  1. All right, change gears, let's jump into Lamentations 5.

  2. And it is a significant change of gears.

  3. I remember this week particularly well.

  4. It was 2003.

  5. A few weeks earlier, from this particular day,

  6. a young couple at church had given birth to their first child, a girl.

  7. And this child, they were told, had a heart problem.

  8. It was a significant heart problem that the doctors said

  9. they were not able to resolve and the child would die.

  10. It was a very emotional time.

  11. Very emotional time.

  12. On the day that she died,

  13. I walked into a hospital waiting room at Westmead Hospital

  14. to support another young couple

  15. whose doctors were about to update them

  16. on the well-being of their first child.

  17. It was a couple who I had married a few years earlier.

  18. They were not Christians.

  19. This little child was also born with a heart condition.

  20. And at six months of age,

  21. they decided to do surgery, to rectify it.

  22. They said it would be a pretty straightforward procedure.

  23. It went wrong.

  24. It went horribly wrong.

  25. And I sat with this couple as this significant medical team

  26. told them that they were doing all that they could,

  27. but their little boy at this stage had a 50-50 chance of survival.

  28. In that moment of an outpouring of grief,

  29. the mum turned to me and asked me two things.

  30. Steve, why is God doing this to us?

  31. And secondly, can you pray for us right now?

  32. The surgeon agreed that was a good idea.

  33. Any help would be appreciated in this moment.

  34. And if prayers are comfort for you, then let's do that.

  35. And they all bowed their heads.

  36. On the way home from the hospital,

  37. I cried out to God in that moment from deep anguish.

  38. So much so I had to, in fact, pull the car over

  39. to the side of the road

  40. because the windscreen wipers weren't removing the water

  41. that was in front of me.

  42. It was just my tears made everything blurry.

  43. I sat on the side of the road and I sobbed

  44. and I pleaded with God.

  45. I pleaded with him to save a life.

  46. It was not just a simple matter of sorrow.

  47. It was just desperation.

  48. God intervened.

  49. God intervened.

  50. God intervened.

  51. Lamentations is a book

  52. that gets us ready for moments like that.

  53. When the phone rings

  54. and you receive the worst possible news

  55. you could receive.

  56. That's what Lamentations does for us.

  57. As one person,

  58. I heard them say in a moment of terrible hardship

  59. as their loved one was dying slowly,

  60. someone with deep Christian faith,

  61. they said,

  62. you've got to have the roof up

  63. if you want shelter in the storm.

  64. No good trying to put it up in the storm.

  65. You've got to have it up

  66. if you want shelter in the storm.

  67. And Lamentations puts the roof on

  68. before the storm hits.

  69. Gets us ready for those storms of life.

  70. In a world that is as broken as our world is,

  71. ravaged by sin as our world is,

  72. we are frankly naive

  73. if we do not make preparation for loss,

  74. for heartbreak, for tragedy.

  75. It's the case of when,

  76. not if.

  77. So if you've just tuned in to us

  78. at St. Paul's here for the first time,

  79. we've been journeying through this topic of lament.

  80. Lament is how we bring our sorrow to God.

  81. And we've been discovering a whole heap about lament

  82. and in this book of Lamentations.

  83. It's a collection of five poems of lament

  84. by the prophet Jeremiah.

  85. And we're up to the fifth lament.

  86. The whole chapter, in fact,

  87. is a prayer.

  88. And there are three main elements to this prayer.

  89. This prayer is broken into three main elements.

  90. It's got three structures.

  91. And each of these elements is, if you like,

  92. a, let's just take the analogy of the roof thing.

  93. Each of these three main elements

  94. are three support beams

  95. that hold the roof up

  96. for when the storm hits.

  97. The first one, if you go to your St. Paul's app,

  98. you'll see the three-point outline there.

  99. It's just three beams.

  100. The first support beam

  101. is a biblical understanding of sin

  102. and its consequences for everything in this world.

  103. It touches everything.

  104. Sin ruins everything.

  105. Now, Lamentations is written in response

  106. to the devastating siege and destruction of Jerusalem

  107. by the Babylonian Empire in 587 BC.

  108. And we know from earlier bits of Lamentations

  109. that this is a deserved suffering.

  110. God has judged his people

  111. for generation after generation of rebellion.

  112. They spurned God's love.

  113. They rejected his word.

  114. They persecuted his prophets.

  115. And chapter five, as we launch into that,

  116. it's the aftermath of the destruction.

  117. It's like the tornado has gone through

  118. and we are now sitting in the rubble.

  119. This is the weeks and the months that followed,

  120. the siege, the destruction,

  121. the deportation of the elite to Babylon.

  122. And so chapter five is a prayer

  123. from the top of the rubble of Jerusalem.

  124. Jeremiah sits there

  125. as the jackals surround and feed on the human corpses.

  126. It's a moment where the atrocities continue.

  127. There's no UN peacekeeping force here.

  128. So this chapter is intensely human.

  129. These chapters are so much more,

  130. sorry, they are as much about the experience of suffering

  131. as they are about the cause of the suffering.

  132. And so what you see right through Lamentations

  133. is this struggle between the head and the heart

  134. or the theological acceptance of it

  135. and the moral outrage of it at the same time.

  136. It's this emotions and logic going together

  137. all the way through Lamentations.

  138. That's chapter five.

  139. In other words, if we go through Lamentations

  140. and don't feel anything,

  141. we've missed it.

