  1. How many memberships do you have?

  2. I think I've got something like half a dozen memberships at the moment.

  3. I'm a member at Crunch Gym.

  4. I have a subscription to Netflix and Disney Plus at the moment.

  5. I've been a supporter of sporting teams.

  6. I need to become a member of the Chatswood RSL

  7. because there's a really great Chinese restaurant up the top there.

  8. I'm part of a wine club.

  9. I've been part of a coffee club.

  10. And I dip in and out of these.

  11. I'll get rid of Disney Plus for a while.

  12. I'll bring it back.

  13. I'll do something else.

  14. I'll give them my dollars.

  15. I'll be one of their members.

  16. I'll go on their books to boost up their numbers.

  17. And I'll choose when I go of what I'm part of,

  18. of what I give my time to, my attention to.

  19. And if I don't like it, I'll vote by cancelling my membership,

  20. not attending, those kinds of things.

  21. I wonder if it's possible for us that we think of being a church member

  22. as just one of any other membership.

  23. You know, I've been signed up to St. Paul's for a couple of years,

  24. maybe since I was baptized or maybe I was born into the church.

  25. And I attend.

  26. I give my dollars.

  27. I'm on their books as a member of the church.

  28. And I dip in and out.

  29. I'll pause my membership as other things come up and life gets busy.

  30. Maybe I'm still on a trial membership and I'm not really ready to commit yet.

  31. But is it possible that we have our view of what it means to be a part of a church,

  32. a member of church, shaped not by God, but by the world around us?

  33. We are in our vision series.

  34. A time to cast the vision of the church, not just for this year,

  35. but for the next five years of who we want to be as we follow Jesus together.

  36. And we want to be a church who is going deeper into relationship with God

  37. and deeper into relationship with each other as we follow this Jesus.

  38. At the start of the series, Steve told us that as we follow this Jesus,

  39. God has given us three wonderful gifts to help us do that.

  40. The first was the Bible and prayer.

  41. That because we want to have a relationship with God,

  42. God has given us relationship with Him.

  43. We can actually talk to Him.

  44. We can pray to Him.

  45. We can be in relationship with Him.

  46. The second gift is the Holy Spirit,

  47. who opens our eyes to see who Jesus is,

  48. to understand who God is,

  49. who prompts us,

  50. who calls us to be more like Him,

  51. who is changing us from the inside.

  52. And the third gift that God has given us to help us as we follow Jesus is the church.

  53. People to help us as we walk towards Jesus.

  54. Colleagues, brothers, sisters.

  55. But to understand today, as we look at what it means to be the church,

  56. we're going to see two things.

  57. First of all, we're going to question, what is the church?

  58. And second, what is the point?

  59. What is the purpose of church?

  60. And the challenge for us today will be to have God define who the church is

  61. and who we are to be.

  62. And not just to have a superficial membership of the church

  63. defined by all of those other memberships that we have in the world,

  64. but to take hold of God's gift of the church with both hands.

  65. So let me pray for us as we have a look at what God has to say to us.

  66. Let me pray.

  67. Heavenly Father, we thank you so much, first of all,

  68. that we get to know you,

  69. that we get to be people who are yours,

  70. and that you love us.

  71. And we thank you that you have gathered us this morning.

  72. Be with us as we look at your word.

  73. Help us to be ready to have our hearts shaped to be like you

  74. and to understand who we are to be as your church.

  75. Amen.

  76. What even is a church?

  77. The building is often called church.

  78. You know, we're going to church.

  79. But the church is so much more than that.

  80. The word means gathering.

  81. And so in the original language,

  82. anything was that any gathering of people was referred to as a church.

  83. So you could have the church who meets at the side of the soccer pitch

  84. who is made up of shouty parents on a Saturday morning.

  85. You could have a church of oolong tea fanatics.

  86. Whatever gathering you have,

  87. that's where the word church comes from.

  88. But over time,

  89. this word has come to be associated with religious activities

  90. and also with the building that we are in.

  91. But how does God describe his gathering?

  92. Have a look.

  93. We're going to be jumping around a couple of passages

  94. before we spend a little bit more time in that Hebrews 10 passage.

  95. So please have your Bibles open, phones.

  96. There is our church app, which has the outline.

  97. Or you can grab a Bible.

  98. If you do not have a Bible,

  99. get a Bible from the sides,

  100. one of the brown Bibles.

