  1. Good morning, everyone. It's great to be with you in person on this as we kick off our new series in the Book of Acts.

  2. And if you've never met me before, either in person or here on the screen, my name is Steve Jeffers.

  3. I'm the senior pastor here at St. Paul's.

  4. And it's great to be regathering again for those who are able to do that.

  5. So if you've got, as Nick had indicated, if you've got a Bible in front of you, if you've got the St. Paul's app, that would be fantastic.

  6. I've got an outline for today's talk there in front of you, and then you help you to follow along.

  7. So let me pray, and then we're going to launch straight into Acts chapter 1 and set the scene for us for this series.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  8. Gracious God, we thank you for every life and for every life that is tuned in now to your word.

  9. We pray as we look at your word in front of us today, but also in the coming weeks, as we look at the Book of Acts, we ask that you would shape our lives.

  10. Help us to get a big vision of what you are doing in your world.

  11. God, the work that you have been doing for centuries and are continuing to do now in all the confusion and the chaos of our world right now,

  12. that you are still working, transforming and changing lives.

  13. And we pray that you would change our lives.

  14. Align us as individuals, as a church, to your great storyline.

  15. Amen.

  16. So, Lord, we pray that you would mercifully send your spirit and do your work through your word.

  17. Amen.

  18. Edward Lorenz was a physicist working in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the 1960s on the computer modelling of weather systems.

  19. He devised a program which, once you typed in certain data, it could kind of predict what the weather pattern was going to be.

  20. However, one day in his work, he typed in the wrong data.

  21. He made a mistake.

  22. It wasn't a big mistake.

  23. He meant to type in a six-digit number, 0.506127, but instead he only typed in a three-digit number, 0.506.

  24. It's a very small error, really.

  25. I mean, you know, my calculations with the tape measure, I wouldn't even notice it.

  26. It's one in one thousandths of a difference, really.

  27. He didn't think it would make that much of a difference to the outcome,

  28. but he decided to test it anyway, what the difference would be.

  29. This is what he went on to describe.

  30. It's as if a tiny atmospheric disturbance in China,

  31. no greater than the beat of a butterfly's wing,

  32. a week or so later becoming a Force 12 hurricane in New York.

  33. That's how big the difference was.

  34. And his discovery became known as the butterfly effect.

  35. When something very small, something very minute, minor,

  36. grows and grows and grows in its impact.

  37. Now, what could be depressing for us is that on the most part for us as people,

  38. there's no butterfly effect in our lives magnifying the little contribution that we as individuals make to history.

  39. Most of us have to face the fact that we will drop the little pebbles of our lives into the turbulent oceans of world events,

  40. and in no time at all, it will bear no trace of us ever existing.

  41. It doesn't take long.

  42. It's kind of depressing, really.

  43. It's kind of depressing way to start a sermon.

  44. And it's depressing, particularly for two major areas in life or stages in life.

  45. When you are old and you see the end realized, the fact of it ends coming sooner rather than later,

  46. and you realize, well, will I be remembered?

  47. But also for a younger generation that have grown up and heard consistently the words said to them,

  48. you can make a difference.

  49. You can change the world.

  50. You can be who you want to be and change the world.

  51. And there's a whole generation of young people growing up with the assumption that they are world changers

  52. until they leave university and sit at a desk and realize that it doesn't happen so fast as they would imagine.

  53. And so that's for most of us.

  54. There's not a butterfly effect amplifying the contribution that we make in history.

  55. But not so with Jesus Christ.

  56. He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman.

  57. He grew up in still another village.

  58. He worked in a carpenter shop in obscurity until he was about 30 years of age.

  59. Then for three years, he was a traveling preacher.

  60. Never wrote a book.

  61. Never held an office.

  62. Never had a family.

  63. Never owned a house.

  64. He never went to university.

  65. Never traveled more than 300 kilometers from the place where he was born.

  66. He never did the things that we associate with greatness.

  67. And he was only 33 when the tide of public opinion turned against him.

  68. His friends ran away.

  69. He was handed over to his enemies.

  70. He was nailed to a cross, crucified, executed between two thieves

  71. because he was regarded as a criminal himself and he was laid in a borrowed grave.

