  1. On Boxing Day 1944, a Japanese Imperial Army intelligent officer, Hiro Onado, was dropped off at Laban Island of the Philippines during World War II.

  2. He and three other soldiers were ordered to do all he could to hamper the Allies on the island, including destroying the airstrip and the pier at the harbor.

  3. The order also stated that under no circumstance was he to surrender or to take his own life.

  4. He took the order to heart, so he spent 29 years hiding out in the Philippine jungle after the war was ended in August 1945.

  5. Until his former commander traveled from Japan back to the island to relieve him from his duty by the Emperor's order in 1974.

  6. For 29 years, Onado and his companions carried out guerrilla activities and engaged in several shootouts with the local police.

  7. They had many pieces of evidence that the war has ended.

  8. The first one was in October 1945, when he saw an airdrop leaflet announcing that Japan had surrendered.

  9. But their heart was not convinced and decided to stay hiding.

  10. One of his companions surrendered in 1950, and another one was killed in 1954.

  11. Onado finally lost his last companion in 1972 after another shootout.

  12. In February 1974, a young Japanese university jobber, Norio Tsuzuki, came to the island to look for him,

  13. wanting to listen to Lieutenant Onado, wanting to listen to Lieutenant Onado.

  14. When asked by Suzuki, why would you not come out from the jungle?

  15. Onado said he was waiting for his superior officer to relieve him of his order.

  16. So both government organized for his former commander to travel back to the island to order him to surrender formally.

  17. The stubborn refusal of hero or another to surrender for 29 years caused constant disturbance and trouble for the locals on the Philippines island.

  18. They stole their crops, they killed their livestock, and even some farmers too.

  19. Today's chapter, we will also witness a nation being assaulted by a series of disasters,

  20. and a leader who, despite these disasters, exacerbated the suffering of its people by repeatedly refusing to choose what is good and right.

  21. We will learn about Pharaoh and the plate,

  22. but most of all we will learn about the power and mercy of God,

  23. and what will it take for you to surrender all of your life to God.

  24. Last week in chapter 3 and 4, we saw how God called and equipped Moses for the task he is about to do,

  25. by promising that he will be with him always.

  26. After a couple of chapters of going back and forth,

  27. we finally see Moses go up to Pharaoh in chapter 5 to deliver God's demand.

  28. He approached Pharaoh with his brother Aaron and proclaimed to him in chapter 5 verse 1,

  29. this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, say,

  30. let my people go so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.

  31. Moses.

  32. They did an incredible boat at risking their life to make such a demand upon Pharaoh,

  33. but they did it without compromise.

  34. And there is no mention of Moses in this world.

  35. They were speaking for God.

  36. Moses finally realized that and took to his heart that God's liberation of his people

  37. would be fulfilled through God's power, not his.

  38. Moses was full of fear and self-centeredness before meeting the living God,

  39. but God helped him to repent of his pride.

  40. He is now confident and focused on God's power and began to die to himself.

  41. In the New Testament, we see the disciples of Jesus experience the same kind of changes

  42. before and after the cross and the resurrection.

  43. They were changed because they have met the living Christ

  44. and they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

  45. Disciples of Jesus Christ were transformed because they have met the great I Am.

  46. If you are a Christian, are you living a transformed and transforming life?

  47. Are you growing?

  48. How have you been surrendering your whole life to live a life

  49. that centers on glorifies and honor God?

  50. When Moses approached Pharaoh, he did not come to negotiate.

  51. He came with a simple command that based on the authority of the living God.

  52. He delivered to Pharaoh God's demand,

  53. let my people go so that they may worship me.

  54. Now it was Pharaoh's turn to encounter the power of the living God.

  55. How would he respond?

  56. Would he be transformed like Moses?

  57. Would he have changed of heart and obeyed the demand of God?

  58. Moses' faith has increased through his interaction with God

  59. as God transformed his heart and his willingness to trust and serve him.

