  1. Oh no, what have I done?

  2. In the classic 2002 movie, Spider-Man,

  3. the young Spider-Man has a chance to stop a thief,

  4. but instead chooses to let him go.

  5. He lets him get away only for that thief to end up killing his uncle.

  6. I'm sorry if I've spoiled the movie for you, but the movie's 18 years old, it's okay.

  7. Spider-Man has this moment when he realizes,

  8. oh no, what have I done?

  9. And for the rest of his life, it is shaped by his guilt,

  10. trying to make up for this mistake that cost his uncle's life,

  11. trying to deal with his sin, trying to find redemption.

  12. His whole superhero future is because he is trying to pay the cost of his past sins.

  13. Have you felt that before?

  14. Not the being bitten by a radioactive spider part,

  15. but that gut-wrenching feeling of realizing that you are at fault.

  16. You've let a friend down.

  17. You've been responsible for hurting a person close to you.

  18. And then thinking, how do I fix this?

  19. How do I make amends for my mistake?

  20. Like, you know, I've let my kids down, so I'm going to take them some sliced fruit.

  21. I'm going to, oh, let's go to Macca's kids.

  22. I'm going to buy her flowers.

  23. I'm going to buy her jewelry.

  24. So when I go and say, sorry, I've got something to give her,

  25. so that she'll actually forgive me.

  26. When it comes to our relationship with God,

  27. what happens when we realize what we have done to God?

  28. That we are responsible for the death of his son,

  29. for the murder of God himself.

  30. Is it just enough for us to say sorry?

  31. The great reformer, Martin Luther,

  32. was famously so worried about his guilt and his death

  33. that he became a monk.

  34. Is this what we should do?

  35. We should all, you know, just enter ministry

  36. so we can somehow pay for our sins.

  37. Today we are continuing in our series on the book of Acts,

  38. seeing what living in the new world looks like.

  39. And today we see what apology is.

  40. We see a new repentance.

  41. The people in Jerusalem realize what they have done to Jesus

  42. and they are cut to the heart.

  43. And we see what it means to repent,

  44. to say sorry and to be forgiven.

  45. Today we'll see what to do when we have that,

  46. oh no, what have I done moment.

  47. And we'll be reminded what it means to repent

  48. and how wonderful it is to have a God

  49. who deals with our sin once and for all.

  50. We're going to be three points this morning.

  51. The first is seeing the requirements for repentance.

  52. So the disciples have done what Jesus told them to do

  53. in Acts chapter one.

  54. They were told to wait in Jerusalem until Pentecost.

  55. And they've done that.

  56. Pentecost means 50.

  57. And so Pentecost is 50 days after Passover,

  58. a famous Jewish festival, Passover,

  59. when they remembered what God did passing over their sins.

  60. 50 days after that is 7 times 7 plus 1,

  61. which is where they get 50, the Pentecost from.

  62. And so we see what happens on this day.

  63. Acts chapter 2, verse 2.

    Acts 2:2

  64. Suddenly, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind

  65. came from heaven and filled the whole house

  66. where they were sitting.

  67. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated

  68. and came to rest on each of them.

  69. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit

  70. and began to speak in other tongues

  71. as the Spirit enabled them.

  72. This is a massive, dramatic moment

  73. in the history of the church.

  74. This was not just a simple breeze

  75. that blew through the house,

  76. but it is a violent wind.

  77. In the Old Testament,

  78. the word for the Spirit and wind

  79. are the same word.

  80. It's ruach.

  81. It's the same word.

  82. And so we see in the Old Testament

  83. that God made Adam come to life

  84. by breathing into him.

  85. And this rushing wind

  86. is God's life-giving Spirit

  87. coming to the apostles.

  88. We see tongues of fire

  89. coming to rest on these men.

  90. And again, fire is a common image of God.

  91. You only have to think back to, you know,

  92. Moses and the burning bush.

  93. And so the Holy Spirit

  94. comes upon these men

  95. so that they could be

  96. about God's mission.

  97. Last week with Steve,

  98. in chapter 1,

  99. we saw that Jesus was sending

  100. his disciples,

  101. his apostles,

  102. out into the world.

  103. To Jerusalem,

  104. Judea,

  105. Samaria,

  106. and to the ends of the earth.

  107. But he wasn't going to send them out

  108. unprepared or unequipped.

