  1. This Wednesday, just gone, we celebrated and remembered Remembrance Day.

  2. We spent time remembering that there was thousands of young men who saw the evil carried out in the name of conquest and signed up.

  3. Signed up to go to war and to give their bodies and lives to see people and nations saved.

  4. In 2017, a young man by the name of Emmanuel Mensah repeatedly ran into a burning building to save people's lives before ultimately losing his own life.

  5. In 1665, when the bubonic plague was spreading across the world, one town chose suffering to see lives saved.

  6. The town is called Iam, I think that's how you pronounce it, E-Y-A-M in England, a town of about 800 people.

  7. They chose to quarantine themselves off from the important trade routes around them when the plague came.

  8. And so over 14 months, they lost 260 of 800 of their residents.

  9. But their self-sacrifice resulted in victory.

  10. Nobody outside the village contracted the disease.

  11. They doomed themselves to pestilential death to save the surrounding country.

  12. Victory came through suffering.

  13. And there is a pattern here that extends throughout life and life beyond death.

  14. Victory comes when I put to death my own pride and arrogance.

  15. When I choose to love other people.

  16. I win as a friend when I'm really busy.

  17. But I choose to give up my time to help someone else.

  18. I win as a dad when I put to death my annoyance with my kids.

  19. And choose to sit and engage with them.

  20. Today, as we continue to look through the book of Revelation,

  21. John sees a vision of the future of the church.

  22. A future of victory through suffering.

  23. The same victory that Jesus won in his sacrificial death and resurrection,

  24. the church would also be part of.

  25. And a challenge for us today would be to see that that is the ultimate victory.

  26. Victory through suffering.

  27. And then continue to put to death the things that hold us back.

  28. Our personal preferences, our pride and our sin.

  29. And to have life in Christ.

  30. Because that is the victorious Christian life.

  31. We're looking at a really strange and detailed part of Revelation.

  32. All of it's fairly detailed and, you know, it's got some strange things going on.

  33. But today we're going to work our way slowly through Revelation 11,

  34. looking at the various images to understand what this meant in its context

  35. and what it means for us as well.

  36. We're going to see three things as we go through this this morning.

  37. We're going to see that God has protected his church.

  38. He's protected his church because the church is also persecuted.

  39. But God will ultimately vindicate them.

  40. I couldn't think of a third P.

  41. So it's God protects his church because it's persecuted.

  42. And then finally the church is vindicated.

  43. So let me pray for us as we get into Revelation 11.

  44. Heavenly Father, I thank you for your word to us today.

  45. I thank you that we can read your word without fear of persecution in this country.

  46. But Lord, as we look through the detail, help it not bog us down,

  47. but to see the amazing victory that you have for us through the suffering of Christ

  48. and how we too can have life because of Jesus.

  49. Amen.

  50. Please have your Bibles open.

  51. It's wonderful to see some people with their Bibles open on their laps,

  52. on your phone.

  53. Make sure it's the app and the Bible.

  54. If you get distracted, you know, turn your notifications off.

  55. We're in Revelation chapter 11 and we'll start in verse 1

    Revelation 11 chapter mention

  56. where we see John is shown a vision of the temple.

  57. Have a look with me.

  58. I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told,

  59. go and measure the temple of God and the altar with its worshippers.

  60. But exclude the outer court.

  61. Do not measure it because it is being given to the Gentiles.

  62. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months.

  63. In the Old Testament, the temple is the place where God met with his people.

  64. It was where sacrifices were made.

  65. It was where the high priest went once a year to make sacrifice

  66. and it was built to the exact measurements that God said.

  67. But the image here is not of the Old Testament temple.

  68. Rather, it is of the church.

  69. 1 Corinthians chapter 3 tells us that now,

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  70. after Jesus' death and resurrection,

  71. the church is the temple.

  72. It is not the building.

  73. We are the people of God.

  74. This building is wonderful that it allows us to meet,

  75. but God has made us his temple.

  76. We are the place where God meets.

  77. He sends his spirit and he dwells in us.

  78. The outer court is left to be trampled by the Gentiles.

  79. Now, again, with this language of Gentiles,

  80. we know that God has broken down the wall of hostility

  81. between God's people, the Jews,

  82. and has now brought the Gentiles in.

