  1. 2020 has been an unusual year,

  2. but a good year for us to learn Agile as a church.

  3. We had just experienced some easing of restriction

  4. still due to another outbreak of COVID-19 in the Northern Beaches.

  5. We are moving back to online gathering this morning.

  6. Another good thing out of such a strange year

  7. would be fewer people would have lost their voice

  8. because we cannot meet together.

  9. I remember when I was much younger,

  10. I would meet up with friends over the weekend

  11. and we would go karaoke to sing at the top of our voice

  12. and drink for the whole night till dawn.

  13. On Monday morning, we are often very quiet

  14. because we have lost our voice.

  15. We would gradually get our voice back over the week,

  16. but we lose it again in the weekend.

  17. We are terrible at saving our voice,

  18. let alone saving ourselves.

  19. We can lose our voice over sininess,

  20. and we can lose it due to sickness.

  21. It can also happen to us due to some exceptional reason.

  22. In our passage today, we meet Zechariah,

  23. who lost his voice for about 10 months.

  24. And it was because God has something special planned.

  25. Imagine what would daily life be

  26. and relationship between Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth

  27. be like during the 10 months of pregnancy.

  28. They have been married for a long time

  29. and would have gotten used to communicating with each other.

  30. And now they have found a new way to communicate.

  31. We see Zechariah at the point of him getting his voice back after 10 months.

  32. He was unable to speak in silence.

  33. It is a time also where God starts to speak to his people again

  34. after being in silence for more than 400 years,

  35. since he has last spoken through the couple of minor prophets,

  36. including Malachi,

  37. towards the end of the Old Testament.

  38. God broke his silence through the angel Gabriel,

  39. as Eve has shared with us.

  40. He spoke to Zechariah and Mary

  41. to foretell the birth of two significant people,

  42. John the Baptist and Jesus.

  43. We are at the point of significant changes in human history.

  44. The birth of John the Baptist and Jesus

  45. also means significant changes

  46. to whoever will believe in the message they bring and in Jesus.

  47. I want to give voice to three changes

  48. to highlight them from today's passage.

  49. Change from fear to anticipation.

  50. From loss in sin to serving him.

  51. And from darkness to light.

  52. God broke his silence through the angel Gabriel

  53. to tell Zechariah that he and his wife

  54. will have a son while in their old age.

  55. And Zechariah won a sign

  56. as proved that it will happen,

  57. as the angel Gabriel said.

  58. So he was silent

  59. and not be able to speak

  60. until the pregnancy is fulfilled,

  61. until the prophecy is fulfilled.

  62. This questioning of God's power and instruction

  63. is typical of humans all through the ages.

  64. After God created the first couple of humans,

  65. Adam and Eve,

  66. they were presented with a question,

  67. did God really say?

  68. They were tempted and encouraged

  69. to question what God has said.

  70. And they failed to uphold God's word

  71. and other things that did not come from God's mouth

  72. and end up doing what God asked them not to do.

  73. The result was when they heard the sound of God,

  74. they hide from God.

  75. They were afraid and ashamed to see God.

  76. People become fearful of God

  77. because they know they have not obeyed God's word

  78. and have broken their relationship with God.

  79. And it is impossible for anyone

  80. to fully obey God from that point onward,

  81. except Jesus, the Son of God.

  82. The whole Bible is about

  83. how God worked on keeping his relationship

  84. with his people

  85. and how people keep turning their back on God.

  86. Instead of treachering their relationship with God,

  87. they treasure each other people

  88. or things more than their creator.

  89. Things such as traditions,

  90. reputations, fame and fortunes.

  91. Instead of carefully listening to

  92. and following his words,

  93. they put words in God's mouth

  94. and follow a God of their own imagination.

  95. God is the one who speaks to his people,

  96. who lay out everything to his people

  97. to ensure that they have a working relationship with him.

  98. But we are the one

  99. that keeps doing things our way

  100. and breaking that relationship.

  101. We try to silence God

  102. and we refuse to listen.

  103. God gave his people the silent treatment

  104. because they did not believe

  105. or obey God's words and prophecy.