  109. They would have the Holy Spirit.

  110. They were a witness

  111. to what they had seen

  112. about Jesus,

  113. equipped to share the good news

  114. to the ends of the earth.

  115. And the Holy Spirit fills them here

  116. so that they begin

  117. to speak in other languages.

  118. And I love this part of the Bible.

  119. If you've heard me speak

  120. about this kind of thing before,

  121. I've prayed for this

  122. because I really want to be able

  123. to speak Mandarin Chinese.

  124. And learning it takes time.

  125. And I really wish

  126. that had happened to me.

  127. But here it happens.

  128. God miraculously gifts these people

  129. so that they can speak

  130. other languages.

  131. And they're speaking

  132. about God's mighty deeds.

  133. And they're making such a commotion

  134. about God in other languages

  135. that people around them

  136. hear and gather.

  137. Verse 5.

  138. Now, they were staying in Jerusalem

  139. God-fearing Jews

  140. from every nation under heaven.

  141. When they heard this sound,

  142. a crowd came together

  143. in bewilderment

  144. because each one heard

  145. their own language being spoken.

  146. Utterly amazed,

  147. they asked,

  148. aren't all these

  149. who are speaking Galileans?

  150. Luke, the author,

  151. is making a real point

  152. in verse 5

  153. explaining that there were

  154. God-fearing Jews

  155. from every nation

  156. under heaven

  157. in Jerusalem.

  158. They were there

  159. because of the religious festivals,

  160. Passover,

  161. and then Pentecost.

  162. And the story

  163. of the Old Testament

  164. from the Tower of Babel

  165. all of the way through

  166. to their exile

  167. had been a history

  168. of disobedience.

  169. They disobeyed God

  170. over and over.

  171. And he scattered them

  172. at the Tower of Babel.

  173. He sent them into exile

  174. in their history.

  175. Those who should have been

  176. living in the promised land

  177. had been spread

  178. across the known world.

  179. They've grown up

  180. in foreign countries

  181. speaking languages

  182. not their own,

  183. but they are all gathered

  184. for Pentecost

  185. and for Passover.

  186. And God uses

  187. his disciples

  188. to speak to his

  189. scattered people

  190. who have gathered

  191. for this moment.

  192. The Holy Spirit

  193. brings unity

  194. where there was division.

  195. The list of people

  196. that had gathered

  197. was impressive.

  198. Verse 9.

  199. Parthians, Medes,

  200. Elamites,

  201. residents of Mesopotamia,

  202. Judea, Cappadocia,

  203. Pontus, Asia,

  204. Phrygia, Pamphylia,

  205. Egypt,

  206. parts of Libya

  207. near Cyrene,

  208. visitors from Rome,

  209. both Jews and converts,

  210. Cretans and Arabs.

  211. We hear them

  212. declaring the wonders

  213. of God

  214. in our own language.

  215. Have you ever had

  216. that feeling

  217. when you're on

  218. holidays overseas

  219. if you can remember

  220. being what overseas

  221. is like?

  222. And you have this moment

  223. in a non-English

  224. speaking country

  225. if that's your

  226. first language

  227. where you don't

  228. understand

  229. what everyone's

  230. saying around you.

  231. It feels very foreign

  232. because it is.

  233. And then off in the distance

  234. you hear someone

  235. speaking your language.

  236. You hear, you know,

  237. someone speaking English

  238. if you're in a non-English

  239. speaking country

  240. and it's just like,

  241. oh,

  242. they will understand me.

  243. They know

  244. what it is like.

  245. And there's just

  246. a feeling of home

  247. and resonance.

  248. I can imagine

  249. that for these people.

  250. These Jews

  251. whose first language

  252. is not

  253. the local language.

  254. But now

  255. they are hearing

  256. the good news

  257. of God

  258. in their

  259. own language.

  260. Some

  261. just think

  262. that they were drunk.

  263. But Peter

  264. gets up

  265. and he speaks.

  266. Peter,

  267. who had been

  268. very fearful,

  269. who had

  270. run

  271. at the first

  272. side of opposition,

  273. the Holy Spirit

  274. not only

  275. has enabled

  276. him to speak

  277. in other languages,

  278. the Holy Spirit

  279. fills Peter

  280. and is changing him

  281. from being

  282. someone who

  283. was fearful

  284. and stuttering

  285. to now

  286. someone who

  287. is able to

  288. get up in front

  289. of a crowd

  290. and preach.

