  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. If I've met you before, my name is Steve.

  3. I'm the senior pastor here at St. Paul's.

  4. And I just want to say as I kick off,

  5. really grateful for those who do the translation work for me in advance,

  6. submit a sermon in advance so that they can do the translation

  7. so that those who are not as sharp with English

  8. or can't follow my English

  9. have got something in their own language.

  10. And so thank you, John, for this last week.

  11. Let me just say I've actually changed it since then,

  12. particularly the introduction bit mainly,

  13. mainly because I read something this morning

  14. which prompted my attention

  15. and I thought would be particularly useful for us this morning.

  16. So if you've got John chapter 20 open in front of you,

    John 20 chapter mention

  17. that would be awesome.

  18. Also, there's St. Paul's app.

  19. You can download that and I've got an outline there for us.

  20. So here it is.

  21. Read this this morning in the Australian newspaper.

  22. Immortality has become the great question mark.

  23. The answer used to be provided at Easter

  24. with the Christian climax in the death by crucifixion

  25. followed by resurrection.

  26. The Jesus story wrestled with death,

  27. not being merely death.

  28. Today, however,

  29. the sacred meaning of Easter is little more than a dusty relic.

  30. For the secular modern age,

  31. belief in any form of life after death is in doubt.

  32. Most no longer believe in any form of supernatural being.

  33. God has become a figment of the archaic imagination.

  34. Gods of any type are mere alien superstitions

  35. held once upon a time by naive and even primitive ancestors.

  36. All in all,

  37. human consciousness has narrowed down to focus on mortal life.

  38. Here,

  39. now,

  40. and on this worldly plane.

  41. A finite span bound by death,

  42. by birth and death,

  43. and governed by everyday pleasures and pains.

  44. Well,

  45. it's Easter Day 2021

  46. in modern Australia,

  47. so,

  48. frankly,

  49. why are we here?

  50. If that article's true,

  51. why are you here?

  52. Why even bother?

  53. Why not just eat the chocolate,

  54. go out for breakfast,

  55. and get ready to head to the beach?

  56. Why bother even turning up?

  57. This article,

  58. and many like it,

  59. raises two big questions

  60. about Easter,

  61. and not just about Easter,

  62. but about the truth of Christianity.

  63. It's central,

  64. and the essential event

  65. of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

  66. The first question is,

  67. the truth question.

  68. The second question is,

  69. the meaning question.

  70. Whenever we talk about the resurrection of Jesus,

  71. the truth question and the meaning question

  72. are intertwined.

  73. They are deeply connected.

  74. The truth question,

  75. did it actually happen?

  76. The meaning question,

  77. who cares that it happened or not happened?

  78. Humanity rejects Easter,

  79. Christianity,

  80. the lordship of Jesus Christ,

  81. on both of those accounts.

  82. See,

  83. about 50 years ago,

  84. an article like that

  85. would not have appeared

  86. in an Australian newspaper.

  87. 50 years ago,

  88. people lived with the assumption

  89. that there are universal laws

  90. that govern the universe.

  91. Resurrection was rejected

  92. on the basis

  93. of it not fitting

  94. into the common person's

  95. observable laws.

  96. That's now changed.

  97. Today,

  98. the assumption is that there is a personal law

  99. inside of me.

  100. Not a universal law,

  101. a personal law.

  102. It's called individualism.

  103. And one form of individualism

  104. is the personal law that says,

  105. I don't have to adapt my life

  106. to anything that I don't find

  107. personally helpful for me.

  108. Truth for me

  109. is what I find acceptable,

  110. helpful,

  111. useful,

  112. and affirming of me

  113. and my worldview.

  114. That's truth.

  115. So both questions.

  116. The truth question

  117. and the so what question

  118. are important to address

  119. at the same time

  120. and no more important

  121. than now

  122. on Easter Day.

  123. And so the next little while

  124. I'm going to briefly tackle

  125. those two questions

  126. and land with a third point.

  127. So I've got the truth question,

  128. the who cares question,

  129. and what it means for us

  130. on Easter Day

  131. to discover some certainty,

  132. certain hope.

  133. So the truth question.

  134. The great C.S. Lewis

  135. once wrote

  136. that in a world

  137. that was making

  138. rapid advancement

  139. in scientific understanding,

  140. he said,

  141. there's a great danger for us

  142. in our modern age

  143. of what he called

  144. a chronological snobbery.

  145. It's the assumption

  146. that any conclusion

  147. that's made

  148. from previous generations

  149. is fundamentally based

  150. on ignorance.

  151. for instance,

  152. chronological snobbery

  153. might lead

  154. some to conclude

  155. that the people

  156. around Jesus' time

  157. were just gullible,

  158. simple peasants

  159. who were just

  160. ignorant of reality

  161. and just believed anything.

  162. And yet that's not

  163. the picture we get

  164. when we look at

  165. John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  166. If you've got

  167. John chapter 20,

    John 20 chapter mention

  168. open it up for me again.

  169. Look at the very first

  170. two verses there.

  171. Early on the first day

  172. of the week,

  173. while it was still dark,

  174. Mary Magdalene

  175. went to the tomb

  176. and saw that the stone

  177. had been removed

  178. from the entrance.

  179. And so she came

  180. running to Simon Peter

  181. and the other disciple,

  182. the one whom Jesus loved,

  183. and said,

  184. and notice what she says,

  185. they've taken the Lord

  186. out of the tomb

  187. and we don't know

  188. where they put him.

  189. Now you see,

  190. Jesus,

  191. a number of times

  192. before his execution,

  193. he said,

  194. I'm going to come back

  195. to life after they kill me.

  196. And yet,

  197. in this moment,

  198. this is not what Mary's expecting.

