  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. My name is James.

  3. Nice to see you all today.

  4. If I was to ask you to picture home in your mind,

  5. what would you imagine?

  6. Do that for me.

  7. What does home look like?

  8. Is it noisy people around a dinner table?

  9. Is it time talking over food and talking over tea and coffee?

  10. Is it the warm embrace of a loved one?

  11. Is it being with the people you know and love,

  12. who know and love you and you know and love them?

  13. Is it being in the place where you feel comforted and supported and cared for?

  14. Now, this might be a really loving picture for some of us.

  15. This might be something that happens quite often

  16. that we actually need to be more thankful to God for.

  17. But for others, that kind of picture of home

  18. is almost impossible to achieve.

  19. A family might be overseas or in another state

  20. and with COVID and lockdowns,

  21. to see family is incredibly difficult.

  22. Maybe we've lost family members

  23. or maybe we have broken relationship with our family.

  24. This picture of home might actually be just cold

  25. and lonely and difficult.

  26. You may long for home because you've moved around so much

  27. that you just don't know where home is.

  28. Maybe you live far away from your family

  29. and long to live near them.

  30. You may long for family that you'd want to be near.

  31. Because some people live with a longing for a home

  32. in which they feel safe and loved.

  33. We all have a longing for home inside of us.

  34. To be known and loved, to have deep relationships.

  35. And we can do a lot of things to try and get that image

  36. or to keep that image safe.

  37. Each of us have a longing for home inside of us.

  38. And this is only found

  39. when we get to the home that we were made for.

  40. We are in a series at the moment,

  41. going through the book of Exodus,

  42. called Ordinary People, Extraordinary God.

  43. And we've seen so far in this series

  44. that God has taken a people,

  45. taken them out of Egypt,

  46. saved them out of Egypt with plagues,

  47. with a miracle at the Red Sea,

  48. parting the sea so they could get through it.

  49. He's taken the people to Mount Sinai.

  50. God has made a covenant,

  51. a long-lasting relationship with his people.

  52. He's given them laws,

  53. and now God is going to make a home with these people.

  54. The challenge for us will be today

  55. is to think about where our home is.

  56. Because God offers us his home,

  57. a place of love and safety and comfort.

  58. And the question will be,

  59. will we journey to that home?

  60. So as we get into Exodus 25

  61. and a couple of chapters after that,

  62. let me pray for us.

  63. Heavenly Father,

  64. as we look at this picture of home today,

  65. help us to long for the home

  66. you are preparing for us, Lord.

  67. Amen.

  68. Let's see two points today.

  69. First of all, we're going to see the map

  70. that points to home,

  71. and then how we journey to this home.

  72. You can be following along in the St. Paul's app.

  73. Let me encourage you to be taking notes there on paper.

  74. Write them on your hand and up your arm if you need to.

  75. First of all, Exodus 25 from verse 8.

  76. Then have them make a sanctuary for me,

  77. and I will dwell among them.

  78. Now, this is actually quite amazing.

  79. The God of the universe,

  80. the God who is everywhere,

  81. knows everything,

  82. knows the beat of every single heart,

  83. who made the smallest ant

  84. and made one of my favorite creatures,

  85. the giant sea squid.

  86. This wonderful God

  87. is going to make his home

  88. with a group of people.

  89. And this is reminiscent of a marriage relationship.

  90. In the last couple of weeks,

  91. we've seen God take his people to Mount Sinai

  92. and make a covenant with them,

  93. make a relationship,

  94. just like a marriage.

  95. And now he's moving in with them.

  96. He's going to be with them wherever they are.

  97. And God instructs them to build this tent,

  98. a tabernacle,

  99. so he can travel with them.

  100. This is the first flat pack,

  101. IKEA-style building.

  102. It's designed to be set up,

  103. packed down,

  104. set up as they move around.

  105. And to understand this fully,

  106. we need to go back to the Garden of Eden.

  107. In the Garden of Eden,

  108. God placed man and woman in the garden,

  109. in the first home.

  110. It was a place of provision and safety and rest,

  111. a place where God was with them in their home

  112. and they were known and loved.

  113. But the humans,

  114. we rejected this home and got exiled.

