  1. Good morning and welcome to St. Paul's this morning across the live stream.

  2. It's now three months since we stopped gathering on site for our Sunday services.

  3. So if this is the first time you've tuned in, it's great to have you here.

  4. And welcome to all the St. Paul's family out there.

  5. If you don't know who I am, I'm Steve Jeffrey.

  6. I'm the senior pastor of St. Paul's.

  7. And so it's wonderful for me to be able to kick off this brand new series in Ruth with us this morning.

  8. It is the first time in just over 100 years that we have not been able to hold public services

  9. and to not be able to do so for three months, not be able to meet face to face due to this pandemic has been an unusual season.

  10. We are now, however, starting to slowly regather, having been scattered for three months.

  11. We've been, if you like, away scattered.

  12. We're now slowly regathering and coming back again.

  13. This theme, which has been the theme for us over these three months of going away and coming back,

  14. is in fact part of the rhythm of normal life.

  15. What we do so much of it in terms of going away and coming back,

  16. we don't even think that's in fact what we're doing.

  17. We go to school and we come home again.

  18. We go to the playground, to the shops, to restaurants, to work, and then we come back home.

  19. We depart for a holiday and then we come back home.

  20. We have 20-year-olds who move out and then they come back home.

  21. This constant pattern.

  22. In fact, I can't believe I'm actually saying this,

  23. but perhaps this opera, Home and Away, is tuning into something for us in life,

  24. part of the rhythms of life.

  25. Home and away, it's what they do.

  26. Of course, sometimes the going away is forced on us by circumstances

  27. and coming back is not always possible.

  28. For instance, the transition into a care facility,

  29. refugees fleeing a terrible situation in their home,

  30. and even death itself is a going away but not coming back.

  31. This theme, this pattern, if you like, of going away and coming back

  32. runs through many of the stories of the Bible.

  33. In fact, one of the grand narratives of the whole Bible,

  34. which begins with people being scattered from God because of sin,

  35. but ends with people being gathered back to God because of his rescue plan

  36. and salvation plan for them into their eternal home,

  37. is the grand narrative of the Bible.

  38. So many stories of salvation of the Bible carry this theme.

  39. Abraham went down to Egypt because of a famine and later returned home.

  40. The whole family of Israel went down to Egypt because of a famine

  41. and then returned back to the promised land, their home.

  42. Later on in their history, Israel again will go into exile

  43. because of a spiritual famine, and God will bring them back home again.

  44. And of course, what Adrian read out to us,

  45. one of the more famous passages in the New Testament of the prodigal son

  46. who went down away from his home to a foreign land,

  47. got hit with a famine, and then came back home again.

  48. So the whole Bible story is about people leaving paradise with God

  49. and then God bringing them back, saving his people

  50. and returning them back to himself.

  51. And that means that as we open up the very first chapter of the book of Ruth

  52. with this description of people leaving home and coming back again

  53. because of a famine should alert us to something is big in the wind.

  54. Something significant is happening in this book.

  55. It's not just a Old Testament rom-com.

  56. There's something deeper, bigger happening in the book of Ruth.

  57. It's the old pattern of God working some act of salvation

  58. when his people leave their land and his presence,

  59. and then he brings them back.

  60. So if you've got your Bibles there, I'd love it if you could turn to Ruth chapter 1

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  61. and also the St. Paul's app.

  62. If you click into there, you'll see an outline for today's message.

  63. I've really got two major points with a few little sub points in there,

  64. but two major points, really simple, going away and coming back.

  65. I considered calling it home and away,

  66. but we'll just go with going away, coming back.

  67. So going away to ruin is my first point.

  68. Israel's ruin, according to verse 1 of chapter 1,

  69. the very first verse of this book is this story of Ruth

  70. takes place during the time of the judges of Israel.

  71. This was a 400-year period after Israel entered the promised land under Joshua

  72. and before there were any kings in Israel.

  73. It's roughly about 1500 BC to 1100 BC.

  74. And so verse 1 is not just a date stamp on the book

  75. so we can locate it historically.

  76. It is, in fact, a theological description

  77. of the times in which these events of the book of Ruth take place.

  78. When I preached through the book of Judges about two years ago,

  79. I said you could summarise the message of the book of Judges

  80. as despicable people doing deplorable things.

  81. That's the summary of this time.

  82. It records a history of murder and assassination

  83. and massacres of immorality and lawlessness and unfaithfulness.

  84. In fact, right towards the end of the book of Judges,

    Judges 21:25

  85. chapter 21, verse 25, it says,

  86. in those days Israel had no king

  87. and so everyone did as they saw fit.

  88. Pretty much a description of modern society, really.

  89. Everyone does as they see fit.

  90. But for Israel, it was a very dark time.

  91. The people would sin.

  92. God would hand them over to their sin.

  93. He would send enemies against them

  94. and the people would cry out for help.

  95. And then God would mercifully raise up a judge,

  96. a rescuer for his people and deliver them,

  97. bring them back to himself.

