  1. Good morning, everyone. If you've just joined us for the first time here at St. Paul's,

  2. this is our third week into launching our strategic plan for the next five years, Follow

  3. 25. We're particularly concerned in this series of what it means to be a follower of Jesus,

  4. what it means to follow Jesus in all of life and for all of life. And I should let you

  5. know. You've probably received it in the notifications throughout the email through

  6. the course this week. We lost one of our dear sisters this week, Betty Shearman, who hasn't

  7. been amongst us the last couple of years because of age issues and needing special care, passed

  8. away on Wednesday. She was 99. Someone who followed Jesus, much loved amongst us, someone who trusted

  9. in Jesus and particularly was committed to a very committed devotional life that saw her express

  10. the living relationship with Jesus right to the end and in such a way that had an impact

  11. upon several generations. So at some point in the near future, all details are yet to be

  12. finalised. We will have a Thanksgiving service for Betty here in the next, probably in the next

  13. couple of weeks, but keep your eye out and we'll bring that to you. As we launched in

  14. this series, the first thing we discovered was that being a Christian means that you are

  15. in fact a follower of Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour of all. A Christian is a disciple.

  16. They're a follower of Jesus who learns from him, who submits to his teaching and becomes like

  17. him in all of life. And we saw last week that the foundation, sorry, before that, a couple

  18. weeks ago. The foundation of this relationship is the gospel. It is the good news that Jesus

  19. himself has absorbed God's punishment for our sin in us choosing to walk a different path

  20. in life, determining our own journey, rejecting God, our creator. And Jesus went to the cross.

  21. He died our death. He paid our debt. He turned God's anger away from us and has set us free

  22. to live a new life, the life that we were created for in the beginning. And that is in fact to live

  23. in obedience to our God who loves us infinitely and created us. So Christian discipleship is a

  24. lifelong journey of following Jesus and impacts every aspect of your life. It's not just something

  25. that you leave for Sundays. It changes your entire worldview of all things.

  26. So if we're going to follow well, and if we're going to keep following until this journey's

  27. end, God has given us resources for that. We need to take up those resources. And then last

  28. week we looked at the Bible and prayer. Today we're focusing on the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  29. And I've got two things really to say, and that is, first of all, who is the Holy Spirit? And secondly,

  30. what does it mean to live with the Holy Spirit? So if you've got the St. Paul's app open,

  31. that'd be great. If not, create your own app with paper and pen, and you can take some notes as we

  32. go through. So first of all, who is the Holy Spirit? We've touched on this on at least two

  33. occasions already in this series. We're going to do it again today. There's one aspect of the Bible's

  34. teaching. I mean, in fact, there's many aspects of Bible teaching which are difficult. It shouldn't

  35. surprise us because God is so huge and magnificent, bigger and greater than any of our minds could

  36. fully comprehend. So he has to be bigger than us. Otherwise, he's no more than us, and that makes

  37. him a pretty weak God. One of the difficult things, one of the challenging areas is the doctrine of the

  38. Trinity. We sang about it this morning. The Trinity calls us to believe that there is one and only one

  39. God. To know the one true God is, however, to know him as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father, Son, and

  40. Holy Spirit, each is fully God, always and forever. So the Trinity functions kind of like an orchestra,

  41. where you have a multitude of different instruments and coming together at the right time in a rich

  42. harmony that any individual instrument wouldn't be able to do by itself. That is, the diversity

  43. of an orchestra is more beautiful sound than if the whole orchestra was just made up of cymbals.

  44. It's just a clanging noise. Each person of the Trinity does its own distinctive work. They work in

  45. harmony with each other as each person fulfills the work, the overall work that is right and good for

  46. that member of the Trinity to do. And yet all three persons of the Trinity are committed to the one

  47. work of God. They contribute to the one work of God. And so the Holy Spirit is equally God,

  48. that is equally God, same as God the Father and God the Son is God. That's the first point. The Holy Spirit

  49. is not some lesser thing than God. For example, in Acts chapter 5, Peter rebukes Ananias for lying to

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  50. the Holy Spirit about the land that he had sold. And then Peter says, you have not lied to men,

