  1. Some things in life just have a bigger impact on us.

  2. I've been a keen follower of the cricket for many years,

  3. and let me tell you, it has impacted many parts of my life.

  4. Not just watching or going to games, but financial decisions.

  5. Will I buy merchandise?

  6. I teach my kids the love of the game.

  7. And then there's the emotional rollercoaster of the highs of the wins and the joy,

  8. and then the depressing lows of the losses.

  9. Some decisions just have bigger impacts on our life.

  10. Decisions to get married, decisions to have kids, decisions where we live,

  11. who will be our friends, what career, what should I study?

  12. These things impact what we love, what we do with our time, and what we do with our money.

  13. But none of these compare to the impact on our lives of following Jesus.

  14. At least, nothing compares to what the impact of following Jesus should have on our lives.

  15. Following Jesus should impact the things that I love.

  16. It should shape what I spend my money on.

  17. It should wake me up to think about how I think about the world.

  18. It should impact my ethics.

  19. Following Jesus should impact all of my life.

  20. But I wonder if we can resist or fight God's influence.

  21. Today, we are continuing in the series, For All People.

  22. Throughout this series, in the book of Acts, the second half of the book of Acts,

  23. we've seen how God is for all people.

  24. He is for the slave and the free, the male and the female.

  25. He's for the Jew and the Gentile.

  26. God is for people all across the world, for all different types of people.

  27. And today, we see not just that God is for all people,

  28. but God is for all of their life.

  29. God wants to impact all of our lives.

  30. And the challenge for us today will be to see how God needs to continue to impact our lives.

  31. How God will continue to shape our lives so that we are more like him every day.

  32. Let me pray as we look at Acts 19.

  33. Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for your love for us, us who are far from you.

  34. And we ask that as we look at your word today, that you would help shape all of our lives.

  35. We ask this in your Son's name. Amen.

  36. Today, we're in Acts 19.

  37. Please have your Bibles open.

  38. You can be using the St. Paul's app with the three points in there today.

  39. The three points today that we will...

  40. Firstly, we're going to see that the Gospel impacts our belief.

  41. Before, we see that the Gospel impacts our control.

  42. And then finally, that the Gospel impacts our worship.

  43. Have the app open.

  44. Take some notes.

  45. Write them down.

  46. Have your Bibles open.

  47. And so we meet Paul in Ephesus.

  48. And Paul meets some disciples.

  49. But on closer inspection, it's not clear whose disciples they are.

  50. They had been baptised in the baptism of John, but they haven't heard of the Holy Spirit.

  51. They haven't heard of Jesus.

  52. I think it's likely that these are people who have been discipled by Apollos.

  53. John had been baptising people in the expectation of Jesus' coming.

  54. But for some reason, these men haven't heard about him.

  55. They only have a partial faith.

  56. They've only gotten part of the story.

  57. They've heard and loved the first part of the story from John,

  58. that there would be someone that would come, who would save them, who would deal with their sin.

  59. But they didn't have the sequel.

  60. They didn't yet have the better part of the story.

  61. They hadn't heard about Jesus yet.

  62. And so Paul clarifies this good news.

  63. Have a look with me.

  64. Acts chapter 19, verse 4.

    Acts 19:4

  65. John's baptism was a baptism of repentance.

  66. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.

  67. On hearing this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  68. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

  69. Paul carefully and lovingly corrected these disciples.

  70. He taught them about Jesus.

  71. The Holy Spirit has come upon them, and God has used Paul to correct their belief about God,

  72. so that they would know him better.

  73. So that they would know Jesus, who reveals God.

  74. And God works through their lives.

  75. For all Christians, he gives the Holy Spirit, and we see the outworking of the Holy Spirit in their life.

  76. This is a wonderful promise.

  77. A promise that, for Christians, God is with us.

  78. If you're not a Christian, if you're still unsure, this is a wonderful promise.

  79. That God will give you his Holy Spirit.

  80. That he promises to be with you every single day.

  81. For Christians today, we have the whole story.

  82. We're not like these disciples.

  83. We know the whole story.

  84. We know of Jesus.

  85. But I wonder if we can also be like these disciples,

  86. where we need to continue to learn and get to know our God better.