  98. A repeated pattern of the nation going away from God

  99. and God bringing them back home to himself.

  100. And by the end of the book of Judges,

  101. we have a picture of a nation

  102. that has really just completely lost its way.

  103. What the book of Ruth does for us

  104. is it gives us a glimpse

  105. into the hidden work of God

  106. during the worst of times.

  107. The book of Ruth is a zooming in

  108. on the book of Judges, if you like,

  109. and one family during these dark days.

  110. From the narrative of the nation

  111. in the book of Judges,

  112. we now focus on one family.

  113. We go from a nation in ruin

  114. to a family in ruin.

  115. And to, in fact, a life in ruin.

  116. It was during these dark days and difficult days

  117. that a man moved his family out of Israel.

  118. A move that saw his family come to ruin.

  119. Verse one again.

  120. In those days when the judges ruled,

  121. there was a famine in the land.

  122. And so a man named,

  123. a man from Bethlehem in Judea,

  124. together with his wife and his two sons,

  125. went to live for a while in the country of Moab.

  126. Now the ultimate irony has occurred.

  127. Bethlehem, which means

  128. house of bread is a place of no food.

  129. Verses one to five in chapter one

  130. just moves so fast.

  131. But ultimately they paint a picture of ruin.

  132. First, there is a famine in Judah.

  133. Then there's a decision to relocate for this family

  134. to Moab, a pagan land with its foreign gods.

  135. Then grief upon famine strikes

  136. as Elimelech, the husband to Naomi, dies.

  137. Then in verse four,

  138. Naomi and Elimelech's two sons

  139. take Moabite wives,

  140. one named Orpah, the other named Ruth.

  141. And again, the hand of God falls.

  142. Verse five sums up Naomi's tragedy.

  143. After 10 years of childless marriages,

  144. both Marlon and Kilion also died.

  145. And Naomi was left without her two sons

  146. and her husband.

  147. She's a foreigner, a foreign woman.

  148. In a patriarchal society,

  149. Naomi is bereft.

  150. Along with her husband and sons,

  151. she attempted to escape the famine

  152. in Bethlehem.

  153. I'm sorry, but all that has happened

  154. is for her a descent into emptiness.

  155. A grasp for hope,

  156. a grasp for future,

  157. resulted in emptiness.

  158. The move to Moab has been disastrous.

  159. Naomi has hit rock bottom.

  160. She is empty.

  161. She's bereft.

  162. She's destitute.

  163. She went there in a search of life

  164. and she has become empty.

  165. And the implicit question

  166. in these very first verses

  167. is what future does Naomi have?

  168. Can she possibly recover from this?

  169. Will she remain destitute and empty?

  170. And then we are told in verse six,

  171. Naomi gets a word.

  172. And at first,

  173. it appears to be a word of hope.

  174. But is it hope for Naomi?

  175. It says,

  176. the Lord has come to the aid of his people

  177. by providing food for them.

  178. How was she to feel about that?

  179. The Lord came to the aid of his people

  180. in Bethlehem.

  181. But she wasn't one of them.

  182. She wasn't there.

  183. Was her going away a terrible mistake?

  184. She didn't just leave Bethlehem,

  185. but also the people of God

  186. and her God

  187. and all of her hope as well.

  188. She had brought shame to herself,

  189. to her people,

  190. to her God.

  191. And so,

  192. does she deserve

  193. what our society

  194. would call

  195. getting cancelled?

  196. Up to the end of verse five,

  197. Naomi

  198. is just like

  199. the prodigal son

  200. in Luke 15

  201. that Adrian read out to us.

  202. He thought

  203. life would be better

  204. in a faraway country

  205. away from the rule

  206. and the oversight

  207. and the provision

  208. of his father.

  209. But like Naomi,

  210. he too

  211. hits rock bottom

  212. and he is bereft,

  213. he is empty,

  214. he is hungry,

  215. he is lonely.

  216. What the story

  217. of the prodigal son

  218. is meant

  219. to be

  220. portraying to us

  221. is the theme

  222. of the Bible.

  223. It is a vivid picture

  224. of humanity's ruin

  225. as they walk

  226. away from God.

  227. The Bible

  228. says

  229. we have all,

  230. like sheep

  231. have gone astray,

  232. we have all

  233. wandered away

  234. from God

  235. who has made us,

  236. made all things

  237. and provides

  238. all good things

  239. for us

  240. and the Bible

  241. calls it sin.

  242. It's the attitude

  243. that says

  244. we don't need God

  245. in our life,

  246. we don't want God

  247. in our life

  248. and that attitude

  249. results in actions

  250. and thoughts,

  251. behaviours

  252. that sees us

  253. as individuals,

  254. as societies

  255. living

  256. as we

  257. see

  258. fit

  259. in our

  260. own

  261. eyes.

  262. Living

  263. as we

  264. see fit

  265. in our

  266. own

  267. eyes

  268. without

  269. God

  270. and it

  271. always

  272. feels

  273. free

  274. for a

  275. season

  276. in the

  277. same way

  278. that jumping

  279. out of an

  280. aeroplane

  281. feels free

  282. for a

  283. season

  284. until you

  285. realise

  286. that you

  287. don't have

  288. a

  289. parachute.