  199. One of his keenest followers

  200. doesn't come to the conclusion,

  201. he said he was going to rise.

  202. The first assumption here,

  203. somebody,

  204. whoever they is,

  205. somebody has taken

  206. the body,

  207. moved it.

  208. It's the same in verse 13.

  209. She was working on the assumption

  210. that most likely

  211. the Jewish leaders

  212. or the Romans

  213. or someone

  214. have taken the body

  215. and dumped it

  216. outside the city limits.

  217. That is,

  218. Mary,

  219. first century,

  220. gullible peasant,

  221. doesn't jump to the conclusion

  222. that Jesus is resurrected.

  223. Even Peter and John,

  224. two of the key followers of Jesus,

  225. didn't automatically

  226. jump to the conclusion

  227. that Jesus had been resurrected.

  228. Have a look at verse 8.

  229. Finally,

  230. the other disciple

  231. who had reached the tomb first

  232. also went inside.

  233. He saw

  234. and believed.

  235. But verse 9,

  236. they did not understand

  237. from scripture

  238. that Jesus had to rise

  239. from the dead.

  240. That is,

  241. they believed the testimony

  242. of what Mary had said,

  243. the tomb's empty.

  244. And so they believed that,

  245. but they had not yet

  246. come to the conclusion

  247. that Jesus had resurrected.

  248. This tells me

  249. that these early followers

  250. of Jesus

  251. were not gullible people.

  252. Jesus told them repeatedly

  253. that he would come back to life.

  254. But they weren't looking for it.

  255. And yet,

  256. what they were confronted with

  257. on that morning

  258. was a bodiless tomb.

  259. All the evidence

  260. pointed to a bodiless tomb.

  261. There was no body

  262. in the tomb.

  263. In fact,

  264. one of the great

  265. historical evidences

  266. of the resurrection

  267. is that to this day,

  268. no one can explain

  269. why the tomb was empty

  270. apart from a resurrection.

  271. To this day,

  272. historical evidence

  273. that tomb was empty

  274. and it still cannot be explained

  275. except for a resurrection.

  276. And even the enemies of Jesus

  277. could not produce the body.

  278. And if they could have,

  279. they would have ended

  280. this whole Christian movement thing

  281. within a day.

  282. Done.

  283. Finished.

  284. There's your Messiah.

  285. Right there.

  286. So what are some of the more

  287. modern explanations

  288. of an empty tomb?

  289. What are the ones

  290. people that have come up with

  291. more recently?

  292. Some have suggested,

  293. well, in actual fact,

  294. Jesus didn't really die.

  295. He was revived.

  296. You know,

  297. put in the coolness,

  298. of the,

  299. you know,

  300. tomb.

  301. He revived,

  302. moved the stone himself

  303. and disappeared

  304. in history somewhere.

  305. Of course,

  306. that doesn't come to grips

  307. with the actual

  308. horrible realities

  309. of crucifixion.

  310. The rigorous steps

  311. that Pilate

  312. and the leaders

  313. demanded

  314. to make sure

  315. that he was,

  316. in fact,

  317. dead

  318. on the death,

  319. on the cross

  320. before they took

  321. his body down.

  322. And the steps

  323. that were also taken

  324. to make sure

  325. that no one

  326. got in

  327. or out

  328. of that tomb.

  329. Of course,

  330. that was never

  331. an argument

  332. that neither Jews

  333. or the Romans

  334. came up with.

  335. Neither of them

  336. came up.

  337. The actual people

  338. there at the time

  339. never came up

  340. with that as an argument.

  341. Some have suggested

  342. that the disciples

  343. of Jesus

  344. stole the body.

  345. if they did,

  346. then these guys

  347. began to risk

  348. their lives

  349. and, in fact,

  350. give their lives up

  351. for what they knew

  352. to be nothing more

  353. than an April Fool's joke.

  354. The fact is,

  355. these disciples

  356. were utterly

  357. dejected.

  358. They were terrified

  359. after the crucifixion

  360. of Jesus.

  361. They were scared

  362. that they were

  363. going to be treated

  364. in exactly the same

  365. way as Jesus.

  366. They feared

  367. for their lives.

  368. They did not have

  369. hope of a resurrection

  370. and they were ready

  371. to go back

  372. to fishing.

  373. They were hiding

  374. in a secluded room

  375. unwilling

  376. to believe

  377. the first reports

  378. of Jesus' appearance

  379. three days

  380. after he was executed.

  381. And yet,

  382. that bunch

  383. of cowards

  384. who deserted him

  385. with a matter

  386. of weeks,

  387. these same men

  388. were overflowing

  389. with joy

  390. and courage

  391. and they were

  392. not only just

  393. ready to die

  394. for Jesus

  395. but most of them

  396. did.

  397. This little band

  398. of ordinary believers

  399. changed the course

  400. of human history.

  401. They and those

  402. who came to believe

  403. through them

  404. loved and served

  405. their enemies

  406. and gave their lives

  407. to their enemies

  408. across the entire

  409. Roman Empire

  410. in such a way

  411. that the world

  412. was changed

  413. within three centuries.

  414. How?

  415. What happened?

  416. Their own

  417. explanation

  418. was that they

  419. saw Jesus

  420. alive

  421. after he was

  422. dead

  423. as Jesus

  424. had promised.

  425. Now there is

  426. far more

  427. historical

  428. and rational

  429. evidence

  430. than just that

  431. but

  432. much more

  433. that could be said

  434. except to say

  435. that doubting

  436. the resurrection

  437. of Jesus

  438. is a normal

  439. starting point

  440. and if that's

  441. you

  442. just out there

  443. on the table

  444. out in the atrium

  445. there is a book

  446. here called

  447. The Case for Easter

  448. there is a few

  449. copies out there

  450. if that's you

  451. and you are really

  452. wrestling with this

  453. take it as a gift

  454. and go

  455. read it

  456. please

  457. or come and speak

  458. to one of us

  459. we would love

  460. to have a chat

  461. with you about that.