  115. And now as we see that the tabernacle get built,

  116. it is like a map showing the way back to that home.

  117. And so it's full of pictures and images and Easter eggs

  118. pointing back to the Garden of Eden,

  119. leading us to the home.

  120. And so God lists,

  121. we'll go through a couple of these

  122. to show it how it points back

  123. and then points forward.

  124. Firstly,

  125. there's a list of precious stones

  126. that are required

  127. for the building of the tabernacle.

  128. And the list starts with gold

  129. and ends in onyx.

  130. It's very similar in Genesis

  131. with the description of the earth.

  132. It had good gold

  133. and it had onyx.

  134. In chapter 25,

  135. verse 31 to 39,

  136. it describes the construction of the lampstand.

  137. It has buds and blossoms.

  138. This lampstand was designed to look like a tree.

  139. It's an echo of the tree of life

  140. that was found in the Garden of Eden.

  141. When God made the world in Genesis,

  142. he repeats a phrase,

  143. there's a repeated phrase,

  144. comes up seven times.

  145. God said,

  146. let there be light

  147. or let there be something.

  148. It's repeated seven times.

  149. And now here in Exodus,

  150. there's another phrase

  151. repeated seven times.

  152. The Lord said to Moses,

  153. build this.

  154. It's the same imagery.

  155. The building of the tabernacle

  156. is like the building

  157. of our first home

  158. in the Garden of Eden.

  159. And the biggest,

  160. the most important part of this

  161. is that this is where God would dwell.

  162. God was there in the Garden of Eden.

  163. God is going to make his home

  164. here in the tabernacle.

  165. This tabernacle is built

  166. with rings and poles

  167. so it could be carried around

  168. and moved with Israel

  169. and then rebuilt

  170. and packed down.

  171. So,

  172. this tabernacle

  173. is a new home

  174. for God with his people.

  175. It points back to

  176. humanity's first home,

  177. but it also gives us

  178. a road map

  179. to our final home.

  180. And there's

  181. some pieces of furniture

  182. that we're going to see here.

  183. The first three

  184. point

  185. to what makes this

  186. a really great home.

  187. So,

  188. have a look with me.

  189. We're going to have a look

  190. at furniture.

  191. I'm not sure if you've,

  192. you know,

  193. come to church thinking,

  194. I really need to spend some time

  195. thinking about furniture.

  196. That's,

  197. that's what we've got here

  198. in Exodus 25

  199. and it actually gives us

  200. a wonderful picture of home.

  201. So,

  202. let's have a look at this.

  203. First,

  204. we see the ark

  205. in chapter 25

  206. where we see

  207. that we live under God's reign.

  208. From verse 10,

  209. have them make an ark

  210. of acacia wood

  211. two and a half cubits long,

  212. a cubit and a half wide

  213. and a cubit and a half high.

  214. Overlay it with gold,

  215. pure gold,

  216. both inside and out

  217. and make a gold

  218. moulding around it.

  219. The picture of this ark here,

  220. I don't know if you've seen

  221. Indiana Jones

  222. and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

  223. recently,

  224. I know I have.

  225. The picture of the ark here

  226. is,

  227. it has the same size

  228. and dimensions

  229. as an ancient king's

  230. footstool.

  231. What would happen is,

  232. ancient kings

  233. would have their throne,

  234. they would have their throne

  235. and they would go

  236. and sit on their throne

  237. when they were

  238. bringing judgments.

  239. You know,

  240. it was the day

  241. for court cases

  242. to come before them,

  243. the king would make judgments

  244. on the world

  245. and so they would have a throne

  246. and in front of the throne

  247. they would have a footstool.

  248. Okay?

  249. So the footstool

  250. and the throne

  251. go together

  252. as the place of judgment

  253. and the picture of the ark here

  254. is that it is

  255. that very footstool.

  256. Israel doesn't have

  257. a human king.

  258. Israel has a theocracy,

  259. a God king

  260. and God is in the heavens,

  261. seated in the heavens

  262. and here

  263. with the people

  264. is his footstool.

  265. Sitting in the heavens

  266. his feet are on the earth

  267. and this is where he rules.

  268. God put something

  269. in his footstool.