  60. When it comes to Pharaoh, his story will witness an exact opposite dynamic.

  61. Pharaoh's heart became like Moses' heart, hardened by self-love and pride.

  62. But unlike Moses, Pharaoh's heart proceeds on a path of further hardening.

  63. Pharaoh's heart never softened.

  64. Instead, it becomes increasingly resistant to God's love and will.

  65. He stubbornly refused to yield his heart towards God.

  66. During his first encounter with Moses and Aaron,

  67. in Pharaoh's response to God's demand to free his people

  68. and allow them to go to worship him,

  69. we can see the starting condition of his heart.

  70. Pharaoh responds with contempt in Exodus 5, verse 2, saying,

    Exodus 5:2

  71. Who is the Lord that I should obey him and let Israel go?

  72. I do not know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go.

  73. Pharaoh's reply seems blatant disrespect to God's message.

  74. How dare he speak like that to our almighty God?

  75. But the statement of, I do not know the Lord,

  76. is a true statement of where he is at.

  77. Before his encounter with God,

  78. he considered himself a son of God,

  79. and no one tells him what to do.

  80. Pharaoh had not previously encountered God or his message.

  81. In many ways, he was just like the rest of us in this regard.

  82. When many of us first heard God's message through the scripture,

  83. some would have a similar reaction to this claim on our life.

  84. Like Pharaoh, we say in our hearts,

  85. Who is the Lord that I should obey him?

  86. And I do not know the Lord.

  87. Every person who does not know God begins in the same position that Pharaoh occupied,

  88. inclined not to accept God's truth.

  89. But God was not done with Pharaoh or any one of us.

  90. That is just the beginning.

  91. God responded to Pharaoh's confession of ignorance of him

  92. by unleashing a series of events

  93. that were meant to ensure that Pharaoh and Egypt would know the Lord.

  94. I will speak about those events

  95. of how God revealed his power to Pharaoh and his people in detail later.

  96. But let's keep looking at Pharaoh's heart now.

  97. We saw in Exodus 5, verse 2, that Pharaoh is like a lot of us.

    Exodus 5:2

  98. When we begin our respective journey to find out more about God,

  99. we begin this journey with an ignorant and resistant heart.

  100. But let's see what happened to his heart

  101. as God revealed himself through the power of the plagues.

  102. As each successive plague comes upon Egypt,

  103. Pharaoh's heart has only one reaction.

  104. It becomes hardened to God.

  105. That is an oversimplification of what is transpiring in Pharaoh's heart.

  106. In his commentary, J.A. Mottia points out that

  107. when it comes to Pharaoh's heart and his progressive hardening,

  108. we encounter at least three ways to describe this process.

  109. First, in Exodus 7,

  110. in verse 13, it tells us that Pharaoh's heart become hard.

  111. And verse 14, the Lord says Pharaoh's heart is unyeweling.

  112. Then in verse 23, Pharaoh did not take the first plague to heart.

  113. He did not allow his heart to be touched.

  114. Then if we go over to chapter 8,

  115. from verse 15 to 32,

  116. it declared that Pharaoh's hardened his own heart.

  117. So verse 19 states that Pharaoh's heart was hard,

  118. just as the Lord has said.

  119. And finally, when we come to chapter 9,

  120. verse 7, it says that Pharaoh investigated the truth of God's word,

  121. yet his heart was unyeweling.

  122. So there's this statement in verse 12 that

  123. the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart.

  124. We can see in chapter 9 and even chapter 10

  125. that Pharaoh even admit and confess that he has sinned.

  126. But all aspects of Pharaoh's heart come to a culmination

  127. in Exodus 9, 34 to 10, verse 1,

  128. where Paul had just read out for us.

  129. But I'll read that again.

  130. Exodus 9, verse 34.

    Exodus 9:34

  131. When Pharaoh saw that the rain and hell and thunder had stopped,

  132. he sinned again.

  133. He and his official hardened their hearts.

  134. So Pharaoh's heart was hard,

  135. and he would not let the Israelites go,

  136. just as the Lord has said through Moses.

  137. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  138. Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart

  139. and the heart of his official,

  140. so that I may perform these signs of mine among them.

  141. There are two perspectives to the hardening of Pharaoh's heart,

  142. Pharaoh and God.

  143. By his moral choice,

  144. Pharaoh let his heart become increasingly set in its way,

  145. getting more stubborn and committed more and more irreversibly

  146. to a cause of cultural genocide regarding the Israelites.