  290. In Luke

    Luke 15:14

  291. 15 verse

  292. 14 we

  293. read of the

  294. prodigal son

  295. in Jesus'

  296. parable,

  297. after he

  298. had spent

  299. everything

  300. there was

  301. a severe

  302. famine in

  303. the whole

  304. country

  305. and he

  306. began

  307. to be

  308. in need.

  309. His bid

  310. for freedom

  311. resulted

  312. in

  313. slavery.

  314. Verse

  315. 15,

  316. so he

  317. went and

  318. he hired

  319. himself

  320. out

  321. and the

  322. word

  323. literally

  324. means

  325. he

  326. attached

  327. himself

  328. to a

  329. citizen

  330. of that

  331. country

  332. who sent

  333. him to

  334. his fields

  335. to feed

  336. the pigs.

  337. This

  338. young guy

  339. has to

  340. sell

  341. himself

  342. as a

  343. slave

  344. to work

  345. in a

  346. foreign

  347. pig pen.

  348. Life

  349. hits rock

  350. bottom.

  351. His bid

  352. for the

  353. better life

  354. the free

  355. life ends

  356. up in

  357. slavery

  358. instead.

  359. You see

  360. when you

  361. break your

  362. attachment

  363. with God

  364. you will

  365. end up

  366. attached to

  367. another

  368. and that

  369. attachment

  370. will not

  371. be

  372. sonship

  373. and freedom

  374. it will

  375. be

  376. slavery.

  377. It will

  378. desire

  379. you.

  380. You will

  381. have to

  382. live for

  383. it.

  384. It may

  385. be romance,

  386. it may be

  387. a career,

  388. it may be

  389. reputation,

  390. comfort,

  391. leisure,

  392. culture,

  393. it might be

  394. family.

  395. The attachment

  396. might be

  397. crude,

  398. it might

  399. be

  400. refined.

  401. If we

  402. break loose

  403. from God

  404. we will

  405. be attached

  406. to another

  407. and that

  408. other will

  409. require you

  410. to sacrifice

  411. everything for

  412. it.

  413. In the

  414. end,

  415. whether crude

  416. or refined,

  417. this attachment

  418. will send us

  419. to the

  420. pig pen.

  421. One of the

  422. key

  423. challenges

  424. early in

  425. the book

  426. of Ruth

  427. is trying

  428. to work

  429. out

  430. how we

  431. meant to

  432. feel about

  433. the characters

  434. of this

  435. book.

  436. Because

  437. traditionally

  438. it's taken

  439. as a bit

  440. of an

  441. Old Testament

  442. rob-com

  443. where

  444. just people

  445. of virtue.

  446. And yet

  447. God had

  448. warned

  449. Israel

  450. in

  451. Deuteronomy

  452. 32

  453. that he

  454. would send

  455. them

  456. famine

  457. if they

  458. worshipped

  459. idols

  460. as they

  461. did in

  462. the days

  463. of the

  464. judges.

  465. You see

  466. Elimelech

  467. had a

  468. choice to

  469. make.

  470. He had a

  471. road to

  472. choose

  473. which one

  474. he would

  475. go.

  476. He could

  477. stay in

  478. Bethlehem

  479. the empty

  480. bread

  481. basket

  482. of Judah

  483. mourning

  484. the sin

  485. that

  486. surrounded

  487. him

  488. in his

  489. society

  490. and

  491. trusting

  492. God

  493. for the

  494. provision

  495. for his

  496. family.

  497. Alternatively

  498. he could

  499. leave the

  500. promised land

  501. behind

  502. in pursuit

  503. of greener

  504. fields.

  505. theologically

  506. these are

  507. not equal

  508. choices.

  509. This is

  510. not simply

  511. Elimelech

  512. choosing to

  513. move to

  514. another city

  515. because he's

  516. got a job

  517. offer there.

  518. God had

  519. rescued his

  520. people from

  521. slavery in

  522. Egypt.

  523. He brought

  524. them to

  525. the land of

  526. Canaan,

  527. the promised

  528. land.

  529. This was the

  530. land that God

  531. would dwell with

  532. his people in

  533. harmony as they

  534. lived out their

  535. relationship with

  536. him as a

  537. redeemed

  538. people.

  539. However,

  540. these people

  541. rebelled against

  542. him as we see

  543. again and again

  544. in the book of

  545. Judges.

  546. There was no

  547. king in

  548. Elimelech's

  549. life and

  550. therefore,

  551. like so many

  552. of his

  553. countrymen,

  554. he chose to

  555. do what was

  556. best in his

  557. own eyes.

  558. It's the same

  559. choice that each

  560. of us face in

  561. life.

  562. I live for

  563. myself and

  564. do what I

  565. think is best

  566. with my life

  567. or I follow

  568. the created

  569. God and what

  570. he determines

  571. is best

  572. for life.

