  1. Good morning, everyone. My name's James. It's nice to see you this morning.

  2. The hashtag MeToo movement began in 2017 to give voice to women bringing to light issues of sexual harassment and abuse.

  3. In 2020, the Black Lives Matter marches rose to give voice to those who had been harassed and abused because of their ethnicity.

  4. More recently, there has been a campaign to stop anti-Asian hate and abuse.

  5. Even in the last week in Sydney, someone had carved into a footpath, Asians go home.

  6. And so this sentiment is happening even here in Sydney.

  7. In the last couple of weeks in Australia, tens of thousands of people marched against the abuse of women.

  8. Those who don't have power and freedom, those who have been abused in their lives, have been responding.

  9. They are calling for social issues to change.

  10. Whilst the coronavirus pandemic hit many people very hard, hit people's...

  11. They lost houses, people have lost jobs, people have been hit financially,

  12. let alone those who have had their health damaged and lost their lives.

  13. Yet, the richest in our society have also gotten richer.

  14. The three richest men in the United States,

  15. Mark Zuckerberg, who owns Facebook,

  16. Elon Musk, who owns Tesla and, you know, spaceships,

  17. and the third is Jeff Bezos, who owns most things, and Amazon.

  18. All three of those in the last year have more than doubled their wealth.

  19. We see social abuses.

  20. We see racial inequality.

  21. And we want to see a society that is changed.

  22. I want to see a society that is changed.

  23. In the Western culture that we live in,

  24. there is unrest and dissatisfaction about relationships.

  25. There is conflict between people at the workplace,

  26. conflict at home, conflict between friends and marriages.

  27. There is tension in the social fabric of who we are as people.

  28. Each of us trying to get ahead, trying to earn more money,

  29. trying to have shinier things.

  30. There is tension economically between classes,

  31. between those who would be considered working class

  32. and middle class and upper class.

  33. There is tension and unrest and dissatisfaction

  34. between different ethnicities and nationalities.

  35. And for me, personally, I can feel the pull to become a Twitter warrior

  36. and to have arguments with people online.

  37. I can feel the pull to go to marches.

  38. And yet, I can feel another pull,

  39. which is just to be totally passive.

  40. Because these social issues seem so large

  41. that they are just impossible to change.

  42. So how are we to view these issues

  43. that are not only around us, but we are also part of?

  44. What does God have to say to this?

  45. And how does a Christian respond to these issues?

  46. Last week was Easter.

  47. And we were reminded at Easter of God's goodness to us.

  48. His love, His grace.

  49. Not only that Jesus would die,

  50. but that He would be raised

  51. so that our death has been paid for

  52. and we are promised new life.

  53. The resurrection is such a wonderful,

  54. world-changing event

  55. that it not only changes our vertical relationship with God.

  56. Not only do we have a relationship with God

  57. that is restored, redeemed,

  58. now we can know Him

  59. and we can be made more like Him,

  60. but it also impacts our horizontal relationships.

  61. The resurrection changes how we relate to God,

  62. but it also changes how we relate to other people.

  63. And so only in the death and resurrection of Jesus

  64. do we have the resources to see

  65. the transformation of relationships,

  66. the transformation of our society,

  67. of the church being a powerful sign to the world,

  68. of the people that God is making us to be.

  69. And so today, over the next 20, 30 minutes,

  70. I'm going to be touching on some large issues.

  71. Racism, economic inequality.

  72. Unfortunately, I can't preach for an hour and a half

  73. to go into all of these very deeply,

  74. but please come and speak with me after

  75. if you'd like to talk more about these.

  76. So we're going to speak about

  77. the resurrection hope we have for relationships

  78. before we look at the resurrection hope

  79. for racism and different classes.

  80. And as we do this,

  81. we should be praying and asking God for help.

  82. So let's pray.

  83. Dear Heavenly Father,

  84. Lord, I thank you so much for our last weekend

  85. and for the reminder of Easter,

  86. of your goodness to us at the cross

  87. and in the resurrection.

  88. Father, as we consider the implications

  89. for us across our lives,

  90. give us much understanding of ourself

  91. and love of other people, Lord.

  92. Amen.

  93. Please have your Bibles open.

  94. We're going to be spending time

  95. in those three parts of the Bible that Anne read.

  96. And we're going to start in 1 Corinthians.

  97. In this letter, Paul is writing this letter

  98. rebuking a church for many issues.

  99. Most of their issues come down

  100. to how they are relating between people.

  101. You know, they might have the vertical relationship

  102. with God sorted,

  103. but their horizontal relationships with other people

  104. are in a dire state.

  105. So as he writes in chapter 6, verse 1,

  106. if any of you has a dispute with another,

  107. do you dare take it before the ungodly for judgment

  108. instead of being the Lord's people?

  109. It seems that the social relationships

  110. between people of the church have broken down.

