  1. Oh, good. Good morning. It's great being with you again this morning as we close off our mission month here at St. Paul's.

  2. We have been looking at raising funds for a variety of ministries, but particularly looking at raising the profile for us as a church to seek to share what God has given to us,

  3. but also to seek to shape us as a church of compassion and mercy as we look into the future.

  4. So I'd like to pray before we launch in to this final message and wrapping up this mission month for us.

  5. Gracious God, we thank you that you are the God of radical generosity.

  6. We thank you that in the Lord Jesus, you have taken us from spiritual poverty and bankruptcy,

  7. and you have overwhelmed us in such a way that we are rich in you beyond all measure,

  8. beyond any comparison, we are overwhelmingly wealthy.

  9. We pray that the good news of the gospel will shape our hearts and our lifestyles.

  10. And so use this time now in your word to speak to us and to reform our hearts, we pray in Jesus name. Amen.

  11. A little over three years ago now, Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest gathered the media and politicians together to announce

  12. that he will give away $400 million of his personal fortune.

  13. It is the largest single donation by a living person in Australian history.

  14. Forrest said, and I quote,

  15. All of us who have done well have been blessed by good fortune.

  16. And so the generous person, the loving person gives back.

  17. Now at the time of making that donation,

  18. Andrew Forrest ranked as the sixth wealthiest Australian with a personal fortune of $6.84 billion.

  19. Today he's apparently worth something in the order of $10 billion.

  20. Forrest then said as part of the announcement,

  21. Now that he was in a better financial position, he was able to be generous.

  22. Now that statement, now that he is financially secure, which is probably an understatement in some ways.

  23. Now that he is financially secure, he is able to give back to Australians and to be generous.

  24. The assumption is that I can't afford to be generous.

  25. I can't afford to help is in fact one of the biggest roadblocks that we have to a life of mercy and justice.

  26. So can I just encourage you now to get your Bibles, open them up and also go to the St. Paul's app.

  27. And you've got a bit of an outline of where we're going to head in today's message.

  28. If you have just tuned into this series, we have been using the Good Samaritan in Luke chapter 10 as our foundational text for mission month.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  29. And the purpose of the parable of the parable of the parable of the parable of the good Samaritan is to answer the question that was posed to Jesus by an expert in the law, Jewish law.

  30. And the question that he posed to Jesus is, who is my neighbor?

  31. And we are told that the man was seeking to justify himself.

  32. He wanted Jesus to reduce the command, to make it manageable so that he could love his neighbor in an attainable kind of way.

  33. Trying to narrow the command so that he could in fact obey the command.

  34. And Jesus' answer is clear.

  35. There is no limits to mercy.

  36. And in fact, Jesus sets a standard for us in the parable of the good Samaritan that is unattainable.

  37. His true goal in the parable of the good Samaritan was to show the law expert and us that he and we are in fact spiritually poor.

  38. We are bankrupt.

  39. And he wants to prepare us to seek the spiritual riches that are the mercy of God.

  40. What is the mercy that Jesus is preparing the law expert for and us for?

  41. Well, here it is.

  42. All of humanity is like that man beaten on the road in the parable of the good Samaritan.

  43. Lying in our own blood, waiting for death.

  44. We are spiritually bankrupt.

  45. We are lost.

  46. Unable to help ourselves.

  47. And yet God has provided spiritual health and wealth and healing and life in the Lord Jesus.

  48. And the way he did that was he impoverished his own son, the Lord Jesus, on a cross so that all of Jesus' riches and his health and his righteousness and his life could be given to those who put their trust in him.

  49. 2 Corinthians chapter 5, 21 in the New Testament reveals this merciful transaction so clearly when it says,

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  50. God made him, this is talking about Jesus, who had no sin to be sin for us so that we in him might become the righteousness of God.

  51. That we might become wealthy beyond our imagination.

  52. So the foundational core element of the Christian faith is that though we are spiritually bankrupt, we have been made rich beyond our comprehension through the mercy of God.

  53. Now one powerful effect that the gospel of grace, the core element of Christianity has on a person is that it creates a life of radical generosity.