  573. And the

  574. Bible is

  575. explicit.

  576. when you

  577. choose to

  578. live life

  579. our way,

  580. when we

  581. do that,

  582. eternal

  583. ruin is

  584. the future.

  585. So is

  586. Naomi's

  587. emptiness

  588. God's

  589. judgment on

  590. her life?

  591. love.

  592. The

  593. interesting

  594. thing about

  595. this text

  596. is it

  597. doesn't

  598. tell us.

  599. It's not

  600. made explicit

  601. in this

  602. text in

  603. the way

  604. that it

  605. is in

  606. so many

  607. other places

  608. including the

  609. book of

  610. Judges.

  611. The people

  612. did that

  613. and God

  614. says I'm

  615. going to

  616. judge you.

  617. He doesn't

  618. do that

  619. here.

  620. And yet

  621. Naomi is

  622. in no

  623. doubt about

  624. the source

  625. of her

  626. ruin.

  627. Verse 13

  628. she says

  629. the Lord's

  630. hand has

  631. turned against

  632. me.

  633. Then again

  634. at the end

  635. of the chapter

  636. she says

  637. the same

  638. thing.

  639. In verse

  640. 20

  641. the Almighty

  642. has made

  643. my life

  644. very bitter.

  645. I went

  646. away full

  647. but the

  648. Lord has

  649. brought me

  650. back empty.

  651. The Lord

  652. has afflicted

  653. me.

  654. The Almighty

  655. has brought

  656. misfortune

  657. upon me.

  658. she says

  659. it's God

  660. who's done

  661. it.

  662. Now

  663. frankly

  664. I would

  665. take Naomi's

  666. theology

  667. here any

  668. day over

  669. the sentimental

  670. views of

  671. God which

  672. dominate the

  673. books of

  674. many Christian

  675. bookshelves.

  676. Naomi is

  677. sure of

  678. three things

  679. in this

  680. text.

  681. God exists,

  682. God is

  683. sovereign and

  684. God has

  685. inflicted her.

  686. God the

  687. Almighty

  688. reigns in

  689. all the

  690. affairs of

  691. people.

  692. He rules

  693. the nation

  694. and he

  695. rules the

  696. families and

  697. he rules

  698. Naomi's

  699. life.

  700. He gives

  701. rain, he

  702. takes it

  703. away, he

  704. gives life,

  705. he takes

  706. it away.

  707. In him

  708. we live,

  709. we move,

  710. we have

  711. our being.

  712. He is the

  713. all encompassing,

  714. the all

  715. pervading

  716. reality of

  717. life.

  718. And Naomi

  719. was right

  720. and we

  721. should join

  722. her in

  723. this

  724. conviction.

  725. God the

  726. Almighty

  727. reigns in

  728. all the

  729. affairs of

  730. people.

  731. So Naomi

  732. is right

  733. here to

  734. believe in

  735. a sovereign

  736. almighty God

  737. who governs

  738. the affairs

  739. and the

  740. nations and

  741. the families

  742. and gives

  743. each day

  744. its parts

  745. of both

  746. pain and

  747. pleasure.

  748. He does

  749. both.

  750. But what

  751. Naomi needs

  752. is to

  753. open her

  754. eyes a

  755. little bit

  756. more to

  757. the signs

  758. of his

  759. merciful

  760. purposes in

  761. her life.

  762. If she

  763. doesn't,

  764. then her

  765. theology just

  766. becomes

  767. determination

  768. fatalism,

  769. fatalism,

  770. an almighty

  771. being who's

  772. not personal,

  773. not relational

  774. and certainly

  775. not good.

  776. While she

  777. can't see it

  778. straight away,

  779. it's in

  780. fact in

  781. heading home

  782. that we

  783. see God's

  784. merciful purposes

  785. for her being

  786. worked out in

  787. her life.

  788. That's the

  789. second point I

  790. want to get

  791. to.

  792. In

  793. verses 7

  794. to 18

  795. of chapter

  796. 1,

  797. the writer

  798. here devotes

  799. a large

  800. chunk of

  801. space to

  802. the journey

  803. home.

  804. Five verses

  805. is all it

  806. took.

  807. Five verses

  808. to describe

  809. the descent

  810. to Moab,

  811. the tragedy

  812. that struck,

  813. but more

  814. than double

  815. that on the

  816. journey back

  817. to Bethlehem.

  818. And most

  819. of these

  820. verses here

  821. are in

  822. fact Naomi's

  823. efforts to

  824. try and

  825. dissuade

  826. her daughter-in-laws

  827. from returning

  828. with her.

  829. And so

  830. what therefore

  831. stands out

  832. in these

  833. verses is

  834. Ruth's

  835. faithfulness

  836. to Naomi.

  837. In fact,

  838. one of God's

  839. mercies to

  840. Naomi.

  841. It's quite

  842. amazing.

  843. Verse 14

  844. says that

  845. Orpah kissed

  846. Naomi goodbye

  847. but Ruth

  848. clung to

  849. her.

