  1. Once, there was a moth. That's right, a moth. And he went to see a podiatrist.

  2. The podiatrist said, moth, what seems to be the trouble? How can I help?

  3. The moth said to the podiatrist, doc, I'm in a bad way. My life has fallen completely apart.

  4. My friends have all deserted me. Even my family won't talk to me. I can't find work. My marriage

  5. is falling apart. Nothing makes me happy. I just don't know what to do, doc. What do I do?

  6. The podiatrist paused and then replied, moth, I can see you're in bad shape. But with everything

  7. that you have going on in your life, you should be seeing a psychiatrist, not a podiatrist.

  8. Why did you come to see me? And the moth replied, the light was on.

  9. Where do we turn when our life gets out of control?

  10. Where have you flown when overrun by anxiety or fear? Unlike that moth, we need to turn toward

  11. the light that can help us with our troubles. In seasons of trouble and darkness, God is near to us.

  12. And for those seasons, he has provided a pattern of prayer that is a path into his light called lament.

  13. Lament is a uniquely Christian response to suffering and tragedy. When we lament, we take our emotions

  14. and turn to God with them. We tell him what is happening. We ask him to intervene. We challenge his promises.

  15. And there we can rediscover the hope we have in a relationship with him.

  16. When we lament God, he is our weeping. He listens to our cries and he accepts our prayer.

  17. So in your season of despair, come lament in the light of your hope in Jesus Christ.

  18. Lament is a neglected response to tragedy and suffering in our churches.

  19. Christians rarely lament together or privately.

  20. But lament is worth rediscovering and practicing.

  21. Because the Bible is filled with the language of lament.

  22. In public and private prayers and songs.

  23. We'll discover in the weeks to come the book of Lamentations,

  24. which in its entirety is one lament.

  25. There are also more than 40 psalms of lament that are written to be sung all together.

  26. If this biblical pattern of lament is here for us, why aren't we lamenting?

  27. Local Christian author Peter Davis says that Christians in Sydney, and churches generally in Sydney,

  28. are afraid of lament.

  29. Is that true?

  30. In our multi-ethnic church, most of us only reveal negative emotions from grief and pain in private.

  31. Could it be that there's some sort of unspoken rule amongst us that any overflow of emotion is wrong?

  32. For many, it's just not done or improper.

  33. But perhaps we would rather appear respectable than openly upset.

  34. At an online funeral I attended recently, this was on full display.

  35. It was on Zoom, and there might have been, you know, 80 to 100 faces on screens.

  36. And every single person who had an opportunity to speak,

  37. before or while they cried, apologized,

  38. at a funeral,

  39. the most appropriate place I can think of,

  40. for shedding tears together.

  41. In some families, emotions are seen as weakness.

  42. They prove a person is out of control,

  43. has lost their self-reliance,

  44. or lost their capacity to contribute to the family.

  45. But who of us has not felt out of control completely in our lives?

  46. Too weak to fix a situation,

  47. or just not knowing the answer of how to solve what's going on in our family.

  48. Locally,

  49. hiding our hurting is not working.

  50. Mental health issues are a major concern

  51. in our suburb of Chatswood

  52. and at our local government area of Willoughby.

  53. But we rarely talk about our struggles,

  54. especially together.

  55. In some families,

  56. and in some churches, sadly too,

  57. positive emotions are so obsessively sought

  58. that any negative emotions are rejected

  59. or stifled.

  60. Look out for those

  61. live your best life now messages.

  62. Pain and grief cannot be kept

  63. from our lives.

  64. In our hiding of these emotions,

  65. we need to take them somewhere

  66. and we often go,

  67. like the moth,

  68. to the wrong light.

  69. It might be

  70. something on a screen.

  71. It might be

  72. a destructive relationship

  73. or an unsafe relationship.

  74. It might end up in an addiction.

  75. Or if you turn completely inward,

  76. you'll find yourself breaking inside.

  77. We naturally react

  78. to suffering and tragedy

  79. as our culture

  80. says that we should.

  81. What would it take for us

  82. to look at God's Word

  83. as His followers?

  84. To look at God's Word

  85. as our guide

  86. to reacting to all that is hard

  87. and horrifying

  88. in our lives?

  89. It would take a deep,

  90. a deep,

  91. deep,

  92. deep trust

  93. that the God

  94. who created us,

  95. who knows us

  96. and is in control,

  97. understands

  98. and can act.