  106. They even questioned God's love for them.

  107. They questioned in Malachi 1-2,

  108. after God said,

  109. I have loved you,

  110. they asked,

  111. how have you loved us?

  112. Humans do not honor or respect God.

  113. The whole Bible shows us

  114. how people are going back and forth with God

  115. in their questioning.

  116. And that questioning still happens today.

  117. When we hold disrespect

  118. and disregard towards someone,

  119. it will not be easy

  120. to build a relationship.

  121. What is often left

  122. would be fear and contempt.

  123. Especially when we deliberately disobey

  124. someone or twist their words

  125. or misrepresent them.

  126. Whatever relationship

  127. we think that we share

  128. would be very shallow

  129. and superficial.

  130. So how is your relationship

  131. with God and others?

  132. Luke 1-6 told us that

  133. Zechariah and his wife

  134. had a good relationship with God.

  135. Both of them were righteous

  136. in the sight of God,

  137. observing all the laws,

  138. commands, and decrees blamelessly.

  139. God had so mercy

  140. towards Zechariah and Elizabeth

  141. by granting them a son

  142. at their old age.

  143. And they seemed to have

  144. a good relationship

  145. with their neighbors

  146. and relatives as well

  147. because they came to share

  148. the joy in the birth of their son.

  149. However,

  150. 1st 12 still tells us

  151. that even Zechariah,

  152. righteous in God's eyes,

  153. was gripped with fear

  154. when the angel appeared to him.

  155. We should maintain a sense of fear

  156. and respect towards God,

  157. our Creator.

  158. Our healthy kind of fear

  159. and respect

  160. will stop us from being contempt

  161. and becoming a fool.

  162. Prophet 1-9 says,

  163. The fear of the Lord

  164. is the beginning of knowledge,

  165. but fools despise wisdom

  166. and instructions.

  167. A healthy kind of fear

  168. will help us to listen up

  169. with attention to details.

  170. It will not paralyze us,

  171. but help us to do the right things.

  172. The right kind of fear

  173. is enabling,

  174. is attentive.

  175. Zechariah was kept

  176. from speaking for 10 months,

  177. but he made sure

  178. Elizabeth got the instruction

  179. of the angel

  180. regarding what name

  181. to call their son.

  182. He made sure

  183. history did not repeat itself,

  184. that his wife upheld

  185. God's instruction

  186. and did not add anything

  187. to it like Eve.

  188. As both Elizabeth and Zechariah

  189. confirmed their son's name

  190. in his John,

  191. Luke says in verse 64,

  192. immediately his mouth was opened

  193. and his son set free.

  194. He began to speak,

  195. praising God.

  196. All the neighbors

  197. were filled with oil.

  198. And throughout the hill country

  199. of Judea,

  200. people were talking

  201. about all these things.

  202. Everyone who heard

  203. his wonders about it,

  204. asking,

  205. What then is this child

  206. going to be?

  207. For the Lord's hands

  208. was with him.

  209. Can you imagine

  210. what kinds of anticipation

  211. Zechariah and Elizabeth

  212. have been through

  213. up to this point?

  214. They did not have

  215. any outro sound back then,

  216. even though they may be able

  217. to tell from different signs,

  218. such as the shape

  219. of the belly,

  220. whether the baby

  221. is a boy or a girl.

  222. Was it run for girls

  223. and pointed for boys,

  224. or terrible morning sickness

  225. in the first three months

  226. for boys

  227. or the other way around?

  228. I have to ask my mom.

  229. They would not know

  230. that firstborn

  231. is a son or not

  232. until he was born.

  233. But when he was born,

  234. great anticipation

  235. awaits them.

  236. And the neighbors

  237. and the relatives

  238. share their anticipation.

  239. The anticipation

  240. of what is to come,

  241. what is this child

  242. is going to be.

  243. More so,

  244. the anticipation

  245. of what God will do

  246. with humanity

  247. through Jesus our Lord.

  248. We'll move from fear

  249. and an uncertain relationship

  250. to a great anticipation

  251. of what he will do

  252. with our life.

  253. The key to that change

  254. is our Lord Jesus.

  255. His arrival

  256. repairs our relationship

  257. with God.

