  1. Greetings, and so glad to speak with you again.

  2. If you do not know me, my name is John Lau,

  3. and I'm still the minister here at St. Paul's.

  4. Do you like to follow TV series?

  5. I was following a couple from the US,

  6. but I was forced to stop because the channel is working out

  7. whether they will continue the show or not.

  8. TV channels always leave the viewers hanging

  9. between series, and we are left to wonder

  10. what is going to happen next.

  11. And what is worse is they also do not tell you

  12. when we start the series,

  13. or they will start a very similar franchise,

  14. like all the different CSI and NCIS series.

  15. And I really, really don't like the cliffhangers

  16. in between series.

  17. We are in the middle of a series looking through the book of Acts

  18. in the New Testament.

  19. We are looking into how the first generation

  20. of believers of Jesus live out their life in a new world.

  21. We come to a point in the book of Acts,

  22. there are four cliffhangers.

  23. But these kinds of cliffhangers are good and worth looking into.

  24. These are the kinds of intercession that I enjoy.

  25. The chapter we are looking into today can be divided into three mini-series

  26. based on the three main characters.

  27. They are Philip, Simon the sorcerer,

  28. and the Ethiopian unit with no name.

  29. So let's ask two questions for each of these characters.

  30. What happened to them?

  31. And what is next?

  32. If you already have turned your Bible,

  33. or if you haven't, please turn with me to Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  34. And we'll begin with Philip from verse 4.

  35. In verse 1 to 3, there are a couple of characters

  36. called Stephen and Saul,

  37. which we have already addressed last week.

  38. Stephen was chosen to be a leader of the early church,

  39. and he became the first martyr.

  40. And Saul is a major character in the development of Christianity.

  41. Luke, the writer of Book of Acts,

  42. has given us a bit of teaser, like a movie trailer,

  43. in the chapter leading into our chapter,

  44. and following our passage today.

  45. Since we'll be meeting Saul,

  46. and Luke dedicated a whole episode for him next week,

  47. I will not spoil your enjoyment.

  48. Stay tuned and come back next week to find out what happened to Saul,

  49. and what's next about the proclamation of God's good news of salvation.

  50. After Stephen was martyred towards the end of last chapter,

  51. naturally, when a significant local leader in any movement was killed,

  52. we were asked, what's going to happen to the movement?

  53. In Acts 1, chapter 8, told us that

  54. Jesus started this saving work of God

  55. by commissioning his disciples

  56. to take the good news of salvation

  57. from Judea to Samaria,

  58. to the Gentiles,

  59. and to the end of the earth.

  60. Stephen's death

  61. started this expansion of proclamation of good news

  62. to the new ground,

  63. and we came to see what happens to another leader, Philip.

  64. So in chapter 8, first one says,

  65. On that day, a great persecution

  66. broke out against a church in Jerusalem,

  67. and all except the apostles

  68. were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

  69. And then we jump down to verse 4.

  70. Those who had been scattered preached the word

  71. wherever they went.

  72. Philip went down to a city in Samaria

  73. and proclaimed the Messiah there.

  74. What has happened to Stephen

  75. has become an impetus.

  76. The believers had stayed in Jerusalem

  77. since chapter 2,

  78. is now scattered.

  79. The scattering is a corrective action

  80. done by God

  81. because the good news of salvation

  82. was meant to go out.

  83. Philip was chosen with Stephen

  84. initially to look after food distribution

  85. among the believers in Jerusalem.

  86. Now, he went down to Samaria,

  87. and instead of distributing food

  88. for physical need,

  89. he proclaimed the Messiah

  90. and preached the word of Jesus

  91. to provide food for the soul.

  92. A new proclamation has begun.

  93. It's new because we have new agents

  94. and new locations.

  95. Adding to the apostles

  96. who remain in Jerusalem.

  97. Now we have believers

  98. scattered throughout Judea and Samaria,

  99. preaching and proclaiming as they go.

  100. Philip brought the gospel

  101. to a city in Samaria,

  102. proclaiming Jesus.

  103. Verse 6 to 8 tell us

  104. how the crowd responded.

