  1. Morning, everyone. Great to be in church with you and online with you. One of the things that I

  2. love reading about is military history. I've always had an interest in it and a bunch of

  3. little facts, such as this one. It is known as the shortest war in history. In fact, it's one of the

  4. greatest mismatches of power of all time. It occurred on the 27th of August, 1896. It's known

  5. as the Anglo-Zanzibar War. It turns out a usurper had taken the throne in Zanzibar, which is now part

  6. of Tanzania in Africa. It was an area that was kind of controlled by the British at the time.

  7. The British didn't like the fact that this person had sidestepped the process and taken

  8. the throne. They hit him with an ultimatum for this pretend ruler to step down, for him to stand

  9. down his troops and to evacuate the palace, to vacate the palace. In the meantime, while that

  10. ultimatum was out there, the British forces brought their navy in, their marines, their sailors, and they

  11. managed to get about 900 locals on side. As it turns out, the ultimatum was ignored.

  12. I think the deadline was something like nine o'clock on a Monday morning or something like that. It was

  13. ignored. At 9.01, the bombardment started. The pretender to the throne lost 500 soldiers,

  14. and the British lost one. When they say lost one, they had one soldier wounded. I think a self-inflicted

  15. wound, but that was all. It was a massive mismatch of power. In 38 minutes, it was all done.

  16. 38 minutes, and the white flag went up above the palace. One of the biggest mismatches of power in

  17. history. But it's not as big as the mismatch we've seen in the last couple of chapters in Exodus and

  18. what John took us to last week. God's chosen people, Israel, are in slavery in Egypt, and through Moses,

  19. the God of all creation calls Pharaoh to release his people that they might worship him and serve him.

  20. Release them from slavery here that they might serve me over here. And Pharaoh, as we saw last week,

  21. defiantly declares, who is this Lord that I should obey him? In other words, I will not submit to him.

  22. I will not obey that ultimatum. And I'm going to continue on enslaving God's people. And so God

  23. shows him, and in fact, as it says in the early chapters of Exodus, that all the world might see

  24. that he is on the throne alone. And so what he does is, one by one, he defeats the pretend gods of Egypt.

  25. And today, we come to the final one, the final plague. We've had nine. This is the last plague.

  26. This final plague, in fact, gets us to the heart and to the uniqueness of the God of the Bible and

  27. of the Christian faith. So what I want us to see today, three things. If you've got the St. Paul's

  28. app, it'd be great if you open it up, because you can see the outline there. I've got three main points

  29. and a couple of other sub points in there. What I want us to see is what this passage says about the

  30. sacrificial lamb. I want to then trace through the Bible the drama of the lamb, and finally,

  31. to issue a call to look to the lamb. So first of all, the sacrificial lamb. Nine times,

  32. God has called Pharaoh to release his people, or there will be a plague. Nine times, they have ignored it.

  33. And every time, as John said last week, every single plague is a taking down of one of the deities of

  34. Egypt. Nine times, he's called it. Nine times, he said there will be punishment. Nine times,

  35. there have been a plague. Every single time, they've ignored it, and there is a consequence.

  36. And the final straw is in chapter 12, verse 12. This is the final one.

  37. On that same night, I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and

  38. animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. And so the final plague

  39. is the final defeat of Egypt's deities. And the Pharaoh was regarded as the incarnation

  40. of one of one of those deities, the sun god. The Egyptian deity, who in fact was defeated in the

  41. previous plague, the plague of darkness. And so this final plague, number 10, the final plague

  42. is to kill the firstborn, is to destroy the incarnation. This is the final defeat.

  43. Of the gods of Egypt. And in verse 23, Moses is speaking to the Israelites about what God has

  44. said. And he says this to them, he, that's God, will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses

  45. and strike you down. One of the themes that runs through the whole Bible is that when you violate

  46. God's design for creation, when you violate his design for our bodies and for relationships, in fact,

  47. he's designed for everything in life, what gets unleashed at that point are forces of decay and chaos.

  48. And all this decay and chaos has a trajectory towards a final accounting, final reckoning,

  49. a final judgment for living life as if the God of this universe does not exist, and going about daily

  50. life, violating all of his good purposes for life. And this is what this account here in Exodus 11 and 12

  51. is pointing us towards. When God says the destroyer will come, he is saying that the time of reckoning is upon you.