  291. And he explains

  292. what is going on.

  293. They're not drunk,

  294. it's nine o'clock

  295. in the morning,

  296. but this

  297. is what

  298. was prophesied

  299. long ago.

  300. What is happening

  301. right now

  302. we have been

  303. waiting for

  304. for years

  305. and years.

  306. And he takes

  307. them

  308. step by step

  309. to see

  310. who Jesus is.

  311. And he quotes

  312. from the prophet

  313. Joel

  314. and from King

  315. David.

  316. From Joel,

  317. in the last days

  318. God says,

  319. I will pour

  320. my spirit out

  321. on all

  322. people.

  323. God

  324. giving the

  325. Holy Spirit

  326. to all

  327. people.

  328. Again,

  329. this is an

  330. amazing

  331. dramatic

  332. shift

  333. from the

  334. Old Testament

  335. because

  336. previously

  337. God's

  338. Holy Spirit

  339. would come

  340. upon kings

  341. and prophets

  342. and a select

  343. few.

  344. But now

  345. the Spirit

  346. is given

  347. to young,

  348. to old,

  349. to male,

  350. to female.

  351. Peter is

  352. showing them

  353. in this

  354. first step

  355. that Joel

  356. promised that

  357. God would

  358. pour out

  359. the Spirit.

  360. And that is

  361. exactly what's

  362. happening.

  363. Not only that,

  364. King David

  365. said that they

  366. should expect

  367. someone better

  368. than King

  369. David himself,

  370. someone who

  371. would not be

  372. abandoned to

  373. the realm

  374. of the dead,

  375. whose body

  376. would not

  377. see decay.

  378. And that's

  379. not David.

  380. Verse 29,

  381. fellow Israelites,

  382. I can confidently

  383. tell you that

  384. the patriarch

  385. David died

  386. and he was

  387. buried and

  388. his tomb

  389. is here to

  390. this day.

  391. Seeing what

  392. was to come,

  393. he spoke of

  394. the resurrection

  395. of the Messiah,

  396. that he was

  397. not abandoned

  398. to the realm

  399. of the dead,

  400. nor did his

  401. body see

  402. decay.

  403. God has

  404. raised this

  405. Jesus to

  406. life and

  407. we are all

  408. witnesses of

  409. it.

  410. Joel prophesied

  411. that the Spirit

  412. would come on

  413. all people and

  414. you are seeing

  415. it.

  416. David knew

  417. that the Lord

  418. and Messiah

  419. would die

  420. but not see

  421. decay and

  422. we have seen

  423. it, the

  424. apostles have

  425. seen it.

  426. And then

  427. Peter gets

  428. to the point,

  429. verse 36,

  430. therefore,

  431. let all

  432. Israel be

  433. assured of

  434. this,

  435. God has

  436. made this

  437. Jesus whom

  438. you crucified,

  439. both Lord

  440. and Messiah,

  441. the one

  442. you crucified.

  443. He is the

  444. Lord and

  445. he is the

  446. Messiah.

  447. And the

  448. crowd have

  449. that,

  450. oh no,

  451. what have

  452. we done

  453. moment.

  454. that painful,

  455. gut-wrenching,

  456. heart-cutting

  457. moment when

  458. they realised

  459. that they

  460. killed God.

  461. Verse 37,

  462. when the

  463. people heard

  464. this,

  465. they were

  466. cut to the

  467. heart and

  468. said to

  469. Peter and

  470. the other

  471. apostles,

  472. brothers,

  473. what should

  474. we do?

  475. That phrase

  476. is so

  477. painful,

  478. cut to the

  479. heart,

  480. what do

  481. we do?

  482. We killed

  483. him.

  484. The one

  485. that we

  486. have been

  487. waiting for,

  488. God's

  489. chosen one,

  490. the Lord

  491. who would

  492. save us

  493. and we

  494. killed him.

  495. What do

  496. we do?

  497. I can

  498. imagine

  499. their minds

  500. spinning with

  501. options of

  502. what they

  503. could do.

  504. Maybe it's

  505. just the

  506. Aussie male

  507. dad in

  508. me.

  509. I can

  510. fix it.

  511. I see

  512. one of my

  513. kids with

  514. a toy that's

  515. not a little

  516. bit broken,

  517. pass it to

  518. me, I'll

  519. fix it.