  462. Strangely however

  463. in John 20

  464. the first person

  465. to doubt the

  466. resurrection

  467. verbally

  468. was not a person

  469. who was opposed

  470. to Christianity

  471. it's one of Jesus

  472. closest supporters

  473. a man named

  474. Thomas

  475. and Thomas

  476. is the most famous

  477. of all doubters

  478. in fact we have a saying

  479. in our culture

  480. to this day

  481. for the skeptic

  482. of any news

  483. ah you're just

  484. a doubting Thomas

  485. so for those of us

  486. who are struggling

  487. to understand

  488. or accept the

  489. resurrection

  490. you've got to

  491. ask yourself

  492. right now

  493. can Thomas

  494. help me

  495. if this is me

  496. now

  497. can Thomas

  498. help me here

  499. now we're told

  500. that Thomas

  501. was not there

  502. when Jesus

  503. first appeared

  504. to his disciples

  505. soon after

  506. he rose from the dead

  507. so have a look

  508. there

  509. verse 24

  510. so the other

  511. disciples told him

  512. we have seen

  513. the Lord

  514. but he said

  515. to them

  516. unless I see

  517. the nail marks

  518. in his hands

  519. and put my

  520. finger

  521. where the nails

  522. were

  523. and put my

  524. hand into

  525. his side

  526. I will

  527. not believe

  528. it

  529. in other words

  530. I will believe

  531. in Jesus

  532. if he

  533. shows himself

  534. to me

  535. his response

  536. to the news

  537. is absolute

  538. he makes

  539. his terms

  540. his demands

  541. in absolute

  542. terms

  543. unless I see

  544. I place

  545. my hands

  546. I will

  547. not believe

  548. he demands

  549. here in this

  550. moment

  551. exhaustive

  552. proof

  553. rather than

  554. sufficient

  555. evidence

  556. belief in

  557. Jesus

  558. belief in the

  559. resurrection

  560. comes down

  561. in the end

  562. as we see

  563. here with

  564. Thomas

  565. not just

  566. to a matter

  567. of evidence

  568. but a battle

  569. of the will

  570. Thomas

  571. rejects

  572. the witness

  573. of 10

  574. of

  575. and more

  576. in fact

  577. more than

  578. 10 of

  579. his trusted

  580. friends

  581. and he

  582. dictates

  583. in absolute

  584. terms

  585. to God

  586. about what's

  587. required

  588. for him

  589. to believe

  590. now we

  591. aren't told

  592. specifically

  593. in John

  594. 20

  595. why Thomas

  596. was so

  597. skeptical

  598. so anything

  599. I say

  600. is speculation

  601. but I'm

  602. going to

  603. speculate

  604. anyway

  605. because it

  606. might be

  607. helpful

  608. for us

  609. so let

  610. me

  611. speculate

  612. maybe it

  613. was his

  614. personality

  615. that's

  616. maybe why

  617. he's doubting

  618. he's a

  619. personality

  620. thing

  621. maybe he

  622. was well

  623. you know

  624. one of

  625. those

  626. what the

  627. personality

  628. tests

  629. call a

  630. sensing

  631. person

  632. sensing

  633. people

  634. paying

  635. more

  636. attention

  637. to

  638. physical

  639. reality

  640. to

  641. facts

  642. to

  643. hard

  644. evidence

  645. the

  646. opposite

  647. is the

  648. intuitive

  649. person

  650. who

  651. goes

  652. on

  653. perceptions

  654. gut

  655. feel

  656. instincts

  657. that

  658. may be

  659. a

  660. personality

  661. thing

  662. another

  663. alternative

  664. is that

  665. he was

  666. skeptical

  667. about

  668. the

  669. supernatural

  670. unlikely

  671. but

  672. possible

  673. you know

  674. dead people

  675. don't come

  676. back to

  677. life and

  678. that's

  679. it

  680. it's a

  681. common

  682. western

  683. view

  684. in fact

  685. it's

  686. primarily

  687. just a

  688. western

  689. view

  690. a very

  691. small

  692. minority

  693. of our

  694. world

  695. have

  696. that

  697. view

  698. and

  699. Thomas

  700. wasn't

  701. a

  702. westerner

  703. so it's

  704. unlikely

  705. what we

  706. tend to

  707. think when

  708. we come

  709. to this

  710. text

  711. as

  712. westerners

  713. we assume

  714. that

  715. Thomas's

  716. doubting

  717. here is

  718. an

  719. intellectual

  720. one

  721. but

  722. skepticism

  723. is

  724. not

  725. simply

  726. intellectual

  727. so let

  728. me

  729. speculate

  730. imagine

  731. for

  732. instance

  733. that

  734. someone

  735. very

  736. close

  737. to

  738. you

  739. is

  740. dying

  741. in fact

  742. some

  743. of you

  744. may

  745. not

  746. even

  747. need

  748. to

  749. imagine

  750. much

  751. and you

  752. finally

  753. accepted

  754. that

  755. all

  756. hope

  757. of

  758. recovery