  101. We've written in them that they are for you.

  102. And you've just got to write your name in there.

  103. Please take one of those and have those.

  104. We're going to be in 1 Peter 2, verse 10.

    1 Peter 2:10

  105. So God, first of all, shows us

  106. that the church is universal,

  107. everywhere, and invisible.

  108. And it is also visible and local.

  109. In 1 Peter 2, verse 10, Peter says,

    1 Peter 2:10

  110. Once you were not a people,

  111. but now you are the people of God.

  112. Once you had not received mercy,

  113. but now you have received mercy.

  114. What Peter's doing is he's connecting God's saving people,

  115. God's showing mercy to people,

  116. with people,

  117. with these individuals becoming part of his people.

  118. He shows mercy,

  119. and these Christians are now part of a greater people.

  120. When we are saved,

  121. when the Holy Spirit reveals to us who Jesus is

  122. and we follow him,

  123. we become part of something larger,

  124. something bigger than us,

  125. something that is universal,

  126. something that is invisible,

  127. the church that is across all time and space,

  128. that goes into the past,

  129. and that goes into the future.

  130. We are part of something that is much larger than us.

  131. Paul talks about this church in Romans 8, verse 15.

    Romans 8:15

  132. He says,

  133. The spirit you received does not make you slaves

  134. so that you live in fear.

  135. Rather, the spirit you received

  136. brought about your adoption to sonship.

  137. And so the church is saved

  138. as part of this universal group of people

  139. who are sons,

  140. who have the full legal standing

  141. of a male heir in Roman culture,

  142. who have access to everything from the Father.

  143. And so we are part of God's family as his children

  144. across the globe and across time and space.

  145. And Hebrews 12 talks about this in verse 22.

  146. You have come to Mount Zion,

  147. to the city of the living God,

  148. the heavenly Jerusalem.

  149. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels

  150. in joyful assembly

  151. to the church of the firstborn,

  152. whose names are written in heaven.

  153. And so in one sense,

  154. the church right now is universal and invisible.

  155. We cannot see the church at the moment.

  156. We can see us here, sitting here.

  157. But the church is much larger.

  158. The church is those who have been adopted

  159. into God's family as his children.

  160. And also,

  161. the church is also,

  162. in a spiritual way,

  163. gathering around God in heaven already.

  164. There is this spiritual element

  165. to the church in heaven.

  166. And so the Bible,

  167. just having a look at these couple of verses,

  168. we can talk more about this if you like later,

  169. describes the church as

  170. one whole people

  171. of brothers and sisters

  172. made one family

  173. who are already in heaven

  174. in a spiritual way.

  175. And this is one of the reasons

  176. it is so encouraging

  177. to meet another Christian.

  178. I'm not sure if you've ever met

  179. another Christian

  180. in a totally random setting.

  181. There is just something unique.

  182. It's more than just,

  183. oh, here's another person

  184. who has a similar like to me.

  185. You know, they follow a sporting team.

  186. But it's this person

  187. also knows the same Jesus.

  188. They've also been loved

  189. by the same Jesus.

  190. And they know that

  191. there's nothing special about them,

  192. but they've been saved

  193. by the living God.

  194. There is just something

  195. about being part of this family

  196. which unites us.

  197. The youth around Easter

  198. are going up to Kik.

  199. Kik is a gathering of youth

  200. from all over New South Wales.

  201. And they go to Katoomba

  202. and there's thousands of them there.

  203. And it's so encouraging

  204. to be part of a youth group

  205. of say 30 kids

  206. and then to go and see 3,000 kids

  207. and go, oh wow,

  208. there are all of these other people

  209. who follow the same Jesus as me.

  210. This is really wonderful.

  211. This church that we are part of

  212. is huge.

  213. It is massive.

  214. It is universal.

  215. It's invisible.

  216. We can't see it.

  217. But the wonderful truth of it is

  218. it doesn't stay invisible.

  219. It shows up in real

  220. and physical locations.

  221. The universal becomes local.

  222. The invisible becomes visible.

  223. The church has a street address.

  224. This church is on the corner

  225. of Fuller's Road

  226. and View Street

  227. in Chatswood.

  228. And there are faces

  229. and names of people.

  230. There's tangible people.

  231. There's Gary over there.

  232. I can see Allie.

  233. There's Leslie in front.

  234. This church is no longer invisible.

  235. It's local

  236. and it's tangible.

