  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. My name is James, and my middle name is Stuart,

  3. and I'm more than happy for you to make up nicknames based on that.

  4. I love doing that, so please, be creative as you like.

  5. And I'm also very excited to be ordained in a couple of weeks here,

  6. and I'd love to see you all here if you can.

  7. I recently learned a phrase in Korean.

  8. Now, I'm very sorry, my Korean accent is, like, really terrible,

  9. but here we go.

  10. The phrase is,

  11. Does anybody know any Korean?

  12. No? Okay, so it wasn't that helpful.

  13. The phrase means,

  14. when you walk past a mountain,

  15. there is another mountain to walk past.

  16. I think it's a slightly better version of

  17. out of the frying pan into the fire.

  18. And the last part of the phrase,

  19. Taishan, is actually talking about a mountain

  20. in Shandong province in China.

  21. It's this mountain called Taishan.

  22. And it has this imagery of,

  23. once you walk up part of this mountain,

  24. there's just another part of the mountain to climb up.

  25. But I think it captures a certain feeling,

  26. a mixture of joy and pain really well.

  27. That feeling of getting past one struggle

  28. and being joyful that you're on the other side of it,

  29. but then the clouds part

  30. and there is just another struggle,

  31. another challenge ahead.

  32. I know it's been exam period for many people here,

  33. and it's like that short-term feeling of joy

  34. when you finish one exam,

  35. only to remember you have four more coming up.

  36. How foolish is it if we pretend

  37. that after the first struggle,

  38. after the first exam,

  39. that there's no more,

  40. and it's just easy roads ahead.

  41. But I think, I wonder actually,

  42. I wonder if we can do the same thing with God.

  43. Is it possible that we depend on God

  44. in one difficult season,

  45. like a COVID lockdown,

  46. one struggle,

  47. and then we quickly forget how much we need Him,

  48. and we go back to trying to do life on our own.

  49. We've climbed one mountain with God's help,

  50. and then we don't even see the next one,

  51. and we don't realize how dependent we are

  52. on God in every season.

  53. Today is our last in our series,

  54. Hope in Despair.

  55. We've spent the last eight weeks

  56. in the Psalms and the Book of Lamentations,

  57. and I'm really thankful for this series.

  58. I texted in to that number

  59. about how thankful I am

  60. because I have been reminded

  61. of how amazing God's grace is to us.

  62. That we do things which make God grieve,

  63. and He continues to love us.

  64. I'm thankful for Psalm 13 last week,

  65. which gave us a way to use our lament.

  66. The Book of Lamentations

  67. was a very difficult book to read through

  68. as we saw the city of Jerusalem destroyed,

  69. but it has been wonderful for me personally

  70. to see and to be reminded

  71. that we have a God who stands by His people.

  72. Even when He pours out His anger on them,

  73. He continues to love them,

  74. and He does that as well,

  75. ultimately in Jesus.

  76. But the challenge for me

  77. and the challenge for us today

  78. is that as we come out of a season of despair,

  79. as we come back into what seems to be

  80. more like normal life,

  81. that we cannot trust in God.

  82. We can think that we've got it,

  83. and we can forget the mountains ahead.

  84. So the challenge will be for us

  85. to continue to trust in God

  86. and not forget our need in Him

  87. because our God is our only hope.

  88. And so today, we're in Psalm 40,

  89. and King David is going to encourage us

  90. to be lifelong lamenters

  91. who know how to cry out,

  92. how to pray to God,

  93. how to rejoice in Him,

  94. how to do what Aidan did

  95. and prepare a lament

  96. so we can use that later

  97. so that we can lament our sin,

  98. so we can grieve in a difficult season.

  99. When there's a loss of a loved one

  100. or a difficult season,

  101. we can depend on God's grace

  102. in every season.

  103. So let me pray

  104. as we have a look at Psalm 40.

  105. Dear Heavenly Father,

  106. I thank You for Your goodness to us,

  107. that You walk with us

  108. and You continue to walk with us

  109. when we think we don't need You.

  110. Heavenly Father,

  111. as we are reminded of Your love

  112. and Your grace in Psalm 40,

  113. remind us of our continual need

  114. in You today, Lord.

  115. Amen.

  116. So please,

  117. have your Bibles open.

