  1. Good morning, everyone. It's great to be with you in church this morning or joining with you online to kick off this season of reflection and celebration and looking forward to what God has next for us as a church.

  2. So be grateful if you've got your Bibles, open up to Revelation chapter 1. That'll be fantastic.

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  3. In May 2017, Australian tennis legend and now Pentecostal Christian pastor from Perth, Margaret Court, wrote an open letter opposing the support of same-sex marriage by Qantas Airlines.

  4. It received a whole heap of feedback at the time.

  5. And one of the feedbacks, one of the responses to Margaret's letter came from another tennis great, Martina Navratilova.

  6. She tweeted on her account, thank you, Qantas, for your support.

  7. And Margaret, you've gone too far. Shame on you.

  8. And it came with a hashtag, the wrong side of history.

  9. It feels like that sometimes, I think, as a Christian, particularly in the modern West, that we are on the wrong side of history.

  10. That is, history was for, sorry, Christianity was for times past, but we've kind of grown up as a society and now we just leave it behind.

  11. You need to get new ideas, new thoughts about life and how life works.

  12. Our society has been moving further and further away and even over the time of Vision 2020, in the last 11 years as a church, it has rapidly moved further and further away from Christian truths.

  13. The foundation, in fact, of our society.

  14. The Christian worldview is not just regarded as outdated.

  15. It's not just the wrong side of history.

  16. It's viewed as wrong in some circles and, amongst other circles, even deviant.

  17. Church attendance is falling.

  18. Christians in society are sinking into the shadows, hoping not to be identified as such, just wanting to stay under the radar.

  19. So the question is, before us, as we just reflect on the past and as we look forward to the future,

  20. what future does the Christian faith have?

  21. What future does the church have in our culture?

  22. What we're doing in this series, in terms of celebrating what God has done in the past and his work amongst us in the last 11 years,

  23. and we also start to form a path for what is next for us as a church,

  24. is this moment of this season we're in right now, this term, nothing more than just the band playing on the Titanic as it sinks,

  25. entertaining us as we go down.

  26. But we're almost at the end.

  27. Is that what's happening for us?

  28. Well, obviously, I think no.

  29. But what we need to see as a church, what we need to see as Christians, and we need to see it again and again and again and again,

  30. what we need to be convinced of again and again is that Jesus is reigning.

  31. He's alive as much as you and I are alive, even more so that you and I are alive,

  32. and he is reigning over all that is still.

  33. He's resurrected, ascended, and he rules the universe.

  34. We need to have him speak into the situations in our lives, in our society, in our church.

  35. We need to know that God is right now on his throne in control in heaven,

  36. and unlike us right now with masks on our faces and silent in the singing,

  37. he is surrounded by myriads and myriads and myriads and myriads of angels,

  38. beings far greater and glorious than us, on their knees, singing at the tops of their voices,

  39. declaring his praise and worthy because he is so far even beyond them.

  40. He is so great and glorious.

  41. So right now when we can't sing, he is hearing the thunderous roar of that singing around his throne.

  42. We need to see the way that this God who is so patient will one day pulverize wickedness and injustice

  43. and obliterate those who oppose him and set up his kingdom for the eternal joy of all who trust him.

  44. What we need in this season is the book of Revelation and these verses which are in front of us right now.

  45. So I'd be grateful if you had your Bibles open, Revelation chapter 1.

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  46. If you have to, if you're using an electronic device, shut down every other app.

  47. Shut down your notifications.

  48. You need to be focused here right now.

  49. Go to the St. Paul's app.

  50. Shut down every app apart from this one.

  51. Get to the St. Paul's app and there's a bit of an outline there for our message today.

  52. Three points I want to get to.

  53. First of all, which king is on the throne?

  54. See, the message of Revelation was so essential for the first recipients of this letter about 2,000 years ago.

  55. The first recipients of this letter were Christians living in the Roman Empire.

  56. They were living in the Roman Empire and they were facing the biggest nightmare of their lives.

  57. The storm clouds of persecution were building for them.

  58. The might of the Roman Empire was against them.

  59. Now this is important.

  60. By the time the book of Revelation was written, the Roman Empire had been around for 600 years.

  61. And it still had another 400 years to go.

  62. What that means is the Roman Empire lasted four times longer than the British Empire, the Communist Empire, and the American Empire combined.

  63. Four times longer.

  64. It is so embedded in terms of its power.

  65. The world has not seen anything like it.

  66. And when John writes this word that we have in front of us now, Christians were facing the might and the glory of that empire.

  67. Romans 1 verse 9.

    Romans 1:9

  68. Sorry, not Romans.

  69. Revelation 1 verse 9.

    Revelation 1:9

  70. The second half of it tells us that John was exiled on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

  71. Now these days, Patmos has around about 3,000 inhabitants.

  72. And it is full of five-star resorts and luxury villas.

  73. It's a great place to go for a holiday.

  74. In John's day, it was a prison island.

  75. It was a prison island for the Roman Empire.

  76. And John is an old man.

  77. And he is sentenced to work in the quarries, breaking stones on Patmos because of his faith in Jesus Christ.

  78. And John is, if you like, typical of the hardship that many Christians were facing and were about to face.

  79. Were about to face because of their emperor, Domitian.

  80. Now we all hear of the emperor Nero and the way that he sort of set himself against Christians.

  81. Domitian was, Nero was just sort of like a start.

  82. Start of the persecution.

  83. Domitian was a nasty piece of work compared to Nero.

  84. According to the Roman writer Suetonius, the Roman emperor Domitian, who was emperor when John wrote these words, was both physically unimpressive and a moral catastrophe of a man.