  105. They say,

  106. when they heard Philip

  107. and saw the signs that he performed,

  108. they all paid close attention

  109. to what he said.

  110. And there were great joys

  111. in the city

  112. because many immediate needs

  113. were fulfilled.

  114. Then in verse 12,

  115. when they believed Philip

  116. as he proclaimed the good news

  117. of the kingdom of God

  118. and the name of Jesus Christ,

  119. they were baptized,

  120. both men and women.

  121. They heard and accepted the good news.

  122. They responded

  123. by their action,

  124. just like those believers

  125. back in Acts 2.

  126. This is not the first time

  127. the name of Jesus

  128. proclaimed in Samaria.

  129. In John chapter 4,

    John 4:39–42

  130. verse 39 to 42,

  131. Jesus' name was proclaimed

  132. by a woman

  133. who met Jesus.

  134. And this also happened

  135. to the crowd.

  136. John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  137. Many of the Samaritans

  138. from that time

  139. believed in him

  140. because of the woman's testimony.

  141. So when the Samaritan

  142. came to him,

  143. they urged him

  144. to stay with them,

  145. and he stayed.

  146. And because of his words,

  147. many more

  148. become believers.

  149. They said to the woman,

  150. we no longer believe

  151. just because of what you said,

  152. but we have heard for ourselves,

  153. and we know this man

  154. really is the savior

  155. of the world.

  156. From these two occasions,

  157. if I'm going to think

  158. about a body part

  159. to represent the people

  160. of Samaria,

  161. I would definitely

  162. define them

  163. as a people

  164. of active ears,

  165. actively listening,

  166. attentive,

  167. and responsive.

  168. They all heard

  169. and believed

  170. the proclamation

  171. and responded.

  172. They believed

  173. what they heard

  174. from the witness,

  175. but they did not

  176. stop there.

  177. They seek out

  178. the object

  179. of their belief

  180. to confirm

  181. he really

  182. is the savior

  183. of the world.

  184. Our current climate,

  185. living under

  186. the shadow

  187. of a pandemic,

  188. has opened up

  189. a lot of people

  190. towards the idea

  191. that they may

  192. also need a savior.

  193. They want

  194. some comfort

  195. to their worries

  196. and religion

  197. and religion

  198. seems to be able

  199. to provide.

  200. It would be so great

  201. if they have

  202. the active ears

  203. of Samaritans

  204. to truly know

  205. and confirm

  206. Jesus really

  207. is the savior

  208. of the world.

  209. our current

  210. climate

  211. also reveals

  212. a lot of

  213. ignorance

  214. and arrogance

  215. of religious people,

  216. believing that

  217. they are above

  218. the health advice

  219. of their government

  220. because their God

  221. will protect them.

  222. And we can see

  223. the sad consequences

  224. of many

  225. infection clusters

  226. from religious

  227. establishments.

  228. is it possible

  229. that they aren't

  230. really following

  231. the real savior

  232. and just going

  233. through motions?

  234. Is it possible

  235. that they believe

  236. just because of

  237. what the other

  238. humans tell them

  239. and have not

  240. heed for themselves

  241. and come to

  242. real knowledge

  243. of who really

  244. is the savior

  245. of the world?

  246. People will end up

  247. putting their life

  248. and the life

  249. of other people

  250. and many other

  251. people's at risk

  252. if they do not

  253. take God seriously.

  254. Our second character

  255. gives us a very

  256. stern warning

  257. that something

  258. serious

  259. is at hand.

  260. It is more

  261. deadly

  262. than catching

  263. COVID-19

  264. and that character

  265. is Simon the sorcerer.

  266. Let's read

  267. what happened to him,

  268. see what happened

  269. next starting

  270. from verse 9.

  271. Now for some time

  272. a man named Simon

  273. had practiced

  274. sorcery in the city

  275. and amazed

  276. all the people

  277. of Samaria.

  278. He boasts that

  279. he was someone

  280. great and all

  281. the people

  282. both high and low

  283. give him their

  284. attention and

  285. exclaim,

  286. this man is really

  287. called the great

  288. power of God.