  118. Psalm chapter 40.

    Psalms 40 chapter mention

  119. We're going to spend our time

  120. in Psalm 40 today.

  121. As we see that God saves

  122. and He continues to save.

  123. Psalm 40 verse 1.

    Psalms 40:1

  124. I waited patiently for the Lord.

  125. He turned to me and heard my cry.

  126. He lifted me out of the slimy pit,

  127. out of the mud and mire.

  128. This is almost the flip side

  129. of the season we've been in.

  130. We've been looking at a number of laments

  131. and people grieving.

  132. And this is David.

  133. And he's saying,

  134. I have been grieving,

  135. but you have answered me.

  136. David had been in a time of despair.

  137. He cried out to God

  138. and then he waited patiently.

  139. Now, we don't know how long he had to wait

  140. or what he was crying out to God for,

  141. but he waited patiently.

  142. Now, even that word there,

  143. that's a challenge.

  144. I don't like waiting for anything,

  145. especially when I'm in despair.

  146. God, come and fix it now.

  147. But David waited patiently.

  148. David has waited on God

  149. in a season of despair.

  150. And God has answered him.

  151. He has saved him

  152. from whatever the issue was.

  153. And that description of the problem,

  154. it's just so vivid.

  155. It's pictured as a slimy pit

  156. out of the mud and mire

  157. or the miry bog

  158. from older translations.

  159. Now, it makes me think

  160. of my worst nightmare

  161. as a child.

  162. Quicksand.

  163. It seemed to be

  164. in every TV show

  165. that I grew up in.

  166. It was the threat

  167. of stumbling upon to quicksand

  168. and then you,

  169. no matter how much you tried,

  170. you couldn't claw your way out of it.

  171. Now, I've never been in one.

  172. Has anybody been in quicksand?

  173. No, it turns out

  174. it's not actually

  175. that much of a threat.

  176. But it's this picture

  177. of danger,

  178. of slippery walls.

  179. You're unable to save yourself.

  180. David says he was stuck

  181. in a hole,

  182. unable to get himself out there.

  183. He can't even get

  184. a foothold or purchase

  185. to try and fix the situation.

  186. It sounds a lot like

  187. a COVID lockdown.

  188. For a while there,

  189. it didn't seem to matter

  190. what restrictions were in place.

  191. Nothing was getting better.

  192. There seemed to be

  193. no way out.

  194. It was this season

  195. of depression and despair,

  196. attack from outside

  197. and attack from in.

  198. But God has saved David

  199. from what seemed to him

  200. to be an impossible situation.

  201. God has saved him.

  202. He's pulled him out.

  203. And there's a contrast

  204. in the rest of verse 2.

  205. Pulled him out of the miry pit.

  206. Verse 2,

  207. the second part of verse 2.

  208. He set my feet on a rock

  209. and gave me a firm place to stand.

  210. Safety.

  211. Security in God.

  212. Now I don't know

  213. the feeling of coming out

  214. of a slimy pit

  215. onto firm ground,

  216. but I do know

  217. a similar feeling.

  218. The feeling of

  219. being swept into the ocean

  220. and not being in control.

  221. I remember one morning

  222. on holiday

  223. a couple of years ago.

  224. I'd gone for a run

  225. on the beach

  226. early in the morning

  227. and then I jumped in the ocean

  228. and I swam a little bit.

  229. And I didn't realise

  230. how tired my legs were

  231. until I tried

  232. to swim back into shore.

  233. It wasn't then

  234. until then I realised

  235. I was actually being pulled out.

  236. And I had that moment

  237. where I had my life flash before me.

  238. Is this going to be

  239. the place that I die?

  240. Are my two little kids

  241. going to be without a father

  242. at this point?

  243. And I remember that feeling

  244. when my foot

  245. finally hit sand.

  246. Joy.

  247. Inexpressible joy, relief.

  248. Praise to God.

  249. God,

  250. my children are going to see

  251. their dad for another day.

  252. God has taken David

  253. out of the pits

  254. of pain and despair,

  255. a struggle he couldn't

  256. climb out of,

  257. and placed him safe

  258. on a rock

  259. and David responds

  260. by praising God.

  261. Because of God saving him,

  262. David trusts in God more

  263. and he wants to give his life

  264. and not just a couple of offerings.

