  1. Well, good morning everyone. We are back after four odd months of lockdown and exile from church.

  2. It's wonderful to be back in church with you. My mind this week went to John Calvin, who in 1538,

  3. on Easter Day, in fact, on 1538, was exiled from Geneva, removed from the pulpit, kicked out of

  4. the town, by the council of the town. And after, I think, a number of years of preaching there,

  5. Calvin's ministry was such that he got up every Sunday, in fact, not just Sunday, but every day

  6. of the week, in fact, and preached through books of the Bible, verse after verse after verse from

  7. the original Greek and Hebrew. He was so, it didn't matter what calendar it was, didn't matter whether

  8. it was Easter Day or, you know, whatever he was up to next, he just preached that passage and just

  9. kept plowing through the text. And so when he was banished on Easter Day, 1538, it was just over

  10. three years later, he was called back to Geneva. He ascended into the pulpit for the first time

  11. and he picked up the very next verse from three years before. Such was his confidence in the Word

  12. of God and the ministry of the Word. Well, after four months of exile, we got Lamentations 4.

  13. And I frankly, as we gather on a day like today, it'd be good if we came up with a somewhat more of a

  14. jovial, uplifting passage, if you like, than Lamentations 4. Lamentations is the darkest book

  15. in the Bible and Lamentations 4 is the darkest chapter of the darkest book of the Bible.

  16. So let's pray and launch in. Father God, this is your Word. It reveals sin. It reveals hope

  17. in the gospel of the Lord Jesus. And so as we gather in all the joy of gathering as your people this day,

  18. help us not to miss this moment. Help us not to bypass this text and what it reveals

  19. about the idols of our hearts. Just we pray, have mercy on us. Amen.

  20. Amen. Recently for our family movie night, we watched the movie, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.

  21. It's a film based on a memoir of the same name. It retells the story of 13-year-old William,

  22. who grew up as a part of a village of farmers in Malawi. Life is very tough. Life is very basic for them.

  23. There's no running water, no electricity. If you could afford it, your transport was a bicycle

  24. and you had one for the family. William briefly goes to school, but his parents, like so many others,

  25. can't afford the education fees. He's a bright kid. He has a keen interest in electronics,

  26. scavenging through rubbish heaps to find bits and pieces to fix people's radios and other bits and

  27. pieces for them. He secretly gets access to the school library after being removed from the school.

  28. He reads a book about wind turbines and the production of electricity.

  29. And in the end of all of that, scavenging through junk heaps, he builds a windmill,

  30. junk, junk, which produces enough power to run a pump to draw water out of a well and water crops.

  31. This in the 2000s, around the 2000s, I forget exactly what the date was, 2001, 2002,

  32. where there was a devastating drought in Malawi.

  33. And the effect of his work saved a village from starvation as a 13-year-old.

  34. This country is devastated by drought. I think probably the most harrowing part of the whole story

  35. is the way that this community just disintegrates during the slow death of starvation and poverty.

  36. Family relationships break down. Law and order disintegrate as people steal from even women and babies

  37. in order to survive.

  38. There is a real sense of hopelessness as people slowly starve to death.

  39. It's a true story.

  40. And as we turn to Lamentations 4, we see a similar scenario of devastation and starvation and the upheaval of a society.

  41. So get your Bibles, open them up for me.

  42. Be grateful if you just need to see this text this morning.

  43. Lamentations 4 casts, if you like, up a variety of mental pictures

  44. that depict the suffering of the final siege of Jerusalem and beyond.

  45. It also lays out for us some of the reasons why the judgment was imposed on Israel.

  46. And it ends with just this whisper.

  47. Just a hint of hope at the end.

  48. And they're the three steps that I'll be taking us through today.

  49. If you've got the St. Paul's app open, the first one is the reversal of fortunes.

  50. Lamentations is a response to the events recorded in 2 Kings 24 and 25.

  51. There's also a shorter version of it in 2 Chronicles 36.

  52. The scene is the fall of Jerusalem.

  53. The global bully at that time was Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonian Empire.

  54. The Babylonian army lay siege to Jerusalem from 588 BC to 587 BC.

  55. About 18 months, they surrounded the city and they slowly, slowly choked the city.

  56. And terrible calamities befell the citizens of Jerusalem, as we see in Lamentations 4.

  57. Some members attempted to escape, run for their lives, and they were cut down in the process.

  58. This is a vivid description of what takes place in this city.

  59. Twice at the beginning of chapter 4, the poet cries out,

  60. Alas!

  61. The NIV translated as how.

  62. It's not quite as desperate as, Alas!

  63. The situation is unrelieved agony.

  64. Where chapter 2 describes the leveling of the physical structures of Jerusalem,

  65. chapter 4 describes the leveling of the people.

  66. Verses 1 and 2 set it up for us.

  67. Have a look for us with me.

  68. How the gold has lost its luster, the fine gold become dull.

  69. The sacred gems are scattered at every street corner.

  70. How the precious children of Zion, once worth their weight in gold,

  71. are now considered as pots of clay, the work of a potter's hands.

  72. Now Psalm 19 tells us that nothing is more precious than gold,

  73. except the word of God.