  147. Pharaoh is responsible for the hardening of his own heart

  148. through his action and choice.

  149. God has revealed himself to Pharaoh,

  150. and Pharaoh chose to respond with rebellion.

  151. And with each rebellion,

  152. Pharaoh's heart becomes more stubborn in its wickedness.

  153. His heart becomes more brutal and rigid

  154. with each sinful choice he makes.

  155. From God's perspective,

  156. as a moral ruler of this world,

  157. the hardening of Pharaoh's heart

  158. is nothing more than a statement

  159. that the point of no return has been reached.

  160. Pharaoh's own choice

  161. had made his heart so hard

  162. that the only justly,

  163. due consequence

  164. is to judge that his heart is hardened.

  165. And God took the full responsibility

  166. as creator of everything in this world

  167. to say,

  168. I have hardened his heart.

  169. The story of the hardening of Pharaoh's heart

  170. revealed to us that

  171. there is a point at which

  172. God will no longer endure or bear

  173. our rebellions towards him,

  174. but rightfully judge us for what we are.

  175. After repeated rebellions,

  176. whereby Pharaoh hardened himself

  177. against the revelation of God,

  178. God judged him for his disobedience

  179. and sealed his heart of stone.

  180. Don Carson's book,

  181. For the Love of God,

  182. which I was using for my devotional earlier,

  183. it says that

  184. God has not hardened a morally neutral man.

  185. He has pronounced judgment on a wicked man.

  186. Hell itself is a place

  187. where repentance is no longer possible.

  188. God's hardening has the effect

  189. of imposing that sentence

  190. a little earlier than usual.

  191. God's hardening

  192. and Pharaoh's hardening of his own heart

  193. are mutually complementary.

  194. The dynamic at work in Pharaoh's heart

  195. are not unique to him,

  196. but revealing a general truth

  197. about God and his sovereignty

  198. over every human.

  199. God is never complicit

  200. in instigating or causing sin,

  201. but he is not required

  202. to stop us from having what we desire,

  203. even if it is sinful.

  204. The cycle of hardening

  205. that we see in Pharaoh's heart

  206. is not limited to those

  207. who do not believe in God.

  208. Christian can also become

  209. entangled in self-hardening cycle,

  210. whereby the hearts become stubborn

  211. towards God.

  212. We build up a tolerance

  213. to a particular sin in our life.

  214. We try to limit our obedience.

  215. Instead of throwing ourselves

  216. into God's service,

  217. we try to limit what we do.

  218. What's the least I can get away with?

  219. How far do I have to go?

  220. Why should I have to deny my feelings?

  221. Rather than suffering

  222. for doing the right thing

  223. and obeying God,

  224. we all want comfort

  225. and self-gloafification.

  226. And we get entangled

  227. in a temporary,

  228. momentary release

  229. that sin gives us.

  230. When it comes to obedience,

  231. the writer of Hebrew

  232. told us that

  233. in chapter 5, 8 to 9,

  234. that although Jesus

  235. was the son of God,

  236. he learned obedience

  237. from what he suffered.

  238. And once made perfect,

  239. he became the source

  240. of eternal salvation

  241. for all who obey him.

  242. Jesus obeyed God

  243. even to the point of death

  244. on the cross.

  245. God convicted us

  246. of our sin

  247. by Jesus' death

  248. and softening our heart

  249. by sacrificing his own son

  250. to bear the judgment

  251. of our rebellions.

  252. God become,

  253. Jesus become the source

  254. of eternal salvation

  255. for all

  256. who committed

  257. their whole life

  258. to obey him.

  259. What happened

  260. to the heart of Pharaoh

  261. teaches us about

  262. the power and sovereignty

  263. of God's will.

  264. It reminds us that

  265. the significant changes

  266. between the believers

  267. and unbelievers

  268. are not the absence

  269. of sin,

  270. but rather

  271. the presence

  272. of God's grace

  273. in softening,

  274. convicting,

  275. and renewing

  276. the believers' hearts.

  277. Pharaoh's

  278. continuous rebellions

  279. and disregard

  280. towards God's call

  281. to turn to him

  282. to lead

  283. to severe consequences.