  99. A deeper faith

  100. to react to hardship

  101. God's way.

  102. The Bible

  103. provides us

  104. a way

  105. to not be okay

  106. and to come

  107. to God

  108. safely,

  109. never hiding

  110. or hurting,

  111. never hiding

  112. our hurting

  113. from our Father.

  114. So that's why

  115. lamenting

  116. is crucial

  117. for Christians

  118. in Sydney

  119. and across the world.

  120. It's okay

  121. to lament

  122. and it's needed.

  123. But James mentioned

  124. before

  125. that people

  126. have been calling

  127. tomorrow

  128. Freedom Day.

  129. Why are we

  130. talking about

  131. lament right now?

  132. Why hope

  133. in despair

  134. now?

  135. The worst

  136. is over,

  137. right?

  138. Life

  139. has been hard

  140. for all

  141. in lockdown

  142. in our city

  143. but life

  144. is often hard

  145. and for some people

  146. it's always

  147. hard.

  148. Across the world

  149. near and far

  150. life is full

  151. of griefs

  152. and pains.

  153. All of us

  154. flick

  155. on our devices

  156. past articles

  157. whether it be

  158. in the news

  159. or from other

  160. organisations

  161. of horrors

  162. all across

  163. the world

  164. let alone

  165. in your own

  166. life.

  167. It's so hard

  168. to see

  169. all of this

  170. grief

  171. and pain

  172. and know

  173. what to do

  174. about it.

  175. If we are

  176. seeing tragedy

  177. everywhere

  178. and it is

  179. such a heavy

  180. burden

  181. where do we

  182. turn to hand

  183. it over?

  184. We're here

  185. in this series

  186. to learn

  187. rather than

  188. reject

  189. lament

  190. we need

  191. to embrace

  192. it

  193. so that we

  194. are ready.

  195. Discovering

  196. lament

  197. starts when we

  198. open our

  199. Bibles

  200. and read

  201. along with

  202. laments

  203. like Psalm

  204. 6

  205. as Flora

  206. just read

  207. to us.

  208. Thank you

  209. Flora.

  210. As we

  211. read and

  212. preach along

  213. with the

  214. laments of

  215. Scripture

  216. they can

  217. become

  218. our prayers

  219. to lament

  220. or shape

  221. our lament

  222. prayers

  223. for right

  224. now

  225. for some

  226. of us

  227. and certainly

  228. soon

  229. for the

  230. rest of

  231. us.

  232. In lament

  233. we approach

  234. God

  235. directly

  236. and that

  237. might feel

  238. unusual

  239. for some

  240. of you.

  241. It may be

  242. that you

  243. rarely

  244. approach

  245. God

  246. one-to-one

  247. in prayer.

  248. But even

  249. though it

  250. is

  251. uncomfortable

  252. the good

  253. news is

  254. that you

  255. won't be

  256. learning it

  257. alone.

  258. As I

  259. said before

  260. Psalms

  261. and lament

  262. Psalms

  263. specifically

  264. are written

  265. so that

  266. God's

  267. people can

  268. sing them

  269. all together.

  270. Open

  271. to Psalm

  272. 6.

  273. Make sure

  274. you've got

  275. that in

  276. front of

  277. you.

  278. Think

  279. about

  280. what it

  281. felt like

  282. to hear

  283. those

  284. words

  285. of

  286. David

  287. in

  288. that

  289. Psalm

  290. when

  291. Flora

  292. read

  293. them

  294. out.

  295. Imagine

  296. showing

  297. up to

  298. church

  299. and

  300. that's

  301. Psalm

  302. 1.

  303. We

  304. stand

  305. up

  306. in

  307. our

  308. homes

  309. or

  310. gathering

  311. soon

  312. and

  313. we

  314. sing

  315. Psalm

  316. 6.

  317. That

  318. would be

  319. a cultural

  320. rarity.

  321. It

  322. would be

  323. incredibly

  324. uncomfortable.

  325. But that's

  326. what this

  327. Psalm

  328. is for.

  329. it's

  330. not for

  331. singing

  332. to feel

  333. ourselves

  334. into some

  335. kind of

  336. depression

  337. and follow

  338. those emotions

  339. down the

  340. path to be

  341. where David

  342. is.