  111. Those people who should be loving,

  112. who should be forgiving each other

  113. because they know how much they've been forgiven by Jesus,

  114. they are not forgiving each other.

  115. And so instead of dealing with this conflict,

  116. they've been taking each other to court.

  117. They've been suing each other

  118. and they're being judged not by somebody else in the church,

  119. not by a wise Christian brother,

  120. but somebody that's totally unrelated.

  121. And so chapter 6, verse 2,

  122. do you not know that the Lord's people will judge the world?

  123. And if you are to judge the world,

  124. are you not competent to judge trivial cases?

  125. Do you not know that we will judge angels?

  126. And how much more the things of this life?

  127. Paul is saying that at the resurrection,

  128. there will be a final judgment

  129. and Christians will have a role to judge the world.

  130. And yet these Christians

  131. couldn't even judge trivial cases amongst themselves.

  132. You know, there's like a case of a hole between two neighbors

  133. and a donkey fell down it.

  134. And so instead of forgiving and reconciling their relationship,

  135. they're taking each other to court.

  136. You know, someone hasn't paid the right amount.

  137. They've got unequal weights on their scales.

  138. And so instead of talking amongst themselves,

  139. they're taking each other to court.

  140. And so many of these issues that they worried about

  141. are trivial in comparison to the coming resurrection.

  142. Now, Paul's not saying that there is no place for lawsuits.

  143. There is a place for lawyers and lawsuits.

  144. Seeking justice is important.

  145. But it's the attitude of the vengeful,

  146. you know, he said, she said, you owe me more.

  147. You know, you owe me, you know, $13, $28.

  148. It's the quickness to sue and litigate.

  149. It's part of an unhealthy heart attitude.

  150. It's the spirit of the age of the church in Corinth

  151. where people wanted to get what they were owed.

  152. And I also think it's the spirit of our age here in Sydney.

  153. If the Christians in the church who were supposed to know forgiveness

  154. and love from God at the cost of Jesus himself,

  155. if these people couldn't even forgive each other,

  156. what hope is there for people that aren't part of our church?

  157. What hope is there for people in the rest of society

  158. to deal with their relationships,

  159. to have any hope of seeing reconciliation?

  160. The call of the gospel is to lay down our desire to get what we are owed.

  161. The beauty of the gospel can be seen when Christians forgive each other.

  162. You know, think, you know, last week we saw Jesus on the cross.

  163. He prays to God, Father, forgive them.

  164. They don't know what they do.

  165. The Abdullah family who had a person drive into their car

  166. and saw four of their children of the family be killed

  167. seeing that family forgive the driver.

  168. The beauty of the gospel can be seen when Christians forgive.

  169. And the resurrection is the key

  170. to healing our relationships with each other

  171. in two different ways.

  172. Firstly, when we know how much we have been forgiven,

  173. it helps us to lay down our judgment of others.

  174. When we know how much we've been forgiven,

  175. it helps us to lay down our judgment of others.

  176. And secondly, knowing that God is a good judge

  177. helps us not to feel that we need to judge.

  178. Knowing that God has got the judgment.

  179. It's not in the kind of way that it's like,

  180. oh, I'm not going to judge because God's going to get you.

  181. I'm going to leave it to him because he'll take care of you.

  182. Don't worry.

  183. You know, big brother, you know, my God,

  184. he's going to get you.

  185. Lightning bolts are coming for you.

  186. No, when there's conflict, it's,

  187. well, I know God is a good judge

  188. and he will take care of this.

  189. So I don't need to judge in his place.

  190. Instead, I can forgive.

  191. But I know personally

  192. that when I seek to forgive,

  193. there's often two other things

  194. that can get in the way.

  195. Two other things that my heart

  196. wants to default to.

  197. Imagine that I've been wronged.

  198. Does anybody want to suggest a way

  199. that I could have been wronged?

  200. Nobody's, you know,

  201. let's just say it's a car.

  202. Let's just say James,

  203. dear James, dear brother James,

  204. I'll pick on him.

  205. He's leading.

  206. Thank you, James.

  207. Thanks for putting your hand up there.

  208. Let's say he's driven into my car.

  209. Okay, let's say he's driven into my car.

  210. Now, you know, when that happens,

  211. I'm pumped up full of adrenaline

  212. and I might want to respond

  213. firstly by striking back.

  214. I might be very angry

  215. and I might want to go

  216. and put my dear brother in a headlock.

  217. Or maybe I won't respond physically.

  218. I'll respond with words

  219. and I will, you know, shout him.

  220. What are you doing?

  221. What are you looking?

  222. You're looking at your phone.

  223. What are you doing, James?

  224. I might respond quickly

  225. by trying to strike back.

  226. Or in the case of the Corinthian church,

  227. they were suing each other.

