  1. I can't do it. I'm not the right person. I don't have the skills. Get someone else to do it.

  2. All of these thoughts ran through my head as Alyssa and I stood on the doorstep of Westmead

  3. Hospital when our son Isaac had been born and we were about to leave the hospital.

  4. How could we be responsible for this person? Did the people in the hospital realise that we had

  5. no idea what we were doing? Now we've figured out most parts of what it means to parent,

  6. at least parent small children, and we still have many left to learn. But in that moment,

  7. Alyssa and I had a moment where we were filled with, plagued with doubts and fears. We can fear

  8. failing because we're ill-equipped. We don't have the right knowledge. We can fear failing because

  9. we think we're just the wrong person for the task. Maybe I don't want to fail, so I'll just say I'm not

  10. the right person. Alyssa, I'm not the right person to change a nappy. I don't know how to do that.

  11. Unfortunately, she didn't let me get out of the one and I had to learn how to do that.

  12. But when somebody else asks for help, when somebody calls for help outside of our comfort zone,

  13. we can respond, I can't do that. I don't know how. I'm not the right person. And I wonder if we can do

  14. the same thing with God. God calls us to follow Jesus. He calls us into his family and he also

  15. calls us out. He sends us out to love and serve other people. But I wonder if we can hear that call

  16. of God and say, no. No, no, God, I'm not the right person to go out. I'm not equipped to share my faith.

  17. I can't help that person over there. God, send someone else. My friend needs help. They're grieving,

  18. but somebody else can comfort them with the gospel. That person over there, they're asking for help.

  19. God, can you send someone else to fix this problem? And the reality is, we are all faced with situations

  20. like this. Moses was in a similar position, which Nolene has just read for us. Last week,

  21. we started our series in the book of Exodus. And this book shows us that we are very ordinary,

  22. but we have an extraordinary God. And Moses, he'd fled out of Egypt out of fear of Pharaoh.

  23. And he's fleeing his own people as well. And he's living in a place called Midian. He's been there

  24. for around 40 years. He's gotten married, but he's still plagued by his past failure. He's lonely

  25. and lost. So much so that he names his son Gershon. Gershon means foreigner. This is how Moses is feeling.

  26. He's in a distant land. He's feeling like a foreigner. And into this context, God is going to call him.

  27. God's going to give him a new identity, not one based on being a prince in Egypt.

  28. But Moses, he's still plagued by his fear to follow God's call. And so as we have a look at chapters 3 and 4

  29. today, we're going to see how God calls ordinary people to do extraordinary things. And how he calls

  30. and prepares and sends us out. So please, let's pray as we jump in. Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, I thank you

  31. that you, as I thank you every week, that you are a good and kind and loving God. God, help us to hear

  32. this morning about your love for us and about how you want to use us, Lord, because you are extraordinary.

  33. Amen. So today, we have three points. First of all, we're going to see an encounter with God.

  34. Then we're going to see Moses called out by God. And then what it actually means to follow God's call.

  35. An encounter with God, called out by God. And then what it actually means to follow, to follow that

  36. call of God. So Moses is tending a flock of sheep on a mountain called Horeb. Its other name is Sinai.

  37. And God appears in a burning bush. Now fire is something that we are all just instinctively

  38. drawn to. I don't know, there's just something marvelous about fire. Have you ever been camping

  39. and you just want to sit around that fire, even though it's going to make you stink with smoke?

  40. We're just instinctively drawn to fire. But also, we don't go and sit in the fire. We keep our

  41. distance from fire. It is attractive, but it's also dangerous. It gets Moses' attention.

  42. And perhaps God is using a fire itself to draw Moses to him, but also remind him that there is

  43. difference between God and man. Now Moses goes over thinking that this is a strange sight. This bush,

  44. it should have been burnt up by an hour. But that's not the only strange thing about this bush.