  83. We are united together as a church.

  84. That is the amazing news of the gospel,

  85. that those, the Gentiles, me,

  86. those who are far away from God, his enemy,

  87. have now been brought into his family.

  88. But the outer court here is a picture of those who are God's enemies now.

  89. Those kingdoms, those armies arrayed against God,

  90. those who are against God.

  91. And they will attack God's people for 42 months.

  92. This points back to a prophecy from Daniel.

  93. Without getting too much into the specifics,

  94. 42 months is three and a half years.

  95. And in the book of Daniel,

  96. there's a prophecy that at the end of a time,

  97. times, and half a time, the end would come.

  98. So a time is a reference to a year.

  99. And so a year and two years and another half a year is 42 months.

  100. Now, this is pointing to the fact that there will be persecution

  101. come against the church from those who are against God,

  102. but it is for a season.

  103. It doesn't go on forever.

  104. This season is controlled by God.

  105. And whatever people do against God's people,

  106. God will protect them.

  107. Even though there is persecution,

  108. God will protect his people.

  109. And John sees God appoint two particular people to be witnesses.

  110. They're referred to also as lampstands.

  111. So John is describing the church who are going to be persecuted,

  112. and they have a job to witness to the world what God has done.

  113. He's described as two witnesses because in Deuteronomy,

  114. we see that in court,

  115. you need to have two witnesses to be reliable.

  116. So these two witnesses are a reliable witness to what God has done,

  117. and the church are lampstands to shine God's light into a chaotic and dark world.

  118. We are to witness to what God has done in history,

  119. through Jesus,

  120. and in our lives.

  121. And we've been seeing over the last five weeks what God has been doing in people's lives.

  122. It's been wonderful to see, even today,

  123. what God has been doing in people's lives,

  124. and to witness to what God has done.

  125. The church is to witness,

  126. to preach,

  127. to share what God has been doing for 1,260 days.

  128. That's the same reference as the 42 months.

  129. Clothed in sackcloth,

  130. as a sign of grieving,

  131. to call people to repent.

  132. This time will be over.

  133. Your time for repentance will be over.

  134. Repent now.

  135. Follow the Lord now.

  136. But this church also has been given great power to protect itself.

  137. There's this wonderful imagery.

  138. Verse 5.

  139. Have a look with me.

  140. If anyone tries to harm them,

  141. fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.

  142. This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.

  143. They have power to shut up the heavens,

  144. so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying.

  145. And they have power to turn the waters into blood,

  146. to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

  147. Power to cause plagues.

  148. Power to shut up the sky.

  149. These are pictures of Moses and Elijah,

  150. the two great heroes of the Old Testament.

  151. We are now engaged in a very different kind of ministry.

  152. I've never seen anybody have fire come from their mouth.

  153. But what this point is,

  154. it's saying that the work we are now involved in,

  155. being part of God's mission,

  156. is every part as powerful as the great heroes of old.

  157. They brought plagues.

  158. They brought locusts.

  159. They brought fire.

  160. They stopped rain.

  161. They turned rivers into blood.

  162. But with the preaching of the good news of Jesus,

  163. we bring either eternal life or eternal death.

  164. That's what I'm doing standing right here now,

  165. proclaiming the gospel,

  166. preaching the good news.

  167. That's what you do when you read the Bible with a friend.

  168. When you read it with your children,

  169. you are preaching and witnessing to what God has done

  170. to bring eternal life or eternal death.

  171. Seeing God's mighty power work through his word.

  172. God has sent us to be on about his mission

  173. with the very words of life.

  174. God is working to protect us now

  175. so that we can continue to be his witnesses.

  176. The vision given to John summarizes the glory of following God,

  177. that mighty and wonderful things happen,

  178. that people's lives are saved,

  179. but it also paints a picture of the pain of existence

  180. in this present evil world.

  181. For we are in this 42 months.

  182. We are still in this time between Jesus' resurrection and his return,

  183. the time that we have to witness,

  184. to continue to proclaim the good news.