  237. And so Paul,

  238. when he writes letters

  239. to the church,

  240. they're to specific churches.

  241. It's to the letter,

  242. to the church of God

  243. in Corinth,

  244. to the church in Galatia,

  245. to the church of the Thessalonians

  246. in Thessalonians.

  247. In Thessalonians.

  248. I can't even say that word.

  249. It's okay.

  250. I'll just skip it.

  251. I'll get it later.

  252. The church shows up

  253. in a time and in a place.

  254. If we're really part of God's body,

  255. the church,

  256. it doesn't just stay

  257. an abstract idea

  258. up in the clouds.

  259. I'm a part of the church.

  260. We don't just

  261. get baptized into a church

  262. and then never go again

  263. and say,

  264. oh yeah,

  265. I'm a member of that church.

  266. I was baptized there.

  267. When we are part

  268. of the heavenly church,

  269. the family of God,

  270. it shows up on earth

  271. in a time and space

  272. at 9 a.m.,

  273. at 11 a.m.

  274. on a Sunday morning

  275. in Chatswood.

  276. Being a member

  277. of the universal

  278. and invisible church

  279. must become visible

  280. in regular local gatherings.

  281. The church is those

  282. that God has called out

  283. to be His,

  284. to be His family.

  285. Brothers and sisters

  286. who show up

  287. and meet together regularly.

  288. I think there's a helpful way

  289. to understand this

  290. and this is through McDonald's.

  291. Does anybody love Maccas?

  292. No, the younger people

  293. are nodding.

  294. Yeah, James,

  295. yeah, James.

  296. Thank you, dear brother.

  297. That's why we need

  298. to support you,

  299. to help you.

  300. Maccas has got a franchise model.

  301. It's universal.

  302. It's everywhere.

  303. It's everywhere on the planet.

  304. I'm sure there'll be

  305. one on the moon soon.

  306. Head office

  307. sets the color scheme.

  308. They set

  309. what the staffing conditions

  310. are going to be like.

  311. They set the type

  312. what the stores look like.

  313. But you don't go

  314. to the head office

  315. to get a cheeseburger.

  316. You've got to go

  317. to a local store.

  318. You've got to go

  319. to the one in the

  320. Chatswood Interchange

  321. across from the train station

  322. if you want to get

  323. a cheeseburger.

  324. I can't say

  325. that I go to Maccas

  326. unless I actually turn up.

  327. Unless I actually,

  328. you know,

  329. walk in the door

  330. and push the buttons

  331. because you don't really

  332. talk to the people

  333. there anymore.

  334. The local

  335. and universal church

  336. is like McDonald's.

  337. Hopefully,

  338. we don't make you feel sick

  339. in 30 minutes or less.

  340. But the church

  341. is universal.

  342. It's everywhere

  343. across all time and space.

  344. It's in heaven

  345. in a spiritual way.

  346. It's on every continent.

  347. But I can't say

  348. that I'm part of a church

  349. unless I show up.

  350. Being part of the church

  351. means that I show up.

  352. And here at St. Paul's,

  353. we get to rub shoulders

  354. with people

  355. from the universal church.

  356. not all of it

  357. but an expression of it.

  358. And so,

  359. being a member

  360. of this church

  361. means

  362. you're also part

  363. of the church

  364. everywhere.

  365. And so,

  366. what is a church?

  367. A church is

  368. universal.

  369. It's invisible

  370. but it doesn't

  371. stay that way.

  372. It becomes visible

  373. and it becomes local

  374. when we turn up.

  375. It's a gathering

  376. of God's people

  377. in a time and space.

  378. Now,

  379. I know what I'm supposed

  380. to do when I go to McDonald's.

  381. When I go there,

  382. I'm usually there to eat

  383. or if I'm on a long car trip,

  384. I'm there to use the bathroom.

  385. And there,

  386. that's what McDonald's is for.

  387. But what is the church

  388. supposed to do?

  389. What's the purpose of it?

  390. We're all here together

  391. in one room.

  392. What is the point?

  393. That's our second point

  394. for today.

  395. What is the purpose

  396. of the church?

  397. As we saw in 1 Peter,

  398. our God is showing

  399. mercy to people,

  400. calling a people

  401. to himself.