  258. He placed his Holy Spirit

  259. in those who believe in him

  260. to help us

  261. to turn and obey

  262. the command of God

  263. so that we can change

  264. from fear

  265. to anticipation.

  266. And we will also change

  267. from loss in sin

  268. to serving him.

  269. At the birth of his son,

  270. when Zechariah

  271. holds firm

  272. to the instruction of God

  273. by naming him John,

  274. God broke his ten months

  275. silence.

  276. And Zechariah

  277. was filled

  278. with the Holy Spirit

  279. and unable to speak again.

  280. He prays and prophesies

  281. from verse 68.

  282. Praise be to the Lord,

  283. the God of Israel,

  284. because he has come

  285. to his people

  286. and redeemed them.

  287. He has raised up

  288. a horn of salvation

  289. for us

  290. in the house

  291. of his servant David,

  292. as he said

  293. through his holy prophets

  294. of long ago.

  295. Salvation

  296. from our enemies

  297. and from the hands

  298. of all who hate us.

  299. God is no longer silent.

  300. He has spoken

  301. and he deserves

  302. all our praises

  303. because he has come

  304. to his people

  305. to redeem them.

  306. A horn

  307. can also mean

  308. a strong king.

  309. So he has raised

  310. a strong king

  311. to save his people

  312. from their enemies.

  313. The greatest enemies

  314. of humans

  315. are sin

  316. because it breaks

  317. our relationship

  318. with God.

  319. However,

  320. with the birth

  321. of Jesus,

  322. our Lord and Savior,

  323. our enemies

  324. have been dealt with,

  325. we can get back

  326. to a great relationship

  327. with God.

  328. As I have indicated before,

  329. God's plans

  330. of salvation

  331. was foretold

  332. in the whole Bible,

  333. spoke through

  334. his holy prophets

  335. all through the ages

  336. from long ago.

  337. We need to be safe

  338. because of our

  339. broken relationship

  340. with God.

  341. We need God

  342. to come

  343. and save us

  344. because we are

  345. bad at saving ourselves.

  346. We cannot save ourselves.

  347. And like Adam

  348. and Eve,

  349. after realizing

  350. what they have done,

  351. we are running away

  352. and hiding

  353. from God

  354. instead of running

  355. towards him.

  356. How do I know that?

  357. Because we still

  358. try to hide

  359. from the sound

  360. of God.

  361. We tend to spend

  362. lesser and lesser

  363. time

  364. to read the Bible,

  365. to let God

  366. speak to us.

  367. we are letting

  368. other people

  369. or things

  370. to be our

  371. small letter G,

  372. God,

  373. instead of making

  374. sure God,

  375. the creator of the world,

  376. is truly the ruler

  377. of our life.

  378. We spend

  379. less and less time

  380. into reading

  381. God's word,

  382. but more and more time

  383. in social media,

  384. checking out

  385. the latest posts.

  386. We spend

  387. less and less time

  388. in praying to God,

  389. but more and more time

  390. in replying emails

  391. or checking out

  392. the latest Netflix.

  393. Do you really need

  394. your Netflix account?

  395. For some who read

  396. the Bible

  397. and pray,

  398. it was more

  399. to cock in

  400. and tick the box

  401. that we have done so,

  402. to make us feel

  403. at ease

  404. with ourselves.

  405. But there's no growth

  406. in our relationship

  407. with God.

  408. How do I know

  409. that

  410. some of us

  411. still lost

  412. because

  413. we cannot

  414. confidently

  415. cry out,

  416. come,

  417. Lord Jesus,

  418. come.

  419. We worry about

  420. how God

  421. looked at us.

  422. Our eyes

  423. still fix on

  424. what we have

  425. or have not done.

  426. And we serve

  427. God

  428. out of fear

  429. or to earn

  430. God's favour

  431. and the

  432. acknowledgement

  433. of others

  434. instead of

  435. serving out

  436. of gratitude

  437. of our hearts.

  438. But God

  439. had come

  440. to change

  441. all that.

  442. He comes

  443. to save us.

  444. He has come

  445. to us

  446. to remove

  447. our fear

  448. by doing

  449. with the

  450. roots

  451. of the

  452. problem,

  453. our sins.