  45. The bush starts speaking. God calls to Moses through this bush. And God reveals who he is.

  46. Have a look, Exodus chapter 3, verse 5.

    Exodus 3:5

  47. Do not come any closer, God said. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.

  48. Then he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

  49. At this, Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God. God speaks to Moses. He reveals who he is.

  50. And this God is awesome, but also terrifying to behold. The space around the bush was holy because

  51. God was speaking. And so when Moses hears it, he falls flat on the ground. He hides his face

  52. because he is terrified. And there is a rightness to this response. God is not our mate. He is not our

  53. buddy. He is not our friend. He's not even the type of God who's a vending machine that we put our

  54. prayers into and we get the things that we want out of. If we met this God face to face, we would fall

  55. in our feet just like Moses does. And look at what this God says in verse 7. The Lord said,

  56. God says he knows what has been going on for his people. His people have been enslaved in Egypt,

  57. because there was a Pharaoh who feared them. God had blessed Israel. They had grown large

  58. and they'd been enslaved. And God says, I see your misery. I've heard your crying. I'm concerned

  59. about your suffering. And God has come down to deal with this situation. It is easy for us to take for

  60. granted God being among us when we forget how above us he is. It's easy to take for granted that God would

  61. come down when we forget how far he comes down and how awesome he is. He is so far above us. He is

  62. holy and perfect. Moses couldn't even stand before God speaking through a bush, let alone God himself.

  63. But this God who is different and holy and good and perfect and awesome, he also comes down. He is present.

  64. And the wonderful encouragement for Moses here is, I know your condition. I know the suffering you're going

  65. through. This is a God who does not remain separate. He knows our problems. He rolls up his sleeves and he's

  66. going to get involved. He has appeared to Moses in a bush to say, I'm with you. He's going to appear to

  67. Israel in a pillar of smoke and a pillar of fire to say, I am with you. I know you're suffering.

  68. And he ultimately appears as Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, who we get to encounter

  69. through the words of the Bible to meet. And we get to meet this God face to face.

  70. And so God says he will do something. This God is going to get involved. He's going to deal with

  71. this situation. Verse 10, so now go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites,

  72. out of Egypt. God is going to deal with this situation. He's encountered Moses so that Moses

  73. can be the one that God uses to deal with this situation.

  74. God is going to use Moses to bring them out of slavery. And I can imagine at this moment,

  75. Moses thinking, do you know what, God? I've tried that. I've tried to save Israel in the past.

  76. And look where it's gotten me. I'm in exile now in Midian. I've been here for about 40 years.

  77. What Moses had done was he saw an Israelite being abused and beaten by an Egyptian.

  78. And so Moses got involved and he killed the Egyptian.

  79. And so Moses looks at the situation and goes, I've tried to save Israel before.

  80. It didn't do so well. And so Moses has five different excuses for God.

  81. This is our second point today, God's call to Moses. But Moses has five different excuses.

  82. He says he's unfit. He says he lacks knowledge. He's not going to be effective. He can't speak.

  83. And do you know what? He just does not want to do it. Five different excuses of Moses.

  84. We didn't read all of these out. We're going to have a look at these now.

  85. But God answers these and his promises are wonderful.

  86. And so we're going to go through Moses' responses here.

  87. But I wonder, as we do this, have a think.

  88. Which of these responses would I give to God?

  89. If God spoke to me right now through a burning bush or spoke to me over coffee through someone at church

  90. and said, hey, can you go and do this?

  91. Can you go and love this person?

  92. Can you go and speak the gospel to this person into their life?

  93. Which of these five excuses do we default to?

  94. How do we answer God's call?

  95. Do we say, I'm not the right person?

  96. I lack knowledge.

  97. You know, I don't have the words.

  98. Do you know, God, I could do that, but I'm not going to be effective.

  99. Or maybe, God, I just don't want to.

  100. As we go through this, have a think.

  101. Which of these do I default to?

  102. We'll come back to that at the end.

  103. First of all, we're going to see Moses' fear of failure.

  104. As him being unfit.

  105. He just thinks he's unfit for the role.

  106. Verse 11.

  107. Moses said to God,

  108. Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?

  109. Who am I?

  110. Now, the reality is,

  111. Moses is the perfect person for it.

  112. He was raised in the Egyptian court.

  113. He knows the Egyptian situation.

  114. He knows how to deal with them politically because he was raised in that situation.

  115. He's also an Israelite so he can speak for them.

  116. There is no one like Moses for this situation.

  117. And yet he says,

  118. Who am I, God?

  119. Who am I?

  120. He feels inadequate for the task.

  121. He's already tried to save Israel once before.

  122. He's had to flee Egypt.

  123. And he's saying,

  124. God, you've got the wrong person.

  125. And God responds,

  126. I love God's answers here.

  127. God's answers are just truly wonderful.

  128. And what he does,

  129. he actually doesn't answer the question,

  130. but also gives the best answer to the question.