  185. And this time we are protected by God

  186. because nothing can separate us from his love in Christ Jesus.

  187. And yet those who are in the family of God

  188. are protected because we need protected.

  189. Very much like a soldier goes into war wearing armor

  190. because of the need to be defended from attack,

  191. we need to be protected from attack too.

  192. Life in this tension is not easy,

  193. and yet God is with us,

  194. guarding us, guiding us,

  195. nourishing and strengthening us

  196. until the very end.

  197. We need protection because John is going to paint a picture

  198. of persecution coming for the church.

  199. Second point today, persecution.

  200. Have a look with me in verse 7.

  201. Now, when they had finished their testimony,

  202. the beast that comes up from the abyss

  203. will attack them and overpower and kill them.

  204. Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city,

  205. which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt,

  206. where also their Lord was crucified.

  207. The witnesses who were protected

  208. are now killed by a satanic power.

  209. It takes place in Sodom and Egypt

  210. and also where the Lord was crucified.

  211. And it says it's figuratively.

  212. So we get this picture that the church is suffering

  213. against those who have arrayed themselves against God.

  214. Historically, Sodom was against God.

  215. Egypt was against God's people

  216. and the place where Jesus was crucified

  217. was against God and his people.

  218. The world who is opposed to God

  219. wants to shame Christians.

  220. It was a picture of these two witnesses killed

  221. and then their bodies are left in the public square.

  222. They are left for days

  223. and they're not buried,

  224. which in the ancient world would have brought great shame

  225. to their families and those associated with them.

  226. The church is attacked,

  227. maligned,

  228. scorned,

  229. dishonored by those who oppose God.

  230. The very ones that we are called to witness to.

  231. Verse 9.

  232. For three and a half days,

  233. some from every people, tribe, language and nation

  234. will gaze on their bodies

  235. and refuse them burial.

  236. That phrase,

  237. every people, tribe, language and nation,

  238. we saw that in Revelation 7 last week

  239. when we saw that

  240. there would be a multitude of people

  241. from every tribe, nation and tongue

  242. praising God

  243. and now those people

  244. that Christians are called to witness to,

  245. to the whole world,

  246. some of those people

  247. are gazing on the bodies of those two who have died

  248. and refusing burial.

  249. They're giving themselves presents.

  250. They are just so ecstatic

  251. that these Christians have been killed.

  252. The church had been tormented

  253. because they had been tormenting others.

  254. This is what happens when you preach the good news

  255. to those who don't want to hear it.

  256. People don't find it easy to just say,

  257. oh, I'm not interested.

  258. The Christian gospel can actually also torment people.

  259. John the Baptist called Herod

  260. to not marry his brother's wife

  261. and he was beheaded.

  262. Jesus himself called the Jews

  263. not to have a legalistic,

  264. half-hearted devotion to God

  265. and they crucified him.

  266. He had the words of life.

  267. He was God

  268. and they did not like to hear those things.

  269. It tormented them

  270. and so they killed him.

  271. The world cannot bear

  272. to have its evil condemned.

  273. Have you ever seen a loved one

  274. making bad choices

  275. that won't end well?

  276. Do you risk criticizing

  277. what they're doing

  278. out of care and love?

  279. Even when that person

  280. doesn't want to hear it,

  281. it's much more comfortable

  282. not to say anything.

  283. But it is not comfortable

  284. losing that person's life.

  285. It is very comfortable

  286. to not share the gospel.

  287. To not share the gospel

  288. on the front lines

  289. with our friends,

  290. with our family.

  291. I see you making these choices

  292. and chasing after these things.

  293. You think these things

  294. will satisfy you

  295. but they won't.

  296. but I don't want to say anything.

  297. I see you chasing these things

  298. but only Jesus will satisfy

  299. and if I bring that up

  300. it will make for an awkward

  301. family dinner at Christmas.

  302. It is much more comfortable

  303. to not face the shame

  304. from sharing the gospel

  305. and being persecuted.

  306. Can you imagine

  307. being a Christian

  308. and seeing people

  309. do what happens in verse 10?