  454. He has

  455. overcome

  456. our enemies

  457. and set

  458. us free

  459. for a purpose.

  460. Verse 72

  461. say,

  462. He come

  463. to show

  464. mercy

  465. to our

  466. ancestors

  467. and to

  468. remember

  469. his holy

  470. covenant,

  471. to rescue

  472. us from

  473. the hands

  474. of our

  475. enemies

  476. and to

  477. enable us

  478. to serve

  479. him without

  480. fear,

  481. in holiness

  482. and righteousness

  483. before him

  484. all our

  485. days.

  486. we are

  487. saved

  488. to serve

  489. him,

  490. to become

  491. God's

  492. full oneness

  493. like

  494. Zechariah's

  495. son John

  496. the Baptist.

  497. It reads

  498. on from

  499. verse 76,

  500. 6,

  501. and you,

  502. my child,

  503. will be

  504. called a

  505. prophet of

  506. the Most

  507. High,

  508. for you

  509. will go

  510. on before

  511. the Lord

  512. to prepare

  513. the way

  514. for him,

  515. to give

  516. his people

  517. the knowledge

  518. of salvation

  519. through the

  520. forgiveness

  521. of their

  522. sins.

  523. We are

  524. called to

  525. give God's

  526. people the

  527. knowledge of

  528. salvation

  529. through the

  530. forgiveness

  531. of their

  532. sins.

  533. What do

  534. you know

  535. about how

  536. people are

  537. saved?

  538. How are

  539. our sins

  540. being forgiven

  541. by God?

  542. How does

  543. someone get

  544. right with

  545. God?

  546. The answer

  547. to these

  548. questions are

  549. the most

  550. fundamental

  551. for any

  552. Christian.

  553. Peter

  554. urges

  555. in his

  556. letter in

  557. 1 Peter 3,

  558. 13-15,

  559. who is

  560. going to

  561. harm you

  562. if you

  563. are eager

  564. to do

  565. good?

  566. But even

  567. if you

  568. should suffer

  569. for what

  570. is right,

  571. you are

  572. blessed.

  573. Do not

  574. fear what

  575. they fear.

  576. Do not

  577. be frightened.

  578. But in

  579. your hearts,

  580. reference

  581. Christ as

  582. Lord.

  583. Always be

  584. prepared to

  585. give an

  586. answer to

  587. everyone who

  588. asks you to

  589. give the

  590. reason for

  591. the hope

  592. that you

  593. have.

  594. But do

  595. this with

  596. gentleness

  597. and respect.

  598. We are

  599. saved to

  600. serve by

  601. telling others

  602. about the

  603. great salvation

  604. that awaits

  605. them.

  606. We are

  607. saved to

  608. serve by

  609. answering

  610. questions about

  611. our hope.

  612. If you are

  613. not sure how

  614. to do it,

  615. please speak

  616. up.

  617. Don't remain

  618. silent and

  619. treat God

  620. with contempt.

  621. Stop living

  622. in fear,

  623. but instead

  624. live in

  625. anticipation of

  626. the great

  627. things God

  628. will do in

  629. your life.

  630. Cling to

  631. Jesus.

  632. Look into

  633. his word.

  634. Speak to

  635. him in

  636. prayer,

  637. so your

  638. sin will

  639. be removed

  640. and you

  641. will be

  642. safe and

  643. free to

  644. serve him.

  645. Speaking up

  646. is very

  647. important.

  648. Imagine

  649. Elizabeth did

  650. not speak up

  651. about the

  652. name of

  653. their child.

  654. The relative

  655. and neighbors

  656. would not

  657. have asked

  658. Zechariah to

  659. confirm the

  660. name, and

  661. he would

  662. not have the

  663. chance to

  664. demonstrate

  665. his determination

  666. to obey

  667. God's

  668. instruction

  669. fully.

  670. What

  671. Zechariah and

  672. Elizabeth

  673. were instructed

  674. to do

  675. was groundbreaking

  676. and

  677. atonish

  678. everyone there,

  679. because what

  680. they were

  681. doing was

  682. breaking with

  683. tradition.