  402. The church is

  403. a restoration

  404. of the vertical relationship,

  405. of God restoring

  406. the relationship

  407. with us,

  408. his people.

  409. It's a restoration

  410. of the vertical.

  411. Humanity and God

  412. are reconciled.

  413. But there's also

  414. a horizontal reconciliation

  415. that happens

  416. as the church.

  417. The purpose of the church

  418. is to bring unity,

  419. unity to a scattered,

  420. diverse,

  421. very different collection

  422. of warring people.

  423. Church is the reconciliation

  424. between God and people,

  425. but also the reconciliation

  426. of people and people,

  427. bringing people

  428. back to unity.

  429. And so in Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  430. I've got a couple of passages

  431. from Ephesians 2,

  432. so go to Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:11

  433. verse 11.

  434. Paul says,

  435. Paul says,

  436. therefore,

  437. remember that formerly

  438. you who are Gentiles

  439. by birth

  440. and called uncircumcised

  441. by those who call themselves

  442. the circumcision,

  443. which is done in the body

  444. by human hands,

  445. remember that at that time

  446. you were separate from Christ,

  447. excluded from citizenship

  448. in Israel,

  449. and foreigners

  450. to the covenant

  451. of the promise,

  452. without hope

  453. and without God

  454. in the world.

  455. So all people

  456. were scattered

  457. and divided

  458. from each other.

  459. There was real painful

  460. division between people groups,

  461. between the Jews

  462. and the Gentiles,

  463. between the Gentiles

  464. and the Gentiles,

  465. between countries

  466. and ethnicities.

  467. But,

  468. verse 13,

  469. but now in Christ Jesus,

  470. you who were once

  471. far away

  472. have been brought near

  473. by the blood of Christ.

  474. For he himself

  475. is our peace

  476. who has made

  477. the two groups one.

  478. He's destroyed the barrier,

  479. the dividing wall

  480. of hostility,

  481. by setting aside

  482. in his flesh

  483. the law

  484. with its commands

  485. and regulations.

  486. His purpose

  487. was to create

  488. in himself

  489. one new humanity

  490. out of the two,

  491. thus making peace.

  492. And in one body

  493. to reconcile both of them

  494. to God through the cross

  495. by which he put to death

  496. their hostility.

  497. And so Jesus

  498. gathers to himself

  499. people who now

  500. have peace.

  501. The dividing walls

  502. that people have put up

  503. between each other,

  504. between nations,

  505. between ethnicities,

  506. between next door neighbours,

  507. big fences,

  508. these get torn down

  509. in Jesus.

  510. God's great plan

  511. is to gather people

  512. to himself

  513. to restore that

  514. vertical relationship,

  515. but also

  516. to restore people

  517. to each other.

  518. And so this,

  519. so that people would know

  520. how great God is.

  521. God puts warring

  522. people together,

  523. the lion

  524. and the lamb,

  525. and they don't tear

  526. each other apart,

  527. there is actually peace.

  528. In Jesus,

  529. wars have been ended,

  530. people who have been

  531. divided

  532. have been brought

  533. back together.

  534. together.

  535. And so before the church

  536. is about us,

  537. the church is about

  538. seeing what God

  539. has already done

  540. and giving him

  541. the glory.

  542. We are,

  543. you only have to

  544. look around

  545. at the different

  546. ethnicities in the church

  547. and go back

  548. a hundred years

  549. and think about

  550. the wars that were

  551. fought based on

  552. countries and nations

  553. to realise that

  554. our God does

  555. wonderful things.

  556. if the US

  557. president,

  558. Joe Biden,

  559. is able to

  560. unite his

  561. divided country

  562. even in a small way,

  563. it'll be amazing.

  564. The US at the moment

  565. is divided on

  566. social issues,

  567. healthcare,

  568. Democrats versus

  569. Republicans,

  570. on so many issues.

  571. But if the US

  572. president is able

  573. to bring a sense

  574. of unity back

  575. to the United States,

  576. they'll be carving

  577. his face

  578. on Mount Rushmore.

  579. He will have

  580. done a great job.

  581. But what God

  582. has done in Jesus

  583. is far,

  584. far greater.

  585. He has united

  586. people across

  587. time and space,

  588. different languages,

  589. ethnicities,

  590. personal preferences,

  591. and he has brought

  592. us together

  593. in one family.