  74. And the temple of Jerusalem was covered in gold and jewels and stone,

  75. you know, precious jewels.

  76. And now the gold, it says here, has lost its shine.

  77. And the jewels are scattered like pebbles on the streets.

  78. But the primary significance of this description is it's a metaphor

  79. for the people of God themselves.

  80. The precious children of Zion.

  81. As it says in verse 2,

  82. God's precious people are trodden underfoot like broken pottery.

  83. They have become worthless, cast out into the street.

  84. Though once they were worth their weight in gold,

  85. they are now thrown out like worthless pots of clay,

  86. fragile, broken, despised.

  87. So the main message, if you look through,

  88. particularly the first 12 verses or so,

  89. is the, if you like, the devastating reversal of fortunes

  90. at all levels of society.

  91. What is precious is now treated as worthless.

  92. Children who should be nurtured are being starved.

  93. The rich are reduced to the rubbish heap.

  94. Vivid colours are turned black.

  95. Good health has now shrunk and shriveled.

  96. Mothers who should be feeding their children are feeding on them.

  97. Holy men have become dirty and defiled.

  98. The royal protector of life itself is himself trapped in a pit.

  99. Verse 10 is, if you like, the vivid and disturbing image

  100. which takes us, with their own hands,

  101. compassionate women have cooked their own children

  102. who became their food when their people were destroyed,

  103. when my people were destroyed.

  104. Compassionate women.

  105. The author here makes it very clear.

  106. These are not immoral.

  107. These are compassionate women.

  108. Compassionate mothers are now feeding on their own children.

  109. Frankly, I cannot get my mind around that,

  110. let alone the emotions of what it means to have that level of despair

  111. of life itself.

  112. And yet all this points metaphorically to a greater level of despair

  113. that will befall upon all of humanity.

  114. What this passage is telling us is that the whole community from top to bottom

  115. has been turned upside down and shaken out and left shattered

  116. and scattered like trash littering the streets.

  117. It is pure devastation.

  118. I did say this is the darkest chapter of the darkest book of the Bible.

  119. The tragic irony of all of this reversal of fortunes is the end of verse 2

  120. where they are described as the work of the potter's hands.

  121. In the rest of the Bible,

  122. that phrase is a way of describing Israel itself.

  123. As God did for the very first human being in Genesis 2,

  124. so he has done for Israel.

  125. He has fashioned them with the loving care of a potter shaping the clay

  126. in his own image, his precious possession.

  127. It's a way of describing throughout the rest of the Bible

  128. the special covenant relationship

  129. when Israel needed to appeal to God for help

  130. as their merciful father

  131. when they appealed upon his compassion.

  132. For instance, Isaiah 64 verse 8,

    Isaiah 64:8

  133. Yet you, Lord, are our father.

  134. We are the clay.

  135. You are the potter.

  136. We are the work of your hand.

  137. Lord, so do not be angry with us.

  138. Beyond measure.

  139. Lord, do not remember our sins forever.

  140. Oh, look on us, we pray, for we are your people.

  141. The metaphor is normally used to convey the preciousness

  142. of Israel in God's hands.

  143. The tragedy of something so precious being squandered

  144. as though worthless is an echo of Jeremiah's warning

  145. in Jeremiah chapter 2.

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  146. In Jeremiah 2, he lists the amazing privileges

  147. that Israel had enjoyed in their relationship with God.

  148. Sacrificial love, redemption from slavery,

  149. protection in the wilderness,

  150. the gift of the promised land,

  151. a rich inheritance.

  152. Instead, as Jeremiah 2.5 tells us,

  153. they followed worthless idols

  154. and they became worthless themselves.

  155. Why are they now broken pots?

  156. Because of idolatry.

  157. There is a sober warning here

  158. for God's people in any generation.

  159. When we fail to hold on to the preciousness

  160. of what we have in God's word

  161. and what we are in Jesus Christ

  162. and fail to live in accordance with that word

  163. and that status,

  164. then we are in danger of becoming worthless to God.

  165. No matter what our religious pretense is,

  166. no matter what we say with our mouth,

  167. we are in danger of becoming worthless to God,

  168. worthless to His world

  169. and worthless in His mission.

  170. So make no mistake,

  171. Lamentations does give us a language

  172. to express our sorrows and our struggles in life.

  173. It does do that for us.

  174. But it does so much more

  175. than give us language for sorrow.

  176. fundamentally more

  177. than language of sorrow.

  178. It helps us to see the world

  179. and it helps us to see ourselves

  180. through very different lenses.

  181. Lament helps us uncover

  182. the idolatry of our hearts.

  183. Lament mourns the effects

  184. of suffering on a society,

  185. but not simply because of the losses

  186. that we've experienced.

  187. It's a memorial

  188. to the futility

  189. of trusting in anything

  190. but God.

  191. That's lament.

  192. So friends,

  193. think of your life

  194. as a glass of water

  195. with the sediment

  196. at the bottom.

  197. I'm sorry,

  198. I actually put the stuff

  199. in there too late this morning.

  200. I should have put it in last night.

  201. It would have looked like

  202. pure water by then.

