  1. well good morning everyone it's great to be with you again i encourage you to keep your

  2. bibles open at matthew 18 and also if you go to the st paul's app you'll find an outline

  3. for today's message as we kick off on our mission month right now a former american footballer

  4. with the miami dolphins was interviewed a number of years ago now by newsweek media

  5. asking him specifically one of one of the questions they asked him was what motivated him

  6. to go to university and to study university and eventually took him down the line of

  7. becoming a footballer he said and his answer was really interesting he says my father

  8. and my uncle were human cannonballs in the carnivals and my father said to me one day son either go to

  9. university or become a human cannonball and he said then one day while i was working out the

  10. decision which way to go he said my uncle was shot out of the cannon missed the net hit the ferris wheel

  11. and died he said at that point i decided to go to university now self-reservation in that moment

  12. seems a really good reason a good motive uh um there are motive however is one of those strange things to

  13. work out because often motives are mixed uh and even for the christian in fact probably and especially

  14. for the christian for instance what has motivated you this morning to tune into uh this service

  15. uh what motivates you as a christian to do uh spiritual disciplines why read your bible why pray

  16. what motivates you to give of your resources what motivates you to serve other people what motivates you to

  17. show mercy and as we launch out into this uh season of mission month and thinking about sharing the hope

  18. that we have in jesus the very first place you want to start is what is our motive to do such things

  19. and this is really really really important for us to wrestle with as we as christians and as a church

  20. as we seek to love the vulnerable and the needy of our community we love and the compassion the mercy of

  21. jesus christ what is the motive for us doing so so if you've got the st paul's app open right now

  22. you'll see i've got three points i want to go through the motive for sharing mercy

  23. uh receiving hope leads to sharing hope and awakening to a life of sharing hope so here it is in a nutshell

  24. our motive is in a nutshell before we launch into the rest of the today uh god impoverished his son

  25. jesus christ on a cross so that all of his riches and health and righteousness and life could be given

  26. to us those who trust in him that's it in a nutshell 2 corinthians chapter 5 verse 21 in the new testament

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  27. reveals this mercy transaction so clearly it says god made him talking about jesus

  28. god made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him jesus we might become the righteousness

  29. of god a couple of chapters later in 2 corinthians uh it's stated in pure economic terms for you know

  30. the grace of our lord jesus christ that though he was rich yet for your sakes he became poor so that you

  31. through his poverty might become rich the foundational core element of the christian faith

  32. is that though poor all of humanity were being made rich through the mercy of god we were living in a

  33. rubbish tip we by and by his grace god has clothed us with kingly robes and made us to sit down at his

  34. royal banquet table god's grace has a powerful impact in every part of your life his grace

  35. changes everything a person who knows that they have received mercy while an undeserving enemy of god

  36. will have a heart of love and mercy and compassion for the most ungrateful and the difficult and the

  37. unlovely of society this is in in absolute nutshell when a christian sees

  38. alcoholics prisoners prostitutes drug addicts homeless refugees the broker the destitute of

  39. society of society they know they're looking in a mirror

  40. it is irrelevant if that particular christian has spent their entire life

  41. as a respectable middle class person

  42. they look at the broken and they say in the depths of their hearts

  43. spiritually that's me i i i was that person even if physically and socially i've never been where they

  44. are right now they are in desperate need of mercy and i spiritually was in desperate need of god's mercy to me

  45. god gives mercy to the ungrateful and the wicked and that is what we were

  46. and the powerful effect of his mercy and his grace in us is that we become

  47. like the god of mercy and we show it to others so i want to unpack that that's in a nutshell i want to

  48. unpack that as we launch into matthew 18 if you've got that bible that parable in front of you helps us to show

  49. helps us see how a god's grace to us motivates a life of grace

  50. now just before this in matthew 18 the parable there jesus been talking about how to handle things

  51. when someone sins against you and so peter his apostle asks him a question lord how many times

  52. shall i forgive my brother and sister who sins against me

  53. he says and then he goes and answers his own question up to seven times

  54. now the attitude of the rabbis uh jewish rabbis at that time

  55. was that you would forgive your brother no more than three times

  56. you know three strikes and then you're out

  57. and so peter at this point is probably thinking well i'll go a bit further than that

  58. uh and you know jesus should be pretty happy with that that response

  59. but jesus gives a stunning response in verse 22

  60. i tell you not seven times but 77 times

  61. now some commentators say that he he means literally 77 times others say well actually in fact he meant seven

  62. by 70 times he means 490 times the reality is either either alternative

  63. really misses the point of what jesus says

  64. because to try and calculate 77 or 590 is to go back to the pedantic calculation