  310. The inhabitants of the earth

  311. will gloat over them

  312. and celebrate

  313. by sending gifts

  314. to each other

  315. because these two prophets

  316. had tormented

  317. those who live on the earth.

  318. It looks like a painful future

  319. to be a Christian.

  320. But God doesn't leave

  321. his people on the ground

  322. beaten and defeated.

  323. He vindicates them.

  324. Our third point today,

  325. vindication.

  326. Verse 11

  327. But after the three and a half days

  328. but after three and a half days

  329. the breath of life

  330. from God entered them

  331. and they stood up

  332. on their feet

  333. and terror

  334. struck those who saw them.

  335. Then they heard

  336. a loud voice from heaven

  337. saying to them

  338. come up here

  339. and they went up to heaven

  340. in a cloud

  341. while their enemies

  342. looked on.

  343. Those who had been

  344. struck down

  345. beaten,

  346. mocked,

  347. killed,

  348. shamed in front of everybody

  349. are brought to life

  350. and lifted up

  351. in front of everybody.

  352. God's spirit

  353. has brought them

  354. back to life.

  355. They have been vindicated

  356. in the public square

  357. shown

  358. to have been

  359. in the right

  360. to follow God

  361. and to proclaim

  362. his good news.

  363. Now,

  364. this is one of the passages

  365. in Revelation

  366. that has a lot of detail

  367. including specific

  368. time references

  369. that people can often

  370. see this

  371. as a literal

  372. linear timeline.

  373. There are going to be

  374. two witnesses who come

  375. and then it's going to go

  376. for 42 months

  377. and then people are going

  378. to be lifted up

  379. to heaven.

  380. Now,

  381. I don't believe

  382. that this is

  383. a literal timeline.

  384. It's a symbolic way

  385. for John to show

  386. that God has vindicated

  387. his people.

  388. God protects those

  389. who are persecuted

  390. and vindicates.

  391. He will vindicate.

  392. God has shown

  393. his people

  394. to be innocent.

  395. His people

  396. in public

  397. in plain view

  398. of those who rejoiced

  399. over his deaths.

  400. And the amazing thing

  401. is that in verse 13

  402. it says that the people

  403. who saw this

  404. gave glory

  405. to God.

  406. God sent

  407. an earthquake

  408. a sign of judgment.

  409. People died

  410. but people also

  411. gave glory

  412. to God.

  413. He saves people too.

  414. I believe that this

  415. is more of a pattern

  416. of history

  417. rather than

  418. an exact timeline

  419. for what will happen.

  420. The church

  421. is called

  422. to witness

  423. to the gospel.

  424. The church

  425. is persecuted,

  426. martyred,

  427. scorned,

  428. mocked

  429. and at times

  430. it seems like

  431. the church

  432. is done.

  433. The cause of Christ

  434. is defeated.

  435. God is dead

  436. they cry.

  437. Those who follow him,

  438. those Christians,

  439. well they're dying out.

  440. but God's spirit

  441. breathes life

  442. into them.

  443. Picking up imagery

  444. from Ezekiel 37

  445. where dry bones

  446. are revived

  447. and God makes

  448. an army.

  449. God is reviving

  450. his church

  451. to make us

  452. his victorious army.

  453. It happened

  454. to Jesus himself.

  455. He was persecuted,

  456. killed

  457. and yet raised

  458. from the dead.

  459. Stephen in Acts 7

  460. he is persecuted

  461. and killed

  462. but God also

  463. uses that moment

  464. to send

  465. his missionaries

  466. out into the world

  467. to witness

  468. to what God

  469. is doing.

  470. Soviet communism

  471. set out

  472. to crush

  473. the church

  474. but the church

  475. outlived it.

  476. In Ethiopia

  477. between 1975

  478. and 78

  479. President Mengistu

  480. implemented

  481. the Red Terror

  482. where 1.5

  483. million

  484. died

  485. and churches

  486. were closed.

  487. When Mengistu

  488. fell

  489. no one was sure

  490. what had happened

  491. to the Christians.