  289. They follow him

  290. because he had

  291. amazed them

  292. for a long time

  293. with his sorcery.

  294. I believe we can

  295. assume that

  296. Simon is not

  297. originally from

  298. Samaria by the

  299. way that he

  300. was introduced.

  301. He was a man

  302. that came to

  303. the city

  304. and amazed

  305. all the people

  306. of Samaria.

  307. He's most likely

  308. a traveling

  309. sorcerer,

  310. making a living

  311. out of selling

  312. sorcery.

  313. And when he

  314. came to Samaria,

  315. he got so much

  316. attention and

  317. publicity,

  318. so he stayed.

  319. If we read on,

  320. it says,

  321. but when they

  322. believed Philip

  323. as he proclaimed

  324. the good news

  325. of the kingdom

  326. of God

  327. and the name

  328. of Jesus Christ,

  329. they were baptized

  330. both men and

  331. women.

  332. Simon himself

  333. believed and

  334. was baptized.

  335. Simon seems to

  336. be a great

  337. comfort.

  338. He believed

  339. and responded.

  340. He got baptized.

  341. He followed

  342. Philip everywhere.

  343. He was devoted

  344. and paid full

  345. attention.

  346. So what is

  347. the danger?

  348. What was wrong

  349. with his situation?

  350. Let's look at him

  351. closely again.

  352. Let's go back

  353. to verse 9.

  354. He boasts

  355. that he was

  356. someone great

  357. and all the people

  358. gave him

  359. their attention.

  360. Then in verse 11,

  361. he had amazed

  362. people for a long

  363. time with his

  364. sorcery.

  365. And verse 13,

  366. he followed

  367. Philip everywhere,

  368. astonished by the

  369. great sign

  370. and miracle

  371. he saw.

  372. Do you start

  373. to see the picture

  374. of who he is?

  375. He's an attention

  376. seeker.

  377. He put his

  378. attention at

  379. great signs

  380. and miracles.

  381. He's not like

  382. the Samaritan

  383. that wanted to

  384. find out for

  385. themselves who

  386. Jesus really is.

  387. He seems to

  388. have become a

  389. Christian for the

  390. wrong reason.

  391. Why do I say

  392. that?

  393. Let's read on

  394. verse 18 to 19.

  395. When Simon

  396. saw the Spirit

  397. was given to

  398. all at the

  399. laying hand

  400. of the

  401. apostle's hand,

  402. he offered

  403. them money

  404. and said,

  405. give me also

  406. this ability

  407. so that

  408. everyone on

  409. whom I lay

  410. my hands

  411. may receive

  412. the Holy Spirit.

  413. When Peter and

  414. John were sent

  415. from Jerusalem

  416. to Samaria

  417. to bring

  418. encouragement

  419. and spiritual

  420. gifts,

  421. they prayed

  422. for the people

  423. to receive

  424. the Holy Spirit.

  425. Simon wanted

  426. that ability

  427. too,

  428. and he thought

  429. he could buy

  430. it off Peter

  431. and John.

  432. Why does he

  433. want the ability?

  434. It say,

  435. so that everyone

  436. on whom he

  437. lay his hands

  438. may receive

  439. the Holy Spirit.

  440. Do you remember

  441. how the people

  442. reacted to him

  443. earlier?

  444. They treated him

  445. like a superstar,

  446. and maybe that

  447. was what he

  448. missed,

  449. the feeling

  450. of being

  451. important,

  452. being the

  453. center of

  454. the universe.

  455. His desire

  456. blinded him.

  457. He no longer

  458. see the price

  459. that God

  460. had paid

  461. for him,

  462. that he

  463. is purchased

  464. by the life

  465. of God's

  466. one and only

  467. son.

  468. He is blinded

  469. to how much

  470. God

  471. values him.

  472. Instead of

  473. rejoicing and

  474. full of gratitude

  475. towards God,

  476. he wants to

  477. get back to

  478. his own way

  479. of life,

  480. to represent

  481. the great

  482. power of God.