  343. No.

  344. We can't

  345. even sing

  346. ourselves

  347. into understanding

  348. where David

  349. was at.

  350. But we

  351. learn to

  352. lament

  353. like David

  354. when we

  355. sing

  356. psalms

  357. like this

  358. or songs

  359. like this

  360. together

  361. to prepare

  362. ourselves

  363. for the

  364. dark

  365. seasons

  366. of life

  367. to come.

  368. We

  369. could

  370. wait

  371. to learn

  372. lament

  373. and pick

  374. up lament

  375. scripture

  376. when our

  377. lives have

  378. completely

  379. fallen apart.

  380. life.

  381. But if you've

  382. been through a

  383. really difficult

  384. season of

  385. life or a

  386. time of high

  387. anxiety where

  388. your mind is

  389. spinning out of

  390. control, it's

  391. hard to tell

  392. where to

  393. turn.

  394. It's hard to

  395. tell light from

  396. light from

  397. light from

  398. the light.

  399. So we

  400. need

  401. words

  402. ready.

  403. Words

  404. ready to

  405. bring to

  406. God in

  407. patterns of

  408. lament

  409. learnt

  410. together

  411. through

  412. scripture

  413. and through

  414. song.

  415. Because we

  416. break.

  417. And life

  418. is not

  419. easy.

  420. There are

  421. griefs

  422. near to

  423. us,

  424. outside of

  425. us,

  426. and inside

  427. of us.

  428. In this

  429. series, we'll

  430. learn to

  431. lament

  432. a path

  433. to the

  434. light.

  435. So that

  436. when darkness

  437. comes, we

  438. know our

  439. way back

  440. to hope.

  441. Psalm 6

  442. is a

  443. song of

  444. David.

  445. It's for

  446. God's people

  447. to sing, to

  448. learn, to

  449. turn to

  450. God and to

  451. find hope

  452. in Him.

  453. But turn

  454. with me

  455. there to

  456. verse 8

  457. of Psalm

  458. 6.

  459. David

  460. boldly

  461. laments

  462. because of

  463. this.

  464. Because of

  465. these three

  466. wonderful

  467. truths.

  468. We're going

  469. to shape

  470. the rest

  471. of our

  472. time around

  473. these three.

  474. The Lord

  475. has heard

  476. my weeping.

  477. The Lord

  478. has heard

  479. my cry

  480. for help.

  481. The Lord

  482. accepts

  483. my prayer.

  484. First,

  485. the Lord

  486. has heard

  487. my weeping.

  488. This

  489. psalm is

  490. very personal.

  491. personal.

  492. It doesn't

  493. have the

  494. personal

  495. details you

  496. might expect.

  497. Say, if a

  498. friend was

  499. telling a

  500. friend, hey,

  501. this happened.

  502. I felt like

  503. this.

  504. Then I ran

  505. out of

  506. tissues,

  507. etc., etc.

  508. No.

  509. David, he was

  510. horribly sick

  511. in body and

  512. soul and

  513. somehow also

  514. at the same

  515. time in

  516. imminent danger

  517. from his

  518. enemies.

  519. enemies and

  520. a situation

  521. has arisen

  522. that takes

  523. a massive

  524. toll on

  525. him, inside

  526. and out, and

  527. he expects

  528. to die by

  529. sickness or

  530. sword in

  531. physical and

  532. mental agony.

  533. David's

  534. sickness gave

  535. him immense

  536. physical pain,

  537. down to his

  538. bones, to the

  539. point where he

  540. was weak and

  541. faint, as it

  542. says in verse

  543. 2.

  544. We don't know

  545. what it is.

  546. Till he was

  547. worn out and

  548. hoarse of

  549. voice from

  550. all his

  551. groaning, as

  552. it says in

  553. verse 6.

  554. His eyes went

  555. blind and

  556. failed him, as

  557. it says in

  558. verse 7, and

  559. when he closes

  560. them to rest, he

  561. cannot sleep, as

  562. it says in

  563. verse 5.

  564. He's also

  565. hurting in

  566. his soul.

  567. Verse 3

  568. says, my

  569. soul is in

  570. deep

  571. anguish.

  572. His

  573. soul blurs

  574. his

  575. perception of

  576. the world.