  52. And he's bringing it. He's the one who's bringing the reckoning. And on this one night in Egypt,

  53. the destroyer will come and they will bring, he will bring judgment. Justice will be upheld for the

  54. oppression of Israel. God will hold them accountable for violating his will, his design, and his purposes

  55. for life. And in fact, the Bible, the thing of the Bible is that every single human being will be held

  56. accountable for violating his will, design, and purpose for life.

  57. But in Exodus 11 and 12, alongside this news of devastating, irreversible judgment to come upon

  58. the most powerful nation on earth, there is good news in here. God also reveals at the same time

  59. that there is only one way to stand against the destroyer. There is only one way to be protected.

  60. There is only one way to find refuge when the destroyer comes. And the answer is a lamb.

  61. A lamb. That's it. Our little sheep. How on earth can Israel be protected from the most devastating

  62. power in the universe by Curly and Sean? I mean, how's that possible?

  63. It doesn't make any sense. This is, however, what God instructs here. He instructs his people to kill

  64. a perfect lamb. Put the blood of the lamb on your doorposts and eat the lamb in haste. And when the

  65. destroyer comes, the destroyer will notice that your house is covered in the lamb, the lamb's blood,

  66. blood, and it will pass over you. And then you'll be liberated from slavery.

  67. That's the essence of Exodus 11 and 12.

  68. Now, that is confusing at best. But it's also offensive to the modern person.

  69. This passage here that was just read out to us makes no sense at all unless it's put in the context

  70. context of the whole Bible in its historical context. We need to understand the drama of the lamb

  71. to get the meaning of what's happening here in Exodus 11 and 12.

  72. So let's look at the drama of the lamb.

  73. The first scene of the drama of the lamb in the Bible is Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22.

  74. So if you've got your Bibles, you can flick over to Genesis 22. We'll be there for a little bit.

  75. God instructs Abraham to offer up his only son, Isaac, as a sacrifice to him.

  76. Now, when I read that as a modern person, my instinct is to think how really inappropriate

  77. thing for God to say to Abraham to go and offer up his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice. It's insane to

  78. the modern mind and especially the modern Western sensibilities. Surely Abraham would have thought

  79. exactly the same as I do. Surely Abraham has the same mind on this that I do.

  80. No. No, he wouldn't have. He exists in a different cultural context than we do.

  81. We tend to think, and especially those of us who are marinating in a Western culture,

  82. we think in terms of individualism. Ancient people didn't have individual aspirations.

  83. Aspirations were for the prominence and for the success and for the prosperity of their family.

  84. It was deeply connected to their family and tribe. If a family member acted shamefully,

  85. then the whole family was responsible for that member acting shamefully.

  86. We don't think like that in Western culture and certainly not in Australian Western culture.

  87. We are our own people. We are radically individualistic.

  88. And so if I've got a delinquent brother or sister, that's their problem, not mine.

  89. If they're shameful, that's no shame on me. That's not how it worked in Abraham's culture.

  90. We are radically individualistic. And yet the reality is for us is that we are so much the product

  91. of our family for both good and bad. Abraham also existed in a time and a culture when the firstborn son

  92. got everything. They inherited the entire estate.

  93. And so God's message to Abraham in Genesis 22 was absolutely crystal clear to him,

  94. even if it's confusing or monstrous to us.

  95. In fact, Exodus 22 verse 29 helps us understand what is happening here in Genesis 22.

    Exodus 22:29

  96. You must give me the firstborn of your sons.

  97. Do the same with your cattle and your sheep.

  98. The life of every firstborn was God's unless the life of that firstborn was redeemed.

  99. Every year they had to pay the price of redemption for the firstborn.

  100. Otherwise, the life of the firstborn would be forfeited for the sake of the family.

  101. And the clear message to ancient Israel was that there is a debt that hangs over every family.

  102. There's a debt.

  103. The firstborn was liable for the life of that family.

  104. And the way of life of that family.

  105. The family goes stray.

  106. The firstborn's responsible.

  107. That makes no sense to the modern individualistic mind,

  108. but it's absolutely crystal clear to Abraham what's happening here.