  270. Verse 16.

  271. Then put in the ark

  272. the tablets of the covenant law

  273. which I will give you.

  274. God is going to rule his people

  275. through the Ten Commandments

  276. and that symbolizes

  277. the entire law.

  278. The ark is the place

  279. that God will rule

  280. over his people.

  281. At the Garden of Eden

  282. that was when Adam and Eve

  283. chose to reject God

  284. and get exiled

  285. from their home

  286. but here

  287. God is going to rule

  288. directly over his people

  289. again.

  290. And so the picture

  291. at this point is

  292. it's a golden

  293. empty box

  294. that's going to have

  295. the tablets in it.

  296. I love the amount of gold

  297. that gets used here.

  298. It's just a wonderful

  299. amount of gold

  300. showing how valuable

  301. each of these pieces are

  302. because it points back

  303. to the awesome God

  304. that we have.

  305. But we've got

  306. a golden box

  307. and God also describes

  308. the cover

  309. that's made for it.

  310. It's called

  311. an atonement cover.

  312. It's the lid

  313. that goes on the box

  314. on top of the stone tablets.

  315. Now this piece of furniture

  316. just like the rest

  317. has really rich

  318. symbolic imagery.

  319. It's not just a lid.

  320. It's not just a box

  321. needs a lid.

  322. What kind of hinge

  323. does it have?

  324. It's not that kind of thing.

  325. It's really significant

  326. that the stone tablets

  327. that have the law

  328. that they are being covered

  329. because the penalty

  330. of breaking the law

  331. is death.

  332. The penalty

  333. that comes from

  334. disobeying God

  335. is being covered.

  336. It is if

  337. the phrase in English

  338. it is if

  339. God is

  340. covering the cost

  341. of his people's sin.

  342. And so at the seat

  343. of his power

  344. where his footstool

  345. is on earth

  346. God is going to

  347. rule over his people

  348. and bring justice

  349. but also

  350. with the atonement cover

  351. he brings

  352. mercy.

  353. Even at this stage

  354. God's people need

  355. their sins

  356. covered over.

  357. Not covered up

  358. but covered over.

  359. And God is indicating

  360. that there is going

  361. to be someone

  362. who will cover

  363. the cost

  364. of the people's sin.

  365. That's the first

  366. piece of furniture

  367. for us.

  368. The second piece

  369. of furniture

  370. is a table

  371. where there will be food

  372. because home

  373. is where we eat

  374. food with God.

  375. I can't think

  376. of a person's house

  377. that I've ever been into

  378. that didn't have

  379. a dining table.

  380. I think if I came

  381. into every one

  382. of your houses

  383. I would find

  384. a dining table.

  385. Would this be correct?

  386. Does anybody

  387. not have a dining table?

  388. You don't have

  389. a dining table?

  390. You don't have

  391. a dining table?

  392. It's too small?

  393. Okay.

  394. My heart breaks

  395. for you.

  396. We'll get you

  397. in a milk crate

  398. and a tiny

  399. dining table.

  400. So what does this

  401. say about our houses?

  402. You know

  403. I don't want to

  404. pick on one person

  405. in particular.

  406. Maybe it says

  407. I don't want

  408. to have fellowship.

  409. I know of

  410. no I'm not saying

  411. that about you at all.

  412. A minister I used

  413. to work with

  414. he had five kids

  415. large family

  416. that had a large

  417. dining table.

  418. They got rid of that.

  419. I actually have

  420. that dining table now

  421. and they got a new

  422. dining table

  423. so they could have

  424. lots of people

  425. at their house

  426. because they wanted

  427. to feast with people.

  428. They wanted to

  429. open their home.

  430. They wanted to do

  431. food with other people

  432. because that is what

  433. home so often is.

  434. Home and dining table

  435. are so central

  436. to family

  437. and it's true

  438. of God's home here.

  439. A table is made

  440. verse 23

  441. make a table

  442. of acacia wood

  443. two cubits long

  444. a cubit wide

  445. and a cubit

  446. and a half high

  447. and on this table

  448. a meal gets served.

  449. Verse 30

  450. put the bread

  451. of the presence

  452. on this table

  453. to be before me

  454. at all times.