  203. Hopefully.

  204. But

  205. forget that.

  206. Imagine it's a,

  207. your life is like

  208. a glass of pure water.

  209. Sediment at the bottom.

  210. Or let me just put it like this,

  211. a good bottle of wine.

  212. If the glass remains stable

  213. and you don't shake the bottle,

  214. the sediment stays at the bottom.

  215. The sediment is not activated.

  216. But bump the glass,

  217. shake it up,

  218. shake the bottle up,

  219. and all of a sudden,

  220. what used to be pure

  221. realizes actually

  222. it wasn't pure

  223. in the first place.

  224. suffering bumps

  225. the glass of our lives.

  226. It stirs up

  227. the sediments

  228. we forgot,

  229. the ones that we tried

  230. to hide,

  231. the fear,

  232. the pride,

  233. the greed,

  234. self-sufficiency,

  235. the things that are lying

  236. dormant,

  237. the idols of the heart,

  238. the pursuit of comfort,

  239. the pursuit of security.

  240. Whatever it is,

  241. it bumps the sediment,

  242. it stirs it up,

  243. it brings it to the surface.

  244. That's what suffering does.

  245. That's what hardship does.

  246. That's what lockdowns do.

  247. That's what GFCs do.

  248. That's what the death

  249. of a loved one does.

  250. That's what droughts do

  251. to farmers.

  252. It bumps the glass

  253. of our lives

  254. and shakes it up

  255. and helps me to see

  256. where is my trust?

  257. What are the idols

  258. in my heart?

  259. What are the idols

  260. in my heart?

  261. In the Bible,

  262. an idol

  263. is simply an object

  264. of trust

  265. that takes the emotional

  266. and practical place

  267. of God in our lives.

  268. Timothy Keller

  269. in his book

  270. Counterfeit Gods

  271. provides a great definition

  272. of idolatry.

  273. He says,

  274. It's not sorrow,

  275. it's despair.

  276. As you think about loss

  277. in your life

  278. or as you consider

  279. a season

  280. when tears and sadness

  281. were a daily experience,

  282. what did you learn

  283. about yourself?

  284. What lesson did you discover

  285. as you stood

  286. over the rubble

  287. of your life

  288. in that moment?

  289. What idols

  290. were surfacing

  291. in your heart

  292. at that moment?

  293. What repentance

  294. was needed

  295. in that moment?

  296. These moments

  297. of sediment

  298. coming to the surface

  299. are a gift

  300. from God

  301. to see

  302. what idols

  303. are in the heart.

  304. And perhaps

  305. you are in that season

  306. of sorrow right now

  307. and my heart bleeds

  308. for you if you are.

  309. Maybe your glass

  310. has been bumped

  311. right now.

  312. What you need

  313. to know

  314. in amongst

  315. everything else

  316. is that there

  317. is an important

  318. lesson to learn.

  319. I want to encourage

  320. you to allow

  321. your grief

  322. to show you

  323. what is surfacing

  324. in your heart.

  325. Let God

  326. uncover it

  327. layer by layer

  328. the things

  329. which you perhaps

  330. place too much

  331. trust in.

  332. In the same way

  333. that pain

  334. can be a platform

  335. for worship,

  336. it can also

  337. be a very

  338. significant

  339. if not

  340. the most

  341. significant

  342. conduit

  343. for spiritual

  344. growth and

  345. repentance.

  346. Lament

  347. mourns

  348. the idols

  349. upon which

  350. we have

  351. placed

  352. too much

  353. hope.

  354. And so

  355. in this way

  356. lament

  357. not only

  358. expresses

  359. sorrow

  360. over loss,

  361. it also

  362. laments

  363. misplaced

  364. trust.

  365. trust.

  366. And so

  367. here we

  368. are,

  369. Jerusalem

  370. is

  371. destroyed,

  372. the society

  373. is destitute

  374. because of

  375. idolatry,

  376. their misplaced

  377. trust led

  378. them into

  379. ruin and

  380. it is a

  381. comprehensible

  382. ruin.

  383. one reason

  384. for the

  385. judgment

  386. falling

  387. upon

  388. Jerusalem

  389. in

  390. Israel

  391. is

  392. given

  393. to us

  394. in

  395. verse

  396. 13.

  397. It's

  398. failed

  399. leadership.

  400. It says

  401. it happened

  402. because of

  403. the sins

  404. of her

  405. prophets

  406. and the

  407. iniquities

  408. of her

  409. priests

  410. who shed

  411. within her

  412. the blood

  413. of the

  414. righteous.

  415. Now it's

  416. clear when

  417. you look at

  418. the book

  419. of Jeremiah

  420. from the

  421. prophet of

  422. Jeremiah who

  423. also wrote

  424. Lamentations

  425. that there

  426. is a

  427. breakdown

  428. in social

  429. morality

  430. throughout the

  431. whole community

  432. of God's

  433. people.

  434. But

  435. the religious

  436. leaders

  437. should have

  438. been doing

  439. the most

  440. to preserve

  441. the nation

  442. in covenantal

  443. faithfulness.