  51. but to God. So when he lied to the Holy Spirit, he is lying to God. We also note the Holy Spirit are

  52. certain qualities that are only true of God in the Bible, such as living forever and eternally,

  53. according to Hebrews 9, and being everywhere, according to Psalm 139, and having all knowledge

  54. in 1 Corinthians 2.10. He's also declared to be equal with the Father and the Son in Matthew 28

  55. and 2 Corinthians 13. So that's the first thing. I want to be clear. The Holy Spirit is equally God,

  56. as the Father and Son is equally God. But secondly, the Holy Spirit is a person, not a force. The Holy

  57. Spirit is a divine person, as the Father and Son are divine persons. So in John 14, just read out to us,

  58. verse 16, Jesus calls him another counselor. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you

  59. another counselor, another advocate to be with you forever, the Spirit of truth. So when Jesus calls

  60. him another advocate or comforter or counselor, he treats him as a person, not as a force.

  61. When he calls him another, he means another like me. The Holy Spirit is an advocate.

  62. Like Jesus is. He is a person. We also know the Holy Spirit is a person because he shows the

  63. qualities of true personhood, a genuine personhood. For example, Holy Spirit can be lied to,

  64. as we just read in Acts 5, insulted according to Hebrews 10. And there are two things you cannot do

  65. to the electricity that's making your refrigerator work. You can't insult electricity, a force.

  66. The Holy Spirit also has personal qualities, like a mind, according to 1 Corinthians 2, emotions,

  67. according to Ephesians 4, and a will, according to 1 Corinthians 12.

  68. But possibly the most important aspect, the most important aspect of the personhood of the Holy Spirit

  69. is that 94 times in the New Testament, he is called holy. He has the character of holiness,

  70. which along with having emotions and will can only ever be true of someone with personhood.

  71. And so the Holy Spirit is person and divine, divine person. And so when you add the second truth about the Holy Spirit,

  72. the first bit becomes even more precious. It will make an enormous difference in your life.

  73. If you believe that you are being led, changed, transformed by a person who is in their very essence,

  74. the personal God of love and not an impersonal force. It makes a world of difference as you live the Christian life day by day.

  75. The person who leads and purifies is no one less than God, the Holy Spirit.

  76. This is a personal relationship of love. This is not a force connecting you to God.

  77. So there's a lot more that can be said about the Holy Spirit and masses of books have been written on this.

  78. But I want to jump to what does it mean for us to live with the Holy Spirit.

  79. Now for too many Christians, the Holy Spirit has either faded into the background somewhere

  80. to be almost non-existent in their life,

  81. or he's been brought to the forefront in such a way that he dominates the Trinity and all things about God.

  82. Either ends of the spectrum are deficient.

  83. For too many of us, the Holy Spirit doesn't factor enough in our discipleship.

  84. So therefore, what does it mean to live with the Holy Spirit?

  85. In the John reading, we see something very significant about our relationship with the Holy Spirit.

  86. John chapters 14 to 17 are known as the farewell discourse.

    John 14 chapter mention

  87. As Jesus is here farewelling his disciples, he's about to depart back to the Father via the cross.

  88. And he's going to die and he's going to leave his disciples.

  89. And they are distraught by this news.

  90. They are confused.

  91. It was uncertain times.

  92. Their world is falling apart.

  93. We thought that Jesus was the one who would ascend the throne in Jerusalem

  94. and make all things right that are wrong and beat up the Romans and all that kind of stuff.

  95. And so Jesus comforts his disciples by telling them,

  96. Yes, I am departing.

  97. And I am departing to prepare an eternal place for them in the Father's house.

  98. It is fantastic news.

  99. Fantastic news.

  100. That some rooms are getting ready,

  101. but it would feel so distant and unknown for them.

  102. What about now?

  103. What about now?

  104. Are we going to be left abandoned in the meantime?

  105. And that's when Jesus says,

  106. I will send a permanent resident.

  107. Chapter 14, verse 16.

  108. Jesus tells him,

  109. I will ask the Father and he will give you another advocate to be with you forever.

  110. One who will never depart.

  111. The spirit of truth.

  112. So Jesus says to his grieving disciples,

  113. I am going to the Father and I will send you another advocate.

  114. Another, meaning one of the same kind.

  115. Another, in verse 16,

  116. is going to be with them forever

  117. and he will not depart as Jesus must depart.