  455. Now the bread

  456. isn't here

  457. because God gets hungry.

  458. God doesn't need it.

  459. In Leviticus

  460. we are told

  461. that the bread

  462. of the presence

  463. was 12 loaves

  464. of bread.

  465. Two rows of six.

  466. 12 being a very

  467. symbolic number

  468. for Israel

  469. because there was

  470. 12 tribes.

  471. So this is a picture

  472. of all of the people

  473. of Israel

  474. being able to eat

  475. food with God.

  476. In God's home

  477. where he rules

  478. where he shows

  479. justice and mercy

  480. he's also got food

  481. for his people.

  482. He has a home

  483. a family for them.

  484. It's a wonderful picture

  485. of a meal

  486. in the presence

  487. of God

  488. because this

  489. this is the point

  490. of knowing Jesus.

  491. This is the point

  492. of Christianity.

  493. We don't become

  494. Christians just

  495. to not go to hell

  496. or just to

  497. live forever.

  498. The joy

  499. of being a Christian

  500. is that we get

  501. invited to the

  502. best table

  503. in town.

  504. We get to

  505. share a meal

  506. with God himself.

  507. It's what we long

  508. for.

  509. The third piece

  510. of furniture

  511. here is a lampstand.

  512. It was designed

  513. to look like

  514. the tree of life

  515. but it also

  516. provides light.

  517. It's this really

  518. warm,

  519. lovely image

  520. that it's a

  521. brightly lit,

  522. warm,

  523. welcoming home

  524. to have a meal

  525. with God.

  526. It is a lamp.

  527. It's a place

  528. of light

  529. and life.

  530. Once this

  531. tabernacle

  532. is built,

  533. the table,

  534. the lampstand,

  535. to be in it.

  536. God's home

  537. is open

  538. for mercy

  539. at the ark

  540. and for fellowship

  541. with him,

  542. with the table,

  543. with the light.

  544. It's a wonderful

  545. picture

  546. of home.

  547. And these pieces

  548. of furniture

  549. which might just

  550. look like really

  551. expensive pieces

  552. of furniture

  553. but they are

  554. actually all

  555. signposts

  556. to our home.

  557. They reflect

  558. where our home

  559. was in the garden

  560. and they show

  561. us the way

  562. back

  563. because they

  564. all point

  565. to Jesus.

  566. John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  567. 1,

  568. the word

  569. became flesh

  570. and made

  571. his dwelling

  572. among us.

  573. Jesus came

  574. and dwelt

  575. with us.

  576. Dwelt

  577. is the same

  578. word as

  579. tabernacle.

  580. So John

  581. literally says

  582. Jesus came

  583. and tabernacled.

  584. Jesus came

  585. camping

  586. with us.

  587. He is our

  588. home

  589. and he

  590. is the

  591. way

  592. home.

  593. God

  594. made

  595. his home

  596. among us

  597. in the

  598. person of

  599. Jesus

  600. so he

  601. could bring

  602. us home.

  603. If the

  604. ark is

  605. where God

  606. reached down

  607. and touched

  608. the earth,

  609. Jesus is

  610. the full

  611. embodiment

  612. of that.

  613. The ark

  614. was the

  615. place that

  616. we come

  617. under God's

  618. rule.

  619. Jesus

  620. is the

  621. true ark

  622. because he

  623. is the

  624. place,

  625. he is the

  626. king who

  627. rules right

  628. now.

  629. Jesus

  630. is the

  631. atonement

  632. cover over

  633. the stone

  634. tablets.

  635. He is

  636. that cover

  637. because in

  638. his death

  639. he says

  640. to us,

  641. I will

  642. cover your

  643. sin.

  644. Jesus

  645. is the

  646. true bread.

  647. He said

  648. in John

  649. 6 that

  650. I am

  651. the bread

  652. of life.

  653. Whoever

  654. comes to

  655. me will

  656. never be

  657. hungry.

  658. He is

  659. the bread

  660. who we

  661. celebrate

  662. in the

  663. Lord's

  664. Supper

  665. that we

  666. get to

  667. come into

  668. God's

  669. presence

  670. because of

  671. Jesus.

  672. He is

  673. the true

  674. lamp.