  759. is

  760. lost

  761. and

  762. your

  763. loved

  764. one

  765. is

  766. going

  767. to

  768. die

  769. it's

  770. shocking

  771. news

  772. and

  773. then

  774. all

  775. of

  776. a

  777. sudden

  778. someone

  779. says

  780. comes

  781. in

  782. with

  783. some

  784. new

  785. news

  786. there's

  787. a

  788. possible

  789. cure

  790. in

  791. a

  792. clinic

  793. on

  794. the

  795. other

  796. side

  797. of

  798. the

  799. world

  800. and

  801. you

  802. had

  803. there

  804. a

  805. hope

  806. of

  807. recovery

  808. there's

  809. a

  810. hope

  811. of

  812. recovery

  813. here

  814. then

  815. your

  816. hopes

  817. are

  818. dashed

  819. when

  820. you

  821. realize

  822. that

  823. you're

  824. going

  825. to

  826. die

  827. and

  828. with

  829. the

  830. news

  831. of

  832. a

  833. possible

  834. cure

  835. most

  836. people

  837. in

  838. that

  839. moment

  840. don't

  841. go

  842. fantastic

  843. you've

  844. gotten

  845. used to

  846. the fact

  847. that you're

  848. going to

  849. die

  850. most

  851. people

  852. do

  853. not

  854. go

  855. fantastic

  856. news

  857. most

  858. people

  859. cannot

  860. bear

  861. the

  862. concept

  863. of

  864. their

  865. hopes

  866. being

  867. raised

  868. only

  869. to be

  870. dashed

  871. again

  872. most

  873. people

  874. do

  875. not

  876. step

  877. out

  878. in

  879. hope

  880. for

  881. fear

  882. of

  883. losing

  884. again

  885. and

  886. maybe

  887. this

  888. is

  889. what's

  890. happening

  891. with

  892. Thomas

  893. there

  894. is

  895. no

  896. indication

  897. in

  898. the

  899. New

  900. Testament

  901. at

  902. all

  903. up

  904. until

  905. this

  906. point

  907. that

  908. Thomas

  909. did

  910. not

  911. love

  912. Jesus

  913. as

  914. much

  915. as

  916. the

  917. other

  918. disciples

  919. no

  920. reason

  921. to

  922. believe

  923. that

  924. he

  925. wasn't

  926. as

  927. devastated

  928. as

  929. the

  930. other

  931. disciples

  932. at

  933. the

  934. execution

  935. of

  936. Jesus

  937. and

  938. now

  939. they

  940. come

  941. along

  942. and

  943. say

  944. hey

  945. Thomas

  946. in

  947. his

  948. grief

  949. hey

  950. Thomas

  951. good

  952. news

  953. he's

  954. alive

  955. and

  956. so

  957. maybe

  958. Thomas

  959. in

  960. this

  961. moment

  962. in

  963. the

  964. upper

  965. room

  966. is

  967. don't

  968. you

  969. dare

  970. get

  971. my

  972. hopes

  973. up

  974. don't

  975. you

  976. dare

  977. get

  978. my

  979. hopes

  980. up

  981. I'm

  982. just

  983. coming

  984. to

  985. terms

  986. with

  987. the

  988. fact

  989. he's

  990. dead

  991. maybe

  992. he

  993. was

  994. afraid

  995. to

  996. hope

  997. in

  998. the

  999. same

  1000. way

  1001. that

  1002. many

  1003. in

  1004. our

  1005. world

  1006. are

  1007. afraid

  1008. to

  1009. hope

  1010. it

  1011. may

  1012. be

  1013. our

  1014. narrow

  1015. secular

  1016. western

  1017. worldview

  1018. that

  1019. says

  1020. it

  1021. cannot

  1022. happen

  1023. I

  1024. have

  1025. no

  1026. hope

  1027. it

  1028. might

  1029. be

  1030. a

  1031. personality

  1032. thing

  1033. that

  1034. says

  1035. I

  1036. need

  1037. more

  1038. evidence

  1039. it

  1040. may

  1041. be

  1042. a

  1043. heart

  1044. that

  1045. is

  1046. afraid

  1047. to

  1048. be

  1049. drawn

  1050. into

  1051. something

  1052. only

  1053. to

  1054. be

  1055. disappointed

  1056. in

  1057. the

  1058. end

  1059. Thomas

  1060. believed

  1061. with

  1062. joy

  1063. he's

  1064. the

  1065. greatest

  1066. doubter

  1067. and

  1068. yet

  1069. his

  1070. confession

  1071. of

  1072. faith

  1073. becomes

  1074. the

  1075. greatest

  1076. look

  1077. at

  1078. verse

  1079. 26

  1080. a

  1081. week

  1082. later

  1083. his

  1084. disciples

  1085. were

  1086. in

  1087. the

  1088. house

  1089. again

  1090. and

  1091. Thomas

  1092. was

  1093. with

  1094. them

  1095. and

  1096. though

  1097. the

  1098. doors

  1099. were

  1100. locked

  1101. Jesus

  1102. came

  1103. and

  1104. stood

  1105. among

  1106. them

  1107. and

  1108. said

  1109. peace

  1110. be

  1111. with

  1112. you

  1113. and

  1114. he

  1115. said

  1116. to

  1117. Thomas

  1118. put

  1119. your

  1120. finger

  1121. here

  1122. see

  1123. my

  1124. hands

  1125. reach

  1126. out

  1127. your

  1128. hand

  1129. and

  1130. put

  1131. it

  1132. into

  1133. my

  1134. side

  1135. stop

