  1. Thank you for you on this Good Friday. If I've not met you before, my name is Steve. I'm the

  2. senior pastor here at St. Paul's, and I'd be grateful if you could have John 19 open in front

  3. of you. And also, just for a bit of a heads up, John chapter 4 as well. You may need that as we

    John 4 chapter mention

  4. go through too. Let me just jump straight in and say, Easter is what Christianity offers a world

  5. that is losing hope in its ability to fix itself. That's Easter. It's what Christianity offers you,

  6. you who cannot change, you who cannot find peace, cannot find security, cannot find hope,

  7. cannot find meaning. And so today and the next three Sundays, we as a church are going to be

  8. looking at hope and the hope that Easter offers this world. And already, Deb has indicated this

  9. time a year ago, we were in lockdown. We were not able to meet together as we are now because of

  10. COVID-19. In the past year, we have been in the midst of the worst global pandemic in a century

  11. and hopes even now of an early solution and for life to go back to normal is dashed again and again

  12. and again and again. And the problem we know with this pandemic is not just sickness. Virtually every

  13. sector in society will be impacted and will feel the repercussions of COVID-19 for years to come.

  14. And especially the vulnerable in our society. They will bear the greatest burden once again.

  15. Death, pandemics, injustice, family breakdown, social isolation, cancel culture, the threat of wars.

  16. None of it has stopped. None of it has stopped while we have faced a global enemy against the life of

  17. humanity. Which is confusing for us. In the West, particularly. For over two centuries now,

  18. Western societies like ours have put hope in the progressiveness of history. To put it simply,

  19. every day and in every way, we're getting better and better. And yet we're not.

  20. It's the strong belief that came out of the age of enlightenment that every generation would

  21. experience a better world than the one before it. The assumption is that via human reason, ingenuity,

  22. science, once freed from the superstitions of beliefs from centuries past, we would have a better future

  23. future together. Now we should have learned that lesson. We haven't. We should have learned that

  24. lesson in the first four decades of the 20th century. In the space of four decades, we faced two world wars

  25. like we'd never seen before. A global pandemic and the Great Depression. In fact, in the 20th century

  26. alone, more people were killed in wars than all history prior combined.

  27. What followed those four decades was the Cold War and the threat of nuclear holocaust.

  28. And it seems that the greatest threat to our hope for a better world is not the natural environment

  29. around us, but the various forms of evil that spring from the heart of the human being.

  30. Science could come up with a vaccine for COVID-19, but it can't eradicate human evil.

  31. Now by evil, I don't mean just the really big stuff like, you know, the Jewish Holocaust.

  32. I mean the ordinary cruelties of self-interest day by day in business, racism, arrogance, pride,

  33. dishonesty, corruptions, abuse, sexism, the countless acts of selfishness that we all practice day by day.

  34. And that brings me to Easter.

  35. And the hope for humanity.

  36. The word the Bible uses for hope is so much stronger than the one that's used in the English language.

  37. It means a profound certainty.

  38. Profound certainty.

  39. Christians are profoundly certain,

  40. even in the midst of pandemics and hardships,

  41. that God is guiding every twist and every turn of their life towards the resurrection of their bodies

  42. and their souls for a new, eternal and perfect world where everything wrong doesn't exist.

  43. It's a profound certainty.

  44. And all of this profound, certain hope is fixed.

  45. All of it is fixed to the explosive three days

  46. where the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Jesus of Nazareth,

  47. happened around 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem, Israel.

  48. In time, in space.

  49. It's a certain hope.

  50. And so my plan today is to take us into the beginnings of those events

  51. and really just focus on two things.

  52. Two things that Jesus said on the cross in that Bible reading that was just read out to us.

  53. And the first of those things reveals the nature of the hope that Jesus offers us.

  54. And the second thing that he says is how we can take up the hope that he offers us.

  55. So first of all, that's all I'm saying.

  56. Two things.

  57. Take a little while, but two things.

  58. The nature of his hope,

  59. the nature of his offer of hope.

  60. At the end of the crucifixion.

  61. So this is John 19.

  62. If you want to dive into that, it'd be really helpful.

  63. John chapter 19, the end of his crucifixion account.

    John 19 chapter mention

  64. We read this in verse 28.

  65. Later, knowing that everything had been finished.

  66. And so that the scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said,

  67. I am thirsty.

  68. Now, our first reaction to that is,

  69. well, of course he's thirsty.

