.

  47. And there is a day of reckoning coming

  48. where I, God, will put all justice down,

  49. all injustice down.

  50. I will bring justice

  51. and I will rescue my people forever.

  52. And so the question for Habakkuk is,

  53. knowing that the Babylonian army is coming,

  54. how do you live with that?

  55. How do you live in the day of disaster and carnage

  56. and in the troubled times?

  57. How did he do it and how do we do it?

  58. How do we live in the day of disaster?

  59. Is it possible to die well like Gardner?

  60. Is it possible to sing praise to God

  61. in the day of calamity?

  62. To have joy in troubled times?

  63. Is it possible for the world to come

  64. collapsing down upon us

  65. and to sing as we did this morning

  66. that the Lord is good to me?

  67. I encourage you to open up the St. Paul's app.

  68. There you'll find out,

  69. you'll find an outline for today's talk,

  70. a Bible passage and a bunch of other stuff

  71. that I encourage you to get to.

  72. So St. Paul's app,

  73. really three things I want to do this morning.

  74. I want to first of all tie faith, grief and joy together.

  75. Then look at what does it look like

  76. to have joy in troubled times

  77. and how do we fuel joy in troubled times?

  78. So faith, a couple of weeks ago,

  79. we saw that the major theme of this book is faith

  80. in chapter two, verse four,

  81. which reads,

  82. the righteous will live by faith.

  83. Then in chapter two, verse 20,

  84. which is the end of the chapter,

  85. we get at least a glimpse

  86. of one of the characteristics of what true faith is.

  87. It says,

  88. but the Lord is in his holy temple

  89. let all the earth be silent before him.

  90. In other words,

  91. my spin on that is God is God and we are not.

  92. That's the point of verse 20.

  93. God stands outside of his creation,

  94. outside of the galaxies that he's made.

  95. He's the creator, the master, the rule of all things.

  96. And that is the starting point

  97. of what it means to have a life of faith.

  98. Of course, this rubs up against a culture like ours

  99. that has personal autonomy

  100. as most likely the highest value.

  101. And unfortunately,

  102. too many Christians operate

  103. with a personal autonomy view.

  104. And in fact,

  105. they've got more of a view of God,

  106. which is classically called

  107. moralistic therapeutic deism.

  108. Moralism is the belief

  109. that at the core of Christianity,

  110. you have to work hard to be really good people,

  111. got to obey the rules and be good people.

  112. People who obey the rules,

  113. who are compliant and diligent

  114. in religious duties especially.

  115. Therapeutic theology is the belief

  116. that God exists to serve me.

  117. His job is to make my life good and well

  118. and secure and happy and at peace.

  119. His job is to stop the bad things happening in life.

  120. God's job is to be a servant,

  121. if you like,

  122. responsible for taking care of my wants and my needs.

  123. And deism means that he's basically

  124. pretty much to stay out of the way

  125. unless, of course, I need him.

  126. Don't interfere in my life.

  127. Just stay out of the way until I need you.

  128. And so you put that together

  129. and it's a worldview

  130. that way too many Christians operate,

  131. especially in the Western world,

  132. is that if I do the right thing by God,

  133. then he will do the right thing by me.

  134. And when things don't work out as I plan,

  135. his job is to jump in and fix it.

  136. That's what he does.

  137. And it's a fatal distortion

  138. that so many operate with.

  139. Of course, when he doesn't work

  140. the way that I expect him to work

  141. or determine him to work,

  142. that's when faith in God

  143. is deeply, deeply rocked.

  144. One of the characteristics

  145. of genuine Christian faith

  146. is it lets God be God.

  147. We submit to his wisdom

  148. and his sovereign rule over all things.

  149. And in chapter three,

  150. the final chapter of Habakkuk,

  151. we see Habakkuk practicing genuine faith.

  152. And the whole chapter is a prayer of faith.

  153. But there's something else I want us to see.

  154. Even though he's practicing faith,

  155. he's a man deeply grieved at the same time.

  156. In verse 16,

  157. we get a glimpse into what faith in troubled time

  158. actually looks like in practice.

  159. Have a look at verse 16 with you.

  160. Get your Bibles open.

  161. Habakkuk 3 verse 16.

    Habakkuk 3:16

  162. This is really important.

  163. Listen.

  164. I heard my heart pounded.

  165. I heard and my heart pounded.

  166. Now, literally,

  167. what that reads in the literal language,

  168. in the original language,

  169. is my bowels trembled.