  72. Wasn't needing it for very long.

  73. 2,000 years later, right across the globe, penetrating all kinds of people, groups and cultures,

  74. this world is still enthralled by him.

  75. All the armies that have ever marched, all the navies that have ever sailed,

  76. all the parliaments that have ever sat, all the kings that have ever reigned,

  77. put them all together and they're not even close to the impact on humanity

  78. as the one solitary life of Jesus Christ.

  79. The ripples of the life, the death, the resurrection, the ascension of Jesus Christ of Nazareth

  80. have increased in amplitude and expanded in diameter right across the globe

  81. in every culture and people group and nation for centuries.

  82. That is what the book of Acts is about.

  83. It's where we see it starting to move on.

  84. And that is what makes Acts so relevant to us today.

  85. The point here is that when you plug your one solitary obscure life into God's mission in Jesus Christ,

  86. you plug yourself into eternal life and hope and value and significance and joy,

  87. increasingly so forever.

  88. That's the point.

  89. So to make that point, I've got four points.

  90. And if you've got your app in front of you, you can open it up and follow along with me.

  91. Four points.

  92. God's mission, power for God's mission, weakness and the advance of God's mission

  93. and fourthly, living for God's mission.

  94. So first of all, God's mission.

  95. And I'll spend more time on this one than on the others.

  96. What is God's mission?

  97. What is his storyline?

  98. What is his view, his worldview, if you like?

  99. And God's worldview, his storyline has four main chapters to it.

  100. First is creation.

  101. In Genesis 1, right at the beginning of the Bible,

  102. the God who stands outside of all of creation, who always existed,

  103. created all things by speaking them into existence, such is the power of his word.

  104. He made the first people, Adam and Eve, in his image.

  105. And all people from Adam and Eve are bearers of the image of God,

  106. which gives us a special dignity.

  107. The great American theologian, Jonathan Edwards, wrote that the only reason that God would have

  108. for creating us, humanity and all that exists,

  109. is not in order for this God, this creator, to get cosmic love and joy and relationship with his creation,

  110. but to impart it to his creation, that we might experience his cosmic love and joy.

  111. And the storyline of the Bible contains the only storyline across every culture throughout all of humanity,

  112. the history of humanity, the only storyline,

  113. where the divine creator of all that exists creates in order to impart love and joy to his creation,

  114. not to extract it.

  115. That's chapter one of God's storyline.

  116. Chapter two is the fall, Genesis three.

  117. The first people decide to reject God's love and rule and do things their way.

  118. And all people have followed suit in living life with no consideration with God whatsoever.

  119. And as a result, all relationships are cosmically fractured.

  120. Our special dignity as image bearers of God means that God holds us rightly so,

  121. especially accountable for our rejection of him, all people.

  122. And in his judgment in the early bits of the Bible in Genesis chapter 11,

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  123. is to scatter people from his presence across the earth,

  124. confusing their languages and their cultures,

  125. so that we as humanity cannot work together in order to collectively oppose God.

  126. That's chapter two.

  127. Chapter three is that God has got a plan to reverse all of that.

  128. God's plan of redemption begins with a promise to Abraham in the very next chapter in Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  129. And the promise is that all the peoples of the earth are going to be blessed through Abraham

  130. and through Abraham brought back to God in relationship with him.

  131. And it's a plan that he's worked out through history.

  132. So I'm fast forwarding a lot here.

  133. Still read the Old Testament, fast forwarding a whole lot here.

  134. This is how Galatians 3 in the New Testament puts it.

  135. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

  136. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise.

  137. Your trust in Jesus Christ means that you inherit all of Abraham's plans and purposes,

  138. or God's plans and purposes to bring everything blessing through Abraham.

  139. Jesus is the one who takes the judgment of God for our sin, for rejecting God,

  140. the punishment that we deserve.

  141. He dies the death that we should have died,

  142. but he rose victorious over sin.

  143. And everyone who puts their faith in the cosmic Lord Jesus is gathered back into relationship with God.

  144. And what Jesus does from that moment is he forms the new people of God,

  145. forms a new community, a new humanity that lives as it's meant to live

  146. under the rule of the cosmic Lord Jesus.