  118. Now this is exactly what the grieving disciples need in this moment.

  119. When they're feeling abandoned.

  120. Or is it?

  121. Is it really?

  122. Is this really a comfort to these disciples?

  123. Now, not that we actually can at the moment,

  124. but imagine if Nat and I were about to go on a long trip.

  125. And we didn't know,

  126. it was a one-way ticket,

  127. we didn't know exactly when we'd be coming back.

  128. And we sat down our three girls

  129. and said to them,

  130. we're going away on a trip,

  131. not sure when we're going to come back,

  132. but it's okay.

  133. We've organised for an uncle

  134. who you've never met,

  135. ever,

  136. to come and look after you in the meantime.

  137. Oh, that's the comfort we needed.

  138. We haven't gotten over the first bit.

  139. But I think verse 23 reveals the staggering implications of verse 16.

  140. If anyone loves me,

  141. he will obey my teaching,

  142. my father will love him,

  143. and we will come to him

  144. and make our home with him.

  145. Now, let me just unpack this a little bit

  146. and get a bit technical for you.

  147. This is very, very important.

  148. Notice the word home in verse 23.

  149. It is a very rare word

  150. in the original language in the New Testament.

  151. In fact,

  152. it is used in only one other place

  153. in the entire New Testament.

  154. One other place.

  155. And it's in chapter 14, verse 2,

  156. where it is translated rooms.

  157. In verse 2,

  158. Jesus says that by going to the cross,

  159. he is preparing a room,

  160. a dwelling place,

  161. an eternal dwelling place

  162. in the perfection of relationship with the Father,

  163. with God forever.

  164. But in verse 23,

  165. Jesus says that by going to the cross,

  166. I'm not just preparing a room

  167. with the Father in the future,

  168. but I'm going to prepare in us.

  169. He is going to prepare in us

  170. a home,

  171. a dwelling place,

  172. a room for his Father

  173. to dwell with us.

  174. The departure of Jesus

  175. to his Father

  176. via the cross

  177. is going to prepare two things,

  178. a room for us

  179. with the Father and the Son

  180. and the Spirit

  181. in heaven forever,

  182. and a room for the Father

  183. and Jesus

  184. with the Spirit

  185. with us

  186. now on earth.

  187. What a promise.

  188. Not just a place for us

  189. we've got at some point

  190. in the future.

  191. That is,

  192. the promises

  193. of the Christian faith

  194. is not just pie in the sky

  195. when you die,

  196. but it's now.

  197. For God's presence

  198. with us

  199. now.

  200. The coming of the Spirit

  201. doesn't replace

  202. the presence of Jesus.

  203. It guarantees

  204. the presence of Jesus

  205. with us

  206. now.

  207. The Holy Spirit

  208. unites us with Christ

  209. and the Father.

  210. Jesus is not distant.

  211. He has not abandoned

  212. his disciples.

  213. I think Jesus

  214. is actually saying

  215. to his bewildered

  216. disciples

  217. in this moment,

  218. guys,

  219. you've got to understand

  220. it will be better

  221. for you

  222. when I depart.

  223. My presence

  224. will be

  225. stronger.

  226. Jesus promised

  227. not just to

  228. leave us as orphans

  229. to do our best

  230. to survive,

  231. to pull up our socks

  232. and work really hard

  233. on this journey

  234. of discipleship

  235. just to,

  236. he has not left us

  237. to our own devices.

  238. The promise

  239. to his first disciples

  240. extends to us.

  241. He added eternal

  242. words of comfort

  243. in saying

  244. that the Spirit

  245. will come

  246. not just dwelling

  247. with us,

  248. not just walking

  249. beside us,

  250. but dwelling

  251. in the disciples

  252. of Jesus.

  253. The intimacy

  254. of the disciple

  255. of Jesus

  256. and the Holy Spirit

  257. is captured

  258. in the word

  259. abiding.