  85. Just to, I mean, I could give you a big long list.

  86. But here's a couple of things.

  87. He had many, many affairs with married women and eventually stole someone else's wife to be his own.

  88. His own brother Titus fell ill while on a campaign and he ordered his entire army to leave him alone to die.

  89. His own brother.

  90. He seduced his married niece, got her pregnant, and then she died from the abortion that he demanded that she have.

  91. This moral catastrophe of a man was physically unimpressive.

  92. He was particularly sensitive about his boldness.

  93. When what would be called nowadays a court joker made a joke, entertained the crowd, and made a bit of a passing shot at his boldness, Domitian had the guy executed straight away.

  94. He was particularly sensitive about his baldness, his growing pot belly, and what was described by historians as his spindly little legs.

  95. But he demanded that the entire Roman Empire referred to him as Lord God.

  96. And Christians were suffering extreme hardship because they refused to have this Roman emperor as the dominant reality of their lives, as the point of their lives.

  97. And so he threw the full force of the Roman Empire against them.

  98. His persecution was horrendous.

  99. He would have Christians laid out on the ground, have a horse attached to each arm and leg, and get the horses whipped so the horses would bolt and limbs would be ripped from torso.

  100. And then the crowds would watch the person die in agony.

  101. Some others, he would have them holes drilled into their skulls and molten lead poured in on their brains and watch them die that way.

  102. Others were mercifully thrown to the lions and torn apart.

  103. It was quicker.

  104. This is what these Christians are facing.

  105. And yet, they faced it with fortitude, with peace, and even joy.

  106. How did they do that?

  107. Because it is a historical fact they did.

  108. It's a historical fact that lives throughout the whole Roman Empire were changed when Christians died this way with fortitude, peace, and joy.

  109. And others wanted to know, how is it that you can live and die like that?

  110. How is that possible?

  111. Historical fact.

  112. This, in fact, was written about Christians not long after Domitian's reign, but it was about Domitian's reign.

  113. This is a Roman writer.

  114. They loved everyone.

  115. They loved everyone, but by everyone they are persecuted.

  116. They are unknown, and yet they are condemned.

  117. They are put to death, and yet they are brought to life.

  118. They are poor, and yet they make many rich.

  119. They're in need of everything, and yet they are bound in everything.

  120. They are dishonored, and yet they are glorified in their dishonor.

  121. They are slandered, and yet they are vindicated.

  122. They are cursed, and yet they bless.

  123. They're insulted, and yet they offer respect.

  124. And when they do good, they are punished as evildoers.

  125. When they are punished, they rejoice as if they are somehow brought to life.

  126. And so Christians, when punished, daily increase more and more.

  127. That is, the might of the greatest empire in the world could not stop them.

  128. So how did they do that?

  129. How did they live and die like that?

  130. Well, it's because they were captivated by the cosmic king.

  131. Revelation 1 was so important for them, and it's important for us.

  132. It reminds these suffering Christians who is, in fact, the dominant reality of their life,

  133. the cosmic king, Jesus Christ.

  134. Have a look at how he is described here.

  135. Verse 4.

  136. Him who was and who is to come.

  137. Verse 5.

  138. Jesus Christ, the firstborn from the dead and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

  139. Verse 6.

  140. The one to whom power and glory belong forever.

  141. And then we have in verse 8.

  142. I am.

  143. This is Jesus' declaration.

  144. I am the alpha and the omega who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty.

  145. Verse 8 there is one of the most comprehensive statements in the entire Bible of the divinity of Jesus,

  146. of exactly who he is.

  147. During his ministry years, he consistently made these sorts of claims, claiming that he, in fact, was God himself.

  148. It's claims that no other religious leader has ever claimed.

  149. You know, Buddha, Muhammad, others have claimed to speak on behalf of the divine.

  150. None of them dared to take the step of actually declaring that they were, in fact, the divine, that they were, in fact, the God, the almighty, the creator.

  151. Now, I don't have time this morning to unpack all of that.

  152. In fact, I do have time, but you don't have time for me to unpack all of that for us today.

  153. Other times we do, and we will again into the future.

  154. But I want you to know that this church here at St. Paul's, if you're watching me online, this church here at St. Paul's exists,

  155. that you might grapple with that claim of who Jesus is.

  156. It is so, so essential for you to understand who Jesus is.

  157. And we would be delighted.

  158. In fact, our missions team, I'd be delighted.

  159. Our missions team would be delighted to lead you through exploring this claim and the many other claims of Jesus Christ and the Christian faith.