  109. And that's why Abraham doesn't balk at it.

  110. But if God...

  111. Take God out of it.

  112. If a voice came to Abraham and said,

  113. Abraham, go into the tent right now and kill Sarah.

  114. He would have gone.

  115. That's not a voice of God.

  116. That is not a message from God.

  117. That is against everything that God declares to be right and true.

  118. He would not have obeyed that one.

  119. But with Isaac, Abraham realized God was calling in the debt.

  120. This is God calling in the debt.

  121. And God had a right to do it.

  122. Isaac was going to die for the sins of Abraham and his family.

  123. And the emotion of this moment is in Genesis 22, verses 7 and 8,

    Genesis 22:7

  124. when Isaac says,

  125. Father, yes, my son, Abraham replied,

  126. the fire and the wood are here,

  127. but where is the lamb?

  128. Where's the lamb for the burnt offering?

  129. Abraham answered,

  130. God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.

  131. Abraham would have been hoping with all of his being

  132. that that would actually be true.

  133. He's not just distracting Isaac from the truth of this matter.

  134. He is hoping with all of his being that in this moment,

  135. a substitute would be provided.

  136. A lamb.

  137. So that Isaac didn't have to die for his sin.

  138. Now, for the modern mind,

  139. in our individualistic culture,

  140. this whole account here in Genesis 22 is primitive,

  141. and it's monstrous to us.

  142. The first objection that we tend to have

  143. is the fact that every single person

  144. is living wrongly and under judgment

  145. and owes God a debt.

  146. Don't like that concept at all.

  147. Most of us have been marinating in

  148. and therefore bought into the notion

  149. that we live by our own standards,

  150. we determine what is right and wrong for us,

  151. and we do that either as an individual,

  152. we do that individualistically,

  153. or we do it as a family group,

  154. as a tribe.

  155. Now, if that is you,

  156. that is you're bought into that notion,

  157. and if you have bought into that notion,

  158. you've got to know that for the vast majority,

  159. and I mean, say, the vast majority,

  160. of human existence,

  161. no one has bought into that view.

  162. No cultural group has ever bought into that view

  163. for the vast majority.

  164. So it's only just a modern concept,

  165. modern formulated idea.

  166. But if that's you and you have bought into it,

  167. that there's no rights,

  168. no absolute morals,

  169. no right and wrong that I have to comply with,

  170. I live life my way,

  171. then I want you to imagine also

  172. that you have got attached around you

  173. a special recording device

  174. that records everything you think,

  175. you do,

  176. you say,

  177. 24-7 for all of your life.

  178. Imagine that it particularly highlights

  179. every single moment

  180. when you declare

  181. how someone else ought to live.

  182. Every judgment that you have

  183. on another person

  184. because they're whatever else,

  185. they're not living up to the standards

  186. that you think that they should live up to.

  187. The standards ultimately

  188. that you say you live by

  189. that you're calling other people to live by.

  190. Imagine every one of those moments is recorded.

  191. If at the end of your life

  192. that device was attached and put there

  193. and we push record,

  194. we push play on it,

  195. let me tell you,

  196. there's not a single person

  197. who's ever lived on the face of the earth

  198. except Jesus Christ

  199. that can stand in that moment.

  200. Not a single person

  201. lives by the standards that they set.

  202. Not a single person.

  203. We can't even achieve

  204. our own standards in life.

  205. Our own moral goals.

  206. Leave the Ten Commandments out of it.

  207. Leave the golden rule out of it.

  208. None of us can even live by our own standards.

  209. Every single one of us is a hypocrite.

  210. To our own standards.

  211. None of us live properly.

  212. None of us can pass

  213. any form of moral evaluation of any sort,

  214. let alone that of a perfect God.

  215. The second objection

  216. is the idea,

  217. and again,

  218. a modern construct,

  219. that this idea of a debt

  220. that needs to be paid.

  221. We don't like that idea.

  222. The modern construct of God,

  223. if he exists,

  224. is that if he's in the business,

  225. if God does exist,

  226. his business is to love people

  227. and his business is to forgive people.

  228. Shouldn't,

  229. if he's God

  230. and he's so perfect

  231. and he's so great,

  232. shouldn't he just forgive people?

  233. Just wipe the debt clean?

  234. And so again,

  235. I have to ask you,

  236. if that's your view of God,

  237. that's your view of life,

  238. where in life are debts ever just wished away?

  239. Where?

  240. Where are debts ever in life just wished away?

  241. When someone wrongs us,

  242. a debt is established.

  243. If you take my phone

  244. and you hit it with a hammer right now

  245. and destroy it,

  246. a debt has been established.

  247. There's a value attached to this phone,

  248. you know,

  249. seven,

  250. eight hundred dollars,

  251. whatever it is,

  252. and there's only two options.