  444. Instead

  445. we are

  446. told here

  447. that they

  448. led the

  449. nation

  450. in corruption

  451. and idolatry.

  452. Again

  453. priests

  454. and the

  455. prophets

  456. the leaders

  457. of God's

  458. people

  459. we see

  460. reversal

  461. of fortunes.

  462. Verse 14

  463. those who

  464. were meant

  465. to be

  466. the eyes

  467. of God

  468. for the

  469. nation

  470. are groping

  471. blindly

  472. through the

  473. streets.

  474. Again

  475. verse 14

  476. those who

  477. are meant

  478. to be

  479. holy

  480. and pure

  481. living

  482. as examples

  483. of covenant

  484. faithfulness

  485. are defiled

  486. filthy

  487. black.

  488. Verse 15

  489. those who

  490. used to

  491. decide the

  492. fate of

  493. the lepers

  494. are now

  495. treated as

  496. lepers

  497. themselves.

  498. Verse 16

  499. those who

  500. lived in

  501. God's

  502. presence

  503. are finding

  504. no respect

  505. on the

  506. earth.

  507. This

  508. is

  509. the

  510. consequence

  511. for 40

  512. years

  513. the prophet

  514. Jeremiah

  515. pleaded

  516. pleaded

  517. with them

  518. to

  519. away

  520. from their

  521. wickedness

  522. to lead

  523. God's

  524. people

  525. in covenant

  526. faithfulness

  527. to the

  528. word of

  529. God.

  530. For 40

  531. years

  532. they

  533. spurned

  534. repentance

  535. and the

  536. grace

  537. that was

  538. they

  539. just

  540. preaching

  541. preaching

  542. so far

  543. from stopping

  544. the national

  545. decline

  546. they

  547. helped

  548. it

  549. they

  550. hastened

  551. it

  552. all that

  553. was left

  554. for them

  555. was the

  556. bleakness

  557. of judgment

  558. by God

  559. and society

  560. itself.

  561. They were

  562. the most

  563. despised

  564. in Jerusalem

  565. on this

  566. day.

  567. There is

  568. something very

  569. significant

  570. here about

  571. the importance

  572. of leadership

  573. and the

  574. importance of

  575. leadership of

  576. our churches

  577. and the

  578. importance of

  579. leadership of

  580. this church.