  483. He is

  484. blinded to the

  485. fact that

  486. he was not

  487. representing the

  488. real savior

  489. of the world.

  490. All along,

  491. he was puffing up

  492. the idol of

  493. his self-gratification,

  494. the idol of

  495. himself.

  496. He allowed

  497. bitterness to

  498. grow within

  499. him.

  500. He craved

  501. power and

  502. attention,

  503. but did not

  504. get what he

  505. wanted.

  506. he is

  507. unsatisfied

  508. with God

  509. and with

  510. his new

  511. life.

  512. His

  513. situation

  514. in this

  515. stage is

  516. diastrate.

  517. And Peter

  518. said to him

  519. in verse

  520. 20,

  521. may your

  522. money perish

  523. with you

  524. because you

  525. thought you

  526. could buy

  527. the gift of

  528. God with

  529. money.

  530. You have

  531. no part of

  532. share in

  533. this ministry

  534. because your

  535. heart is

  536. not right

  537. before God.

  538. this is a

  539. very serious

  540. indictment,

  541. but Peter

  542. did not

  543. leave him

  544. hanging.

  545. Peter did

  546. not say

  547. he has no

  548. part or

  549. share in

  550. the kingdom

  551. of God.

  552. It was in

  553. the ministry

  554. of God

  555. that Simon

  556. is not fit

  557. to be

  558. involved in

  559. at this

  560. stage.

  561. And Peter

  562. goes on

  563. saying,

  564. repent of

  565. this wickedness

  566. and pray to

  567. the Lord

  568. in the hope

  569. that he

  570. may forgive

  571. you for

  572. having such

  573. a thought

  574. in your

  575. heart.

  576. For I

  577. see that

  578. you are

  579. full of

  580. bitterness

  581. and

  582. captive

  583. in sin.

  584. Peter

  585. knows

  586. where

  587. Simon

  588. is at

  589. and

  590. calls

  591. him

  592. to

  593. repentance

  594. and

  595. direct

  596. him

  597. to

  598. how

  599. to

  600. get

  601. right

  602. with

  603. God.

  604. Pray

  605. in the

  606. hope

  607. for

  608. forgiveness

  609. to

  610. address

  611. the

  612. bitterness

  613. of

  614. the

  615. heart

  616. and

  617. flee

  618. from

  619. sin.

  620. At

  621. that

  622. point,

  623. we are

  624. told Simon

  625. respond by

  626. requesting Peter

  627. to pray

  628. for him.

  629. Pray to

  630. the Lord

  631. for me

  632. so that

  633. nothing you

  634. have said

  635. may happen

  636. to me.

  637. It seems

  638. to be

  639. right to

  640. respond when

  641. someone calls

  642. you to

  643. repentance

  644. to ask

  645. for prayer.

  646. But

  647. something

  648. seems very

  649. strange to

  650. me.

  651. What

  652. would it

  653. be like

  654. if Peter

  655. followed

  656. precisely

  657. what

  658. Simon

  659. has

  660. requested

  661. and

  662. pray

  663. that

  664. nothing

  665. he

  666. has

  667. said

  668. may

  669. happen

  670. to

  671. Simon.

  672. Does

  673. that

  674. mean

  675. Simon's

  676. money

  677. will

  678. not

  679. perish

  680. with

  681. him?

  682. That

  683. he

  684. can

  685. take

  686. part

  687. and

  688. share

  689. in

  690. the

  691. ministry?

  692. That

  693. he

  694. does

  695. not

  696. repent

  697. of

  698. his

  699. wickedness

  700. and

  701. the

  702. Lord

  703. does

  704. not

  705. forgive

  706. him?

  707. We

  708. are

  709. left

  710. with a

  711. huge

  712. cliffhanger

  713. because

  714. Luke

  715. did not

  716. tell us

  717. what

  718. happened

  719. to

  720. him.

  721. Luke

  722. got

  723. back

  724. to

  725. the

  726. main

  727. story

  728. of

  729. what

  730. the

  731. book

  732. of

  733. Acts

  734. is

  735. about.