  228. James, I'll tell you what,

  229. I'm going straight to your insurance.

  230. You are paying for every,

  231. Dom, you're seeing my car fixed.

  232. Or I might hold a grudge.

  233. I might say to James' face,

  234. don't worry, brother, it's fine.

  235. I forgive you.

  236. But I might actually hold onto a grudge.

  237. Because what a grudge does,

  238. it gives me power over someone else.

  239. You owe me for hurting me,

  240. for damaging my car.

  241. And I'm going to bring this up

  242. every now and then.

  243. Oh, James, you know,

  244. you remember that time

  245. you smashed into my car?

  246. It's okay, I forgive you.

  247. But you know what,

  248. I'd love a coffee right now.

  249. And I'm going to remind other people,

  250. Ash, you remember that time James

  251. smashed into my car, you know?

  252. And I could use that as a tool

  253. to belittle you.

  254. Maybe I'll actually just hold onto this grudge

  255. for many years,

  256. and then one day I'll just cut you off

  257. and have nothing to do with you.

  258. Neither of these options

  259. are influenced by the resurrection of Jesus.

  260. They're influenced by selfishness and pride.

  261. They're the things that my heart quickly responds to.

  262. I'm sure that your heart does the same.

  263. Years of responding in conflict in our relationships

  264. can leave us with destroyed families,

  265. split churches,

  266. damaged marriages,

  267. and hurt friendships.

  268. And so the resurrection calls us to forgive.

  269. And this is really hard.

  270. It actually means that we need to bear the cost.

  271. Instead of recouping the cost,

  272. I actually need to bear this cost.

  273. And that's what God has done with our sin.

  274. He has borne the cost in Jesus' death.

  275. Now this might sound good in principle.

  276. It might sound fine.

  277. But it can be very difficult.

  278. It's very difficult.

  279. Because do you know what?

  280. I like to hold onto a grudge.

  281. Because I gain something out of that.

  282. I've been wronged.

  283. And if I need to let go of that,

  284. it feels like I'm letting part of me die.

  285. And it is.

  286. But the beauty of the gospel

  287. is that when we let our anger

  288. and our grudges die,

  289. we see life.

  290. We see the resurrection life in us,

  291. the Holy Spirit working in us

  292. so that we can forgive

  293. and we can show God's love

  294. and life to other people.

  295. So to have hope for relationships,

  296. even before we get to

  297. more difficult relationships

  298. like ones across ethnicities and classes,

  299. we need to be people

  300. who practice forgiveness.

  301. forgiveness.

  302. So to have hope

  303. for relationships,

  304. our forgiveness has to come

  305. from the resurrection.

  306. We come now to a more complicated issue,

  307. one of race and ethnicity.

  308. Please turn with me to Galatians chapter 2

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  309. as we see the resurrection hope for racism.

  310. In Galatians chapter 2, verse 11,

    Galatians 2:11

  311. when Cephas came to Antioch,

  312. Paul said that he,

  313. I opposed him to his face

  314. because he stood condemned.

  315. For before certain men came from James,

  316. he used to eat with Gentiles.

  317. But when they arrived,

  318. he began to draw back

  319. and separate himself from the Gentiles

  320. because he was afraid

  321. of those who belong to the circumcision group.

  322. So Paul corrects Peter,

  323. Paul rebukes Peter

  324. because he has separated himself

  325. from the Gentiles.

  326. Verse 15,

  327. we who are Jews by birth

  328. and not sinful Gentiles

  329. know that a person

  330. is not justified

  331. by the works of the law

  332. but by faith in Jesus Christ.

  333. So we too

  334. have put our faith in Jesus

  335. that we may be justified

  336. by faith in Christ

  337. and not by works of the law

  338. because by the works of the law

  339. no one will be justified.

  340. Paul had to go and remind Peter

  341. of where salvation came from.

  342. It did not come from the law

  343. but it came from God's grace.

  344. And what Paul does

  345. is something really interesting here.

  346. He connects God's love

  347. and his grace

  348. and his justification

  349. to cultural identity.

  350. And he actually says that

  351. one is stronger than the other.

  352. The identity that we have

  353. as Christians

  354. is far stronger

  355. than our family heritage,

  356. our cultural identity.

  357. Now Paul himself

  358. was a proud Hebrew.

  359. He continues to refer

  360. to himself as a Hebrew.

  361. He doesn't say

  362. I'm a Christian now

  363. so everything that came before

  364. doesn't matter.

  365. He follows Jesus

  366. and he also says

  367. he's a Hebrew.

  368. He's proud of his heritage.

  369. And Paul is talking to Peter.

  370. Peter is the guy

  371. who had seen a vision

  372. from God

  373. that all people

  374. were considered

  375. to be clean.

  376. This is the guy

  377. who had had a vision

  378. from God

  379. that all people are clean

  380. that there is no division

  381. between Jew and Gentile.

