  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. It is great to be back after some annual leave,

  3. particularly great to be back with the full team compliment back as well

  4. after annual leave, and the Freestones are back after long service leave

  5. since sometime in December, a while ago now.

  6. And also summer camp last week was fantastic.

  7. So thanks, Ash, for the update on that.

  8. It was a huge time.

  9. And if you were at summer camp last week,

  10. then you'll notice that this passage was one of the passages that I preached on.

  11. So that helped me as my preparation for this week.

  12. But hopefully it'll remind you of a few things.

  13. I want to launch in by praying because this is Vision Series.

  14. Every year I'm excited about Vision Series.

  15. I buy a new shirt for Vision Series every year.

  16. I've been doing it for 13 years.

  17. So I'm ready to kick off and look at where God's taking us in the next five years.

  18. So let's pray and we'll launch into that.

  19. Gracious God, we thank you for this opportunity for us as a church

  20. to think about the things of where you might be leading us

  21. because we're looking in the past and what you have commanded us to do.

  22. Lord, we pray that throughout this term and even this day,

  23. that you would captivate each one of our lives

  24. so that we are more dusty from the dust of Jesus' feet.

  25. And we ask it for your glory.

  26. Amen.

  27. So as I've indicated, this is a very important term for us at St. Paul's.

  28. After closing out 11 years of Vision 2020,

  29. at the end of last year,

  30. we're launching into this new stage of ministry and life together

  31. here at St. Paul's with Follow 25.

  32. You've got a copy on your seats of Follow 25 in our strategic plan.

  33. It's a shift in our ministry culture to the deliberate development of disciples,

  34. all of life disciples of Jesus by the end of 2025.

  35. And if one of the pages, you'll notice what is the big, hairy, audacious goal.

  36. And that is for 65%, it's towards the back of it,

  37. 65% of St. Paul's identifying much growth in faith through this church.

  38. It is my understanding that no church can do that

  39. or has done that or is currently doing that.

  40. So that's why it's a big, hairy, audacious goal.

  41. And if there are a very small number of churches

  42. that are deliberately developing disciples in that kind of way,

  43. certainly in the Western world,

  44. that's our big, hairy, audacious goal,

  45. which means this plan is not just,

  46. well, let's just work a bit harder what we're already doing.

  47. Every vision, every ministry strategy means there must be some form of change

  48. in the way we behave.

  49. And so this one here is no different.

  50. Whatever stage of the journey you are on with Jesus right now,

  51. whether you are a not yet follower of Jesus

  52. through to someone who has been a lifelong follower of Jesus,

  53. our goal here is for the vast majority of us

  54. being able to self-identify

  55. that I am moving forward and grasping more of Jesus

  56. as he's grasping more of me.

  57. So in our preaching this term,

  58. we're taking a sweeping look at Christian discipleship.

  59. Things like it's the foundation of it,

  60. the resources for it,

  61. and what it looks like in practice.

  62. We're going to refine the strategic plan

  63. and commit to it by the end of the term.

  64. We're going to pledge our resources to seeing it realized.

  65. There's a raise a bunch of money

  66. by the end of the term to see discipleship

  67. amongst our next generation flourish

  68. and just a range of other stuff.

  69. So today we're looking at the key foundation

  70. of Christian discipleship.

  71. And if you've got the St. Paul's app in front of you,

  72. I want to encourage you to open that up

  73. and follow along with the outline.

  74. There's really two main points here

  75. for us to see that being a Christian,

  76. being a disciple,

  77. means that we are following the Lord

  78. and secondly,

  79. we are following the crucified Lord.

  80. So following the Lord first of all.

  81. The word disciple

  82. used in Christian circles nowadays mainly

  83. is a word that was not coined by Jesus himself.

  84. It's not a uniquely Christian term.

  85. John the Baptist had disciples,

  86. Pharisees had the disciples,

  87. Greek philosophers had their disciples,

  88. Jewish rabbis had their disciples.

  89. It was common word in Greek and Roman empires.

  90. And the word disciple literally means

  91. to be a student,

  92. to be a learner.

  93. That's its core meaning.

  94. In the Jewish context,

  95. a disciple would take the posture

  96. of sitting and learning from their teacher,

  97. sitting at the feet of their teacher

  98. and learning from them,

  99. not just a set of doctrines,

  100. but all of life.

  101. But also,

  102. that disciple would follow closely

  103. as they watched their teacher

  104. live all of life.

  105. And so the saying

  106. that a disciple should become dusty

  107. with the dust of their rabbi

  108. was a Jewish saying

  109. in the first century.

  110. That is,

  111. they are to follow them so closely

  112. in all of life

  113. that they would be covered in the dust

  114. stirred up from the feet of their teacher

  115. as they walked.

  116. Now,

  117. one notable thing

  118. about the disciple-teacher relationship

  119. in Jewish tradition

  120. is that the disciples chose their teacher.