  736. It's

  737. about

  738. the

  739. proclamation

  740. of the

  741. word

  742. of the

  743. Lord.

  744. In

  745. verse

  746. 25,

  747. after

  748. they

  749. had

  750. further

  751. proclaimed

  752. the

  753. word

  754. of

  755. the

  756. Lord

  757. and

  758. testified

  759. about

  760. Jesus,

  761. Peter

  762. and

  763. John

  764. returned

  765. to

  766. Jerusalem

  767. and

  768. preached

  769. the

  770. gospel

  771. in

  772. many

  773. Samaritan

  774. villages.

  775. What

  776. a

  777. cliffhanger!

  778. I

  779. believe

  780. Luke

  781. lets

  782. at a

  783. cliffhanger

  784. for

  785. excellent

  786. reason.

  787. We

  788. need

  789. to

  790. realize

  791. that

  792. starting

  793. right

  794. is

  795. only

  796. the

  797. beginning.

  798. And

  799. it

  800. is

  801. so

  802. easy

  803. things

  804. slowly

  805. lure

  806. back

  807. to our

  808. old

  809. way.

  810. This

  811. cliffhanger

  812. is

  813. reminding

  814. us

  815. to

  816. continue

  817. to

  818. examine

  819. our

  820. heart

  821. to

  822. make

  823. sure

  824. it

  825. is

  826. right

  827. before

  828. God.

  829. To

  830. make

  831. sure

  832. you

  833. have

  834. not

  835. elevated

  836. any

  837. other

  838. things

  839. above

  840. God.

  841. to

  842. continue

  843. to

  844. repent

  845. of

  846. ingratitude,

  847. pray to

  848. the

  849. Lord

  850. in

  851. hope

  852. for

  853. forgiveness,

  854. not

  855. to

  856. allow

  857. sin

  858. to

  859. take

  860. hold

  861. within

  862. us,

  863. and

  864. to

  865. watch

  866. out

  867. about

  868. how

  869. we

  870. respond

  871. to

  872. correction.

  873. Now

  874. Peter

  875. and

  876. John

  877. were

  878. preaching

  879. gospel

  880. in

  881. many

  882. Samaritan

  883. villages

  884. as

  885. they

  886. traveled

  887. back

  888. to

  889. Jerusalem.

  890. So

  891. God

  892. kept

  893. using

  894. Philip

  895. to

  896. proclaim

  897. to

  898. the

  899. end

  900. of

  901. the

  902. earth.

  903. Let's

  904. read on

  905. from

  906. verse 26

  907. to

  908. 27.

  909. Now

  910. an angel

  911. of the

  912. Lord

  913. said to

  914. Philip,

  915. go south

  916. to the

  917. road that

  918. goes down

  919. from

  920. Jerusalem

  921. to

  922. Gaza.

  923. So he

  924. started out

  925. and on

  926. his way

  927. he met

  928. an

  929. Ethiopian

  930. unit,

  931. an

  932. important

  933. official

  934. in charge

  935. of all

  936. the

  937. treasury

  938. of the

  939. queen

  940. of

  941. Ethiopians.

  942. We're

  943. now

  944. introduced

  945. to

  946. a

  947. unit

  948. with

  949. no

  950. name,

  951. but

  952. with

  953. a

  954. considerable

  955. credential.

  956. He is

  957. a

  958. significant

  959. official

  960. in

  961. charge

  962. of

  963. all

  964. the

  965. treasury

  966. of

  967. the

  968. queens

  969. of

  970. Ethiopia.

  971. And

  972. despite

  973. his

  974. status,

  975. he is

  976. an

  977. incomplete

  978. man.

  979. And

  980. these

  981. incomplete

  982. men

  983. have

  984. gone up

  985. to

  986. Jerusalem

  987. to

  988. worship

  989. and on

  990. his

  991. way

  992. home.

  993. He

  994. traveled

  995. to

  996. Jerusalem

  997. to

  998. worship

  999. and

  1000. according

  1001. to

  1002. the

  1003. temple

  1004. rules

  1005. at

  1006. the

  1007. time,

  1008. he

  1009. will

  1010. be

  1011. turned

  1012. back

  1013. without

  1014. any

  1015. success.