  675. Jesus

  676. again said

  677. in John

  678. 8,

  679. I am

  680. the light

  681. of the

  682. world.

  683. He is

  684. the light

  685. so we

  686. can see

  687. the path

  688. forward.

  689. We can

  690. see our

  691. way to

  692. God

  693. because

  694. Jesus

  695. has opened

  696. our eyes.

  697. We all

  698. have a

  699. longing for

  700. home and

  701. that is

  702. met for

  703. us in

  704. Jesus.

  705. He is

  706. our true

  707. home.

  708. Every

  709. longing we

  710. have for

  711. home is

  712. met in

  713. him.

  714. All

  715. these

  716. sign

  717. posts of

  718. the

  719. furniture

  720. and the

  721. tabernacle

  722. are pointing

  723. to

  724. Jesus.

  725. One

  726. of the

  727. early

  728. church

  729. fathers,

  730. Augustine,

  731. said,

  732. our hearts

  733. are restless

  734. until they

  735. find their

  736. rest in

  737. him.

  738. This

  739. picture is

  740. of the

  741. tabernacle.

  742. It's a

  743. picture of

  744. home.

  745. But it

  746. is not

  747. home.

  748. It was a

  749. map.

  750. It's a

  751. map and a

  752. promise to

  753. a home.

  754. So our

  755. second point

  756. is that

  757. we need

  758. to journey

  759. to this

  760. home.

  761. Because

  762. unfortunately

  763. we are

  764. blocked

  765. from enjoying

  766. home with

  767. God because

  768. of our

  769. sin.

  770. And this

  771. is built

  772. into the

  773. furniture of

  774. the tabernacle

  775. as well.

  776. From

  777. chapter 26,

  778. go and have

  779. a look at

  780. chapter 26

  781. of Exodus

  782. with me.

  783. Verse 31.

  784. At first

  785. glance we

  786. could think

  787. this sounds

  788. lovely.

  789. Purples and

  790. blue, royal

  791. colours, cherubim,

  792. angels.

  793. This is a

  794. delightful image

  795. for God's

  796. tabernacle.

  797. But we of

  798. course need to

  799. remind ourselves

  800. this is another

  801. one of those

  802. Easter egg

  803. images that

  804. takes us

  805. back to

  806. Genesis.

  807. In the

  808. exile, when

  809. God exiled

  810. us from

  811. our home,

  812. when he

  813. kicked us

  814. out of

  815. the garden

  816. of Eden,

  817. he put a

  818. cherubim

  819. blocking the

  820. way back

  821. into the

  822. garden with

  823. a flaming

  824. sword flashing

  825. back and

  826. forth so we

  827. couldn't get

  828. back in.

  829. Here again,

  830. God has

  831. placed a

  832. cherubim so

  833. that we

  834. can't enter

  835. in.

  836. The cherubim

  837. is still

  838. blocking the

  839. way back

  840. to God.

  841. Not only

  842. that, the

  843. last piece

  844. of furniture

  845. we'll look

  846. at today

  847. also points

  848. this out.

  849. It's an

  850. altar, described

  851. in chapter

  852. 27 from

  853. verse 1.

  854. Build an

  855. altar of

  856. acacia wood,

  857. three cubits

  858. high.

  859. It's to be

  860. square, five

  861. cubits long

  862. and five

  863. cubits wide.

  864. This is the

  865. largest of the

  866. pieces of

  867. furniture so

  868. far.

  869. The altar

  870. is here

  871. because it's

  872. the solution

  873. to getting

  874. back home.

  875. The altar

  876. is where

  877. the sacrifices

  878. were placed.

  879. It's where

  880. the way back

  881. to God

  882. is now

  883. because of

  884. the blood

  885. of a

  886. sacrifice.

  887. There is

  888. so much

  889. imagery

  890. represented

  891. here in

  892. this picture

  893. of God's

  894. home.

  895. God's home

  896. starts with

  897. a courtyard

  898. and as

  899. a Jewish

  900. person would

  901. come in

  902. they would

  903. have

  904. encountered

  905. the altar

  906. first.

  907. It dominated

  908. the way

  909. back home.