  581. The leaders

  582. in Jeremiah's

  583. time were

  584. not condemned

  585. for their

  586. inexperience

  587. not condemned

  588. for their

  589. inefficiency

  590. not condemned

  591. for their

  592. personalities

  593. not condemned

  594. for their

  595. ineptitude

  596. they weren't

  597. judged

  598. because their

  599. sermons

  600. were too

  601. long

  602. or because

  603. they weren't

  604. strategic

  605. enough

  606. or because

  607. they didn't

  608. put on the

  609. programs that

  610. the people

  611. wanted

  612. or that

  613. their

  614. personal

  615. care

  616. they weren't

  617. the personal

  618. caregivers

  619. and the

  620. counselors

  621. for everyone

  622. they would

  623. judge

  624. because their

  625. hearts went

  626. after the

  627. wrong gods

  628. sin

  629. was what

  630. characterized

  631. them

  632. their hearts

  633. were bad

  634. and the people

  635. became bad

  636. they starved

  637. the people

  638. of the word

  639. of God

  640. and now

  641. the people

  642. are starving

  643. for food

  644. itself

  645. one thing

  646. led to

  647. another

  648. friends it

  649. is so easy

  650. for Christians

  651. to blame

  652. society

  653. to blame

  654. governments

  655. to blame

  656. social media

  657. for the

  658. decline of

  659. the church

  660. and the

  661. Christian faith

  662. in this

  663. country

  664. and throughout

  665. the west

  666. maybe instead

  667. we should look

  668. to the preachers

  669. and the pastors

  670. for the

  671. moral decline

  672. in our

  673. country

  674. too often

  675. and for

  676. too long

  677. we have

  678. stood in

  679. pulpits

  680. and we have

  681. compromised

  682. the gospel

  683. we have

  684. cared for

  685. ourselves

  686. more than

  687. our flocks

  688. we have

  689. cared for

  690. our retirement

  691. packages

  692. more than

  693. our sermons

  694. our own

  695. peace

  696. rather than

  697. the good

  698. of the

  699. church

  700. or the

  701. advancement

  702. of God

  703. and his

  704. mission

  705. without

  706. a vital

  707. relationship

  708. with Christ

  709. and communing

  710. with Christ

  711. how can we

  712. expect

  713. the members

  714. of our

  715. church

  716. to be any

  717. different

  718. apathy

  719. breeds

  720. apathy

  721. sin

  722. breeds

  723. sin

  724. lack

  725. of

  726. discipleship

  727. breeds

  728. lack

  729. of

  730. discipleship

  731. if your

  732. pastors

  733. and leaders

  734. are not

  735. seeing much

  736. growth in

  737. faith in

  738. Jesus

  739. Christ

  740. and communing

  741. with God

  742. in his

  743. word

  744. how on

  745. earth

  746. will you

  747. ever do

  748. it

  749. believe it

  750. or not

  751. for

  752. especially

  753. for those

  754. of us

  755. in the

  756. individualistic

  757. independent

  758. west

  759. with that

  760. mindset

  761. believe it

  762. or not

  763. you

  764. are

  765. dependent

  766. upon your

  767. pastors

  768. and your

  769. leaders

  770. you may

  771. have access

  772. to the

  773. word of

  774. God

  775. but our

  776. job is a

  777. prophetic

  778. access to

  779. the word

  780. of God

  781. you are

  782. dependent

  783. upon us

  784. and where

  785. we go

  786. so you

  787. go

  788. God's

  789. judgment

  790. will fall

  791. hard on

  792. pastors who

  793. preach

  794. falsehood

  795. who give

  796. permission

  797. for sin

  798. to reign

  799. in the

  800. church

  801. who are

  802. more caught

  803. up in their

  804. social media

  805. profiles and

  806. the greatness

  807. of God

  808. who are more

  809. interested in

  810. the approval

  811. of people

  812. than the

  813. approval of

  814. God

  815. who submit

  816. to the

  817. worldview

  818. and ethics

  819. of society

  820. rather than

  821. submit to

  822. the word

  823. of God

  824. when we

  825. skew the

  826. scriptures to

  827. make it fit

  828. with our

  829. idols

  830. our opinions

  831. our passions

  832. our desires

  833. we kill

  834. God's

  835. sheep

  836. and God

  837. will not

  838. stand for

  839. it

  840. we might

  841. be the

  842. shepherds

  843. but he

  844. is the

  845. chief

  846. shepherd

  847. and he

  848. will fire

  849. his

  850. pastors

  851. and so

  852. may God

  853. forgive me

  854. for in

  855. any ways

  856. in which I

  857. have been

  858. guilty of

  859. these things

  860. and may

  861. he deliver

  862. you

  863. from following

  864. me into

  865. any way

  866. of unrighteousness

  867. and apathy

  868. but there's

  869. one more

  870. leader here

  871. in this

  872. text

  873. that has

  874. failed

  875. it's not

  876. just the

  877. priests

  878. and the

  879. prophets

  880. it's also

  881. the king

  882. it's

  883. verse 20

  884. stark

  885. the

  886. Lord's

  887. anointed

  888. our

  889. very

  890. life

  891. breath

  892. was caught

  893. in their

  894. traps

  895. we thought