  1016. The

  1017. temple

  1018. do

  1019. not

  1020. allow

  1021. incomplete

  1022. people

  1023. to

  1024. enter.

  1025. An

  1026. incomplete

  1027. man

  1028. being

  1029. rejected

  1030. with

  1031. a

  1032. successful

  1033. adventure.

  1034. I

  1035. wonder

  1036. how

  1037. he

  1038. will

  1039. feel.

  1040. What

  1041. would

  1042. you

  1043. do

  1044. if

  1045. you

  1046. are

  1047. this

  1048. person?

  1049. Luke

  1050. told us

  1051. that

  1052. he

  1053. was

  1054. sitting

  1055. in

  1056. his

  1057. chariot

  1058. reading

  1059. the

  1060. book

  1061. of

  1062. Isaiah

  1063. the

  1064. prophet.

  1065. Do

  1066. you

  1067. see

  1068. how

  1069. similar

  1070. he

  1071. is

  1072. with

  1073. the

  1074. Samaritan

  1075. that

  1076. was

  1077. mentioned

  1078. before?

  1079. He

  1080. goes to

  1081. a

  1082. source

  1083. to

  1084. learn

  1085. about

  1086. worship.

  1087. The

  1088. people

  1089. at the

  1090. temple

  1091. may

  1092. have

  1093. rejected

  1094. him,

  1095. but

  1096. he

  1097. did

  1098. not

  1099. stop

  1100. there.

  1101. He

  1102. goes,

  1103. God

  1104. knows

  1105. this

  1106. incomplete

  1107. man

  1108. is

  1109. searching

  1110. for

  1111. him,

  1112. so

  1113. God

  1114. sent

  1115. Philip

  1116. to

  1117. help

  1118. this

  1119. person.

  1120. I

  1121. really

  1122. like

  1123. the

  1124. interaction

  1125. between

  1126. them.

  1127. The

  1128. spirit

  1129. told

  1130. Philip

  1131. go to

  1132. that

  1133. chariot

  1134. and

  1135. stay

  1136. near it.

  1137. Then

  1138. Philip

  1139. ran up

  1140. to

  1141. the

  1142. chariot

  1143. and

  1144. heard

  1145. the

  1146. man

  1147. reading

  1148. a

  1149. side

  1150. of

  1151. the

  1152. prophet.

  1153. Do

  1154. you

  1155. understand

  1156. what

  1157. you

  1158. are

  1159. reading?

  1160. How

  1161. could

  1162. I

  1163. unless

  1164. someone

  1165. explained

  1166. to

  1167. me?

  1168. So

  1169. he

  1170. invited

  1171. Philip

  1172. to

  1173. come

  1174. up

  1175. and

  1176. sit

  1177. with

  1178. him.

  1179. I

  1180. like

  1181. this

  1182. interaction

  1183. because

  1184. this

  1185. scene

  1186. is

  1187. driven

  1188. by

  1189. the

  1190. spirit.

  1191. Philip

  1192. acts

  1193. in

  1194. obedience.

  1195. The

  1196. man

  1197. shows

  1198. his

  1199. love

  1200. for

  1201. God's

  1202. word

  1203. with

  1204. humble

  1205. authenticity.

  1206. All

  1207. speak

  1208. to

  1209. what

  1210. we

  1211. value

  1212. here

  1213. in

  1214. St.

  1215. Paul

  1216. Cheswood.

  1217. Luke

  1218. told us

  1219. the

  1220. person

  1221. was

  1222. reading

  1223. a

  1224. passage

  1225. about

  1226. personal

  1227. sacrifice,

  1228. submission,

  1229. humiliation,

  1230. the

  1231. deprivity

  1232. of

  1233. justice,

  1234. the

  1235. impossibility

  1236. of

  1237. having

  1238. offspring.

  1239. All

  1240. these

  1241. seem

  1242. to

  1243. be

  1244. speaking

  1245. about

  1246. this

  1247. incomplete

  1248. man

  1249. himself.