  87. Imagine thinking that we could fully understand God now.

  88. What a puny, tiny God he'd have to be for me to get my head around him.

  89. God is massive.

  90. He is way too amazing.

  91. His love is beyond us.

  92. His justice is always right.

  93. But he is a God who continues to reveal who he is.

  94. We get to know him better as we continue to follow him.

  95. So just like these disciples had an opportunity to hear the gospel

  96. and got to know God fully,

  97. we continue to get to know God as we follow him and read his word.

  98. For me personally, I've gotten to know God more and more

  99. as I've gone through life and as I've read his word.

  100. As I've been sinned against and worked hard not to hold a grudge,

  101. I've learned how hard it is to forgive other people

  102. and how amazing my God is that he would forgive me.

  103. As a father, I learned the hard way about my own lack of patience

  104. and how amazing God's patience is for us, his little children.

  105. My own anger at lockdown rule breakers has reminded me of God's love for us,

  106. his enemies.

  107. The joy of relationship with God is that we get to know him more and more each day

  108. as we continue to hear from him and talk to him

  109. and journey through life following him.

  110. So let me encourage you.

  111. Keep letting the gospel impact your belief about God

  112. because we never arrive fully knowing him

  113. until we arrive with him.

  114. That's our first point this morning, fairly short point to start us off.

  115. God impacts our belief in God.

  116. We continue to get to know him.

  117. But it also impacts our desire to have control.

  118. That's our second point today.

  119. The gospel impacts our control.

  120. Paul stayed in Ephesus.

  121. He was there preaching for two years

  122. and he moved from the synagogue to a lecture hall.

  123. And Luke expresses the impact of Paul's preaching by saying in verse 10

  124. that all of the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia

  125. had heard the word of the Lord.

  126. God worked through Paul to show that God is the one who is in control.

  127. Everybody is hearing about it

  128. and God does wonderful miracles through Paul to prove it.

  129. Verse 11.

  130. God did extraordinary miracles through Paul

  131. so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him

  132. were taken to the sick

  133. and their illnesses were cured

  134. and the evil spirits left them.

  135. This is a wonderful picture of both the gospel going out through Paul's preaching

  136. but also God's power working to show that God is really in control.

  137. And Luke sets up a contrast.

  138. You've got Paul on the one hand

  139. who is preaching, who knows God, who's doing these amazing miracles

  140. and another group of people who are trying to imitate him.

  141. Luke tells us a story of the seven sons of Sceva

  142. who were exorcists.

  143. They were ghostbusters.

  144. In first century Asia, exorcism could be a lucrative business.

  145. And the Jews in the ancient world were pretty famous

  146. for being able to cast out demons.

  147. And there were seven sons of a Jewish priest named Sceva

  148. and they were in the business of exorcism.

  149. And they wanted to get in on this new technique

  150. of healing and doing miracles that Paul had.

  151. You know, it's like they've just been to a conference

  152. and they've heard everybody saying that a new way to do business

  153. was to use the name of Jesus.

  154. And so, verse 13, they try out this new technique they've heard.

  155. They would say,

  156. in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches,

  157. I command you to come out.

  158. It's almost like knowing a friend of a friend

  159. and saying you actually know them.

  160. Except this grasping for power and control leaves them in trouble.

  161. I love, I don't love too much about the evil spirits,

  162. but I really appreciate the response from this evil spirit

  163. to these men who are trying to have control.

  164. Have a look at verse 15.

  165. Jesus I know.

  166. And Paul I know about.

  167. But who are you?

  168. And then the man with the evil spirit beats them.

  169. And the seven sons of Sceva run out naked.

  170. Their actions show how foolish it is

  171. to try and name check Jesus for money and power and control.

  172. Instead of submitting their lives to him,

  173. following him.

  174. Many of us can do the same thing.

  175. Instead of following Jesus,

  176. instead of submitting to him,

  177. maybe we just name check him.

  178. You know, on the census the other week,

  179. we just ticked Christian.

  180. And instead of actually submitting to Jesus

  181. as the Lord over our lives,

  182. we try and hold on to power and control.

  183. These men are ultimately shamed in front of everybody else.

  184. Stripped naked and humiliated.

  185. Let's not be shamed before God on the final day

  186. if we just give him lip service.

  187. If we just say we know him

  188. without actually ever getting to know Jesus.

  189. This situation with the seven sons of Sceva

  190. enhances the reputation of Jesus.

  191. When the people in Ephesus hear about it,

  192. they are afraid of Jesus and hold him in high honour.

  193. They realise, wow,

  194. there is something special about Jesus

  195. that we haven't seen from anyone else.