  896. that under

  897. his shadow

  898. we would

  899. live

  900. among the

  901. nations

  902. this is

  903. referring here

  904. to king

  905. Zedekiah

  906. the lord's

  907. anointed

  908. direct line

  909. from great

  910. king

  911. David

  912. the one

  913. to lead

  914. God's

  915. people

  916. with the

  917. prophets

  918. and the

  919. priests

  920. in covenant

  921. faithfulness

  922. Zedekiah

  923. was meant

  924. to rule

  925. the nation

  926. with loving

  927. mercy

  928. instead

  929. Zedekiah

  930. had

  931. established

  932. unholy

  933. alliances

  934. with

  935. godless

  936. nations

  937. like

  938. Egypt

  939. hoping

  940. that

  941. Egypt

  942. would

  943. come

  944. to

  945. their

  946. rescue

  947. in this

  948. moment

  949. and they

  950. look

  951. for the

  952. nations

  953. to come

  954. and they

  955. don't

  956. come

  957. the

  958. idolatry

  959. of

  960. Zedekiah

  961. the

  962. hope

  963. of

  964. Zedekiah

  965. was in

  966. greater

  967. nations

  968. than

  969. Babylon

  970. and in

  971. this

  972. moment

  973. they

  974. were

  975. gone

  976. false

  977. hope

  978. he

  979. was a

  980. weak

  981. and a

  982. treacherous

  983. king

  984. who

  985. condoned

  986. the

  987. religious

  988. corruption

  989. and the

  990. moral

  991. degradation

  992. of

  993. Israel

  994. he

  995. ignored

  996. the

  997. advice

  998. of

  999. God's

  1000. prophet

  1001. Jeremiah

  1002. again

  1003. and again

  1004. and again

  1005. and again

  1006. he was

  1007. meant to be

  1008. the hope

  1009. of Israel

  1010. the very

  1011. life breath

  1012. in verse

  1013. 20

  1014. instead

  1015. of bringing

  1016. life

  1017. to the

  1018. city

  1019. he ran

  1020. for his

  1021. life

  1022. and he

  1023. is caught

  1024. he's

  1025. blinded

  1026. he's

  1027. imprisoned

  1028. and all

  1029. of his

  1030. sons

  1031. are killed

  1032. in front

  1033. of him

  1034. see the

  1035. significance

  1036. of that

  1037. the line

  1038. of David

  1039. is ended

  1040. and so

  1041. verse 20

  1042. expresses the

  1043. utter

  1044. despair

  1045. of Israel

  1046. prophet

  1047. priest

  1048. king

  1049. they've

  1050. all

  1051. failed

  1052. they've

  1053. all

  1054. failed

  1055. all

  1056. three

  1057. branches

  1058. of their

  1059. leadership

  1060. system

  1061. have

  1062. failed

  1063. God

  1064. gave

  1065. his

  1066. people

  1067. prophet

  1068. priests

  1069. and kings

  1070. to lead

  1071. them

  1072. both

  1073. spiritually

  1074. and politically

  1075. they all

  1076. failed

  1077. and so

  1078. is there

  1079. any hope

  1080. is there

  1081. any hope

  1082. and if you

  1083. read this

  1084. text you go

  1085. there is no

  1086. hope for

  1087. Israel

  1088. it's all

  1089. done

  1090. it's

  1091. dusted

  1092. it's

  1093. gone

  1094. except

  1095. in the

  1096. very

  1097. last

  1098. verse

  1099. there is

  1100. this

  1101. whisper

  1102. of hope

  1103. this

  1104. glimmer

  1105. of hope

  1106. what we

  1107. see here

  1108. is a

  1109. surprising

  1110. leadership

  1111. and a

  1112. great

  1113. reversal

  1114. I always

  1115. thought chapter

  1116. three was the

  1117. most hopeful

  1118. bit of

  1119. lamentations

  1120. but this is

  1121. actually the

  1122. most hopeful

  1123. bit

  1124. your punishment

  1125. will end

  1126. daughter

  1127. Zion

  1128. the story

  1129. does not

  1130. end in

  1131. this moment

  1132. for Israel

  1133. there is

  1134. another

  1135. reversal

  1136. to come

  1137. in mocking

  1138. derision

  1139. the poet

  1140. here

  1141. tells

  1142. nearby

  1143. pagans

  1144. Edom

  1145. read the

  1146. book of

  1147. Obadiah

  1148. and you

  1149. see what

  1150. Edom did

  1151. in this

  1152. moment

  1153. to Jerusalem

  1154. as people

  1155. tried to

  1156. flee the

  1157. city

  1158. the people

  1159. of Edom

  1160. were cutting

  1161. them down

  1162. in the

  1163. crossroads

  1164. killing

  1165. them by

  1166. the sword

  1167. as they

  1168. tried to

  1169. get out

  1170. of there

  1171. and coming

  1172. in the

  1173. back door

  1174. and trying

  1175. to loot

  1176. what they

  1177. could

  1178. out of

  1179. Jerusalem

  1180. and Israel

  1181. at the

  1182. same time

  1183. these are

  1184. their

  1185. half

  1186. brothers

  1187. and

  1188. sisters

  1189. and the

  1190. poet

  1191. says here

  1192. you

  1193. Edom

  1194. successful

  1195. at the

  1196. moment

  1197. enjoy

  1198. it

  1199. delight

  1200. in it

  1201. but the

  1202. reversal is

  1203. coming for

  1204. you

  1205. your turn

  1206. will come

  1207. God's

  1208. justice

  1209. will be

  1210. imposed

  1211. on them

  1212. as well

  1213. as on

  1214. Israel

  1215. and one

  1216. day

  1217. God's

  1218. people

  1219. though

  1220. afflicted

  1221. now

  1222. will put

  1223. behind

  1224. them

  1225. every

  1226. single