  1136. doubting

  1137. and

  1138. believe

  1139. and

  1140. then

  1141. Thomas

  1142. said

  1143. to

  1144. him

  1145. my

  1146. Lord

  1147. my

  1148. God

  1149. it's

  1150. a

  1151. remarkable

  1152. statement

  1153. Thomas

  1154. is a

  1155. Jewish

  1156. man

  1157. and

  1158. to

  1159. call

  1160. another

  1161. human

  1162. being

  1163. just

  1164. a

  1165. mere

  1166. human

  1167. being

  1168. not

  1169. just

  1170. your

  1171. Lord

  1172. but

  1173. your

  1174. God

  1175. is

  1176. incomprehensible

  1177. unless

  1178. Thomas

  1179. has seen

  1180. something

  1181. absolutely

  1182. life

  1183. changing

  1184. there

  1185. is no

  1186. higher

  1187. confession

  1188. of faith

  1189. in

  1190. Jesus

  1191. Christ

  1192. in

  1193. all

  1194. of

  1195. the

  1196. scriptures

  1197. in

  1198. my

  1199. view

  1200. so

  1201. that

  1202. brings

  1203. me

  1204. to

  1205. the

  1206. who

  1207. cares

  1208. question

  1209. for

  1210. some

  1211. some

  1212. doubt

  1213. is

  1214. not a

  1215. matter

  1216. of

  1217. having

  1218. not

  1219. having

  1220. enough

  1221. sufficient

  1222. evidence

  1223. it's

  1224. more

  1225. a

  1226. matter

  1227. of

  1228. claims

  1229. that

  1230. Jesus

  1231. has

  1232. made

  1233. about

  1234. himself

  1235. his

  1236. mission

  1237. and

  1238. therefore

  1239. what

  1240. his

  1241. claims

  1242. are

  1243. on

  1244. my

  1245. life

  1246. that

  1247. is

  1248. it's

  1249. about

  1250. the

  1251. heart

  1252. and

  1253. the

  1254. will

  1255. there

  1256. is

  1257. a

  1258. comfortable

  1259. place

  1260. of

  1261. happy

  1262. ignorance

  1263. if

  1264. I

  1265. ignore

  1266. the

  1267. evidence

  1268. I

  1269. can

  1270. just

  1271. go

  1272. on

  1273. and

  1274. live

  1275. life

  1276. my

  1277. way

  1278. this

  1279. is

  1280. broadly

  1281. the

  1282. meaning

  1283. of

  1284. the

  1285. resurrection

  1286. Thomas

  1287. says

  1288. to

  1289. him

  1290. my

  1291. Lord

  1292. and

  1293. my

  1294. God

  1295. notice

  1296. this

  1297. notice

  1298. what's

  1299. changed

  1300. with

  1301. Thomas

  1302. his

  1303. first

  1304. words

  1305. were not

  1306. okay

  1307. Jesus

  1308. Jesus

  1309. said to

  1310. him

  1311. put your

  1312. hand

  1313. here

  1314. put your

  1315. fist in

  1316. the side

  1317. and

  1318. he doesn't

  1319. go

  1320. oh

  1321. the

  1322. evidence

  1323. his

  1324. immediate

  1325. response

  1326. is

  1327. my

  1328. Lord

  1329. and

  1330. my

  1331. God

  1332. the

  1333. whole

  1334. issue

  1335. that

  1336. Thomas

  1337. had

  1338. was

  1339. I

  1340. want

  1341. to

  1342. see

  1343. Jesus

  1344. for

  1345. myself

  1346. and

  1347. I

  1348. will

  1349. not

  1350. ever

  1351. believe

  1352. until

  1353. I

  1354. touch

  1355. those

  1356. wounds

  1357. Jesus

  1358. shows

  1359. up

  1360. and

  1361. Thomas

  1362. doesn't

  1363. even

  1364. touch

  1365. him

  1366. the

  1367. wounds

  1368. on

  1369. Jesus

  1370. were

  1371. not

  1372. so

  1373. much

  1374. more

  1375. than

  1376. the

  1377. evidence

  1378. of

  1379. the

  1380. resurrection

  1381. they

  1382. were

  1383. evidence

  1384. of

  1385. something

  1386. so

  1387. much

  1388. more

  1389. powerful

  1390. for

  1391. Thomas

  1392. what

  1393. he

  1394. is

  1395. saying

  1396. in

  1397. that

  1398. moment

  1399. in

  1400. encountering

  1401. the

  1402. risen

  1403. Jesus

  1404. is

  1405. that

  1406. everything

  1407. you

  1408. said

  1409. about

  1410. yourself

  1411. is

  1412. true

  1413. everything

  1414. you said

  1415. about

  1416. me

  1417. is

  1418. true

  1419. everything

  1420. you said

  1421. about

  1422. this

  1423. world

  1424. is

  1425. true

  1426. he

  1427. is

  1428. God

  1429. he

  1430. is

  1431. the

  1432. king

  1433. of

  1434. the

  1435. universe

  1436. he

  1437. is

  1438. my

  1439. lord

  1440. he

  1441. is

  1442. my

  1443. king

  1444. he

  1445. is

  1446. my

  1447. boss

  1448. he

  1449. is

  1450. my

  1451. ruler

  1452. he

  1453. is

  1454. my

  1455. god

  1456. he

  1457. is

  1458. my

  1459. savior

  1460. the

  1461. resurrection

  1462. means

  1463. that

  1464. what

  1465. Jesus

  1466. has

  1467. promised

  1468. he

  1469. delivered

  1470. Thomas

  1471. has

  1472. just

  1473. joyfully

  1474. discovered

  1475. that

  1476. the

  1477. wounds

  1478. on

  1479. the

  1480. cross

  1481. on

  1482. Jesus

  1483. that

  1484. he

  1485. thought

  1486. had

  1487. ruined

  1488. his