  577. His

  578. pain of

  579. soul blurs

  580. his perception

  581. of the world,

  582. as it says in

  583. verse 7.

  584. But the

  585. most worrying

  586. sign of

  587. David's

  588. situation, even

  589. though we

  590. don't know

  591. what it is,

  592. is how it

  593. looks.

  594. It's so

  595. bad that

  596. David's bed

  597. is swimming

  598. in his

  599. tears.

  600. Verse 6

  601. describes

  602. every place

  603. where David

  604. has sat

  605. as soaked.

  606. Every spot

  607. is soaked

  608. with weeping.

  609. This is

  610. long-term

  611. depression

  612. or anxiety.

  613. It's at

  614. least a

  615. night, but

  616. it's probably

  617. more, and

  618. it's weeping

  619. and crying

  620. and rehydrating

  621. and weeping

  622. and crying

  623. more.

  624. And only

  625. after at

  626. least one

  627. night of

  628. this dark

  629. situation

  630. does David

  631. open his

  632. mouth.

  633. It takes

  634. him breaking

  635. physically and

  636. emotionally.

  637. This once

  638. mighty warrior

  639. now cries

  640. out.

  641. His fear

  642. of death

  643. from

  644. sickness

  645. or from

  646. man

  647. overtakes

  648. his ability

  649. to process

  650. life in

  651. an orderly

  652. way.

  653. And stricken

  654. and panicked,

  655. he decided

  656. to cry

  657. out, possibly

  658. the most

  659. common lament

  660. in Scripture

  661. in verse 3,

  662. where he cries

  663. out,

  664. how long,

  665. oh Lord,

  666. how long?

  667. we should be

  668. ready to

  669. lament before

  670. we are

  671. completely

  672. broken, but

  673. we can't

  674. predict the

  675. speed that

  676. darkness will

  677. rush upon

  678. us.

  679. While lament

  680. is always a

  681. right response,

  682. let me say

  683. that clinical

  684. depression or

  685. anxiety or

  686. any other

  687. valid and

  688. treatable

  689. mental health

  690. issue,

  691. they can

  692. arise in

  693. dark seasons

  694. like David

  695. is describing

  696. now,

  697. even before.

  698. You could

  699. argue that

  700. Psalm 6

  701. shows some

  702. level of

  703. treatable

  704. clinical

  705. depression,

  706. for sure,

  707. in David.

  708. Lament

  709. cannot replace

  710. needed medical

  711. and professional

  712. help, which

  713. for most of

  714. us, we will

  715. need to engage

  716. with either

  717. in our own

  718. lives or in

  719. the lives of

  720. our family in

  721. our lifetime.

  722. lament is

  723. always there

  724. for every

  725. dark day,

  726. even before

  727. we see the

  728. cracks forming

  729. in our soul

  730. or in our

  731. circumstance.

  732. That is

  733. when we

  734. take up

  735. our lament

  736. to God.

  737. The Lord

  738. hears our

  739. cry.

  740. As David

  741. cries out

  742. to God,

  743. we see

  744. four

  745. characteristics

  746. of lament

  747. that together

  748. guide David

  749. back to

  750. his hope.

  751. David has

  752. been groaning

  753. and weeping

  754. aimlessly

  755. as a

  756. reflex to

  757. his pain

  758. and fear,

  759. but now

  760. his words

  761. become lament

  762. as he brings

  763. them to

  764. his Lord

  765. who can do

  766. something to

  767. help him.

  768. Verse 1,

  769. turn there

  770. with me.

  771. It says,

  772. Lord,

  773. do not

  774. rebuke me

  775. in your

  776. anger or

  777. discipline me

  778. in your

  779. wrath.

  780. Seems a

  781. strange place

  782. to start.

  783. David seems

  784. to be

  785. confessing

  786. something,

  787. but unlike

  788. many other

  789. Psalms that

  790. begin with

  791. a confession

  792. of a

  793. specific sin,

  794. David instead

  795. pleads with

  796. God and

  797. confesses

  798. his

  799. sinfulness.

  800. forgiveness.

  801. He makes

  802. a claim

  803. of need

  804. for God's

  805. grace toward

  806. him.

  807. David doesn't

  808. deserve his

  809. relationship with

  810. God,

  811. but he claims

  812. the relationship

  813. anyway.

  814. And he does

  815. not claim a

  816. right to his

  817. change of

  818. circumstances.