  382. And yet

  383. the racial division

  384. between Jews

  385. and Gentiles

  386. ran deep.

  387. It was full

  388. of mistrust,

  389. disrespect

  390. and suspicion.

  391. His fear of the Jews

  392. separated himself

  393. from others.

  394. It was just

  395. racism in practice.

  396. So Peter

  397. stopped eating food

  398. with the Gentiles

  399. and food

  400. is such a clear sign

  401. of relationship.

  402. It's such a wonderful thing

  403. when we get to eat food together.

  404. I'm looking forward

  405. to eating food

  406. with a whole bunch

  407. of people

  408. coming over to my house today.

  409. But here

  410. Peter's racial identity

  411. became more important

  412. than his spiritual identity.

  413. And in effect

  414. he may have said

  415. one thing

  416. with these words

  417. God's love

  418. is for all people.

  419. God offers forgiveness

  420. to all people

  421. but in practice

  422. he denied

  423. the gospel of grace

  424. because he was just

  425. spending time

  426. with the Jews.

  427. Jesus didn't die

  428. for just one ethnicity.

  429. There is no one group

  430. of people

  431. that are more special.

  432. He was the God

  433. he is the God

  434. of the Israelites

  435. and a specific country

  436. but he is also

  437. the God

  438. of the whole world.

  439. At the end of Galatians

  440. in chapter 6

  441. Paul says

  442. neither circumcision

  443. nor uncircumcision

  444. means anything.

  445. What counts

  446. is the new creation.

  447. Paul says that

  448. because of the resurrection

  449. the ethnic

  450. and cultural

  451. differences

  452. are no longer important.

  453. In the new creation

  454. cultural and ethnic

  455. differences

  456. don't create tension

  457. but they are made pure.

  458. They are just one

  459. aspect of who we are.

  460. And I love

  461. Revelation chapter 7.

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  462. Revelation chapter 7

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  463. has this beautiful picture

  464. of the new creation

  465. where there will be

  466. people from

  467. every tribe

  468. nation

  469. people and language

  470. praising God

  471. together.

  472. Ethnic and cultural

  473. differences

  474. are a good

  475. part of creation

  476. and they are

  477. purified

  478. and they endure

  479. past the resurrection.

  480. In the ancient world

  481. religion was just

  482. one aspect

  483. of a culture's

  484. identity.

  485. If you were from

  486. Athens

  487. you worshipped

  488. the god

  489. Athena

  490. Athena

  491. Athena

  492. thank you

  493. thank you

  494. Narlene.

  495. If you were

  496. a Delphian

  497. your god

  498. was Apollo

  499. if you were

  500. from Olympus

  501. your god

  502. was Zeus

  503. if you were

  504. from Corinth

  505. a city

  506. by the sea

  507. your god

  508. was Poseidon.

  509. Christianity

  510. fundamentally

  511. changed

  512. all of that.

  513. Everyone

  514. of every

  515. city

  516. every

  517. ethnic group

  518. every

  519. nation

  520. all people

  521. were called

  522. to worship

  523. the same

  524. god.

  525. The implication

  526. then is that

  527. this god

  528. relationship

  529. with this god

  530. unites us

  531. far deeper

  532. far stronger

  533. than any

  534. cultural bond

  535. any place

  536. that we've

  537. come from.

  538. And yet

  539. following Jesus

  540. putting off

  541. the old self

  542. and old way

  543. of doing things

  544. doesn't mean

  545. that I can

  546. actually put

  547. off my

  548. cultural

  549. identity.

  550. There is

  551. no way

  552. to be

  553. culturally

  554. neutral.

  555. I will

  556. forever be

  557. someone who

  558. is influenced

  559. by being

  560. an Aussie

  561. male

  562. growing up

  563. in Wollongong

  564. in the

  565. 1990s.

  566. I'm a

  567. 90s child

  568. that's just

  569. that's who

  570. I am

  571. and I can't

  572. actually change

  573. that.

  574. It's impossible

  575. to change

  576. that.

  577. But what

  578. I can seek

  579. to do

  580. is to have

  581. my cultural

  582. way of

  583. doing things

  584. changed

  585. and made

  586. pure.

  587. No longer

  588. can I blame

  589. culture.

  590. No longer

  591. can I just

  592. say that's

  593. just what

  594. people from

  595. Sydney do.

  596. That's just

  597. what Aussies

  598. do.

  599. I can actually

  600. choose to

  601. stand apart

  602. to put off

  603. idolatrous

  604. ways and

  605. be a

  606. Christian

  607. with a

  608. culture

  609. shaped by

  610. God.

  611. What if

  612. I as

  613. a white

  614. 36 year

  615. old male

  616. was listening

  617. to a

  618. younger

  619. Asian

  620. Christian

  621. sister

  622. speak of

  623. the

  624. casual

  625. and

  626. deliberate

  627. racism

  628. she's

  629. received

  630. just

  631. because

  632. of

  633. her

  634. ethnicity?