  147. It's called the church.

  148. The former dividing walls of hostility between people have been broken down.

  149. As a result of his work of reconciling people to God and to each other,

  150. Jesus calls his church to take this good news of reconciliation to the ends of the earth

  151. and to make disciples for the cosmic Lord Jesus from every people group and nationality and culture.

  152. And this is what we're seeing the beginning of here in the book of Acts.

  153. We start to see that plan being unfolded in front of us.

  154. Chapter 4 of God's storyline is not the end of the story.

  155. It's the beginning of a chapter that has no ending.

  156. It's a chapter where God reigns forever.

  157. There's no longer any carnage or evil and sin.

  158. Revelation chapter 5, we get a glimpse of how God brings history to its ultimate goal.

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  159. It was God's design in the death of Jesus Christ to ransom from every kind of race and language and people and nation

  160. to make a people for himself.

  161. And these people would have one king.

  162. That is that they would live with Jesus as their supreme treasure and Lord.

  163. Jesus is the one who unites all people.

  164. God's big plan for all of time and eternity and space is for people to come under the authority of Jesus

  165. and turn to him in faith and repentance and enjoy his cosmic love.

  166. Forever, increasingly so.

  167. And the book of Acts is saying, conform your life to that storyline.

  168. Live for that storyline.

  169. Be involved in the work that God is doing in this world.

  170. The only work that will last forever.

  171. So as we open up the beginning of Acts, we're in chapter 3 of God's storyline.

  172. Chapter 4 is yet to come.

  173. We're still in chapter 3 ever since Jesus was here and until he comes back again.

  174. And did you notice there, as Nick read it out to us, in chapter 1, verse 1, it says,

  175. In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach.

  176. The word began there is the key word in understanding the relevance of this book for us right now, today.

  177. What Luke stresses here is that what Jesus did on earth 2,000 years ago was the beginning of his doing and his teaching.

  178. And the clear implication is that now, now that Jesus has ascended, as we are told here in Acts 1,

  179. and sits at the right hand of the Father, ruling all that is, he's not done.

  180. His work is not finished.

  181. He's not dead.

  182. He's not absent.

  183. He's alive in his presence.

  184. Jesus is continuing to build his church by drawing people into his cosmic love and joy as his family.

  185. Wherever people come under the authority of his name and receive his forgiveness of sins,

  186. trust in his power, they get their obscure lives plugged into his eternal spirit.

  187. He's not a story line.

  188. You see, the fact that Jesus is alive, the fact that he's ascended and he's seated and ruling all things,

  189. gives purpose to our solitary lives.

  190. He is the one changing the world one life at a time forever and he includes us in that.

  191. He invites us to be part of it.

  192. So I think that Luke's desire here is for the unfolding message of Acts to have a transforming impact on our lives.

  193. He wants us to be part of what God is doing in the universe now as what he's always been doing in the universe.

  194. You see, Acts is a two-part book, if you like.

  195. It's part of a two-part book.

  196. It's a second part of a two-volume work.

  197. It's part of a two-part book, written by Luke, a first-century doctor.

  198. The Gospel of Luke and this book of Acts go together as one work, one piece of literature,

  199. and they are both addressed to a man named Theophilus.

  200. Theophilus is most likely a Roman aristocrat because Luke addresses him as your excellency at the beginning of his gospel.

  201. And so Luke could well be writing both Luke and Acts to inform an educated Gentile

  202. of the extraordinary spread of the Christian faith across the Roman Empire

  203. and to convince this man of its extraordinary truth

  204. so that this man is drawn into it

  205. and despite his aristocracy and the important part he might play in the Roman Empire

  206. to show him there is something greater for his life to be included in,

  207. something much more significant for him to give himself to.

  208. something much more important.

  209. See, Luke goes to enormous lengths in his gospel

  210. to show us that Jesus Christ rose from the dead in bodily form.

  211. Not just an idea, not just a concept, but physically rose from the dead.

  212. It says in Acts 1 verse 3,

    Acts 1:3

  213. after his suffering, that is his trial and his death,

  214. he showed himself to these men, his disciples,

  215. and gave many convincing proves,

  216. many convincing proves that he is alive.