  253. If you take it and smash it,

  254. there's only two options available.

  255. Well,

  256. you pay the debt

  257. or I pay the debt.

  258. That's the only option.

  259. I either say,

  260. well,

  261. that's eight hundred dollars,

  262. please,

  263. or I say,

  264. I forgive you

  265. and release you from the debt.

  266. But the moment I

  267. say I forgive you,

  268. in that moment,

  269. I choose to pay the debt.

  270. The debt doesn't just disappear.

  271. The value of the phone

  272. doesn't just go

  273. into wherever the internet is.

  274. It doesn't just go.

  275. It's still there.

  276. Someone has to pay the debt.

  277. Either you

  278. or me.

  279. If I choose to forgive you

  280. so that you do not have to repay me for this,

  281. I have to pay for it.

  282. I either pay for it

  283. by going and buying a brand new one

  284. and therefore the value of it

  285. is costly to me

  286. or I pay for it

  287. by buying a Nokia

  288. or carrier pigeons

  289. or something,

  290. do something different.

  291. In one way or another,

  292. I pay for the debt.

  293. That is,

  294. you pay for the debt

  295. or I absorb the debt myself.

  296. It's one or the other.

  297. This happens on every area of life.

  298. If someone robs us

  299. of an opportunity

  300. or of happiness

  301. or reputation

  302. or something else,

  303. what happens in that moment

  304. is a debt is accrued.

  305. A sense of a debt

  306. is accrued.

  307. Justice has been violated

  308. and a debt

  309. has been accrued.

  310. And there are only two choices

  311. in that moment.

  312. You can make them pay

  313. by destroying their opportunities

  314. and ruining their reputation

  315. or you can forgive them.

  316. But forgiveness is agony.

  317. Forgiveness is agony

  318. because you choose in that moment

  319. to absorb that debt yourself.

  320. You don't attempt

  321. to get your reputation back

  322. by tearing down

  323. their reputation

  324. or getting your opportunities back

  325. by ruining their opportunities.

  326. Forgiveness

  327. always requires suffering.

  328. Always requires suffering.

  329. And when you don't

  330. forgive forgiveness,

  331. when you do not forgive,

  332. you suffer yourself.

  333. Evil wins.

  334. It bottles up inside of you.

  335. Debt never just vanishes.

  336. Either they pay

  337. or you pay.

  338. There is no such thing

  339. as forgiveness

  340. without a payment of the debt.

  341. And that's for you,

  342. that's for me,

  343. and that's for Abraham.

  344. And the good news is

  345. back in Genesis 22

  346. at the very last minute,

  347. God,

  348. just before Isaac

  349. is sacrificed

  350. for the sins of the family,

  351. God says,

  352. stop!

  353. And a ram

  354. was caught in a bush

  355. and it became

  356. the sacrificial sacrifice,

  357. the substitutionary sacrifice.

  358. And so then we jump back

  359. or forward as it may be,

  360. but back into Exodus

  361. and the Passover

  362. for scene two

  363. of the drama of the Lamb.

  364. And notice

  365. these two principles here

  366. are played out for us again

  367. in this context.

  368. The first principle is

  369. that we are all

  370. equally sinful

  371. and lost.

  372. We have failed to live

  373. by God's standards.

  374. We are deserving of judgment

  375. because the debt

  376. has been accrued.

  377. Have a look at Exodus 22,

  378. sorry,

  379. Exodus 12,

    Exodus 12:22

  380. verse 22.

  381. Take a bunch of hyssop

  382. and dip it into the blood

  383. in the basin

  384. and put some of the blood

  385. on the top

  386. and on the door,

  387. both sides of the door frame.

  388. None of you

  389. shall go out

  390. of the door

  391. of your house

  392. until morning.

  393. That is saying

  394. when the destroyer

  395. comes in the night,

  396. the destroyer

  397. will come

  398. for everyone.

  399. Israelite

  400. and Egyptian.

  401. The destroyer

  402. is coming

  403. not just

  404. for the firstborns

  405. of Egypt.

  406. One nation,

  407. yes,

  408. was the oppressor

  409. and one was the oppressed.

  410. One worshipped false gods

  411. and one worshipped

  412. the true God.

  413. but in

  414. and of themselves,

  415. neither Israel

  416. nor Egypt

  417. could stand

  418. in that moment

  419. of judgment.

  420. Neither of them.

  421. Israel

  422. is no better

  423. than Egypt.