  1489. life

  1490. those

  1491. wounds

  1492. have

  1493. in

  1494. fact

  1495. saved

  1496. his

  1497. life

  1498. this

  1499. is

  1500. the

  1501. answer

  1502. to

  1503. the

  1504. so

  1505. what

  1506. question

  1507. the

  1508. resurrection

  1509. means

  1510. that

  1511. everything

  1512. Jesus

  1513. said

  1514. about

  1515. himself

  1516. is

  1517. right

  1518. and

  1519. true

  1520. he

  1521. is

  1522. the

  1523. way

  1524. for

  1525. humanity

  1526. to be

  1527. reunited

  1528. to

  1529. their

  1530. creator

  1531. the

  1532. resurrection

  1533. means

  1534. that

  1535. human

  1536. guilt

  1537. and

  1538. shame

  1539. has

  1540. been

  1541. dealt

  1542. with

  1543. finally

  1544. and

  1545. fully

  1546. through

  1547. Jesus

  1548. satisfying

  1549. God's

  1550. justice

  1551. on the

  1552. cross

  1553. for

  1554. us

  1555. it

  1556. means

  1557. that

  1558. death

  1559. has

  1560. not

  1561. only

  1562. been

  1563. confronted

  1564. but

  1565. it's

  1566. actually

  1567. been

  1568. conquered

  1569. by

  1570. Jesus

  1571. it

  1572. means

  1573. that

  1574. new

  1575. and

  1576. true

  1577. life

  1578. can

  1579. be

  1580. experienced

  1581. before

  1582. death

  1583. and

  1584. eternal

  1585. life

  1586. beyond

  1587. death

  1588. it

  1589. means

  1590. that

  1591. hope

  1592. for

  1593. better

  1594. things

  1595. have

  1596. gone

  1597. from

  1598. a

  1599. category

  1600. of

  1601. oh

  1602. I

  1603. hope

  1604. so

  1605. to

  1606. an

  1607. absolute

  1608. definite

  1609. certainty

  1610. it

  1611. means

  1612. that

  1613. a new

  1614. heavens

  1615. and

  1616. a new

  1617. earth

  1618. where

  1619. those

  1620. who

  1621. trust

  1622. in

  1623. Christ

  1624. will

  1625. live

  1626. forever

  1627. like

  1628. he

  1629. lives

  1630. forever

  1631. is

  1632. just

  1633. a

  1634. matter

  1635. of

  1636. time

  1637. that's

  1638. what

  1639. Jesus

  1640. offers

  1641. everyone

  1642. who

  1643. trusts

  1644. in

  1645. him

  1646. a

  1647. number

  1648. of

  1649. chapters

  1650. earlier

  1651. in

  1652. John's

  1653. account

  1654. of

  1655. this

  1656. good

  1657. news

  1658. we

  1659. have

  1660. Jesus

  1661. declaring

  1662. the

  1663. life

  1664. changing

  1665. news

  1666. of

  1667. Easter

  1668. he

  1669. says

  1670. I

  1671. am

  1672. the

  1673. resurrection

  1674. and

  1675. the

  1676. life

  1677. the

  1678. one

  1679. who

  1680. believes

  1681. in

  1682. me

  1683. will

  1684. live

  1685. even

  1686. though

  1687. they

  1688. die

  1689. and

  1690. whoever

  1691. lives

  1692. by

  1693. believing

  1694. in

  1695. me

  1696. will

  1697. never

  1698. die

  1699. it

  1700. means

  1701. that

  1702. Jesus

  1703. isn't

  1704. just

  1705. one

  1706. option

  1707. amongst

  1708. any

  1709. and many

  1710. that

  1711. you

  1712. might

  1713. have

  1714. to

  1715. turn

  1716. to

  1717. something

  1718. incredibly

  1719. unique

  1720. and

  1721. life

  1722. changing

  1723. and

  1724. worldview

  1725. shaping

  1726. has

  1727. happened

  1728. in the

  1729. resurrection

  1730. of

  1731. Jesus

  1732. that

  1733. is

  1734. what

  1735. Thomas

  1736. has

  1737. discovered

  1738. that's

  1739. what

  1740. people

  1741. across

  1742. this

  1743. world

  1744. for

  1745. 2000

  1746. years

  1747. have

  1748. discovered

  1749. from

  1750. every

  1751. cultural

  1752. group

  1753. and

  1754. people

  1755. group

  1756. there

  1757. is

  1758. hope

  1759. in

  1760. Jesus

  1761. Christ

  1762. so

  1763. lastly

  1764. how do

  1765. we

  1766. discover

  1767. this

  1768. certain

  1769. hope

  1770. firstly

  1771. it's

  1772. important

  1773. to

  1774. listen

  1775. to

  1776. the

  1777. eyewitness

  1778. accounts

  1779. don't

  1780. don't

  1781. cast

  1782. them

  1783. off

  1784. we

  1785. are

  1786. told

  1787. here

  1788. in

  1789. John

  1790. 20

  1791. that

  1792. Thomas

  1793. wasn't

  1794. there

  1795. when

  1796. Jesus

  1797. first

  1798. appeared

  1799. to

  1800. the

  1801. disciples

  1802. one

  1803. week

  1804. later

  1805. Jesus

  1806. shows

  1807. up

  1808. again

  1809. with

  1810. Thomas

  1811. present

  1812. during

  1813. the

  1814. week

  1815. in

  1816. between

  1817. we

  1818. are

  1819. told

  1820. in

  1821. verse

  1822. 25

  1823. of

  1824. John

  1825. 20

  1826. that

  1827. the

  1828. other

  1829. disciples

  1830. kept

  1831. telling

  1832. him

  1833. we

  1834. have

  1835. seen

  1836. him

  1837. we

  1838. have