  1250. And

  1251. he

  1252. asked

  1253. Philip,

  1254. tell

  1255. me

  1256. please,

  1257. who

  1258. is

  1259. the

  1260. prophet

  1261. talking

  1262. about?

  1263. Himself

  1264. or

  1265. someone

  1266. else?

  1267. Then

  1268. Philip

  1269. began

  1270. with

  1271. that

  1272. very

  1273. passage

  1274. of

  1275. scripture

  1276. and

  1277. told

  1278. him

  1279. the

  1280. good

  1281. news

  1282. about

  1283. Jesus.

  1284. God

  1285. sent

  1286. Philip

  1287. to

  1288. this

  1289. man

  1290. to

  1291. make

  1292. sure

  1293. he

  1294. understands

  1295. the

  1296. Bible

  1297. is

  1298. not

  1299. about

  1300. us.

  1301. What

  1302. is

  1303. written

  1304. in

  1305. the

  1306. Bible

  1307. is

  1308. the

  1309. good

  1310. news

  1311. about

  1312. Jesus.

  1313. It

  1314. is

  1315. not

  1316. an

  1317. encyclopedia

  1318. about

  1319. your

  1320. life

  1321. or

  1322. us.

  1323. When

  1324. we

  1325. look

  1326. into

  1327. the

  1328. Bible,

  1329. the

  1330. ultimate

  1331. question

  1332. is

  1333. who

  1334. is

  1335. God

  1336. and

  1337. what

  1338. is

  1339. he

  1340. doing

  1341. with

  1342. his

  1343. people?

  1344. this

  1345. incomplete

  1346. man

  1347. traveled

  1348. to

  1349. Jerusalem

  1350. to

  1351. worship

  1352. and

  1353. he

  1354. got to

  1355. complete

  1356. what

  1357. he

  1358. set

  1359. out

  1360. to

  1361. do

  1362. because

  1363. God,

  1364. the

  1365. one

  1366. that

  1367. he

  1368. should

  1369. worship,

  1370. reached out

  1371. to him

  1372. through

  1373. Philip,

  1374. his

  1375. believer.

  1376. man

  1377. was

  1378. to

  1379. man

  1380. to

  1381. worship,

  1382. his

  1383. attempt

  1384. to

  1385. worship

  1386. was

  1387. rejected,

  1388. but

  1389. he

  1390. kept

  1391. searching

  1392. and

  1393. at

  1394. the

  1395. end

  1396. he

  1397. went

  1398. on

  1399. his

  1400. way

  1401. rejoicing.

  1402. This

  1403. all

  1404. made

  1405. possible

  1406. because

  1407. God

  1408. reached

  1409. out

  1410. to

  1411. him

  1412. and

  1413. he

  1414. responded

  1415. humbly

  1416. with

  1417. authenticity

  1418. about

  1419. where

  1420. he

  1421. is

  1422. at

  1423. in

  1424. his

  1425. life.

  1426. Something

  1427. miraculous

  1428. happened

  1429. to him

  1430. which

  1431. gave us

  1432. another

  1433. cliffhanger

  1434. of this

  1435. passage.

  1436. He

  1437. stopped

  1438. the

  1439. chariot

  1440. so

  1441. Philip

  1442. could

  1443. baptize

  1444. him

  1445. in

  1446. around

  1447. verse

  1448. 36

  1449. to

  1450. 39

  1451. and

  1452. then

  1453. in

  1454. 39

  1455. when

  1456. they

  1457. came

  1458. off

  1459. the

  1460. water

  1461. the

  1462. spirit

  1463. of

  1464. the

  1465. Lord

  1466. suddenly

  1467. took

  1468. Philip

  1469. away

  1470. and

  1471. the

  1472. unit

  1473. did

  1474. not

  1475. see

  1476. him

  1477. again

  1478. but

  1479. went

  1480. on

  1481. his

  1482. way

  1483. rejoicing.

  1484. What

  1485. had

  1486. happened

  1487. to

  1488. Philip

  1489. seems

  1490. to

  1491. not

  1492. bother

  1493. him

  1494. at

  1495. all.