  121. Disciples chose their rabbis.

  122. The Christian, however,

  123. is chosen and called by Jesus.

  124. From the moment his public ministry commenced,

  125. Jesus called disciples

  126. to leave everything,

  127. your family,

  128. your fishing nets,

  129. and follow me.

  130. And from those early,

  131. early disciples,

  132. those fishermen,

  133. tax collectors,

  134. he has changed the world.

  135. And he continues

  136. to call people

  137. from every tribe,

  138. language,

  139. nation,

  140. and people

  141. to follow him today.

  142. So who is it

  143. that has the authority

  144. to call people

  145. to leave everything

  146. and fully align themselves

  147. to him?

  148. Who is it

  149. that the Christian follows?

  150. That's the question.

  151. That's the question

  152. posed in front of us

  153. in Mark 8.

  154. Who do you say I am

  155. is the question

  156. that Jesus asked

  157. his closest followers.

  158. But before he asked

  159. that question,

  160. he asked them another question.

  161. Who do

  162. others

  163. say I am?

  164. What's the general consensus

  165. out there

  166. about who I am?

  167. Jesus of Nazareth,

  168. Jesus the Christ,

  169. is undoubtedly

  170. the most popular,

  171. the most recognized,

  172. the most quoted,

  173. the most admired,

  174. and the most controversial figure

  175. in all of the history

  176. of humanity

  177. and human society.

  178. No other person

  179. has been more scrutinized,

  180. more studied

  181. than Jesus of Nazareth,

  182. ever.

  183. No one.

  184. Entire philosophies

  185. and religions

  186. have been founded

  187. on his teaching.

  188. More books

  189. have been written

  190. about him

  191. than any other person

  192. who has ever lived.

  193. Every day,

  194. his name

  195. is spoken

  196. more than any other name

  197. from affectionate

  198. admiration

  199. to absent-minded

  200. curses

  201. and denouncements.

  202. The large figures

  203. of history

  204. have had to

  205. acknowledge him.

  206. John Lennon

  207. couldn't think

  208. of anything

  209. bigger

  210. when he said

  211. at the height

  212. of their fame

  213. that the Beatles

  214. were bigger than Jesus.

  215. He couldn't think

  216. of anything else

  217. to name.

  218. President George W. Bush

  219. cited Jesus

  220. as his favorite philosopher.

  221. The French Emperor

  222. Napoleon Bonaparte

  223. said,

  224. Alexander,

  225. Caesar,

  226. Charlemagne

  227. and myself

  228. founded empires,

  229. but on what foundation

  230. did they rest

  231. the creations

  232. of our genius?

  233. Upon force,

  234. Jesus Christ

  235. founded an empire

  236. upon love

  237. and this hour

  238. millions of men

  239. would die for him.

  240. The Cuban

  241. communist dictator

  242. Fidel Castro

  243. said,

  244. I never saw

  245. a contradiction

  246. between the ideas

  247. that sustain me

  248. and the ideas

  249. that symbol

  250. of that

  251. extraordinary figure

  252. Jesus Christ.

  253. No message

  254. has been more

  255. used

  256. and exploited

  257. than Jesus Christ.

  258. Politicians

  259. grab from him

  260. quotable quotes

  261. to prop up

  262. their political platform.

  263. Every religion

  264. in the world

  265. too,

  266. Christian or not,

  267. has to factor

  268. to some degree

  269. an appraisal

  270. of Jesus himself.

  271. It might be

  272. to honor him

  273. as one of God's

  274. great prophets

  275. or an enlightened man

  276. or to reject him

  277. as a fraud

  278. or to hail him

  279. as the king of kings

  280. and the savior

  281. of the world.

  282. No person

  283. is more misunderstood,

  284. marginalized

  285. and commercialized

  286. than Jesus Christ.

  287. He's been fictionalized

  288. by the last temptation

  289. of Christ,

  290. humanized by the passion

  291. of the Christ

  292. and he's been

  293. satirized by the Simpsons

  294. and South Park.

  295. Even the Christian church

  296. is guilty

  297. of marketing Jesus

  298. as we have put

  299. our own spit

  300. on him.

  301. He is viewed

  302. as either a stern

  303. taskmaster

  304. or as a moral jellyfish

  305. willing to hand

  306. our forgiveness

  307. and turn a blind eye

  308. to anyone

  309. who prays a shallow

  310. prayer of confession

  311. only to live lives

  312. devoid of his presence.

  313. Get Jesus wrong,

  314. you get discipleship wrong.

  315. It is incomprehensible

  316. to me

  317. that Fidel Castro

  318. saw no contradiction

  319. between his life

  320. and the life of Jesus

  321. except

  322. that he has put

  323. a spin on Jesus

  324. that is not true.