  594. Not a family

  595. at war with itself,

  596. one with peace.

  597. That is who we are

  598. to be.

  599. One showing

  600. God's awesomeness

  601. in bringing peace.

  602. A multi-ethnic,

  603. multi-generational,

  604. socio-economically

  605. diverse gathering

  606. of people declaring

  607. that Jesus is Lord

  608. for God's glory.

  609. That is who we are

  610. to be.

  611. And that's why

  612. I was thrilled

  613. to have the kids

  614. back in church

  615. with us this morning

  616. because they are part

  617. of who we are

  618. as a church.

  619. They are not something

  620. we push over to one side

  621. because they're noisy

  622. and distracting.

  623. They are part of

  624. who we are

  625. as the church.

  626. That is the big picture

  627. purpose of church,

  628. of what being a part

  629. of following Jesus

  630. means here at St. Paul's.

  631. The author of the letter

  632. to the Hebrews

  633. gets more specific for us,

  634. more practical

  635. about the purpose

  636. of the church

  637. for each other.

  638. So please turn to

  639. Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  640. starting in verse 19.

  641. It should also be

  642. on the screen.

  643. Verse 19,

  644. Therefore,

  645. brothers and sisters,

  646. since we have confidence

  647. to enter the most holy place

  648. by the blood of Jesus,

  649. by a new and living way

  650. open for us

  651. through the curtain

  652. that is his body,

  653. since all that Jesus

  654. has done,

  655. since all that he has done

  656. in his death

  657. and resurrection,

  658. his blood,

  659. the author to the Hebrews

  660. has a series

  661. of let us statements.

  662. Let us together

  663. as a group

  664. do these things.

  665. Verse 22,

  666. Let us draw near to God

  667. with a sincere heart

  668. and with a full assurance

  669. that faith brings.

  670. Let us draw near to God.

  671. We follow the Lord

  672. with faith

  673. only because of the work

  674. of the Holy Spirit

  675. in our hearts

  676. and we can understand

  677. who this God is

  678. by the inspiration

  679. of the Holy Spirit

  680. as we read his word.

  681. And so whenever we gather,

  682. we gather as a church

  683. around this Jesus

  684. and him revealed

  685. in the Bible.

  686. That is why,

  687. without a doubt,

  688. week in, week out,

  689. we read the Bible.

  690. When Steve or I preach

  691. or when anybody else

  692. is on the pulpit,

  693. we point to the Bible.

  694. I'm calling you

  695. to be reading the Bible

  696. as we read.

  697. These are just not

  698. my thoughts in isolation,

  699. but I want you to see

  700. what God's word

  701. has for us today.

  702. And so we draw close

  703. to God as the church,

  704. growing in faith

  705. around his word.

  706. Verse 22 continues,

  707. having our hearts

  708. sprinkled to cleanse us

  709. from a guilty conscience

  710. and having our bodies

  711. washed with pure water.

  712. This understanding

  713. that we as people

  714. have been made pure

  715. by Jesus,

  716. this is why often

  717. we will say

  718. a confession together,

  719. acknowledging that

  720. we are sinful people,

  721. but we have a great God

  722. who has dealt

  723. with our sin.

  724. And so we remind

  725. each other of that.

  726. Verse 23,

  727. let us hold unswervingly

  728. to the hope we profess

  729. for he who promised

  730. is faithful.

  731. We remind each other

  732. about who our hope

  733. is in

  734. so that we can hold

  735. to this hope.

  736. So at the start

  737. of our service,

  738. Debbie led us in

  739. in a creed

  740. from Colossians

  741. to say this is who

  742. our Jesus is

  743. that we follow

  744. so that we can

  745. hold fast to him.

  746. verse 24 continues,

  747. and let us consider

  748. how we may spur

  749. one another on

  750. toward love

  751. and good deeds.

  752. Let us be continuing

  753. to encourage each other.

  754. How can you be loving people?

  755. How can we be doing

  756. good deeds?

  757. How can we be made

  758. more like Jesus

  759. today and every day?

  760. These are both more

  761. than what happens

  762. in our church services,

  763. but not less.

  764. Up here,

  765. from the pulpit,

  766. we get to encourage

  767. each other

  768. to worship God,

  769. to be in the word,

  770. be praying,

  771. but also after the service

  772. as the church.