  284. A series of disasters

  285. before Egypt

  286. in 10 plates.

  287. Exodus 7-10

  288. covers the first 9,

  289. and the next week

  290. we'll talk about

  291. the last plate.

  292. So what do these plates

  293. teach us about God?

  294. The plate

  295. serves many purposes,

  296. and God refers

  297. to the plates

  298. in chapter 7,

  299. verse 3

  300. as signs and wonders.

  301. The Bible tells us

  302. that signs and wonders

  303. are often performed

  304. by God

  305. for a very explicit

  306. and truthful purpose.

  307. first,

  308. there were

  309. a tool

  310. of judgment

  311. upon Pharaoh

  312. and Egypt

  313. for rebellions

  314. against God

  315. and the abuse

  316. of God's people.

  317. Secondly,

  318. they are tools

  319. of authentication.

  320. They often serve

  321. to validate

  322. an authenticated

  323. message

  324. of God's messages.

  325. The plates

  326. conveyed to Pharaoh

  327. that Moses

  328. that Moses

  329. was a representative

  330. of the Lord

  331. working with his authority.

  332. In the New Testament,

  333. Jesus also

  334. used signs and wonders

  335. to authenticate

  336. his roles

  337. as a savior

  338. and confirm

  339. his divinity.

  340. The third purpose

  341. of the signs and wonders

  342. is they point

  343. beyond themselves

  344. to a more

  345. significant truth.

  346. The plates

  347. immediately

  348. revealed God's power.

  349. They answered

  350. Pharaoh's declaration

  351. back in 5,

  352. verse 2

  353. that he did not

  354. know the God

  355. of Israel.

  356. Between 5 to

  357. chapter 11,

  358. God declared

  359. numerous times

  360. that the purpose

  361. of his action

  362. are so that

  363. Pharaoh and Egypt

  364. would know the Lord.

  365. Those references

  366. are shown

  367. on the screen.

  368. In all these

  369. chapters

  370. in each of the plates,

  371. God constantly

  372. repeats,

  373. you will know

  374. that I am the Lord.

  375. They also point

  376. beyond this

  377. immediate event

  378. to a greater truth

  379. about God's patience

  380. and not wanting

  381. anyone to perish

  382. but to come

  383. to repentance.

  384. God is powerful

  385. and is a God

  386. of mercy

  387. and salvation.

  388. All these chapters

  389. are God's

  390. revealing himself.

  391. The purpose

  392. of the plate

  393. was to convey

  394. the knowledge

  395. of God

  396. not simply

  397. to Egypt

  398. or Israel

  399. but the world.

  400. Later in chapter

  401. 34 of Exodus,

  402. it refers to God

  403. as a compassionate

  404. and merciful,

  405. slow to anger,

  406. lavish unfailing love

  407. to a thousand generations

  408. and forgiving wickedness,

  409. rebellions and sin.

  410. Yet,

  411. he does not leave

  412. the guilty unpunished.

  413. God is patient

  414. in his application

  415. of judgment.

  416. His compassion

  417. and mercy

  418. are demonstrated

  419. because he did not

  420. send down

  421. the full force

  422. of his plate

  423. until the seventh plate

  424. which he said

  425. in chapter 9,

  426. verse 15

  427. will wipe

  428. Pharaoh

  429. and Egypt

  430. off the earth.

  431. But before he does so,

  432. he said in verse 19,

  433. keep an order now

  434. to bring your livestock

  435. and everything

  436. you have in the field

  437. to a place

  438. of shelter

  439. because the hell

  440. will fall

  441. on every person

  442. and the animal

  443. that has not

  444. been brought in

  445. and is still

  446. out in the field

  447. and they will die.

  448. Pharaoh

  449. has shown

  450. no regards

  451. for the suffering

  452. of his people

  453. for six plates,

  454. repeatedly rebelling

  455. against God.

  456. This plate

  457. will take

  458. human life

  459. and the correct

  460. response

  461. means life

  462. and death.

  463. And what was

  464. the response

  465. of the people

  466. at a time?

  467. Let's look at

  468. verse 20

  469. of chapter 9.