  325. He has not engaged

  326. to the true Jesus Christ.

  327. Who is Jesus?

  328. What did he do

  329. and what does it mean

  330. to follow him?

  331. How do we live

  332. as committed disciples

  333. of Jesus today?

  334. Those are the sorts

  335. of questions

  336. we're delving into

  337. over this term.

  338. Now Mark

  339. does not want us

  340. to be vague

  341. about the Christian faith.

  342. He longs

  343. that we get

  344. an accurate picture

  345. of who Jesus is

  346. and what he came

  347. to do

  348. and chapter 8

  349. is the pivotal chapter

  350. in this gospel.

  351. The disciples

  352. finally begin

  353. to see

  354. who Jesus

  355. actually is

  356. and in verse 25

  357. Peter answers

  358. the big question

  359. of the identity

  360. of Jesus.

  361. You're the Christ.

  362. Peter is using

  363. a word

  364. that literally means

  365. you are

  366. the anointed one.

  367. The anointed one,

  368. the Messiah,

  369. the king

  370. to end

  371. all kings,

  372. the king

  373. who will put

  374. everything right

  375. in this world

  376. that has gone wrong

  377. and when Peter

  378. says that

  379. Jesus accepts

  380. the title.

  381. That is

  382. Jesus does not

  383. call people

  384. to be curious

  385. onlookers.

  386. Can I say

  387. that he doesn't

  388. even call people

  389. to be converts?

  390. He calls them

  391. to be disciples.

  392. He calls them

  393. to be fully

  394. committed followers

  395. and the name

  396. gives it away

  397. Christian.

  398. The term

  399. was first used

  400. in the city

  401. of Antioch

  402. in Acts chapter 11.

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  403. It's part Greek

  404. part Latin.

  405. It means

  406. followers

  407. of the Christ.

  408. Christ.

  409. For the early

  410. Christians

  411. Christ was so

  412. much on the

  413. lips of these

  414. believers

  415. and they lived

  416. so like Christ

  417. that the pagan

  418. city of Antioch

  419. said

  420. there's no

  421. other name

  422. but to call

  423. them

  424. of the name

  425. Christ.

  426. No other name

  427. would do.

  428. Christian,

  429. disciple,

  430. follower,

  431. they're all

  432. interchangeable words

  433. to describe

  434. a relationship

  435. with Jesus

  436. Christ

  437. in such

  438. a way

  439. that he

  440. is your

  441. Lord

  442. and he

  443. shapes

  444. and impacts

  445. every

  446. corner

  447. of your

  448. existence.

  449. And so

  450. discipleship

  451. speaks of a

  452. lifelong journey

  453. of following

  454. Jesus,

  455. 100%

  456. dedication

  457. to him

  458. where he

  459. shapes

  460. every

  461. aspect of

  462. you

  463. into

  464. his

  465. image.

  466. However,

  467. the one

  468. thing that

  469. comes out

  470. of Jesus'

  471. mouth

  472. that Peter

  473. and he's

  474. a spokesman

  475. for the

  476. disciples

  477. that they

  478. find appalling

  479. and shocking.

  480. Take a look

  481. at it with

  482. me.

  483. Mark 8

    Mark 8:31

  484. verse 31.

  485. He then

  486. began to

  487. teach them

  488. that the

  489. Son of

  490. Man must

  491. suffer many

  492. things

  493. and be

  494. rejected by

  495. the elders,

  496. the chief

  497. priests and

  498. the teacher

  499. of the law

  500. and that

  501. he must

  502. be killed

  503. and after

  504. three days

  505. rise again.

  506. He spoke

  507. plainly about

  508. this and

  509. Peter took

  510. him aside

  511. and began

  512. to rebuke

  513. him.

  514. Jesus says

  515. here,

  516. the Son of

  517. Man must

  518. suffer.

  519. He picks

  520. up the

  521. title,

  522. the Son of

  523. Man,

  524. from Daniel

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  525. chapter 7

  526. in the Old

  527. Testament.

  528. The Son of

  529. Man is a

  530. divine

  531. Messiah figure

  532. who comes

  533. with the

  534. angels to

  535. put everything

  536. right that

  537. is wrong

  538. in this

  539. world.

  540. The

  541. Messiah

  542. suffering,

  543. however,

  544. to the

  545. disciples

  546. makes no

  547. sense at

  548. all.

  549. The

  550. Messiah was

  551. supposed to

  552. defeat

  553. evil,

  554. was supposed

  555. to beat

  556. injustice and

  557. make everything

  558. right in the

  559. world.

  560. How could a

  561. Messiah

  562. defeat evil

  563. by suffering,

  564. by dying?

  565. How could

  566. he do that?

  567. Jesus

  568. is explicit.

  569. he is

  570. planning to

  571. die,

  572. not merely

  573. predicting that

  574. he would

  575. die.