  70. I mean, you know, it's the Middle East.

  71. It's really sand and sun there.

  72. It's really hot.

  73. He's been crucified under the Middle Eastern sun.

  74. He's losing lots of fluid.

  75. In fact, one of the things that you died from in crucifixion was dehydration.

  76. You died from dehydration amongst other things.

  77. And so, but if we linger over those words a little bit,

  78. we realize that in actual fact,

  79. it might be something significant that's happening here.

  80. Maybe there's something a little bit deeper.

  81. We need to think about this.

  82. You see, because Jesus has suffered an awful lot up until this point, right?

  83. He has been beaten in the face with fists.

  84. He has been lashed with a whip across his back in such a way.

  85. His back looks like a chunk of steak.

  86. He's had tent pegs.

  87. No, no, no.

  88. You know, not three-inch nails.

  89. He had tent pegs driven through his hands and his feet.

  90. He's had a crown of thorns squeezed over his head and lacerated his head.

  91. He has endured all of that and he's not complained once.

  92. Not once.

  93. Not even a whimper.

  94. He's accepted it.

  95. He's submitted to it.

  96. Not even an, ow, that hurt.

  97. Nothing.

  98. Nothing.

  99. So why now, why now at the end of all of that, does he say,

  100. actually I'm feeling thirsty.

  101. There's something deeper going on here.

  102. Something a bit deeper than just mere, I need a drink.

  103. And what's going on deeper here is,

  104. is a connection to something happened that much earlier in John's gospel,

  105. in John chapter four.

  106. Early in this biography, Jesus encounters a woman at a well.

  107. She's a Samaritan woman.

  108. And she is a mortal enemy of the Jewish people in the first century.

  109. And she is surprised, as she goes to draw water from the well,

  110. that Jesus says to her, a mortal enemy,

  111. can you give me a drink?

  112. Jesus says to her in chapter four, verse 13,

  113. everyone who drinks from this water,

  114. the water that you will draw from this well,

  115. will be thirsty again.

  116. But whoever drinks the water that I give them,

  117. will never thirst again.

  118. Indeed, the water that I give them,

  119. will become in them a spring of water,

  120. welling up to eternal life.

  121. So again, even as he asked for a drink of water in John four,

  122. he's talking about here something that's much deeper than mere physical thirst.

  123. That's because in the Bible, thirst is a metaphor for emptiness.

  124. It's a metaphor for spiritual emptiness

  125. that comes when we do not put God, our creator,

  126. at the center of our life.

  127. For instance, Psalm 42,

  128. as the deer pants for the streams of water,

  129. so my soul pants for you, my God.

  130. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

  131. Where can I go and meet with him?

  132. You see, it's one thing to believe that God exists,

  133. as the vast majority of our world still does.

  134. But it's quite another thing to have him as the central reality of your life.

  135. It's not belief in God,

  136. an intellectual assent that God exists,

  137. that our souls need so much as meeting God,

  138. knowing God, experiencing God.

  139. Without meeting, knowing, experiencing God,

  140. without him being the central reality of our life,

  141. we thirst.

  142. We die.

  143. That is, it's possible to have a belief in God,

  144. but have something else as the central defining reality for your life.

  145. If I may continue this metaphor a little bit more,

  146. these other things,

  147. success, approval, comfort, friendship, family,

  148. sex and romance, influence, money,

  149. a whole range of things,

  150. power,

  151. the actual drink that we are pouring into our souls to quench the thirst,

  152. the emptiness that we feel on the inside.

  153. We are hoping that these things will fill us up

  154. and satisfy us and give us hope.

  155. And the point that Jesus is getting to

  156. is if we attempt to quench the thirst of our soul

  157. with anything else than the love and the beauty

  158. and the comfort of God in Jesus Christ,

  159. then we will thirst again and again and again and again forever.