  160. We want you to know him.

  161. And so please send us an email.

  162. Get in contact with us.

  163. Our missions team, Adrian, would be very glad to pursue that with you.

  164. But Jesus describes himself here as the Alpha and the Omega.

  165. That is, that's the first letter and the last letter of the Greek alphabet.

  166. He is, as we see a little bit later in chapter 1, he describes the beginning and the end.

  167. He's the first and the last.

  168. The Bible tells us that he existed before the universe was formed and he is its creator.

  169. He is, if you like, the starting point of all that is.

  170. He is the origin of all that is.

  171. As the beginning of the Bible tells us in Genesis chapter 1, in the beginning was God.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  172. When all things started, God was already there.

  173. Now, every single one of us has a starting point.

  174. I don't mean, you know, your birthday.

  175. I'm not referring to that.

  176. I mean your starting point.

  177. The starting point of life, of how life came to be.

  178. How we exist.

  179. The starting point of existence and how we derive our life and our meaning and our purpose from that starting point.

  180. It's the beginning point from which we explain the world as it is.

  181. What's your starting point?

  182. We've all got one.

  183. What is your starting point?

  184. Whatever your starting point is, it will fundamentally determine how you live.

  185. And especially it will determine how you handle tough times in life.

  186. Secularism declares there is no divine starting point.

  187. It declares that everything that exists now started because of a random act, random collision of atoms and stuff and gas.

  188. And so therefore, all life as it exists right now is an accident that happened billions of years ago.

  189. And life, existence, is therefore a collection of events and chaos.

  190. It's the only explanation of life that they have.

  191. There is no meaning.

  192. There is no purpose.

  193. If you want to be a true secularist.

  194. And it means therefore that we are left to our own devices to determine our own path, our own meaning, our own purpose.

  195. Everything is subject to the elements in which we exist.

  196. We cannot plan on a future whatsoever.

  197. And therefore, we live, we breathe, we die, we're gone, and that's it.

  198. So you better make the most of it right now.

  199. And so in Western society, personal happiness is the highest goal of life.

  200. Because there's nothing else.

  201. I might as well enjoy while the earth spins and I stand on it.

  202. And so there is therefore no explanation for hard times.

  203. There's no way to endure hard times.

  204. Because it's not the purpose of life.

  205. If, however, there is a creator at the beginning, then it's essential that we discover his truth, his purpose, his meaning.

  206. And we are told here that Jesus Christ is the starting point.

  207. He's the starting point.

  208. We're also told here that he is the end point.

  209. He is the omega as well.

  210. He created the universe.

  211. And the universe is orientated towards him as the starting point and the end point.

  212. He has built everything for him and around him.

  213. All things are for his glory.

  214. All things are for his knowledge.

  215. All things are for his service.

  216. We are built for him.

  217. And as long as we connect our life, our existence, our understanding with him, there is hope.

  218. He didn't just start history, but all of history is rushing towards him.

  219. So what we think our starting point and our end point are will determine how we live now.

  220. And Christianity declares that if Jesus Christ is your starting point and he is your end point,

  221. and an end point that I must add never actually ends, it goes on living with him forever,

  222. then he is your point now.

  223. He is the point.

  224. And the good news here is that the source of all our hope and life and meaning and purpose

  225. is not just a cosmic king who rules, but he's a cosmic king who rules and is present.

  226. He's close.

  227. He's not a distant divine being.

  228. This cosmic king is close.

  229. He's approachable.

  230. And this is good news for the imprisoned John, for the persecution Christians in the Roman Empire,

  231. and for Christians around this world in a thousand hard places right now.

  232. It's good news for the suffering, for those who are tired, for those who are weary,

  233. for those who are running out of steam, for those who are confused, disheartened,

  234. for those who are disenfranchised, for those who are insecure.

  235. We need to see Jesus Christ, the risen, ascended, cosmic king, as ruling and present.

  236. So, in verse 12, John turns to see whose voice it was that sounded like a trumpet in verse 10.

  237. Verse 20 tells us the interpretation of what he saw in that moment.

  238. And that is, what he saw was the cosmic king standing in amongst the churches, standing right in the churches.

  239. He's not just merely as a king over the churches.

  240. He's not distant away from it.

  241. He's not standing outside the churches.

  242. He is right there in the middle of his church.

  243. Now, I'll unpack this probably next week.

  244. But the idea of seven churches, he's not just a promise here for seven churches.

  245. The number seven in the book of Revelation is complete.

  246. So, the idea here is that he is amongst his church, his global worldwide church.

  247. And John saw, according to verse 13, one like a son of man.

  248. In Daniel chapter 7, it's a reference to Daniel chapter 7, verses 13 to 14.

Daniel 7 chapter mention Daniel 7:13–14

  249. The term son of man or one like a son of man refers to a great ruler.

  250. So, when John says that he saw one like a son of man standing in the middle of the lampstands,

  251. he means he saw someone with dominion and glory and kingly power.

  252. The one who stands amongst the churches is the one who received from the ancient of days

  253. a reference to God himself, dominion and glory and kingdom rule and power and authority in heaven and on earth.