  492. Were they still there?

  493. They didn't know.

  494. But Christians

  495. had been meeting

  496. in homes

  497. and not only survived

  498. but had grown.

  499. In 1900

  500. the Boxer Rebellion

  501. in China

  502. saw over 200

  503. missionaries killed

  504. and over 30,000

  505. Chinese people killed

  506. and yet

  507. God breathed life

  508. to what seemed dead.

  509. The same thing

  510. happened again

  511. in China

  512. after the Cultural Revolution.

  513. In the face

  514. of hostile powers

  515. the story

  516. of Jesus

  517. repeats itself

  518. in the church.

  519. The church

  520. witnesses to God.

  521. There is persecution

  522. death

  523. and what looks like

  524. defeat

  525. but God

  526. breathes life

  527. and the church

  528. grows.

  529. Victory

  530. comes

  531. through suffering.

  532. Victory

  533. comes through suffering.

  534. It is

  535. God's chosen

  536. weapon

  537. against the forces

  538. of evil.

  539. Faithful people

  540. are sustained

  541. by the power

  542. of the Spirit

  543. of God.

  544. Victory

  545. came through suffering.

  546. Life

  547. comes

  548. through death.

  549. Last week

  550. my family

  551. watched the

  552. 1999

  553. classic Disney

  554. movie

  555. Hercules

  556. and I think

  557. the church

  558. is like

  559. a mythical beast

  560. that I saw

  561. in that movie.

  562. not the phoenix

  563. that rises

  564. from the ashes

  565. although that might

  566. be apt

  567. but I think

  568. the church

  569. is really

  570. like the

  571. ancient

  572. hydra.

  573. The hydra

  574. is a dragon

  575. like beast

  576. and what

  577. would happen

  578. is a head

  579. would be cut

  580. off

  581. and two more

  582. heads

  583. would grow

  584. back.

  585. You should

  586. go and watch

  587. this scene

  588. in the movie

  589. Hercules

  590. but I think

  591. this is an apt

  592. picture of the

  593. church.

  594. There is suffering

  595. and persecution

  596. but victory

  597. comes through

  598. suffering.

  599. The church

  600. grows

  601. because suffering

  602. and persecution

  603. is God's

  604. weapon against

  605. the world

  606. his tool

  607. to see

  608. the church

  609. grow.

  610. Our victory

  611. comes through

  612. Jesus' suffering

  613. his death

  614. and his

  615. resurrection

  616. and I think

  617. it also works

  618. in the church

  619. broadly

  620. as we've seen

  621. the church

  622. grows

  623. but

  624. also in our

  625. death

  626. and resurrection

  627. with Christ

  628. each day.