  576. This is a

  577. voluntary act

  578. on his

  579. behalf.

  580. Peter is

  581. offended at

  582. this.

  583. It is one

  584. thing for

  585. Jesus to

  586. say,

  587. I'm going

  588. to take

  589. up and

  590. I'm going

  591. to fight

  592. this fight,

  593. the good

  594. fight,

  595. but I

  596. will be

  597. defeated

  598. and die.

  599. And it's

  600. a total

  601. another thing

  602. to say that

  603. in fact the

  604. very reason I

  605. came is to

  606. die.

  607. And the

  608. moment he

  609. says that,

  610. Peter begins

  611. to condemn

  612. Jesus in

  613. the strongest

  614. possible terms.

  615. You see,

  616. ever since

  617. Peter was a

  618. wee lad in

  619. nappies,

  620. he was told

  621. that the

  622. Messiah would

  623. come,

  624. he would

  625. defeat evil

  626. and injustice

  627. and ascend the

  628. throne in

  629. Jerusalem and

  630. to restore the

  631. nation of

  632. Israel to

  633. its heights.

  634. hearts.

  635. And here we

  636. have Jesus

  637. saying that I

  638. am that one,

  639. I am the

  640. Messiah,

  641. I am the

  642. king to

  643. end all

  644. kings,

  645. but I

  646. have not

  647. come to

  648. live and

  649. rule and

  650. reign,

  651. but I've

  652. come to

  653. die.

  654. I have not

  655. come to

  656. take power,

  657. but to

  658. lose it.

  659. I've not

  660. come to

  661. rule,

  662. but to

  663. serve.

  664. And that

  665. is how I'm

  666. going to

  667. defeat evil

  668. and put

  669. everything

  670. right.

  671. Jesus

  672. says he

  673. must

  674. suffer.

  675. Not that

  676. he would

  677. suffer.

  678. And the

  679. word must

  680. there controls

  681. the entire

  682. sentence in

  683. such a way

  684. that everything

  685. in that list

  686. must happen.

  687. Jesus must

  688. suffer.

  689. He must be

  690. rejected.

  691. He must be

  692. killed.

  693. He must be

  694. resurrected.

  695. And all of

  696. those must

  697. must happen

  698. if people

  699. are to be

  700. saved and

  701. the world

  702. is to be

  703. renewed.

  704. Let me

  705. give you

  706. two reasons.

  707. If you're

  708. looking on

  709. your outline,

  710. there's a

  711. personal reason

  712. and there's a

  713. legal reason,

  714. legal necessity

  715. and a personal

  716. necessity as to

  717. why Jesus

  718. must die.

  719. Firstly,

  720. the personal

  721. necessity,

  722. the personal

  723. must.

  724. Now,

  725. we probably

  726. know by

  727. now the

  728. difference

  729. between,

  730. you don't

  731. have to live

  732. long,

  733. the difference

  734. between fake

  735. love and

  736. authentic

  737. love.

  738. In fake

  739. love,

  740. our aim

  741. is to

  742. show some

  743. kind of

  744. love to

  745. another

  746. person in

  747. order to

  748. extract something

  749. from them.

  750. And ultimately,

  751. it's about our

  752. happiness.

  753. That is,

  754. our love is

  755. conditional.

  756. We only

  757. give it

  758. when the

  759. other person

  760. is affirming

  761. us and

  762. meeting our

  763. needs and

  764. filling us

  765. up on the

  766. inside.

  767. Fake love

  768. never allows

  769. itself to be

  770. vulnerable.

  771. You always

  772. have to hold

  773. something back

  774. in case you

  775. need to cut

  776. your losses

  777. and run.

  778. The aim of

  779. authentic love

  780. is to spend

  781. yourself and

  782. use yourself

  783. for the

  784. happiness of

  785. the other

  786. because your

  787. joy is their

  788. joy.

  789. I would

  790. love to

  791. go on a

  792. great

  793. excursus

  794. now about

  795. how the

  796. definition of

  797. marriage,

  798. and I'm not

  799. talking about

  800. same-sex

  801. marriage,

  802. the definition

  803. of marriage

  804. has shifted

  805. in Western

  806. culture to

  807. one where

  808. love is the

  809. primary issue.

  810. Authentic

  811. love is

  812. unconditional.

  813. You give

  814. it whether

  815. your needs

  816. are being

  817. met or

  818. not.

  819. it is

  820. radically

  821. vulnerable.

  822. You spend

  823. everything.

  824. You hold

  825. nothing back.

  826. You give

  827. it away.

  828. The problem

  829. is if you're

  830. sitting there

  831. now and

  832. allowing these

  833. words to

  834. filter down

  835. to a little

  836. depth,

  837. you will

  838. realize that

  839. you are

  840. incapable of

  841. doing that.