  196. And these people realise

  197. they can't hedge their bets.

  198. They can't try and hold on to power and control

  199. and follow Jesus.

  200. They can't have it both ways.

  201. And so we get this wonderful picture

  202. of radical discipleship in verse 19.

  203. Have a look.

  204. Verse 19.

  205. A number who had practised sorcery

  206. brought their scrolls together

  207. and burned them publicly.

  208. When they calculated the value of the scrolls,

  209. the total came to 50,000 drachmas.

  210. The result of the story of Jesus' power and control

  211. is that people leave their backup plans behind.

  212. 50,000 drachmas is a lot of money.

  213. That's 50,000 days labour.

  214. This is an incredible amount of money.

  215. Many people at this time

  216. would have had magic scrolls.

  217. It was a way to practice magic

  218. and sorcery and witchcraft.

  219. This was how you could have power and control

  220. in the first century.

  221. This was how you could have

  222. some power and control

  223. over death, disease and the devil.

  224. And at this point in the church

  225. it's full of syncretism.

  226. Mixing of religions.

  227. Mixing Christianity and witchcraft.

  228. They hadn't yet fully converted to Christianity.

  229. They're not wholly trusting in Jesus.

  230. They're still holding on to their scrolls,

  231. to their magic spells,

  232. to their control.

  233. But when they realise how empty

  234. and meaningless these words on parchment are,

  235. they don't even sell them,

  236. they burn them.

  237. It's a picture of true radical discipleship.

  238. People getting rid of their backup plan.

  239. Their attempts at control over death,

  240. disease and the devil

  241. and instead trusting fully in Jesus.

  242. In verse 20,

  243. in this way,

  244. the word of the Lord spread widely

  245. and grew in power.

  246. People chose radical discipleship.

  247. They gave up their backup plans,

  248. their control

  249. and trusted in Jesus.

  250. And it spread the gospel.

  251. This week,

  252. I was reading

  253. about some Chinese war history.

  254. And in the later years

  255. of the Qing dynasty,

  256. there was a general called

  257. Xiang Yu.

  258. He was second in command

  259. to a leader called Song Yi.

  260. And they and their armies

  261. had been repeatedly defeated

  262. by the Qing armies

  263. and been forced to retreat.

  264. And so they retreated

  265. to try and wait out their enemy.

  266. And eventually,

  267. their army was tired

  268. and lethargic,

  269. waiting for the enemy

  270. to be weakened.

  271. But Xiang Yu,

  272. the second in command,

  273. realized

  274. waiting wasn't going to work.

  275. They had to do something radical.

  276. They were going to run out of food.

  277. The men were going to be weak.

  278. So Xiang Yu,

  279. the second in command,

  280. took charge.

  281. He killed

  282. his commander, Song Yi.

  283. He took control of the armies

  284. and marched across

  285. the Yellow River

  286. to fight the enemy troops.

  287. What is most amazing

  288. is that he ordered

  289. his troops

  290. to sink their ships,

  291. to break their cooking pots,

  292. and to only take

  293. three days worth of food with them.

  294. His message was really clear.

  295. We will win

  296. or we will die trying.

  297. There is no going back.

  298. Although his troops

  299. were outnumbered 10 to 1,

  300. Xiang Yu's army

  301. crushed

  302. the Qing troops.

  303. Xiang Yu gained

  304. much fame

  305. for his efforts

  306. and there is a phrase

  307. in Chinese

  308. that came from it.

  309. The phrase is

  310. Polful Chen Zhou,

  311. which literally means

  312. break your pots,

  313. sink your ships.

  314. There is no turning back.

  315. Polful Chen Zhou.

  316. That's what the seven sons

  317. of Sceva

  318. didn't have.

  319. They didn't have

  320. total commitment

  321. to Jesus.

  322. Jesus was just

  323. a magic word

  324. to them.

  325. And this is what

  326. the people

  327. in the Ephesus church

  328. realise.

  329. There can be no

  330. backup plan

  331. to Jesus.

  332. Jesus is

  333. the only plan.

  334. Yet I wonder,

  335. is it still possible

  336. that we hold on

  337. to our backup plans?

  338. Our control,

  339. particularly over death,

  340. disease,

  341. and the devil.

  342. In this season of COVID,

  343. are you holding on

  344. to other backup plans

  345. and not trusting God

  346. fully?

  347. Now,

  348. some of us

  349. might mix

  350. Christianity

  351. with superstition.