  1839. seen

  1840. him

  1841. we

  1842. have

  1843. seen

  1844. him

  1845. during

  1846. that

  1847. week

  1848. Thomas

  1849. was

  1850. in

  1851. the

  1852. exact

  1853. same

  1854. spot

  1855. that

  1856. you

  1857. and

  1858. I

  1859. are

  1860. in

  1861. right

  1862. now

  1863. and

  1864. people

  1865. have

  1866. been

  1867. in

  1868. for

  1869. 2,000

  1870. years

  1871. like

  1872. him

  1873. we

  1874. have

  1875. the

  1876. eyewitness

  1877. accounts

  1878. we

  1879. have

  1880. the

  1881. eyewitness

  1882. accounts

  1883. we

  1884. have

  1885. the

  1886. accounts

  1887. of

  1888. the

  1889. people

  1890. who

  1891. were

  1892. there

  1893. access

  1894. to

  1895. them

  1896. access

  1897. direct

  1898. access

  1899. to

  1900. the

  1901. people

  1902. who

  1903. had

  1904. direct

  1905. access

  1906. to

  1907. Jesus

  1908. the

  1909. eyewitness

  1910. accounts

  1911. have been

  1912. written

  1913. down

  1914. for us

  1915. and

  1916. preserved

  1917. through

  1918. history

  1919. in

  1920. the

  1921. New

  1922. Testament

  1923. if

  1924. you

  1925. haven't

  1926. got

  1927. one

  1928. you

  1929. can

  1930. grab

  1931. one

  1932. of

  1933. those

  1934. out

  1935. in

  1936. the

  1937. table

  1938. out

  1939. in

  1940. the

  1941. atrium

  1942. as

  1943. well

  1944. and

  1945. read

  1946. it

  1947. take

  1948. it

  1949. home

  1950. and

  1951. read

  1952. it

  1953. for

  1954. yourself

  1955. a

  1956. number

  1957. of

  1958. years

  1959. ago

  1960. it

  1961. was

  1962. common

  1963. accusation

  1964. that

  1965. the

  1966. gospel

  1967. accounts

  1968. the

  1969. historical

  1970. biographies

  1971. of

  1972. Jesus

  1973. the

  1974. gospel

  1975. accounts

  1976. were

  1977. fables

  1978. that

  1979. were

  1980. written

  1981. down

  1982. long

  1983. long

  1984. after

  1985. the

  1986. events

  1987. and

  1988. so

  1989. are

  1990. not

  1991. trustworthy

  1992. the

  1993. reality

  1994. is

  1995. enormous

  1996. amount

  1997. and I

  1998. mean

  1999. an

  2000. enormous

  2001. amount

  2002. of

  2003. scholarship

  2004. that

  2005. actually

  2006. argues

  2007. the

  2008. gospels

  2009. do not

  2010. even

  2011. carry

  2012. one

  2013. mark

  2014. of

  2015. fiction

  2016. in

  2017. them

  2018. written

  2019. by

  2020. people

  2021. who

  2022. know

  2023. their

  2024. stuff

  2025. not

  2026. even

  2027. a

  2028. single

  2029. mark

  2030. of

  2031. fiction

  2032. they

  2033. have

  2034. all

  2035. the

  2036. marks

  2037. of

  2038. oral

  2039. history

  2040. and

  2041. eyewitness

  2042. testimony

  2043. and

  2044. when

  2045. these

  2046. events

  2047. were

  2048. written

  2049. down

  2050. nearly

  2051. all

  2052. of

  2053. the

  2054. eyewitnesses

  2055. were

  2056. still

  2057. alive

  2058. and

  2059. could

  2060. vouch

  2061. for

  2062. everything

  2063. that

  2064. was

  2065. written

  2066. John

  2067. who

  2068. wrote

  2069. his

  2070. biography

  2071. was

  2072. one

  2073. of

  2074. the

  2075. eyewitnesses

  2076. and

  2077. this

  2078. is

  2079. what

  2080. he

  2081. says

  2082. about

  2083. what

  2084. it

  2085. means

  2086. to

  2087. come

  2088. to

  2089. certain

  2090. hope

  2091. in

  2092. Jesus

  2093. Christ

  2094. it

  2095. was

  2096. read

  2097. out

  2098. to

  2099. us

  2100. John

    John 20:30

  2101. chapter

  2102. 20

  2103. verse

  2104. 30

  2105. one

  2106. of

  2107. the

  2108. last

  2109. things

  2110. that

  2111. was

  2112. read

  2113. to

  2114. us

  2115. what

  2116. he

  2117. is

  2118. saying

  2119. is

  2120. that

  2121. what

  2122. is

  2123. written

  2124. in

  2125. the

  2126. biography

  2127. of

  2128. Jesus

  2129. life

  2130. his

  2131. ministry

  2132. his

  2133. death

  2134. and

  2135. his

  2136. resurrection

  2137. by

  2138. eyewitnesses

  2139. account

  2140. is

  2141. all

  2142. that

  2143. you

  2144. need

  2145. for

  2146. certain

  2147. hope

  2148. you

  2149. don't

  2150. need

  2151. anything

  2152. more

  2153. for

  2154. certain

  2155. hope

  2156. than

  2157. what

  2158. has

  2159. been

  2160. recorded

  2161. and

  2162. that

  2163. makes

  2164. pure

  2165. sense

  2166. doesn't

  2167. it

  2168. I

  2169. mean

  2170. doesn't

  2171. it

  2172. make

  2173. pure

  2174. sense

  2175. it

  2176. is

  2177. in

  2178. fact

  2179. how

  2180. we

  2181. operate

  2182. every

  2183. single

  2184. day

  2185. of

  2186. our

  2187. life

  2188. what

  2189. I

  2190. mean

  2191. is