  160. Only God in Jesus can fully and satisfyingly quench the thirst of our emptiness.

  161. Everything else is like drinking seawater.

  162. It just simply makes you more thirsty.

  163. And so back in John 4

  164. and Jesus meeting with this Samaritan woman,

  165. Jesus says,

  166. the water that I will give them

  167. will become in them a spring of water

  168. welling up to eternal life.

  169. And so the woman hears this

  170. and he goes,

  171. Sir, give me that water right there.

  172. Give me that water

  173. so that I don't thirst

  174. and I don't have to keep coming here,

  175. drinking,

  176. you know,

  177. drawing the water here.

  178. What's amazing here,

  179. Jesus wants to give it.

  180. She immediately wants it

  181. and then Jesus doesn't give it to her.

  182. Not straight away.

  183. Instead,

  184. what appears to happen

  185. is that Jesus seems to change the subject in John 4.

  186. He says to her,

  187. well,

  188. go and get your husband.

  189. And her reply is,

  190. well,

  191. actually,

  192. I don't have a husband.

  193. And Jesus says,

  194. you're absolutely right.

  195. You have no husband.

  196. The fact is,

  197. you've had five husbands

  198. and the man you're currently with

  199. is not even your husband.

  200. She wants to take up the offer of eternal life.

  201. He changes the subject.

  202. Brings up her broken,

  203. messed up love life.

  204. Why?

  205. What are you doing,

  206. Jesus?

  207. Why be so harsh

  208. at this point with her?

  209. Why change the subject

  210. and be so harsh?

  211. And yet he isn't.

  212. He isn't changing the subject.

  213. And he's being incredibly tender.

  214. He's pointing out to her

  215. that all her messed up love life

  216. is simply a result

  217. of her looking

  218. to men

  219. to give her

  220. what only God

  221. can give her.

  222. To use the metaphor again,

  223. her life

  224. has revealed

  225. she's been drinking

  226. sea water

  227. all her life

  228. in the form of relationships

  229. with blokes.

  230. and she is thirsty.

  231. She is never satisfied.

  232. And Jesus offers her fresh water

  233. that will fill her up

  234. and satisfy her forever.

  235. The reason her life

  236. is going so poorly

  237. is because when

  238. we look to someone

  239. or something

  240. other than God

  241. for the love

  242. and the significance

  243. and the beauty

  244. and the security

  245. and the hope,

  246. we will thirst

  247. again

  248. and again

  249. and again

  250. and again

  251. because it will never

  252. ever

  253. satisfy.

  254. satisfy.

  255. You will thirst

  256. for eternity

  257. if you live your life

  258. that way.

  259. What she needed

  260. was God

  261. as the living reality

  262. at the center

  263. of her life.

  264. She needed to have

  265. the love of God

  266. at the center

  267. of her life

  268. so she didn't need

  269. to look

  270. to the love of men

  271. to give her

  272. what only God

  273. can give her

  274. to truly satisfy her.

  275. So Jesus was not

  276. so much confronting her

  277. but in actual fact

  278. lovingly convicting her

  279. and putting her

  280. to a greater hope.

  281. And what is interesting

  282. about this Samaritan woman

  283. is that she had

  284. belief in God

  285. but it wasn't enough.

  286. Jesus wasn't

  287. the center of her life.

  288. God was not

  289. the defining reality

  290. of her life

  291. and Jesus

  292. in this encounter

  293. helped her to see it.

  294. Other things

  295. were more important.

  296. That's the background

  297. of John 19

  298. so let's just

  299. flick back now

  300. to John 19

  301. and the crucifixion

  302. of Jesus.

  303. That is the reason

  304. why Jesus

  305. is thirsty.

  306. His thirst

  307. is a picture

  308. of what he is

  309. really going through

  310. on the cross.

  311. On the cross

  312. Jesus Christ

  313. is experiencing

  314. the ultimate thirst

  315. as the prophet

  316. Nahum

  317. in the Old Testament.

  318. Centuries before

  319. he put it like this.

  320. Who can withstand

  321. his indignation?

  322. Who can endure

  323. his fierce anger?

  324. His wrath

  325. is poured out

  326. like fire.

  327. On the cross

  328. Jesus

  329. was getting

  330. what the whole

  331. human race

  332. deserved

  333. for putting

  334. its evil

  335. in putting

  336. everything else

  337. apart from

  338. God

  339. at the center

  340. of their lives.