  265. Have a look at verse 3.

  266. He put a new song

  267. in my mouth,

  268. a hymn of praise

  269. to our God.

  270. Many will see

  271. and fear the Lord

  272. and put their trust in him.

  273. He is praising God.

  274. He is rejoicing

  275. and his trust

  276. and dependence

  277. has grown.

  278. He cried out to God.

  279. He waited on him.

  280. God answered

  281. and saved him.

  282. And importantly,

  283. David doesn't just move on

  284. to the next thing

  285. he's got to do

  286. in his life.

  287. He sits in this moment

  288. and praises God.

  289. He trusts in him

  290. and he offers

  291. his whole life to him.

  292. Verse 6,

  293. sacrifice and offering

  294. you did not desire,

  295. but my ears

  296. you have opened.

  297. Burn offerings

  298. and sin offerings

  299. you did not require.

  300. Then I said,

  301. here I am,

  302. I have come.

  303. It is written about me

  304. in the scroll.

  305. I desire to do your will,

  306. my God.

  307. Your law

  308. is within my heart.

  309. Now it's hard not

  310. to read this part

  311. and immediately

  312. think of Jesus.

  313. But David is the

  314. fulfillment of expectation.

  315. He is the king.

  316. But where David

  317. desires to do

  318. God's will,

  319. Jesus is the one

  320. who does it.

  321. He is the one

  322. who the scrolls

  323. point to,

  324. the Old Testament

  325. points to.

  326. And whilst God

  327. has been faithful

  328. and answered

  329. David's call,

  330. how much more

  331. for Jesus?

  332. Crying out

  333. on the cross,

  334. God,

  335. why have you

  336. forsaken me?

  337. And yet God

  338. lifted Jesus

  339. out of a pit.

  340. Not just a pit

  341. of despair

  342. and pain,

  343. but the pit

  344. of death.

  345. And because God

  346. has lifted him up,

  347. he lifts us

  348. up to new life too.

  349. Placing us

  350. on the firm

  351. foundation

  352. of Jesus.

  353. In our moment

  354. of salvation,

  355. we don't even

  356. realize how high

  357. the walls

  358. of the pit

  359. are around us

  360. until we get

  361. taken out of them.

  362. We were stuck

  363. in a pit,

  364. but not just

  365. a difficult pit,

  366. an impossible pit.

  367. Ephesians 2

  368. tells us

  369. that we

  370. were dead,

  371. totally unable

  372. to climb out

  373. of our graves.

  374. But God

  375. has pulled us

  376. out of this pit

  377. in Jesus

  378. and he puts

  379. us on him

  380. a firm

  381. foundation.

  382. And so now

  383. we can do

  384. what David

  385. does and see

  386. God's goodness

  387. on the other

  388. side of this pit.

  389. We can see

  390. and be reminded

  391. that God

  392. is good.

  393. He listens

  394. to us.

  395. He answers

  396. our cries.

  397. We can say,

  398. God,

  399. I can depend

  400. upon you

  401. when I'm in a pit

  402. because no matter

  403. what pit I'm in,

  404. it's not going

  405. to be as bad

  406. as the pit

  407. I was in

  408. when I was dead.

  409. but God,

  410. you have pulled

  411. me out of that

  412. and I can stand

  413. on Jesus

  414. regardless

  415. of the season

  416. around me

  417. because no pit

  418. can swallow me

  419. because I am firm

  420. in him.

  421. If those

  422. 10 verses

  423. were all we had

  424. of Psalm 40,

  425. it would be lovely

  426. and it would be amazing.

  427. It's this picture

  428. of David

  429. responding to God

  430. saving him,

  431. David crying out

  432. and David

  433. knowing that

  434. God saves him.

  435. But that's not

  436. the full story

  437. because that's not

  438. our lived experience.

  439. That illustration

  440. from before

  441. about that Korean

  442. phrase,

  443. our life

  444. is much more

  445. we climb a mountain,

  446. we go through

  447. a season of despair

  448. and then there's

  449. another mountain

  450. to climb.

  451. The truth is

  452. that we lurch

  453. from disaster

  454. to disaster,

  455. from the frying pan

  456. to the fire.

  457. Just because

  458. someone has

  459. survived cancer

  460. doesn't mean

  461. that they won't

  462. lose a loved one.