  1227. trace

  1228. of the

  1229. exile

  1230. and you

  1231. know what's

  1232. amazing

  1233. here

  1234. what's

  1235. amazing

  1236. is it's

  1237. the Lord's

  1238. anointed

  1239. is the

  1240. one who

  1241. will give

  1242. them rest

  1243. who will

  1244. restore

  1245. everything

  1246. the one

  1247. who at

  1248. the moment

  1249. has been

  1250. imprisoned

  1251. blinded

  1252. put into

  1253. slavery

  1254. captured

  1255. is the

  1256. one who

  1257. will bring

  1258. them rest

  1259. and healing

  1260. and hope

  1261. and restoration

  1262. in Luke

  1263. 4

  1264. Jesus

  1265. turns up

  1266. to the

  1267. synagogue

  1268. in Nazareth

  1269. he grabs

  1270. the portion

  1271. of the

  1272. scroll of

  1273. Isaiah

  1274. and he

  1275. reads this

  1276. the spirit

  1277. of the

  1278. Lord is

  1279. on me

  1280. because he

  1281. has anointed

  1282. me

  1283. anointed

  1284. me to

  1285. proclaim

  1286. good news

  1287. to the

  1288. poor

  1289. he has

  1290. sent me

  1291. to proclaim

  1292. freedom

  1293. for the

  1294. prisoners

  1295. recovery

  1296. of sight

  1297. to the

  1298. blind

  1299. set the

  1300. oppressed

  1301. free

  1302. to proclaim

  1303. the year

  1304. of the

  1305. Lord's

  1306. favour

  1307. you see

  1308. ultimately

  1309. what Jeremiah

  1310. was looking

  1311. for here

  1312. was the

  1313. kind of

  1314. leadership

  1315. that could

  1316. only be

  1317. found in

  1318. Jesus

  1319. Christ

  1320. he is

  1321. the prophet

  1322. the priest

  1323. and the

  1324. king

  1325. Jesus

  1326. Christ

  1327. is the

  1328. true

  1329. prophet

  1330. he not

  1331. only speaks

  1332. the word

  1333. of God

  1334. but he

  1335. is the

  1336. word

  1337. of God

  1338. that is

  1339. he reveals

  1340. to us

  1341. the word

  1342. of the

  1343. will

  1344. of God

  1345. the purpose

  1346. of God

  1347. the salvation

  1348. of God

  1349. he's not

  1350. only the

  1351. holy priest

  1352. who is

  1353. blameless

  1354. before God

  1355. and man

  1356. but able

  1357. and therefore

  1358. able to

  1359. mediate

  1360. between God

  1361. and man

  1362. he is

  1363. himself

  1364. the perfect

  1365. sacrifice

  1366. he does

  1367. not

  1368. he is

  1369. the perfect

  1370. sacrifice

  1371. in that

  1372. he satisfies

  1373. the divine

  1374. justice

  1375. of God

  1376. for our

  1377. sin

  1378. he went

  1379. to the

  1380. cross

  1381. he died

  1382. under

  1383. the wrath

  1384. the fierce

  1385. wrath

  1386. of God

  1387. and in

  1388. so doing

  1389. what he

  1390. does

  1391. is he

  1392. turns

  1393. the anger

  1394. of God

  1395. away

  1396. from us

  1397. 2 Corinthians

  1398. tells us

  1399. he who

  1400. was rich

  1401. beyond

  1402. imagination

  1403. became

  1404. poor

  1405. in the

  1406. dust

  1407. destitute

  1408. so that

  1409. we

  1410. who are

  1411. in the

  1412. dust

  1413. and destitute

  1414. because of

  1415. our

  1416. sinfulness

  1417. because of

  1418. our

  1419. idolatry

  1420. we are

  1421. deserving

  1422. of God's

  1423. judgment

  1424. so that

  1425. we

  1426. might become

  1427. spiritually

  1428. rich

  1429. what a

  1430. reversal

  1431. we get

  1432. a glimpse

  1433. of this

  1434. in the

  1435. very

  1436. first

  1437. Hebrew

  1438. word

  1439. in the

  1440. last

  1441. verse

  1442. of

  1443. Lamentations

  1444. 4

  1445. it is

  1446. a word

  1447. that is

  1448. best

  1449. translated

  1450. it

  1451. is

  1452. finished

  1453. it

  1454. is

  1455. your

  1456. exile

  1457. is

  1458. over

  1459. it

  1460. is

  1461. finished

  1462. the

  1463. last

  1464. thing

  1465. that

  1466. Jesus

  1467. breathes

  1468. the

  1469. last

  1470. thing

  1471. he

  1472. says

  1473. is

  1474. he

  1475. breathes

  1476. his

  1477. last

  1478. on

  1479. the

  1480. cross

  1481. in

  1482. John

  1483. 19

  1484. 30

  1485. it

  1486. is

  1487. finished

  1488. one of

  1489. the

  1490. wonderful

  1491. and great

  1492. paradoxes

  1493. of history

  1494. is that

  1495. here is

  1496. the

  1497. helpless

  1498. powerless

  1499. broken

  1500. devastated

  1501. Jesus

  1502. dying

  1503. on the

  1504. cross

  1505. and his

  1506. very last

  1507. words

  1508. are

  1509. I did

  1510. it

  1511. I've

  1512. triumphed

  1513. I've

  1514. accomplished

  1515. it

  1516. and what

  1517. he accomplished

  1518. is described

  1519. for us a

  1520. little later

  1521. in the

  1522. New

  1523. Testament

  1524. 1

  1525. Peter

  1526. 3

  1527. 18

  1528. Christ

  1529. suffered

  1530. once for

  1531. sins

  1532. the

  1533. righteous

  1534. for the

  1535. unrighteous

  1536. to bring

  1537. you to

  1538. God

  1539. it's a

  1540. surprising

  1541. moment of

  1542. leadership

  1543. by the

  1544. flawless

  1545. prophet

  1546. the

  1547. flawless

  1548. priest

  1549. the

  1550. flawless

  1551. king

  1552. that

  1553. produces

  1554. the