  217. He appeared to them over a period of 40 days

  218. and spoke about the kingdom of God.

  219. You see, we are called here in the book of Acts to be witnesses to the gospel,

  220. the glorious gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  221. and you cannot be an authentic instrument in the hands of the living and the reigning Jesus Christ

  222. if you don't think he's alive.

  223. If you just think he's a great idea,

  224. you cannot be an effective witness.

  225. You must know that he is alive and he is reigning right now over everything,

  226. even the things we don't understand.

  227. Reigning as Lord of the universe of all time and space is in his hands.

  228. I mean, you need to be profoundly persuaded

  229. that Jesus has broken the power of death

  230. and that he is alive and alive with indestructible life.

  231. He will never die again.

  232. He hasn't been resuscitated.

  233. He's been resurrected.

  234. Never to be defeated.

  235. And his kingdom is unstoppable.

  236. His storyline will advance.

  237. You need to be profoundly, profoundly convicted of that.

  238. It's so important to constantly come back again and again and again

  239. to the death and resurrection of Jesus,

  240. to God's mission in this world

  241. so that our lives are constantly realigned with him and his work.

  242. Because we get so easily distracted by our own storylines

  243. and our own missions and agendas.

  244. The disciples are no different.

  245. The apostles are confused.

  246. Verse 6.

  247. Verse 6.

  248. Their vision is so small.

  249. Lord,

  250. are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?

  251. Like, that's it.

  252. They're thinking of their homes and their villages and stuff.

  253. And Jesus' mission is global.

  254. You see, they, you know,

  255. don't entirely blame these guys, right?

  256. I mean, they're as narrow-minded as we are.

  257. They knew that the Old Testament promise

  258. of the outpouring of God's spirit

  259. was a promise for the last days

  260. when God would establish his kingdom on earth

  261. and restore his people.

  262. And so their question is,

  263. Jesus, is this it now?

  264. You know, is that time come?

  265. Will Jesus bring down the final curtain of history,

  266. beat up the Roman Empire,

  267. re-establish the kingdom as it used to be,

  268. take Israel to its glory days

  269. and reign over all creation

  270. with Israel at the top of the pile?

  271. And Jesus corrects their thinking in verse 7

  272. and then instructs them to basically,

  273. guys, lift your eyes.

  274. Lift your eyes to a much bigger storyline,

  275. a much bigger plan.

  276. He's saying your primary concern

  277. is not the restoration of national Israel,

  278. but your primary concern

  279. is to receive the Holy Spirit,

  280. God dwelling in you,

  281. that you might fulfill the task

  282. that I have given you,

  283. my plan for all things.

  284. Have a look at verse 8.

  285. But you receive power

  286. when the Holy Spirit comes on you

  287. and you will be my witnesses.

  288. This is the reason why you get the Holy Spirit.

  289. You will be my witnesses

  290. in Jerusalem,

  291. Judea and Samaria,

  292. the earth.

  293. Isaiah 49 verse 6,

    Isaiah 49:6

  294. God promised that salvation would be

  295. proclaimed to the ends of the earth

  296. and Jesus confirms

  297. that this promise here

  298. with these disciples.

  299. That's the promise.

  300. Salvation must be proclaimed

  301. to the ends of the earth

  302. and these are his last words

  303. to his disciples.

  304. Jesus' last words to his disciples

  305. are to be their primary concern,

  306. their first concern.

  307. There is more work to be done

  308. in God's mission

  309. before chapter 4 comes

  310. and chapter 4 has not arrived yet.

  311. That's what he's saying

  312. to his disciples.

  313. First for the apostles,

  314. then for all who are called

  315. to faith in Jesus Christ

  316. through their witness

  317. are tasked with advancing

  318. God's mission to the ends of the earth

  319. as our primary first concern.

  320. It's a huge task.

  321. And the encouraging thing is

  322. what we see here

  323. from verse 8

  324. is that we have power

  325. for God's mission

  326. to accomplish his task.