  352. Mixing Christianity

  353. with

  354. superstitious practices

  355. and modern-day

  356. witchcraft,

  357. like Ouija boards,

  358. tarot cards,

  359. astrology,

  360. horoscopes,

  361. fortune tellers,

  362. most of these

  363. are fake.

  364. But when we trust

  365. in them

  366. to give us

  367. some control,

  368. to give us

  369. some idea

  370. of where we are

  371. to go in the future,

  372. we are making

  373. an idol to worship

  374. and we are not

  375. trusting in God

  376. fully.

  377. Now,

  378. it might not be,

  379. for most of us,

  380. magic scrolls

  381. and sorcery

  382. or even modern-day

  383. witchcraft.

  384. But we have

  385. many other issues,

  386. many other ways

  387. of trying to hold

  388. on to control

  389. in the world

  390. around us.

  391. It might be

  392. trying to have

  393. a certain amount

  394. of money,

  395. a certain amount

  396. of money in my life

  397. and then I'll be

  398. okay,

  399. then I'll be safe.

  400. If I've got

  401. a certain amount

  402. of money,

  403. it doesn't matter

  404. if I get sick,

  405. I'll be able

  406. to live on that.

  407. The Ephesian church

  408. tried to mix

  409. their Christianity

  410. with other things

  411. and they ended up

  412. burning them

  413. because they realized

  414. that those other things

  415. didn't compare

  416. at all to Jesus.

  417. Following God

  418. without a backup plan

  419. is what true

  420. discipleship looks like.

  421. Without another option.

  422. It's that phrase,

  423. powerful change

  424. to burn the other

  425. options

  426. to fully

  427. follow Jesus.

  428. That is what

  429. the gospel

  430. calls us to do.

  431. It impacts

  432. all of our life

  433. and not just

  434. the church

  435. we tune into

  436. on Sunday,

  437. not just what we

  438. tick on the census.

  439. Has God been

  440. speaking to you

  441. about a certain

  442. aspect of your life?

  443. Where is he

  444. putting his finger

  445. on you and saying

  446. don't trust this?

  447. Don't trust in your money.

  448. Give your control

  449. over to me.

  450. Don't trust

  451. in your selfishness.

  452. Don't trust in

  453. that everything

  454. will be in fine.

  455. Don't trust

  456. that you've got this.

  457. Don't trust

  458. in your pride.

  459. Trust in me.

  460. We've seen today

  461. that the gospel

  462. is not just something

  463. we tick on a census

  464. but it impacts

  465. all of our lives.

  466. from what we believe

  467. about God

  468. to what we try

  469. and control.

  470. Finally,

  471. today,

  472. our third point,

  473. we'll see God's

  474. impact on our worship

  475. and specifically

  476. money.

  477. The gospel

  478. has spread so much

  479. through Ephesus

  480. that Luke notes

  481. in verse 23

  482. that there was

  483. a disturbance

  484. about the way.

  485. There was a disturbance

  486. for Christians.

  487. There was a

  488. silversmith

  489. by the name

  490. of Demetrius

  491. and he was

  492. greatly angered

  493. at the progress

  494. of Christianity

  495. and the disruption

  496. that Christians

  497. brought to him.

  498. He was a silversmith

  499. and silver

  500. was what fueled

  501. the Gentile economy

  502. and it was heavily

  503. used in idol making.

  504. Demetrius

  505. made shrines

  506. and idols

  507. of Artemis

  508. also known

  509. as Aphrodite

  510. the goddess

  511. of love.

  512. Artemis

  513. had a temple

  514. in Ephesus

  515. and this was

  516. one of the

  517. seven wonders

  518. of the ancient world.

  519. This was the

  520. biggest building

  521. that existed

  522. at the time.

  523. So you can imagine

  524. how this city

  525. would have had

  526. pride

  527. in this

  528. temple

  529. and in this

  530. God.

  531. It's like when

  532. people come to

  533. Sydney,

  534. back in those years

  535. when people

  536. could be tourists,

  537. people come to

  538. Sydney and it's like

  539. have you visited

  540. the Opera House?

  541. Have you seen

  542. the Harbour Bridge?

  543. People going to

  544. Ephesus,

  545. they would be

  546. asked,

  547. have you seen

  548. our great

  549. temple to

  550. Artemis?

  551. The gospel

  552. spreads in

  553. this city.