  142. Go back and read it again.

  143. Verse one is a simple plea for Yahweh,

  144. their covenant making God to,

  145. their promise keeping God to simply look and see.

  146. Do not turn your face away.

  147. Look at our disgrace.

  148. Now this is simply more than asking God not to forget.

  149. This is a plea for him to intervene

  150. based on his love and his promises.

  151. And the beginning of chapter two

  152. is a, if you like, not so subtle reminder

  153. to God of his promises.

  154. And it's just there in the word inheritance.

  155. You see, an inheritance is,

  156. it's a gift.

  157. It's not earned.

  158. The land, the city, the temple,

  159. it was all a gift from God.

  160. All that Israel had,

  161. all that they were was God's gift to them.

  162. That's how they came to be here in the first place,

  163. because of God's gift.

  164. It wasn't because they were lovely

  165. that God loved them

  166. and made him his special people.

  167. There was nothing lovely about them,

  168. nothing special about them in the beginning.

  169. And there's nothing lovely about them now.

  170. God had made them his people.

  171. He loved the unlovely.

  172. He loved the small, the weak, the insignificant.

  173. God made them something.

  174. He gave them this inheritance.

  175. And so Jeremiah calls,

  176. with the people left in the rubble,

  177. calls on God not to turn away,

  178. but to look and see your inheritance.

  179. Look at the devastation that lingers on.

  180. And as you go through the first section,

  181. you just see the somber residing of Jerusalem's degradation,

  182. their occupation, abandonment, bereavement, thirst,

  183. their poverty, the inflation, the invasion,

  184. the famine, the despondency, the slavery,

  185. the exposure, the rape, the humiliation, the exhaustion.

  186. Why does this happen?

  187. Verse 7,

  188. Our ancestors sinned and are no more,

  189. and we bear their punishment.

  190. God had given them good gifts.

  191. He had given them an inheritance.

  192. He had saved them.

  193. And yet generation after generation,

  194. they had spurned his goodness.

  195. They had ignored his word.

  196. And so God's judgment came upon his people

  197. for their constant rejection.

  198. But the current generation are not innocent, though.

  199. It's not like they go,

  200. well, you know, we're suffering because of those guys.

  201. Verse 16,

  202. The crown has fallen from our head.

  203. Woe to us,

  204. for we have sinned.

  205. Another way of stating that is,

  206. if only we had never sinned.

  207. They'd taken responsibility.

  208. Sin was the reason Jerusalem had fallen.

  209. God's people had rejected their God again and again.

  210. But this current generation had done it too.

  211. You see,

  212. Jeremiah's prophecy of this destruction of Jerusalem

  213. could not have been any clearer.

  214. Jeremiah 19 lays out the details of the destruction of Jerusalem

  215. because of the sin and the idolatry of the people.

  216. And what happens to Jeremiah as he comes in,

  217. brings the word of God to the people of Judah in these days,

  218. for like four decades leading up to this moment,

  219. what happens?

  220. They beat him.

  221. They put him into prison.

  222. Later,

  223. he's thrown into a sewer.

  224. With the expectation,

  225. he will die.

  226. The people of Jerusalem had turned their backs on God's word

  227. and his prophets again and again.

  228. They arrogantly and tragically forgot.

  229. Everything that they had was a good gift from God.

  230. Everything.

  231. Everything.

  232. Everything.

  233. Everything.

  234. Everything.

  235. Everything.

  236. Everything.

  237. So that's the first beam.

  238. First beam to remember when the storms of life hit,

  239. the Bible makes it absolutely clear that none of us are innocent.

  240. None of us.

  241. Romans 3 tells us that all have gone our own way.

  242. All of us have rejected God.

  243. We have all sinned.

  244. And everything wrong in this world is connected to that.

  245. None of us are innocent.

  246. God created a good world.

  247. He designed humanity to live in obedience to him

  248. and discover joy and freedom forever.

  249. And when the first people rebelled against God,

  250. it broke everything.

  251. Everything wrong in this world is a consequence of sin,

  252. either directly or indirectly.

  253. And so the first beam is crucial here.

  254. A Christian therefore echoes the words of the tax collector in Luke 18,

    Luke 18:13

  255. verse 13,

  256. who beats his chest and says,

  257. Lord, have mercy on me,

  258. the sinner,

  259. the model sinner.

  260. The Christian echoes the Lord's prayer from the heart.

  261. Forgive me my sin

  262. as I forgive the sins of others.

  263. The Christian sees their sin,

  264. however much they have been sinned against.

  265. It's so important to have a healthy theology of sin.

  266. And what generations of rebellion against God has done to this world.

  267. If we do not,

  268. we tend to put our head in a bucket of sand,

  269. declare that we are basically good,

  270. and that God owes me a trouble-free life.

  271. That's naivety.

  272. God owes us nothing.

  273. It is secular humanism that says,

  274. my life should be upward and advancing,

  275. and everything works for my good.

  276. If Lockie and Rosie go into next Saturday,

  277. make promises to one another,

  278. and just say,

  279. in the good and the bad,

  280. or leave out the bad,

  281. just the good,

  282. take everything negative out,

  283. they will not have the resources to endure in marriage.

  284. Every sorrow,

  285. every tear,

  286. all pain,

  287. every loss,

  288. gives evidence

  289. of the brokenness in our world

  290. caused by sin.