  131. Moses asks,

  132. Who am I?

  133. And God says in verse 12,

  134. I will be with you.

  135. Your identity is a former child of the Egyptian royal family.

  136. That's actually not important.

  137. Your identity as a lost son of Israel.

  138. That's not important.

  139. What is important is my identity.

  140. I am God.

  141. And I am with you.

  142. Despite God's promise that he'll be with him,

  143. Moses is not convinced.

  144. He comes back to God with his second fear.

  145. Verse 13,

  146. effectively asks,

  147. Well, who are you?

  148. Verse 13,

  149. Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them,

  150. The God of your fathers has sent me to you.

  151. And they ask me,

  152. What is his name?

  153. Then what do I tell them?

  154. Moses' first question was about his own fear of his identity.

  155. Who am I to do this?

  156. Now, in questioning God,

  157. he says,

  158. Well, who are you, God?

  159. Who am I to explain who you are?

  160. I don't have knowledge of who you are

  161. to explain that to the Israelite leaders.

  162. And God's response is one of the most studied parts of the Old Testament.

  163. God answers with his name.

  164. What is known as Yahweh.

  165. Verse 14,

  166. God said to Moses,

  167. I am who I am.

  168. That's the word Yahweh.

  169. This is what you are to say to the Israelites.

  170. I am has sent me to you.

  171. Now, this is a name that is meant to burst our definitions.

  172. When we meet people and introduce ourselves,

  173. we define ourselves by other things.

  174. So, you know,

  175. when I met, you know,

  176. Nick,

  177. it's,

  178. Hi, Nick.

  179. I'm James.

  180. I'm a father.

  181. I'm a husband.

  182. I'm a teacher,

  183. an accountant.

  184. We communicate who we are

  185. by the things around us.

  186. We give ourselves titles

  187. to help other people understand us.

  188. We define ourselves

  189. by other things.

  190. But God does not do that.

  191. His argument actually circles back on itself.

  192. I am who I am.

  193. God is not defined by anything else.

  194. He doesn't need to say,

  195. you know,

  196. for me,

  197. I am Alyssa's husband.

  198. I explain who I am

  199. by reference to somebody else.

  200. God doesn't do that.

  201. He says,

  202. I am who I am.

  203. God,

  204. he's not constrained by external factors.

  205. He doesn't depend upon other people.

  206. And that means that when he makes promises,

  207. he can keep them.

  208. I am who I am

  209. can also be translated as,

  210. I will be who I will be.

  211. And so,

  212. in four out of five of Moses' questions and objections,

  213. God actually answers,

  214. I will be with you.

  215. The God of the universe is with you.

  216. But this God of the universe

  217. has also made himself known

  218. to a specific group of people.

  219. Verse 15,

  220. Say to the Israelites,

  221. the God of your fathers,

  222. the God of Abraham,

  223. the God of Isaac,

  224. and the God of Jacob

  225. has sent me to you.

  226. This God,

  227. who's not defined by other people,

  228. has come to know and love

  229. a particular people.

  230. This is not a new God.

  231. This is the God of Israel.

  232. Moses had questioned who he was,

  233. and then he had questioned who God is,

  234. and now Moses asks,

  235. well,

  236. how are you going to be with me?

  237. God has,

  238. and God sets out this wonderful plan.

  239. You're going to go and speak to the elders.

  240. They will listen.

  241. Pharaoh,

  242. his heart will be hardened.

  243. He won't want to let you out of Egypt,

  244. but I will work miracles through you,

  245. and you will go,

  246. and you will plunder Egypt.

  247. You will have obstacles,

  248. but no matter how big they are,

  249. you will get through them,

  250. not because of you,

  251. but because of me,

  252. because I am is with you.

  253. Moses has heard God's wonderful plan.

  254. He has heard about who this God is.

  255. He's heard these assurances from God,

  256. but he still isn't willing to give up.

  257. He fears that he won't be effective.

  258. He has his third fear here,

  259. in chapter 4, verse 1.