  629. For us as a

  630. church

  631. and individuals

  632. preaching Christ

  633. in Chatswood

  634. and on our

  635. front lines

  636. with our

  637. family and

  638. friends

  639. we are not

  640. yet at the

  641. point of

  642. shedding blood

  643. not yet at the

  644. point of shedding

  645. blood here

  646. but death

  647. and resurrection

  648. is the way

  649. that we are

  650. saved

  651. and it is

  652. also the

  653. pattern of

  654. our lives

  655. and the

  656. weapon to

  657. see our

  658. lives

  659. shaped for

  660. Christ

  661. and to see

  662. people

  663. saved

  664. Jesus

  665. said that

  666. whoever wishes

  667. to save

  668. his life

  669. will lose

  670. it

  671. but whoever

  672. loses

  673. his life

  674. for my

  675. sake

  676. will find

  677. it

  678. the pattern

  679. of a

  680. Christian

  681. follows this

  682. same pattern

  683. of victory

  684. through suffering

  685. we die

  686. we die to

  687. ourself

  688. and we

  689. live

  690. to Christ

  691. Paul says

  692. in 2

  693. Corinthians 4

  694. that he's

  695. hard pressed

  696. his body

  697. is being

  698. given over

  699. to death

  700. so that

  701. life might

  702. be revealed

  703. the call

  704. of Jesus

  705. to us

  706. to his

  707. disciples

  708. is to

  709. die

  710. die

  711. to yourself

  712. surrender

  713. your career

  714. and future

  715. prospects

  716. surrender

  717. your status

  718. and reputation

  719. surrender

  720. your desires

  721. to have

  722. everything

  723. that society

  724. tells you

  725. you must

  726. have

  727. the newest

  728. and the best

  729. you see

  730. those sins

  731. of pride

  732. and lust

  733. and arrogance

  734. put them

  735. to death

  736. so that

  737. Jesus

  738. is the

  739. priority

  740. and he

  741. sets the

  742. direction

  743. for your

  744. life

  745. he gives

  746. life

  747. because the

  748. idols we

  749. chase

  750. won't

  751. embrace

  752. the death

  753. of chasing

  754. career

  755. put to

  756. death

  757. the chasing

  758. after self

  759. worth

  760. on your

  761. own

  762. live to

  763. the worth

  764. of Christ

  765. who died

  766. for you

  767. and valued

  768. you above

  769. his own

  770. life

  771. whenever

  772. we

  773. we give

  774. money

  775. to the

  776. church

  777. for the

  778. sake of

  779. the gospel

  780. whenever we

  781. give of our

  782. time

  783. our talents

  784. our treasures

  785. you are

  786. dying to

  787. yourself

  788. and you

  789. are dying

  790. to building

  791. your own

  792. kingdom

  793. and God

  794. gives life

  795. and he

  796. and we

  797. get to be

  798. satisfied in

  799. him

  800. whenever we

  801. choose to

  802. witness to

  803. a friend

  804. we are

  805. dying to

  806. ourself

  807. and our

  808. own

  809. comfort

  810. to see

  811. a loved

  812. one

  813. saved

  814. and God

  815. gives life

  816. whenever you

  817. pick up your

  818. bible and

  819. read it

  820. choose

  821. trying to

  822. do

  823. to read

  824. your bible

  825. four or

  826. more times

  827. to see

  828. growth in

  829. your life

  830. in Christ

  831. whenever you

  832. pick up your

  833. bible and

  834. read it

  835. you are

  836. putting to

  837. death

  838. your own

  839. control

  840. of your

  841. life

  842. and saying

  843. God

  844. you are

  845. the one

  846. who

  847. gives me

  848. life

  849. you are

  850. the one

  851. who leads

  852. me

  853. I will

  854. obey you

  855. and you

  856. give me

  857. life

  858. whenever you

  859. are faced

  860. with sin

  861. and choose

  862. to obey

  863. God

  864. you put

  865. to death

  866. the idea

  867. that you

  868. know what's

  869. best

  870. you worship

  871. Jesus

  872. as the

  873. king

  874. every

  875. moment

  876. of dying

  877. to self

  878. and choosing

  879. God

  880. is a

  881. moment

  882. of life

  883. by the

  884. spirit

  885. this is

  886. God's

  887. weapon

  888. to build

  889. his

  890. kingdom

  891. this is

  892. God's

  893. weapon

  894. to build

  895. himself

  896. in us

  897. and across

  898. the world

  899. let me pray

  900. heavenly father

  901. we thank you

  902. for this

  903. reminder from

  904. revelation 11

  905. that you

  906. do protect

  907. us

  908. because we

  909. will be

  910. persecuted

  911. but we

  912. thank you

  913. that you

  914. will

  915. indeed

  916. vindicate

  917. us

  918. help us

  919. not chase

  920. that in

  921. our own

  922. time

  923. but wait

  924. patiently

  925. for your

  926. son to

  927. return

  928. heavenly father

  929. we ask

  930. that each

  931. day we

  932. live we

  933. would live

  934. for you

  935. and we

  936. would die

  937. to ourselves

  938. fill us

  939. with your

  940. spirit

  941. help us

  942. to do

  943. that

  944. so that

  945. we would

  946. have more

  947. of you

  948. so that

  949. we would

  950. love you

  951. more

  952. that we

  953. would

  954. treasure

  955. you

  956. more

  957. and so

  958. that we

  959. would see

  960. many

  961. come to

  962. know and

  963. love you

  964. we ask

  965. this in

  966. your son's

  967. name and

  968. all for

  969. your glory

  970. amen