  910. It blocks

  911. the way

  912. into God's

  913. presence.

  914. It blocks

  915. it not just

  916. physically,

  917. not as a

  918. large piece

  919. of furniture

  920. but symbolically.

  921. We deserve

  922. to die

  923. for our

  924. sins.

  925. I deserve

  926. to be excluded

  927. from God's

  928. presence because

  929. I continue to

  930. rebel against

  931. him and reject

  932. him.

  933. But a

  934. sacrifice.

  935. An animal

  936. on that

  937. altar is

  938. placed and

  939. it dies.

  940. And this

  941. would have

  942. happened

  943. hundreds upon

  944. hundreds of

  945. times.

  946. But they

  947. are just

  948. pointers to

  949. God's

  950. solution to

  951. our sin.

  952. Ali is

  953. going to put

  954. an image on

  955. the screen

  956. in a moment.

  957. It's from

  958. the classic

  959. tale A

  960. Christmas

  961. Carol by

  962. Charles

  963. Dickens.

  964. There we

  965. go.

  966. Of a

  967. grumpy

  968. old man

  969. Scrooge

  970. who's

  971. visited

  972. by three

  973. different

  974. ghosts

  975. to

  976. reconsider

  977. his

  978. life's

  979. actions.

  980. And there's

  981. this one

  982. point in

  983. the story

  984. where he's

  985. on the

  986. outside

  987. and he's

  988. looking in

  989. to this

  990. family celebration.

  991. It's warm,

  992. there's joy,

  993. you can imagine

  994. a family meal

  995. in this kind

  996. of way,

  997. but Scrooge

  998. is on the

  999. outside because

  1000. of his life's

  1001. decisions.

  1002. This picture

  1003. is us

  1004. without

  1005. Jesus.

  1006. Standing on

  1007. the outside

  1008. of the

  1009. tabernacle

  1010. with this

  1011. wonderful

  1012. picture of

  1013. family and

  1014. home with

  1015. God.

  1016. The meal is

  1017. laid out,

  1018. there is

  1019. bright lights,

  1020. but we are

  1021. stuck on the

  1022. outside of

  1023. home with

  1024. God.

  1025. The altar

  1026. blocking the

  1027. way,

  1028. requiring

  1029. blood.

  1030. The curtain

  1031. preventing us

  1032. with relationship

  1033. with God,

  1034. stuck just

  1035. outside of

  1036. it,

  1037. so close

  1038. and yet

  1039. so far.

  1040. Thanks,

  1041. Allie.

  1042. Jesus would

  1043. change this.

  1044. On the

  1045. night before

  1046. Jesus died,

  1047. he said in

  1048. John 14,

  1049. my father's

  1050. house has

  1051. many rooms.

  1052. If that were

  1053. not so,

  1054. would I have

  1055. told you that

  1056. I'm going

  1057. there to

  1058. prepare a

  1059. place for

  1060. you?

  1061. Jesus was

  1062. going to

  1063. get home

  1064. ready for

  1065. us.

  1066. Jesus is

  1067. the sacrifice

  1068. on that

  1069. altar,

  1070. the sacrifice

  1071. to end

  1072. all

  1073. sacrifices.

  1074. And when

  1075. he's dying

  1076. on the

  1077. cross,

  1078. listen to

  1079. what happens

  1080. from Matthew

  1081. 27.

  1082. When Jesus

  1083. had cried

  1084. out again

  1085. in a loud

  1086. voice,

  1087. he gave

  1088. up his

  1089. spirit.

  1090. At that

  1091. moment,

  1092. the curtain

  1093. of the

  1094. temple was

  1095. torn in

  1096. two from

  1097. top to

  1098. bottom.

  1099. As Jesus

  1100. died,

  1101. the furniture

  1102. of the

  1103. tabernacle,

  1104. now the

  1105. temple in

  1106. this situation,

  1107. the furniture

  1108. is radically

  1109. changed.

  1110. God,

  1111. Jesus in

  1112. his death

  1113. throws to

  1114. one side

  1115. the altar.

  1116. He has

  1117. dealt with

  1118. that the

  1119. curtain is

  1120. torn open

  1121. and we

  1122. can now

  1123. get access

  1124. to God.