  819. He instead

  820. knows God's

  821. character is to

  822. save and to

  823. heal as he is

  824. gracious and

  825. loving.

  826. So he trusts

  827. God by

  828. grace.

  829. He trusts

  830. God's grace

  831. that he would

  832. hear him and

  833. heal him as

  834. he cries out

  835. in prayer.

  836. David then

  837. tells God of

  838. his situation,

  839. even though he

  840. knows God

  841. already sees

  842. it.

  843. all the

  844. tears and

  845. groans.

  846. God can

  847. already see

  848. all of it.

  849. We just

  850. went through

  851. how David

  852. describes his

  853. situation to

  854. God.

  855. That's how we

  856. know what

  857. David was

  858. going through.

  859. David tells

  860. God all of

  861. it.

  862. Think of

  863. how a

  864. little child

  865. reacts to

  866. falling down.

  867. the parent

  868. might be

  869. there and

  870. usually is

  871. there.

  872. If they're

  873. not on

  874. their phone,

  875. they're probably

  876. watching their

  877. child and

  878. their child

  879. knows it.

  880. And their

  881. child is

  882. running and

  883. playing and

  884. then their

  885. child falls

  886. down.

  887. They might

  888. skin their

  889. knees, hurt

  890. their hands

  891. and they run

  892. to their

  893. parent or

  894. their carer.

  895. And they

  896. say to

  897. them, what

  898. happened?

  899. Even though

  900. they just saw

  901. it.

  902. And the

  903. child says,

  904. I fell

  905. down.

  906. I got

  907. an

  908. owie.

  909. You see,

  910. part of

  911. lamenting is

  912. blurting out

  913. in our own

  914. words what

  915. God already

  916. sees.

  917. Doing this

  918. affirms our

  919. close relationship

  920. where we can

  921. share our

  922. hurting words

  923. with our

  924. loving Father.

  925. It's safe

  926. with Him

  927. because He

  928. hears what

  929. we say

  930. and we're

  931. near to

  932. His ear.

  933. God.

  934. Then David

  935. asks God

  936. to do

  937. something.

  938. He wants

  939. God to

  940. have mercy

  941. and deliver

  942. him out of

  943. his situation,

  944. verses 2 and

  945. 4.

  946. He asks

  947. specifically

  948. for healing

  949. in verse 2

  950. and that it

  951. would come

  952. quickly as

  953. he cries

  954. out, how

  955. long?

  956. He trusts

  957. in God

  958. to deliver

  959. him, even

  960. in verse 10

  961. to bring

  962. justice

  963. into his

  964. situation.

  965. In verse 4

  966. it says,

  967. save me

  968. because of

  969. your unfailing

  970. love.

  971. Because of

  972. the love

  973. that he sees

  974. in God,

  975. he trusts

  976. that he's

  977. going to be

  978. saved, or

  979. at least

  980. he claims

  981. that promise.

  982. In a

  983. relationship of

  984. grace and

  985. love with

  986. God, David

  987. can safely

  988. plead for

  989. help, but

  990. that verse 4

  991. save me

  992. because of

  993. your unfailing

  994. love, could

  995. also be

  996. in part a

  997. challenge to

  998. God.

  999. Does David

  1000. feel loved

  1001. by God

  1002. right now?

  1003. I suggest

  1004. he probably

  1005. doesn't feel

  1006. it.

  1007. It doesn't

  1008. mean it's

  1009. not true.

  1010. And then in

  1011. verse 5, David

  1012. continues to

  1013. challenge.

  1014. He says,

  1015. among the

  1016. dead no

  1017. one proclaims

  1018. your name.

  1019. Who praises

  1020. you from

  1021. the grave?

  1022. At death's

  1023. door, David

  1024. is challenging

  1025. God.

  1026. Surely God

  1027. would keep

  1028. his king

  1029. alive to

  1030. lead his

  1031. people to

  1032. follow him

  1033. as God

  1034. has promised.

  1035. Will God

  1036. save for

  1037. his own

  1038. name's sake?

  1039. How often

  1040. do you

  1041. challenge God

  1042. out loud

  1043. to his face?

  1044. Is that a

  1045. safe thing

  1046. to do?