  327. See, this is not merely human work.

  328. It is spirit-empowered witness.

  329. Jesus is calling them

  330. to a supernatural activity.

  331. They will no longer be mere advocates,

  332. not just mere advocates

  333. who can prove,

  334. like a good lawyer,

  335. argue really well

  336. that Jesus is risen from the dead.

  337. Under the influence

  338. of the Holy Spirit,

  339. they will speak

  340. with an unwavering assurance

  341. of one who has tasted

  342. and knows in their heart

  343. the reality so immediately

  344. that all doubt

  345. about the resurrection of Jesus

  346. is gone.

  347. Under the power

  348. of the Spirit of God,

  349. you move from being

  350. an advocate of Christianity

  351. to being a witness

  352. of the living Christ

  353. in your own life.

  354. You move from simply deducing

  355. Christian truths

  356. from valid premises

  357. to proclaiming them

  358. as boldly

  359. as someone

  360. who's experienced

  361. the realities

  362. in their own life.

  363. This is the power

  364. and the witness

  365. that will take Christ

  366. to the ends of the earth.

  367. Not just mere facts,

  368. but facts,

  369. truths lived out

  370. and shaping our lives.

  371. And so the church

  372. is not merely

  373. a human institution.

  374. In all that the church does,

  375. it is to do it

  376. in the power

  377. of the Holy Spirit.

  378. And the promise here

  379. of the Spirit

  380. in verse 8

  381. is valid

  382. until the Great Commission

  383. is complete

  384. and the witness of Christ

  385. is planted

  386. around the world.

  387. In other words,

  388. it is a promise

  389. until chapter 4 comes.

  390. We are told in verse 9

  391. that after Jesus

  392. said these things,

  393. he was taken up

  394. before their very eyes

  395. and a cloud

  396. hid them from their sight,

  397. hid him from their sight.

  398. At the end of his

  399. earthly ministry,

  400. Jesus is restored

  401. to his rightful place.

  402. And his rightful place

  403. is the seated ruler

  404. of all time

  405. and eternity.

  406. The one who has

  407. the power of all things,

  408. control of all things

  409. in his hand.

  410. He now rules,

  411. occupying the highest place

  412. as Lord of all,

  413. and from there

  414. he exercises

  415. his universal reign

  416. that goes forever

  417. and ever

  418. and guarantees

  419. the success

  420. of his mission.

  421. It will not fail.

  422. His storyline

  423. cannot be altered.

  424. It will not fail.

  425. It's really important

  426. that we grapple with that

  427. because what you see

  428. in the rest of Acts

  429. from verse 10 onwards

  430. is

  431. weakness.

  432. Weakness

  433. at the very beginning

  434. of God's mission.

  435. Having been commissioned

  436. to go

  437. to the ends

  438. of the earth,

  439. we see

  440. in verse 10

  441. a rebuke.

  442. Men of Galilee,

  443. why do you stand here

  444. looking into the sky?

  445. Like you

  446. bunch of

  447. stargazers,

  448. you've been given

  449. a mission

  450. and you

  451. stand,

  452. you've been told

  453. the Spirit will come,

  454. get on down to Jerusalem.

  455. Why are you

  456. standing here?

  457. Get on

  458. with the mission.

  459. It seems

  460. like this is

  461. fundamentally

  462. inconsistent.

  463. And so

  464. one has to ask,

  465. why

  466. does Luke

  467. include

  468. the second half

  469. of chapter 1

  470. of Acts?

  471. You know,

  472. he's on this

  473. role

  474. of,

  475. you know,

  476. Jesus ascended

  477. on high,

  478. going to get

  479. the Holy Spirit,

  480. going to take

  481. this message

  482. to the end

  483. of the earth.

  484. I mean,

  485. it's like

  486. gusto,

  487. you know,

  488. like,

  489. whoa,

  490. we've got

  491. purpose in our lives.

  492. Why doesn't he

  493. just jump

  494. straight from there

  495. to Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  496. and the day

  497. of Pentecost

  498. and thousands

  499. of people

  500. coming to Christ?

  501. You know,

  502. there's a logical

  503. connection

  504. between those

  505. two things.