  341. He was getting

  342. what we deserve

  343. for our life

  344. of ignoring

  345. our created God.

  346. He was experiencing

  347. the divine

  348. justice.

  349. It was like

  350. a million

  351. Middle Eastern

  352. sons

  353. burning

  354. down on him.

  355. He is thirsting

  356. thirsting

  357. in our place

  358. so that we

  359. can have

  360. living water.

  361. He is dying

  362. of spiritual

  363. thirst.

  364. He is being

  365. emptied.

  366. The one

  367. who was always

  368. full

  369. was being

  370. emptied

  371. so that we

  372. can be filled.

  373. He is experiencing

  374. the agony

  375. of being separated

  376. from God

  377. the fountain

  378. of living water

  379. so that we

  380. can have

  381. direct access

  382. to the fountain

  383. of eternal

  384. living water.

  385. Jesus experienced

  386. the agony

  387. of separation

  388. of love

  389. from his

  390. father.

  391. The experience

  392. of his

  393. fire of judgment

  394. so that we

  395. can experience

  396. his presence

  397. and love

  398. and the

  399. never ending

  400. refreshment

  401. of the water

  402. of eternal

  403. life.

  404. He got

  405. what we

  406. deserve

  407. so that we

  408. can get

  409. what only

  410. he rightly

  411. deserves.

  412. He suffered

  413. so that we

  414. can have a

  415. river of life

  416. welling up.

  417. That is his

  418. favour,

  419. his love,

  420. his approval,

  421. his acceptance.

  422. That is the

  423. nature

  424. of his

  425. offer of hope

  426. for us

  427. this Good

  428. Friday.

  429. So secondly,

  430. how do we

  431. take it up?

  432. The last

  433. thing that

  434. Jesus breathes

  435. on the cross,

  436. the last thing

  437. he says is

  438. in verse 30.

  439. It

  440. is

  441. finished.

  442. Now

  443. Jesus is

  444. using a

  445. word here

  446. that means

  447. totally paid

  448. for.

  449. Totally

  450. paid for.

  451. It's a

  452. word that

  453. you used to

  454. write across

  455. an account

  456. in the

  457. first century.

  458. Paid in

  459. full.

  460. See,

  461. one of the

  462. great

  463. and wonderful

  464. paradoxes of

  465. history

  466. is that

  467. here

  468. on the

  469. cross

  470. just

  471. outside

  472. of

  473. Jerusalem

  474. is the

  475. helpless,

  476. powerless,

  477. almost dead,

  478. dependent

  479. Jesus

  480. on a

  481. cross

  482. and his

  483. last words

  484. that he

  485. uttered,

  486. I did it.

  487. I've

  488. triumphed,

  489. I've

  490. accomplished

  491. it,

  492. it's

  493. finished.

  494. And what

  495. he's

  496. accomplished

  497. for us,

  498. what he

  499. describes,

  500. is beautifully

  501. described for

  502. us a little

  503. bit later

  504. in the

  505. New

  506. Testament.

  507. It

  508. says,

  509. Christ also

  510. suffered once

  511. for sins,

  512. the righteous

  513. for the

  514. unrighteous,

  515. to bring

  516. you

  517. to God.

  518. You see,

  519. there's this

  520. infinite

  521. chasm between

  522. us and

  523. God and

  524. Jesus has

  525. done

  526. everything

  527. required.

  528. He has

  529. paid every

  530. debt that

  531. we owe

  532. to God,

  533. dealt with

  534. every single

  535. bit of

  536. shame and

  537. guilt and

  538. sin.

  539. He's

  540. accomplished

  541. it all,

  542. there's

  543. nothing

  544. more to

  545. pay.

  546. There is

  547. nothing more

  548. that we have

  549. to do to

  550. bridge the

  551. gap between

  552. us and

  553. God.

  554. And so

  555. contrast,

  556. contrast

  557. Jesus'

  558. last word

  559. here with

  560. the last

  561. word of

  562. Buddha.

  563. The last

  564. word of

  565. Buddha,

  566. strive

  567. without

  568. ceasing.

  569. Jesus,

  570. it's

  571. finished.