  260. What if they don't believe me,

  261. or listen to me,

  262. and say,

  263. the Lord did not appear to you?

  264. Moses still has a lot of issues

  265. trusting in God,

  266. and trusting in other people.

  267. But more seriously,

  268. he's just disagreed with God himself.

  269. God has said,

  270. this is the plan,

  271. this is what's going to happen,

  272. and this is how it's going to work out.

  273. And Moses stands back and goes,

  274. I just want to,

  275. God,

  276. I just want to clarify point 2.

  277. I don't think that one's going to work.

  278. Can you imagine Moses' audacity here

  279. to do that to God?

  280. It appears that verbal assurances

  281. are just not good enough.

  282. And so God gives him an immediate sign.

  283. God says,

  284. Moses,

  285. throw down your staff that you've got.

  286. Moses throws it down,

  287. and it turns into a snake.

  288. And Moses runs away

  289. out of fear of a snake.

  290. God says,

  291. go and pick the snake up by the tail,

  292. and he picks it up by the tail,

  293. and it turns back into a staff.

  294. God calls him to overcome his fear.

  295. And this shows that God is more powerful

  296. than Moses' fear,

  297. but it also validates his authority.

  298. You are sent by God,

  299. you have my authority.

  300. God tells Moses to put his hand into his cloak,

  301. and it comes out covered in leprosy.

  302. It goes back in,

  303. and comes out clean,

  304. because this God is in control

  305. of life and death and disease.

  306. God promises Moses,

  307. Moses,

  308. take water out of the Nile

  309. and pour it out,

  310. and it will turn into blood

  311. because this God is in control

  312. of the Nile,

  313. which gave life to the people of Egypt.

  314. These three signs

  315. were to give confidence to Moses

  316. that God is in control,

  317. and that God was with him.

  318. His name himself,

  319. I am,

  320. is with you.

  321. But somehow,

  322. Moses has a fourth excuse.

  323. If you're not getting frustrated

  324. with Moses at this point,

  325. you are far more patient than I am.

  326. I'm getting quite frustrated

  327. with Moses here.

  328. His fear comes up.

  329. His fear is that he just,

  330. I don't have the right gifting.

  331. I can't do this

  332. because I don't have the right gifting.

  333. Chapter 4, verse 10.

  334. Moses said to the Lord,

  335. pardon your servant, Lord.

  336. I have never been eloquent,

  337. neither in the past

  338. nor since you have spoken

  339. to your servant.

  340. I am slow of speech and tongue.

  341. I don't have the gifting of words.

  342. So somehow he has the ability

  343. to speak to a burning bush,

  344. and that's been fine,

  345. but he can't go and speak to Pharaoh.

  346. He's seen a staff turn into a snake

  347. and pick that up.

  348. He's turned his hand leprous and back,

  349. and yet he says,

  350. God,

  351. I don't have the gift to do this.

  352. And God reminds him

  353. that God is the one

  354. who made mouths

  355. and speech.

  356. Verse 12,

  357. now go,

  358. I will help you speak.

  359. I will teach you what to say.

  360. Again,

  361. God is promising

  362. based on who he is,

  363. I am with you.

  364. Moses' fifth

  365. and last excuse.

  366. Verse 13,

  367. send someone else.

  368. He's just unwilling.

  369. I just don't want to do this, God.

  370. God appears to have a tone of irritation,

  371. if not rebuke,

  372. in verse 14.

  373. Then the Lord's anger

  374. burned against Moses,

  375. and he said,

  376. what about your brother,

  377. Aaron the Levite?

  378. Verse 15,

  379. you shall speak to him

  380. and put words in his mouth.

  381. I will help both of you speak

  382. and will teach you what to do.

  383. God is going to use Moses to speak.

  384. Moses is going to be the one who speaks,

  385. but Moses is going to speak to Aaron

  386. and then Aaron will speak.

  387. And God's anger here,

  388. it's tinged with mercy.

  389. He doesn't get rid of him.

  390. He doesn't use someone else,

  391. but he appoints a spokesperson for Moses.

  392. Moses could not shrink away from God any longer.

  393. Someone else was going to do the talking,

  394. but Moses was going to be the one

  395. leading Israel out of Egypt.

  396. God has defeated every single one

  397. of Moses' excuses.