  260. Abiding.

  261. The Holy Spirit,

  262. the third member

  263. of the Trinity,

  264. abides

  265. in you

  266. and me

  267. in his church

  268. in all

  269. who belong

  270. to Jesus Christ

  271. by faith.

  272. The Holy Spirit,

  273. his abiding

  274. restores

  275. all hope

  276. and secures

  277. us

  278. on the

  279. sure

  280. foundation

  281. of faith

  282. in uncertain

  283. times

  284. as we

  285. trust

  286. in the

  287. promises

  288. of God

  289. in Jesus.

  290. So the Holy Spirit

  291. explains

  292. how the church

  293. survives

  294. and how the gospel

  295. continues to spread

  296. to the ends

  297. of the earth

  298. even when all

  299. else is collapsing

  300. around.

  301. The Holy Spirit

  302. abiding

  303. in us

  304. explains

  305. how the

  306. disciple

  307. of the Lord

  308. Jesus

  309. can hear

  310. the words

  311. of the Bible,

  312. can hear

  313. the gospel

  314. not as the

  315. words of merely

  316. a human philosopher,

  317. not just the

  318. opinions of

  319. other human

  320. beings,

  321. but as the

  322. word of God

  323. revealing truth

  324. and reality.

  325. The Holy Spirit

  326. is the difference

  327. from darkness

  328. to light.

  329. The Holy Spirit

  330. is the difference

  331. between you

  332. reading this

  333. as being

  334. black ink

  335. on white paper

  336. and it being

  337. the very word

  338. of God.

  339. The creator

  340. of the universe

  341. speaking to you.

  342. The Holy Spirit

  343. abiding in us

  344. is the reason

  345. why the

  346. disciples of Jesus

  347. have life

  348. in the face

  349. of death.

  350. The Spirit

  351. does not flee

  352. when we are

  353. struggling with sin.

  354. His presence

  355. does not hinge

  356. upon our

  357. obedience

  358. and our

  359. effort.

  360. His abiding

  361. in the Christian

  362. rests upon

  363. the infinite

  364. grace

  365. and the love

  366. of God

  367. out for us.

  368. So then,

  369. how do we

  370. get the

  371. experience,

  372. how do we

  373. get to

  374. experience

  375. this presence

  376. of the Holy

  377. Spirit right

  378. now?

  379. especially

  380. when we

  381. at times

  382. may not

  383. feel like

  384. it?

  385. And crucial

  386. to this,

  387. last week

  388. we talked

  389. about

  390. absolutely

  391. essential

  392. for the

  393. Christian

  394. life

  395. is

  396. word and

  397. prayer.

  398. How does

  399. the word

  400. and prayer,

  401. devotional

  402. life,

  403. not just

  404. become

  405. about a

  406. regulation,

  407. a rule,

  408. a duty

  409. that must

  410. be performed,

  411. a dry

  412. activity that

  413. makes no

  414. difference in

  415. my life?

  416. What's the

  417. difference?

  418. difference

  419. between the

  420. legalist

  421. who's doing

  422. more than

  423. four and

  424. not really

  425. moving forward?

  426. What makes

  427. the difference?

  428. The Holy

  429. Spirit is

  430. the difference.

  431. In John

  432. chapter,

  433. that is,

  434. it's crucial

  435. to listen

  436. to the

  437. Holy Spirit.

  438. John

    John 16:13

  439. chapter 16

  440. verse 13,

  441. we get a

  442. key part of

  443. the Spirit's

  444. work.

  445. book,

  446. but when

  447. he,

  448. the Spirit

  449. of truth,

  450. comes,

  451. he will

  452. guide you

  453. into all

  454. truth.

  455. He will

  456. not speak

  457. on his

  458. own.

  459. He will

  460. speak only

  461. what he

  462. hears,

  463. and he

  464. will tell

  465. you what

  466. is yet

  467. to come.

  468. So in

  469. chapter 14,

  470. Jesus

  471. promised that

  472. the Spirit

  473. of truth

  474. will remind

  475. the disciples

  476. of everything

  477. that Jesus

  478. taught them.

  479. Now,

  480. he promises

  481. something a

  482. little bit

  483. more than

  484. that.