  572. I've

  573. thirsted for

  574. you and

  575. it is

  576. finished

  577. versus

  578. strive

  579. without

  580. ceasing.

  581. ceasing.

  582. Now let

  583. me say,

  584. there's a

  585. lot of

  586. admirable

  587. things about

  588. Buddhism,

  589. like the

  590. self-denial

  591. and the

  592. recognition

  593. that selfishness

  594. is one of

  595. humanity's

  596. biggest

  597. problems.

  598. problems.

  599. But if you

  600. know anything

  601. about

  602. Buddhism,

  603. you would

  604. know that

  605. the

  606. eightfold

  607. path of

  608. Buddhism is

  609. extremely

  610. hard and

  611. incredibly

  612. demanding and

  613. you would

  614. never actually

  615. have hoped

  616. that you've

  617. done enough.

  618. Strive

  619. without ceasing.

  620. Keep

  621. going and

  622. you may get

  623. enlightenment.

  624. fulfillment.

  625. That's why

  626. these last

  627. words of

  628. Jesus here

  629. is so

  630. important.

  631. I've done

  632. all the

  633. striving for

  634. you.

  635. I've done

  636. everything to

  637. bring you to

  638. salvation.

  639. I've thirsted

  640. so that you

  641. might be

  642. fully satisfied.

  643. Religion is

  644. where you

  645. give God a

  646. performance and

  647. hope and

  648. hope and

  649. hope that he

  650. might wishful

  651. thinking,

  652. that he may

  653. in fact bless

  654. you.

  655. The core

  656. message of

  657. Christianity,

  658. the core

  659. message of

  660. Easter,

  661. the good

  662. news of

  663. Easter,

  664. which is why

  665. it's called

  666. Good Friday,

  667. is that God

  668. blesses us in

  669. Jesus Christ

  670. and we get

  671. to live,

  672. to love and

  673. serve him,

  674. the only one

  675. who has

  676. already given

  677. us every

  678. love,

  679. every blessing

  680. and every

  681. acceptance.

  682. Jesus has

  683. done it all,

  684. fulfilled it

  685. all.

  686. Any effort

  687. on our

  688. behalf to

  689. make his

  690. completed,

  691. finished work

  692. any better

  693. actually makes

  694. it worse.

  695. Anything that

  696. we think we

  697. contribute makes

  698. it worse.

  699. It unpacks

  700. it, any

  701. effort, any

  702. striving.

  703. When Jesus

  704. says it is

  705. finished, what

  706. he actually

  707. means is it

  708. is finished.

  709. finished, we

  710. cannot receive

  711. his salvation

  712. and act as

  713. if we can

  714. add to it.

  715. So let me

  716. just go on a

  717. little bit of a

  718. tangent here.

  719. There are two

  720. kinds of people

  721. in this world

  722. who attempt to

  723. add to the

  724. finished work of

  725. Jesus.

  726. There's the

  727. one kind of

  728. person is the

  729. beat myself up

  730. person and the

  731. other person is

  732. prove myself

  733. person.

  734. There's the

  735. self-beaters and

  736. the self-provers

  737. and all of us

  738. on one way or

  739. another on a

  740. scale there.

  741. The self-beater is

  742. the one every

  743. time someone

  744. criticizes, they

  745. are just going to

  746. crumble.

  747. They are

  748. devastated and

  749. they beat

  750. themselves up.

  751. Every time they

  752. do something wrong

  753. and make a

  754. mistake, they

  755. beat themselves

  756. up.

  757. In fact, it's

  758. quite possible that

  759. you did something

  760. 30 years ago and

  761. you're still

  762. beating yourself

  763. up about it.

  764. You cannot get

  765. past it.

  766. You feel bad

  767. about it.

  768. In fact, you

  769. only feel good

  770. about yourself

  771. when you are

  772. feeling bad

  773. about yourself.

  774. You're a

  775. beat yourself up

  776. person and you

  777. need to know

  778. this Good Friday

  779. that Jesus was

  780. beaten up from

  781. you and it

  782. was finished.

  783. He paid for

  784. your sins.

  785. Why do you

  786. still keep

  787. trying to pay

  788. for them?

  789. It is finished

  790. attempting to

  791. add anything

  792. to what

  793. Jesus done

  794. simply detracts

  795. from it.