  1047. Challenging

  1048. God in

  1049. lament

  1050. means

  1051. remembering

  1052. God's

  1053. promises

  1054. and seeing

  1055. if they

  1056. are contradicted

  1057. by our

  1058. negative

  1059. circumstances.

  1060. It's a

  1061. brave thing,

  1062. yet it's a

  1063. safe thing

  1064. for David

  1065. to do

  1066. because of

  1067. the close

  1068. relationship

  1069. that he has

  1070. with God.

  1071. and it's

  1072. a wise

  1073. thing

  1074. because when

  1075. we challenge

  1076. God's

  1077. promises,

  1078. they always

  1079. stand true

  1080. and sure,

  1081. no matter

  1082. the scrutiny

  1083. they are put

  1084. under.

  1085. And so

  1086. after David

  1087. cries out,

  1088. what happens?

  1089. we see

  1090. no evidence

  1091. of deliverance

  1092. or healing

  1093. from illness

  1094. or enemy.

  1095. But the

  1096. lament

  1097. changes tone

  1098. in verses

  1099. 9 and

  1100. 10.

  1101. David's

  1102. prayers

  1103. become

  1104. determined

  1105. and even

  1106. more certain.

  1107. In verse

  1108. 9 it says

  1109. he turns

  1110. away from

  1111. evil toward

  1112. God.

  1113. There's a

  1114. purposefulness

  1115. about whatever

  1116. he will do

  1117. next.

  1118. As he

  1119. tells God,

  1120. asks God

  1121. and challenges

  1122. God,

  1123. David finds

  1124. his way

  1125. to truth

  1126. in God's

  1127. promises.

  1128. He finds

  1129. God listening

  1130. to his

  1131. weeping,

  1132. hearing his

  1133. cries and

  1134. accepting his

  1135. prayer.

  1136. This is what

  1137. gives David

  1138. hope.

  1139. These verses

  1140. here.

  1141. The Lord

  1142. has heard

  1143. my

  1144. weeping.

  1145. The Lord

  1146. has heard

  1147. my cry

  1148. for mercy.

  1149. The Lord

  1150. accepts

  1151. my prayer.

  1152. As if

  1153. from nowhere

  1154. David has

  1155. this sudden

  1156. strength,

  1157. he rejects

  1158. the allure

  1159. of all the

  1160. other bright

  1161. lights that

  1162. a king

  1163. of a

  1164. country

  1165. could run

  1166. towards

  1167. in a dark

  1168. time like

  1169. this.

  1170. Whether it

  1171. be a

  1172. treaty with

  1173. the evil

  1174. nations around

  1175. David,

  1176. or whether

  1177. it be

  1178. a lust

  1179. after some

  1180. other

  1181. distraction

  1182. to run

  1183. away from

  1184. his internal

  1185. problems and

  1186. struggles.

  1187. Instead,

  1188. David embraces

  1189. the ability

  1190. of God

  1191. to comfort

  1192. him in

  1193. the promise

  1194. of God's

  1195. acceptance

  1196. of his

  1197. prayer

  1198. before God

  1199. heals or

  1200. saves.

  1201. David finds

  1202. his trust

  1203. in a

  1204. relationship

  1205. with God

  1206. that cannot

  1207. be broken

  1208. by any

  1209. circumstances

  1210. but can

  1211. be relied

  1212. on in

  1213. every

  1214. circumstance,

  1215. even this

  1216. circumstance.

  1217. So here I

  1218. imagine David's

  1219. tear-stained

  1220. face

  1221. becoming

  1222. peaceful,

  1223. maybe a

  1224. deep breath.

  1225. death.

  1226. And the

  1227. backing

  1228. music

  1229. turns from

  1230. minor to

  1231. major.

  1232. Maybe there's

  1233. a key

  1234. change,

  1235. or maybe

  1236. a peaceful

  1237. ending.

  1238. And then we

  1239. have verse

  1240. 10.

  1241. All my

  1242. enemies will

  1243. be overwhelmed

  1244. with shame

  1245. and anguish.

  1246. They will

  1247. turn back

  1248. and suddenly

  1249. be put to

  1250. shame.

  1251. This sounds

  1252. out of the

  1253. blue.

  1254. It sounds

  1255. a bit bold

  1256. for our

  1257. tongues.

  1258. Will David's

  1259. enemies be

  1260. turned back?