  463. Just because

  464. someone has

  465. struggled to

  466. find a job

  467. doesn't mean

  468. their house

  469. won't be threatened

  470. by a bushfire.

  471. The harsh

  472. realistic truth

  473. is that we live

  474. in a damned world

  475. cursed by sin.

  476. God is the only hope

  477. until he sends Jesus

  478. and this world

  479. is remade.

  480. It is easy

  481. to move on

  482. from one mountain

  483. of dependence

  484. on God

  485. and forget him

  486. in the next moment.

  487. Throughout lockdown

  488. I was very aware

  489. of the mountain

  490. that we were climbing.

  491. I was very aware

  492. how much I needed

  493. God's help

  494. just to do

  495. daily things

  496. like have

  497. patience

  498. with my kids.

  499. God was really good

  500. to me in that season.

  501. I really appreciated

  502. reading the book

  503. of Jeremiah

  504. and being reminded

  505. about God's

  506. continued patience

  507. for his kids

  508. Israel.

  509. And that encouraged

  510. me to be a good dad.

  511. And then we got

  512. back to normal life.

  513. We came out

  514. of lockdown

  515. and I didn't realise it

  516. but I'd actually

  517. put that dependence

  518. on God

  519. particularly for

  520. patience to one side.

  521. And I went back

  522. to thinking

  523. normal life

  524. I can do this

  525. I can do this

  526. on my own.

  527. Even though

  528. it's just a different

  529. mountain to climb.

  530. And so

  531. you know

  532. I'm not sure

  533. if you found this

  534. came out of lockdown

  535. my kids hadn't seen

  536. anybody for four months

  537. they went back

  538. to school

  539. we thought

  540. yes

  541. school's back

  542. and then they all

  543. got sick

  544. because they were

  545. back with people.

  546. And I love you all

  547. thank you for wearing masks.

  548. And even then

  549. I thought

  550. okay

  551. we're back

  552. to this

  553. we've just

  554. gotten our freedom

  555. I thought

  556. I had life

  557. and now

  558. we're back

  559. in a different

  560. sort of lockdown

  561. and that challenge

  562. of having patience

  563. was back

  564. but I hadn't realised

  565. how much

  566. I needed

  567. God in that.

  568. Instead of

  569. coming to him

  570. and grieving

  571. the fact that

  572. we live in a cursed world

  573. where you still have to

  574. deal with sickness

  575. depending on him

  576. as the great healer

  577. I just thought

  578. I can do it.

  579. But there is

  580. a wonderful hope

  581. and encouragement

  582. here for us

  583. in Psalm 40.

  584. The first half

  585. of the Psalm

  586. is David

  587. being thankful

  588. to God

  589. that he has

  590. saved him.

  591. The second half

  592. of Psalm 40

  593. David says

  594. oh God

  595. I've stuffed up

  596. and I need you

  597. to save me

  598. I'm in another pit

  599. I need you

  600. to get me

  601. out of this.

  602. Verse 11

  603. David's own sin

  604. has caused

  605. his trouble

  606. and his request

  607. his request

  608. is based

  609. on God

  610. and on

  611. who God

  612. is.