  520. Gaffer tape,

  521. hot glue,

  522. whatever it

  523. takes, I

  524. will fix it.

  525. I can

  526. imagine that

  527. feeling in

  528. the crowd.

  529. Surely

  530. there's

  531. something we

  532. can do.

  533. God sent

  534. him back,

  535. we'll love

  536. him this

  537. time.

  538. We'll

  539. take care of

  540. him, we

  541. promise.

  542. We'll

  543. give more

  544. money to

  545. the synagogue,

  546. we'll give

  547. more sacrifices.

  548. We've

  549. stuffed up,

  550. but surely

  551. we can earn

  552. your forgiveness.

  553. 38,

  554. verse 38,

  555. Peter replied,

  556. repent and

  557. be baptized,

  558. every one

  559. of you,

  560. in the name

  561. of Jesus

  562. Christ for

  563. the forgiveness

  564. of your

  565. sins, and

  566. you will

  567. receive the

  568. gift of

  569. the Holy

  570. Spirit.

  571. Repent,

  572. turn away

  573. from your

  574. sin, be

  575. baptized, be

  576. washed clean

  577. in the name

  578. of Jesus

  579. Christ, because

  580. this Jesus,

  581. he is still

  582. working now.

  583. Your sins

  584. will be

  585. forgiven, they

  586. will be

  587. wiped out,

  588. and you

  589. will receive

  590. the Holy

  591. Spirit.

  592. No longer

  593. is God

  594. going to

  595. dwell in

  596. the temple,

  597. but in

  598. his people,

  599. they will

  600. be the

  601. temple.

  602. You can

  603. have a

  604. gift.

  605. And that

  606. day, about

  607. 3,000 people

  608. were added to

  609. their number.

  610. This group

  611. started out

  612. divided by

  613. language and

  614. city of

  615. origin, but

  616. after they

  617. had repented

  618. and become

  619. part of God's

  620. family, they

  621. were all united

  622. together.

  623. Verse 44,

  624. all the

  625. believers were

  626. together and

  627. had everything

  628. in common.

  629. And twice it

  630. mentions that

  631. they were

  632. breaking bread

  633. together.

  634. God's Spirit

  635. has come, the

  636. gospel has

  637. gone out,

  638. thousands of

  639. people have

  640. been cut to

  641. the heart,

  642. they have

  643. repented and

  644. been baptized,

  645. and now they

  646. have God's

  647. new church.

  648. There is

  649. nothing that

  650. they could do

  651. to make up for

  652. their sins,

  653. but forgiveness

  654. is offered,

  655. and they

  656. have a gift

  657. given.

  658. The Holy

  659. Spirit, God

  660. himself would

  661. dwell in

  662. them.

  663. No one

  664. could have

  665. expected that,

  666. to go from

  667. that gut-wrenching

  668. moment of

  669. realization of

  670. what have I

  671. done, to be

  672. told that they

  673. are forgiven,

  674. and they're

  675. getting a gift

  676. instead.

  677. This is

  678. wonderful joy,

  679. this is

  680. amazing freedom.

  681. We see this

  682. structure in

  683. chapter 2,

  684. where God

  685. works a

  686. miracle.

  687. Somebody

  688. preaches the

  689. gospel, and

  690. then thousands

  691. get saved.

  692. It is the

  693. same that

  694. happens in

  695. chapter 3.

  696. A miracle

  697. happens, Peter

  698. preaches the

  699. gospel, and we

  700. see thousands

  701. get saved.

  702. In chapter 3,

  703. the miracle is

  704. a lame man

  705. being healed.

  706. This is our

  707. second point

  708. today, as

  709. we see the

  710. freedom that

  711. comes from

  712. repentance.

  713. One day,

  714. Peter, along

  715. with John, was

  716. heading to the

  717. temple, and

  718. there was a

  719. lame man

  720. begging.

  721. Expecting to

  722. get money,

  723. verse 6,

  724. Peter said,

  725. silver or

  726. gold I do

  727. not have, but

  728. what I do

  729. have I give

  730. you.

  731. In the name

  732. of Jesus

  733. Christ of

  734. Nazareth,

  735. walk.

  736. Taking him

  737. by the right

  738. hand, he

  739. helped him

  740. up, and

  741. instantly the

  742. man's feet

  743. and ankles

  744. became strong.