  291. Something is terribly wrong with our world,

  292. every culture,

  293. and inside of every single one of us.

  294. And it's crucial that we understand

  295. that God does not owe us an inheritance.

  296. He does not owe us a trouble-freed life.

  297. Secondly,

  298. however,

  299. what's amazing here,

  300. after acknowledging sin

  301. and recounting 18 verses

  302. of consequences of sin,

  303. verse 18 starts with the word,

  304. not in the NIV,

  305. but it starts with the word,

  306. but,

  307. but,

  308. you've got to love the word,

  309. but,

  310. and this,

  311. verse 19 is in fact the center point

  312. of this whole chapter.

  313. And it's the second support beam

  314. of the roof of our lives

  315. when the storms of life hit.

  316. It's verse 19,

  317. you,

  318. Lord,

  319. or,

  320. but you,

  321. Lord,

  322. reign forever.

  323. your throne endures

  324. from generation to generation.

  325. God is in control.

  326. Sin and its consequences

  327. are not the end of the story.

  328. That's the big but.

  329. Everything in this chapter,

  330. in this book,

  331. circles around verse 19.

  332. This is the spiritual reorientation for Judah.

  333. You see,

  334. God's stern discipline of Judah

  335. has awakened in them

  336. a sense of their sinfulness

  337. and their worthlessness

  338. and their helplessness.

  339. It has broken her pride

  340. and humbled her.

  341. It is very,

  342. you know,

  343. it makes sense

  344. that they should be humbled.

  345. They're sitting on the rubble

  346. of Jerusalem.

  347. And yet for sometimes,

  348. it's not so easy for us to go there.

  349. Our lives can be a rumble.

  350. And yet we still wave the fist to God.

  351. Someone owes me.

  352. Sometimes suffering

  353. drives us further into pride.

  354. Self-assurance,

  355. self-confidence.

  356. But here it's humbledom.

  357. And it's only from this humble position

  358. that Judah invokes God's compassion

  359. and his grace.

  360. Jeremiah confesses

  361. that everything works

  362. according to the decree

  363. and the purpose of the creator.

  364. Every event in life

  365. moves towards the fulfillment

  366. of his plans,

  367. the plans that he ordains,

  368. including the destruction

  369. of Jerusalem under his judgment.

  370. The covenant God,

  371. in his sovereign rule,

  372. has destroyed his city,

  373. his temple,

  374. his people

  375. through the conquest

  376. of his Babylonians.

  377. Babylon,

  378. the most powerful empire

  379. in the world,

  380. was simply doing his bidding.

  381. Now we get the same thinking

  382. if you fast forward

  383. to Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  384. where we are told

  385. the sin of Pilate,

  386. the sin of the Roman soldiers,

  387. the sin of the chief priests,

  388. and the sin of the people

  389. conspired together

  390. to crucify Jesus.

  391. And then we are told

  392. in Acts 4 verse 28,

    Acts 4:28

  393. they did what your power

  394. and will

  395. had decided beforehand

  396. should happen.

  397. Now they're responsible

  398. for their sin.

  399. It's a terrible thing

  400. for which God

  401. will hold them accountable,

  402. but they cannot stop

  403. God being God.

  404. Just think about that

  405. for a moment.

  406. You must be

  407. very,

  408. very,

  409. very powerful

  410. to have your enemies

  411. fulfill your plans

  412. while working against you.

  413. That's incomprehensible

  414. to me.

  415. I had to even think

  416. about that sentence

  417. several times.

  418. And yet this is how

  419. the Bible tells us

  420. to think about God

  421. and his sovereign rule

  422. over all things.

  423. All else may change

  424. and will change,

  425. but God does not.

  426. God's rule

  427. over all things

  428. as opposed

  429. to what

  430. we might call

  431. chance

  432. or fate

  433. or luck

  434. in our society.

  435. Everything

  436. may fluctuate,

  437. our times

  438. and our circumstances

  439. may grow harder

  440. and more difficult,

  441. but God is in control

  442. of the situation.

  443. The presence

  444. of pain,

  445. no matter

  446. how strong,

  447. does not negate

  448. the plan of God.

  449. No matter

  450. how much it seems

  451. that the world

  452. is collecting around us,

  453. God is on his throne

  454. and he is always

  455. fulfilling his plans.

  456. Now it is essential

  457. that we do not

  458. stop there

  459. with just

  460. those two beams.

  461. If we do,

  462. what happens

  463. is

  464. we slip

  465. into a

  466. nothing more

  467. than a fatalism.

  468. In actual fact,

  469. what we do

  470. is we slip

  471. into the theology

  472. of Islam

  473. if we just

  474. stop there?

  475. It's the will

  476. of Allah.

  477. Nothing you

  478. can do about it.

  479. We are just

  480. mere pawns

  481. in his plans.

  482. What's the difference

  483. between,

  484. amongst many

  485. other things,

  486. between Islam

  487. and Christianity?

  488. Beam number

  489. three.

  490. Beam number

  491. three.

  492. relationship.

  493. God

  494. is

  495. good.

  496. He's beam

  497. number

  498. three.

  499. God

  500. comes to us

  501. in our

  502. suffering.

  503. He's not

  504. Aristotle's

  505. unmoved

  506. mover

  507. at a distance.

  508. He comes

  509. to us

  510. in our

  511. suffering

  512. and that's

  513. why

  514. Lamentations

  515. doesn't end

  516. with verse

  517. 19.