  2192. this

  2193. how

  2194. many

  2195. things

  2196. that

  2197. you

  2198. believe

  2199. actually

  2200. happened

  2201. in

  2202. world

  2203. history

  2204. that

  2205. you

  2206. actually

  2207. didn't

  2208. see

  2209. how

  2210. many

  2211. of

  2212. it

  2213. all

  2214. of

  2215. it

  2216. all

  2217. of

  2218. it

  2219. we

  2220. actually

  2221. believe

  2222. eyewitness

  2223. testimony

  2224. that has

  2225. been

  2226. written

  2227. down

  2228. by

  2229. historically

  2230. reliable

  2231. authors

  2232. and so

  2233. why

  2234. is it

  2235. that we

  2236. don't

  2237. do it

  2238. with

  2239. Jesus

  2240. why

  2241. because

  2242. it's not

  2243. about

  2244. historical

  2245. evidence

  2246. it's about

  2247. a battle

  2248. of the

  2249. will

  2250. and who's

  2251. in

  2252. control

  2253. of

  2254. my

  2255. life

  2256. we

  2257. don't

  2258. need

  2259. to know

  2260. anything

  2261. more

  2262. than

  2263. what

  2264. is

  2265. written

  2266. in

  2267. John's

  2268. gospel

  2269. or

  2270. any

  2271. of

  2272. the

  2273. other

  2274. biographies

  2275. of

  2276. Jesus

  2277. to

  2278. see

  2279. and

  2280. believe

  2281. and so

  2282. give

  2283. it

  2284. a

  2285. read

  2286. get

  2287. yourself

  2288. immersed

  2289. in it

  2290. and

  2291. see

  2292. read

  2293. them

  2294. as

  2295. eyewitness

  2296. accounts

  2297. and

  2298. think

  2299. the

  2300. second

  2301. thing

  2302. that we

  2303. need to

  2304. do

  2305. to

  2306. move

  2307. from

  2308. doubt

  2309. into

  2310. a

  2311. place

  2312. of

  2313. certain

  2314. hope

  2315. is

  2316. to

  2317. drop

  2318. our

  2319. conditions

  2320. every

  2321. single

  2322. one

  2323. of

  2324. us

  2325. moves

  2326. towards

  2327. Jesus

  2328. with

  2329. a

  2330. set

  2331. of

  2332. conditions

  2333. no

  2334. one

  2335. ever

  2336. goes

  2337. to

  2338. Jesus

  2339. just

  2340. because

  2341. he

  2342. is

  2343. awesome

  2344. and

  2345. he's

  2346. great

  2347. and

  2348. he's

  2349. the

  2350. saver

  2351. of

  2352. humanity

  2353. just

  2354. purely

  2355. on

  2356. those

  2357. terms

  2358. no

  2359. one

  2360. goes

  2361. to him

  2362. purely

  2363. on

  2364. his

  2365. sake

  2366. we

  2367. always

  2368. move

  2369. towards

  2370. him

  2371. because

  2372. we

  2373. want

  2374. something

  2375. which

  2376. means

  2377. we

  2378. have

  2379. conditions

  2380. I've

  2381. known

  2382. people

  2383. who

  2384. have

  2385. refused

  2386. to

  2387. make

  2388. any

  2389. move

  2390. towards

  2391. Jesus

  2392. because

  2393. it

  2394. would

  2395. mean

  2396. that

  2397. they

  2398. would

  2399. need

  2400. to

  2401. repair

  2402. a

  2403. relationship

  2404. that's

  2405. gone

  2406. wrong

  2407. and

  2408. they

  2409. don't

  2410. want

  2411. to

  2412. repair

  2413. it

  2414. it

  2415. would

  2416. mean

  2417. they

  2418. have

  2419. to

  2420. change

  2421. a

  2422. habit

  2423. and

  2424. they

  2425. don't

  2426. want

  2427. to

  2428. change

  2429. that

  2430. habit

  2431. it

  2432. means

  2433. to

  2434. confess

  2435. sin

  2436. and

  2437. they

  2438. love

  2439. it

  2440. and

  2441. that's

  2442. all

  2443. of

  2444. us

  2445. we

  2446. all

  2447. come

  2448. with

  2449. yeah

  2450. Jesus

  2451. I

  2452. know

  2453. you're

  2454. offering

  2455. me

  2456. eternal

  2457. life

  2458. it

  2459. sounds

  2460. fantastic

  2461. but

  2462. frankly

  2463. I

  2464. don't

  2465. want

  2466. it

  2467. to

  2468. disrupt

  2469. my

  2470. family

  2471. I

  2472. don't

  2473. want

  2474. it

  2475. to

  2476. hurt

  2477. my

  2478. career

  2479. and

  2480. I

  2481. don't

  2482. want

  2483. it

  2484. to

  2485. interrupt

  2486. my

  2487. long

  2488. weekends

  2489. we

  2490. need

  2491. to

  2492. drop

  2493. our

  2494. conditions

  2495. because

  2496. every

  2497. condition

  2498. says

  2499. I

  2500. will

  2501. love

  2502. you

  2503. Jesus

  2504. if

  2505. and

  2506. that

  2507. if

  2508. is

  2509. life

  2510. changing

  2511. Jesus

  2512. did

  2513. not

  2514. do

  2515. that

  2516. for

  2517. us

  2518. he

  2519. loved

  2520. us

  2521. unconditionally

  2522. the

  2523. death

  2524. of

  2525. Jesus

  2526. was

  2529. of

  2531. Jesus

  2532. died

  2533. he

  2534. rose

  2535. to

  2537. us

  2558. historically

  2559. reliable

  2560. and

  2561. experientially

  2562. satisfying

  2563. as we

  2564. navigate

  2565. life

  2574. God

  2584. God