  506. Instead,

  507. what we have

  508. is the details

  509. around Judas'

  510. betrayal,

  511. Matthias'

  512. selection,

  513. why include

  514. the lying,

  515. the mistrust,

  516. the betrayal,

  517. the death?

  518. It's not like,

  519. you know,

  520. he's a great

  521. story writer here

  522. and he's wanting

  523. to build up

  524. Matthias and

  525. let's,

  526. you know,

  527. this guy's going

  528. to play a key

  529. role,

  530. you know,

  531. in chapter 15

  532. of Acts,

  533. so we need to

  534. introduce his

  535. character now.

  536. So let's get

  537. Matthias in on

  538. the scene now

  539. rather than

  540. drop him in

  541. from,

  542. Matthias doesn't

  543. even get

  544. mentioned again

  545. in the rest

  546. of Acts.

  547. So why

  548. this diversion?

  549. Now on one

  550. important level,

  551. we could say

  552. that the

  553. appointment of

  554. Matthias

  555. shows us

  556. that the

  557. pursuit of

  558. the Spirit's

  559. power

  560. is not

  561. disconnected

  562. from the

  563. pursuit

  564. towards the

  565. teaching and

  566. the work of

  567. the historical

  568. Jesus.

  569. Let me just

  570. simplify that.

  571. It was

  572. absolutely

  573. important

  574. that the

  575. replacement

  576. for Judas

  577. was himself

  578. an eyewitness

  579. to the life,

  580. the teaching

  581. and the deeds

  582. of Jesus

  583. Christ.

  584. The resurrected

  585. Jesus,

  586. absolutely

  587. essential

  588. that he

  589. himself

  590. was an

  591. eyewitness

  592. to the

  593. resurrection

  594. of Jesus.

  595. It is

  596. very clear

  597. here that

  598. the Holy

  599. Spirit has

  600. an unwavering

  601. zeal for

  602. the glory

  603. of the

  604. crucified,

  605. risen and

  606. ascended

  607. Jesus Christ.

  608. They're not

  609. disconnected.

  610. There's not

  611. Bible-believing,

  612. gospel-centered

  613. Jesus people

  614. Christians and

  615. the Holy Spirit-filled

  616. Jesus Christian

  617. people.

  618. They're not

  619. separated.

  620. God's

  621. God's

  622. God's

  623. God's

  624. God's

  625. God's

  626. God's

  627. God's

  628. God's

  629. approach.

  630. He does

  631. not

  632. idolize

  633. it at

  634. all as

  635. it

  636. pursues

  637. God's

  638. mission in

  639. the world.

  640. Luke

  641. reveals a

  642. church of

  643. weakness,

  644. of frailty

  645. and failure,

  646. even though it

  647. has this

  648. astonishing

  649. power in

  650. the Holy

  651. Spirit,

  652. even as

  653. they

  654. supernaturally

  655. empowered to

  656. pursue God's

  657. mission in

  658. the world of

  659. redemption across

  660. the globe,

  661. through cultures

  662. to every people

  663. group,

  664. we are still

  665. weak.

  666. The power is

  667. not us.

  668. He records the

  669. apostasy of

  670. Judas, the

  671. casting of lots

  672. for his

  673. replacement,

  674. effectively the

  675. gambling to

  676. see who's

  677. going to come

  678. out the top

  679. dog, the

  680. hypocrisy of

  681. Ananias and

  682. Sapphira in

  683. chapter 5,

  684. the bickering

  685. widows in

  686. chapter 6,

  687. Peter's

  688. reluctance to

  689. heed Christ's

  690. call in

  691. chapter 10,

  692. and even

  693. Paul's dispute

  694. with John

  695. Mark in

  696. chapter 15.

  697. Luke is

  698. at least

  699. making the

  700. point that

  701. even though

  702. we have

  703. this astonishing

  704. power of the

  705. Holy Spirit,

  706. we need to

  707. acknowledge our

  708. sin, our

  709. failure, our

  710. frailty.

  711. We need to

  712. deal with the

  713. sins and the

  714. failures and

  715. recognise our

  716. frailty and

  717. recognise our

  718. total, total

  719. dependence upon

  720. the Holy Spirit

  721. for the task at

  722. hand.