  518. If it did,

  519. the application

  520. would be

  521. very trite

  522. for us.

  523. It would

  524. be nothing

  525. more than,

  526. well,

  527. always look

  528. on the

  529. bright side

  530. of life.

  531. Nothing

  532. more than

  533. that.

  534. Or,

  535. there's always

  536. a silver

  537. lining,

  538. you just

  539. got to

  540. look for

  541. it,

  542. or,

  543. you will

  544. rise like

  545. a phoenix

  546. from the

  547. ashes.

  548. The Christian

  549. hope is not

  550. just that God

  551. is in control,

  552. but that he's

  553. good.

  554. fundamental

  555. third

  556. being,

  557. he is

  558. good.

  559. And so

  560. in verse

  561. 20,

  562. we are

  563. back into

  564. the darkness

  565. and the

  566. death.

  567. Why do

  568. you always

  569. forget us?

  570. Why do

  571. you forsake

  572. us so

  573. long?

  574. And here

  575. we have

  576. a plea

  577. to God's

  578. goodness,

  579. which echoes

  580. verse 1,

  581. and it ends

  582. in the same

  583. kind of way.

  584. restore us

  585. to yourself,

  586. Lord,

  587. that we

  588. may return,

  589. renew our

  590. days as

  591. of old,

  592. unless you

  593. have utterly

  594. rejected us

  595. and are

  596. angry with

  597. us beyond

  598. measure.

  599. One

  600. commentator

  601. says that

  602. lamentation

  603. ends like

  604. it does

  605. because

  606. Jeremiah and

  607. Jerusalem

  608. are in a

  609. position akin

  610. to the

  611. disciples on

  612. Easter

  613. Saturday.

  614. The hope

  615. of the

  616. resurrection

  617. Easter day

  618. is yet

  619. to dawn

  620. for them.

  621. There is

  622. waiting,

  623. longing

  624. for hope

  625. to dawn.

  626. And while

  627. we wait,

  628. we need to

  629. hold both

  630. the sovereignty

  631. of God

  632. and the

  633. goodness of

  634. God in

  635. equal measure.

  636. The plea

  637. in verses

  638. 20 and

  639. 21 is

  640. simply,

  641. God,

  642. this hurts,

  643. help us.

  644. But the

  645. main words

  646. there are

  647. restore,

  648. return,

  649. renew.

  650. Verse 21,

  651. restore us

  652. to yourself,

  653. O Lord.

  654. This is not

  655. simply asking

  656. God to

  657. change the

  658. situation.

  659. It is,

  660. in fact,

  661. an appeal

  662. for

  663. forgiveness

  664. and a

  665. restored

  666. relationship.

  667. This is

  668. crucial.

  669. my fear

  670. is that

  671. for so

  672. many of

  673. us,

  674. we repent

  675. because we

  676. want to

  677. get a

  678. weight off

  679. our

  680. shoulders.

  681. We want

  682. to feel

  683. better about

  684. ourselves.

  685. And so

  686. when we

  687. do that,

  688. we constantly

  689. live with

  690. an underlying

  691. feeling of

  692. shame and

  693. am I truly

  694. forgiven?

  695. we don't

  696. sense the

  697. freedom of

  698. forgiveness.

  699. What's the

  700. purpose?

  701. In other

  702. words,

  703. when we do

  704. that,

  705. it's

  706. self-orientated.

  707. Our

  708. repentance

  709. is self-orientated.

  710. Repentance

  711. and forgiveness

  712. matters because

  713. of the

  714. next step.

  715. it's

  716. because it

  717. restores

  718. relationship.

  719. That's why

  720. repentance

  721. matters.

  722. If I

  723. wronged my

  724. wife,

  725. Nat,

  726. it causes,

  727. sorry,

  728. when I

  729. wronged my

  730. wife,

  731. Nat,

  732. it causes

  733. a strain,

  734. it causes

  735. a separation,

  736. a break

  737. in the

  738. relationship.

  739. There's

  740. this

  741. barrier,

  742. there's

  743. this

  744. problem

  745. and

  746. depending

  747. on how

  748. much I

  749. wronged

  750. her will

  751. depend on

  752. how great

  753. that barrier

  754. is,

  755. that roadblock

  756. in our

  757. relationship

  758. will be.

  759. Repentance

  760. and forgiveness

  761. matters,

  762. not so that I

  763. feel better

  764. about myself,

  765. it's because I

  766. get Nat

  767. back.

  768. That's why

  769. it matters.

  770. I want

  771. restored

  772. relationship.

  773. And as

  774. they sit

  775. on the

  776. rubble of

  777. Jerusalem,

  778. their suffering

  779. has led

  780. them to

  781. want God

  782. back.

  783. Even if

  784. the rubble

  785. remains,

  786. we want

  787. God back.

  788. This is

  789. more than

  790. just a

  791. prayer of

  792. lament,

  793. it is a

  794. prayer of

  795. repentance,

  796. it's a

  797. prayer for

  798. renewal,

  799. renewed

  800. relationship.

  801. It's

  802. prayer for

  803. restoration,

  804. renewal at

  805. the end

  806. of

  807. lamentations

  808. points us

  809. to something

  810. that only

  811. God can

  812. do.

  813. And yet

  814. for

  815. lamentations,

  816. this is

  817. where it

  818. ends.