  773. As we gather outside,

  774. as we continue

  775. to gather here,

  776. as we go off for coffee,

  777. as we stand outside

  778. and watch our kids play,

  779. we get to encourage

  780. each other,

  781. to spur each other

  782. on to love

  783. and good deeds,

  784. to remind each other

  785. of the hope

  786. that we have.

  787. The last in this list

  788. of let us's

  789. is in verse 25.

  790. Let us

  791. not give up

  792. meeting together,

  793. as some are

  794. in the habit of doing,

  795. but encouraging

  796. one another

  797. and all the more

  798. as you see

  799. the day approaching.

  800. The author of the Hebrews

  801. is speaking about

  802. the tension between

  803. the local

  804. and the universal church.

  805. It's the thought

  806. that says,

  807. I'm a Christian,

  808. I can just stay

  809. at St. Pillow

  810. this morning,

  811. comfortable in my bed.

  812. I can just read my Bible

  813. and pray at home,

  814. God can still talk to me.

  815. I'm a Christian,

  816. I'm part of the church,

  817. the universal church,

  818. and this is true.

  819. But it isn't true

  820. in isolation

  821. from being part

  822. of the local church.

  823. In previous years,

  824. I may have encouraged you

  825. to be more regular

  826. at church,

  827. so that you can be

  828. encouraged to love

  829. and good deeds

  830. and you can encourage

  831. others to love

  832. and good deeds.

  833. In previous years,

  834. I may have done that.

  835. But the problem for us

  836. in the last year

  837. is that we've been able

  838. to meet,

  839. we've been unable

  840. to do what the author

  841. of the Hebrews

  842. commands us to do.

  843. The church building

  844. was closed.

  845. We couldn't do

  846. what this says.

  847. We had to stop

  848. meeting together.

  849. And we adapted

  850. really well.

  851. We moved online.

  852. We started streaming

  853. our services

  854. on YouTube.

  855. We had community groups

  856. over Zoom.

  857. And now we continue

  858. to live stream

  859. our services.

  860. And it's really wonderful

  861. for those who are unable

  862. to come and join

  863. in person,

  864. for those who are looking

  865. to see what church is like.

  866. Our dear brother,

  867. Nick Freestone,

  868. two weeks ago,

  869. had surgery

  870. and he couldn't be with us.

  871. But as he said,

  872. I loved that I could

  873. still see what was happening.

  874. I could still,

  875. in a sense,

  876. be part of church

  877. by watching at home.

  878. But since our return

  879. from COVID,

  880. there is a different

  881. challenge before us.

  882. We can face

  883. the temptation

  884. of thinking that

  885. being part of a church

  886. equals watching

  887. a service.

  888. Thinking that

  889. watching a video

  890. of church

  891. is the same

  892. as being part

  893. of a church.

  894. Now,

  895. we actually want

  896. to increase

  897. the amount

  898. of people watching.

  899. It's one of our goals

  900. that we want.

  901. We want so many people

  902. watching the YouTube

  903. live stream

  904. that people are getting

  905. to know who we are

  906. as a church

  907. and can get to know Jesus.

  908. But the live stream,

  909. the YouTube videos,

  910. have a purpose.

  911. If you have a friend

  912. who is interested

  913. in finding out

  914. about what church

  915. looks like,

  916. what goes on

  917. in a service,

  918. you can direct them

  919. to youtube.com

  920. slash St. Paul's Chatswood

  921. and they can check it out.

  922. But watching a service

  923. is not being part

  924. of a church.

  925. I think for us,

  926. our view of church

  927. can be impacted

  928. by TV habits.

  929. I can watch and binge

  930. whatever I like.

  931. And I think

  932. watching church

  933. can be like

  934. watching a sport.

  935. So I could go

  936. to an AFL game.

  937. Let's say I'm going

  938. to go and watch

  939. the Swans play.

  940. I think,

  941. correct me if I'm wrong,

  942. Rach,

  943. the AFL season

  944. is starting back soon.

  945. Yes,

  946. thank you dear sister.

  947. I could go

  948. to the game

  949. and watch it play

  950. in the rain

  951. and in the cold

  952. in the middle

  953. of the winter.

  954. Or I could watch it

  955. at home

  956. in the comfort

  957. of my lounge.

  958. The only problem

  959. is that being

  960. at church

  961. might feel like

  962. we're just sitting.

  963. We're just watching

  964. what's going on

  965. up here.