  684. Instead of

  685. following the

  686. tradition to

  687. call their

  688. son Zechariah,

  689. which means

  690. God remembers,

  691. their son's

  692. name is

  693. John, which

  694. means God

  695. is gracious

  696. and merciful.

  697. Holding on

  698. to tradition

  699. could be one

  700. of the signs

  701. of someone

  702. living in

  703. darkness

  704. instead of

  705. the light.

  706. Instead of

  707. being guided

  708. by God

  709. to live a

  710. daily renewed

  711. life,

  712. they remain

  713. in the

  714. dark by

  715. thinking that

  716. they are

  717. okay because

  718. of their

  719. tradition.

  720. Because they

  721. have done

  722. religious deeds

  723. or because

  724. my family

  725. has always

  726. been Christian.

  727. It's like

  728. saying,

  729. God has

  730. been quiet

  731. for 400

  732. years now.

  733. We are

  734. used to

  735. the silence.

  736. God broke

  737. the tradition

  738. with John

  739. the Baptist.

  740. He is

  741. appointed

  742. from birth

  743. to speak

  744. up for

  745. God,

  746. to bring

  747. light into

  748. darkness

  749. of this

  750. world.

  751. And you,

  752. my child,

  753. will be

  754. called

  755. prophet

  756. of the

  757. Most

  758. High.

  759. For you

  760. will go

  761. on before

  762. the Lord

  763. to prepare

  764. the way

  765. for him,

  766. to give

  767. his people

  768. the knowledge

  769. of salvation

  770. through the

  771. forgiveness

  772. of their

  773. sins.

  774. Because the

  775. tender mercy

  776. of our

  777. God,

  778. by which

  779. the rising

  780. sun will

  781. come to

  782. us from

  783. heaven,

  784. to shine

  785. on those

  786. living in

  787. darkness

  788. and in

  789. the shadow

  790. of death,

  791. to guide

  792. our feet

  793. into the

  794. path of

  795. peace.

  796. the

  797. rising

  798. sun

  799. has

  800. come

  801. to us

  802. from

  803. heaven

  804. to shine

  805. on those

  806. living in

  807. darkness

  808. and in

  809. the shadow

  810. of death,

  811. to guide

  812. our feet

  813. into the

  814. path of

  815. peace.

  816. The

  817. rising

  818. sun

  819. is referring

  820. to Jesus,

  821. who is

  822. soon to be

  823. born at

  824. this point.

  825. The birth

  826. of Jesus

  827. offers

  828. transformation

  829. to those

  830. lost

  831. people who

  832. are living

  833. in

  834. darkness,

  835. meaninglessly

  836. porting

  837. through life

  838. to a

  839. life with

  840. abundance.

  841. One of

  842. the ways

  843. we know

  844. people are

  845. living in

  846. darkness

  847. is when

  848. we value

  849. tradition

  850. and

  851. convenience

  852. more than

  853. God's

  854. instruction

  855. and

  856. commands.

  857. When we

  858. hold the

  859. way we

  860. used to

  861. do certain

  862. things

  863. with greater

  864. significance

  865. than

  866. obedience

  867. towards

  868. God's

  869. instruction

  870. through

  871. his

  872. appointed

  873. messenger.

  874. it's at

  875. the time

  876. that we

  877. step away

  878. from

  879. light

  880. and

  881. step

  882. into

  883. darkness

  884. if we

  885. value

  886. tradition

  887. and

  888. convenience.

  889. To deal

  890. with COVID-19,

  891. we need to

  892. go online

  893. to keep

  894. each other

  895. safe.

  896. We need

  897. to be

  898. agile

  899. and follow

  900. the health

  901. advice and

  902. guidelines

  903. of our

  904. government

  905. and our

  906. diocese.

  907. We are

  908. having church

  909. online

  910. only today.

  911. it's a

  912. testimony

  913. of how

  914. hard we

  915. have

  916. worked

  917. in keeping

  918. each other

  919. safe

  920. at St.

  921. Paul's.

  922. So,

  923. when it's

  924. safe for

  925. us to

  926. meet face

  927. to face

  928. again,

  929. what will

  930. be your

  931. anticipation?

  932. It's,

  933. of course,

  934. more convenient

  935. to stay at

  936. home to

  937. watch a live

  938. streaming of

  939. church.