  819. This

  820. historic

  821. lament

  822. concludes

  823. without

  824. resolution.

  825. resolution.

  826. As

  827. some of

  828. us feel

  829. like life

  830. is a

  831. bit like

  832. that at

  833. the

  834. moment,

  835. particularly

  836. in the

  837. moment of

  838. suffering when

  839. the storms

  840. hit,

  841. it feels

  842. like it

  843. just

  844. lingers.

  845. It

  846. ends by

  847. telling us

  848. where to

  849. look in

  850. pain,

  851. but not

  852. giving us the

  853. rest of the

  854. story.

  855. And it

  856. will be

  857. over 400

  858. years before

  859. the resolution

  860. comes.

  861. Just think

  862. about that

  863. for Judah

  864. for this

  865. moment.

  866. There was a

  867. gap of 400

  868. years before

  869. God spoke

  870. again.

  871. We want you

  872. back.

  873. And it

  874. was 400

  875. years before

  876. he spoke

  877. again.

  878. We don't

  879. have that

  880. long now.

  881. At the

  882. beginning of

  883. Matthew's

  884. account of

  885. Jesus'

  886. life,

  887. Joseph is

  888. told that

  889. Mary will

  890. give birth

  891. to a

  892. son.

  893. You give

  894. him the

  895. name Jesus

  896. because he

  897. will save

  898. his people

  899. from their

  900. sins.

  901. First

  902. words.

  903. Jesus is

  904. the one

  905. who restores

  906. us to

  907. God by

  908. taking

  909. God's

  910. punishment

  911. for us.

  912. Just

  913. before his

  914. execution and

  915. his arrest

  916. and his

  917. execution,

  918. Jesus is

  919. in the

  920. garden of

  921. Gethsemane

  922. and he

  923. says this,

  924. identifying

  925. with our

  926. sorrow,

  927. he says,

  928. my soul

  929. is overwhelmed

  930. with sorrow

  931. to the point

  932. of death.

  933. Mark 14

  934. tells us

  935. he was

  936. deeply

  937. distressed

  938. and he

  939. was troubled.

  940. We must

  941. not

  942. minimize

  943. what

  944. Jesus

  945. went

  946. through

  947. on

  948. our

  949. behalf.

  950. If you

  951. have a

  952. very high

  953. view of

  954. Jesus,

  955. we sort

  956. of tend

  957. to think,

  958. well,

  959. he could

  960. cope,

  961. he's God

  962. after all,

  963. he's divine,

  964. he can kind

  965. of cope with it,

  966. he knows what's

  967. going to happen,

  968. he knows the

  969. plan,

  970. but the fact

  971. is it says

  972. here Jesus

  973. is deeply

  974. distressed,

  975. which for him

  976. felt exactly

  977. what it feels

  978. like for you

  979. and for me,

  980. he is

  981. deeply

  982. distressed.

  983. in fact,

  984. more so,

  985. the anguish

  986. that he

  987. bore was

  988. greater than

  989. any anguish

  990. we would

  991. ever face,

  992. any sorrow

  993. that we

  994. would ever

  995. encounter.

  996. He saw

  997. the full

  998. terror of

  999. what lay

  1000. ahead,

  1001. his prostate

  1002. body convulsing

  1003. in the Garden

  1004. of Gethsemane

  1005. and his tears

  1006. and the sweat

  1007. falling to the

  1008. ground like

  1009. blood.

  1010. The terror

  1011. he felt

  1012. was not so

  1013. much because

  1014. of the pain

  1015. of the cross

  1016. that he was

  1017. about to

  1018. endure,

  1019. but because

  1020. of the

  1021. human sin

  1022. and all

  1023. of its

  1024. consequences,

  1025. the cup

  1026. of God's

  1027. judgment

  1028. being poured

  1029. out,

  1030. the destroyed

  1031. Jerusalem

  1032. is about

  1033. to destroy

  1034. him and

  1035. wreck the

  1036. Godhead

  1037. apart

  1038. in such a

  1039. way that

  1040. the Father

  1041. turns his

  1042. face away.

  1043. He saw

  1044. the brutality

  1045. of a thousand

  1046. holocausts,

  1047. all the

  1048. prostituting

  1049. and idolatry

  1050. of human

  1051. civilizations,

  1052. the blasphemy,

  1053. the profanity,

  1054. and it was

  1055. the cup

  1056. that was

  1057. full to

  1058. the brim

  1059. of jealousy

  1060. and hatred

  1061. and bitterness

  1062. and gossip

  1063. and greed

  1064. and anger,

  1065. and it was

  1066. his job

  1067. to drink

  1068. all of

  1069. God's

  1070. judgment.

  1071. He doesn't

  1072. want to do

  1073. it.

  1074. The storm

  1075. had hit,

  1076. but oh man,

  1077. the shelter

  1078. was up.

  1079. He falls

  1080. to the ground

  1081. and he

  1082. pleads,

  1083. if possible,

  1084. that this

  1085. hour might

  1086. pass,

  1087. but

  1088. not my

  1089. will,

  1090. but your

  1091. will be

  1092. done.

  1093. Your plan

  1094. goes forward,

  1095. not mine.

  1096. He soaks up

  1097. the punishment

  1098. of the world.

  1099. The greatest

  1100. display of

  1101. obedience to

  1102. the plan

  1103. of God,

  1104. Jesus took

  1105. the cup,

  1106. the full

  1107. cup of

  1108. human sin

  1109. and God's

  1110. judgment.