  170. Now, try not to think about that too much.

  171. But wherever your mind went in that moment,

  172. that's exactly what's going on here.

  173. My bowels trembled.

  174. My lips quivered at the sound.

  175. That is, he's crying.

  176. He's crying uncontrollably.

  177. Decay crept into my bones

  178. and my legs trembled.

  179. He is shaking like a leaf.

  180. He is so overwhelmed with grief and sorrow.

  181. And then he says,

  182. yet I will wait patiently,

  183. which means a deep peace and repose.

  184. Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come

  185. on the nation invading us.

  186. He's weeping uncontrollably with sorrow.

  187. He needs to change his underwear.

  188. He's a crumbled mess on the ground.

  189. And at the same time,

  190. he is filled with peace.

  191. Now, we have trouble with that.

  192. We think you can either have grief and sorrow

  193. or you can have peace and joy.

  194. It is possible, according to this,

  195. to be in deep sorrow

  196. and yet rejoice at exactly the same time.

  197. Joy in the Lord happens within the sorrow,

  198. not once the sorrow passes.

  199. It's a mistake to think that sorrow and grief

  200. is a lack of faith,

  201. as we often might interpret it in our modern eyes.

  202. Job chapter one, earlier on,

  203. is a clear example of this,

  204. earlier on in the Old Testament.

  205. Horrible things happened to Job.

  206. Lost his family, lost his fortune,

  207. lost his friends, lost his health.

  208. And it says,

  209. he tore his garments,

  210. he fell on the ground

  211. and he cried out to God.

  212. And then it says,

  213. in all these things,

  214. Job did not sin.

  215. Don't be afraid of the grief.

  216. Grief is not the opposite of faith.

  217. It can, in fact,

  218. enhance our faith in God

  219. because it drives us into God.

  220. The grief drove Habakkuk into God

  221. rather than away from God.

  222. And that's what faith is.

  223. Faith allows you to feel the grief

  224. in such a way that it doesn't sink you.

  225. And the remarkable thing,

  226. as I've already pointed out here,

  227. is that it's not just that his grief

  228. and faith go together,

  229. but his grief and joy go together.

  230. As we venture into verses 17 and 18 of chapter 3,

  231. we see that Habakkuk's faith

  232. flowed over into joy in troubled times.

  233. Now, we struggle with this one as well.

  234. We don't just struggle with grief and faith,

  235. but we struggle with joy and grief

  236. in troubled times.

  237. Normally, we declare God is good

  238. when the fig tree is fruitful,

  239. when the health is good,

  240. when the money's there,

  241. when the holiday was a blast,

  242. when we're surrounded by loved ones,

  243. when the circumstances are going

  244. the way that we assume

  245. that they should go,

  246. we go,

  247. ah,

  248. God is so good to me.

  249. And yet,

  250. there's nothing remarkably Christian about that.

  251. Anyone can do that.

  252. Habakkuk found a way

  253. to access the goodness of God

  254. despite the calamity.

  255. Most people infer the goodness of God

  256. when things are going well.

  257. Habakkuk, on the other hand,

  258. came into direct contact with it

  259. when things were going terribly wrong.

  260. Have a look at verses 17 and 18.

  261. Though the fig tree does not bud

  262. and there's no grapes on the vine,

  263. though the olive crops fail

  264. and the field produces no food,

  265. though there are no sheep in the pen,

  266. no cattle's in the stall,

  267. yet I will rejoice in the Lord.

  268. I will be joyful in God my Saviour.

  269. Now, what he mentions here

  270. is no small matter.

  271. There's no crops,

  272. there's no food,

  273. there's no sheep,

  274. there's no cattle.

  275. It's a calamity.

  276. It's like all the crops have failed.

  277. There's no imports coming in.

  278. The shelves of Woolworths and Coles

  279. and every other,

  280. they're all empty,

  281. not just the toilet paper

  282. and the flour.

  283. Everything's gone.

  284. There's no storehouses out.

  285. Wherever they are in this country

  286. are empty.

  287. Well, there's nothing coming in.

  288. This is an absolute social disaster.

  289. And that is what's coming

  290. when the Babylonians are coming.