  635. How would

  636. I respond

  637. to that?

  638. I think

  639. my instinct

  640. would be

  641. to defend

  642. my culture

  643. to defend

  644. the way

  645. I grew

  646. up and

  647. the people

  648. I grew

  649. up with.

  650. I probably

  651. want to

  652. default to

  653. saying something

  654. like oh

  655. look it's

  656. not real

  657. racism

  658. it's just

  659. jokes.

  660. That's just

  661. what Aussies

  662. do.

  663. They're just

  664. boys being

  665. boys it's

  666. one of

  667. those type

  668. of excuses

  669. and just

  670. dismiss her

  671. concerns.

  672. Maybe I'd

  673. even push

  674. it back to

  675. victim blaming

  676. oh look you're

  677. actually not

  678. able to

  679. take a

  680. joke.

  681. It's

  682. actually

  683. your fault.

  684. I might

  685. even say

  686. look racism

  687. now isn't

  688. as bad

  689. as it

  690. was 20

  691. 30 years

  692. ago when

  693. I was

  694. growing up.

  695. It's so

  696. much better

  697. now so

  698. don't worry

  699. about it.

  700. or I

  701. can remember

  702. that my

  703. old self

  704. because of

  705. my pride

  706. in ethnicity

  707. is an

  708. idol and

  709. what it

  710. does is

  711. it actually

  712. blinds me

  713. to actual

  714. racism and

  715. I need to

  716. remember that

  717. I'm a

  718. Christian first

  719. and a

  720. white male

  721. second and

  722. I must

  723. treat this

  724. sister as

  725. an equal

  726. child of

  727. God and

  728. who God

  729. is using

  730. to speak

  731. to me in

  732. that moment

  733. to work

  734. on my

  735. idolatry.

  736. Each of

  737. us needs

  738. to be

  739. aware of

  740. our own

  741. cultural

  742. blindness

  743. and not

  744. believe that

  745. our way

  746. of being

  747. a Christian

  748. just because

  749. it's the

  750. way we've

  751. grown up

  752. is necessarily

  753. the right

  754. way.

  755. Now what

  756. I would

  757. love to

  758. do at

  759. this point

  760. is I

  761. would love

  762. to encourage

  763. you to

  764. go on a

  765. holiday to

  766. another

  767. country.

  768. A little

  769. bit difficult

  770. I don't

  771. have money

  772. to give

  773. you to

  774. fly

  775. anywhere

  776. we might

  777. be able

  778. to go to

  779. New Zealand

  780. in a week.

  781. What I'd

  782. love for you

  783. to do is

  784. to go to

  785. another

  786. culture

  787. spend a

  788. significant

  789. amount of

  790. time there

  791. because what

  792. that does

  793. is it

  794. actually makes

  795. you realise

  796. these Christians

  797. do things

  798. differently to

  799. those Christians

  800. back home.

  801. I wonder

  802. why.

  803. When we

  804. get out of

  805. our own

  806. culture it

  807. helps us

  808. to ask

  809. questions

  810. of our

  811. own way

  812. of doing

  813. things.

  814. We are

  815. a multi-ethnic

  816. church here

  817. and we are

  818. seeking to

  819. have a

  820. culture shaped

  821. not by

  822. racism

  823. not by

  824. ethnic

  825. preference

  826. not by

  827. the culture

  828. that I've

  829. grown up

  830. in

  831. but shaped

  832. by Jesus

  833. and his

  834. resurrection.

  835. We can be

  836. a voice

  837. of love

  838. to hurt

  839. and broken

  840. people in

  841. our

  842. polarised

  843. neighbourhood

  844. as we

  845. hold out

  846. God's

  847. love.

  848. Let me

  849. encourage you

  850. call out

  851. racism

  852. when you

  853. see it.

  854. Call out

  855. racism

  856. in the

  857. workplace

  858. even if

  859. it means

  860. you don't

  861. get the

  862. next

  863. promotion.

  864. Call out

  865. racism

  866. within

  867. friendship

  868. groups

  869. even if

  870. it means

  871. you lose

  872. friends.

  873. Don't keep

  874. quiet in

  875. fear like

  876. Peter.

  877. Show active

  878. love to

  879. people of

  880. all nations

  881. and I

  882. think most

  883. importantly

  884. we actually

  885. need to

  886. seek to

  887. listen to

  888. people who

  889. are different

  890. to us.