  254. That is, all of God's divine rule has been given to this one like the son of man.

  255. And in verse 13, we also see this son of man was dressed in a robe,

  256. reaching down to his feet and with a gold sash around his chest.

  257. Now, the robe here is similar to the robe in the Old Testament,

  258. where it is almost always refers to the robe of the high priest.

  259. So, Jesus is not just the son of man as the cosmic king.

  260. He's not just the son of man from Daniel 7,

  261. who receives everlasting dominion and rule over all nations and time and eternity.

  262. We also see that he is the final high priest who brings all of the work of the temple to an end.

  263. He is the almighty cosmic king who mediates between humanity and God.

  264. And he does that, as we see in verse 5,

  265. by giving his own blood.

  266. He gave his own blood once and for all to put away sin once and for all,

  267. the sacrifice of himself.

  268. This is a king who gives of himself.

  269. These early Christians willingly put their lives on the line

  270. and some of them died horrible deaths

  271. because Jesus, the cosmic king, gave his life for them.

  272. And verse 5 says,

  273. To him who loves us.

  274. He loves them.

  275. In fact, in the original language, it is in the present tense.

  276. He loves them now.

  277. He loves you now.

  278. In the present, right here, right now.

  279. They are so blessed because this cosmic king,

  280. in complete comparison to Domitian,

  281. gave his own life for them.

  282. And he has freed us from our sins by his blood.

  283. Verse 5.

  284. Those who sin, those who live life as if they are their own little Domitians,

  285. set themselves up as the cosmic kings,

  286. making everything, making them the point of all of life.

  287. The Bible declares deserve to die eternally.

  288. But Jesus steps in as the high priest,

  289. the cosmic high priest who dies on the altar for our sin.

  290. He cancels our obligation to pay the penalty for our sins against God

  291. so that we might be reconciled with God and live with him forever.

  292. See, the blood of Jesus frees people from lust and greed and pride and anger

  293. and every other enslaving sin that makes us, me, you, the point of life.

  294. The blood of Jesus breaks the power of canceled sin.

  295. He is the loving, sacrificial, cosmic king.

  296. And in verse 14,

  297. John describes his eyes were like blazing fire.

  298. You see, the eyes of this son of man, this cosmic king,

  299. are not the clouded eye of fading glory.

  300. It's not like this Jesus is from another world,

  301. from times past.

  302. He's not on the wrong side of history.

  303. His eyes are the eyes of sharpest clarity and purification.

  304. They miss nothing that happens in his universe from time and eternity.

  305. They're exploding with energy.

  306. We all know, I'm assuming you know,

  307. but I just declare you all know,

  308. the dripping eye that's about to sleep,

  309. you know, about to drive off to sleep,

  310. and the resentful eye and the grumpy eye

  311. and the half-shut scowl and the bad mood eye.

  312. You can look in someone's eye and you know when you've ticked them off.

  313. We all know what it is.

  314. But we also know the eye that is alive with wonder and excitement

  315. and hope and expectancy and energy

  316. and Jesus' eyes were like a flaming fire.

  317. Know today,

  318. 2,000 years after John saw this vision,

  319. that Jesus is God,

  320. he is on the throne,

  321. he is as alive then as he is today.

  322. He is the cosmic king,

  323. he's not tired,

  324. he's not burnt out,

  325. he's not fatigued,

  326. he's not scrambling for answers.

  327. His eyes are aflame

  328. with the flashing fire of inexhaustible energy

  329. and hope and love.

  330. He sees everything that will be

  331. and has been.

  332. Nothing takes him by surprise,

  333. nothing can make him love you less

  334. or love you more.

  335. When Jesus thinks about his plans for you,

  336. when he thinks about his plans for this church

  337. and for this country

  338. and for Christians all across the globe,

  339. beyond this day,

  340. he's not hesitant,

  341. he's not tired,

  342. he's not bored,

  343. he's not scrambling for answers.

  344. His eyes are aflame of fire

  345. with utter exhilaration

  346. and passion and enthusiasm

  347. for the work that he began

  348. 2,000 years ago on the cross

  349. and will bring to completion

  350. when he comes with the clouds,

  351. as we are told here in Revelation 1.

  352. It will go ahead,

  353. nothing will hinder it

  354. and it excites him.

  355. Let me tell you,

  356. this year I have been tired

  357. because I don't know the future.

  358. constantly making decisions

  359. and changing and shifting

  360. and when I think about

  361. what St. Paul's needs to do next,

  362. I get tired thinking about it.

  363. Not Jesus.

  364. Not Jesus.

  365. Now friends,

  366. if you haven't quite grappled with it yet,

  367. this is a worldview-shaping passage.

  368. Worldview-shaping passages.

  369. Now there are two ways

  370. to approach God.

  371. Really only two ways

  372. you can approach God.

  373. Either he is

  374. the means to your end

  375. or he's the end

  376. and everything else

  377. is the means.

  378. And religion

  379. is one way

  380. to approach God

  381. as the means

  382. to your end.

  383. religion is doing

  384. certain things

  385. in order

  386. for God

  387. to do

  388. certain things

  389. for you.