  54. We saw it again in the parable of the good Samaritan.

  55. That the aid that the Samaritan rendered to the injured man was expensive.

  56. Luke chapter 10 verse 35 says,

    Luke 10:35

  57. The next day he took two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, looked after him, he said,

  58. And when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense that you may have.

  59. So this man, this Samaritan, obviously ignored his schedule when he showed mercy.

  60. Wherever it was that he was heading in that moment, he didn't get there on that particular day.

  61. He also risked his own safety to stop on such a dangerous road to bring aid to an enemy.

  62. He also took the man to a hotel where he got cared for him during the course of the night.

  63. And the next day, he paid the owner of the hotel for the room until the guy recovered whenever that was going to be.

  64. His mercy in reality to his enemy is open-handed because he says,

  65. When I return, I'll reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.

  66. Now in the past number of weeks, we have been looking at this issue in the Bible.

  67. And it raises a big question for us.

  68. One that I want to unpack for the rest of our time today.

  69. Is it possible for us to share hope, which is what this whole series is about.

  70. Is it possible to share hope without radically altering our lifestyle?

  71. Now over the years, there have been many proponents of Christians adopting what could be called a simple lifestyle.

  72. Possibly the most famous historical model was John Wesley.

  73. When Wesley died, his estate consisted of a coat and two silver spoons.

  74. When I've mentioned this to people recently, they go, what did he have two spoons for?

  75. I mean, I don't know why he had two spoons.

  76. But it's not much.

  77. A coat and two silver spoons.

  78. And that was despite the fact that the sale of his sermons and his books meant that in the latter stages of his life,

  79. he earned as much as 1400 pounds a year.

  80. Which is equivalent nowadays of $331,000 a year in Australian dollars.

  81. When his income increased 40-fold over the years, his lifestyle never did.

  82. He was able to maintain the cost of his living to 40 pounds a year all of his life.

  83. That's basically $10,000 a year in today's money.

  84. Wesley once wrote,

  85. If I leave behind 10 pounds, you and all of humanity can bear witness against me that I lived and died a thief and a robber.

  86. In a sermon on Matthew chapter 6 verses 19 to 23,

    Matthew 6:19–23

  87. and the exhortation for us not to store up our treasures in heaven,

  88. sorry, not to store up our treasures on earth,

  89. he stated that any Christian who has more than the plain necessities of life lives in open, habitual denial of Christ,

  90. and they gain both riches and hell.

  91. So the idea of a simple lifestyle wasn't just confined to Wesley, though.

  92. This is not just one guy out there on the periphery.

  93. It was very common teaching in the evangelical churches of the 18th and 19th centuries.

  94. John Newton was another one.

  95. The Bible says two things very clearly about our lifestyle.

  96. Is Wesley right?

  97. Is the question.

  98. Well, let's have a look at what the Bible says about two things.

  99. And I'll give you the answers now, and then I'll unpack a bit more.

  100. First of all, it says moderate lifestyle.

  101. And secondly, it says be content with your lifestyle.

  102. Now, there are no lack of passages which urge Christians to live a moderate lifestyle.

  103. Hebrews 13 verse 5, let me just read that to you.

    Hebrews 13:5

  104. That is, we cannot be happy if we are not free from the love of money and covetedness,

  105. which is defined as a continual drive to increase the standard of our living.

  106. Hebrews 13 is not particularly specific in terms of understanding what that sort of standard of living might be.

  107. But 1 Timothy 6 verses 6 to 10 is much more specific.

    1 Timothy 6:6–10

  108. Let me read it to you.

  109. Godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.

  110. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

  111. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap,

  112. and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

  113. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

  114. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

  115. So up there earlier in that passage, talked about food and clothing.

  116. Some suggest that food and shelter, instead of food and clothing, is in fact a better translation.

  117. Either way, Paul seems to be saying here that we need a lifestyle that is sufficient enough to preserve our health.

  118. A lifestyle where we live below our means.

  119. Let me just clarify, below our means, not a lifestyle within our means, and certainly not above our means.

  120. Listen, what Paul is saying here is, with that you can be satisfied, you can be content.

  121. The word content occurs in both Hebrews 13 and in 1 Timothy 6.

  122. And it's a word that means genuine soul satisfaction.

  123. I'm filled up on the inside by Jesus.

  124. there is no anxiety there's no gnawing regret or resentment towards people who have what i don't

  125. have the difference between the christian and the non-christian is a trust in god for material

  126. provision now that doesn't mean that the christian has no motivation for making money or increasing

  127. their income there are i think at least two motivations in the bible to do that firstly

  128. there is the pursuit of excellence in our work the bible calls us to be skillful to work hard

  129. as a way of glorifying god and loving our neighbor making a contribution to shape the good of society

  130. hard work often increases income although it's a consequence rather than the motive

  131. it's the consequence not the motive proverbs 23 4 says do not wear yourself out to get rich

  132. the second motive to increase income is to be fruitful in good works

  133. paul was referring to thieves who had become christians when he wrote in ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  134. anyone who's been stealing must steal no longer but must work doing something useful with their own hands