  850. And that

  851. is all the

  852. more amazing

  853. after Naomi's

  854. grim description

  855. of what their

  856. future life

  857. with her

  858. would be

  859. like.

  860. Ruth stays

  861. with her

  862. in spite of

  863. an apparent

  864. hopeless future

  865. of widowhood

  866. and childlessness.

  867. Naomi paints

  868. a future

  869. that is

  870. black.

  871. And Ruth

  872. took her

  873. hand

  874. and walked

  875. into it

  876. with her.

  877. What a

  878. blessing.

  879. And the

  880. amazing words

  881. of Ruth

  882. are found

  883. in verse

  884. 16.

  885. Have a look

  886. at it

  887. with me.

  888. Don't

  889. urge me

  890. to leave

  891. you or

  892. to turn

  893. back from

  894. you.

  895. Where you

  896. go, I

  897. will go.

  898. Where you

  899. stay, I

  900. will stay.

  901. Your people

  902. will be my

  903. people.

  904. Your God

  905. will be my

  906. God.

  907. Where you

  908. die, I

  909. will die

  910. and there

  911. I'll be

  912. buried.

  913. May the

  914. Lord deal

  915. with me.

  916. Be it

  917. ever so

  918. severely

  919. if even

  920. death

  921. separates you

  922. and me.

  923. Now the

  924. more you

  925. ponder these

  926. words, the

  927. more amazing

  928. they become.

  929. Ruth's

  930. commitment to

  931. her destitute

  932. mother-in-law

  933. is simply

  934. astonishing.

  935. It is a

  936. picture of

  937. commitment

  938. which is

  939. God's

  940. commitment

  941. to Naomi.

  942. It means

  943. for Ruth

  944. here, leaving

  945. her own

  946. family, her

  947. own land.

  948. It means

  949. as far as

  950. she knows, a

  951. life of

  952. widowhood and

  953. childlessness

  954. because Naomi

  955. has no man

  956. to give her.

  957. And if she

  958. marries another

  959. non-relative

  960. Naomi, her

  961. commitment to

  962. Naomi's

  963. family is

  964. cut at

  965. that point.

  966. It ceases.

  967. It's lost.

  968. It means

  969. going to an

  970. unknown land

  971. with a new

  972. people, with a

  973. new custom,

  974. with a new

  975. language.

  976. And it was

  977. in fact a

  978. commitment even

  979. deeper than

  980. marriage.

  981. Where you

  982. die, I

  983. will die

  984. and there

  985. I will be

  986. buried.

  987. May the

  988. Lord deal

  989. with me

  990. be it

  991. ever so

  992. severely

  993. if even

  994. death

  995. separates

  996. you and

  997. me.

  998. In

  999. other words,

  1000. Ruth says,

  1001. I will

  1002. never

  1003. return home.

  1004. Even

  1005. when you

  1006. die, my

  1007. commitment to

  1008. you is not

  1009. finished.

  1010. the most

  1011. amazing

  1012. commitment of

  1013. all is in

  1014. verse 16.

  1015. Your God

  1016. will be my

  1017. God.

  1018. Naomi has

  1019. just said

  1020. in verse

  1021. 13,

  1022. saying,

  1023. the Lord's

  1024. hand has

  1025. turned against

  1026. me.

  1027. Naomi's

  1028. experience of

  1029. God in

  1030. this moment

  1031. was bitterness.

  1032. And in

  1033. spite of

  1034. this, Ruth

  1035. forsakes her

  1036. religious heritage

  1037. and makes the

  1038. God of

  1039. Israel her

  1040. God.

  1041. Somehow or

  1042. other, Ruth

  1043. had come to

  1044. trust in

  1045. Naomi's God

  1046. in spite of

  1047. Naomi's

  1048. bitter

  1049. experiences.

  1050. That did

  1051. not turn

  1052. her away.

  1053. Ruth's

  1054. faith in

  1055. God sees

  1056. beyond the

  1057. present

  1058. setbacks,

  1059. the present

  1060. bitter

  1061. setbacks,

  1062. freedom from

  1063. the securities

  1064. and the

  1065. comforts of

  1066. the world

  1067. and the

  1068. courage to

  1069. venture to

  1070. the unknown

  1071. and the

  1072. strange.

  1073. So what

  1074. called Naomi

  1075. home?

  1076. Even in

  1077. Naomi's

  1078. bitter talk

  1079. about God

  1080. punishing her,

  1081. there is an

  1082. acknowledgement

  1083. here of

  1084. his sovereign

  1085. grace.

  1086. In verse

  1087. 21,

  1088. she

  1089. acknowledges,

  1090. the Lord

  1091. has brought

  1092. me back.

  1093. Her

  1094. husband made

  1095. the decision

  1096. to leave,

  1097. but the

  1098. Lord has

  1099. brought her

  1100. back.