  1261. Will they

  1262. take on

  1263. David's

  1264. anguish of

  1265. soul that

  1266. we read about

  1267. in verse 3?

  1268. Will they

  1269. take that

  1270. on as

  1271. their own

  1272. somehow?

  1273. But no

  1274. matter the

  1275. outcome,

  1276. David is

  1277. confident in

  1278. God's ability

  1279. to do

  1280. verse 10.

  1281. He's

  1282. confident in

  1283. God's ability

  1284. to work

  1285. justice as

  1286. David sees

  1287. it.

  1288. and he's

  1289. comforted in

  1290. the acceptance

  1291. that God

  1292. has given

  1293. him in

  1294. relationship as

  1295. he is

  1296. lamenting in

  1297. prayer.

  1298. Lamenting

  1299. changed David

  1300. from verses

  1301. 1 to verse

  1302. 10.

  1303. But his

  1304. situation didn't

  1305. change, not

  1306. at all.

  1307. Lamenting led

  1308. David to hope,

  1309. to dismiss his

  1310. doubts, because

  1311. God heard him

  1312. weep.

  1313. He listened

  1314. to his

  1315. cry, and

  1316. he accepted

  1317. his prayer,

  1318. which confirmed

  1319. the relationship

  1320. that David

  1321. had by God's

  1322. grace and

  1323. unfailing love

  1324. for him.

  1325. For David,

  1326. that was

  1327. enough.

  1328. Today, you

  1329. might not be

  1330. in a place

  1331. like David

  1332. was, desperate

  1333. and despondent

  1334. or even

  1335. dying, but

  1336. if you

  1337. don't

  1338. lament

  1339. today, you

  1340. certainly will

  1341. soon.

  1342. We have

  1343. seen in

  1344. Psalm 6

  1345. that God

  1346. is the

  1347. light that

  1348. Scripture would

  1349. have us turn

  1350. to for help

  1351. in our darkest

  1352. hour.

  1353. So don't

  1354. wait until

  1355. your soul and

  1356. body have

  1357. recovered to

  1358. begin to

  1359. pray.

  1360. But come to

  1361. God in lament

  1362. while our

  1363. tears are

  1364. flowing.

  1365. We have

  1366. found here

  1367. that lamenting,

  1368. turning to

  1369. God, telling

  1370. God, asking

  1371. God, even

  1372. challenging

  1373. God, is a

  1374. pattern of

  1375. prayer and

  1376. lament that

  1377. God will hear

  1378. and accept.

  1379. And when we

  1380. come to him

  1381. to test our

  1382. relationship and

  1383. compare our

  1384. broken body,

  1385. soul, and

  1386. circumstances to

  1387. his promises

  1388. for now,

  1389. and for the

  1390. future, we

  1391. find him

  1392. trustworthy and

  1393. reliable.

  1394. In lament, we

  1395. can find hope,

  1396. and as we

  1397. hope, our

  1398. faith grows.

  1399. Faith does

  1400. not always

  1401. resolve life.

  1402. But with

  1403. faith, there

  1404. is forever,

  1405. forever hope

  1406. in Jesus.

  1407. God's

  1408. God's

  1409. love, and

  1410. he

  1411. was

  1412. loving, so

  1413. that he

  1414. would be a

  1415. saving God.

  1416. So he

  1417. came to him

  1418. and lamented.

  1419. He found

  1420. hope in

  1421. God's light,

  1422. the light of

  1423. his promises,

  1424. that one

  1425. day, justice

  1426. and peace

  1427. would be

  1428. done.

  1429. In his

  1430. life,

  1431. but in the

  1432. world, once

  1433. for all,

  1434. justice would

  1435. be done.

  1436. But David

  1437. didn't live

  1438. to see the

  1439. fullest display

  1440. of God's

  1441. grace, how

  1442. gracious God

  1443. would be,

  1444. but we get

  1445. to.

  1446. Today, we

  1447. have the

  1448. brightest view

  1449. of God's

  1450. guiding light

  1451. in the

  1452. darkness.

  1453. We have the

  1454. light of the

  1455. world, Jesus

  1456. Christ.

  1457. God's

  1458. grace is

  1459. on dazzling

  1460. display, and

  1461. it sears

  1462. our sight

  1463. when we

  1464. see Jesus

  1465. at the

  1466. cross.