  291. And yet he rejoices

  292. and he is joyful.

  293. His joy doesn't replace the sorrow.

  294. His joy doesn't come after the sorrow.

  295. When the grief drives you into God,

  296. it drives you into the joy

  297. that only God provides.

  298. And therefore,

  299. you can grieve deeply

  300. without being crushed.

  301. So the question before us

  302. is how did Habakkuk get to that point?

  303. How did he get to verses 16, 17, 18 and 19?

  304. How did he get there?

  305. Well, the rest of chapter three answers that.

  306. We get a glimpse of it

  307. in the introduction in his prayer

  308. in verse one of chapter three.

  309. Lord, I have heard of your fame.

  310. I stand in awe of your deeds, O Lord.

  311. Renew them in our day.

  312. In our time, make them known.

  313. In wrath, remember mercy.

  314. Now, Habakkuk's grief and joy

  315. expressing faith in God

  316. is based on God's track record.

  317. That's the rest of Habakkuk, Habakkuk three.

  318. It's the first part of this chapter.

  319. Habakkuk looks back at God's track record

  320. of saving his people.

  321. Now, what you see in this first 15 verses,

  322. if you like,

  323. is the recounting of the Exodus events

  324. events of Israel,

  325. where God rescues his people

  326. out of slavery in Egypt.

  327. And the main thing that Habakkuk does

  328. in chapter three,

  329. and is the source of his joy,

  330. is he remembers.

  331. Habakkuk remembers God's mighty acts

  332. of judgment on Israel

  333. with the devastating 10 plagues.

  334. He remembers the spectacular way

  335. in which God rescued Israel

  336. from oppressive slavery in Egypt.

  337. He remembers the trampling of the sea

  338. and the destruction of the Egyptian army

  339. as they attempt to follow Israel

  340. through the sea,

  341. and yet God closed the waters over them.

  342. He remembers the shaking of Mount Sinai

  343. as God appears to Moses

  344. and gave Israel the Ten Commandments

  345. as his newly formed people.

  346. He remembers the day

  347. that the sun stood still in the sky

  348. as God brought judgment upon the Amorites

  349. through his people.

  350. He remembers the parting of the Jordan River

  351. for Israel to walk across on dry land

  352. so that they could go in

  353. and take possession of their new, new home,

  354. the promised land.

  355. See, what Habakkuk remembers

  356. is the Exodus events,

  357. rescuing from slavery,

  358. the formation of the people of God

  359. and being taken in to the place

  360. that God would dwell with them

  361. in the promised land.

  362. The Exodus events,

  363. the salvation event

  364. in the Old Testament.

  365. Abakkuk is going,

  366. if you like,

  367. back to the gospel

  368. as he knew it.

  369. Israel was in slavery.

  370. They didn't have the power

  371. to get themselves out of it.

  372. God came

  373. and miraculously did

  374. what they could not do

  375. through the leadership of Moses.

  376. They were saved

  377. by what God did

  378. for them

  379. through Moses.

  380. Habakkuk is remembering

  381. the saving of God's people

  382. until he gets to verse 16

  383. and he has peace.

  384. He connects what he knows

  385. about God's saving actions

  386. in the past

  387. and he puts them

  388. into his present.

  389. In his confusion,

  390. in his uncertainty

  391. and his pain

  392. of his current calamity,

  393. Habakkuk looks back

  394. at the faithfulness of God

  395. through history

  396. and everything

  397. that God has done for them

  398. and the result of it

  399. and he has peace.

  400. He's reminded

  401. of God's trustworthiness

  402. and goodness

  403. his mercy,

  404. his salvation.

  405. That's what gets him

  406. to his place of peace

  407. and joy

  408. in verses 16 to 19.

  409. But let me just say,

  410. if you are listening

  411. to this right now,

  412. you and I

  413. have got a leg up

  414. on Habakkuk

  415. because we get

  416. a perspective

  417. of even the

  418. exodus events

  419. that even Habakkuk

  420. doesn't get.

  421. We've got a little bit

  422. more of an insight here.

  423. We get

  424. that by virtue,

  425. that is,

  426. we get this perspective

  427. by virtue

  428. that we are living

  429. on this side

  430. of history,

  431. of the life,

  432. the ministry,

  433. the death

  434. and the resurrection

  435. and the ascension

  436. of Jesus Christ.