  745. He jumped

  746. to his feet

  747. and began

  748. to walk.

  749. Then he

  750. went with

  751. them into

  752. the temple

  753. courts, walking

  754. and praising

  755. God.

  756. The people

  757. see the man

  758. jumping and

  759. praising, and

  760. they rush to

  761. Peter and

  762. John.

  763. And again,

  764. Peter gives

  765. context.

  766. He explains,

  767. he preaches

  768. about what God

  769. is doing in

  770. their midst.

  771. God

  772. is doing in

  773. the name of

  774. Jesus.

  775. Why do you

  776. stare at us as if by

  777. our own power or

  778. our godliness we had

  779. made this man walk?

  780. The God of Abraham,

  781. Isaac, and Jacob, the

  782. God of our fathers has

  783. glorified his servant

  784. Jesus.

  785. Verse 15,

  786. you killed the author

  787. of life, but God

  788. raised him from the

  789. dead.

  790. We are witness of

  791. this.

  792. By faith in the

  793. name of Jesus, this

  794. man whom you see and

  795. know has been made

  796. strong.

  797. It is Jesus' name and

  798. the faith that comes

  799. through him that has

  800. completely healed him,

  801. as you can all see.

  802. And again, Peter gets

  803. to the point.

  804. He doesn't just talk

  805. about God just to

  806. talk about him, but

  807. talks about him,

  808. theologizes about him

  809. for the sake of

  810. people's lives.

  811. Verse 19,

  812. repent and turn to

  813. God.

  814. So that your sins

  815. may be wiped out,

  816. that times of

  817. refreshing may come

  818. from the Lord.

  819. This is a wonderful

  820. promise.

  821. Turn to God,

  822. repent.

  823. Your sin will be

  824. dealt with so that

  825. you can have times

  826. of refreshing.

  827. The healing of the

  828. lame man here is

  829. like a physical

  830. illustration of

  831. repentance.

  832. I don't think it's

  833. by coincidence that

  834. coincidence that

  835. this story is in

  836. the middle of

  837. Peter preaching

  838. twice about

  839. repentance.

  840. God's spirit

  841. works in Jesus'

  842. name to set

  843. enslaved people

  844. free.

  845. The lame man was

  846. enslaved to a

  847. broken body and

  848. when he is set

  849. free, his change

  850. is wonderful.

  851. He is jumping for

  852. joy.

  853. He is praising

  854. God.

  855. Peter says,

  856. you have killed

  857. the author of

  858. life, but you

  859. can be free.

  860. You can be free

  861. as this man here

  862. jumping with joy,

  863. so repent.

  864. And at the start

  865. of chapter 4,

  866. which we'll look at

  867. next week,

  868. again, we see

  869. thousands of

  870. people are saved.

  871. in chapter 2

  872. and 3,

  873. we've been given

  874. a picture of

  875. what the new

  876. repentance looks

  877. like, that

  878. comes from the

  879. death, the

  880. resurrection, and

  881. the ascension of

  882. Jesus.

  883. Our repentance

  884. is based not on

  885. what we offer, but

  886. on the completed

  887. works of Jesus.

  888. And we can jump,

  889. we can praise,

  890. and we can be

  891. refreshed,

  892. because our God

  893. forgives us.

  894. There are four

  895. ways that this

  896. helps us to think

  897. through what our

  898. repentance is.

  899. This is our third

  900. point today, what

  901. repentance is, what

  902. it actually looks

  903. like.

  904. So that's the first

  905. of the four things.

  906. We're going to see

  907. four things about

  908. what repentance

  909. looks like.

  910. The first is what

  911. it actually looks

  912. like.

  913. The second, what

  914. the marks of a

  915. repentant person

  916. are.

  917. Third, the

  918. challenges to

  919. repentance.

  920. And the fourth,

  921. the joy from

  922. repentance.

  923. repentance.

  924. Now, if you

  925. don't know Jesus

  926. yet, let me

  927. encourage you to

  928. be reflecting on

  929. the burden of

  930. carrying our own

  931. sin.

  932. Because what God

  933. offers us is joy,

  934. and it is

  935. refreshing.

  936. And all he asks

  937. us to do is to

  938. repent and turn

  939. to him.

  940. So firstly, what

  941. does repentance

  942. look like?

  943. Well, it's not

  944. just saying

  945. sorry.