  398. Moses has been plagued by fear,

  399. and that's influenced his desire

  400. not to return to Egypt.

  401. And really,

  402. this example of Moses

  403. just highlights

  404. how unimpressive people are

  405. and how God chooses to use them anyway.

  406. It's really wonderful here

  407. because God doesn't encourage Moses

  408. with nice words or platitudes.

  409. God doesn't say to Moses,

  410. everything will be fine.

  411. You can do this.

  412. Moses, actually,

  413. you're a great speaker.

  414. You've just got to start doing it.

  415. You're going to be great.

  416. You're going to go there,

  417. and you're actually going to be really convincing.

  418. Pharaoh's going to hear you,

  419. and it's going to be awesome.

  420. You can do this, Moses.

  421. I believe in you.

  422. God doesn't do that at all.

  423. God doesn't try and puff him up at all.

  424. This is not an issue of Moses

  425. having more self-esteem.

  426. This is an issue of Moses

  427. having more God-esteem.

  428. As Moses lists his list of excuses,

  429. I imagine the burning bush just nodding.

  430. Yeah.

  431. Yeah, no, you are not gifted.

  432. Yeah, you do really suck.

  433. You are quite unimpressive.

  434. No, that's right, Moses.

  435. You can't actually do this.

  436. But none of this depends on Moses.

  437. God's answers all the way through are,

  438. I am with you.

  439. This is all about God and not Moses.

  440. The joy of our God

  441. is that when he calls us to follow him

  442. and sends us out,

  443. he doesn't leave us on our own.

  444. God answers every single one

  445. of Moses' questions

  446. with power and strength

  447. that is from God.

  448. When God calls someone

  449. like a prophet or Moses here

  450. in this situation or us,

  451. he gives us our resources

  452. to do what we've been called to do.

  453. And God is with us.

  454. God uses unimpressive people

  455. to do impressive things

  456. because we are ordinary people

  457. with an extraordinary God.

  458. This is how God calls people.

  459. He calls us to the same thing.

  460. He calls us to follow and serve him.

  461. He doesn't bring people into him

  462. without also sending them out

  463. with love and compassion

  464. and the words of the gospel.

  465. And he equips us

  466. and resources us

  467. to be on about his ministry.

  468. And most importantly,

  469. he is with us.

  470. So what does it look like

  471. to follow God's call?

  472. When Jesus is about to ascend to heaven

  473. after the resurrection,

  474. he says in Matthew 28,

  475. Jesus sends his disciples out,

  476. just like God sent Moses out,

  477. go out against the authorities

  478. of the land

  479. because Jesus has all authority.

  480. Jesus calls the disciples to go

  481. and promises,

  482. I am with you.

  483. This is Jesus using God's name.

  484. It's a direct reference

  485. to Exodus 3.

  486. God said,

  487. this is who I am.

  488. This is the name of God.

  489. And Jesus said,

  490. I am with you.

  491. You can go up against rulers

  492. and nations.

  493. You can go up against

  494. the Jewish church disciples.

  495. You will be persecuted.

  496. You will share the good news

  497. that I am alive

  498. all because Jesus was with them.

  499. Not only was he with them,

  500. he also gives them what they need.

  501. They're given the Holy Spirit

  502. so that they don't go out empty

  503. and they don't have to go out

  504. with fear like Moses was.

  505. Jesus said in Luke 12

  506. that when they're confronted

  507. with authorities,

  508. don't worry how to respond.

  509. Don't worry about what you have to say.

  510. The Holy Spirit will give you

  511. the words to say

  512. at the moment when you need them.

  513. Moses was given a staff.

  514. We have been given the Holy Spirit

  515. equipping us

  516. and enabling us to serve God.

  517. He gives us the courage to speak

  518. and he gives us the words.

  519. And yet,

  520. despite God's call to us,

  521. resourcing us through the power

  522. of the Holy Spirit

  523. and promises from Jesus

  524. that he is still with us,

  525. we can be like Moses.

  526. Out of our fear,

  527. we can say,

  528. I can't do that.

  529. I'm not the right person.

  530. And our fear of the situation

  531. can be larger than our fear of God.

  532. Our concern,

  533. as Kel said for us before,

  534. our concern will be,

  535. oh,

  536. what happens when I speak

  537. these words about Jesus?