  390. I loved watching

  391. Flora's video

  392. this morning

  393. and seeing

  394. the work of God

  395. in her life

  396. and the transformation

  397. of needing

  398. to be a good student

  399. to someone

  400. who now rests

  401. in the sovereign grace

  402. of this Lord Jesus Christ.

  403. Love to see that.

  404. In the past

  405. I've described

  406. religion

  407. as treating God

  408. like a cosmic

  409. vending machine.

  410. You put in

  411. your offerings

  412. your sacrifices

  413. in the hope

  414. that God

  415. will spit out

  416. what it is

  417. that you truly value.

  418. What is

  419. your true point

  420. in life?

  421. So in other words

  422. you use him

  423. to get to your point

  424. and inevitably

  425. the point

  426. has something

  427. to do with us

  428. gaining our glory

  429. for ourselves

  430. in some way.

  431. In one way

  432. or another

  433. it becomes

  434. about us

  435. being little

  436. Domitians.

  437. The other way

  438. to approach God

  439. is to see

  440. that it's all

  441. about him

  442. that he is

  443. in fact

  444. the cosmic king

  445. and we discover

  446. our point

  447. we discover

  448. our joy

  449. we discover

  450. our freedom

  451. when we pursue

  452. him

  453. surrender

  454. to him

  455. and so my last

  456. call here

  457. is for us

  458. to worship

  459. to know

  460. and to serve

  461. the cosmic king.

  462. Our cosmic king

  463. is not just a ruler

  464. he's a loving

  465. relational ruler

  466. as I've said

  467. and when John

  468. gets this vision

  469. of Jesus

  470. here

  471. what we see

  472. is he falls

  473. to the ground

  474. as though

  475. he is dead.