  1111. he looked

  1112. at it

  1113. shuddering

  1114. deep into

  1115. its depth

  1116. and in a

  1117. stilly act

  1118. of trust

  1119. and dependence

  1120. upon his

  1121. good father.

  1122. He drank

  1123. it all

  1124. for you

  1125. and for me

  1126. so that we

  1127. do not

  1128. end up

  1129. where Jeremiah

  1130. is at the

  1131. end of

  1132. Lamentations

  1133. 5.

  1134. 1 Peter 3

  1135. tells us

  1136. Christ

  1137. suffered

  1138. once for

  1139. all sin

  1140. for the

  1141. righteous,

  1142. the righteous

  1143. one for the

  1144. unrighteous

  1145. one to

  1146. bring you

  1147. back to

  1148. God.

  1149. You get

  1150. God back.

  1151. And so

  1152. Jesus,

  1153. the cross,

  1154. is the

  1155. resolution to

  1156. the plea in

  1157. Lamentations

  1158. 5.21 and

  1159. 22.

  1160. He's the

  1161. one who

  1162. brings us

  1163. back to

  1164. God.

  1165. None of

  1166. our suffering

  1167. makes any

  1168. sense.

  1169. In fact,

  1170. no suffering

  1171. in this

  1172. world,

  1173. whatever your

  1174. religion and

  1175. philosophical

  1176. system is,

  1177. makes no

  1178. sense

  1179. until we

  1180. see Jesus

  1181. suffering for

  1182. us.

  1183. God

  1184. himself

  1185. suffering for

  1186. us.

  1187. There isn't a

  1188. religion or

  1189. philosophical

  1190. system in

  1191. this world

  1192. that has any

  1193. answer to

  1194. human suffering

  1195. like the

  1196. Christian faith.

  1197. And so

  1198. we lament.

  1199. Because all

  1200. the promises

  1201. of God

  1202. are not

  1203. yet

  1204. fulfilled.

  1205. They have

  1206. their yes

  1207. and their

  1208. amen in

  1209. Jesus.

  1210. So let

  1211. me just

  1212. take a

  1213. slight

  1214. diversion

  1215. here.

  1216. Particularly

  1217. for those

  1218. of us in

  1219. this room

  1220. and watching

  1221. on screen

  1222. who have

  1223. walked with

  1224. Jesus for

  1225. a while.

  1226. The

  1227. opposite of

  1228. walking

  1229. with Jesus

  1230. in lament

  1231. while we

  1232. wait for

  1233. the

  1234. completeness

  1235. of his

  1236. promises

  1237. is a

  1238. cynical

  1239. spirit.

  1240. That's the

  1241. opposite of

  1242. lament.

  1243. And

  1244. I see

  1245. too much

  1246. of it

  1247. in my

  1248. own

  1249. heart

  1250. and I

  1251. see too

  1252. much of

  1253. it,

  1254. I believe,

  1255. amongst

  1256. Christians.

  1257. cynicism

  1258. is

  1259. increasingly

  1260. the

  1261. dominant

  1262. spirit

  1263. of this

  1264. age

  1265. and

  1266. too

  1267. many

  1268. Christians

  1269. are

  1270. marinating

  1271. in that

  1272. age.

  1273. Many

  1274. Christians

  1275. stand on

  1276. the edge

  1277. of

  1278. cynicism

  1279. struggling

  1280. with a

  1281. defeated

  1282. weariness

  1283. but

  1284. hiding

  1285. it

  1286. behind

  1287. a

  1288. theology

  1289. of

  1290. God's

  1291. sovereignty.

  1292. As a

  1293. pastor,

  1294. in moments

  1295. of grief,

  1296. I often

  1297. say to

  1298. people,

  1299. how are

  1300. you doing?

  1301. Trusting

  1302. in God's

  1303. plan.

  1304. Trusting

  1305. in God's

  1306. plan.

  1307. He's

  1308. sovereign,

  1309. he's in

  1310. control,

  1311. he'll work

  1312. it out.

  1313. But how

  1314. do you

  1315. feel about

  1316. that?

  1317. And

  1318. there's

  1319. no

  1320. response.

  1321. That's

  1322. cynicism.

  1323. That's

  1324. weariness,

  1325. not

  1326. lament.

  1327. That's

  1328. not

  1329. trust.

  1330. That is,

  1331. their

  1332. spirits

  1333. have

  1334. begun

  1335. to

  1336. deaden

  1337. but

  1338. unlike

  1339. their

  1340. cynic,

  1341. they

  1342. haven't

  1343. lost

  1344. all of

  1345. hope.

  1346. There's

  1347. still a

  1348. hope

  1349. there.

  1350. But the

  1351. fear of

  1352. further

  1353. sorrows

  1354. tends to

  1355. freeze

  1356. them.

  1357. Cynicism

  1358. and defeated

  1359. weariness both

  1360. question the

  1361. active

  1362. goodness of

  1363. God,

  1364. which is

  1365. why we

  1366. can't stop

  1367. at being

  1368. number

  1369. two.

  1370. Being

  1371. number

  1372. three is

  1373. the

  1374. difference

  1375. between

  1376. lament

  1377. and

  1378. cynicism.