  538. What happens when I just

  539. drop that into a sentence?

  540. How are they going to respond?

  541. These problems we face

  542. are larger than our God

  543. in our eyes too often.

  544. I asked you earlier

  545. how you'd think you'd respond

  546. if you were in Moses' shoes.

  547. Which one of those

  548. do you think you'd default to?

  549. Do you think you would

  550. just say,

  551. oh,

  552. I can't do this,

  553. I'm not the right person,

  554. I don't have the knowledge?

  555. Maybe,

  556. maybe you don't.

  557. And so,

  558. do you know what,

  559. as Kel has encouraged us,

  560. we need to have information,

  561. and we need to have tactics.

  562. And so,

  563. come along to the

  564. How to Share Your Faith course

  565. starting in a couple of weeks.

  566. Because,

  567. we will have those then.

  568. God has worked salvation

  569. through Jesus,

  570. and when we are saved,

  571. we are called

  572. to go out

  573. to serve Him.

  574. We're called to

  575. serve each other with love,

  576. to serve the world.

  577. And God wonderfully

  578. gives us all

  579. different gifts.

  580. calls some of us

  581. to preach

  582. on the stage

  583. like this,

  584. and He calls some of us

  585. to preach

  586. over coffee,

  587. over the fence,

  588. to our neighbours.

  589. Some

  590. to go out

  591. to other nations

  592. to love

  593. and serve people,

  594. and some to go

  595. across the road

  596. to serve

  597. and love

  598. other people.

  599. He calls

  600. all of us

  601. to give

  602. out of compassion.

  603. He calls

  604. some of us

  605. to evangelise

  606. with a capital E,

  607. to congregations

  608. of 10,000

  609. in stadiums

  610. like

  611. has happened

  612. years ago.

  613. But He calls

  614. us all

  615. to evangelise.

  616. And so,

  617. a question is,

  618. well,

  619. how do I know

  620. what God

  621. has called me to?

  622. I don't want

  623. to do the wrong thing.

  624. You know,

  625. it was easy for Moses.

  626. He had God speak

  627. directly to him

  628. through a burning bush.

  629. Where's my burning bush?

  630. God,

  631. I want to know

  632. what you want me to do.

  633. Tell me what to do.

  634. We all have a desire

  635. to be purposeful

  636. and to make a difference.

  637. Let me encourage you,

  638. start where you are.

  639. God has placed you

  640. where you are

  641. for a reason.

  642. He wants you there

  643. and you can make

  644. a difference for God

  645. where you are.

  646. So begin where you are.

  647. If you are a parent,

  648. disciple your kids.

  649. Imagine the impact

  650. you can have

  651. through your kids

  652. and your kids'

  653. friendship group,

  654. let alone

  655. your kids'

  656. friends'

  657. parents.

  658. If you are at school,

  659. the impact you can have

  660. on friends

  661. and teachers.

  662. If you are part

  663. of a family,

  664. if you have friends,

  665. ask God,

  666. God,

  667. you have me

  668. in this situation

  669. where I am.

  670. It is unique

  671. to me.

  672. How can I

  673. be serving

  674. and loving

  675. these people here?

  676. God,

  677. how are you

  678. calling me

  679. right now

  680. to do this

  681. in this situation?

  682. Even before we think,

  683. oh,

  684. God's calling me

  685. to go overseas,

  686. which is quite difficult

  687. at this moment.

  688. God's calling me

  689. to go and serve

  690. another people.

  691. How is God

  692. calling us

  693. to serve the people

  694. he has placed

  695. around us now?

  696. And yet,

  697. even when we know

  698. exactly what we are

  699. to do,

  700. we can still struggle.

  701. In the 2013

  702. Superman film,

  703. Man of Steel,

  704. I'm not sure

  705. if you've seen it.

  706. It's a fine movie

  707. if you like Superman.

  708. In this movie,

  709. Superman is confronted

  710. with a large challenge.

  711. He's got to go

  712. and fight the villains.

  713. But he's wracked

  714. with fear

  715. of what he should do.

  716. He doesn't know

  717. what he should do.

  718. And he goes to church.

  719. It's really interesting

  720. that Superman

  721. would go to church.