  891. In the next

  892. couple of

  893. weeks I'm

  894. hoping to

  895. read a

  896. book called

  897. Reading

  898. While

  899. Black.

  900. It's

  901. written by

  902. an African

  903. American

  904. called

  905. Esau

  906. Macaulay

  907. and he

  908. writes

  909. about

  910. what it

  911. means to

  912. be a

  913. Christian

  914. growing up

  915. in the

  916. South

  917. of America

  918. and I'm

  919. looking forward

  920. to reading

  921. that because

  922. it is such

  923. a different

  924. cultural

  925. perspective

  926. on what it

  927. means to

  928. be a

  929. Christian

  930. and he

  931. has a

  932. whole

  933. different

  934. voice on

  935. what it

  936. means to

  937. be an

  938. African

  939. and insight

  940. into the

  941. Africans in

  942. the Bible

  943. so I'm

  944. really looking

  945. forward to

  946. that.

  947. Let me

  948. encourage you

  949. seek out

  950. different

  951. voices to

  952. understand

  953. people from

  954. different

  955. places.

  956. I think

  957. SBS is a

  958. wonderful

  959. channel because

  960. it is so

  961. multi-ethnic.

  962. Watch documentaries,

  963. learn about

  964. people from

  965. other places.

  966. So let me

  967. encourage you,

  968. as we seek to

  969. be influenced by

  970. the resurrection,

  971. to love people

  972. who are different,

  973. let me encourage

  974. you to listen.

  975. Listen to

  976. people's stories.

  977. We've looked at

  978. relationships between

  979. each other,

  980. how we need to

  981. forgive,

  982. across ethnicities,

  983. how important

  984. it is to

  985. listen,

  986. and now we

  987. come to the

  988. resurrection hope

  989. we have for

  990. the classes,

  991. for different

  992. social groups.

  993. Have a look

  994. with me at

  995. Luke chapter

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  996. 14.

  997. Jesus is at

  998. a banquet.

  999. I actually

  1000. wonder if this

  1001. is the first

  1002. type of banquet

  1003. like this Jesus

  1004. has gone to.

  1005. Growing up as a

  1006. tradie, I

  1007. wonder if this

  1008. is the first

  1009. time he's gone

  1010. to a meal like

  1011. this.

  1012. In chapter 14

  1013. it says,

  1014. when he noticed

  1015. how the guests

  1016. picked the places

  1017. of honour at

  1018. the table,

  1019. he told them

  1020. this parable.

  1021. When someone

  1022. invites you to

  1023. a wedding feast,

  1024. do not take

  1025. the place of

  1026. honour,

  1027. for a person

  1028. more distinguished

  1029. than you may

  1030. have been

  1031. invited.

  1032. Jesus is at

  1033. this banquet

  1034. and he is

  1035. watching the

  1036. social interactions

  1037. around him.

  1038. He's watching

  1039. how the class

  1040. based system

  1041. functions.

  1042. Those who

  1043. were closer to

  1044. the top of

  1045. the table,

  1046. they were

  1047. considered to

  1048. be more

  1049. important.

  1050. They sat

  1051. with the

  1052. more important

  1053. people and

  1054. they would

  1055. have conversations

  1056. to advance

  1057. themselves.

  1058. It was a

  1059. form of

  1060. ancient networking

  1061. before LinkedIn

  1062. or however

  1063. people do it

  1064. these days.

  1065. The purpose

  1066. of this

  1067. dinner was

  1068. to grow

  1069. social relationships

  1070. so that you

  1071. could climb

  1072. the ladder.

  1073. You know,

  1074. you wanted to

  1075. sit next to

  1076. a person who

  1077. could help

  1078. you to open

  1079. doors, to

  1080. invest in you

  1081. and you would

  1082. invest in them

  1083. and you

  1084. would buy

  1085. products.

  1086. So, you

  1087. know, you'd

  1088. sit next to

  1089. the property

  1090. developer and

  1091. you'd ask,

  1092. you know,

  1093. where's the

  1094. next land sale

  1095. going to be?

  1096. Where's the

  1097. next boom

  1098. suburb?

  1099. You tell me

  1100. where that is

  1101. and I'll buy

  1102. in there and

  1103. you'll get

  1104. more money.

  1105. And then if

  1106. you need me,

  1107. you do a

  1108. favour for

  1109. you, I'll

  1110. do that.

  1111. You know,

  1112. I'm going to

  1113. sit next to

  1114. the person who

  1115. works for the

  1116. government so I

  1117. can get my

  1118. DA through

  1119. quicker and

  1120. when it does

  1121. that I will

  1122. give your

  1123. political party

  1124. an extra kickback.

  1125. You scratch my

  1126. back, I scratch

  1127. your back.

  1128. Jesus says

  1129. into this

  1130. context,

  1131. don't try and

  1132. take the places

  1133. of honour and

  1134. power for

  1135. yourselves.

  1136. But that's a

  1137. crazy thought

  1138. into this

  1139. context.

  1140. That was the

  1141. whole point of

  1142. going to this

  1143. event.

  1144. You wanted the

  1145. place of honour

  1146. because you

  1147. want to talk to

  1148. those people

  1149. around you so

  1150. that you can

  1151. climb so you

  1152. can get ahead.