  424. Christian

  425. is no better

  426. than non-Christian.

  427. No matter

  428. our race,

  429. our ethnicity,

  430. our social standing,

  431. our morals,

  432. our beliefs,

  433. our doctrine,

  434. our religion,

  435. if we are not

  436. covered

  437. under the blood

  438. of the Lamb,

  439. taking refuge

  440. under the blood

  441. of the Lamb,

  442. we are lost.

  443. The destroyer

  444. will come

  445. and we will die.

  446. And so the second

  447. principle is that

  448. our only hope,

  449. only hope for Israel,

  450. the only hope for Egypt,

  451. the only hope for anyone

  452. is a substitute.

  453. Every single

  454. house

  455. in Egypt

  456. on that night

  457. there was either

  458. a dead son

  459. or a dead lamb.

  460. It was one

  461. or the other.

  462. Either a dead son

  463. or a dead lamb.

  464. The lamb

  465. got what the son

  466. deserved.

  467. The lamb got,

  468. in fact,

  469. what the family

  470. deserved.

  471. The lamb got

  472. what we deserve.

  473. Either the lamb

  474. pays the debt

  475. or the son

  476. pays the debt

  477. for the family.

  478. It's one

  479. or the other.

  480. The lamb's blood

  481. is not simply

  482. marking the doorpost,

  483. not simply marking,

  484. putting a cross

  485. on top of the house

  486. so that,

  487. you know,

  488. identifying it

  489. as an Israelite family.

  490. The blood

  491. is a sign

  492. that a sacrifice

  493. has been made,

  494. a substitute

  495. has been offered.

  496. So just think about it

  497. for a moment.

  498. Just imagine.

  499. Imagine if there

  500. is a God

  501. and I owe

  502. this God

  503. a debt

  504. and the value

  505. of that debt

  506. is my life

  507. for not living

  508. up to his standard.

  509. Is it possible,

  510. is it at all

  511. possible

  512. that a substitute

  513. could still stand in

  514. and pay that debt

  515. for me?

  516. You see,

  517. as incredible

  518. as this deliverance

  519. is for the Israelites

  520. in Exodus 11 and 12,

  521. it points

  522. to something

  523. much deeper.

  524. It has to point

  525. to something

  526. of a greater deliverance,

  527. a more significant

  528. deliverance.

  529. You see,

  530. their deliverance

  531. here in Egypt

  532. was a socio-political

  533. deliverance

  534. for one people

  535. at one point

  536. in history.

  537. That's it.

  538. That's it.

  539. As important

  540. as the lamb

  541. was on the Passover night,

  542. surely that event

  543. points to something

  544. greater,

  545. a need

  546. for something

  547. bigger,

  548. a more significant

  549. one.

  550. The sacrifice

  551. of the Passover lamb

  552. means that there

  553. is unfinished

  554. business.

  555. How do I know

  556. that?

  557. Who actually

  558. thinks

  559. that Sean

  560. the sheep

  561. is a fair exchange

  562. for human life?

  563. Who actually

  564. thinks that?

  565. How do I know

  566. that Israel

  567. didn't think

  568. it as well?

  569. Because God

  570. says every

  571. single year

  572. you must

  573. celebrate

  574. this Passover

  575. meal.

  576. You must

  577. remember

  578. every single

  579. year

  580. and replay

  581. it and

  582. replay it

  583. and replay

  584. it.

  585. Remember the

  586. liberation

  587. that you

  588. had from Egypt

  589. until

  590. until a

  591. greater

  592. substitution

  593. comes,

  594. a greater

  595. liberation

  596. comes.

  597. And so we

  598. fast forward

  599. to scene

  600. three

  601. in the

  602. drama

  603. of the

  604. lamb.

  605. And over

  606. 1,000 years

  607. later

  608. this

  609. unfinished

  610. business

  611. was still

  612. waiting

  613. to be

  614. resolved

  615. and then

  616. John

  617. the

  618. Baptist

  619. sees

  620. Jesus

  621. Christ

  622. walking

  623. towards

  624. him

  625. and

  626. he

  627. says

  628. look

  629. look

  630. the

  631. lamb

  632. of God

  633. who

  634. takes

  635. away

  636. the

  637. sin

  638. of

  639. the

  640. world.