  485. The 11

  486. disciples will

  487. be led

  488. into truth,

  489. into a

  490. true understanding

  491. of all the

  492. saving events

  493. which are

  494. about to

  495. take place

  496. about the

  497. death and

  498. the resurrection

  499. of Jesus,

  500. and they'll

  501. be given

  502. glimpses of

  503. the future,

  504. of this

  505. final work

  506. being

  507. played out.

  508. The final

  509. climax, if

  510. you like,

  511. of world

  512. history will

  513. partially be

  514. unveiled to

  515. them so

  516. that they'll

  517. be able to

  518. get a glimpse

  519. of the

  520. sweep of

  521. God's

  522. enormous plan

  523. of salvation

  524. and the

  525. central part

  526. that Jesus

  527. plays in

  528. that with

  529. his death

  530. and his

  531. resurrection.

  532. But in

  533. leading them

  534. into truth,

  535. the Holy

  536. Spirit will

  537. not speak

  538. on his

  539. own,

  540. Jesus

  541. insists.

  542. He will

  543. speak only

  544. what he

  545. hears.

  546. In

  547. John

  548. 16,

  549. 13 to

  550. 15,

  551. but when

  552. he, the

  553. spirit truth

  554. comes, he

  555. will guide

  556. you into

  557. all truth,

  558. he will

  559. not speak

  560. on his

  561. own, he

  562. will speak

  563. only what

  564. he hears

  565. and he

  566. will tell

  567. you what

  568. is here

  569. to come.

  570. He will

  571. bring glory

  572. to me

  573. by taking

  574. from what

  575. is mine

  576. and making

  577. it known

  578. to you.

  579. All that

  580. belongs to

  581. the Father

  582. is mine,

  583. that is

  584. why I

  585. said the

  586. spirit will

  587. take from

  588. what is

  589. mine and

  590. make it

  591. known to

  592. you.

  593. So the

  594. general

  595. subject matter

  596. of the

  597. Holy Spirit,

  598. it's saying

  599. there in

  600. John 16,

  601. is restricted.

  602. It's a

  603. glorious

  604. restriction.

  605. salvation.

  606. The spirit

  607. will take

  608. that which

  609. is Jesus'

  610. and make

  611. it known

  612. to the

  613. disciples of

  614. Jesus.

  615. The focus

  616. is entirely

  617. on Jesus.

  618. The role

  619. of the Holy

  620. Spirit is to

  621. bring glory

  622. to Jesus.

  623. It was

  624. necessary for

  625. Jesus to be

  626. glorified by

  627. returning to

  628. the Father

  629. via the

  630. cross,

  631. but when

  632. he leaves,

  633. he receives

  634. more glory

  635. through the

  636. ministry of the

  637. Spirit to

  638. his disciples.

  639. As Jesus

  640. took that

  641. which belonged

  642. to the

  643. Father and

  644. made it known

  645. to them,

  646. to his

  647. disciples,

  648. so the

  649. Spirit takes

  650. that which

  651. belongs to

  652. Jesus and

  653. makes it

  654. known to

  655. us.

  656. Nothing

  657. brings more

  658. glory to

  659. our Lord

  660. Jesus than

  661. for his

  662. followers to

  663. become steeped

  664. in all

  665. truth concerning

  666. him.

  667. Jesus

  668. prays for

  669. his disciples

  670. one chapter

  671. later,

  672. that they

  673. would be led

  674. into that

  675. truth,

  676. and then

  677. he prays

  678. for the

  679. disciples who

  680. come to

  681. the truth

  682. because of

  683. his original

  684. disciples being

  685. led into the

  686. truth.

  687. What does

  688. that mean

  689. for us?

  690. The

  691. acquisition of

  692. this truth

  693. of God is

  694. intellectual,

  695. but it's not

  696. merely intellectual.

  697. As this

  698. truth is

  699. truly absorbed

  700. by the

  701. followers of

  702. the Lord

  703. Jesus,

  704. it transforms

  705. them,

  706. it enables

  707. them to

  708. reflect the

  709. glory of

  710. the Lord

  711. Jesus,

  712. and thereby

  713. being praised

  714. to his

  715. name.