  1555. great

  1556. reversal

  1557. there

  1558. is an

  1559. infinite

  1560. chasm

  1561. between

  1562. God

  1563. and us

  1564. and Jesus

  1565. has done

  1566. everything

  1567. that's

  1568. required

  1569. he has

  1570. paid

  1571. every

  1572. debt

  1573. we owe

  1574. he has

  1575. dealt

  1576. with

  1577. every

  1578. bit of

  1579. shame

  1580. every

  1581. bit of

  1582. guilt

  1583. every

  1584. bit

  1585. of

  1586. sin

  1587. he has

  1588. accomplished

  1589. it all

  1590. there is

  1591. nothing

  1592. more

  1593. that we

  1594. must do

  1595. to bridge

  1596. the gap

  1597. between

  1598. us

  1599. and God

  1600. Jesus

  1601. last

  1602. word

  1603. was

  1604. I've

  1605. done

  1606. everything

  1607. necessary

  1608. to bring

  1609. you to

  1610. salvation

  1611. I've

  1612. thirsted

  1613. so that

  1614. you might

  1615. be satisfied

  1616. I've been

  1617. trapped

  1618. so that

  1619. you can

  1620. be set

  1621. free

  1622. I've

  1623. been

  1624. emptied

  1625. that

  1626. you

  1627. might

  1628. be

  1629. filled

  1630. I've

  1631. been

  1632. covered

  1633. with

  1634. your

  1635. dust

  1636. and

  1637. filth

  1638. so

  1639. that

  1640. you

  1641. might

  1642. be

  1643. pure

  1644. I've

  1645. been

  1646. killed

  1647. and

  1648. devastated

  1649. and

  1650. destroyed

  1651. that

  1652. you

  1653. might

  1654. live

  1655. forever

  1656. seen

  1657. could

  1658. be

  1659. devastated

  1660. tomorrow

  1661. by

  1662. 40

  1663. millimetres

  1664. of

  1665. rain

  1666. and

  1667. they

  1668. can't

  1669. even

  1670. get

  1671. the

  1672. headers

  1673. in

  1674. to

  1675. get

  1676. it

  1677. off

  1678. just

  1679. like

  1680. that

  1681. the

  1682. hope

  1683. the

  1684. things

  1685. that we

  1686. look

  1687. to

  1688. will

  1689. abandon

  1690. us

  1691. on

  1692. the

  1693. day

  1694. of

  1695. despair

  1696. allow

  1697. the

  1698. hard

  1699. times

  1700. to

  1701. show

  1702. you

  1703. where

  1704. your

  1705. heart

  1706. is

  1707. where

  1708. your

  1709. trust

  1710. is

  1711. but

  1712. also

  1713. that's

  1714. the

  1715. first

  1716. thing

  1717. second

  1718. thing

  1719. we

  1720. must

  1721. as

  1722. the

  1723. people

  1724. of

  1725. God

  1726. we

  1727. must

  1728. lament

  1729. the

  1730. decline

  1731. of

  1732. this

  1733. church

  1734. in

  1735. this

  1736. country

  1737. the

  1738. decline

  1739. of

  1740. the

  1741. morality

  1742. and

  1743. the

  1744. rejection

  1745. of

  1746. the

  1747. word

  1748. of

  1749. God

  1750. in

  1751. our

  1752. society

  1753. and

  1754. we

  1755. must

  1756. take

  1757. responsibility

  1758. for

  1759. it

  1760. we

  1761. must

  1762. lament

  1763. the

  1764. biblical

  1765. illiteracy

  1766. in the

  1767. church

  1768. and in

  1769. society

  1770. we

  1771. must

  1772. lament

  1773. it

  1774. we're

  1775. responsible

  1776. for

  1777. it

  1778. and

  1779. Edom

  1780. might

  1781. be

  1782. smiling

  1783. right

  1784. now

  1785. but

  1786. there

  1787. is

  1788. a

  1789. great

  1790. and

  1791. eternal

  1792. tragedy

  1793. around

  1794. the

  1795. corner

  1796. and

  1797. what

  1798. part

  1799. have

  1800. we

  1801. played

  1802. in

  1803. that

  1804. anyone

  1805. who

  1806. does

  1807. not

  1808. take

  1809. refuge

  1810. in

  1811. God's

  1812. anointed

  1813. will

  1814. face

  1815. the

  1816. judgment

  1817. of

  1818. God

  1819. and

  1820. they

  1821. will

  1822. do

  1823. so

  1824. alone

  1825. and

  1826. that

  1827. is

  1828. a

  1829. prospect

  1830. more

  1831. terrible

  1832. than

  1833. slow

  1834. death

  1835. by

  1836. starvation

  1837. it

  1838. will

  1839. never

  1840. end

  1841. it

  1842. will

  1843. never

  1844. end

  1845. you

  1846. will

  1847. never

  1848. reach

  1849. the

  1850. satisfaction

  1851. of

  1852. death

  1853. the

  1854. hope

  1855. of

  1856. death

  1857. and

  1858. so

  1859. I

  1860. want

  1861. to

  1862. ask

  1863. you

  1864. church

  1865. in

  1866. all

  1867. seriousness

  1868. if

  1869. we

  1870. are

  1871. not

  1872. lamenting

  1873. this

  1874. is

  1875. the

  1876. question

  1877. I

  1878. want

  1879. to

  1880. leave

  1881. you

  1882. with

  1883. if

  1884. we

  1885. if

  1886. you

  1887. are

  1888. not

  1889. lamenting

  1890. the

  1891. degradation

  1892. in

  1893. church

  1894. and

  1895. in

  1896. society

  1897. if

  1898. it

  1899. does

  1900. not

  1901. break

  1902. your

  1903. heart

  1904. and

  1905. the

  1906. judgment

  1907. of

  1908. God

  1909. that

  1910. is

  1911. coming

  1912. what

  1913. does

  1914. it

  1915. say

  1916. about

  1917. the

  1918. vitality

  1919. of

  1920. your

  1921. relationship

  1922. with

  1923. Christ

  1924. and

  1925. to

  1926. have

  1927. known

  1928. in

  1929. gin

  1930. so

  1931. you

  1932. well