  613. God

  614. is merciful

  615. he is faithful

  616. and he is loving

  617. and so even though

  618. David has

  619. effectively

  620. just gone

  621. and jumped

  622. back into

  623. the pit

  624. God has

  625. pulled him

  626. out of

  627. David

  628. cries out

  629. to him

  630. our God

  631. is a much

  632. better father

  633. than me

  634. if my kids

  635. continually

  636. come and ask

  637. me the same

  638. thing

  639. I'll be okay

  640. the first

  641. three or four

  642. or five times

  643. on the sixth

  644. it's just like

  645. leave me alone

  646. just figure it

  647. out yourself

  648. God is not

  649. like that

  650. we throw

  651. ourself back

  652. into that pit

  653. of despair

  654. repeatedly

  655. we choose

  656. to sin

  657. and God

  658. in his goodness

  659. and patience

  660. and love

  661. for us

  662. continues to

  663. answer our

  664. cries for help

  665. verse 13

  666. be pleased

  667. to save me

  668. Lord

  669. come quickly

  670. Lord

  671. to help me

  672. David has

  673. learnt the

  674. lesson of

  675. grief and

  676. lamentation

  677. calling out

  678. to God

  679. when in need

  680. depending on

  681. him in

  682. each and

  683. every

  684. circumstance

  685. even the

  686. problems that

  687. he is now

  688. making

  689. God doesn't

  690. ignore him

  691. David sees

  692. how faithful

  693. God is

  694. that he is a

  695. God who

  696. answers prayers

  697. and so he

  698. continues to

  699. cry out

  700. and he's aware

  701. of his condition

  702. verse 17

  703. as for me

  704. I am poor

  705. and needy

  706. may the Lord

  707. think of me

  708. you are my

  709. help and my

  710. deliverer

  711. you are my

  712. God do not

  713. delay

  714. now this is

  715. King David

  716. saying these

  717. words

  718. not sure if

  719. he's in a

  720. cave at this

  721. point but

  722. this is the

  723. king and he

  724. is saying he

  725. is poor

  726. and needy

  727. he is aware

  728. of who he

  729. is before

  730. God

  731. that's what

  732. happens when

  733. we cry out

  734. to God

  735. we see God

  736. answer us

  737. when our

  738. trust and

  739. dependence grows

  740. in him

  741. we become more

  742. aware of who

  743. we are and

  744. who he is

  745. how awesome

  746. he is and

  747. how awful

  748. we are and

  749. how much we

  750. need him

  751. so that we

  752. can say God

  753. I am poor

  754. and needy but

  755. you are my

  756. help and my

  757. deliverer

  758. when we learn

  759. the lament of

  760. Psalm 40 and

  761. the and from

  762. the book of

  763. lamentations or

  764. from Psalm 13

  765. we learn David's

  766. lesson here that

  767. God is always

  768. good he is

  769. always helping and

  770. answering prayers he

  771. is always able to

  772. be trusted but

  773. also how good

  774. God's grace for

  775. us is that our

  776. God would

  777. willingly trade

  778. our place with

  779. Jesus at the

  780. cross and so

  781. that we can

  782. continue to cry

  783. out to him

  784. preacher

  785. theologian and

  786. author Don

  787. Carson told a

  788. story about a

  789. missionary who

  790. came back to

  791. Don Carson's

  792. church while he

  793. was doing his

  794. PhD he brought

  795. his wife and

  796. young daughter

  797. with him when

  798. they were there

  799. and he was

  800. studying his

  801. PhD his wife

  802. got cancer she

  803. was treated with

  804. chemotherapy and

  805. she recovered six

  806. months later he

  807. was diagnosed with

  808. cancer liver

  809. cancer no one

  810. wanted to touch

  811. him eventually

  812. they found doctors

  813. who would help

  814. him they took a

  815. large chunk of

  816. his stomach with

  817. radical treatment

  818. but eventually he

  819. recovered and was

  820. able to continue

  821. his PhD studies

  822. six months after

  823. that his wife died

  824. of cancer he

  825. finished his PhD

  826. but before he went

  827. back to the mission

  828. field with his then

  829. nine-year-old

  830. daughter he went

  831. and spoke at Don

  832. Carson's church

  833. and he thanked

  834. everybody for their

  835. support for their

  836. prayers for him

  837. over this time

  838. and he thanked

  839. God for all his

  840. goodness

  841. he thanked God

  842. for the assurance

  843. of life

  844. for real hope

  845. that he would see

  846. his wife again

  847. he thanked God

  848. that he had left

  849. him there to care

  850. for his daughter

  851. he spent his

  852. whole time

  853. in gratitude

  854. and Don Carson

  855. made the point