  1101. And while

  1102. in this

  1103. moment she

  1104. thinks she's

  1105. coming back

  1106. empty,

  1107. I mean she's

  1108. roost with

  1109. her, she

  1110. obviously not

  1111. focused on

  1112. that very

  1113. much,

  1114. she thinks

  1115. she's coming

  1116. back empty

  1117. but it is

  1118. God who

  1119. provides the

  1120. delicate touch

  1121. of hope at

  1122. the end of

  1123. verse 22.

  1124. And this is an

  1125. amazing word of

  1126. hope,

  1127. they arrived

  1128. in Bethlehem

  1129. as the

  1130. barley harvest

  1131. was beginning.

  1132. You see,

  1133. it wasn't

  1134. just

  1135. emptiness

  1136. that brought

  1137. her back,

  1138. it was

  1139. news that

  1140. brought her

  1141. back.

  1142. It was in

  1143. fact good

  1144. news that

  1145. brought her

  1146. back home.

  1147. News about

  1148. something that

  1149. God had

  1150. done brought

  1151. her back.

  1152. The Lord

  1153. had visited

  1154. his people

  1155. and he had

  1156. ended the

  1157. famine.

  1158. It was good

  1159. news that

  1160. called her

  1161. back home.

  1162. She wasn't

  1163. just coming

  1164. back to

  1165. Bethlehem,

  1166. she was

  1167. coming back

  1168. to her

  1169. God.

  1170. You see,

  1171. like the

  1172. book of

  1173. Judges,

  1174. the book

  1175. of Ruth

  1176. is just

  1177. pure

  1178. gospel,

  1179. pure,

  1180. good,

  1181. news.

  1182. It reveals

  1183. the God

  1184. of mercy

  1185. and long

  1186. suffering

  1187. patients who

  1188. continually

  1189. works in

  1190. and through

  1191. and for

  1192. his people.

  1193. It was a

  1194. truth at a

  1195. national level

  1196. and we will

  1197. see in the

  1198. coming weeks

  1199. that it is

  1200. true at a

  1201. personal,

  1202. family,

  1203. individual level

  1204. too.

  1205. God is at

  1206. work in the

  1207. worst of

  1208. times.

  1209. God

  1210. and what's

  1211. more,

  1212. this sovereign

  1213. God keeps

  1214. doing it

  1215. despite his

  1216. people constant

  1217. resistance to

  1218. his purposes.

  1219. God

  1220. relentlessly

  1221. offers his

  1222. grace to

  1223. people who

  1224. neither deserve

  1225. it,

  1226. they're not

  1227. seeking it,

  1228. not even

  1229. appreciating it,

  1230. even after

  1231. they've been

  1232. saved by it.

  1233. So after

  1234. ten years

  1235. abandoning her

  1236. God and

  1237. her people

  1238. and her

  1239. land,

  1240. what sort

  1241. of welcome

  1242. do you think

  1243. Naomi should

  1244. receive

  1245. returning home?

  1246. what about

  1247. the prodigal

  1248. son in

  1249. Luke 15?

  1250. How would

  1251. you respond

  1252. to a

  1253. child who

  1254. has basically

  1255. wished you

  1256. were dead,

  1257. didn't want

  1258. anything to

  1259. do with you

  1260. except the

  1261. inheritance?

  1262. Nothing with

  1263. you again,

  1264. ever.

  1265. The father

  1266. in the

  1267. parable of

  1268. the prodigal

  1269. son in

  1270. Luke 15,

  1271. it is obvious

  1272. that he is

  1273. not sitting

  1274. in his

  1275. living room

  1276. with his

  1277. feet up

  1278. waiting for

  1279. his wayward

  1280. son to

  1281. come crawling

  1282. through the

  1283. door and

  1284. his hands

  1285. and knees

  1286. groveling

  1287. and begging

  1288. for restoration.

  1289. Verse 20

  1290. tells us

  1291. that this

  1292. man,

  1293. this father

  1294. ran to

  1295. meet his

  1296. son,

  1297. embraced

  1298. him,

  1299. kissed

  1300. him again

  1301. and again

  1302. and again,

  1303. reinstates

  1304. him to

  1305. full

  1306. membership

  1307. of the

  1308. family

  1309. and calls

  1310. for a

  1311. celebration

  1312. and we

  1313. are told

  1314. in Luke

  1315. 15 that

  1316. the only

  1317. emotion

  1318. the father

  1319. felt was

  1320. compassion.

  1321. This father

  1322. thinks nothing

  1323. of his

  1324. personal loss,

  1325. nothing of

  1326. his financial

  1327. loss,

  1328. nothing of

  1329. the damage

  1330. to his

  1331. reputation

  1332. in the

  1333. community,

  1334. nothing of

  1335. his own

  1336. personal

  1337. shame.

  1338. what an

  1339. extraordinary

  1340. welcome

  1341. and we

  1342. are told

  1343. in Luke

  1344. 15 the

  1345. reason why

  1346. Jesus told

  1347. this story

  1348. is because

  1349. he was

  1350. saying,

  1351. I am

  1352. the father

  1353. who welcomes

  1354. the son.