  842. That no one

  843. is actually

  844. fully capable

  845. of giving

  846. true love

  847. love.

  848. All the

  849. time.

  850. We

  851. desperately

  852. need it

  853. and want

  854. it, but

  855. nobody can

  856. give it

  857. to us.

  858. Not that we

  859. can't give

  860. any kind

  861. of authentic

  862. love, but

  863. no one is

  864. fully always

  865. capable of

  866. it.

  867. We need to

  868. be loved as

  869. human beings.

  870. Like we need

  871. oxygen and we

  872. need water.

  873. What every

  874. single one of

  875. us needs is

  876. someone to

  877. love us

  878. who doesn't

  879. need our

  880. love back.

  881. Someone who

  882. loves us

  883. radically,

  884. unconditionally,

  885. vulnerably,

  886. and that

  887. person is

  888. Jesus.

  889. At the

  890. baptism of

  891. Jesus,

  892. earlier in

  893. Mark, we

  894. see that the

  895. very essence

  896. of God is

  897. mutual love

  898. relationship,

  899. a relationship

  900. where the

  901. three persons

  902. of the

  903. Trinity have

  904. forever given

  905. to each

  906. other love.

  907. self-giving,

  908. selfless love.

  909. Within

  910. himself, God

  911. has forever

  912. had all the

  913. love, all

  914. the fulfillment,

  915. all the joy

  916. that he could

  917. possibly ever

  918. want.

  919. Which means

  920. that Jesus

  921. does not need

  922. to extract any

  923. more love

  924. from anyone.

  925. He's filled

  926. up.

  927. He lacks

  928. nothing.

  929. The only

  930. way we get

  931. true love

  932. is from

  933. him.

  934. The security

  935. of Jesus'

  936. love enables

  937. us to

  938. need less

  939. and to

  940. love others

  941. more.

  942. True love

  943. actually creates

  944. more true

  945. love.

  946. Jesus

  947. must die

  948. because

  949. without it,

  950. this world

  951. has nothing

  952. to break the

  953. cycle of

  954. destructive,

  955. manipulative,

  956. conditional,

  957. non-vulnerable

  958. love.

  959. Legally,

  960. secondly,

  961. Jesus must

  962. die.

  963. It's a legal

  964. necessity.

  965. When someone

  966. wrongs you,

  967. a debt

  968. is established.

  969. Happens in

  970. all of life,

  971. not just

  972. financially,

  973. emotionally,

  974. psychologically,

  975. a debt is

  976. established.

  977. So for

  978. instance,

  979. if you

  980. got my

  981. phone and

  982. you broke,

  983. it's alright.

  984. If I have my

  985. phone up here

  986. and I held

  987. it up and I

  988. said,

  989. if you broke

  990. my phone,

  991. there are only

  992. two things

  993. that can

  994. happen.

  995. You take

  996. my phone

  997. and you

  998. break it,

  999. two things

  1000. can happen

  1001. at this

  1002. point.

  1003. Either I

  1004. say to

  1005. you that

  1006. will be

  1007. $1,000,

  1008. whatever it

  1009. is, the

  1010. cost of it,

  1011. or I can

  1012. say to

  1013. you, I

  1014. forgive you.

  1015. That's the

  1016. only two

  1017. options you

  1018. got.

  1019. Either you

  1020. pay for

  1021. it,

  1022. or I

  1023. can say

  1024. to you,

  1025. I forgive

  1026. you.

  1027. In the

  1028. first case,

  1029. you pay

  1030. the debt.

  1031. You've

  1032. created the

  1033. wrong, you

  1034. pay the

  1035. debt.

  1036. In the

  1037. second

  1038. instance,

  1039. I pay

  1040. the debt.

  1041. That is,

  1042. the value

  1043. of the

  1044. phone doesn't

  1045. just disappear.

  1046. If I

  1047. choose to

  1048. forgive you,

  1049. absorb you

  1050. of the

  1051. debt,

  1052. then I

  1053. have to

  1054. pay the

  1055. debt.

  1056. Either I

  1057. have to

  1058. buy a

  1059. new phone,

  1060. or I

  1061. have to

  1062. go back

  1063. to pen

  1064. and paper

  1065. and pigeons.

  1066. In one

  1067. way or

  1068. another, I

  1069. absorb the

  1070. debt for

  1071. your wrong

  1072. against me

  1073. if I

  1074. say I

  1075. forgive you.

  1076. And that

  1077. happens on

  1078. all levels

  1079. of life.

  1080. If someone

  1081. robs you

  1082. of an

  1083. opportunity

  1084. or of your

  1085. happiness or

  1086. of your

  1087. reputation or

  1088. something else,

  1089. it creates a

  1090. sense of

  1091. debt,

  1092. relational

  1093. debt.

  1094. Justice has

  1095. been violated

  1096. and a debt

  1097. has been

  1098. accrued and

  1099. there are only

  1100. two options

  1101. in that

  1102. moment.