  966. But church

  967. is actually

  968. more like

  969. we're on the field

  970. together.

  971. We're actually

  972. doing something

  973. together.

  974. The author

  975. of the Hebrews

  976. has continuously

  977. encouraged us,

  978. let us

  979. do these things

  980. together.

  981. Let us

  982. hold each other

  983. accountable.

  984. Let us

  985. love each other,

  986. call each other

  987. to love and good deeds.

  988. And we can't do that

  989. if we're at home.

  990. We actually

  991. have to turn up

  992. in a time

  993. and space

  994. as the local church.

  995. We are together

  996. for the church's benefit

  997. and for the individuals

  998. as well

  999. as part of the whole.

1000. And we can't do that

1001. if we stay at home.

  1002. We're actually

  1003. a man down

  1004. if we,

  1005. a person down

1006. if we stay at home.

  1007. Together

  1008. as a church

1009. we draw near to God

  1010. reminding each other

  1011. of what the blood

  1012. of Jesus has done.

  1013. And so let us

  1014. hold to that hope.

  1015. Let us spur

  1016. one another

1017. onto love and good deeds

  1018. all the more

  1019. as the day approaches

  1020. when Jesus is going

  1021. to return.

1022. And we need to do this

  1023. because times are hard.

  1024. Times are hard now.

  1025. Times are going

  1026. to be hard tomorrow.

  1027. More and more

  1028. as Christians move

  1029. to the periphery

  1030. of society

  1031. as society moves away

  1032. from its Christian foundations.

1033. And we need each other.

  1034. It's why

  1035. this church

  1036. has the value

  1037. of treasuring

  1038. Jesus together.

  1039. It is so important.

  1040. Let me read

  1041. this value.

  1042. Every member

  1043. of St. Paul's

  1044. has been led

  1045. individually

1046. by the Spirit of God

  1047. to receive Jesus Christ

  1048. as the Lord,

  1049. Saviour

  1050. and Supreme

  1051. Treasure of our lives.

  1052. The Holy Spirit

  1053. gathers us

  1054. from all variety

  1055. of individual backgrounds

  1056. and unites us together

1057. as one body of Christ.

  1058. We believe

  1059. the people

  1060. whom Jesus

  1061. has called

  1062. into relationship

  1063. with himself

  1064. from every tribe,

  1065. language,

  1066. nation and generation

  1067. are his church

  1068. and not an institution

  1069. or building.

  1070. In an age

  1071. of individualism,

  1072. we value

  1073. vigilance

  1074. and accountability

  1075. in treasuring

  1076. Jesus together

  1077. as his diverse people.

  1078. this is who

  1079. we want to be

  1080. as a church.

  1081. Going deeper

  1082. in discipleship

  1083. and in relationship

  1084. with God

  1085. and deeper

  1086. in relationship

  1087. together.

  1088. It's about

  1089. our togetherness

  1090. as a dynamic

  1091. spiritual community

  1092. hand in hand

  1093. following

  1094. and treasuring

  1095. Jesus together.

  1096. For those

  1097. who are unable

  1098. to gather

  1099. who are watching

  1100. this right now,

  1101. I don't mean

1102. to make you feel guilty.

  1103. I just want

  1104. to point out

  1105. that you are

  1106. missing something

  1107. about being here

1108. as part of this church.

  1109. You are missing out

  1110. on how God

  1111. has designed

  1112. us as people

  1113. and how God

  1114. has designed

  1115. the church

  1116. to be together.

  1117. Because there is

  1118. something unique

  1119. about this

  1120. universal church

  1121. which becomes local.

  1122. Let me encourage you,

  1123. don't stop

  1124. gathering together.

  1125. This vision series

  1126. is not meant

1127. to be a hammer blow

  1128. to make you feel

  1129. guilty about

  1130. how much you

  1131. don't read the Bible

1132. or how much you pray

1133. or how close you feel.

  1134. But four weeks ago

  1135. Steve set out

  1136. the vision

  1137. that we want

  1138. to be people

  1139. who are following

  1140. Jesus.

  1141. Reading the Bible

  1142. and speaking to God

  1143. because they are

  1144. wonderful things

  1145. that God

  1146. has gifted us with

  1147. by the power

  1148. of the Holy Spirit

1149. and we get to do

  1150. this together

  1151. as the church.