  470. Those officials

  471. of Pharaoh

  472. who fear

  473. the word

  474. of the Lord

  475. hurry

  476. to bring

  477. their slave

  478. and livestock

  479. inside,

  480. but those

  481. who ignore

  482. the word of God

  483. left their slave

  484. and livestock

  485. in the field.

  486. God provides

  487. Pharaoh

  488. and the Egyptians

  489. with ten plates

  490. to spark

  491. repentance

  492. in them.

  493. Those that God

  494. have chosen

  495. to show

  496. mercy

  497. respond

  498. accordingly

  499. and were saved

  500. and those

  501. refuse to hear

  502. the repeated

  503. warning

  504. and upset.

  505. God's

  506. patience

  507. and mercy

  508. are sharply

  509. contrasted

  510. and revealed

  511. by the stubbornness

  512. and cruelty

  513. of Pharaoh

  514. and his officials.

  515. The plates

  516. reveal that

  517. God is

  518. patiently

  519. merciful,

  520. but they

  521. also refuse

  522. a point

  523. of no return.

  524. This plate

  525. a comfort

  526. assurance

  527. for those

  528. who trust

  529. in God

  530. and horrific

  531. certainty

  532. of judgment

  533. for those

  534. who do not.

  535. In the gospel

  536. and the rest

  537. of the New Testament,

  538. the signs

  539. and wonders

  540. performed by Jesus

  541. and the gospel's

  542. very proclamation

  543. serve a similar

  544. ultimate purpose

  545. as the plates.

  546. The gospel,

  547. like the plates,

  548. serves simultaneously

  549. to assure those

  550. who feed the word

  551. of the Lord.

  552. Those who trust God

  553. for his saving power

  554. and took the right

  555. action to respond

  556. will have life.

  557. And remind those

  558. who ignore the word

  559. of the Lord

  560. that while

  561. God is patient,

  562. God will ultimately

  563. bring judgment

  564. upon those

  565. who reject

  566. Jesus Christ

  567. and fail to

  568. acknowledge

  569. what God is doing

  570. for and in

  571. their life.

  572. And at that time,

  573. only death

  574. remains.

  575. God said

  576. in chapter 9,

  577. 16

  578. and chapter 10,

  579. verse 2,

  580. that one other

  581. purpose for

  582. these signs

  583. is to show

  584. that I may

  585. show you

  586. my power

  587. and that my name

  588. may be proclaimed

  589. in all the earth

  590. and that you

  591. may tell your

  592. children and

  593. your grandchildren

  594. how I dealt

  595. harshly with

  596. the Egyptians

  597. and how I performed

  598. my signs

  599. among them

  600. and that you

  601. may know

  602. that I am

  603. the Lord.

  604. What happened

  605. to Pharaoh

  606. and those

  607. Egyptians

  608. who ignored

  609. God's word

  610. were designed

  611. for the future

  612. proclamation

  613. that the God

  614. we learn

  615. from the Bible

  616. is the only

  617. true God

  618. the world's

  619. creator.

  620. Like many

  621. cultures of

  622. today,

  623. Pharaoh and

  624. the Egyptians

  625. believed in

  626. many gods,

  627. the sun gods,

  628. the river gods,

  629. the harvard gods.

  630. Pharaoh was

  631. seen as a

  632. son of gods

  633. so his

  634. issue was

  635. why should I

  636. listen to

  637. your God

  638. when I have

  639. got my

  640. gods of

  641. my own?

  642. He was

  643. saying,

  644. don't impose

  645. your belief

  646. on me.

  647. People are

  648. not offended

  649. if you tell

  650. them you

  651. are a

  652. Christian,

  653. choosing

  654. Christianity

  655. as a

  656. religion or

  657. spirituality

  658. as long

  659. as you

  660. do not

  661. proclaim

  662. that Jesus

  663. is the

  664. only way

  665. to God

  666. and only

  667. truth and

  668. relevant God.

  669. the place

  670. are God's

  671. ways of

  672. distinguishing

  673. himself as

  674. the only

  675. true God

  676. and only

  677. relevant God

  678. and declaring

  679. that he is

  680. the only God

  681. worth obeying.