  722. He goes to church

  723. and he talks

  724. to the pastor there.

  725. And he's trying

  726. to work through

  727. his doubt

  728. and his fear

  729. and to understand

  730. what he needs

  731. to do next.

  732. What is he called

  733. to do to fight

  734. these villains?

  735. And it's quite

  736. interesting

  737. because this is a guy

  738. who has

  739. all of the skills.

  740. He can fly.

  741. He's bulletproof.

  742. He's got laser eyes.

  743. And yet,

  744. he's still sitting

  745. in a position of,

  746. I don't know

  747. what I should do next.

  748. We can have

  749. all the gifting.

  750. We can have

  751. all of the ability.

  752. And we can just sit there

  753. like Moses'

  754. very first

  755. and last response

  756. and go,

  757. who am I?

  758. And I just

  759. don't want to do it.

  760. We can have

  761. all the training

  762. in evangelism

  763. and discipleship

  764. and care

  765. and compassion.

  766. We can sit

  767. with Kel.

  768. We can get

  769. all the words.

  770. We can know

  771. how to evangelize.

  772. We can have

  773. the ability

  774. to do it

  775. and we can

  776. also just

  777. pull back

  778. and say,

  779. I don't want

  780. to do it.

  781. God

  782. sends someone else.

  783. What helps us

  784. in that situation

  785. is not more knowledge.

  786. It is not more training.

  787. It's not more self-esteem.

  788. It's not more courage.

  789. I just need to pull up

  790. my socks and do it.

  791. It is not more self-esteem.

  792. It is more

  793. God

  794. esteem.

  795. The insurmountable,

  796. unfathomable,

  797. incalculable

  798. God

  799. encounters us

  800. in Jesus.

  801. The Jesus

  802. we see

  803. in the Bible.

  804. We can know

  805. him not because

  806. our minds

  807. can understand

  808. the infinite

  809. but because

  810. he made himself

  811. low.

  812. Bound by skin

  813. and muscles

  814. and bone

  815. which could be

  816. pierced and whipped.

  817. This God

  818. chooses us

  819. unimpressive people

  820. to achieve

  821. his extraordinary work.

  822. He finds us

  823. I'll describe

  824. I'll talk about me

  825. because I don't want to say

  826. you're all unimpressive

  827. and ordinary

  828. even though I think

  829. I already have.

  830. He finds people

  831. like me

  832. ordinary people

  833. and says

  834. I am

  835. with you.

  836. I have got this.

  837. It actually doesn't

  838. depend on you.

  839. I have got this.

  840. got this.

  841. You follow me

  842. when I call you

  843. obey me.

  844. In the coming weeks

  845. we're going to see

  846. that God does

  847. some amazing things

  848. through Moses.

  849. But he also

  850. promises to do

  851. amazing things

  852. through us.

  853. That he would

  854. first of all

  855. save us.

  856. God's plan for us

  857. is that he would

  858. sanctify us.

  859. He is making us

  860. more like Jesus

  861. today.

  862. And God also

  863. chooses to use

  864. people like us

  865. to do his amazing

  866. miraculous work

  867. of seeing people

  868. saved to come

  869. to know and love him.

  870. When we trust him

  871. and know he is

  872. with us

  873. we can obey

  874. his call.

  875. Let me pray.

  876. dear heavenly

  877. father

  878. I thank you so

  879. much that

  880. you do choose

  881. to use

  882. unimpressive

  883. normal people

  884. like us.

  885. Lord

  886. that is

  887. in and of

  888. itself

  889. a wonderful

  890. miracle.

  891. Lord

  892. you have done

  893. so much

  894. for us

  895. in Jesus

  896. and Lord

  897. we want

  898. to see

  899. you do

  900. wonderful miracles

  901. in our lives

  902. and through

  903. us.

  904. Lord

  905. help us

  906. to hear

  907. your call

  908. to listen

  909. to what you

  910. have to say

  911. to us.

  912. Make it

  913. obvious

  914. so that

  915. we can

  916. obey.

  917. Lord

  918. with our

  919. fears

  920. with our

  921. desires

  922. to pull

  923. back

  924. and avoid

  925. doing this

  926. Lord

  927. don't give us

  928. courage

  929. give us

  930. trust in you

  931. Lord.

  932. Amen.