  1125. Home with

  1126. God is

  1127. now open.

  1128. If you

  1129. are far

  1130. from God,

  1131. longing for

  1132. him,

  1133. come home to

  1134. him today.

  1135. The light is

  1136. on,

  1137. God is

  1138. there,

  1139. the meal is

  1140. laid out.

  1141. God calls

  1142. us to come

  1143. home,

  1144. to fellowship

  1145. with him,

  1146. to eat with

  1147. him.

  1148. And if

  1149. you feel

  1150. far from

  1151. him,

  1152. don't let

  1153. the feelings

  1154. shout louder

  1155. than what

  1156. hangs above

  1157. the home.

  1158. It says,

  1159. welcome

  1160. home.

  1161. The

  1162. furniture,

  1163. the way

  1164. the tabernacle

  1165. was built

  1166. points to

  1167. our true

  1168. home with

  1169. God.

  1170. We all

  1171. have a

  1172. longing for

  1173. home inside

  1174. of us.

  1175. Even when

  1176. we are home,

  1177. surrounded by

  1178. people,

  1179. we can still

  1180. feel homesick.

  1181. homesick.

  1182. Why are we

  1183. still homesick?

  1184. Why can we

  1185. be longing

  1186. for something

  1187. when we have

  1188. everything?

  1189. What about

  1190. if I was to

  1191. chase the

  1192. ideal dream,

  1193. I'm going to

  1194. chase the

  1195. house,

  1196. and the

  1197. husband or

  1198. the wife,

  1199. and the

  1200. pet,

  1201. and the

  1202. children,

  1203. and the

  1204. fireplace,

  1205. and I've

  1206. got everything.

  1207. Why do I

  1208. still feel

  1209. like something

  1210. is missing?

  1211. There's still

  1212. a longing for

  1213. something else.

  1214. God has

  1215. placed a

  1216. longing for

  1217. home inside

  1218. all of us,

  1219. and that's

  1220. only satisfied

  1221. in our

  1222. heavenly home.

  1223. The

  1224. tabernacle

  1225. points to

  1226. it.

  1227. Jesus would

  1228. rip the

  1229. doors off

  1230. their hinges

  1231. so we

  1232. could get

  1233. into this

  1234. home.

  1235. Don't risk

  1236. chasing

  1237. anything else

  1238. this side

  1239. of that

  1240. home,

  1241. because this

  1242. side of

  1243. heaven,

  1244. we can't

  1245. be home.

  1246. We are

  1247. foreigners

  1248. in a distant

  1249. land,

  1250. all of us.

  1251. And so

  1252. when we

  1253. lift our

  1254. eyes to

  1255. our true

  1256. home in

  1257. heaven,

  1258. and long

  1259. for home,

  1260. we grow in

  1261. faith,

  1262. we grow in

  1263. trust with

  1264. God,

  1265. each step

  1266. of the way

  1267. when we

  1268. realise that

  1269. what we have

  1270. now is just

  1271. temporary,

  1272. what we'll

  1273. have with

  1274. God will be

  1275. permanent

  1276. forever.

  1277. I heard a

  1278. story about

  1279. Americans

  1280. living overseas,

  1281. and at

  1282. Thanksgiving time,

  1283. one of the

  1284. largest of

  1285. their celebrations,

  1286. they would

  1287. come together

  1288. and cook

  1289. the bird

  1290. that was

  1291. closest to

  1292. a turkey

  1293. to celebrate.

  1294. Now,

  1295. I don't

  1296. really understand

  1297. this,

  1298. I've never

  1299. had a turkey

  1300. that was

  1301. any good.

  1302. I had some

  1303. North Americans

  1304. this morning

  1305. say,

  1306. well,

  1307. you've never

  1308. had it

  1309. cooked right,

  1310. we'll cook

  1311. it right

  1312. for you.

  1313. Look,

  1314. I'll try

  1315. it.

  1316. Maybe that

  1317. sense of

  1318. home is

  1319. finding a

  1320. particular type

  1321. of food from

  1322. the region

  1323. where you

  1324. grew up in.