  554. The gospel

  555. which says

  556. idols

  557. are nothing.

  558. These gods

  559. are not real.

  560. This gospel

  561. was critical

  562. of the pagan

  563. culture.

  564. Demetrius

  565. would have been

  566. losing business,

  567. losing silver

  568. hand over fist

  569. and he would

  570. have felt

  571. the loss

  572. of prestige

  573. for himself

  574. and his city

  575. and for the

  576. God that he

  577. worshipped.

  578. The gospel

  579. invades

  580. every aspect

  581. of life

  582. and it's

  583. impacting

  584. business for

  585. these tradies.

  586. It's impacting

  587. their economy.

  588. It's changing

  589. what people are

  590. spending their

  591. money on

  592. and their

  593. time on

  594. and the gospel

  595. confronts

  596. both the

  597. sinfulness

  598. in our

  599. hearts,

  600. the gospel

  601. also confronts

  602. the sin

  603. of the

  604. city

  605. and when

  606. it does

  607. it causes

  608. friction.

  609. Have a look

  610. with me at

  611. verse 25

  612. of chapter 19

  613. and see how

  614. the gospel

  615. is impacting

  616. Demetrius.

  617. Demetrius is

  618. speaking here

  619. and he read

  620. you know my

  621. friends

  622. that we

  623. receive a

  624. good income

  625. from this

  626. business

  627. and you

  628. see and

  629. hear how

  630. this fellow

  631. Paul has

  632. convinced

  633. and led

  634. astray

  635. large numbers

  636. of people

  637. here in

  638. Ephesus

  639. and in

  640. practically

  641. the whole

  642. province

  643. of Asia

  644. what a

  645. wonderful

  646. report

  647. about the

  648. gospel

  649. going

  650. out.

  651. He says

  652. that gods

  653. made by

  654. human hands

  655. are no

  656. gods at

  657. all.

  658. There is

  659. danger

  660. not only

  661. that our

  662. trade will

  663. lose its

  664. good name

  665. but also

  666. that the

  667. temple of

  668. the great

  669. goddess

  670. Artemis

  671. will be

  672. discredited

  673. and the

  674. goddess

  675. herself

  676. who is

  677. worshipped

  678. throughout

  679. the province

  680. of Asia

  681. and the

  682. world

  683. will be

  684. robbed

  685. of her

  686. divine

  687. majesty.

  688. Demetrius

  689. he's worried

  690. about his

  691. income

  692. he's worried

  693. about the

  694. large amount

  695. of people

  696. becoming

  697. Christians

  698. he's worried

  699. about society

  700. changing around

  701. him.

  702. Much like for

  703. Christians today

  704. who see society

  705. changing around

  706. them and go

  707. it's not like how

  708. it was when I

  709. grew up.

  710. That's Demetrius.

  711. He's seeing people

  712. become Christians

  713. and he's going

  714. it's not how it

  715. should be.

  716. It's not like the

  717. old days.

  718. He's worried

  719. about people in

  720. his trade

  721. are going to

  722. continue to make

  723. money to make

  724. gods.

  725. He's worried

  726. about the

  727. God he

  728. worships.

  729. Demetrius

  730. hasn't seen

  731. the Christians

  732. come in and

  733. said you

  734. Christians are

  735. fine you

  736. stay over

  737. there I'll

  738. believe what

  739. I believe you

  740. believe what

  741. you believe and

  742. we can

  743. coexist.

  744. He hasn't

  745. even just

  746. said keep

  747. it away from

  748. me good for

  749. you I don't

  750. want to hear

  751. it.

  752. Demetrius

  753. sees the

  754. massive impact

  755. of Christianity

  756. in life.

  757. He sees its

  758. impact on

  759. the economy.

  760. It probably

  761. would have

  762. been easier

  763. for him if

  764. he could

  765. transition his

  766. work to

  767. making new

  768. gods to

  769. making whoever

  770. this new

  771. God is but

  772. the God

  773. that we

  774. worship can't

  775. be made by

  776. human hands.

  777. Paul himself

  778. he's not afraid

  779. of this pagan

  780. worldview.

  781. Instead he

  782. confronts them

  783. and he has

  784. seen the impact

  785. of the gospel.

  786. It's easy to

  787. dismiss Demetrius'

  788. concerns because

  789. we don't live

  790. like that.

  791. I don't know

  792. anybody who

  793. makes their

  794. living carving

  795. out idols of

  796. gods.