  1103. You can

  1104. make them

  1105. pay by

  1106. destroying

  1107. their

  1108. opportunities,

  1109. ruining their

  1110. reputation.

  1111. You can hope

  1112. that they

  1113. suffer or

  1114. you can

  1115. ensure that

  1116. they do.

  1117. But there

  1118. is always a

  1119. personal toll

  1120. to that.

  1121. When you're

  1122. making them

  1123. pay off their

  1124. personal debt

  1125. to you by

  1126. suffering,

  1127. you are

  1128. becoming like

  1129. them.

  1130. You are

  1131. doing what

  1132. done to

  1133. you.

  1134. You become

  1135. harder,

  1136. you become

  1137. older,

  1138. colder and

  1139. older,

  1140. and evil

  1141. wins.

  1142. The only

  1143. alternative is

  1144. to forgive,

  1145. but it is

  1146. really hard

  1147. to forgive.

  1148. It is

  1149. agony to

  1150. forgive.

  1151. It is

  1152. agony to

  1153. refrain from

  1154. vengeance.

  1155. It is

  1156. agony because

  1157. you choose

  1158. to absorb

  1159. the cost

  1160. of the

  1161. debt.

  1162. You're not

  1163. trying to

  1164. get your

  1165. reputation

  1166. back by

  1167. tearing down

  1168. their

  1169. reputation.

  1170. True

  1171. forgiveness

  1172. always requires

  1173. suffering.

  1174. Love

  1175. requires

  1176. suffering.

  1177. suffering.

  1178. It is

  1179. a nonsense

  1180. to say,

  1181. why does

  1182. God not

  1183. just go,

  1184. just forget

  1185. about it.

  1186. Debt

  1187. never just

  1188. vanishes.

  1189. Either they

  1190. pay or you

  1191. pay.

  1192. It should

  1193. come as no

  1194. surprise that

  1195. God would

  1196. say the

  1197. only way

  1198. that I

  1199. can forgive

  1200. the sins

  1201. of the

  1202. human race

  1203. against me

  1204. is either

  1205. make them

  1206. pay or I

  1207. pay.

  1208. either

  1209. humanity

  1210. has to

  1211. pay for

  1212. its debt

  1213. of sin

  1214. in rejecting

  1215. me,

  1216. its creator,

  1217. or I

  1218. will.

  1219. The only

  1220. way God

  1221. can pardon

  1222. us and

  1223. not judge

  1224. us is

  1225. to go to

  1226. the cross

  1227. and absorb

  1228. it himself.

  1229. And that's

  1230. why Jesus

  1231. says I

  1232. must suffer

  1233. because if

  1234. I don't,

  1235. you do.

  1236. If I

  1237. don't,

  1238. you do.

  1239. He is

  1240. saying that

  1241. He is

  1242. the King,

  1243. the King,

  1244. but not

  1245. just like

  1246. any King

  1247. you've ever

  1248. imagined.

  1249. He is

  1250. the King

  1251. who must

  1252. die.

  1253. He is

  1254. the King

  1255. who must

  1256. suffer in

  1257. order for

  1258. us to be

  1259. loved and

  1260. forgiven and

  1261. filled up.

  1262. But He

  1263. doesn't stop

  1264. there.

  1265. Following

  1266. Him means

  1267. we die

  1268. too.

  1269. Let's keep

  1270. reading verse

  1271. 34,

  1272. Mark chapter

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  1273. 8.

  1274. Then He

  1275. called the

  1276. crowd to

  1277. Him along

  1278. with His

  1279. disciples and

  1280. said,

  1281. whoever wants

  1282. to be

  1283. my disciple

  1284. must deny

  1285. themselves and

  1286. take up

  1287. their cross

  1288. and follow

  1289. me.

  1290. For whoever

  1291. wants to

  1292. save their

  1293. life will

  1294. lose it,

  1295. but whoever

  1296. loses their

  1297. life for me

  1298. for the

  1299. gospel will

  1300. save it.

  1301. What good

  1302. is it for

  1303. someone to

  1304. gain the

  1305. whole world

  1306. and yet

  1307. forfeit their

  1308. soul?

  1309. Or what

  1310. can anyone

  1311. give in

  1312. exchange for

  1313. their soul?

  1314. What does

  1315. it mean

  1316. for us to

  1317. lose our

  1318. life for the

  1319. gospel in

  1320. order to

  1321. save it?

  1322. The word

  1323. that's

  1324. translated

  1325. life there

  1326. in verse

  1327. 35 is a

  1328. word that

  1329. means your

  1330. identity,

  1331. your personality,

  1332. your selfhood.

  1333. It is the

  1334. things that

  1335. make you

  1336. distinctively

  1337. you.