  65. of forgiveness and mercy that jesus is rejecting at this point

  66. forgiveness and mercy is unlimited that's his point

  67. that is what god's grace towards us is it is unlimited

  68. and to make the point clear jesus then launches into this parable

  69. there's a man here's a character there's a man who owes a king

  70. 10 000 bags of gold it was a debt that according to verse 25 of matthew 18

  71. was not able to be paid now that's an understatement

  72. the original language refers to a debt as 10 000 talents

  73. now the talent was the highest unit of currency

  74. and 10 000 was the highest greek numeral

  75. so the idea here of this is that it's meant to convey the largest sum imaginable

  76. something what we might say it's just like squillions of dollars or something like that

  77. in fact the debt was a thousand times to get this

  78. in the this is first century palestine

  79. this particular debt was a thousand times

  80. the annual revenue of galilee judea samaria and idumea combined

  81. it's like taking all foreign debt globally

  82. and lumping on the responsibility of one human being

  83. to pay it back

  84. totally beyond imagination

  85. for those who first heard this

  86. impossible to pay this debt back

  87. and yet

  88. even though this particular character is bankrupt

  89. multiple multiple times over

  90. this particular servant still has a sense of pride

  91. he has not grasped the enormity of his bankruptcy

  92. have a look at what he says in verse 26

  93. at this the servant fell on his knees before him

  94. be patient with me he begged

  95. and i will pay you back everything

  96. so he hadn't quite understood that there was no way he could pay it back

  97. no amount of time no amount of patience on behalf of the king

  98. would ever see this servant paying back this money

  99. he is utterly bankrupt

  100. he is powerless

  101. he is helpless

  102. no ability whatsoever to trade out of this situation

  103. you see if you go back to luke 10

  104. the other passage was read to us

  105. law

  106. an expert of the law comes up to jesus and says

  107. so

  108. what does it mean to love my neighbor

  109. and the law expert in the parable of the good samaritan

  110. failed to grasp this concept as well

  111. he the law expert and both these men in this parable

  112. are the man on the road to jericho

  113. beaten helpless destitute

  114. couldn't do a thing to save themselves

  115. and both the law expert in luke 10

  116. the two servants here

  117. all in the same position

  118. in need of mercy

  119. they are as what the rest of the new testament would say

  120. they are dead spiritually

  121. ephesians 2 says of all of humanity

  122. that we are dead in our transgressions and sins

  123. and as we know dead people don't cut deals

  124. they don't pay back loans

  125. and that is the bible's view of our state before god

  126. spiritually dead

  127. bankrupt

  128. multiple times over

  129. no amount of trading on our behalf

  130. will ever pay back what we owe god

  131. now of course the king here who

  132. in matthew 18 in this parable

  133. the king who represents god

  134. understood the plight of this servant

  135. more than the servant did

  136. have a look at verse 27

  137. it says the servant's master took pity on him

  138. cancelled his debt

  139. let him go

  140. see this ultimately this story is about

  141. our god

  142. and the way that he graciously treats us

  143. we who are bankrupt

  144. before god

  145. with a debt of sin

  146. that we could never be

  147. that could never be repaid by us

  148. have been forgiven

  149. a debt

  150. our sin against god

  151. has been piling up

  152. load of bad debt

  153. hour

  154. after hour

  155. day

  156. after day

  157. week after week

  158. month after month

  159. year after year

  160. our entire lives

  161. but god

  162. in his gracious action

  163. in the lord jesus christ

  164. has wiped it clean

  165. wiped it clean

  166. god has forgiven us a debt

  167. that we could never pay back

  168. and the words of this servant

  169. this first servant

  170. be patient with me

  171. and i'll pay you back

  172. everything

  173. is so pitifully untrue

  174. for us as well

  175. no amount of good activity