  135. that they may have something to share with those in need

  136. so wealth is to be accumulated strictly for doing good works of mercy and spreading the gospel of the lord

  137. the lord jesus christ so matthew 6 makes it clear that wealth is not to be stored up for ourselves

  138. and this is my second point what where does wealth fit then wealth and god's calling on our life should we

  139. just therefore give all of our money away is substantial wealth if you see of someone who's

  140. substantially wealthy uh is that a sign that they are wicked that they lack love and they lack mercy

  141. well i don't think the bible supports either of those ideas the bible tells us several things about wealth

  142. firstly 1 timothy 6 verse 9 says that those who want to get rich fall into a trap and yet later in the same chapter

    1 Timothy 6:9

  143. it says command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth

  144. which is so uncertain but to put their hope in god who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment

  145. command them to do good to be rich in good deeds and to be generous and willing to share

  146. in this way they will lay up they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age

  147. so that they may take hold of the life which is truly life

  148. notice what paul doesn't say there he doesn't say you wealthy stop being wealthy

  149. that's not what he says he does however want them to think biblically about their wealth he wants them to

  150. have a gospel orientation towards their wealth he tells them that god gives the wealth so the rich

  151. person should not become arrogant and that's difficult for us to believe we often consciously or

  152. unconsciously subconsciously subconsciously put our hard our wealth down to our hard work and our abilities

  153. the the biblical perspective is that every ability that we have every effort every opportunity we have

  154. all of our efforts have been provided to us by god himself and they are god's gifts to us

  155. and the means by which wealth is accumulated then in verse 18 paul says he tells the rich to use their

  156. money so as to be rich in good deeds now this is not mere tokenism this directly echoes what jesus says

  157. in luke chapter 12 verse 33 sell your possessions give to the poor provide purses for yourselves that will

    Luke 12:33

  158. not wear out a treasure in heaven that will never fail when no thief comes near and no moth destroys

  159. and then in matthew 13 22 jesus offers a strong warning the seed falling among the thorn refers to someone

  160. who hears the word but the worries of this life the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word making it

  161. unfruitful so i think what jesus and paul are both saying here is that disposable wealth

  162. not put to use in god's work will threaten the very roots of your spiritual life

  163. what we must conclude from both jesus and paul is that while there might be rich christians

  164. there should not be rich living christians

  165. middle and upper income christians are not required to give away all of their money and their assets

  166. but they must invest in good deeds rather than in their own comfort a good steward for the lord knows that wealth

  167. if held and managed properly will produce more good deeds over a longer period of time than if it was just

  168. given away for good deeds all at once wealth is wrong and it is destructive if we build it up

  169. so that we can say the words of luke 19 sorry 12 verse 19 you have plenty of grain laid up for many years

  170. take life easy eat drink and be merry god calls such a person a fool

  171. notice though that the call to be content and to live a moderate lifestyle

  172. is written both to the affluent and those who have little

  173. in 1 timothy 6 verses 6 to 8

    1 Timothy 6:6–8

  174. it instructs the poor not to resent their lack of riches

  175. but to be satisfied with their modest economic state

  176. and his appeal instructs the rich not to be proud

  177. but to voluntarily be satisfied with a more modest standard of living also

  178. so how do we get the balance in our lifestyle

  179. let's bring some of these principles to bear on our lifestyle

  180. firstly first point we need to give we need to be radically generous to give

  181. until we feel the burden of the needy ourselves on our lifestyle

  182. the 17th century american pastor and theologian jonathan edwards gave a very vivid illustration of this