  1338. Now Jesus

  1339. isn't saying

  1340. there that you

  1341. need to lose

  1342. the things that

  1343. make you

  1344. distinctively

  1345. you.

  1346. You just

  1347. need to lose

  1348. all of who

  1349. you are.

  1350. That would

  1351. make no

  1352. sense whatsoever.

  1353. What he is

  1354. saying is that

  1355. you don't build

  1356. your identity on

  1357. gaining things in

  1358. this world.

  1359. Verse 36,

  1360. what good is it

  1361. for someone to

  1362. gain the whole

  1363. world and yet

  1364. forfeit their

  1365. soul?

  1366. Every single

  1367. culture points

  1368. to the things

  1369. and says that

  1370. if you gain

  1371. those things,

  1372. if you acquire

  1373. those things,

  1374. if you achieve

  1375. those things,

  1376. then you will

  1377. know that you

  1378. are truly valuable,

  1379. that you are

  1380. truly loved.

  1381. You become

  1382. lovable to

  1383. others.

  1384. Traditional

  1385. cultures say

  1386. that we have

  1387. no sense of

  1388. self unless you

  1389. gain the

  1390. respectability and

  1391. the legacy of

  1392. family and

  1393. children.

  1394. Individualistic

  1395. cultures are

  1396. different.

  1397. We say that

  1398. you are a

  1399. nobody unless

  1400. you have a

  1401. fulfilling career

  1402. that brings you

  1403. money, reputation

  1404. and status.

  1405. Either culture

  1406. ultimately says

  1407. the same thing.

  1408. Your identity,

  1409. your sense of

  1410. self-worth is

  1411. based on

  1412. performance.

  1413. It is based on

  1414. your achievements.

  1415. If you perform

  1416. well enough,

  1417. you will find

  1418. the love and

  1419. the approval that

  1420. you crave and

  1421. it will fill you

  1422. up on the

  1423. inside.

  1424. And Jesus

  1425. says, if you

  1426. gain the

  1427. entire world,

  1428. it won't be

  1429. enough.

  1430. No matter

  1431. what you

  1432. achieve,

  1433. no matter

  1434. what you

  1435. gain,

  1436. it's never

  1437. going to be

  1438. enough to

  1439. make you

  1440. sure that

  1441. you know

  1442. who you

  1443. really are.

  1444. If you

  1445. build your

  1446. identity on

  1447. the fact that

  1448. someone loves

  1449. you or you've

  1450. got a good

  1451. career, what

  1452. happens when

  1453. those things

  1454. are gone?

  1455. gone and

  1456. it will

  1457. go.

  1458. Your whole

  1459. sense of

  1460. self is

  1461. gone.

  1462. Speak to

  1463. people who

  1464. have just

  1465. retired.

  1466. God's

  1467. life.

  1468. God's

  1469. life.

  1470. God's

  1471. life.

  1472. God's

  1473. life.

  1474. Jesus did

  1475. not come to

  1476. convince us to

  1477. shift from one

  1478. performance-based

  1479. identity to

  1480. another.

  1481. He wants us to

  1482. lose the old

  1483. self, the old

  1484. identity and

  1485. base our sense of

  1486. worth and value

  1487. and self on

  1488. him, what he's

  1489. achieved for us,

  1490. the good news of

  1491. the gospel.

  1492. Did you notice

  1493. that in verse

  1494. 35?

  1495. For whoever

  1496. wants to save

  1497. their life will

  1498. lose it, but

  1499. whoever loses

  1500. their life for

  1501. me and for

  1502. the gospel will

  1503. save it.

  1504. Foundation of

  1505. Christian

  1506. discipleship is

  1507. the good news

  1508. of Jesus

  1509. Christ.

  1510. It's the

  1511. gospel.

  1512. Christianity

  1513. is not

  1514. performance-based

  1515. except it's

  1516. based on the

  1517. performance of

  1518. Jesus Christ.

  1519. True

  1520. gospel, sorry,

  1521. the gospel is

  1522. not something we

  1523. do.

  1524. It's something

  1525. that God has

  1526. done for us in

  1527. Jesus.

  1528. It is God's

  1529. grace from the

  1530. very time you

  1531. begin to the

  1532. time you end.

  1533. We believe, we

  1534. receive, we live

  1535. as followers of

  1536. Jesus in the

  1537. light of the

  1538. gospel.

  1539. Jesus went to

  1540. the cross and

  1541. on the cross he

  1542. lost his identity

  1543. so to speak so

  1544. that we can have

  1545. one.

  1546. Once we see that

  1547. the Son of God

  1548. doing that for us,

  1549. loving us like

  1550. that, we begin to

  1551. get a strength and

  1552. assurance and

  1553. identity that sets

  1554. us free from our

  1555. culture's identities.

  1556. But no, Peter

  1557. here when he

  1558. hears these words

  1559. from Jesus is

  1560. furious.