  940. Some of

  941. us will

  942. have to

  943. continue

  944. meeting with

  945. us online

  946. because of

  947. health

  948. reasons.

  949. But will

  950. you be

  951. choosing to

  952. stay home

  953. and not

  954. coming to

  955. church together

  956. face to

  957. face because

  958. you cannot

  959. have your

  960. usual cup

  961. of tea or

  962. have to

  963. wear a

  964. mask to

  965. sing?

  966. It's your

  967. usual way of

  968. doing things

  969. stopping you

  970. from obeying

  971. God together

  972. together to

  973. worship him.

  974. one of the

  975. ways for us

  976. to get from

  977. darkness to

  978. light is to

  979. speak up about

  980. things.

  981. Things that are

  982. not right

  983. according to

  984. God.

  985. To confess

  986. the wrong

  987. doings,

  988. the sins in

  989. our life

  990. and repent.

  991. Repentance

  992. means turning.

  993. Turning from

  994. your tradition

  995. and look back

  996. to God's

  997. words and

  998. instruction.

  999. Turning

  1000. from being

  1001. a consumer

  1002. to live

  1003. a life of

  1004. a disciple,

  1005. a follower

  1006. of Jesus.

  1007. Turn to

  1008. pursue

  1009. discipleship.

  1010. When Paul

  1011. speaks up

  1012. about his

  1013. life and

  1014. the works

  1015. of God

  1016. at the

  1017. end of

  1018. Acts in

  1019. chapter 26

  1020. verse 20

  1021. he said,

  1022. first to

  1023. those in

  1024. Damascus,

  1025. then to

  1026. those in

  1027. Jerusalem

  1028. and all

  1029. Judea,

  1030. and then to

  1031. the Gentiles

  1032. preach that

  1033. they should

  1034. repent and

  1035. turn to

  1036. God and

  1037. demonstrate

  1038. their repentance

  1039. by their

  1040. deeds.

  1041. To change

  1042. from darkness

  1043. to light,

  1044. we need to

  1045. acknowledge our

  1046. sin and

  1047. repent.

  1048. True repentance

  1049. is not done

  1050. in the dark.

  1051. It's

  1052. demonstrable.

  1053. It's not

  1054. saying sorry

  1055. and keep

  1056. going without

  1057. any changes.

  1058. Jesus

  1059. offers

  1060. transformation

  1061. from living

  1062. sinful,

  1063. unholy

  1064. life to

  1065. lives of

  1066. righteousness.

  1067. The birth

  1068. of Jesus

  1069. is much

  1070. more than

  1071. giving us

  1072. a reason

  1073. to get

  1074. together,

  1075. to eat

  1076. food and

  1077. exchange

  1078. gifts.

  1079. The birth

  1080. of Jesus

  1081. is a

  1082. reminder

  1083. of the

  1084. monumental

  1085. changes

  1086. that God

  1087. is bringing

  1088. into all

  1089. of us,

  1090. which

  1091. begins in

  1092. salvation.

  1093. God

  1094. saves us

  1095. from a

  1096. life of

  1097. meaninglessness

  1098. to be

  1099. his servants.

  1100. How is

  1101. your

  1102. relationship

  1103. with God

  1104. and others?

  1105. Jesus

  1106. comes to

  1107. change out

  1108. your life.

  1109. What

  1110. changes and

  1111. growth have

  1112. you got to

  1113. show that

  1114. Jesus is in

  1115. your life?

  1116. What

  1117. anticipation

  1118. do you

  1119. hold?

  1120. What

  1121. service

  1122. have you

  1123. offered

  1124. to God?

  1125. Is a

  1126. life full

  1127. of light

  1128. as bright

  1129. as a

  1130. new dawn

  1131. sun?

  1132. It will

  1133. if you

  1134. stop hiding

  1135. and run

  1136. towards the

  1137. light.

  1138. Let the

  1139. Son of

  1140. God,

  1141. Jesus,

  1142. take hold

  1143. of your

  1144. life today

  1145. and let's

  1146. walk on

  1147. the path

  1148. of peace

  1149. that God

  1150. offers us

  1151. all.

  1152. Amen.