  183. he says a poor man is walking along with a burden

  184. a burden of discomfort and inconvenience

  185. when a christian comes along and says

  186. i can't afford to help the poor

  187. he says when a person comes along and says

  188. i can't afford to help the poor

  189. they're actually saying

  190. if i help you in this moment with your burden

  191. i will have to carry some of the burden

  192. it will cut into my lifestyle

  193. some of the poor man's burden

  194. would slide over onto me

  195. the helper and i will have to carry it

  196. edward responds

  197. that's the point

  198. that's the point

  199. that's what the bible is calling us to live out

  200. if our giving to the needy

  201. to poor

  202. to ministry

  203. to compassion

  204. means that we do not feel the burden

  205. it doesn't cut into our lifestyle at all

  206. edward says

  207. and i think the apostle paul says

  208. and jesus says

  209. give more

  210. it's possible to give

  211. 400 million dollars away

  212. and it will

  213. don't get me wrong

  214. it will do an enormous amount of good

  215. but if it hasn't put a dent in your lifestyle

  216. in such a way that you feel the burden

  217. of the recipients

  218. then you can't call it radical generosity

  219. you can call it kind

  220. but you can't call it radical generosity

  221. now this is a biblical principle

  222. that has ramifications for all of us

  223. edwards would say

  224. if he was standing here right now

  225. edwards would say

  226. that the family that can give away

  227. 10% of their income

  228. without any dent on their lifestyle

  229. he says

  230. you've got to give more

  231. this is a word to those

  232. who suggest

  233. that all they need to do

  234. is give 10%

  235. of their income

  236. no more

  237. of course

  238. bearing in mind

  239. that

  240. research

  241. in the western world

  242. indicates that

  243. only 5%

  244. of Christians

  245. actually give

  246. 10%

  247. or more

  248. of their income away

  249. and so frankly

  250. this word

  251. is to

  252. potentially

  253. 95% of us

  254. listening to it

  255. right now

  256. American author

  257. and pastor

  258. John Piper

  259. argues this point

  260. very strongly

  261. on the back of

  262. edwards comment

  263. he says

  264. it is a biblical truth

  265. beyond all dispute

  266. all of your money

  267. is God's

  268. Psalm 24

    Psalms 24:1

  269. verse 1

  270. and has been loaned

  271. to you

  272. as a steward

  273. to use

  274. in ways

  275. that maximize

  276. the glorification

  277. of God's mercy

  278. in the world

  279. Matthew 25

    Matthew 25:14–30

  280. verses 14

  281. to 30

  282. and it is irrational

  283. to think

  284. this is Piper still

  285. it is irrational

  286. to think

  287. that giving

  288. 10%

  289. of that money

  290. to church

  291. settles the issue

  292. of good stewardship

  293. in a world

  294. of such immense need

  295. and in a country

  296. of such immense luxury

  297. and under the commission

  298. of such a powerful Lord

  299. the issue

  300. of stewardship

  301. is not

  302. should I tithe

  303. but rather

  304. how much

  305. of God's

  306. trust fund

  307. dare I

  308. surround

  309. dare I use

  310. to surround

  311. myself

  312. in comforts

  313. that's the issue

  314. so that's the first thing

  315. we need to give

  316. until we feel

  317. the burden

  318. of the needy

  319. second

  320. this is the other

  321. side of the equation

  322. we must

  323. not be

  324. so unwise

  325. in our giving

  326. that we

  327. and our family

  328. become liabilities

  329. to others

  330. this is one of the most

  331. difficult balances

  332. to strike

  333. I think

  334. on the one hand

  335. you hear the likes

  336. of Wesley

  337. John Wesley

  338. John Piper

  339. Jonathan Edwards

  340. they're all John

  341. we hear them

  342. to say things like

  343. you shouldn't save

  344. lots of money

  345. and you should be

  346. radically generous

  347. and on the other hand

  348. 1 Timothy 5 verse 8

    1 Timothy 5:8

  349. says anyone

  350. who does not

  351. provide for their

  352. relatives

  353. and especially

  354. for their own

  355. household

  356. has denied the

  357. faith

  358. and is worse

  359. than any

  360. unbeliever

  361. now wisdom

  362. tells us

  363. that we must

  364. not give away

  365. our income

  366. and all of our

  367. possessions

  368. in such a way

  369. that our children

  370. our elderly

  371. parents

  372. or whoever it is

  373. become financial

  374. burdens

  375. for others

  376. to feed

  377. to house

  378. to clothe

  379. in future years

  380. now I think

  381. we have a tendency

  382. to rationalise

  383. too much

  384. investment

  385. into our

  386. family

  387. rather than

  388. in the poor

  389. our children

  390. are well

  391. provided for

  392. if they are

  393. clothed

  394. if they are

  395. schooled

  396. if they are

  397. fed

  398. and they have