  796. The other

  797. person is the

  798. self-prover.

  799. They usually

  800. feel much

  801. better about

  802. themselves than

  803. the self-beater.

  804. They're often

  805. proud, self-made

  806. person.

  807. You've done a

  808. little bit of

  809. success in life,

  810. you think it

  811. means something.

  812. The need to

  813. have money,

  814. success,

  815. possessions,

  816. family,

  817. career, in

  818. order to

  819. feel secure

  820. and significant

  821. means you

  822. are trying to

  823. add to

  824. Jesus' work

  825. to make us

  826. all secure

  827. and acceptable.

  828. The message

  829. of Christianity

  830. is that we

  831. are all,

  832. every single

  833. one of us,

  834. is a sinner

  835. saved by grace

  836. if we trust

  837. in the

  838. finished work

  839. of Jesus

  840. who has

  841. thirsted for

  842. us.

  843. what

  844. Christianity

  845. tells us,

  846. what

  847. Isa

  848. tells us,

  849. is our

  850. hearts

  851. are more

  852. evil than

  853. we ever

  854. dare to

  855. believe.

  856. That's what

  857. the cross

  858. tells us.

  859. Our hearts

  860. are more

  861. evil than

  862. we ever

  863. dare to

  864. believe and

  865. we are

  866. more loved

  867. than we

  868. ever dare

  869. hope or

  870. imagine.

  871. At exactly

  872. the same

  873. time,

  874. the person

  875. who tries

  876. to prove

  877. themselves

  878. doesn't

  879. understand

  880. that they

  881. can never

  882. do it

  883. because in

  884. fact they

  885. are more

  886. evil than

  887. they could

  888. ever possibly

  889. imagine.

  890. Conversely,

  891. people constantly

  892. trying to

  893. atone for

  894. their flaws

  895. by beating

  896. themselves up

  897. never will

  898. because they

  899. are already

  900. loved and

  901. affirmed more

  902. than their

  903. wildest dreams

  904. could ever

  905. hope.

  906. God

  907. humbles the

  908. one and

  909. affirms the

  910. other.

  911. It is

  912. finished.

  913. Jesus'

  914. death on

  915. the cross

  916. doesn't

  917. make us

  918. a contributor

  919. to our

  920. salvation.

  921. It is

  922. our

  923. salvation.

  924. All of

  925. our overwork

  926. and anxiety

  927. and constant

  928. striving,

  929. our lack

  930. of gratitude

  931. and rejoicing

  932. is because

  933. we do not

  934. know that

  935. it is

  936. finished.

  937. It's

  938. done.

  939. the amazing

  940. truth of

  941. Easter is

  942. summarised

  943. really

  944. succinctly

  945. in a

  946. little bit

  947. later in

  948. the New

  949. Testament.

  950. Here is a

  951. trustworthy

  952. saying that

  953. deserves full

  954. acceptance.

  955. Jesus Christ

  956. came into

  957. the world

  958. to save

  959. sinners

  960. and he

  961. did it.

  962. It's

  963. finished.

  964. is there

  965. any more

  966. wonderful

  967. news for

  968. people like

  969. us who

  970. know we

  971. cannot measure

  972. up to the

  973. demands of

  974. our own

  975. conscience,

  976. let alone the

  977. demands of

  978. our own

  979. holiness,

  980. while still

  981. living in

  982. fear of what

  983. this future

  984. of this world

  985. might hold.

  986. Easter is

  987. full of hope

  988. for the

  989. self-beaters

  990. and the

  991. self-provers.

  992. it is full

  993. of hope

  994. for you.

  995. It is

  996. finished

  997. in Jesus.

  998. So see

  999. your need

  1000. met in

  1001. him and

  1002. centre your

  1003. life on

  1004. him.

  1005. The hope

  1006. of Easter

  1007. is summed

  1008. up so

  1009. wonderfully

  1010. and possibly

  1011. the most

  1012. famous Bible

  1013. verse of

  1014. all.

  1015. God so

  1016. loved the

  1017. world that

  1018. he gave

  1019. his only

  1020. son that

  1021. whoever

  1022. believes in

  1023. him should

  1024. not perish

  1025. but have.