  437. In Jesus Christ,

  438. we can be loved

  439. and accepted

  440. and approved

  441. by God

  442. in a way

  443. that even Habakkuk

  444. couldn't fully grasp

  445. with the exodus events.

  446. The exodus events

  447. where Moses leads Israel

  448. from slavery

  449. into their new home,

  450. the promised land

  451. where God would dwell

  452. with his people

  453. was simply a forerunner

  454. to a greater rescue

  455. and a permanent

  456. future home.

  457. The exodus

  458. that Jesus

  459. pulls off

  460. is the ultimate

  461. one.

  462. You see,

  463. Moses

  464. risked his life

  465. to liberate Israel

  466. from social

  467. and political bondage

  468. in Egypt.

  469. Jesus gave

  470. his life

  471. to liberate

  472. us

  473. from evil

  474. and wickedness

  475. and sin

  476. and death

  477. itself.

  478. On the night

  479. before the liberation

  480. that Moses

  481. commanded Israel

  482. to slay a lamb

  483. and to put their blood

  484. on the doorposts

  485. of their houses

  486. so that the angel

  487. of death

  488. would go straight

  489. pass over

  490. their house,

  491. that they would live

  492. and be liberated

  493. from slavery.

  494. and yet we hear

  495. in the New Testament

  496. that Jesus

  497. is

  498. the Lamb

  499. of God

  500. who shed

  501. his blood

  502. so that God's

  503. judgment

  504. would pass

  505. over us

  506. and that we

  507. would be liberated

  508. from sin

  509. and death

  510. and live forever

  511. with him.

  512. In Exodus

  513. 28

  514. we read

  515. that Moses

  516. engraved

  517. the names

  518. of Israel

  519. the children

  520. of Israel

  521. on precious

  522. stones

  523. and he had

  524. those stones

  525. placed

  526. on the breastplate

  527. of the high priest.

  528. So when the high priest

  529. wearing the breastplate

  530. walked into

  531. the tabernacle

  532. to do ministry

  533. before God

  534. on behalf

  535. of the people

  536. of Israel

  537. he had their names

  538. written

  539. over his heart.

  540. And we discover

  541. in the New Testament

  542. that Jesus

  543. is the great

  544. high priest

  545. who sits

  546. at God's

  547. right hand

  548. intervening

  549. for those

  550. who are his.

  551. And our

  552. advocate

  553. the Lord

  554. Jesus

  555. he has

  556. our names

  557. those who

  558. trust in him

  559. written

  560. in his heart.

  561. All

  562. who have

  563. faith

  564. in him

  565. are precious

  566. to him

  567. they are

  568. priceless

  569. to him

  570. and that's

  571. what lasts

  572. and that is

  573. why

  574. the Christian

  575. still has

  576. everything

  577. everything

  578. even

  579. when

  580. they lose

  581. everything.

  582. they

  583. are

  584. told to do

  585. and they're

  586. so excited

  587. that things went

  588. so well

  589. they had

  590. power

  591. they're becoming

  592. famous

  593. they're

  594. accomplishing

  595. great

  596. things

  597. and Jesus

  598. says to them

  599. in verse 20

  600. do not rejoice

  601. that the spirit

  602. submit to you

  603. but rejoice

  604. that your names

  605. are written

  606. in heaven.

  607. what he is

  608. saying

  609. is that

  610. your value

  611. your worth

  612. your importance

  613. your significance

  614. your happiness

  615. your joy

  616. is not tied

  617. and should not be tied

  618. by what you accomplish.

  619. He is saying

  620. that there is

  621. something even

  622. greater

  623. than power

  624. and wealth

  625. and reputation

  626. and achievement

  627. knowledge

  628. it is that

  629. your name

  630. is engraved

  631. in heaven.

  632. More important

  633. than your name

  634. being on a degree

  635. on a

  636. on a desk

  637. on

  638. on the top

  639. of a large

  640. bank account

  641. a title deed

  642. an award

  643. is that

  644. it is

  645. engraved

  646. in heaven.