  716. That is,

  717. his priorities

  718. become our

  719. priorities,

  720. his character

  721. our character.

  722. Glory comes

  723. to Jesus

  724. when the

  725. truths

  726. that the

  727. original

  728. disciples

  729. recorded

  730. become

  731. truths

  732. for us.

  733. glory comes

  734. to Jesus

  735. when the

  736. truths of the

  737. gospel,

  738. the word of

  739. God,

  740. are established

  741. in our

  742. lives.

  743. Up until

  744. this point,

  745. the disciples

  746. have been

  747. quite confused,

  748. have been

  749. characterized by

  750. misunderstanding as

  751. the person of

  752. Jesus.

  753. All of this

  754. is going to

  755. change with

  756. the arrival

  757. of the

  758. Holy Spirit

  759. on the day

  760. of Pentecost.

  761. The Spirit

  762. would ensure

  763. that these

  764. original

  765. disciples

  766. would not

  767. forget Jesus,

  768. would not

  769. forget what

  770. he said to

  771. them.

  772. He would

  773. ensure that

  774. they accurately

  775. remembered

  776. everything,

  777. his life,

  778. his commandments,

  779. his teachings,

  780. everything.

  781. So how

  782. does that

  783. happen for

  784. us then?

  785. I think

  786. that one

  787. main answer

  788. comes from

  789. Ephesians

    Ephesians 5:18

  790. chapter 5

  791. verse 18

  792. which may

  793. come up on

  794. the screen

  795. in a moment.

  796. This is

  797. where Paul

  798. teaches

  799. believers to

  800. be filled

  801. with the

  802. Spirit so

  803. that their

  804. thoughts,

  805. their attitudes,

  806. their words,

  807. their actions

  808. would be

  809. directed by

  810. the Spirit.

  811. That is,

  812. Paul's command

  813. is to be

  814. filled with

  815. the Spirit

  816. in Ephesians

  817. 5 18

  818. is not a

  819. one-off

  820. event when

  821. someone first

  822. comes to

  823. faith in

  824. the Lord

  825. Jesus.

  826. It is also

  827. not what

  828. some might

  829. claim a

  830. reference to

  831. some sort

  832. of second

  833. blessing

  834. reserved for

  835. serious

  836. disciples of

  837. Jesus,

  838. often referred

  839. to as a

  840. baptism of

  841. the Holy

  842. Spirit.

  843. Ephesians

  844. 5 18

  845. is what

  846. scholars call

  847. an imperative

  848. in the

  849. present tense

  850. which means

  851. the command

  852. here in

  853. 5 18

  854. is to

  855. constantly be

  856. filled with

  857. the Holy

  858. Spirit,

  859. a continuing

  860. experience

  861. and to be

  862. filled implies

  863. something total,

  864. completely filled,

  865. that is the

  866. Spirit has

  867. full control

  868. over all

  869. aspects of

  870. your life,

  871. no area

  872. of life

  873. is off

  874. limits to

  875. the work

  876. of the

  877. Spirit in

  878. your life.

  879. Andreas

  880. Kostenberg in

  881. his book,

  882. What Does

  883. It Mean

  884. To Be

  885. Filled

  886. With

  887. the Spirit

  888. says that

  889. it is

  890. something

  891. that God

  892. does.

  893. So while

  894. it's a

  895. command in

  896. Ephesians

  897. 5 18,

  898. it is a

  899. passive

  900. command,

  901. be

  902. filled.

  903. We are

  904. to respond

  905. to the

  906. command,

  907. but it

  908. is something

  909. that primarily

  910. that God

  911. does in

  912. us.

  913. Paul also

  914. wrote a

  915. parallel

  916. passage to

  917. Ephesians

  918. 5 and

  919. it's

  920. Colossians

  921. 3 16

  922. and 17

  923. and they

  924. are almost

  925. interchangeable,

  926. different language

  927. but almost

  928. interchangeable.

  929. The structure

  930. is exactly

  931. the same.

  932. Let the

  933. word of

  934. Christ dwell

  935. in you

  936. richly,

  937. teaching and

  938. admonish one

  939. another in

  940. all wisdom,

  941. singing psalms

  942. and hymns and

  943. spiritual songs

  944. with thankfulness

  945. in your heart

  946. to God.