  1026. eternal

  1027. life.

  1028. One of the

  1029. things that

  1030. we get to

  1031. do as

  1032. a bunch

  1033. of people

  1034. gathered in

  1035. a room like

  1036. this today

  1037. is to

  1038. celebrate in

  1039. a visual

  1040. form the

  1041. death and

  1042. the resurrection

  1043. of Jesus

  1044. with the

  1045. communion

  1046. elements.

  1047. We get to

  1048. do this

  1049. together,

  1050. have a

  1051. physical

  1052. reminder of

  1053. the hope

  1054. that we

  1055. have in

  1056. Easter.

  1057. Can I

  1058. just say

  1059. that if

  1060. you are

  1061. someone who

  1062. trusts in

  1063. the Lord

  1064. Jesus,

  1065. you are

  1066. someone who

  1067. got your

  1068. life centred

  1069. on Christ

  1070. right now,

  1071. then I

  1072. would invite

  1073. you to

  1074. participate in

  1075. these elements

  1076. right now.

  1077. If you are

  1078. someone who is

  1079. with us today

  1080. and you are

  1081. just not

  1082. sure where

  1083. you are or

  1084. if you might

  1085. be clear you

  1086. don't know

  1087. where you are,

  1088. can I just

  1089. encourage you to

  1090. let these

  1091. elements go

  1092. past you?

  1093. Take this

  1094. opportunity right

  1095. now to

  1096. reflect on

  1097. what we have

  1098. just seen in

  1099. John 4 and

  1100. John 19

  1101. and find

  1102. that the

  1103. thirst of

  1104. your soul

  1105. is only

  1106. ever satisfied

  1107. in Jesus

  1108. Christ.

  1109. And as

  1110. we receive

  1111. these elements,

  1112. bow your

  1113. head and

  1114. receive Christ

  1115. for the first

  1116. time.

  1117. Do that

  1118. today.

  1119. But

  1120. acknowledging

  1121. that we

  1122. are flawed

  1123. and we

  1124. are sinful

  1125. people,

  1126. up on the

  1127. screen,

  1128. we're going

  1129. to say a

  1130. prayer

  1131. together

  1132. acknowledging

  1133. our need

  1134. for

  1135. no,

  1136. it's not

  1137. on the

  1138. screen.

  1139. So let

  1140. me instead

  1141. lead us in

  1142. that prayer.

  1143. Bow your

  1144. heads.

  1145. This is for

  1146. the kids

  1147. amongst us

  1148. as well,

  1149. so I've

  1150. sort of

  1151. made it

  1152. easier for

  1153. them to

  1154. grapple with

  1155. some of

  1156. this language.

  1157. Oh

  1158. Father God,

  1159. we are

  1160. sorry for

  1161. living,

  1162. for

  1163. ourselves,

  1164. for loving

  1165. other things,

  1166. other people

  1167. more than we

  1168. love you,

  1169. and forgetting

  1170. to pray and

  1171. asking you to

  1172. forgive our

  1173. sins.

  1174. Father,

  1175. forgive us.

  1176. Wipe away

  1177. our guilt

  1178. and our

  1179. sadness.

  1180. Take away

  1181. our shame.

  1182. Change our

  1183. hearts to

  1184. love what you

  1185. love and to

  1186. turn away from

  1187. what you

  1188. hate.

  1189. Thank you

  1190. for your

  1191. love,

  1192. for your

  1193. never-stopping,

  1194. unbreaking,

  1195. unbreaking,

  1196. always and

  1197. forever love.

  1198. Thank you

  1199. for our

  1200. life of

  1201. freedom that

  1202. we have

  1203. because Jesus

  1204. died.

  1205. Thank you

  1206. for our

  1207. hope in

  1208. Jesus that

  1209. never changes,

  1210. that never

  1211. fades away.

  1212. Thank you

  1213. in Jesus

  1214. that we

  1215. never thirst

  1216. and are

  1217. fully satisfied

  1218. forever

  1219. in such

  1220. a way

  1221. that the

  1222. well of

  1223. water of

  1224. life just

  1225. flows into

  1226. us.

  1227. And so

  1228. in Jesus

  1229. name we

  1230. give you

  1231. thanks.

  1232. Amen.