  647. And what he's

  648. saying here

  649. in Luke 10

  650. he stops

  651. savoring

  652. and treasuring

  653. and doting

  654. and fondling

  655. in your mind

  656. the things

  657. that are

  658. so easily

  659. destroyed

  660. by calamity

  661. by viruses

  662. by disease

  663. by hardship

  664. by suffering

  665. by global

  666. financial crises

  667. when circumstances

  668. change

  669. and they

  670. will

  671. for all

  672. of us

  673. he says

  674. you will fall

  675. in that moment

  676. eternal life

  677. in Jesus

  678. is the

  679. only thing

  680. that the

  681. Babylonian army

  682. cannot destroy

  683. as we just

  684. read

  685. from

  686. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  687. 8

  688. who shall

  689. separate us

  690. from the love

  691. of Christ

  692. shall trouble

  693. or hardship

  694. or persecution

  695. or famine

  696. or nakedness

  697. or danger

  698. or sword

  699. no

  700. in all

  701. these things

  702. we

  703. that is

  704. those

  705. who put

  706. their faith

  707. in Jesus

  708. Christ

  709. are more

  710. than conquerors

  711. through him

  712. who loves

  713. us

  714. for I'm

  715. convinced

  716. that neither

  717. death

  718. nor life

  719. nor angels

  720. nor demons

  721. neither the

  722. present nor the

  723. future

  724. nor any

  725. powers

  726. neither height

  727. nor depth

  728. nor anything

  729. else in all

  730. of creation

  731. will be able

  732. to separate

  733. us

  734. from the

  735. love of God

  736. that is in

  737. Christ Jesus

  738. our Lord

  739. when calamity

  740. comes

  741. when the times

  742. of trouble

  743. come

  744. all things

  745. can be taken

  746. away from us

  747. except this

  748. one

  749. the one

  750. of promise

  751. of life

  752. forever

  753. the one

  754. promise

  755. that you

  756. are my

  757. much loved

  758. child

  759. that is

  760. secure

  761. nothing

  762. can touch

  763. that

  764. the source

  765. of joy

  766. in the

  767. Christian

  768. life

  769. is not

  770. whether

  771. things are

  772. working out

  773. in my

  774. life

  775. in the

  776. moment

  777. the way

  778. that I

  779. expect

  780. them to

  781. be

  782. it's

  783. not even

  784. what God

  785. might

  786. in fact

  787. be doing

  788. in me

  789. right now

  790. it is

  791. what God

  792. has done

  793. for me

  794. then

  795. in Jesus

  796. historically

  797. 2000

  798. years ago

  799. that guarantees

  800. a future

  801. for me

  802. forever

  803. of hope

  804. and joy

  805. for the

  806. Christian

  807. even the

  808. worst of

  809. things

  810. will turn

  811. out for

  812. good

  813. the good

  814. things can

  815. never be

  816. taken away

  817. and the

  818. best things

  819. are yet

  820. to come

  821. so how

  822. do we

  823. fuel a

  824. life of

  825. joy

  826. despite

  827. the

  828. circumstances

  829. now this

  830. is the

  831. great thing

  832. about

  833. Habakkuk

  834. if you

  835. followed us

  836. through this

  837. season

  838. over the

  839. last

  840. you know

  841. it's been

  842. a quick

  843. one

  844. four messages

  845. through

  846. Habakkuk

  847. but you

  848. notice it

  849. starts with

  850. complaint

  851. the book

  852. of Habakkuk

  853. starts with

  854. Habakkuk

  855. complaining

  856. against God

  857. because of

  858. the coming

  859. calamity

  860. and yet

  861. it ends

  862. with joy

  863. verse 18

  864. again

  865. yet I

  866. will rejoice

  867. in the

  868. Lord

  869. I will

  870. be joyful

  871. in God

  872. my

  873. saviour

  874. now this

  875. is not

  876. a

  877. classic

  878. stiff

  879. upper lip

  880. attitude

  881. from Habakkuk

  882. this is not