  1467. It is

  1468. there where

  1469. Jesus took

  1470. the sin of

  1471. all who

  1472. believe in

  1473. him upon

  1474. himself,

  1475. dying in

  1476. agony in

  1477. our place,

  1478. so that we

  1479. could know

  1480. God's

  1481. grace, see

  1482. God's

  1483. grace, and

  1484. discover full

  1485. forgiveness.

  1486. How can

  1487. you know,

  1488. how can

  1489. you trust

  1490. right now,

  1491. 2021, in

  1492. Sydney or

  1493. wherever you

  1494. are in the

  1495. world, how

  1496. can you

  1497. know that

  1498. lamenting,

  1499. you're turning

  1500. to God, you're

  1501. telling God, you're

  1502. asking God, you're

  1503. challenging God,

  1504. and hoping in

  1505. him, how can

  1506. you know that

  1507. is worth it?

  1508. How can we

  1509. know that

  1510. our tears and

  1511. our prayers are

  1512. not for

  1513. nothing?

  1514. We can

  1515. know because

  1516. Jesus became

  1517. God's enemy

  1518. and died

  1519. in our

  1520. sorrows.

  1521. Jesus bore

  1522. the pain and

  1523. wrath that

  1524. in verse 10

  1525. of this

  1526. psalm, David

  1527. imagined should

  1528. be poured out

  1529. on his worst

  1530. enemy.

  1531. That's what

  1532. David saw

  1533. justice to

  1534. be.

  1535. But instead,

  1536. God took

  1537. our pains

  1538. of death

  1539. upon

  1540. himself.

  1541. Jesus

  1542. is the

  1543. light of

  1544. our hope.

  1545. He did

  1546. all that so

  1547. that God

  1548. our Father

  1549. could promise

  1550. us so

  1551. assuredly

  1552. that when

  1553. we come to

  1554. him as

  1555. believers in

  1556. his son's

  1557. sacrifice,

  1558. forgiven

  1559. our

  1560. sinfulness,

  1561. that we

  1562. have a

  1563. father and

  1564. a family

  1565. to run

  1566. to with

  1567. our sorrows.

  1568. So find

  1569. comfort

  1570. somehow,

  1571. but surely

  1572. in lament,

  1573. in the

  1574. accepting

  1575. gaze of

  1576. your father

  1577. because you

  1578. have unlimited

  1579. grace from

  1580. God to

  1581. lament.

  1582. And we

  1583. can claim

  1584. that grace

  1585. like David

  1586. did in

  1587. verse 1

  1588. of this

  1589. psalm,

  1590. if we

  1591. trust in

  1592. Jesus.

  1593. Jesus.

  1594. If you

  1595. do not

  1596. know Jesus

  1597. yet, I

  1598. encourage you

  1599. to get in

  1600. contact with

  1601. us by

  1602. email or

  1603. phone in

  1604. the comments

  1605. right now

  1606. or hang

  1607. around on

  1608. Zoom and

  1609. ask,

  1610. how can I

  1611. know Jesus?

  1612. The light

  1613. of the

  1614. world is

  1615. your only

  1616. hope.

  1617. But if

  1618. you do

  1619. know Jesus

  1620. and you

  1621. can,

  1622. with him

  1623. you will

  1624. find by

  1625. grace that

  1626. you are

  1627. safe.

  1628. In him

  1629. you'll find

  1630. hope through

  1631. lament.

  1632. So church,

  1633. when you go

  1634. through hard

  1635. and horrifying

  1636. times, fly

  1637. to God.

  1638. Come to

  1639. his light.

  1640. Don't be

  1641. found at the

  1642. podiatrist

  1643. like the

  1644. moth.

  1645. Don't be

  1646. drawn towards

  1647. any other

  1648. light that

  1649. cannot

  1650. deliver you

  1651. from death.

  1652. Run by

  1653. the way

  1654. of lament

  1655. to the

  1656. light of

  1657. God's

  1658. promises that

  1659. shine so

  1660. brightly at

  1661. the cross

  1662. and lament

  1663. to the

  1664. God who

  1665. hears your

  1666. weeping,

  1667. who listens

  1668. to your

  1669. cries,

  1670. who accepts

  1671. your prayer,

  1672. who accepts

  1673. you.

  1674. Lament in

  1675. the light of

  1676. your hope.

  1677. Jesus Christ.