  1355. when sinners

  1356. turn from

  1357. their sin

  1358. and accept

  1359. my fellowship

  1360. as the

  1361. joy of

  1362. their lives,

  1363. they have

  1364. come home

  1365. to God

  1366. through me

  1367. and God

  1368. is glad

  1369. and he

  1370. celebrates.

  1371. It's a

  1372. wonderful

  1373. picture of

  1374. the grace

  1375. and the

  1376. mercy and

  1377. the love

  1378. of the

  1379. compassion

  1380. of God.

  1381. The God

  1382. of the

  1383. Bible

  1384. is not

  1385. into the

  1386. cancel

  1387. culture

  1388. that we

  1389. currently

  1390. exist in

  1391. where you

  1392. make one

  1393. mistake

  1394. on social

  1395. media

  1396. and you

  1397. are what?

  1398. Your

  1399. reputation

  1400. is ruined.

  1401. You will

  1402. never live

  1403. it down.

  1404. A shame

  1405. that will be

  1406. brought back

  1407. up again

  1408. and again

  1409. and again.

  1410. the Bible

  1411. tells us

  1412. as far

  1413. as Psalm

  1414. 103

  1415. tells us

  1416. in the

  1417. Bible

  1418. as far

  1419. as the

  1420. east

  1421. is from

  1422. the west

  1423. so far

  1424. has God

  1425. removed

  1426. our sin

  1427. from us

  1428. and Isaiah

  1429. tells us

  1430. he's forgotten

  1431. them

  1432. never to be

  1433. brought up

  1434. again

  1435. against us.

  1436. The whole

  1437. story of the

  1438. Bible

  1439. is about

  1440. the human

  1441. race

  1442. going away

  1443. from God

  1444. and his

  1445. great plan

  1446. of salvation

  1447. of bringing

  1448. them back

  1449. again

  1450. and at

  1451. the centre

  1452. of that

  1453. plan

  1454. is the

  1455. Lord

  1456. Jesus

  1457. Christ

  1458. because

  1459. it is

  1460. good news

  1461. about Jesus

  1462. that calls

  1463. us back

  1464. home to

  1465. God.

  1466. The good

  1467. news that

  1468. calls us

  1469. back

  1470. is about

  1471. something

  1472. else

  1473. that God

  1474. has done

  1475. in Bethlehem

  1476. again

  1477. but for

  1478. all of

  1479. humanity.

  1480. And it's

  1481. infinitely better

  1482. news than

  1483. Naomi heard

  1484. from Bethlehem

  1485. that turned

  1486. her around

  1487. and back

  1488. home.

  1489. The core

  1490. message of

  1491. Christianity

  1492. is that

  1493. in Jesus

  1494. God

  1495. comes to

  1496. running

  1497. runs to

  1498. us and

  1499. meets us.

  1500. The king

  1501. of the

  1502. universe

  1503. in all

  1504. his splendor

  1505. and glory

  1506. came to

  1507. the dirt

  1508. of Bethlehem.

  1509. Came to

  1510. the dirt

  1511. of Bethlehem,

  1512. lived a

  1513. life of

  1514. obscurity

  1515. amongst us,

  1516. worked as

  1517. a carpenter.

  1518. God the

  1519. son left

  1520. his place

  1521. of abundance

  1522. and takes

  1523. on our

  1524. emptiness

  1525. so that we

  1526. can have

  1527. his place

  1528. of abundance.

  1529. Jesus

  1530. left his

  1531. place of

  1532. blessing

  1533. and abundance

  1534. of glory

  1535. in heaven

  1536. entered

  1537. himself

  1538. for us

  1539. not just

  1540. in the

  1541. dirt of

  1542. Bethlehem

  1543. but by

  1544. shedding

  1545. his blood

  1546. on a

  1547. cross

  1548. outside of

  1549. Jerusalem.

  1550. As Jesus

  1551. was dying

  1552. on the

  1553. cross

  1554. he cried

  1555. out

  1556. in every

  1557. other

  1558. instance

  1559. in the

  1560. New

  1561. Testament

  1562. whenever

  1563. he speaks

  1564. to his

  1565. father he

  1566. calls him

  1567. father

  1568. only on

  1569. the cross

  1570. he says

  1571. my God

  1572. my God

  1573. why have

  1574. you forsaken

  1575. me?

  1576. He went

  1577. into exile

  1578. removed

  1579. away from

  1580. the presence

  1581. of the

  1582. father

  1583. so that

  1584. we can

  1585. be brought

  1586. back in.

  1587. He was

  1588. cancelled

  1589. so that

  1590. we can

  1591. be forgiven.

  1592. He took

  1593. our sin

  1594. he faced

  1595. our bitterness

  1596. and in

  1597. doing so

  1598. he turned

  1599. away from

  1600. us

  1601. so that

  1602. we might

  1603. be blessed.

  1604. He took

  1605. our

  1606. spiritual

  1607. famine

  1608. so that

  1609. we might

  1610. have

  1611. his

  1612. spiritual

  1613. feast.