  883. Habakkuk

  884. being stoic

  885. here

  886. and it's

  887. not him

  888. being

  889. indifferent

  890. to the

  891. trouble

  892. we fuel

  893. our joy

  894. in troubled

  895. times

  896. by constantly

  897. going back

  898. to the

  899. gospel

  900. of the

  901. Lord

  902. Jesus

  903. Christ

  904. and

  905. remembering

  906. see

  907. Habakkuk

  908. in verse

  909. 18

  910. says the

  911. same

  912. thing

  913. twice

  914. I will

  915. rejoice

  916. I'll

  917. be

  918. joyful

  919. says it

  920. twice

  921. remembering

  922. remembering

  923. remembering

  924. remembering

  925. repeating

  926. it

  927. repeating

  928. it

  929. repeating

  930. it

  931. Habakkuk

  932. is calling

  933. us here

  934. to the

  935. discipline

  936. of going

  937. back

  938. remembering

  939. and rejoicing

  940. in what

  941. we have

  942. now at

  943. first glance

  944. it's easy

  945. to miss

  946. the way

  947. that this

  948. prayer

  949. ends

  950. there's

  951. this little

  952. subscription

  953. at the

  954. end

  955. which reads

  956. for the

  957. director

  958. of music

  959. on my

  960. stringed

  961. instruments

  962. you see

  963. this

  964. chapter

  965. is not

  966. merely

  967. a personal

  968. resolution

  969. of faith

  970. which was

  971. achieved

  972. by

  973. Habakkuk

  974. this

  975. prayer

  976. of

  977. faithful

  978. submission

  979. to

  980. God

  981. is

  982. meant

  983. to be

  984. duplicated

  985. and celebrated

  986. amongst God's

  987. people for

  988. generations to

  989. come

  990. this prayer

  991. this prayer

  992. is intentionally

  993. placed in

  994. the first

  995. person

  996. so that it

  997. draws each

  998. of us

  999. into the

  1000. prayer

  1001. into the

  1002. experience of

  1003. surrendering to

  1004. God together

  1005. and rejoicing

  1006. in his

  1007. salvation

  1008. and so

  1009. while the

  1010. mood of

  1011. Habakkuk

  1012. is somber

  1013. this

  1014. song

  1015. is not

  1016. somber

  1017. verses

  1018. 17 and

  1019. 18

  1020. of Habakkuk

  1021. 3

  1022. would have

  1023. to be

  1024. some of

  1025. the most

  1026. uplifting

  1027. verses

  1028. in the

  1029. entire

  1030. Bible

  1031. integral

  1032. to the

  1033. life

  1034. of faith

  1035. despite

  1036. the

  1037. calamities

  1038. is turning

  1039. our

  1040. remembering

  1041. of the

  1042. gospel

  1043. into

  1044. repeated

  1045. praise

  1046. of

  1047. and to

  1048. the

  1049. redeemer

  1050. and the

  1051. sustainer

  1052. of life

  1053. the Lord

  1054. Jesus

  1055. Christ

  1056. you see

  1057. rejoicing

  1058. in the

  1059. gospel

  1060. means to

  1061. treasure it

  1062. it means

  1063. to savor

  1064. it

  1065. it means

  1066. rejoicing

  1067. is to

  1068. take

  1069. something

  1070. that has

  1071. happened

  1072. and to

  1073. say

  1074. this

  1075. is the

  1076. most

  1077. important

  1078. thing

  1079. that's

  1080. happened

  1081. to me

  1082. over

  1083. and over

  1084. and over

  1085. again

  1086. rejoicing

  1087. is to

  1088. adore

  1089. who God

  1090. is

  1091. and what

  1092. he has

  1093. achieved

  1094. it's not

  1095. the same

  1096. as knowing

  1097. it's not

  1098. the same

  1099. as thinking

  1100. it is

  1101. appreciating

  1102. it is

  1103. valuing

  1104. in his

  1105. daily

  1106. devotional

  1107. book

  1108. my rock

  1109. my refuge

  1110. Tim Keller

  1111. writes this

  1112. the character

  1113. of this

  1114. praise

  1115. praise

  1116. that is

  1117. praise

  1118. to God

  1119. is to

  1120. be

  1121. glorious

  1122. what is

  1123. glorious

  1124. praise

  1125. glory

  1126. has

  1127. connotations

  1128. of

  1129. weightiness