  1561. He is furious

  1562. with Jesus because

  1563. Jesus' suffering is

  1564. not part of Peter's

  1565. agenda.

  1566. His agenda led

  1567. from strength to

  1568. strength and it

  1569. did not include

  1570. suffering.

  1571. suffering.

  1572. And that

  1573. unfortunately is

  1574. one of the major

  1575. undercurrents of

  1576. discipleship in the

  1577. Western world.

  1578. We relate to Jesus

  1579. in exactly the same

  1580. way.

  1581. We have our agenda,

  1582. we have our goal,

  1583. we have our visions

1584. for our lives and we

  1585. think that it's good

1586. to have God on our

  1587. side.

  1588. Jesus' job is to

  1589. get me established

  1590. well in life,

  1591. to give me the

  1592. things that are the

  1593. desires of my

  1594. heart.

  1595. What Christian

  1596. discipleship says

1597. that if we have an

  1598. end and Jesus is

  1599. the means by

  1600. achieving that

  1601. end, then we

  1602. are using

  1603. him.

  1604. It is just

  1605. another form of

  1606. conditional love

1607. and it will leave us

  1608. empty.

  1609. if we try to

  1610. negotiate with

  1611. all will obey

  1612. you if we're

  1613. not seeing him

  1614. as a king.

  1615. If Jesus is the

  1616. king to end all

  1617. kings, then you

  1618. cannot come to

  1619. hear this king

  1620. negotiating your

  1621. terms.

  1622. We lay down our

  1623. weapons at his

  1624. feet.

  1625. It's essential that

  1626. we see Jesus Christ

  1627. as king on the

  1628. cross.

  1629. If we just

  1630. simply see him

  1631. as king,

  1632. then we'll

  1633. obey him because

  1634. we have to obey

  1635. him.

  1636. but he's the

  1637. king who went

  1638. to the cross

  1639. for us and

  1640. therefore we can

  1641. submit to him

  1642. our love and

  1643. trust.

  1644. He's a good

  1645. king.

  1646. Instead of

  1647. negotiating, we

  1648. simply say,

  1649. Lord, whatever

  1650. you ask, I

  1651. will do.

  1652. And whatever

  1653. you send, I

  1654. will accept.

  1655. If he has

  1656. utterly given

  1657. himself to us,

  1658. how can we

  1659. not give

  1660. ourselves utterly

  1661. to him?

  1662. Taking up our

  1663. cross means that

  1664. we die to

  1665. self-determination,

  1666. we die to

  1667. self-control,

  1668. sorry, we

  1669. die to control

  1670. of ourselves,

  1671. over our

  1672. lives, and

  1673. we die to

  1674. using him to

  1675. achieve our

  1676. agendas in

  1677. life.

  1678. I love the

  1679. way C.S.

  1680. Lewis closes

  1681. out his book,

  1682. Mere

  1683. Christianity,

  1684. as he

  1685. describes the

  1686. life of the

  1687. disciple.

  1688. give up

  1689. yourself, and

  1690. you will find

  1691. your real

  1692. self.

  1693. Lose your

  1694. life, and

  1695. you will save

  1696. it.

  1697. Submit to

  1698. death, the

  1699. death of your

  1700. ambitions and

  1701. favorite wishes

  1702. every day, and

  1703. the death of your

  1704. whole body in the

  1705. end.

  1706. Submit with

  1707. every fiber of

  1708. your being, and

  1709. you will find

  1710. eternal life.

  1711. Keep back

  1712. nothing.

  1713. Nothing that

  1714. you have not

  1715. given away is

  1716. in fact really

  1717. yours.

  1718. Nothing in

  1719. you that has

  1720. not died will

  1721. ever be raised

  1722. from the dead.

  1723. Look out for

  1724. yourself, and

  1725. you will find in

  1726. the long run

  1727. only hatred,

  1728. loneliness,

  1729. despair, rage,

  1730. ruin, and

  1731. decay.

  1732. But look to

  1733. Christ, and

  1734. you will find

  1735. him, and

  1736. with him

  1737. everything else

  1738. thrown in.

  1739. The call of

  1740. Jesus on our

  1741. lives, if I

  1742. might use the

  1743. metaphor again,

  1744. is that the

  1745. dust of Jesus

  1746. covers every

  1747. single aspect

  1748. of our being.

  1749. no part is

  1750. untouched by

  1751. him.

  1752. And as we

  1753. journey through

  1754. this term, I

  1755. want to ask

  1756. you to ask

  1757. him specifically,

  1758. Jesus, are

  1759. there any

  1760. parts in my

  1761. life that

  1762. are not

  1763. covered by

  1764. your dust,

  1765. and by your

  1766. grace, enable

  1767. me to surrender

  1768. it to you?

  1769. Amen.

  1770. Amen.