  1153. I didn't come

  1154. to this feast

  1155. to talk to

  1156. poor people.

  1157. They are not

  1158. going to help

  1159. me at all.

  1160. I came to

  1161. get an

  1162. advantage.

  1163. The whole

  1164. social system

  1165. was designed

  1166. to meet

  1167. people to

  1168. do favours

  1169. for each

  1170. other, to

  1171. try and get

  1172. control and

  1173. power and

  1174. influence and

  1175. money.

  1176. Jesus says

  1177. something radical.

  1178. Instead of

  1179. focusing on

  1180. yourself,

  1181. focus on

  1182. others.

  1183. You don't

  1184. need to gain

  1185. power and

  1186. control and

  1187. money because

  1188. you have a

  1189. God who

  1190. richly blesses

  1191. you and he

  1192. is in control

  1193. of all things.

  1194. And so Jesus

  1195. breaks free of

  1196. this system in

  1197. verse 12.

  1198. Jesus said to

  1199. his host,

  1200. when you give

  1201. a luncheon or

  1202. dinner, do not

  1203. invite your

  1204. friends, your

  1205. brothers or your

  1206. sisters, your

  1207. relatives or your

  1208. rich neighbours.

  1209. If you do, they

  1210. may invite you

  1211. back and so you

  1212. will be repaid.

  1213. But when you

  1214. give a banquet,

  1215. invite the

  1216. poor, the

  1217. crippled, the

  1218. lame, the

  1219. blind and you

  1220. will be blessed.

  1221. Although they

  1222. cannot repay you,

  1223. you will be

  1224. repaid at the

  1225. resurrection of

  1226. the righteous.

  1227. So the

  1228. resurrection

  1229. influences how

  1230. we view people

  1231. in different

  1232. social situations.

  1233. Now what Jesus

  1234. is talking to,

  1235. he's talking to a

  1236. culture of

  1237. reciprocity.

  1238. A culture where

  1239. if I do

  1240. something for you,

  1241. you have to

  1242. reciprocate.

  1243. You do

  1244. something for

  1245. me.

  1246. It's true of

  1247. other cultures

  1248. today, some

  1249. Asian cultures

  1250. are still very

  1251. reciprocal.

  1252. Gifts were

  1253. never free.

  1254. There was

  1255. always strings

  1256. attached.

  1257. And so you

  1258. would never

  1259. invite a poor

  1260. person to a

  1261. feast.

  1262. First of all,

  1263. it says something

  1264. about the

  1265. host.

  1266. Other people

  1267. would feel that

  1268. their time was

  1269. wasted.

  1270. Why is this

  1271. poor person

  1272. here?

  1273. I get nothing

  1274. out of them.

  1275. I'm not going

  1276. to talk to

  1277. them.

  1278. And then the

  1279. poor person

  1280. themselves would

  1281. be embarrassed

  1282. because they

  1283. can't offer

  1284. anything else

  1285. back to the

  1286. host.

  1287. They can't

  1288. invite the

  1289. host back

  1290. next week

  1291. for a feast

  1292. because they

  1293. can't do

  1294. that.

  1295. And so the

  1296. poor would

  1297. just be

  1298. excluded for

  1299. their sake and

  1300. for everybody

  1301. else's sake.

  1302. And so what

  1303. would happen is

  1304. the poor would

  1305. get poorer and

  1306. the rich would

  1307. get richer.

  1308. Jesus is

  1309. critical of this

  1310. system.

  1311. And so he

  1312. says, you

  1313. know what,

  1314. let's just

  1315. start a new

  1316. one.

  1317. Let's start

  1318. a new

  1319. system, not

  1320. based on

  1321. giving each

  1322. other gifts,

  1323. one based on

  1324. the resurrection

  1325. where God

  1326. values us

  1327. all equally

  1328. and has given

  1329. us the gift

  1330. of his son.

  1331. All richly

  1332. blessed.

  1333. Instead of

  1334. seeking people

  1335. to actively

  1336. gain a benefit

  1337. from them,

  1338. I'm going to

  1339. use this person

  1340. to get ahead.

  1341. I'm going to

  1342. befriend them

  1343. to open doors.

  1344. No, choosing

  1345. to love other

  1346. people just

  1347. to love them.

  1348. The resurrection,

  1349. salvation itself

  1350. is our

  1351. advantage and

  1352. not what we

  1353. gain from

  1354. each other.

  1355. Christians are

  1356. called to be in

  1357. relationships with

  1358. people from

  1359. other social

  1360. circles and

  1361. cultures as an

  1362. expression of

  1363. God's love,

  1364. of God's

  1365. generosity to

  1366. us.