  797. And yet for

  798. us we often

  799. worship more

  800. intangible things.

  801. Ideas,

  802. ambition,

  803. the amount of

  804. zeros in our

  805. bank account,

  806. maybe physical

  807. things like

  808. house or beauty.

  809. We take

  810. something good

  811. from God

  812. that he has

  813. created and

  814. we worship it

  815. as the

  816. creator.

  817. Or we can

  818. run the risk

  819. of syncretism

  820. which is what

  821. the Ephesian

  822. church was

  823. doing when

  824. they were

  825. mixing their

  826. religion where

  827. we worship

  828. multiple gods.

  829. For an hour

  830. or so on a

  831. Sunday morning

  832. we'll worship

  833. the God of

  834. the Bible but

  835. Monday to

  836. Friday I'll

  837. worship the

  838. pride and

  839. glory of

  840. myself at

  841. work or

  842. at school.

  843. I'll

  844. worship the

  845. pride of a

  846. sporting

  847. accomplishment.

  848. Then it

  849. gets to the

  850. weekend Friday

  851. afternoon and

  852. I'm going to

  853. worship pleasure.

  854. And maybe if I

  855. meet with others

  856. socially distanced

  857. down at the

  858. park I'm going

  859. to worship my

  860. kids and my

  861. family by telling

  862. them how great I

  863. am and how

  864. great my kids

  865. are.

  866. Demetrius could

  867. see where the

  868. gospel was

  869. impacting all of

  870. life.

  871. He did not

  872. like it.

  873. Is it

  874. possible that

  875. we can become

  876. too content

  877. and the

  878. gospel isn't

  879. radically changing

  880. our lives

  881. anymore?

  882. Is it

  883. possible that

  884. we've gotten

  885. inoculated

  886. against the

  887. gospel and

  888. it's not

  889. impacting us?

  890. When I was

  891. younger I

  892. didn't eat a

  893. whole lot of

  894. spicy food but

  895. now I really

  896. love the stuff.

  897. I really like

  898. two in

  899. particular.

  900. one spicy

  901. sauce is

  902. called

  903. laogama.

  904. It's a

  905. Chinese one.

  906. And this

  907. one,

  908. sriracha,

  909. I've been

  910. putting a lot

  911. of this on

  912. food recently.

  913. I really

  914. like it.

  915. And I've

  916. gotten used

  917. to it.

  918. When we

  919. have dinner

  920. and it's

  921. got a bit

  922. of a spice,

  923. Alyssa and

  924. I, we're

  925. totally fine,

  926. don't even

  927. notice it.

  928. And then we

  929. look over at

  930. the kids and

  931. they're sweating,

  932. they're drinking

  933. litres of water,

  934. they're just,

  935. I can't eat

  936. this.

  937. I've gotten

  938. so used to

  939. it, it

  940. doesn't affect

  941. me anymore.

  942. I've gotten

  943. comfortable with

  944. it.

  945. Until, of

  946. course, I

  947. accidentally put

  948. too much

  949. in.

  950. I remember

  951. one time I

  952. was at a

  953. movie and

  954. it was all

  955. dark and I

  956. put a little

  957. bit of

  958. wasabi or

  959. what I

  960. thought was

  961. a little

  962. bit of

  963. wasabi on

  964. my sushi,

  965. but it was

  966. a huge

  967. amount and

  968. it cleared

  969. out everything.

  970. A spicy

  971. sauce doesn't

  972. impact me until

  973. I accidentally

  974. put too

  975. much of it

  976. in.

  977. And then

  978. I notice

  979. it.

  980. The gospel

  981. is intrusive.

  982. The gospel

  983. is something

  984. that should

  985. impact all

  986. of our

  987. lives.

  988. And yet

  989. we can

  990. get used

  991. to it.

  992. We can

  993. get comfortable

  994. with it

  995. and complacent.

  996. If you're

  997. still not

  998. sure about

  999. who Jesus

  1000. is,

  1001. maybe you've

  1002. heard the

  1003. news about

  1004. Jesus dying

  1005. on the

  1006. cross,

  1007. rising to

  1008. life so

  1009. that you

  1010. too can

  1011. have

  1012. life.

  1013. Maybe

  1014. you've

  1015. heard this

  1016. message so

  1017. many times

  1018. you've

  1019. just gotten

  1020. used to

  1021. it.