  946. But repentance

  947. is rooted in an

  948. understanding of

  949. how sinful we

  950. are, of our

  951. actions, our

  952. emotions, our

  953. thoughts, our

  954. beliefs, and our

  955. way of life.

  956. Repentance is

  957. where we have a

  958. high view of

  959. God, where we

  960. see that he is

  961. the one who

  962. dictates what

  963. the best life

  964. is.

  965. and when we

  966. see that our

  967. life doesn't

  968. match what he

  969. would have for

  970. us.

  971. A life of

  972. repentance begins

  973. with that gut

  974. wrenching,

  975. heart cutting

  976. recognition of

  977. having defied

  978. God by choosing

  979. what is wrong

  980. and hurtful to

  981. others, to

  982. ourselves, and

  983. to God.

  984. A life of

  985. repentance is

  986. where we

  987. continually bring

  988. our life before

  989. God in his

  990. word, convicted

  991. by the Holy

  992. Spirit, and

  993. where we will

  994. continually have

  995. those, oh

  996. no, what have

  997. I done moments.

  998. We will see,

  999. ah, this part

  1000. of my life needs

  1001. to change.

  1002. That action, that

  1003. thought, those

  1004. desires don't

  1005. actually line up

  1006. with God's plan

  1007. for my life.

  1008. Secondly, the

  1009. marks of a

  1010. repentant person.

  1011. we've seen some

  1012. of the marks of

  1013. repentant people

  1014. in the passage

  1015. this morning.

  1016. We see people

  1017. responding to

  1018. Peter's teaching.

  1019. We see them, we

  1020. see the crowd

  1021. asking, what

  1022. should we do?

  1023. A mark of a

  1024. repentant person

  1025. is that they are

  1026. appalled by their

  1027. sin.

  1028. The crowd was

  1029. cut to the

  1030. heart.

  1031. They accept the

  1032. consequences.

  1033. They ask, what

  1034. should we do?

  1035. A repentant

  1036. person doesn't

  1037. demand forgiveness.

  1038. A person who

  1039. knows that they

  1040. are in the

  1041. wrong and is

  1042. saying sorry

  1043. doesn't say,

  1044. well, you

  1045. know, sure,

  1046. John, I'll

  1047. pick on you.

  1048. Sure, John, I've

  1049. sinned against you.

  1050. But because you're

  1051. a Christian, you

  1052. have to forgive

  1053. me.

  1054. No, a repentant

  1055. person knows that

  1056. they can't demand

  1057. forgiveness.

  1058. But when they get

  1059. it, they're

  1060. amazed.

  1061. And the marks

  1062. of an unrepentant

  1063. person are the

  1064. opposite of

  1065. these.

  1066. I think we

  1067. can, well, I

  1068. know at least I

  1069. can often have a

  1070. facade of

  1071. repentance.

  1072. I can

  1073. apologize but

  1074. not mean it.

  1075. My sin doesn't

  1076. really appall me.

  1077. I don't hate it.

  1078. I can say, do

  1079. you know what, that

  1080. thing that I did,

  1081. it's fine.

  1082. I can excuse my

  1083. sin.

  1084. Maybe we don't

  1085. accept the

  1086. consequences but

  1087. we try and shift

  1088. the blame.

  1089. You know, they

  1090. demand forgiveness.

  1091. You know, John, you

  1092. really should forgive

  1093. me.

  1094. And forgiveness is

1095. not a gift, it is

  1096. an expectation.

  1097. The unrepentant

  1098. person may just

  1099. say sorry to fix

  1100. the situation, not

  1101. because they are

  1102. sorrowful about

  1103. what they have

  1104. done.

  1105. But repenting

  1106. is really hard.

  1107. And that's the

  1108. third thing we see

  1109. about repentance

  1110. here.

  1111. Repenting is

  1112. challenging.

  1113. And it's actually

  1114. really challenging

  1115. for us to deal

  1116. with our sin and

  1117. to understand its

  1118. consequences.

  1119. It's painful.

  1120. And this is why

  1121. we need God to

  1122. help us.

  1123. This is why

  1124. this repentance

  1125. is new because

  1126. it comes as a

  1127. gift from God.

  1128. it comes with

  1129. the Holy Spirit

  1130. coming upon us.

  1131. The Holy Spirit

  1132. works to convict

  1133. us of our sin.