  1152. With colleagues,

  1153. with close friends,

  1154. dear brothers

  1155. and sisters

  1156. to walk with you

  1157. towards Jesus

  1158. in all of life.

  1159. In December 2020,

  1160. Kenyan runner

  1161. Abel Mutai

  1162. was the first

1163. to cross the finish line

  1164. in a cross-country race

  1165. in Spain.

  1166. At least,

  1167. he thought he was

  1168. the first

  1169. to cross the line.

  1170. Ivan Fernandez Anaya,

  1171. who is the man

1172. you can see behind him,

  1173. a Spanish competitor,

  1174. was right behind Mutai

  1175. and he knew better.

  1176. He knew

  1177. that the Kenyan runner

  1178. Abel hadn't actually

  1179. finished the race.

  1180. He thought he'd finished

  1181. but he hadn't gotten

  1182. across the line

  1183. and Ivan,

  1184. the Spanish man,

  1185. had a chance.

  1186. He thought,

1187. I could have taken over.

  1188. I could have won

  1189. but instead of taking

  1190. advantage of the situation,

  1191. he plowed into him,

  1192. ran into him

  1193. and he gestured.

  1194. He urged him forward

  1195. to finish the race.

1196. He could have stolen it

1197. but he encouraged him on.

  1198. We are not quite

  1199. like those two runners.

  1200. We are more like

1201. the runners in this photo.

1202. We are part of a pack,

1203. a big group of people,

  1204. different ages,

  1205. ethnicities,

  1206. genders.

  1207. We are more like

  1208. the people running

  1209. in this photo,

  1210. running together

  1211. to Jesus,

  1212. urging one another on.

  1213. Come on,

  1214. you've fallen over.

  1215. Get up.

1216. Let me help you get up.

1217. I'm not going to leave you.

1218. The finish line is here.

  1219. Jesus is here.

  1220. Let's go together.

  1221. Are you part

  1222. of this church?

  1223. Are you part

  1224. of this church

1225. maybe with a trial membership?

  1226. Are you deeply connected

1227. to people in this church?

  1228. Have you opened

  1229. your life

  1230. to actually allow

  1231. other people

  1232. to come in

  1233. so that they can

  1234. urge you on

  1235. when you fall down

  1236. so that you can

  1237. urge others on?

  1238. First of all,

  1239. get connected

  1240. into a community group.

  1241. Come and see me.

  1242. Join a team.

  1243. Join a team

  1244. to serve

  1245. with other people

  1246. as we follow Jesus.

  1247. Go and drink coffee.

  1248. Invite somebody out.

  1249. The person sitting

  1250. next to you,

1251. if you don't know them,

  1252. get to know them.

  1253. We can try

  1254. to run this race

  1255. following Jesus

  1256. on our own,

  1257. but our God

  1258. hasn't designed us

  1259. that way.

  1260. He has given

  1261. to each of us

  1262. each other.

  1263. The church,

  1264. one body,

  1265. local

  1266. and universal,

  1267. showing the world

  1268. how good this God

  1269. is in uniting us

  1270. as we charge

  1271. towards him.

  1272. Let me pray.

  1273. Amen.

  1274. Heavenly Father,

  1275. we ask that we

  1276. would be that type

  1277. of church.

  1278. That we would not

  1279. try to go it

  1280. on our own

  1281. in faith,

  1282. thinking that we

  1283. are an island,

  1284. but Lord,

  1285. you have given us

  1286. each other.

  1287. Lord,

  1288. we ask that you

  1289. would help us

  1290. to walk together,

  1291. run together,

  1292. to be people

  1293. who are aware

  1294. of the needs

  1295. of the community

  1296. of believers

  1297. around us

  1298. so that we can

  1299. spur each other on.

  1300. Father,

  1301. give us much

  1302. patience and compassion

  1303. to love each other.

  1304. Lord,

  1305. help us to get

  1306. to know each other

  1307. deeply.

  1308. Lord,

  1309. help us to be

  1310. a community

  1311. that welcomes

  1312. people in,

  1313. but also

  1314. wants to know

  1315. each other,

  1316. to walk together

  1317. so that we

  1318. can follow you

1319. with all of our lives

1320. and all of our hearts,

  1321. Lord.

  1322. We ask this

  1323. in your son's name

  1324. and for your glory.

  1325. Amen.