  1496. All

  1497. we

  1498. know

  1499. is

  1500. he

  1501. is

  1502. now

  1503. complete

  1504. and

  1505. went

  1506. on

  1507. his

  1508. way

  1509. rejoicing.

  1510. What

  1511. are you

  1512. looking

  1513. for

  1514. to

  1515. complete

  1516. you?

  1517. Are

  1518. you

  1519. looking

  1520. into

  1521. your

  1522. career?

  1523. A

  1524. certain

  1525. kind

  1526. of

  1527. body?

  1528. A

  1529. partner

  1530. to

  1531. start

  1532. a

  1533. family?

  1534. Or

  1535. having

  1536. certain

  1537. things?

  1538. St.

  1539. Augustine

  1540. opened

  1541. a

  1542. confession

  1543. confessing

  1544. that

  1545. to

  1546. praise

  1547. you

  1548. is

  1549. a

  1550. desire

  1551. of

  1552. man

  1553. because

  1554. you

  1555. have

  1556. made

  1557. us

  1558. for

  1559. yourself

  1560. and

  1561. our

  1562. heart

  1563. is

  1564. restless

  1565. until

  1566. it

  1567. rests

  1568. in

  1569. you.

  1570. You

  1571. have

  1572. made

  1573. us

  1574. for

  1575. yourself

  1576. and

  1577. our

  1578. heart

  1579. is

  1580. restless

  1581. until

  1582. it

  1583. rests

  1584. in

  1585. you.

  1586. Jesus

  1587. the

  1588. real

  1589. savior

  1590. of

  1591. the

  1592. world

  1593. is

  1594. our

  1595. place

  1596. of

  1597. identity.

  1598. He

  1599. is

  1600. what

  1601. completes

  1602. us.

  1603. There

  1604. are

  1605. a few

  1606. cliffhangers

  1607. in our

  1608. passage

  1609. today

  1610. and I'm

  1611. sure we

  1612. all feel

  1613. the cliffhanger

  1614. of COVID-19.

  1615. Feels

  1616. like our

  1617. life is

  1618. hanging

  1619. about.

  1620. God is

  1621. calling

  1622. you and

  1623. warning

  1624. you to

  1625. take this

  1626. time to

  1627. examine

  1628. yourself.

  1629. to make

  1630. sure there

  1631. is no

  1632. bitterness

  1633. that builds

  1634. up in

  1635. your

  1636. heart.

  1637. God is

  1638. reaching out

  1639. to you

  1640. to set

  1641. you free

  1642. from sin

  1643. because his

  1644. one and only

  1645. son Jesus

  1646. had died

  1647. on the

  1648. cross for

  1649. you and

  1650. raised from

  1651. the dead

  1652. to set

  1653. you free.

  1654. When you

  1655. are certain

  1656. that Jesus

  1657. is really

  1658. the savior

  1659. of the

  1660. world

  1661. and he

  1662. is your

  1663. place of

  1664. identity,

  1665. he has

  1666. complete

  1667. you and

  1668. you can

  1669. go on

  1670. your way

  1671. rejoicing.

  1672. If you

  1673. have started

  1674. following

  1675. Jesus but

  1676. have been

  1677. lured back

  1678. to your

  1679. old way,

  1680. now is

  1681. a good

  1682. time to

  1683. repent and

  1684. pray to

  1685. God for

  1686. forgiveness.

  1687. If you

  1688. do not

  1689. know Jesus

  1690. as savior,

  1691. now is

  1692. a good

  1693. time to

  1694. ask for

  1695. explanation

  1696. about the

  1697. good news

  1698. of Jesus

  1699. and get

  1700. to know

  1701. God.

  1702. He knows

  1703. you are

  1704. looking for

  1705. him and

  1706. maybe already

  1707. sending

  1708. someone your

  1709. way to

  1710. help you

  1711. define him.

  1712. Today is

  1713. a day you

  1714. can rest

  1715. your heart

  1716. in God

  1717. and be

  1718. complete

  1719. in him.