  1614. You see

  1615. the good

  1616. news here

  1617. is that

  1618. don't ever

  1619. think the

  1620. sin of

  1621. your past

  1622. means there's

  1623. no hope

  1624. for the

  1625. future.

  1626. God

  1627. knows

  1628. exactly

  1629. what you

  1630. are like

  1631. and what

  1632. I am

  1633. like

  1634. deepest

  1635. down in

  1636. the

  1637. recesses

  1638. of our

  1639. hearts

  1640. and yet

  1641. he still

  1642. welcomes

  1643. us.

  1644. His love

  1645. is

  1646. unconditional.

  1647. It isn't

  1648. based on

  1649. what we

  1650. are like

  1651. it is

  1652. based on

  1653. what he

  1654. is like

  1655. and he

  1656. calls us

  1657. home to

  1658. him.

  1659. Come home

  1660. to the

  1661. God

  1662. who made

  1663. you and

  1664. loves you

  1665. and is the

  1666. only one

  1667. who can

  1668. fill the

  1669. emptiness

  1670. the

  1671. emptiest

  1672. and meet

  1673. your deepest

  1674. need of

  1675. your heart.

  1676. God's

  1677. providence in

  1678. Naomi's

  1679. life

  1680. is

  1681. hard

  1682. and

  1683. sometimes

  1684. God's

  1685. providence

  1686. in our

  1687. life

  1688. is

  1689. hard.

  1690. He

  1691. had

  1692. dealt

  1693. bitterly

  1694. with

  1695. Naomi

  1696. at

  1697. least

  1698. in the

  1699. short

  1700. run

  1701. in the

  1702. short

  1703. run

  1704. it only

  1705. felt like

  1706. bitterness

  1707. for her

  1708. but not

  1709. long term.

  1710. Some might

  1711. say it was

  1712. a punish

  1713. for the

  1714. sin of

  1715. going to

  1716. Moab

  1717. and marrying

  1718. foreign

  1719. women.

  1720. Maybe.

  1721. Maybe.

  1722. Not

  1723. necessarily.

  1724. Maybe.

  1725. Psalm 34

    Psalms 34:19

  1726. verse 19

  1727. says the

  1728. righteous

  1729. person may

  1730. have many

  1731. troubles

  1732. but the

  1733. Lord delivers

  1734. him from

  1735. them all.

  1736. That is

  1737. the Bible

  1738. never promises

  1739. that believers

  1740. will escape

  1741. difficulty in

  1742. life as

  1743. well.

  1744. But

  1745. suppose

  1746. Naomi's

  1747. calamity

  1748. was in

  1749. fact owing

  1750. to her

  1751. and her

  1752. husband's

  1753. disobedience.

  1754. What if

  1755. it was?

  1756. That

  1757. makes this

  1758. story

  1759. remarkable.

  1760. It

  1761. makes it

  1762. if you

  1763. like

  1764. doubly

  1765. encouraging

  1766. because it

  1767. shows

  1768. that God

  1769. is willing

  1770. and able

  1771. even to

  1772. turn

  1773. his

  1774. severe

  1775. judgments

  1776. into

  1777. our

  1778. joys.

  1779. Bitterness

  1780. just for a

  1781. moment.

  1782. And what

  1783. this Bible

  1784. is saying,

  1785. what this

  1786. passage is

  1787. saying is

  1788. come back.

  1789. Jesus

  1790. is saying

  1791. to you

  1792. whatever

  1793. you've

  1794. done,

  1795. whatever

  1796. you've

  1797. become,

  1798. come back

  1799. home to

  1800. your God.

  1801. I want to

  1802. pray with

  1803. you right

  1804. now.

  1805. And I'm

  1806. just going to

  1807. pray really

  1808. slowly.

  1809. And maybe the

  1810. prayer that I

  1811. pray, you

  1812. might want to

  1813. echo it in

  1814. your heart and

  1815. come back to

  1816. God now.

  1817. Let's do

  1818. that.

  1819. our

  1820. gracious God,

  1821. I just

  1822. want to

  1823. thank you

  1824. for your

  1825. love and

  1826. your

  1827. compassion.

  1828. I want to

  1829. thank you

  1830. for giving

  1831. us,

  1832. giving me

  1833. life.

  1834. sorry that

  1835. I, that

  1836. we have

  1837. lived it for

  1838. ourselves and

  1839. not for you.

  1840. Thank you

  1841. that Jesus

  1842. dealt with my

  1843. sin at the

  1844. cross, that

  1845. he was turned

  1846. away, that

  1847. he was made

  1848. destitute so

  1849. that we can be

  1850. brought back

  1851. in.

  1852. He was

  1853. emptied so

  1854. that we could

  1855. be filled.

  1856. He took my

  1857. sin so

  1858. that I could

  1859. be forgiven.

  1860. So please

  1861. forgive me

  1862. and accept

  1863. me because

  1864. of him

  1865. and help

  1866. me to start

  1867. living for

  1868. you.

  1869. Amen.