  176. not even good christian activity

  177. no amount of pulling up our socks

  178. and rolling up our sleeves

  179. trying a little harder

  180. will morally do it

  181. our debt against god

  182. is phenomenal

  183. we are bankrupt

  184. we don't have the ability

  185. the power

  186. to trade out of it

  187. and god

  188. and god comes along

  189. and god comes along

  190. in jesus christ

  191. and as 2 corinthians 5 says

  192. swap positions with us

  193. he's cancelled the debt

  194. he's taken our debt

  195. upon himself

  196. and he's given us

  197. his righteousness

  198. now i'm fully aware

  199. that there are people

  200. tuned in this morning

  201. for you right now

  202. this is the first time

  203. you've heard this

  204. can i encourage you

  205. to receive

  206. this

  207. god's gracious gift

  208. to you in the lord jesus

  209. and have your debt

  210. against god cancelled

  211. if you want to know

  212. a bit more about

  213. adrian's already been up here

  214. and talked about it

  215. we're doing an investigating

  216. christianity course

  217. in the coming weeks

  218. only a couple of weeks away

  219. jump onto that

  220. do not let this moment

  221. pass for you

  222. so what happens now

  223. you see

  224. having experienced

  225. hope

  226. receiving hope

  227. leads to sharing hope

  228. and that's the remarkable twist

  229. that comes in this story

  230. in matthew 18

  231. when this servant

  232. who has been forgiven

  233. an incalculable debt

  234. goes out

  235. from that moment

  236. and

  237. just make sure

  238. that another servant

  239. of his

  240. who owes him

  241. a few dollars

  242. pays him back

  243. right down

  244. to the very last cent

  245. verse 28

  246. have a look at it

  247. it's just ridiculous

  248. but when that servant

  249. went out

  250. he found one of his

  251. fellow servants

  252. who owed him

  253. a hundred silver coins

  254. he grabbed him

  255. began to choke him

  256. pay back me

  257. what you owe

  258. he demanded

  259. and his fellow servant

  260. fell on his knees

  261. and he begged him

  262. be patient with me

  263. and I will pay you back

  264. but he refused

  265. instead

  266. he went off

  267. and had the man

  268. thrown

  269. into prison

  270. until he could pay

  271. back the debt

  272. now

  273. it's

  274. just

  275. unthinkable

  276. the fact that

  277. the second servant's

  278. debt

  279. is one

  280. six hundred

  281. thousandth

  282. of the first

  283. debt

  284. emphasizes the

  285. ludicrous nature

  286. of the behavior

  287. of that first

  288. servant

  289. whose servant

  290. has been forgiven

  291. everything

  292. the point

  293. here is

  294. that any

  295. limitation

  296. on grace

  297. on forgiveness

  298. on mercy

  299. on compassion

  300. shows

  301. that this

  302. first servant

  303. shows

  304. is totally

  305. inconceivable

  306. the second servant

  307. pleaded for mercy

  308. he says to me

  309. be patient

  310. and I will pay

  311. you back

  312. which is exactly

  313. what the first

  314. servant asked

  315. the difference is

  316. this second servant

  317. could have

  318. but instead

  319. the first servant

  320. had him thrown

  321. into prison

  322. where he would

  323. not be able

  324. to work

  325. and he could

  326. not earn

  327. the money

  328. to pay

  329. the debt

  330. back

  331. and therefore

  332. it will

  333. never be

  334. cancelled

  335. the one

  336. who had

  337. been shown

  338. mercy

  339. refused

  340. to show

  341. mercy

  342. it is an

  343. unthinkable

  344. response

  345. to God's

  346. mercy to us

  347. in Jesus

  348. and yet

  349. that's the way

  350. a person

  351. talks

  352. whose

  353. Christianity

  354. is simply

  355. a group

  356. of ideas

  357. and it's

  358. not an

  359. experience

  360. of precious

  361. mercy

  362. of God

  363. in the Lord

  364. Jesus Christ

  365. it's a person

  366. whose Christianity

  367. is all truth

  368. no treasure

  369. all choices

  370. no cherishing

  371. all logic

  372. about Christ

  373. and no love

  374. for Christ