  1379. Cynicism

  1380. creates a

  1381. numbness

  1382. towards

  1383. God

  1384. and

  1385. life,

  1386. a

  1387. deafening

  1388. silence

  1389. of

  1390. prayerlessness

  1391. about

  1392. your

  1393. heart

  1394. and

  1395. what's

  1396. going

  1397. on

  1398. in

  1399. this

  1400. world.

  1401. It

  1402. may

  1403. maintain

  1404. a

  1405. rigorous

  1406. theology

  1407. of

  1408. God's

  1409. sovereignty

  1410. while

  1411. not

  1412. actually

  1413. relating

  1414. to

  1415. him.

  1416. prayers

  1417. of

  1418. lament

  1419. engage

  1420. with

  1421. evil.

  1422. They

  1423. don't

  1424. take no

  1425. for an

  1426. answer.

  1427. Jeremiah

  1428. is in

  1429. God's

  1430. faith

  1431. as he

  1432. lays

  1433. bare

  1434. his

  1435. heart

  1436. hoping

  1437. dreaming

  1438. asking.

  1439. Lament

  1440. is not

  1441. wallowing.

  1442. Lament

  1443. is

  1444. feisty.

  1445. Cynicism

  1446. just

  1447. critiques

  1448. and

  1449. languishes

  1450. and

  1451. wallows.

  1452. That's

  1453. cynicism.

  1454. Cynicism

  1455. is

  1456. passive.

  1457. It is

  1458. without

  1459. hope in

  1460. this

  1461. life.

  1462. Only

  1463. hope for

  1464. life

  1465. forever.

  1466. That

  1467. is

  1468. the

  1469. sorrow

  1470. of

  1471. life

  1472. leads

  1473. us

  1474. to

  1475. the

  1476. man

  1477. of

  1478. sorrows.

  1479. The

  1480. man

  1481. of

  1482. sorrows.

  1483. The

  1484. God

  1485. who

  1486. knows

  1487. your

  1488. sorrow.

  1489. Under

  1490. the

  1491. dark

  1492. clouds

  1493. of

  1494. brokenness

  1495. God

  1496. offers

  1497. mercy.

  1498. I

  1499. sat

  1500. this

  1501. week

  1502. with a

  1503. ministry

  1504. peer

  1505. going

  1506. through

  1507. a

  1508. tough

  1509. time.

  1510. I

  1511. said to

  1512. him

  1513. what

  1514. have

  1515. you

  1516. learned

  1517. in

  1518. this

  1519. moment.

  1520. What's

  1521. God

  1522. teaching

  1523. you?

  1524. He

  1525. started

  1526. to

  1527. tear

  1528. up

  1529. and

  1530. he

  1531. said

  1532. I

  1533. just

  1534. hear

  1535. God

  1536. saying

  1537. to

  1538. me

  1539. all

  1540. the

  1541. time

  1542. walk

  1543. with

  1544. me.

  1545. Walk

  1546. with

  1547. me.

  1548. Walk

  1549. with

  1550. me.

  1551. God

  1552. the

  1553. man

  1554. of

  1555. sorrows

  1556. offers

  1557. the

  1558. embrace.

  1559. Lament

  1560. is the

  1561. language

  1562. of

  1563. a

  1564. people

  1565. who

  1566. know

  1567. the

  1568. whole

  1569. story.

  1570. Not

  1571. just

  1572. part

  1573. of

  1574. it.

  1575. The

  1576. gospel

  1577. story.

  1578. The

  1579. Christian's

  1580. view of

  1581. pain

  1582. and

  1583. suffering

  1584. in

  1585. this

  1586. present

  1587. life

  1588. is

  1589. transformed

  1590. because

  1591. of the

  1592. good

  1593. news

  1594. of the

  1595. man

  1596. of

  1597. sorrows.

  1598. For

  1599. I

  1600. consider

  1601. that

  1602. the

  1603. sufferings

  1604. of

  1605. this

  1606. present

  1607. time

  1608. are

  1609. not

  1610. worth

  1611. comparing

  1612. with

  1613. the

  1614. glory

  1615. that

  1616. is

  1617. to

  1618. be

  1619. revealed

  1620. to

  1621. us.

  1622. And

  1623. so

  1624. we

  1625. along

  1626. with

  1627. all

  1628. creation

  1629. groan

  1630. as

  1631. we

  1632. wait

  1633. for

  1634. the

  1635. future

  1636. day

  1637. when

  1638. Christ's

  1639. victory

  1640. will

  1641. be

  1642. complete.

  1643. We

  1644. lament.

  1645. We

  1646. embrace

  1647. this

  1648. language

  1649. of

  1650. sorrow

  1651. as

  1652. a

  1653. road

  1654. map

  1655. to

  1656. God's

  1657. grace

  1658. and

  1659. getting

  1660. God

  1661. back.

  1662. You

  1663. can hear

  1664. God

  1665. call out

  1666. to you

  1667. at the

  1668. moment

  1669. if that's

  1670. your

  1671. position

  1672. in life.

  1673. walk

  1674. with

  1675. me.

  1676. Walk

  1677. with

  1678. me.

  1679. Let's

  1680. pray.

  1681. Gracious

  1682. Father and

  1683. Lord of

  1684. all,

  1685. sin has

  1686. ravaged

  1687. your

  1688. good

  1689. world.

  1690. Living

  1691. in a

  1692. sin riddled

  1693. world means

  1694. we

  1695. accumulate

  1696. pain

  1697. and

  1698. sorrow

  1699. and hurt.