  856. a very painful

  857. point

  858. that that is

  859. simply normal

  860. Christian living

  861. hope in despair

  862. is the usual

  863. life of the

  864. Christian

  865. it is to be

  866. the usual

  867. life of the

  868. Christian

  869. our hope

  870. isn't that

  871. this season

  872. of pain

  873. will get

  874. better

  875. our hope

  876. is not that

  877. we will climb

  878. a mountain

  879. and then

  880. it will just

  881. be valleys

  882. it will be

  883. smooth sailing

  884. it will just

  885. be downhill

  886. from here

  887. because that

  888. is not our

  889. lived experience

  890. that is not

  891. life

  892. it is we

  893. climb a

  894. mountain

  895. and there's

  896. another

  897. mountain

  898. our hope

  899. is in

  900. Jesus

  901. who didn't

  902. climb a

  903. mountain

  904. he went up

  905. a hill

  906. to Jerusalem

  907. he went

  908. on to a

  909. cross

  910. who God

  911. raised from

  912. the dead

  913. who pulled

  914. him out

  915. of the pit

  916. and so that

  917. no matter what

  918. happens with

  919. our story

  920. about the

  921. mountains we

  922. have to

  923. climb

  924. we can

  925. grieve the

  926. painful

  927. difficult

  928. seasons

  929. we can

  930. grieve the

  931. challenges of

  932. work

  933. our families

  934. getting sick

  935. because Jesus

  936. has climbed

  937. the most

  938. important

  939. mountain

  940. and he

  941. has placed

  942. us on his

  943. back

  944. and carries

  945. us like a

  946. little child

  947. to stand

  948. before God

  949. the Christian

  950. can endure

  951. that the

  952. story of

  953. the missionary

  954. still rejoicing

  955. and being

  956. thankful to

  957. God

  958. it can be

  959. our story

  960. because Jesus

  961. is walking

  962. with us

  963. he says

  964. this pain

  965. you're going

  966. through

  967. I have

  968. already

  969. walked

  970. through it

  971. come

  972. and follow

  973. me

  974. come and

  975. place your

  976. burdens

  977. on me

  978. because I

  979. can carry

  980. them

  981. and so

  982. as we

  983. finish this

  984. series

  985. this season

  986. of having

  987. hope in

  988. despair

  989. and before

  990. we head

  991. into Christmas

  992. and we get

  993. distracted

  994. with the

  995. food and

  996. the lights

  997. and the

  998. feasting

  999. and the

  1000. festivals

  1001. and the

  1002. presents

  1003. remember

  1004. the value

  1005. of lament

  1006. lament

  1007. reminds us

  1008. of God's

  1009. goodness

  1010. it reminds

  1011. us of how

  1012. we still

  1013. depend on

  1014. God

  1015. on how

  1016. we should

  1017. be grieving

  1018. our sins

  1019. grieving

  1020. the things

  1021. that go

  1022. on around

  1023. us

  1024. but also

  1025. remembering

  1026. and celebrating

  1027. and rejoicing

  1028. God's goodness

  1029. to us

  1030. that he

  1031. would have

  1032. grace for

  1033. us

  1034. remember it

  1035. because there

  1036. is another

  1037. mountain around

  1038. the corner

  1039. to climb

  1040. but Jesus

  1041. is already

  1042. there

  1043. calling us

  1044. to walk

  1045. with him

  1046. don't

  1047. get bogged

  1048. down in

  1049. the mountain

  1050. because

  1051. God is

  1052. there with

  1053. us

  1054. cry out

  1055. to him

  1056. to help

  1057. because he

  1058. will answer

  1059. let's pray

  1060. heavenly

  1061. father

  1062. you were

  1063. so kind

  1064. to us

  1065. that Jesus

  1066. climbed

  1067. that mountain

  1068. to Jerusalem

  1069. that he

  1070. was on

  1071. a cross

  1072. that you

  1073. pulled him

  1074. out of

  1075. the pit

  1076. of death

  1077. and that

  1078. you have

  1079. raised us

  1080. to life

  1081. heavenly

  1082. father

  1083. thank you

  1084. that you

  1085. continue

  1086. to walk

  1087. with us

  1088. in the

  1089. good seasons

  1090. and in the

  1091. painful

  1092. difficult ones

  1093. lord

  1094. heavenly

  1095. father

  1096. for those

  1097. of us

  1098. who are

  1099. not in

  1100. a difficult

  1101. season

  1102. at the

  1103. moment

  1104. help us

  1105. not to

  1106. think that

  1107. we can

  1108. do it

  1109. on our

  1110. own

  1111. but lord

  1112. remind us

  1113. in season

  1114. and out

  1115. about how

  1116. much we

  1117. need you

  1118. bring us

  1119. closer to

  1120. you lord

  1121. and we

  1122. ask this

  1123. in your

  1124. son's name

  1125. and for

  1126. your glory

  1127. amen

  1128. amen

  1129. amen

  1130. me

  1131. amen

  1132. amen

  1133. amen