  375. all decision

  376. and no delight

  377. and we see it

  378. in Matthew 18

  379. let's keep reading

  380. verse 32

  381. then the master

  382. called the servant

  383. in

  384. this is the king

  385. calling in the first

  386. servant

  387. you wicked

  388. servant

  389. I cancelled

  390. all that debt

  391. of yours

  392. because you

  393. begged me

  394. to

  395. shouldn't you

  396. have had mercy

  397. on your fellow

  398. servant

  399. just as I had

  400. on you

  401. and in anger

  402. his master

  403. handed him over

  404. to the jailers

  405. to be tortured

  406. until he should

  407. pay back

  408. all he owed

  409. and this is

  410. how my heavenly

  411. father will

  412. treat each

  413. of you

  414. unless you

  415. forgive your

  416. brother and

  417. sister

  418. from your

  419. heart

  420. now Jesus

  421. purpose

  422. in telling

  423. this parable

  424. is to teach

  425. the principle

  426. of unconditional

  427. forgiveness

  428. forgiveness

  429. the ministry

  430. of mercy

  431. compassion

  432. grace

  433. has the exact

  434. same motivation

  435. and the exact

  436. same rationale

  437. the grace

  438. of God

  439. to us

  440. in the Lord

  441. Jesus Christ

  442. the grace

  443. of God

  444. is dynamic

  445. and life

  446. changing

  447. God's grace

  448. his compassion

  449. his love

  450. his mercy

  451. his forgiveness

  452. motivates

  453. grace

  454. compassion

  455. love

  456. mercy

  457. forgiveness

  458. sharing hope

  459. in us

  460. the only

  461. true

  462. and enduring

  463. motivation

  464. for the

  465. Christian

  466. to love

  467. their neighbor

  468. that is

  469. all people

  470. is an

  471. experience

  472. and the

  473. grace

  474. and the

  475. mercy

  476. of God

  477. in Jesus

  478. if we

  479. know that

  480. we are

  481. sinners

  482. saved

  483. by grace

  484. alone

  485. we will be

  486. both open

  487. and generous

  488. to the

  489. outcast

  490. and the

  491. unlovely

  492. now let me

  493. just make a

  494. point here

  495. when secular

  496. people say

  497. that I don't

  498. need your

  499. Christian

  500. faith

  501. in order

  502. to

  503. practice

  504. moral

  505. behavior

  506. that is

  507. it's

  508. possible

  509. for me

  510. to love

  511. people

  512. regardless

  513. of your

  514. faith

  515. as a

  516. secular

  517. person

  518. they are

  519. right

  520. they don't

  521. need God

  522. to love

  523. someone

  524. in many

  525. ways

  526. in fact

  527. if you

  528. look at

  529. our

  530. society

  531. at the

  532. moment

  533. our

  534. society

  535. is more

  536. committed

  537. to things

  538. like social

  539. justice

  540. universal

  541. benevolence

  542. and human

  543. rights

  544. than any

  545. civilization

  546. has ever

  547. seen

  548. things like

  549. suffering

  550. death

  551. famine

  552. flood

  553. earthquakes

  554. pestilence

  555. war

  556. can

  557. waken up

  558. in our

  559. society

  560. wide

  561. movements

  562. of sympathy

  563. and practical

  564. solidarity

  565. in ways

  566. that have

  567. not been

  568. known

  569. before

  570. people

  571. but

  572. right

  573. actions

  574. don't

  575. always

  576. come

  577. from

  578. right

  579. motives

  580. and

  581. that's

  582. why

  583. we've

  584. got to

  585. constantly

  586. check

  587. our

  588. motives

  589. for

  590. instance

  591. right

  592. actions

  593. can come

  594. from the

  595. feeling

  596. of superiority

  597. to others

  598. it can

  599. pump up

  600. our

  601. fragile

  602. egos

  603. I feel

  604. better

  605. about

  606. myself

  607. when I

  608. find

  609. people

  610. who

  611. are

  612. less

  613. fortunate

  614. than

  615. me

  616. this

  617. applies

  618. also

  619. to

  620. the

  621. religious

  622. person

  623. who

  624. believes

  625. that

  626. God

  627. will

  628. favour

  629. them

  630. because

  631. of

  632. their

  633. morality

  634. and

  635. their

  636. respectability

  637. they

  638. normally