  682. God defeated

  683. the gods of

  684. Egypt and

  685. the gods of

  686. our culture

  687. that believe

  688. all religions

  689. are valid.

  690. Everyone has

  691. a right to

  692. live how

  693. they like.

  694. Many people

  695. proclaim by

  696. their life

  697. choices that

  698. they are

  699. their own

  700. God.

  701. they

  702. determine

  703. who they

  704. are and

  705. how they

  706. will live

  707. their life.

  708. A lot

  709. of Christians

  710. also does

  711. the same.

  712. They

  713. choose

  714. when,

  715. where,

  716. and how

  717. they worship

  718. God,

  719. as if being

  720. a Christian

  721. is all

  722. about

  723. themselves.

  724. To them,

  725. the gathering

  726. of believers

  727. is nothing

  728. to do

  729. with mutual

  730. encouragement

  731. of one

  732. and others.

  733. others.

  734. Even

  735. being

  736. physically

  737. among

  738. believers,

  739. they will

  740. click in

  741. and click

  742. off without

  743. making any

  744. effort to

  745. interact or

  746. engage with

  747. one another.

  748. God's

  749. confession.

  750. They may

  751. confess they

  752. have sinned

  753. when the

  754. sufferings and

  755. consequences of

  756. sin come,

  757. but go on

  758. sinning when

  759. the suffering

  760. are taken

  761. away.

  762. but

  763. deciding to

  764. become a

  765. Christian

  766. was only

  767. the beginning.

  768. It matters

  769. how you

  770. are living

  771. and growing

  772. in your

  773. obedience to

  774. God's

  775. words.

  776. And more

  777. importantly,

  778. it's your

  779. motivation

  780. and your

  781. attitude

  782. behind those

  783. obedience.

  784. Jesus

  785. has

  786. come,

  787. has

  788. became

  789. the source

  790. of eternal

  791. salvation for

  792. all who

  793. obey him.

  794. him because

  795. he learned

  796. obedience from

  797. what he

  798. suffered.

  799. He suffered

  800. the rejection

  801. of man,

  802. he suffered

  803. the cross,

  804. and ultimately

  805. the rejection

  806. of God

  807. on the cross.

  808. By his

  809. death and

  810. resurrection,

  811. he bears

  812. the consequences

  813. and the

  814. punishment that

  815. our rebellion's

  816. stubborn

  817. hearts

  818. deserves.

  819. The

  820. resurrection

  821. of Jesus

  822. is the

  823. most

  824. excellent

  825. signs and

  826. wonder

  827. that God

  828. performed.

  829. It means

  830. to point us

  831. to the

  832. powerful and

  833. merciful God,

  834. to acknowledge

  835. his patience

  836. in dealing

  837. with us.

  838. not all

  839. people who

  840. have seen

  841. God's

  842. signs and

  843. wonder

  844. will end

  845. up believing

  846. and fear

  847. God.

  848. Many

  849. will

  850. choose

  851. to stay

  852. stubborn

  853. like

  854. lieutenant

  855. or

  856. another

  857. or

  858. Pharaoh

  859. and his

  860. officials.

  861. But to

  862. you who

  863. are here

  864. in prison

  865. today,

  866. because

  867. Jesus

  868. has fought

  869. for us

  870. and won,

  871. we no

  872. longer need to

  873. hide in the

  874. jungle of

  875. life.

  876. Today,

  877. God's

  878. word has

  879. come to

  880. you to

  881. relieve you

  882. and to

  883. order you

  884. to surrender.

  885. It

  886. proclaim to

  887. us the

  888. name of

  889. God is

  890. Jesus

  891. Christ.

  892. Hurry,

  893. today is

  894. your time

  895. to surrender

  896. and come

  897. inside Jesus

  898. to be

  899. saved.

  900. Don't

  901. stay out

  902. in the

  903. field and

  904. ignore God's

  905. word.

  906. Amen.

  907. Amen.

  908. Amen.

  909. Amen.

  910. Amen.

  911. Amen.

  912. Amen.

  913. Amen.

  914. Amen.

  915. Amen.

  916. Amen.

  917. Amen.

  918. Amen.

  919. Amen.

  920. Amen.