  1022. Take a

  1023. moment and

  1024. consider how

  1025. amazing it

  1026. is that

  1027. the God

  1028. of the

  1029. universe

  1030. would die

  1031. for you

  1032. because he

  1033. loves you.

  1034. Pour a

  1035. bit extra

  1036. sauce onto

  1037. the reality

  1038. that God

  1039. himself would

  1040. die for

  1041. you so

  1042. that you

  1043. can be

  1044. impacted by

  1045. the gospel

  1046. today.

  1047. It might

  1048. be the

  1049. same for

  1050. those

  1051. following

  1052. Jesus.

  1053. The gospel

  1054. has impacted

  1055. so many

  1056. different parts

  1057. of my

  1058. life but

  1059. I've

  1060. gotten

  1061. used to

  1062. it just

  1063. like eating

  1064. spicy food.

  1065. We can't

  1066. keep doing

  1067. the same

  1068. things expecting

  1069. different

  1070. results.

  1071. Do you

  1072. want God

  1073. to impact

  1074. your life?

  1075. Do you

  1076. want to

  1077. have a

  1078. closer walk

  1079. with him?

  1080. Do you

  1081. need help

  1082. handing over

  1083. control to

  1084. God?

  1085. I want to

  1086. encourage you

  1087. to do

  1088. something

  1089. different.

  1090. Effectively

  1091. pour a bit

  1092. more chili

  1093. sauce on

  1094. it so

  1095. that you

  1096. see God's

  1097. impact in

  1098. your life.

  1099. I want to

  1100. challenge you.

  1101. I want to

  1102. challenge you

  1103. this week.

  1104. I want to

  1105. challenge everybody

  1106. watching.

  1107. I want to

  1108. challenge you

  1109. for the next

  1110. seven days

  1111. to spend

  1112. five minutes

  1113. reading the

  1114. Bible and

  1115. five minutes

  1116. praying.

  1117. Challenge for

  1118. the next

  1119. seven days

  1120. five minutes

  1121. reading the

  1122. Bible,

  1123. five minutes

  1124. praying.

  1125. Let me

  1126. encourage you

  1127. send me a

  1128. message.

  1129. If we're

  1130. friends on

  1131. Facebook you

  1132. can send

  1133. me a

  1134. message.

  1135. If we're

  1136. not yet

  1137. friends on

  1138. Facebook send

  1139. me an

  1140. email.

  1141. James.

  1142. Barnett

  1143. at

  1144. stpauls.org.au

  1145. Let me

  1146. know you're

  1147. doing this

  1148. challenge so

  1149. that we can

  1150. do this

  1151. together.

  1152. Let's

  1153. read the

  1154. Bible for

  1155. five minutes

  1156. and pray

  1157. for five

  1158. minutes each

  1159. day for the

  1160. next seven

  1161. days.

  1162. Let's do

  1163. something

  1164. different so

  1165. that we can

  1166. see God's

  1167. impact on

  1168. our life.

  1169. We are at

  1170. the start of

  1171. a season

  1172. celebrating what

  1173. God is doing

  1174. across the

  1175. world in our

  1176. mission month.

  1177. life.

  1178. But let's

  1179. first ask God

  1180. to change

  1181. our hearts

  1182. so that we

  1183. can know

  1184. him and

  1185. trust him

  1186. and worship

  1187. him more

  1188. and more.

  1189. Let me

  1190. pray.

  1191. Heavenly

  1192. Father we

  1193. thank you

  1194. for your

  1195. love for

  1196. us.

  1197. Thank you

  1198. that your

  1199. gospel has

  1200. gone out and

  1201. it has come

  1202. to us here

  1203. far from

  1204. Ephesus.

  1205. But Lord we

  1206. thank you for

  1207. how you are

  1208. impacting our

  1209. lives.

  1210. Father we

  1211. thank you

  1212. that Jesus

  1213. has died

  1214. and been

  1215. raised so

  1216. that we

  1217. can know

  1218. you,

  1219. that we

  1220. can have

  1221. relationship

  1222. with you

  1223. forever.

  1224. Heavenly

  1225. Father we

  1226. ask this

  1227. week over

  1228. the next

  1229. seven days

  1230. that you

  1231. would work

  1232. on our

  1233. hearts,

  1234. that we

  1235. would know

  1236. you,

  1237. that we

  1238. would trust

  1239. you and

  1240. we would

  1241. worship you

  1242. more and

  1243. more each

  1244. day.

  1245. Amen.