  1325. My

  1326. grandmother

  1327. used to cook

  1328. Yorkshire

  1329. puddings

  1330. with a

  1331. Sunday

  1332. roast

  1333. with gravy

  1334. and there's

  1335. just something

  1336. about that

  1337. meal that

  1338. calls to

  1339. home.

  1340. So I

  1341. love it

  1342. when my

  1343. wife makes

  1344. it,

  1345. it's

  1346. wonderful.

  1347. The reality

  1348. is that

  1349. for us,

  1350. we are

  1351. not home,

  1352. we are

  1353. exiles,

  1354. we are

  1355. foreigners

  1356. here.

  1357. And God

  1358. came camping,

  1359. he came

  1360. tabernacling

  1361. with us,

  1362. temporarily

  1363. pointing us

  1364. to home.

  1365. He camped

  1366. with us,

  1367. he was with

  1368. us in the

  1369. tabernacle,

  1370. he was

  1371. with us

  1372. in Jesus

  1373. and he

  1374. is calling

  1375. us home

  1376. because this

  1377. is not

  1378. our home.

  1379. This is

  1380. not final.

  1381. This is

  1382. just temporary

  1383. and we can

  1384. easily get

  1385. distracted

  1386. thinking that

  1387. the temporary

  1388. is the

  1389. permanent

  1390. but it

  1391. is not.

  1392. This is

  1393. just temporary.

  1394. Far better

  1395. to live

  1396. knowing

  1397. that what

  1398. we have

  1399. right now

  1400. is just

  1401. for a

  1402. season

  1403. but we

  1404. are expats,

  1405. we are

  1406. foreigners

  1407. waiting

  1408. to go

  1409. home.

  1410. And that's

  1411. what we

  1412. do when

  1413. we gather.

  1414. We celebrate

  1415. the God

  1416. that is

  1417. calling us

  1418. home.

  1419. We celebrate

  1420. that we

  1421. are not

  1422. home yet.

  1423. So let me

  1424. encourage you,

  1425. sign up

  1426. to have a

  1427. meal with

  1428. people next

  1429. week.

  1430. That we can

  1431. celebrate

  1432. with people

  1433. that God

  1434. is calling

  1435. us to

  1436. a home.

  1437. We can

  1438. do that

  1439. just like

  1440. the Americans

  1441. do with

  1442. Thanksgiving

  1443. but a far

  1444. better meal

  1445. because it's

  1446. anything other

  1447. than turkey.

  1448. Sign up

  1449. to be

  1450. in a

  1451. community

  1452. group,

  1453. to be

  1454. journeying

  1455. with brothers

  1456. and sisters

  1457. every week,

  1458. reminding

  1459. ourselves that

  1460. we are not

  1461. home here.

  1462. We are

  1463. together,

  1464. exiles in a

  1465. foreign land,

  1466. waiting until

  1467. we get home.

  1468. Let me pray

  1469. for us.

  1470. Heavenly

  1471. Father,

  1472. I thank you

  1473. that you

  1474. have come

  1475. and dwelt

  1476. with us,

  1477. first of all

  1478. in the

  1479. garden,

  1480. then in

  1481. the

  1482. tabernacle.

  1483. Lord,

  1484. thank you

  1485. so much

  1486. that you

  1487. were with

  1488. us when

  1489. Jesus came

  1490. and dwelt

  1491. with us.

  1492. Father,

  1493. I thank you

  1494. so much

  1495. that Jesus

  1496. has now

  1497. gone to

  1498. be with

  1499. you,

  1500. to rip

  1501. those doors

  1502. off the

  1503. hinges so

  1504. that we

  1505. can be

  1506. with you,

  1507. so that we

  1508. can enter

  1509. into your

  1510. presence,

  1511. that we

  1512. can have

  1513. home with

  1514. you.

  1515. Lord,

  1516. lift our

  1517. eyes to

  1518. that home.

  1519. Help us

  1520. to long

  1521. for that

  1522. home and

  1523. not for

  1524. the temporary

  1525. things of

  1526. this world,

  1527. Lord.

  1528. Pray this

  1529. in your

  1530. son's

  1531. name of

  1532. your

  1533. glory.

  1534. Amen.

  1535. Isn't it

  1536. wonderful we

  1537. have a