  476. That is

  477. what we see here

  478. is

  479. it's a position

  480. of submission

  481. it's a position

  482. of worship

  483. Jesus Christ

  484. is

  485. to be

  486. worshipped

  487. he's not

  488. the means

  489. to your end

  490. he is

  491. the end

  492. he is

  493. the omega

  494. he's

  495. the starting

  496. point of your

  497. life

  498. he's

  499. the point

  500. of your

  501. life

  502. every human

  503. being

  504. has the

  505. choice

  506. of either

  507. living life

  508. as little

  509. Domitians

  510. or surrendering

  511. to the true

  512. cosmic king

  513. secondly

  514. Jesus

  515. wants you

  516. to know

  517. him

  518. I think

  519. this is

  520. really important

  521. for everyone

  522. and I want

  523. to say

  524. particularly

  525. for those

  526. of you

  527. who are

  528. Christians

  529. and really

  530. struggling

  531. with it

  532. right now

  533. this year

  534. has just

  535. put you

  536. on tender

  537. hooks

  538. and you're

  539. really struggling

  540. to follow

  541. him

  542. what happens

  543. here is

  544. God gives

  545. John

  546. on the

  547. island

  548. of Patmos

  549. a revelation

  550. and this

  551. revelation

  552. is not

  553. just for

  554. John

  555. this word

  556. is not

  557. just for

  558. John

  559. we are

  560. told

  561. in verse

  562. 11

  563. write on

  564. a scroll

  565. what you

  566. see

  567. and send

  568. it to the

  569. seven

  570. churches

  571. see the

  572. point of

  573. John

  574. writing it

  575. down

  576. is to

  577. transmit

  578. to the

  579. seven

  580. churches

  581. and ultimately

  582. to us

  583. the experience

  584. that John

  585. had

  586. of seeing

  587. Jesus

  588. that's the

  589. point

  590. now can you

  591. imagine John

  592. sitting on the

  593. island of

  594. Patmos

  595. suffering

  596. breaking rocks

  597. in the

  598. quarry as an

  599. old bloke

  600. every bit of

  601. him hurting

  602. and he gets

  603. his vision

  604. of the

  605. cosmic

  606. reigning

  607. Jesus

  608. how much

  609. his soul

  610. must have

  611. lifted at

  612. that point

  613. and John

  614. wants us

  615. to see

  616. what he

  617. sees

  618. he appears

  619. to John

  620. and says

  621. write in a

  622. book

  623. what you

  624. see

  625. and send

  626. it to the

  627. seven

  628. churches

  629. John

  630. gets the

  631. vision

  632. we get

  633. the

  634. book

  635. that's

  636. the

  637. point

  638. he

  639. wants

  640. us

  641. this

  642. cosmic

  643. king

  644. wants

  645. us

  646. to

  647. come

  648. to

  649. him

  650. through

  651. his

  652. word

  653. to

  654. us

  655. he

  656. wants

  657. us

  658. to

  659. seek

  660. him

  661. in

  662. his

  663. word

  664. he

  665. wants

  666. to

  667. know

  668. him

  669. by

  670. his

  671. word

  672. he

  673. wants

  674. us

  675. to

  676. gaze

  677. on

  678. him

  679. and

  680. all

  681. of

  682. his

  683. majesty

  684. in

  685. his

  686. word

  687. to

  688. steadily

  689. gaze

  690. until

  691. the

  692. point

  693. that our

  694. hearts

  695. are

  696. lifted

  697. and we

  698. feel

  699. deeply

  700. encouraged

  701. he wants

  702. us to

  703. know how

  704. blessed we

  705. are to

  706. call this

  707. cosmic king

  708. our friend

  709. our lord

  710. so I

  711. want to

  712. ask you

  713. what

  714. would

  715. it

  716. look

  717. like

  718. for

  719. this

  720. Jesus

  721. to

  722. become

  723. the

  724. point

  725. of

  726. your

  727. life

  728. the

  729. dominant

  730. reality

  731. in

  732. your

  733. life

  734. what

  735. would

  736. it

  737. look

  738. like

  739. for

  740. the

  741. things

  742. of

  743. the

  744. bible

  745. his

  746. word

  747. to

  748. us

  749. where

  750. we

  751. get

  752. to

  753. gaze

  754. on

  755. him

  756. constantly

  757. where

  758. we

  759. find

  760. out

  761. the

  762. way

  763. things

  764. truly

  765. are

  766. to

  767. have

  768. his

  769. world

  770. view

  771. as

  772. the

  773. creator

  774. and

  775. the

  776. purpose

  777. of

  778. all

  779. life

  780. and

  781. existence

  782. what

  783. would

  784. it

  785. look

  786. like

  787. to

  788. have

  789. the

  790. things

  791. of

  792. the

  793. bible

  794. to

  795. be

  796. more

  797. real

  798. for

  799. you

  800. than

  801. the

  802. news

  803. media

  804. than

  805. what

  806. you

  807. watch

  808. on

  809. television

  810. than

  811. for

  812. the

  813. internet

  814. and

  815. social

  816. media

  817. what

  818. would

  819. it

  820. look

  821. like

  822. for

  823. his

  824. narrative

  825. to

  826. dominate

  827. your

  828. life

  829. more

  830. so

  831. than

  832. academics

  833. from

  834. universities

  835. and their

  836. opinion

  837. on

  838. world

  839. view

  840. what

  841. would

  842. it

  843. look

  844. like

  845. for

  846. the

  847. scriptures

  848. for

  849. God's

  850. word

  851. to

  852. you

  853. to

  854. dominate

  855. your

  856. world

  857. view

  858. and

  859. to

  860. be

  861. the

  862. point

  863. of

  864. interpretation

  865. of

  866. all

  867. things

  868. I

  869. want

  870. to