  639. have

  640. contempt

  641. people

  642. like

  643. this

  644. religious

  645. people

  646. would

  647. normally

  648. have

  649. contempt

  650. for

  651. the

  652. outcast

  653. and

  654. the

  655. unlovable

  656. they

  657. think

  658. things

  659. like

  660. I've

  661. worked

  662. really

  663. hard

  664. to

  665. get

  666. where

  667. I

  668. am

  669. to

  670. get

  671. what

  672. I've

  673. got

  674. they

  675. can

  676. do

  677. the

  678. same

  679. that's

  680. the

  681. language

  682. of the

  683. moralist

  684. and the

  685. legalist

  686. another

  687. motivation

  688. to act

  689. in mercy

  690. is the

  691. opposite

  692. of the

  693. big

  694. brother

  695. superiority

  696. motive

  697. it is

  698. simple

  699. anger

  700. over

  701. injustice

  702. we can

  703. be moved

  704. with a

  705. burning

  706. indignation

  707. against

  708. racism

  709. and oppression

  710. and sexism

  711. and this

  712. inevitably

  713. requires us

  714. to demonise

  715. one group

  716. of people

  717. in order

  718. to help

  719. another group

  720. of people

  721. one

  722. neighbour

  723. has to

  724. become

  725. my

  726. enemy

  727. in order

  728. for another

  729. neighbour

  730. to experience

  731. my love

  732. and strangely

  733. these acts

  734. of benevolence

  735. and mercy

  736. are really

  737. powered by

  738. hatred

  739. and contempt

  740. for people

  741. certain

  742. groups of

  743. people

  744. what we

  745. need

  746. as

  747. Christians

  748. is to

  749. be

  750. awakened

  751. to a

  752. life

  753. of

  754. sharing

  755. hope

  756. a

  757. Christian's

  758. motive

  759. for the

  760. alleviation

  761. of poverty

  762. inequality

  763. injustice

  764. suffering

  765. is the

  766. extension

  767. of the

  768. radical

  769. love

  770. that we

  771. have

  772. received

  773. from God

  774. which is

  775. unconditional

  776. and for

  777. all

  778. people

  779. it's the

  780. realisation

  781. that I

  782. am

  783. only

  784. where I

  785. am

  786. by the

  787. sheer

  788. and

  789. unmerited

  790. mercy

  791. of God

  792. in Jesus

  793. I am

  794. completely

  795. equal

  796. with

  797. every

  798. other

  799. human

  800. being

  801. that's

  802. the

  803. language

  804. of the

  805. person

  806. who has

  807. grasped

  808. and experienced

  809. the grace

  810. and the

  811. mercy

  812. of God

  813. in Jesus

  814. God

  815. God's

  816. love

  817. motivates

  818. our love

  819. by humbling

  820. us

  821. showing us

  822. that we

  823. are love

  824. sinners

  825. so that

  826. spending

  827. ourselves

  828. for others

  829. is not

  830. to be

  831. based on

  832. a sense

  833. of superiority

  834. but on

  835. having

  836. been shown

  837. our lack

  838. of it

  839. Christians

  840. know that

  841. all things

  842. wrong

  843. will be

  844. put right

  845. by Jesus

  846. and it

  847. is a

  848. powerful

  849. incentive

  850. to love

  851. even our

  852. enemy

  853. that's

  854. what the

  855. secularist

  856. or the

  857. moralist

  858. or the

  859. legalist

  860. cannot

  861. do

  862. they

  863. cannot

  864. give

  865. their

  866. life

  867. for

  868. their

  869. enemies

  870. as

  871. Jesus

  872. has

  873. given

  874. his

  875. life

  876. for

  877. his

  878. so

  879. Christians

  880. not only

  881. have a

  882. deeper

  883. motivation

  884. to love

  885. their

  886. neighbor

  887. but also

  888. a much

  889. stronger

  890. hope

  891. when they

  892. do

  893. according

  894. to the

  895. Bible

  896. this

  897. world

  898. this

  899. it's

  900. in the

  901. end

  902. is going

  903. to be

  904. renewed

  905. the

  906. promise

  907. of the

  908. resurrection

  909. of Jesus

  910. is that

  911. we

  912. too

  913. will be

  914. raised

  915. with him

  916. with new

  917. and perfect

  918. bodies

  919. forever

  920. all

  921. injustice

  922. or suffering

  923. or disease

  924. and death

  925. is going to be