  723. And so the

  724. pattern of the

  725. church is

  726. weakness and

  727. dependence,

  728. prayerful dependence

  729. upon God.

  730. That's why I love

  731. verse 14.

  732. They all join

  733. together

  734. constantly in

  735. prayer.

  736. Constantly in

  737. prayer.

  738. That's why I

  739. love the fact

  740. that we're

  741. pushing the

  742. one plus one

  743. plus one,

  744. that the work

  745. of God to

  746. supernaturally

  747. change someone's

  748. storyline so

  749. that they embrace

  750. Jesus and get

  751. included in God's

  752. eternal work is

  753. a work of God in

  754. the heart,

  755. nothing less than

  756. that, nothing

  757. less.

  758. And Acts is

  759. written to us

  760. to give us

  761. certainty that

  762. God's plans for

  763. his church are

  764. always fulfilled

  765. because of his

  766. great power,

  767. despite our

  768. frailty and

  769. our failure.

  770. And so do you

  771. have confidence?

  772. Do you have

  773. confidence in

  774. this as we move

  775. together from this

  776. point as a church,

  777. as we look in

  778. this season of

  779. COVID-19 and

  780. our frailty and

  781. our weakness is

  782. evident amongst

  783. us, as we look

  784. beyond 2020 for

  785. the next stage of

  786. vision for us as a

  787. church here at

  788. St. Paul's,

  789. where is your

  790. confidence?

  791. Is it in strategic

  792. planning?

  793. Is it in, I

  794. don't know what it

  795. is in, your

  796. ability to

  797. communicate truth

  798. or is it in

  799. God's spirit to

  800. bring transformation

  801. in people's lives?

  802. And will that

  803. confidence lead

  804. you to vitally,

  805. vitally,

  806. radically align

  807. yourself with

  808. God's work in

  809. the world?

  810. It's an important

  811. question.

  812. Is your life

  813. living for God's

  814. storyline, his

  815. mission in the

  816. world?

  817. Or is it

  818. something that you

  819. hold out to one

  820. side, you dip in

  821. and out of?

  822. You see, what

  823. we're going to

  824. realize is,

  825. there's another

  826. story that has

  827. arisen in the

  828. last 100 years,

  829. another storyline,

  830. another grand

  831. narrative, another

  832. vision, worldview,

  833. if you like.

  834. It's become the

  835. purpose of life for

  836. most people in the

  837. Western world,

  838. particularly in the

  839. last 60 to 70

  840. years.

  841. It has captivated

  842. the Western world.

  843. The technical term

  844. for this particular

  845. storyline is

  846. philosophical

  847. naturalism.

  848. It's the fancy

  849. way of describing

  850. materialism as a

  851. worldview.

  852. And it's worth

  853. comparing this

  854. worldview, which

  855. dominates the

  856. West, it

  857. dominates the

  858. culture here at

  859. Chatswood, to

  860. God's storyline.

  861. Philosophical

  862. naturalism,

  863. materialism, is a

  864. three-chapter

  865. story.

  866. First, the big

  867. bang.

  868. Secondly,

  869. evolution.

  870. thirdly, the

  871. end.

  872. In the big bang,

  873. there's no

  874. supernatural or

  875. spiritual power that

  876. rules the physical

  877. universe.

  878. It says that

  879. everything that can

  880. be measured,

  881. which is the only

  882. thing worthy,

  883. by the way,

  884. it's the only valid

  885. things, the things

  886. that can be

  887. measured,

  888. is a result of

  889. an explosion that

  890. appeared out of

  891. nothing billions of

  892. years ago.

  893. Freak

  894. accident.

  895. chapter 2 of

  896. the storyline is

  897. that on the back

  898. of that freak

  899. accident, against

  900. all odds, humanity

  901. has evolved from

  902. prehistoric soup

  903. to become,

  904. today, the

  905. dominant species

  906. on the earth.

  907. Today.

  908. One day, maybe

  909. overtaken by

  910. something else.