  947. And whatever

  948. you do in

  949. word or

  950. deed,

  951. do everything

  952. in the name

  953. of the Lord

  954. Jesus Christ,

  955. giving thanks

  956. to God the

  957. Father through

  958. him.

  959. In both

  960. passages,

  961. Ephesians

  962. 5,

  963. Colossians

  964. 3,

  965. the results

  966. are the

  967. same.

  968. Words

  969. and deeds

  970. that honour

  971. Christ,

  972. bring glory

  973. to Christ.

  974. But what

  975. brings about

  976. the results

  977. are stated

  978. differently in

  979. both passages.

  980. In Ephesians

  981. 5,

  982. Paul says,

  983. be filled

  984. with the

  985. Spirit.

  986. In Colossians

  987. 3,

  988. he says,

  989. let the

  990. word of

  991. Christ dwell

  992. in you

  993. richly.

  994. What this

  995. means is

  996. that the

  997. Spirit has

  998. greater influence,

  999. provides us

  1000. with more

  1001. direction in

  1002. life,

  1003. more comfort

  1004. as his

  1005. disciples,

  1006. more enabling

  1007. as his

  1008. disciples,

  1009. provided

  1010. that

  1011. God's

  1012. word dwells

  1013. more and

  1014. more within

  1015. us.

  1016. That is,

  1017. it is

  1018. impossible,

  1019. both in

  1020. Old Testament

  1021. and New

  1022. Testament,

  1023. to separate

  1024. the word

  1025. from the

  1026. Spirit.

  1027. Our reading

  1028. of the

  1029. word,

  1030. our time

  1031. spent memorizing

  1032. and meditating

  1033. on Scripture

  1034. is the

  1035. main tool

  1036. that the

  1037. Spirit of

  1038. God uses

  1039. to help

  1040. us to

  1041. think,

  1042. feel,

  1043. speak,

  1044. and act

  1045. in ways

  1046. that are

  1047. more and

  1048. more glorifying

  1049. to the

  1050. Lord Jesus,

  1051. which is

  1052. why you

  1053. were saved.

  1054. You see,

  1055. the goal of

  1056. all biblical

  1057. learning is

  1058. knowing God.

  1059. the Holy

  1060. Spirit is

  1061. absolutely

  1062. essential to

  1063. this process.

  1064. The Holy

  1065. Spirit enables

  1066. us not

  1067. just to

  1068. see the

  1069. facts of

  1070. the Lord

  1071. Jesus Christ

  1072. and the

  1073. gospel and

  1074. the word of

  1075. God,

  1076. he helps

  1077. us to

  1078. see the

  1079. glory and

  1080. the beauty

  1081. and the

  1082. worth and

  1083. the magnificence

  1084. of all of

  1085. that truth.

  1086. He convicts

  1087. us of the

  1088. necessary

  1089. submission and

  1090. transformation and

  1091. repentance of

  1092. sin and

  1093. obedience to

  1094. Christ that

  1095. follows.

  1096. And so

  1097. listening to

  1098. the Spirit

  1099. in the

  1100. word is

  1101. so, so

  1102. crucial for

  1103. the Christian.

  1104. But so is

  1105. speaking.

  1106. So is

  1107. speaking.

  1108. See, I would

  1109. further suggest

  1110. that we pray

  1111. for God to

  1112. fill us with

  1113. his Spirit as

  1114. we engage with

  1115. him in his

  1116. word.

  1117. That is, our

  1118. engagement with

  1119. God in his

  1120. word,

  1121. prayerfully,

  1122. is encountering

  1123. God's presence.

  1124. And if you

  1125. want to know

  1126. more about

  1127. that, Tim

  1128. Keller's

  1129. written a

  1130. great book

  1131. on prayer and

  1132. there's a

  1133. great section

  1134. on what it

  1135. means to

  1136. encounter God

  1137. in his

  1138. word and

  1139. prayer.