  926. wiped away

  927. for all of

  928. eternity

  929. Jesus

  930. and Isaiah

  931. and James

  932. and John

  933. and Paul

  934. use the

  935. ministry of

  936. mercy

  937. as a way

  938. to judge

  939. between

  940. true and

  941. false

  942. Christianity

  943. a sensitive

  944. social

  945. conscience

  946. conscience

  947. and a

  948. life

  949. poured

  950. out

  951. in the

  952. deeds

  953. of

  954. mercy

  955. to

  956. the

  957. needy

  958. is

  959. the

  960. inevitable

  961. sign

  962. of a

  963. person

  964. who

  965. has

  966. grasped

  967. the

  968. mercy

  969. of

  970. God

  971. deep

  972. in

  973. their

  974. heart

  975. heart

  976. for the

  977. poor

  978. and the

  979. needy

  980. lays

  981. dormant

  982. in

  983. every

  984. Christian

  985. until

  986. someone

  987. comes

  988. along

  989. and

  990. preaches

  991. on

  992. God's

  993. mercy

  994. in

  995. connection

  996. to the

  997. ministry

  998. of

  999. mercy

  1000. and

  1001. hope

  1002. and

  1003. compassion

  1004. so if

  1005. you like

  1006. what it

  1007. does

  1008. is it

  1009. pushes

  1010. a button

  1011. deep

  1012. in the

  1013. soul

  1014. that

  1015. begins

  1016. the

  1017. process

  1018. of

  1019. waking

  1020. us

  1021. up

  1022. to

  1023. a

  1024. full

  1025. grasp

  1026. of

  1027. God's

  1028. grace

  1029. and

  1030. for

  1031. it

  1032. being

  1033. outworked

  1034. in

  1035. our

  1036. life

  1037. so if

  1038. this

  1039. has not

  1040. been

  1041. convincing

  1042. for you

  1043. this

  1044. morning

  1045. let me

  1046. try

  1047. someone

  1048. else

  1049. who's

  1050. done

  1051. it

  1052. I'll

  1053. give

  1054. you an

  1055. example

  1056. of this

  1057. kind

  1058. of

  1059. preaching

  1060. Scottish

  1061. minister

  1062. Robert

  1063. Murray

  1064. Mishane

  1065. preached

  1066. this

  1067. message

  1068. to

  1069. Scottish

  1070. Christians

  1071. in

  1072. Scottish

  1073. cities

  1074. in

  1075. 1838

  1076. let me

  1077. just

  1078. quote

  1079. from

  1080. it

  1081. I

  1082. fear

  1083. that

  1084. there

  1085. are

  1086. some

  1087. Christians

  1088. among

  1089. you

  1090. to

  1091. whom

  1092. Christ

  1093. will

  1094. not

  1095. be

  1096. able

  1097. to

  1098. say

  1099. on

  1100. the

  1101. last

  1102. day

  1103. well

  1104. done

  1105. good

  1106. and

  1107. faithful

  1108. servant

  1109. referring

  1110. to

  1111. Matthew

  1112. 25

  1113. your

  1114. hardy

  1115. dwelling

  1116. rises

  1117. amongst

  1118. the

  1119. thousands

  1120. who

  1121. are

  1122. scarcely

  1123. a fire

  1124. to

  1125. warn

  1126. themselves

  1127. at

  1128. and

  1129. have

  1130. but

  1131. little

  1132. clothing

  1133. to

  1134. keep

  1135. out

  1136. the

  1137. biting

  1138. frost

  1139. and

  1140. yet

  1141. you

  1142. don't

  1143. darken

  1144. their

  1145. door

  1146. you

  1147. heave

  1148. aside

  1149. perhaps

  1150. at a

  1151. distance

  1152. but

  1153. you

  1154. do

  1155. not

  1156. visit

  1157. them

  1158. my

  1159. friends

  1160. I'm

  1161. concerned

  1162. for

  1163. the

  1164. poor

  1165. but

  1166. I'm

  1167. actually

  1168. more

  1169. concerned

  1170. for

  1171. you

  1172. I

  1173. don't

  1174. know

  1175. that

  1176. Christ

  1177. will

  1178. say

  1179. to

  1180. you

  1181. on

  1182. that

  1183. great

  1184. day

  1185. I

  1186. don't

  1187. know

  1188. what

  1189. he

  1190. will

  1191. say

  1192. to

  1193. you

  1194. on

  1195. that

  1196. great

  1197. day

  1198. you

  1199. say

  1200. you

  1201. follow

  1202. Christ

  1203. but

  1204. you

  1205. don't

  1206. care

  1207. for

  1208. his

  1209. poor

  1210. I

  1211. fear

  1212. that

  1213. there

  1214. may

  1215. be

  1216. many

  1217. hearing

  1218. me

  1219. who

  1220. now

  1221. know

  1222. well

  1223. that

  1224. they

  1225. may

  1226. not

  1227. even

  1228. be

  1229. Christians

  1230. at all

  1231. because

  1232. they

  1233. don't

  1234. love