  1134. We desperately

  1135. need Him because

  1136. otherwise it is

  1137. impossible for us

  1138. to face up to

  1139. our sin.

  1140. We will just be

  1141. an unrepentant

  1142. person who says

  1143. sorry to fix

  1144. situations.

  1145. Instead, we

  1146. need to be cut

  1147. to the heart by

  1148. God's Word and

  1149. God the Holy

  1150. Spirit.

  1151. repenting is

  1152. challenging because

  1153. we can desire to

  1154. protect ourselves.

  1155. I want to save

  1156. face before God

  1157. and before other

  1158. people.

  1159. So I can't

  1160. confess.

  1161. I will confess

  1162. partly.

  1163. I can shift the

  1164. blame or shift

  1165. fault.

1166. I see it in me.

1167. I see it in my

  1168. kids.

1169. I say to one of

  1170. them, did you do

  1171. this?

  1172. And they say,

  1173. he did it

  1174. first.

  1175. He told me to

  1176. do it.

  1177. And I see that

  1178. in myself.

  1179. I have a saying

  1180. that I'm going to

  1181. keep saying to

  1182. myself and to my

  1183. family until I'm

  1184. good at it, which

  1185. is own your own

  1186. stuff.

  1187. Don't shift blame

  1188. to others.

  1189. Own it for

  1190. yourself.

  1191. Own it and

  1192. repent of it.

  1193. And ask the

  1194. Holy Spirit to

  1195. help change.

  1196. Fourth, once we

  1197. have had that,

  1198. oh no, what

  1199. have I done

  1200. moment, a life

  1201. of repentance is

  1202. truly a joy.

  1203. We are accepted

  1204. by God.

  1205. He cherishes

  1206. us.

  1207. We are his

  1208. valued people.

  1209. We are dearly

  1210. loved.

  1211. We are accepted

  1212. into the family

  1213. just like those

  1214. thousands were

  1215. when they

  1216. started the

  1217. church.

  1218. They met

  1219. together and

  1220. we come into

  1221. God's family.

  1222. The burden

  1223. of our sin

  1224. is taken away

  1225. and we can

  1226. have times of

  1227. refreshing.

  1228. We don't need

  1229. to be fearful

  1230. that admitting

  1231. fault will ruin

  1232. our relationship

  1233. with God.

  1234. God already

  1235. knows what we

  1236. are like.

  1237. It's actually

  1238. a picture of

  1239. what authenticity

  1240. is to truly

  1241. know who we

  1242. are.

  1243. and how

  1244. dependent on

  1245. God we

  1246. are to

  1247. admit our

  1248. fault and

  1249. to repent.

  1250. And then we

  1251. can jump for

  1252. joy.

  1253. We can leap.

  1254. We can praise

  1255. God.

  1256. We can even

  1257. do that this

  1258. morning.

  1259. As we sing

  1260. in a moment,

  1261. we can jump

  1262. around.

  1263. That's okay.

  1264. We can do

  1265. that.

  1266. We can have

  1267. joy because

  1268. what should

  1269. have destroyed

  1270. us before God

  1271. has been

  1272. wiped away.

  1273. I know that

  1274. I have

  1275. plenty of

  1276. challenges

  1277. personally

  1278. confessing

  1279. my sin

  1280. and you

  1281. may be

  1282. surprised to

  1283. know this

  1284. but I can

  1285. certainly be a

  1286. stubborn person.

  1287. I know,

  1288. I can see the

  1289. shock on all

  1290. of your faces

  1291. this morning.

  1292. I know when

  1293. I've been in

  1294. the wrong with

  1295. Alyssa,

  1296. my wife,

  1297. that it can

  1298. be hard

  1299. to confess.

  1300. I can much

  1301. prefer to be

  1302. stubborn and

  1303. shift the

  1304. blame and

  1305. actually go,

  1306. no, no, no,

  1307. it was her

  1308. fault.

  1309. It's her

  1310. fault.

  1311. I know that

  1312. when I've been

  1313. in the wrong,

  1314. I've hurt

  1315. Alyssa,

  1316. I've let her

  1317. down.

  1318. I cannot

  1319. want to

  1320. admit that

  1321. but there

  1322. is something

  1323. wonderful

  1324. about

  1325. confessing

  1326. sin.