  1700. Much

  1701. of that

  1702. is stored

  1703. deep in

  1704. our

  1705. hearts.

  1706. We

  1707. have

  1708. been

  1709. touched

  1710. by

  1711. sin

  1712. and

  1713. pain

  1714. so

  1715. many

  1716. times

  1717. and

  1718. in

  1719. so

  1720. many

  1721. ways

  1722. it's

  1723. hard

  1724. to

  1725. remember

  1726. it

  1727. all

  1728. but

  1729. some

  1730. of

  1731. those

  1732. times

  1733. they

  1734. are

  1735. just

  1736. seared

  1737. into

  1738. our

  1739. memories.

  1740. We

  1741. battle

  1742. with

  1743. cynicism.

  1744. For

  1745. some of

  1746. us

  1747. cynicism

  1748. has

  1749. crept

  1750. in

  1751. and

  1752. made

  1753. us

  1754. passive

  1755. with

  1756. you.

  1757. So

  1758. we

  1759. have

  1760. this

  1761. trust

  1762. in

  1763. a

  1764. theological

  1765. system

  1766. rather

  1767. than

  1768. walking

  1769. with

  1770. you.

  1771. It

  1772. is

  1773. passive

  1774. with

  1775. you.

  1776. And

  1777. so we

  1778. ask for

  1779. your help

  1780. Holy

  1781. Spirit

  1782. to look

  1783. again

  1784. at those

  1785. sufferings

  1786. and discern

  1787. your love

  1788. for us

  1789. in that

  1790. very

  1791. pain.

  1792. Give

  1793. us

  1794. wisdom

  1795. and

  1796. discernment

  1797. if not

  1798. to fully

  1799. understand

  1800. your ways

  1801. but to

  1802. trust

  1803. your plans

  1804. your power

  1805. your goodness

  1806. the goodness

  1807. that saw

  1808. you intervene

  1809. for us

  1810. Jesus.

  1811. Father

  1812. teach us

  1813. to trust

  1814. and to

  1815. live as

  1816. people

  1817. who know

  1818. that our

  1819. final hope

  1820. cannot be

  1821. in any

  1822. earthly

  1823. Jerusalem

  1824. or in

  1825. any

  1826. earthly

  1827. circumstances

  1828. just getting

  1829. better

  1830. but only

  1831. in you.

  1832. So grow

  1833. our faith

  1834. in you

  1835. in the face

  1836. of adversity

  1837. and pain.

  1838. Thank you

  1839. for the gift

  1840. of lament.

  1841. Amen.

  1842. Horatio

  1843. Spafford

  1844. was a

  1845. prominent

  1846. American

  1847. lawyer

  1848. and

  1849. Presbyterian

  1850. church

  1851. elder

  1852. back in

  1853. the 1800s.

  1854. He knew

  1855. suffering

  1856. and loss

  1857. in his

  1858. life

  1859. in all

  1860. kinds

  1861. of

  1862. ways.

  1863. Certainly

  1864. not the

  1865. least

  1866. that

  1867. scarlet

  1868. fever

  1869. killed

  1870. his

  1871. four

  1872. year

  1873. old

  1874. son

  1875. in the

  1876. same

  1877. year

  1878. that

  1879. his

  1880. business

  1881. was

  1882. destroyed

  1883. by

  1884. fire

  1885. in

  1886. Chicago.

  1887. Two

  1888. years

  1889. later

  1890. the

  1891. family

  1892. decided

  1893. to

  1894. take

  1895. a

  1896. holiday

  1897. to

  1898. Europe

  1899. as

  1900. part

  1901. of

  1902. a

  1903. respite

  1904. and

  1905. rebuilding

  1906. opportunity

  1907. for

  1908. them.

  1909. Horatio

  1910. was

  1911. delayed

  1912. because

  1913. business

  1914. at the

  1915. last

  1916. minute

  1917. he was

  1918. delayed

  1919. and so

  1920. his wife

  1921. and his

  1922. four

  1923. daughters

  1924. travelled

  1925. on ahead

  1926. of him

  1927. across

  1928. the

  1929. Atlantic

  1930. on a

  1931. ship.

  1932. On

  1933. the

  1934. 22nd

  1935. of

  1936. November

  1937. 1873

  1938. while

  1939. crossing

  1940. the

  1941. Atlantic

  1942. their

  1943. ship

  1944. was

  1945. hit

  1946. by

  1947. an

  1948. iron

  1949. sailing

  1950. vessel

  1951. 226

  1952. people

  1953. lost

  1954. their

  1955. lives

  1956. including

  1957. four

  1958. of

  1959. Spafford's

  1960. daughters

  1961. all of

  1962. them

  1963. all these

  1964. kids

  1965. gone

  1966. now.

  1967. He

  1968. got the

  1969. news

  1970. when his

  1971. wife

  1972. touched

  1973. down

  1974. in

  1975. England.

  1976. Spafford

  1977. immediately

  1978. sailed

  1979. to

  1980. England

  1981. and

  1982. as

  1983. he

  1984. sailed

  1985. over

  1986. the

  1987. location

  1988. of

  1989. his

  1990. daughter's

  1991. death

  1992. he

  1993. penned

  1994. a

  1995. hymn.

  1996. Let's

  1997. stand

  1998. and sing

  1999. it.