  1130. dignity

  1131. magnificence

  1132. and beauty

  1133. glorious

  1134. worship

  1135. is

  1136. exuberant

  1137. never

  1138. half-hearted

  1139. it is

  1140. attractive

  1141. not off-putting

  1142. it is

  1143. awesome

  1144. never

  1145. sentimental

  1146. it is

  1147. brilliant

  1148. not

  1149. careless

  1150. it points

  1151. to God

  1152. not to

  1153. the

  1154. speakers

  1155. so

  1156. worship

  1157. should

  1158. never

  1159. be

  1160. trivial

  1161. never

  1162. pretentious

  1163. and so

  1164. as we

  1165. draw

  1166. our time

  1167. in Habakkuk

  1168. to a

  1169. close

  1170. in this

  1171. coronavirus

  1172. season

  1173. we're going

  1174. to do

  1175. that now

  1176. not with

  1177. the words

  1178. of Habakkuk

  1179. three

  1180. but with

  1181. words

  1182. written

  1183. by

  1184. another

  1185. one

  1186. who

  1187. faced

  1188. a day

  1189. of

  1190. calamity

  1191. more

  1192. than

  1193. 2,000

  1194. years

  1195. after

  1196. Habakkuk

  1197. Horatio

  1198. Gates

  1199. Spafford

  1200. was a

  1201. prominent

  1202. American

  1203. lawyer

  1204. and

  1205. Presbyterian

  1206. church

  1207. elder

  1208. in the

  1209. 1800s

  1210. he

  1211. lost

  1212. almost

  1213. his

  1214. entire

  1215. fortune

  1216. in the

  1217. great

  1218. fire

  1219. of

  1220. Chicago

  1221. of

  1222. 1871

  1223. scarlet

  1224. fever

  1225. killed

  1226. his

  1227. four

  1228. year

  1229. old

  1230. son

  1231. in

  1232. exactly

  1233. the

  1234. same

  1235. year

  1236. and

  1237. two

  1238. years

  1239. later

  1240. he

  1241. decided

  1242. to

  1243. take a

  1244. holiday

  1245. take the

  1246. family

  1247. what was

  1248. left of

  1249. his

  1250. family

  1251. on

  1252. holiday

  1253. to

  1254. Europe

  1255. for

  1256. some

  1257. respite

  1258. unfortunately

  1259. Spafford

  1260. was held

  1261. up with

  1262. business

  1263. and so

  1264. he had

  1265. to stay

  1266. behind

  1267. but his

  1268. wife

  1269. and his

  1270. four

  1271. daughters

  1272. travelled

  1273. ahead of

  1274. him

  1275. to

  1276. Europe

  1277. and he

  1278. was going

  1279. to meet

  1280. them

  1281. afterwards

  1282. on the

  1283. 22nd

  1284. of

  1285. November

  1286. 1873

  1287. while crossing

  1288. the

  1289. Atlantic

  1290. the ship

  1291. that his

  1292. wife and

  1293. his four

  1294. daughters

  1295. were on

  1296. was struck

  1297. by an

  1298. iron

  1299. sailing

  1300. vessel

  1301. and it

  1302. sunk

  1303. and

  1304. 226

  1305. people

  1306. lost

  1307. their

  1308. lives

  1309. including

  1310. all

  1311. four

  1312. of

  1313. Spafford's

  1314. daughters

  1315. when his

  1316. wife finally

  1317. got

  1318. to

  1319. Europe

  1320. she sent

  1321. a telegram

  1322. saved

  1323. alone

  1324. Spafford

  1325. sailed to

  1326. England

  1327. as soon

  1328. as he

  1329. could

  1330. and as

  1331. he sailed

  1332. over the

  1333. location

  1334. of his

  1335. daughter's

  1336. death

  1337. in the

  1338. Atlantic

  1339. Ocean

  1340. he wrote

  1341. a hymn

  1342. it's called

  1343. It Is

  1344. Well

  1345. With My

  1346. Soul

  1347. Though

  1348. Satan

  1349. should

  1350. buffet

  1351. though

  1352. his

  1353. trial

  1354. should

  1355. come

  1356. let

  1357. this

  1358. blessed

  1359. assurance

  1360. control

  1361. that

  1362. Christ

  1363. has

  1364. regarded

  1365. my

  1366. helpless

  1367. estate

  1368. and

  1369. has

  1370. shed

  1371. his

  1372. own

  1373. blood

  1374. for

  1375. my

  1376. soul

  1377. my

  1378. sin

  1379. oh

  1380. the

  1381. bliss

  1382. of

  1383. this

  1384. glorious

  1385. thought

  1386. my

  1387. sin

  1388. not

  1389. in