  1327. When I

  1328. say to

  1329. her,

  1330. Alyssa,

  1331. I am

  1332. sorry,

  1333. I let

  1334. you down,

  1335. I did

  1336. this and

  1337. I was

  1338. wrong and

  1339. she forgives

  1340. me.

  1341. It is

  1342. wonderful.

  1343. It's like

  1344. having a

  1345. burden taken

  1346. off your

  1347. back and

  1348. we are

  1349. brought

  1350. closer.

  1351. We can

  1352. have new

  1353. levels of

  1354. intimacy

  1355. because there

  1356. is no longer

  1357. that burden

  1358. that keeps

  1359. me away

  1360. from her.

  1361. I'm not

  1362. sure if

  1363. you've had

  1364. this in

  1365. a relationship

  1366. before but

  1367. I certainly

  1368. have this.

  1369. If there

  1370. is conflict

  1371. between

  1372. Alyssa

  1373. and I

  1374. because I've

  1375. done the

  1376. wrong thing,

  1377. I don't

  1378. want to

  1379. see her,

  1380. I don't

  1381. want to

  1382. talk to

  1383. her,

  1384. I want

  1385. to hide

  1386. from her

  1387. but when

  1388. I confess,

  1389. when I

  1390. say sorry

  1391. and there

  1392. is forgiveness,

  1393. we are

  1394. brought

  1395. closer,

  1396. no longer

  1397. am I

  1398. hiding from

  1399. her out

  1400. of fear

  1401. that she's

  1402. going to

  1403. point out

  1404. my sin

  1405. but that

  1406. burden

  1407. is taken.

  1408. How much

  1409. more so

  1410. with God

  1411. that the

  1412. burden of

  1413. having a

  1414. broken

  1415. relationship

  1416. is taken

  1417. off and

  1418. it is

  1419. offered to

  1420. us.

  1421. It's just

  1422. like Peter

  1423. holding out

  1424. his hand

  1425. to the

  1426. lame man

  1427. and saying

  1428. do you

  1429. want

  1430. times of

  1431. refreshing?

  1432. Do you

  1433. want

  1434. to have

  1435. times of

  1436. joy?

  1437. Don't miss

  1438. out on

  1439. that oh

  1440. no what

  1441. have I done

  1442. feeling.

  1443. Don't run

  1444. and hide

  1445. from that

  1446. because God

  1447. uses his

  1448. spirit to

  1449. cut us to

  1450. the heart

  1451. to remind

  1452. us of how

  1453. we need to

  1454. repent and

  1455. we can come

  1456. before our

  1457. great God

  1458. and repent

  1459. not from

  1460. fear but

  1461. joy.

  1462. Not because

  1463. of who we

  1464. are but

  1465. because we

  1466. have a

  1467. loving and

  1468. merciful God.

  1469. Let me

  1470. pray for us.

  1471. Heavenly

  1472. Father,

  1473. Lord,

  1474. you are

  1475. so wonderful,

  1476. you are

  1477. so great.

  1478. you are

  1479. so merciful

  1480. that you

  1481. have dealt

  1482. with our

  1483. sin and

  1484. you offer

  1485. us times

  1486. of refreshing

  1487. and joy.

  1488. Father,

  1489. we ask

  1490. that you

  1491. would

  1492. continually

  1493. cut us

  1494. to the

  1495. heart.

  1496. As we

  1497. read your

  1498. word,

  1499. be working

  1500. your spirit

  1501. in us so

  1502. that we

  1503. know how

  1504. we need

  1505. to repent

  1506. and what

  1507. we need

  1508. to repent

  1509. of,

  1510. Lord.

  1511. Father,

  1512. continue to

  1513. do this,

  1514. sanctify us,

  1515. Lord,

  1516. so that we

  1517. would have

  1518. our burdens

  1519. taken off,

  1520. so that we

  1521. can rejoice,

  1522. so that we

  1523. can stand

  1524. before you

  1525. when we

  1526. meet you,

  1527. Lord.

  1528. Amen.

  1529. Amen.

  1530. Amen.

  1531. Amen.

  1532. Amen.

  1533. Amen.

  1534. Amen.

  1535. Amen.

  1536. Amen.

  1537. Amen.

  1538. Amen.

  1539. Amen.

  1540. Amen.

  1541. Amen.

  1542. Amen.

  1543. Amen.

  1544. Amen.

  1545. Amen.

  1546. Amen.

  1547. Amen.