  871. ask

  872. you

  873. as

  874. I've

  875. already

  876. done

  877. are

  878. you

  879. losing

  880. heart

  881. are

  882. you

  883. weak

  884. because

  885. you

  886. aren't

  887. commuting

  888. with

  889. is it

  890. because

  891. you're

  892. not

  893. commuting

  894. with

  895. him

  896. in

  897. his

  898. word

  899. in

  900. this

  901. season

  902. this

  903. year

  904. which

  905. world

  906. view

  907. which

  908. narrative

  909. grand

  910. narrative

  911. has

  912. dominated

  913. your

  914. daily

  915. existence

  916. I want

  917. to speak

  918. to you

  919. particularly

  920. if you're

  921. at home

  922. watching

  923. from

  924. this

  925. I'm

  926. not

  927. speaking

  928. to you

  929. if

  930. you've

  931. got a

  932. particular

  933. medical

  934. issue

  935. I want

  936. to

  937. specifically

  938. point

  939. out

  940. those

  941. who

  942. just

  943. finding

  944. right

  945. now

  946. it's

  947. just

  948. a

  949. whole

  950. lot

  951. easier

  952. to

  953. do

  954. church

  955. at

  956. home

  957. just

  958. don't

  959. want

  960. to

  961. do

  962. that

  963. battle

  964. anymore

  965. it's

  966. much

  967. more

  968. comfortable

  969. convenient

  970. to sit

  971. on the

  972. lounge

  973. with a

  974. cup of

  975. coffee

  976. in my

  977. pajamas

  978. and do

  979. church

  980. which

  981. world

  982. view

  983. is

  984. dominating

  985. your

  986. reality

  987. right

  988. now

  989. who

  990. is

  991. the

  992. king

  993. over

  994. your

  995. life

  996. right

  997. now

  998. thirdly

  999. as the

  1000. cosmic

  1001. king

  1002. Jesus

  1003. Christ

  1004. also

  1005. wants

  1006. us

  1007. to

  1008. serve

  1009. him

  1010. whatever

  1011. dominates

  1012. your

  1013. life

  1014. whatever

  1015. is

  1016. your

  1017. starting

  1018. point

  1019. your

  1020. end

  1021. point

  1022. whatever

  1023. is

  1024. your

  1025. point

  1026. whatever

  1027. it

  1028. is

  1029. that

  1030. you're

  1031. putting

  1032. your

  1033. offerings

  1034. in

  1035. the

  1036. cosmic

  1037. vending

  1038. machine

  1039. whatever

  1040. it is

  1041. that

  1042. you're

  1043. grabbing

  1044. at the

  1045. bottom

  1046. as

  1047. your

  1048. point

  1049. whatever

  1050. it

  1051. is

  1052. it

  1053. will

  1054. require

  1055. you

  1056. to

  1057. sacrifice

  1058. everything

  1059. for

  1060. it

  1061. Jesus

  1062. is

  1063. no

  1064. different

  1065. but

  1066. he's

  1067. the

  1068. only

  1069. king

  1070. the

  1071. only

  1072. point

  1073. who

  1074. has

  1075. first

  1076. served

  1077. us

  1078. and

  1079. given

  1080. everything

  1081. to

  1082. us

  1083. and

  1084. so

  1085. our

  1086. service

  1087. of

  1088. him

  1089. is

  1090. always

  1091. freedom

  1092. in

  1093. verse

  1094. 6

  1095. we

  1096. read

  1097. Jesus

  1098. has

  1099. freed

  1100. us

  1101. from

  1102. our

  1103. sin

  1104. and

  1105. made

  1106. us

  1107. a

  1108. kingdom

  1109. and

  1110. priests

  1111. to

  1112. serve

  1113. his

  1114. God

  1115. and

  1116. father

  1117. that

  1118. verse

  1119. is

  1120. an

  1121. allusion

  1122. to

  1123. the

  1124. moment

  1125. when

  1126. God's

  1127. people

  1128. were

  1129. gathered

  1130. at

  1131. Mount

  1132. Sinai

  1133. to

  1134. meet

  1135. with

  1136. God

  1137. to

  1138. hear

  1139. his

  1140. law

  1141. to

  1142. receive

  1143. it

  1144. and

  1145. to

  1146. enter

  1147. into

  1148. covenant

  1149. relationship

  1150. with

  1151. him

  1152. and

  1153. God

  1154. reminded

  1155. them

  1156. in

  1157. that

  1158. moment

  1159. that

  1160. he

  1161. had

  1162. freed

  1163. them

  1164. from

  1165. slavery

  1166. in

  1167. the

  1168. same

  1169. way

  1170. we

  1171. are

  1172. reminded

  1173. here

  1174. that

  1175. we

  1176. are

  1177. freed

  1178. from

  1179. sin

  1180. and

  1181. then

  1182. in

  1183. Exodus

  1184. 19

  1185. he

  1186. describes

  1187. his

  1188. people

  1189. as

  1190. a

  1191. kingdom

  1192. of

  1193. priests

  1194. that

  1195. is

  1196. Israel's

  1197. role

  1198. as

  1199. he

  1200. saved

  1201. rescued

  1202. people

  1203. was

  1204. to

  1205. make

  1206. God

  1207. known

  1208. to

  1209. the

  1210. world

  1211. and

  1212. to

  1213. bring

  1214. the

  1215. world

  1216. to

  1217. the

  1218. sacrifices

  1219. that

  1220. would

  1221. free

  1222. them

  1223. from

  1224. their

  1225. sin

  1226. through

  1227. blood

  1228. Israel's

  1229. life

  1230. together

  1231. was

  1232. to

  1233. display

  1234. the

  1235. glory

  1236. and

  1237. the

  1238. goodness

  1239. of

  1240. God's

  1241. reign

  1242. over

  1243. their

  1244. life

  1245. if

  1246. you're

  1247. a

  1248. Christian

  1249. you

  1250. belong

  1251. to

  1252. Jesus

  1253. we

  1254. are

  1255. his

  1256. people

  1257. as

  1258. the

  1259. church

  1260. and

  1261. our

  1262. allegiance

  1263. is

  1264. to

  1265. him

  1266. our

  1267. life

  1268. together

  1269. is

  1270. to

  1271. attract

  1272. people

  1273. to

  1274. him

  1275. we

  1276. are

  1277. to

  1278. bring

  1279. people

  1280. to

  1281. the