  1140. Paul doesn't

  1141. explicitly command

  1142. anywhere that

  1143. we pray for the

  1144. filling of the

  1145. Holy Spirit,

  1146. but he

  1147. himself does

  1148. it that God

  1149. would in fact

  1150. give us the

  1151. spirit of

  1152. revelation and

  1153. wisdom in

  1154. Ephesians 1.

  1155. Also, that

  1156. we would be

  1157. strengthened in

  1158. our inner being

  1159. by the Spirit

  1160. in Ephesians 3.

  1161. Pray that God's

  1162. Spirit will fill you

  1163. day by day as

  1164. you are filled

  1165. with his word.

  1166. The Holy Spirit

  1167. working through

  1168. the word of God,

  1169. the Bible,

  1170. is how the

  1171. word of God,

  1172. Jesus Christ,

  1173. is present and

  1174. active in our

  1175. daily life and

  1176. works in his

  1177. world right now.

  1178. That's how it

  1179. happens.

  1180. The Holy Spirit

  1181. is essential

  1182. for that work.

  1183. The late

  1184. theologian Jim

  1185. Packer puts the

  1186. importance of the

  1187. Spirit of God for

  1188. the Christian

  1189. disciple like

  1190. this.

  1191. If you neglect

  1192. the Spirit,

  1193. you lose your

  1194. focus on the

  1195. fellowship with

  1196. Christ that he

  1197. creates.

  1198. The renewal of

  1199. character that he

  1200. affects.

  1201. The assurance and

  1202. the joy that he

  1203. evokes and the

  1204. enabling of service

  1205. that he bestows.

  1206. Packer then goes

  1207. on to the

  1208. effects of the

  1209. person who ignores

  1210. the work of the

  1211. Spirit in their

  1212. life.

1213. And this may be a

  1214. rebuke, so please

  1215. hear these words

  1216. from Packer.

  1217. You slip back

  1218. into orthodoxism

  1219. and formalism,

  1220. getting stuck in a

  1221. religion of

  1222. aspiration and

  1223. perspiration

  1224. without either

  1225. inspiration or

  1226. transformation.

  1227. The religion of

  1228. low expectations,

  1229. deep ruts and

  1230. grooves that

  1231. become in the

  1232. end graves.

  1233. Our key

  1234. objective for the

  1235. next five years

  1236. is to see 65%

  1237. of St.

  1238. Paul's identifying

  1239. much growth in

  1240. the faith.

  1241. As I said last

  1242. week, a devotional

  1243. life of more than

  1244. four a week is

  1245. absolutely essential

  1246. to that growth.

  1247. That is,

  1248. without that,

  1249. how on earth

  1250. is God going to

  1251. mediate his

  1252. presence in your

  1253. life.

  1254. He has given

  1255. you a resource

  1256. that he might

  1257. dwell with you

  1258. day by day in

  1259. all the complexity

  1260. of life.

  1261. But these

  1262. objectives are

  1263. not about you

  1264. pulling up your

  1265. socks and sweating

  1266. a lot harder,

  1267. a bit more

  1268. perspiration, a bit

  1269. more effort.

  1270. They are about

  1271. bringing you to a

1272. point and us as a

  1273. point as a church

  1274. to say, we

  1275. cannot do this

  1276. by ourselves.

  1277. It should force

  1278. us back into

  1279. every moment of

  1280. every day of

  1281. total reliance

  1282. upon the Holy

  1283. Spirit.

  1284. Spirit.

  1285. And so what a

  1286. resource that we

  1287. have as disciples

  1288. of Jesus.

  1289. He has not

  1290. left us.

  1291. He's not just

  1292. giving us a

  1293. promise that one

  1294. day when you

  1295. die, there will

  1296. be some great

  1297. future for you.

  1298. He gives you a

  1299. promise now, the

  1300. future's now.

  1301. He gives you his

  1302. presence now.

  1303. So look to the

  1304. Spirit as your

  1305. enabler to move

  1306. out of, as

  1307. Packer says, a

  1308. Christian life of

  1309. low expectations,

  1310. of religious

  1311. effort, formalism,

  1312. ruts, grooves,

  1313. so that in the

  1314. end, it might not

  1315. be for your

  1316. grave.

  1317. Thank you.

  1318. Thank you.