  1367. It's a whole

  1368. new world view

  1369. of how people

  1370. are viewed not

  1371. as tools to

  1372. get ahead,

  1373. but as people

  1374. loved by God

  1375. to be loved.

  1376. Jesus has

  1377. blessed us,

  1378. he's brought

  1379. us out of

  1380. poverty and

  1381. given us life,

  1382. so we're

  1383. called to

  1384. imitate him

  1385. in generosity.

  1386. Belief in

  1387. the resurrection

  1388. should change

  1389. our relationships.

  1390. It should

  1391. change how we

  1392. calculate the

  1393. value of

  1394. people.

  1395. It should

  1396. end the

  1397. constant thoughts

  1398. in the back

  1399. of my mind,

  1400. I'll pick on

  1401. James again,

  1402. is this person

  1403. actually worth

  1404. my time?

  1405. Should I

  1406. spend time

  1407. with him?

  1408. Is he just

  1409. going to drag

  1410. me down?

  1411. He's going to

  1412. need a lot of

  1413. work.

  1414. Do I really

  1415. have time?

  1416. Is he actually

  1417. worth it?

  1418. And if I spend

  1419. time with him,

  1420. does he appreciate

  1421. it enough?

  1422. Does he thank

  1423. me enough?

  1424. What do I

  1425. actually get out

  1426. of this

  1427. relationship?

  1428. The resurrection

  1429. should actually

  1430. end our

  1431. stinginess with

  1432. our time and

  1433. our wealth and

  1434. our lives,

  1435. because the

  1436. resurrection calls

  1437. us to

  1438. generosity?

  1439. Today we've

  1440. spoken about

  1441. big social

  1442. change,

  1443. of

  1444. relationships,

  1445. of racism,

  1446. of resources,

  1447. and I want to

  1448. encourage you,

  1449. instead of

  1450. just seeing

  1451. the national

  1452. and international

  1453. conversations and

  1454. thinking, oh,

  1455. I need to engage

  1456. with that,

  1457. I need to talk

  1458. about these big

  1459. things,

  1460. just to engage

  1461. with the most

  1462. recent Black

  1463. Lives Matter

  1464. march or

  1465. these kinds of

  1466. things,

  1467. instead of just

  1468. engaging with

  1469. those things,

  1470. start with the

  1471. people around

  1472. you.

  1473. It is much

  1474. easier to

  1475. forgive, to

  1476. show generosity,

  1477. and to listen to

  1478. the people that

  1479. are in front of

  1480. you.

  1481. So look out for

  1482. opportunities of

  1483. social inequality

  1484. people around

  1485. you.

  1486. My community

  1487. group, we

  1488. got together a

  1489. whole heap of

  1490. food for the

  1491. asylum seeker

  1492. center in the

  1493. city to serve

  1494. people who are

  1495. in need.

  1496. Look out for

  1497. opportunities in

  1498. your community

  1499. around you to

  1500. show the influence

  1501. of the resurrection

  1502. and not just

  1503. see the big

  1504. national debates

  1505. and think it

  1506. is too hard.

  1507. The resurrection

  1508. calls us to

  1509. forgive each

  1510. other and to

  1511. see relationships

  1512. restored.

  1513. The resurrection

  1514. calls us to

  1515. listen so that

  1516. we see the

  1517. gospel that

  1518. binds us

  1519. together and

  1520. not cultural

  1521. differences.

  1522. The resurrection

  1523. calls us to be

  1524. generous because

  1525. we have a

  1526. generous God.

  1527. And so let's

  1528. be a church,

  1529. let's be a

  1530. people that do

  1531. these things,

  1532. that forgive,

  1533. that listen and

  1534. are generous.

  1535. Let me pray.

  1536. Dear Heavenly

  1537. Father, Lord I

  1538. thank you for

  1539. all of your

  1540. goodness to us.

  1541. Lord it is

  1542. easy for us to

  1543. forget how much

  1544. we have been

  1545. forgiven, how

  1546. generous you

  1547. have been and

  1548. how you

  1549. know our

  1550. condition because

  1551. Jesus became

  1552. one of us.

  1553. Heavenly Father

  1554. we ask that you

  1555. would remind us

  1556. of the impact

  1557. of the resurrection

  1558. on our daily

  1559. lives.

  1560. Lord give us

  1561. much patience

  1562. when we are

  1563. faced with

  1564. conflict that

  1565. we would be

  1566. quick to

  1567. forgive.

  1568. That when we

  1569. see cultural

  1570. differences we

  1571. would not be

  1572. quick to see the

  1573. differences between

  1574. us and others

  1575. but be quick to

  1576. see the gospel

  1577. that binds

  1578. us.

  1579. And Father

  1580. help us to be

  1581. generous to other

  1582. people Lord

  1583. knowing your love

  1584. for us.

  1585. We ask this in

  1586. your son's name.

  1587. Amen.

  1588. Amen.

  1589. Amen.