  1282. sacrifice

  1283. the

  1284. only

  1285. sacrifice

  1286. that

  1287. frees

  1288. us

  1289. from

  1290. our

  1291. biggest

  1292. problem

  1293. sin

  1294. we

  1295. are

  1296. to

  1297. bring

  1298. people

  1299. to

  1300. Jesus

  1301. death

  1302. on

  1303. the

  1304. cross

  1305. for

  1306. them

  1307. proclaiming

  1308. the

  1309. good

  1310. news

  1311. of

  1312. the

  1313. benevolent

  1314. cosmic

  1315. king

  1316. who

  1317. offers

  1318. us

  1319. life

  1320. forever

  1321. with

  1322. him

  1323. is

  1324. central

  1325. to

  1326. the

  1327. mission

  1328. of

  1329. this

  1330. church

  1331. and

  1332. as

  1333. just

  1334. not

  1335. just

  1336. in

  1337. the

  1338. past

  1339. but

  1340. as

  1341. we

  1342. move

  1343. forward

  1344. into

  1345. the

  1346. future

  1347. we

  1348. are

  1349. in

  1350. the

  1351. service

  1352. of

  1353. the

  1354. cosmic

  1355. king

  1356. and

  1357. therefore

  1358. that

  1359. proclamation

  1360. of that

  1361. good

  1362. news

  1363. is

  1364. central

  1365. to

  1366. your

  1367. identity

  1368. as

  1369. one

  1370. of

  1371. his

  1372. children

  1373. we

  1374. are

  1375. to

  1376. herald

  1377. his

  1378. return

  1379. and

  1380. his

  1381. priestly

  1382. service

  1383. by

  1384. making

  1385. by

  1386. that

  1387. that's

  1388. not

  1389. easy

  1390. in

  1391. our

  1392. generation

  1393. it

  1394. seems

  1395. to

  1396. be

  1397. getting

  1398. harder

  1399. we

  1400. face

  1401. misunderstanding

  1402. apathy

  1403. even

  1404. hostility

  1405. Christians

  1406. are

  1407. regarded

  1408. as

  1409. people

  1410. from

  1411. another

  1412. era

  1413. wrong

  1414. side

  1415. of

  1416. history

  1417. and

  1418. yet

  1419. we

  1420. serve

  1421. the

  1422. cosmic

  1423. king

  1424. who

  1425. has

  1426. all

  1427. of

  1428. history

  1429. in

  1430. his

  1431. hands

  1432. the

  1433. encouragement

  1434. here

  1435. is that

  1436. despite

  1437. the

  1438. difficulty

  1439. that

  1440. you're

  1441. facing

  1442. in

  1443. your

  1444. life

  1445. despite

  1446. progress

  1447. in

  1448. your

  1449. own

  1450. conquering

  1451. of

  1452. sin

  1453. and

  1454. dealing

  1455. with

  1456. sin

  1457. is

  1458. slow

  1459. despite

  1460. the

  1461. movement

  1462. against

  1463. the

  1464. gospel

  1465. and

  1466. the

  1467. church

  1468. Jesus

  1469. is

  1470. with

  1471. his

  1472. church

  1473. now

  1474. with

  1475. his

  1476. church

  1477. he is

  1478. with

  1479. us

  1480. he is

  1481. the

  1482. son of

  1483. man

  1484. who

  1485. reigns

  1486. with

  1487. dominion

  1488. over

  1489. all

  1490. that

  1491. is

  1492. he

  1493. reigns

  1494. over

  1495. secularism

  1496. he

  1497. reigns

  1498. over

  1499. Islam

  1500. he

  1501. reigns

  1502. over

  1503. communism

  1504. he

  1505. reigns

  1506. over

  1507. everything

  1508. every

  1509. individual

  1510. that sets

  1511. up

  1512. against

  1513. him

  1514. he's

  1515. the

  1516. one

  1517. with

  1518. power

  1519. over

  1520. all

  1521. that

  1522. is

  1523. both

  1524. seen

  1525. and

  1526. unseen

  1527. and

  1528. so

  1529. friends

  1530. I want

  1531. to

  1532. encourage

  1533. you

  1534. whatever

  1535. your

  1536. position

  1537. is

  1538. right

  1539. now

  1540. to

  1541. gaze

  1542. upon

  1543. Jesus

  1544. and let

  1545. his

  1546. royal

  1547. power

  1548. and his

  1549. priestly

  1550. forgiveness

  1551. and his

  1552. fiery

  1553. hope

  1554. his fiery

  1555. hope

  1556. fill you

  1557. with confidence

  1558. afresh

  1559. that

  1560. treasuring

  1561. Jesus

  1562. is never

  1563. ever

  1564. a vanity

  1565. I

  1566. got to

  1567. say

  1568. I

  1569. was

  1570. bursting

  1571. this

  1572. morning

  1573. both

  1574. the

  1575. early

  1576. service

  1577. and

  1578. this

  1579. one

  1580. as

  1581. we

  1582. sang

  1583. crown

  1584. him

  1585. with

  1586. many

  1587. crowns

  1588. I'm

  1589. so

  1590. grateful

  1591. for

  1592. our

  1593. teams

  1594. our

  1595. corporate

  1596. worship

  1597. team

  1598. here

  1599. and what

  1600. they do

  1601. in working

  1602. to just

  1603. lift our

  1604. hearts

  1605. to Jesus

  1606. they

  1607. certainly

  1608. did it

  1609. for me

  1610. this

  1611. morning

  1612. even

  1613. though

  1614. I

  1615. couldn't

  1616. sing

  1617. I

  1618. was

  1619. bursting

  1620. so

  1621. all

  1622. that

  1623. could

  1624. happen

  1625. was

  1626. I

  1627. burst it

  1628. out of

  1629. my

  1630. eyes

  1631. instead

  1632. if it

  1633. wasn't

  1634. coming

  1635. out

  1636. of

  1637. my

  1638. mouth

  1639. but

  1640. those

  1641. words

  1642. all

  1643. hail

  1644. redeemer

  1645. hail

  1646. for

  1647. you

  1648. have

  1649. died

  1650. for

  1651. me

  1652. your

  1653. praise

  1654. and

  1655. glory

  1656. will

  1657. never

  1658. fail

  1659. for

  1660. all

  1661. eternity

  1662. let

  1663. every

  1664. throne

  1665. before

  1666. him

  1667. fall

  1668. come

  1669. to the

  1670. cosmic

  1671. king

  1672. and

  1673. worship

  1674. and

  1675. serve

  1676. and

  1677. love

  1678. him