  1235. to

  1236. give

  1237. now

  1238. dear

  1239. friends

  1240. some

  1241. of you

  1242. pray

  1243. night

  1244. and day

  1245. to be

  1246. branches

  1247. of the

  1248. true

  1249. vine

  1250. you

  1251. pray

  1252. to be

  1253. made

  1254. all

  1255. over

  1256. in

  1257. the

  1258. image

  1259. of

  1260. Christ

  1261. if

  1262. so

  1263. you

  1264. must

  1265. be

  1266. like

  1267. him

  1268. in

  1269. giving

  1270. though

  1271. he

  1272. was

  1273. rich

  1274. yet

  1275. for

  1276. your

  1277. sakes

  1278. he

  1279. became

  1280. poor

  1281. some

  1282. object

  1283. to

  1284. this

  1285. my

  1286. money

  1287. is

  1288. my

  1289. own

  1290. my

  1291. answer

  1292. Christ

  1293. might

  1294. well

  1295. have

  1296. said

  1297. my

  1298. blood

  1299. is

  1300. my

  1301. own

  1302. my

  1303. life

  1304. is

  1305. my

  1306. own

  1307. another

  1308. objects

  1309. the

  1310. poor

  1311. are

  1312. undeserving

  1313. my

  1314. answer

  1315. Christ

  1316. might

  1317. have

  1318. said

  1319. they

  1320. are

  1321. wicked

  1322. rebels

  1323. shall

  1324. I

  1325. lay

  1326. down

  1327. my

  1328. life

  1329. for

  1330. these

  1331. no

  1332. he

  1333. left

  1334. the

  1335. 99

  1336. and

  1337. came

  1338. after

  1339. the

  1340. lost

  1341. he

  1342. gave

  1343. his

  1344. blood

  1345. for

  1346. the

  1347. undeserving

  1348. yet

  1349. another

  1350. objects

  1351. the

  1352. poor

  1353. might

  1354. abuse

  1355. it

  1356. my

  1357. answer

  1358. Christ

  1359. might

  1360. have

  1361. said

  1362. the

  1363. same

  1364. yes

  1365. with

  1366. far

  1367. greater

  1368. truth

  1369. Christ

  1370. knew

  1371. that

  1372. thousands

  1373. would

  1374. trample

  1375. upon

  1376. his

  1377. blood

  1378. under

  1379. their

  1380. feet

  1381. that

  1382. they

  1383. would

  1384. despise

  1385. it

  1386. that

  1387. they

  1388. would

  1389. make

  1390. it

  1391. an

  1392. excuse

  1393. for

  1394. sinning

  1395. more

  1396. yet

  1397. he

  1398. gave

  1399. his

  1400. own

  1401. blood

  1402. oh

  1403. my

  1404. dear

  1405. Christians

  1406. if

  1407. you

  1408. would

  1409. be

  1410. like

  1411. Christ

  1412. give

  1413. much

  1414. give

  1415. often

  1416. give

  1417. freely

  1418. to

  1419. the

  1420. vile

  1421. and

  1422. the

  1423. poor

  1424. the

  1425. thankless

  1426. and

  1427. the

  1428. undeserving

  1429. Christ

  1430. is

  1431. glorious

  1432. and

  1433. happy

  1434. and

  1435. so

  1436. will

  1437. you

  1438. be

  1439. it

  1440. is

  1441. not

  1442. your

  1443. money

  1444. I

  1445. want

  1446. he

  1447. says

  1448. but

  1449. your

  1450. happiness

  1451. remember

  1452. his

  1453. own

  1454. words

  1455. it

  1456. is

  1457. more

  1458. blessed

  1459. to

  1460. give

  1461. than

  1462. to

  1463. receive

  1464. and

  1465. so

  1466. is

  1467. the

  1468. spirit

  1469. of

  1470. God

  1471. waking

  1472. you

  1473. up

  1474. from

  1475. a

  1476. deep

  1477. slumber

  1478. the

  1479. parable

  1480. of

  1481. the

  1483. Samaritan

  1484. just

  1485. a

  1486. little

  1487. bit

  1488. that

  1489. we

  1490. read

  1491. and

  1492. the

  1493. parable

  1494. of

  1495. the

  1496. unmerciful

  1497. servant

  1498. which

  1499. we

  1500. just

  1501. looked

  1502. at

  1503. are

  1504. the

  1505. pattern

  1506. of

  1507. God's

  1508. mercy

  1509. his

  1510. mercy

  1511. generates

  1512. a

  1513. life

  1514. of

  1515. sharing

  1516. hope

  1517. and

  1518. mercy

  1519. and

  1520. so

  1521. I

  1522. invite

  1523. you

  1524. I

  1525. urge

  1526. you

  1527. to

  1528. lay

  1529. aside

  1530. any

  1531. remnant

  1532. of

  1533. self

  1534. goodness

  1535. that

  1536. you

  1537. think

  1538. that

  1539. you

  1540. might

  1541. still

  1542. have

  1543. admit

  1544. your

  1545. total

  1546. spiritual

  1547. bankruptcy

  1548. drink

  1549. deeply

  1550. of

  1551. the

  1552. infinite