  641. And so

  642. we push

  643. fast forward

  644. again

  645. to the

  646. night

  647. that Jesus

  648. was

  649. betrayed

  650. to death

  651. and Jesus

  652. Christ

  653. is celebrating

  654. the Passover

  655. meal

  656. with his

  657. disciples

  658. and Jesus

  659. takes the

  660. traditional

  661. place of

  662. the presider

  663. of the

  664. meal

  665. who

  666. explains

  667. the meaning

  668. of the

  669. meal

  670. and there

  671. are two

  672. shocks

  673. in this

  674. moment

  675. as Jesus

  676. explains

  677. the meaning

  678. of the

  679. meal.

  680. The first

  681. is

  682. when he

  683. picks up

  684. the bread

  685. he doesn't

  686. say

  687. what is

  688. normally

  689. said

  690. at the

  691. Passover

  692. this

  693. is

  694. the

  695. bread

  696. of

  697. our

  698. suffering.

  699. Our

  700. ancestors

  701. suffered

  702. so that

  703. we could

  704. be

  705. liberated

  706. from

  707. slavery

  708. in

  709. Egypt.

  710. Instead

  711. he

  712. picks up

  713. the bread

  714. and he

  715. says

  716. this

  717. is

  718. my

  719. body

  720. broken

  721. for

  722. you.

  723. This

  724. is

  725. my

  726. suffering

  727. for

  728. you.

  729. I

  730. am

  731. going

  732. to

  733. suffer

  734. for

  735. your

  736. freedom

  737. from

  738. sin

  739. and

  740. death.