  911. And despite what

  912. people might feel

  913. inside them,

  914. there is no

  915. such thing as

  916. absolute truth

  917. no such thing

  918. as absolute

  919. right, no such

  920. thing as absolute

  921. wrong.

  922. Because everything

  923. is an accident

  924. and random,

  925. then life,

  926. therefore, has

  927. no absolute

  928. purpose,

  929. and so,

  930. therefore, every

  931. individual is

  932. free to make

  933. of it as they

  934. see fit.

  935. and the goal

  936. of life in

  937. philosophical

  938. naturalism is

  939. therefore to

  940. consume as

  941. much as

  942. possible of

  943. the material

  944. world for

  945. your own

  946. experiences.

  947. Whatever it is

  948. that makes

  949. this moment in

  950. your storyline

  951. as happy and

  952. as agreeable as

  953. it possibly can.

  954. that's

  955. philosophical

  956. naturalism.

  957. And you

  958. need to

  959. pursue your

  960. personal

  961. happiness

  962. because

  963. chapter 3

  964. is coming

  965. at any

  966. time.

  967. And chapter

  968. 3 is

  969. the end.

  970. Humanity

  971. will become

  972. extinct.

  973. There's no

  974. form of

  975. afterlife.

  976. This life

  977. is it.

  978. that's it.

  979. Now, where

  980. materialism says

  981. everything is

  982. random and

  983. therefore, there's

  984. no good, there's

  985. no evil, nothing

  986. to ever hope

  987. for, the

  988. biblical story

  989. says that we

  990. have a loving

  991. creator, a

  992. loving creator

  993. who has triumphed

  994. over evil at

  995. great cost to

  996. himself in

  997. order to love

  998. his creatures

  999. dearly.

  1000. And as we

  1001. look forward to

  1002. a day where

  1003. when everything

  1004. wrong will be

  1005. made right

  1006. and we

  1007. will live

  1008. with him

  1009. in blissful

  1010. joy for

  1011. all of

  1012. eternity,

  1013. increasing

  1014. joy for

  1015. all of

  1016. eternity as

  1017. he embraces

  1018. us with

  1019. his cosmic

  1020. love and

  1021. joy.

  1022. He imparts

  1023. it to us

  1024. forever.

  1025. forever.

  1026. There's a

  1027. difference between

  1028. two storylines.

  1029. Know this,

  1030. whatever

  1031. storyline you

  1032. hold to,

  1033. philosophical

  1034. naturalism, the

  1035. Bible storyline

  1036. with Jesus as

  1037. centre or any

  1038. other storyline

  1039. that you

  1040. particularly want

  1041. to grasp hold

  1042. of, every

  1043. single storyline

  1044. requires you to

  1045. surrender for

  1046. it.

  1047. Every single

  1048. storyline requires

  1049. your time, your

  1050. talents, your

  1051. treasures.

  1052. It requires

  1053. everything from

  1054. you, your

  1055. storyline.

  1056. And what we

  1057. proclaim here as

  1058. a church again

  1059. and again and

  1060. again and again

  1061. and again and

  1062. again and we

  1063. will do so right

  1064. through the book

  1065. of Acts, the

  1066. biblical storyline

  1067. is compelling.

  1068. It is

  1069. convincing.

  1070. Not just

  1071. convincingly

  1072. truth-wise but

  1073. it's also

  1074. compelling from

  1075. the heart.

  1076. It draws you

  1077. in to God's

  1078. cosmic love and

  1079. joy.

  1080. It's also

  1081. more true and

  1082. reasonable than

  1083. all the grand

  1084. storylines of

  1085. this world.

  1086. And so right

  1087. now and

  1088. throughout the

  1089. book of Acts

  1090. as we go

  1091. through in the

  1092. coming weeks,

  1093. like Theophilus,

  1094. I invite you,

  1095. as Luke did

  1096. to Theophilus,

  1097. I invite you

  1098. to jump on

  1099. board with

  1100. God's work in

  1101. this world, in

  1102. the Lord Jesus.

  1103. Start investigating

  1104. the claims and

  1105. align your life

  1106. with Jesus and

  1107. his grand plan

  1108. for all of

  1109. humanity.

  1110. Amen.