  1553. grace

  1554. of

  1555. the

  1556. Lord

  1557. Jesus

  1558. Christ

  1559. and

  1560. the

  1561. mercy

  1562. of

  1563. God

  1564. and

  1565. then

  1566. in

  1567. deep

  1568. awareness

  1569. and

  1570. appreciation

  1571. for

  1572. the

  1573. hope

  1574. that

  1575. you

  1576. now

  1577. have

  1578. that

  1579. you've

  1580. received

  1581. live

  1582. a

  1583. life

  1584. of

  1585. sharing

  1586. hope

  1587. what

  1588. that

  1589. looks

  1590. like

  1591. is

  1592. going

  1593. to be

  1594. unpacked

  1595. for

  1596. us

  1597. more

  1598. over

  1599. the

  1600. coming

  1601. weeks

  1602. including

  1603. some

  1604. of the

  1605. projects

  1606. that

  1607. we're

  1608. going

  1609. to

  1610. take

  1611. on

  1612. as

  1613. practical

  1614. steps

  1615. forward

  1616. but

  1617. let me

  1618. just

  1619. close

  1620. briefly

  1621. on a

  1622. note

  1623. of

  1624. thanksgiving

  1625. I am

  1626. grateful

  1627. that we

  1628. as a

  1629. church

  1630. have been

  1631. increasingly

  1632. moving

  1633. in this

  1634. direction

  1635. becoming

  1636. increasingly

  1637. generous

  1638. to

  1639. others

  1640. and

  1641. just

  1642. at the

  1643. end

  1644. of last

  1645. year

  1646. we

  1647. put

  1648. together

  1649. a

  1650. drought

  1651. appeal

  1652. to help

  1653. Narrabri

  1654. Anglican

  1655. Parish

  1656. going

  1657. through

  1658. difficult

  1659. times

  1660. because of

  1661. the

  1662. drought

  1663. and as

  1664. of

  1665. Friday

  1666. we're

  1667. going

  1668. to

  1669. continue

  1670. that

  1671. drought

  1672. appeal

  1673. as

  1674. of

  1675. Friday

  1676. I

  1677. spoke

  1678. to

  1679. the

  1680. vickery

  1681. there

  1682. at

  1683. Narrabri

  1684. and he

  1685. was

  1686. just

  1687. so

  1688. thankful

  1689. for

  1690. our

  1691. partnership

  1692. so let

  1693. me

  1694. just

  1695. end

  1696. with a

  1697. note

  1698. of

  1699. gratitude

  1700. and

  1701. thankfulness

  1702. as I

  1703. read to

  1704. you

  1705. the note

  1706. that he

  1707. sent

  1708. me

  1709. Steve

  1710. I

  1711. want

  1712. to

  1713. thank

  1714. you

  1715. both

  1716. for

  1717. the

  1718. conversation

  1719. this

  1720. morning

  1721. and

  1722. for

  1723. the

  1724. incredible

  1725. generosity

  1726. that

  1727. St.

  1728. Paul's

  1729. has

  1730. extended

  1731. towards

  1732. God's

  1733. mob

  1734. at

  1735. Narrabri

  1736. Anglican

  1737. Church

  1738. we are

  1739. preaching

  1740. on

  1741. Matthew

  1742. 9

  1743. 35

  1744. to

  1745. 10

  1746. 15

  1747. this

  1748. weekend

  1749. and

  1750. the

  1751. compassion

  1752. and

  1753. generosity

  1754. that

  1755. are

  1756. mentioned

  1757. there

  1758. stand

  1759. out

  1760. in

  1761. your

  1762. care

  1763. of

  1764. us

  1765. in

  1766. Narrabri

  1767. the

  1768. region

  1769. is

  1770. looking

  1771. marvellous

  1772. at the

  1773. moment

  1774. but

  1775. the

  1776. hold

  1777. of

  1778. the

  1779. drought

  1780. remains

  1781. firm

  1782. and

  1783. the

  1784. pressures

  1785. of

  1786. COVID-19

  1787. are

  1788. significant

  1789. as

  1790. you

  1791. and

  1792. we

  1793. try

  1794. to

  1795. navigate

  1796. our

  1797. way

  1798. through

  1799. constant

  1800. decisions

  1801. and

  1802. the

  1803. limitations

  1804. that

  1805. this

  1806. broken

  1807. world

  1808. is

  1809. placing

  1810. on

  1811. us

  1812. we

  1813. are

  1814. thankful

  1815. for

  1816. the

  1817. tangible

  1818. reminder

  1819. of

  1820. God's

  1821. provision

  1822. in

  1823. your

  1824. partnership

  1825. please

  1826. extend

  1827. our

  1828. thanks

  1829. to

  1830. God's

  1831. mob

  1832. that

  1833. meets

  1834. under

  1835. your

  1836. care

  1837. and

  1838. your

  1839. leadership

  1840. at

  1841. St.

  1842. Paul's

  1843. Chatswood

  1844. let's

  1845. continue

  1846. in that

  1847. ministry

  1848. of grace

  1849. and mercy

  1850. to others

  1851. in need