  741. And

  742. the

  743. second

  744. shock

  745. for

  746. them

  747. as

  748. they

  749. sit

  750. at

  751. the

  752. Passover

  753. meal

  754. is

  755. the

  756. bread

  757. is

  758. there

  759. the

  760. four

  761. cups

  762. of

  763. wine

  764. are

  765. there

  766. where's

  767. the

  768. lamb

  769. anyone

  770. seen

  771. the

  772. lamb

  773. there's

  774. a

  775. lamb

  776. out

  777. the

  778. back

  779. somewhere

  780. has

  781. anyone

  782. seen

  783. the

  784. lamb

  785. where

  786. is

  787. the

  788. lamb

  789. none

  790. of

  791. the

  792. gospels

  793. refer

  794. to

  795. any

  796. form

  797. of

  798. lamb

  799. at

  800. the

  801. Passover

  802. meal

  803. because

  804. the

  805. lamb

  806. was

  807. not

  808. on

  809. the

  810. table

  811. the

  812. lamb

  813. was

  814. at

  815. the

  816. table

  817. Jesus

  818. is

  819. the

  820. lamb

  821. his

  822. death

  823. as

  824. the

  825. sacrificial

  826. lamb

  827. is

  828. the

  829. central

  830. event

  831. in

  832. which

  833. all

  834. of

  835. God's

  836. relationship

  837. to

  838. the

  839. world

  840. has

  841. in

  842. fact

  843. been

  844. moving

  845. that

  846. night

  847. Jesus

  848. was

  849. going

  850. to

  851. remove

  852. the

  853. debt

  854. that

  855. hangs

  856. over

  857. every

  858. person

  859. and

  860. every

  861. family

  862. he

  863. was

  864. covering

  865. it

  866. with

  867. his

  868. blood

  869. Jesus

  870. is

  871. the

  872. substitute

  873. lamb

  874. of

  875. God

  876. he

  877. paid

  878. the

  879. price

  880. for

  881. our

  882. debt

  883. and

  884. he

  885. liberated

  886. us

  887. from

  888. slavery

  889. to

  890. sin

  891. and

  892. death

  893. human

  894. life

  895. for

  896. human

  897. life

  898. and

  899. so

  900. we

  901. fast

  902. forward

  903. to

  904. the

  905. final

  906. scene

  907. of

  908. the

  909. drama

  910. of

  911. the

  912. lamb

  913. this

  914. one

  915. is in

  916. the

  917. book

  918. of

  919. revelation

  920. where

  921. the

  922. slain

  923. lamb

  924. is

  925. now

  926. sitting

  927. Jesus

  928. Christ

  929. sitting

  930. on

  931. the

  932. throne

  933. of

  934. the

  935. universe

  936. victor

  937. over

  938. sin

  939. and

  940. death

  941. and

  942. the

  943. judge

  944. of

  945. all

  946. humanity

  947. and

  948. the

  949. one

  950. who

  951. offers

  952. eternal

  953. life

  954. and

  955. salvation

  956. and

  957. he's

  958. gathered

  959. people

  960. those

  961. who

  962. have

  963. come

  964. and

  965. found

  966. refuge

  967. under

  968. the

  969. blood

  970. of

  971. the

  972. lamb

  973. and

  974. now

  975. sprinkled

  976. with

  977. his

  978. blood

  979. around

  980. his

  981. throne

  982. worshipping

  983. his

  984. praises

  985. forever

  986. and

  987. ever

  988. and

  989. ever

  990. in

  991. liberation

  992. and

  993. freedom

  994. and

  995. perfection

  996. he is

  997. worshipped

  998. and served

  999. by all

  1000. creation

  1001. as the

  1002. gracious

  1003. king

  1004. over

  1005. all

  1006. creation

  1007. and

  1008. so

  1009. thirdly

  1010. with

  1011. John

  1012. the

  1013. Baptist

  1014. there's

  1015. a call

  1016. here

  1017. to

  1018. look

  1019. look

  1020. the

  1021. lamb

  1022. of

  1023. God

  1024. who

  1025. takes

  1026. away

  1027. the

  1028. sin

  1029. of

  1030. the

  1031. world

  1032. John

  1033. got

  1034. it

  1035. in

  1036. that

  1037. moment

  1038. he

  1039. saw

  1040. it

  1041. in

  1042. that

  1043. moment

  1044. he

  1045. got

  1046. that

  1047. the

  1048. first

  1049. born

  1050. of

  1051. Israel

  1052. were

  1053. not

  1054. saved

  1055. throughout

  1056. history

  1057. by a

  1058. woolly

  1059. animal

  1060. the first

  1061. born of

  1062. Israel

  1063. was saved

  1064. because

  1065. God gave

  1066. up his

  1067. one and

  1068. only son

  1069. that's what

  1070. Abraham and

  1071. Isaac was

  1072. pointing to

  1073. God

  1074. was going

  1075. to

  1076. walk

  1077. as

  1078. Abraham

  1079. walked

  1080. Isaac

  1081. up the

  1082. mountain

  1083. carrying

  1084. the

  1085. wood

  1086. so

  1087. God

  1088. was

  1089. going

  1090. to

  1091. walk

  1092. up

  1093. the

  1094. mountain

  1095. with

  1096. his

  1097. son

  1098. and

  1099. lay

  1100. the

  1101. wood

  1102. on

  1103. him

  1104. for

  1105. our

  1106. sakes

  1107. God

  1108. would

  1109. not

  1110. say

  1111. stop

  1112. in

  1113. that

  1114. moment

  1115. as

  1116. Jesus

  1117. is

  1118. crucified

  1119. on

  1120. the

  1121. mountaintop

  1122. outside