  399. a roof over

  400. their head

  401. and they have

  402. access to

  403. medical attention

  404. they are well

  405. provided for

  406. and we teach

  407. our children

  408. a great lesson

  409. when with

  410. them

  411. as a family

  412. we work

  413. together

  414. to surrender

  415. our convenience

  416. and our comfort

  417. for the sake

  418. of the needy

  419. so perhaps

  420. it's best

  421. not to call

  422. us into

  423. simple living

  424. but to call

  425. us into

  426. justice

  427. living

  428. a justice

  429. lifestyle

  430. simple living

  431. is a

  432. helpful term

  433. but it

  434. carries the

  435. idea that

  436. it's an

  437. option for

  438. me

  439. what the

  440. Bible

  441. is calling

  442. us to

  443. is not

  444. an abstract

  445. exercise

  446. in self

  447. denial

  448. but rather

  449. as a means

  450. to an end

  451. in direct

  452. ministry

  453. to the

  454. needy

  455. how then

  456. do we

  457. determine

  458. do we

  459. determine

  460. how much

  461. to give

  462. away

  463. radical

  464. generosity

  465. cuts into

  466. our lifestyle

  467. in such

  468. a way

  469. that we

  470. feel the

  471. burden

  472. of the

  473. needy

  474. so this

  475. is a

  476. calling

  477. here for

  478. every person

  479. and family

  480. every church

  481. in Christ

  482. to live

  483. below

  484. their means

  485. below

  486. their means

  487. in order

  488. to share

  489. hope

  490. with

  491. others

  492. so let

  493. me

  494. point

  495. you

  496. to

  497. four

  498. things

  499. that we

  500. have an

  501. opportunity

  502. to address

  503. right now

  504. today

  505. by the end

  506. of today

  507. number one

  508. since

  509. COVID-19

  510. has hit

  511. us

  512. our own

  513. parish

  514. offertory

  515. has been

  516. down by

  517. $10,000

  518. a month

  519. that's the

  520. first thing

  521. where people

  522. were giving

  523. we're now

  524. pulling back

  525. number two

  526. we have

  527. raised

  528. from when

  529. I wrote

  530. this early

  531. this morning

  532. $10,944

  533. of our

  534. targeted

  535. $20,000

  536. towards

  537. Lowe's

  538. ministry

  539. of planting

  540. the church

  541. in the

  542. Gold Coast

  543. that is

  544. we have

  545. so far

  546. in the

  547. last five

  548. weeks

  549. got

  550. 54%

  551. of our

  552. target

  553. we have

  554. raised

  555. $4,376

  556. of our

  557. target

  558. $10,000

  559. for Narrabri

  560. Drought Appeal

  561. that's

  562. 43%

  563. of that

  564. target

  565. in the

  566. last five

  567. weeks

  568. and as

  569. you would

  570. also be

  571. aware

  572. we now

  573. have a

  574. St Paul's

  575. Hope Fund

  576. that is

  577. operating

  578. and we

  579. could do

  580. I think

  581. with at

  582. least

  583. $2,000

  584. in it

  585. to be

  586. ready

  587. to meet

  588. needs

  589. ready

  590. to meet

  591. needs

  592. as they

  593. arise

  594. let me

  595. just say

  596. that we

  597. have been

  598. in stronger

  599. positions

  600. than this

  601. in previous

  602. mission

  603. months

  604. it is

  605. possible

  606. that some

  607. of us

  608. right now

  609. are being

  610. cautious

  611. because of

  612. recent

  613. announcements

  614. of our

  615. country

  616. being

  617. in a

  618. recession

  619. I

  620. understand

  621. that

  622. let me

  623. just say

  624. though

  625. if you're

  626. sitting here

  627. and you're

  628. listening to

  629. this

  630. right now

  631. and you're

  632. a member

  633. of St Paul's

  634. if the

  635. income

  636. is still

  637. coming

  638. in

  639. today

  640. is the

  641. day to

  642. serve

  643. the Lord

  644. let him

  645. worry about

  646. tomorrow

  647. let him

  648. worry about

  649. a month

  650. and a year's

  651. time

  652. today

  653. is the

  654. day

  655. to

  656. serve

  657. him

  658. and

  659. trust

  660. him

  661. with

  662. the

  663. future

  664. heed

  665. this

  666. warning

  667. Jesus

  668. and the

  669. apostles

  670. considered

  671. money

  672. hazardous

  673. and

  674. helpful

  675. it's

  676. hazardous

  677. and

  678. therefore

  679. I

  680. encourage

  681. you

  682. to put

  683. limits

  684. on how

  685. much

  686. you

  687. keep

  688. for

  689. yourself

  690. don't

  691. put

  692. limits

  693. on how

  694. much

  695. you

  696. make

  697. but

  698. how

  699. much

  700. you

  701. keep

  702. secondly

  703. it's

  704. helpful

  705. which

  706. means

  707. you

  708. get

  709. and

  710. you

  711. get

  712. this

  713. incredible

  714. joy

  715. of

  716. giving

  717. more

  718. and

  719. more

  720. and

  721. sharing

  722. the

  723. radical

  724. generosity

  725. of the

  726. Lord

  727. Jesus

  728. Christ

  729. to

  730. us

  731. to

  732. others

  733. Amen