  1123. of

  1124. Jerusalem

  1125. the

  1126. only

  1127. way

  1128. Abraham's

  1129. beloved

  1130. son

  1131. didn't

  1132. have

  1133. to

  1134. die

  1135. was

  1136. because

  1137. God's

  1138. beloved

  1139. son

  1140. did

  1141. so

  1142. when

  1143. John

  1144. says

  1145. look

  1146. the

  1147. lamb

  1148. of

  1149. God

  1150. who

  1151. takes

  1152. away

  1153. the

  1154. sin

  1155. of

  1156. the

  1157. world

  1158. he

  1159. isn't

  1160. saying

  1161. to

  1162. the

  1163. crowd

  1164. hey

  1165. hey

  1166. hey

  1167. look

  1168. there's

  1169. Jesus

  1170. the

  1171. lamb

  1172. of

  1173. God

  1174. there he

  1175. is

  1176. this

  1177. is

  1178. not

  1179. a

  1180. where's

  1181. wally

  1182. moment

  1183. can

  1184. you

  1185. find

  1186. him

  1187. there

  1188. he

  1189. is

  1190. it's

  1191. not

  1192. one

  1193. of

  1194. those

  1195. it

  1196. manatee

  1197. to

  1198. your

  1199. saviour

  1200. behold

  1201. him

  1202. notice

  1203. him

  1204. think

  1205. about

  1206. him

  1207. dwell

  1208. on

  1209. him

  1210. hear

  1211. him

  1212. grasp

  1213. him

  1214. respond

  1215. to

  1216. him

  1217. find

  1218. refuge

  1219. in

  1220. him

  1221. and

  1222. only

  1223. him

  1224. there

  1225. is a

  1226. debt

  1227. against

  1228. God

  1229. that

  1230. must

  1231. be

  1232. paid

  1233. and

  1234. Jesus

  1235. died

  1236. to

  1237. pay

  1238. that

  1239. debt

  1240. as

  1241. your

  1242. substitute

  1243. as

  1244. my

  1245. substitute

  1246. it's

  1247. either

  1248. you

  1249. or

  1250. it's

  1251. him

  1252. either

  1253. you

  1254. pay

  1255. it

  1256. I

  1257. pay

  1258. it

  1259. or

  1260. he

  1261. pays

  1262. it

  1263. for

  1264. us

  1265. and

  1266. Jesus

  1267. calls

  1268. us

  1269. to

  1270. come

  1271. to

  1272. him

  1273. and

  1274. put

  1275. our

  1276. trust

  1277. in

  1278. him

  1279. to

  1280. find

  1281. refuge

  1282. from

  1283. destruction

  1284. in

  1285. him

  1286. find

  1287. eternal

  1288. freedom

  1289. in

  1290. him

  1291. that's

  1292. why

  1293. I've

  1294. got to

  1295. say

  1296. again

  1297. and

  1298. again

  1299. that

  1300. statement

  1301. which

  1302. is

  1303. on

  1304. the

  1305. wall

  1306. behind

  1307. me

  1308. up

  1309. here

  1310. it's

  1311. why

  1312. we

  1313. exist

  1314. as

  1315. a

  1316. church

  1317. we

  1318. exist

  1319. to

  1320. treasure

  1321. Jesus

  1322. to

  1323. make

  1324. much

  1325. of

  1326. Jesus

  1327. to

  1328. make

  1329. him

  1330. the

  1331. main

  1332. thing

  1333. for

  1377. Christ

  1378. what

  1379. I

  1402. liberation

  1403. and

  1404. freedom

  1405. that

  1406. we

  1407. have

  1408. in

  1409. Jesus

  1410. to

  1411. grasp

  1412. him

  1413. more

  1432. to

  1433. us

  1434. your

  1435. personal

  1436. devotional

  1437. life

  1443. not a

  1444. drudgery

  1445. it's

  1446. not a

  1447. rule

  1448. it's

  1449. not a

  1450. regulation

  1451. it's

  1452. a joy

  1453. as

  1454. you

  1455. grasp

  1456. Jesus

  1457. more

  1458. and

  1459. more

  1460. and

  1464. brings

  1465. brought

  1466. to

  1467. others

  1468. you

  1469. see

  1470. when

  1471. we

  1486. changes

  1487. us

  1488. coming

  1489. to

  1490. Jesus

  1491. means

  1492. we

  1493. also

  1494. grasp

  1495. hold

  1496. of

  1497. the

  1498. reality

  1499. the

  1500. very

  1501. fundamental

  1502. reality

  1503. that

  1504. we

  1506. no

  1507. different

  1508. than

  1509. anyone

  1510. else

  1511. we're

  1512. not

  1513. better

  1514. than

  1515. anyone

  1516. else

  1517. Israel

  1518. and

  1519. Egypt

  1520. all

  1521. in

  1522. the

  1523. same

  1524. boat

  1525. all

  1526. of

  1527. us

  1529. a

  1530. debt

  1531. hanging

  1532. over

  1533. us

  1534. which

  1538. for

  1539. every

  1540. single

  1541. one

  1542. of

  1543. us

  1544. and

  1546. changes

  1547. your

  1548. view

  1549. of

  1550. other

  1551. people

  1552. the

  1553. truth

  1554. of

  1555. Jesus

  1556. Christ

  1557. is a

  1558. truth

  1559. that

  1560. does

  1561. not

  1562. lead

  1563. to

  1564. oppression

  1565. of

  1566. others

  1567. it

  1568. does

  1569. not

  1570. lead

  1571. to

  1572. slavery

  1573. of

  1574. others

  1575. it

  1576. leads

  1577. to

  1578. serving

  1579. of

  1580. others

  1581. sacrificing

  1582. for

  1583. others

  1584. this

  1585. God

  1586. is a

  1587. God

  1588. of

  1589. extraordinary

  1590. grace

  1591. and it

  1592. transforms

  1593. his

  1594. people

  1595. into

  1596. people

  1597. of

  1598. grace

  1599. and

  1600. service

  1601. and

  1602. radical

  1603. generosity

  1604. in
