  1. Have you heard the news?

  2. Did you hear what's just happened?

  3. I can't believe it.

  4. Oh, you haven't heard?

  5. You didn't see what's been on the front of social media

  6. and the front of the newspapers?

  7. Our ears tend to prick up at these types of things.

  8. Maybe you were actually wondering

  9. if I actually had some news to share.

  10. It's one of the things that I think social media does really well.

  11. It's constantly bombard us with new information.

  12. If you keep pulling down or hitting refresh

  13. on Facebook or Insta or Twitter,

  14. it just continues to provide us with new things

  15. for our eyes to look at

  16. because our brains really like it.

  17. They've figured out how much we like it

  18. and how addicted we can be

  19. to just getting new information in.

  20. How would you feel if I shared the front page

  21. of the news from 2005?

  22. Would you care?

  23. What if I, you know, it's that feeling of

  24. showing someone a picture of a meme

  25. that they've already seen.

  26. It's just kind of like,

  27. hmm, yeah, it's a good one.

  28. But I wonder if there's some pieces of news.

  29. I wonder if there's some pieces of information

  30. that are still life-changing.

  31. Some things that just stop us in our tracks.

  32. You know, when an old friend

  33. who you've been meeting with,

  34. you've just been spending hours with them

  35. for years and years and years,

  36. when this old friend says to you,

  37. I really still like catching up with you.

  38. It's actually really wonderful.

  39. You know, that's news you still want to hear.

  40. When a family member tells you again

  41. for the 400th time how much they love you.

  42. Some of this news that we hear,

  43. we may have heard before,

  44. but some news can still impact our hearts.

  45. It's Christmas time.

  46. We've gathered late at night to celebrate,

  47. to hear the old, old news

  48. of Jesus coming as a baby.

  49. I wonder what kind of news it is for you.

  50. Is it news that we've just heard before

  51. and it's not exciting

  52. and we're actually looking for something

  53. more interesting, more exciting for Christmas?

  54. Or is there still something relevant for us

  55. about this old news

  56. that can still impact our hearts this year?

  57. Tonight we're looking at how Mary,

  58. the mother of Jesus,

  59. responded to the news of Jesus.

  60. And the challenge for us will be

  61. to be amazed and transformed

  62. at this old news.

  63. Not like it's the first time we've heard it,

  64. but because it is still meaningful for us.

  65. So as we do this tonight,

  66. let me pray for us.

  67. Dear Heavenly Father,

  68. I ask that you would help us

  69. to encounter this news of Jesus' birth

  70. afresh tonight

  71. and that it would be life-changing again for us, Lord.

  72. We ask this in your Son's name.

  73. Amen.

  74. We're going to see two things tonight.

  75. First of all, we're going to see Mary's response to the news

  76. and then we're going to consider

  77. how we need to respond to this old news.

  78. We come to Mary

  79. and her response to hearing from God.

  80. She is a young lady,

  81. around the age of 15,

  82. pledged to be married to a man by the name of Joseph.

  83. And an angel appears to her with a message from God.

  84. This is the freshest of news that you could get.

  85. And she says,

  86. please have your Bibles open,

  87. have your notes open with me.

  88. We're going to start in verse 28,

  89. where we see the angel says,

  90. greetings,

  91. you who are highly favoured.

  92. The Lord is with you.

  93. Now, I'm not sure how you would respond

  94. if you had an angel appear,

  95. let alone describe you as highly favoured.

  96. God,

  97. at the start of this message,

  98. is saying that,

  99. Mary,

  100. you are highly favoured.

  101. I'm going to show my grace to you,

  102. unmerited favour.

  103. This is amazing,

  104. that God would show His grace,

  105. His unmerited favour to anyone,

  106. let alone a 15-year-old girl

  107. who could not have done anything to deserve it.

  108. Mary responds to this announcement,

  109. verse 29,

  110. Mary was greatly troubled at His words,

  111. and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

  112. She doesn't immediately respond with joy.

  113. She doesn't say,

  114. wow,

  115. I've been greatly favoured by God,

  116. I've got to go and tell everybody.

  117. She's troubled.

  118. She has an emotional response.

  119. She's trying to understand

  120. what this message is

  121. that the angelic being has brought to her.

  122. Why am I highly favoured by God?

  123. Why has God shown His grace to me?

  124. Why would the Lord show His favour to me?

  125. But it's not about her being special.

  126. It's about God being gracious.

  127. The God who chooses to love and show His grace,

  128. even to unlikely people.

  129. The angel continues in verse 30,

  130. Do not be afraid, Mary,

  131. you have found favour with God.

  132. You will conceive and give birth to a son,

  133. and you are to call Him Jesus.

  134. He will be great,

  135. and He will be called the Son of the Most High.

  136. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David,

  137. and He will reign over Jacob's descendants forever.

  138. His kingdom will never end.

  139. If she was confused and troubled

  140. about being favoured by God,

  141. imagine her now.

  142. You're saying that I'm not only favoured by God,

  143. but that before I,

  144. and that's even before I get married,

  145. I'm going to be pregnant with a baby,

  146. and that that baby is going to be the long-expected Emmanuel,

  147. God with us,

  148. who's going to rule forever.

  149. It's no wonder Mary responds to this amazing news

  150. with surprise and with questions.

  151. Verse 34,

  152. Now, this is not a sign of doubt.

  153. She's trying to understand God's good news to her.

  154. But even before she can get to the theological implications

  155. of the descendant of David coming,

  156. of God's Son Himself, Jesus coming,

  157. before she can get to those implications,

  158. she's asking very practical questions.

  159. God, how is this going to work?

  160. I'm not married yet.

  161. How am I supposed to have a baby?

  162. She doesn't dismiss the good news because it's crazy,

  163. but she's asking God,

  164. help me understand your plan.

  165. God, how is this going to work?

  166. And the angel clarifies,

  167. the Holy Spirit will come on you,

  168. and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

  169. And the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

  170. Even Elizabeth, your relative,

  171. is going to have a child in her old age.

  172. Mary is given an explanation and a piece of proof.

  173. Elizabeth, her very old relative,

  174. will also have a miraculous birth.

  175. I think this is actually a really wonderful piece of news

  176. and a piece of proof for Mary.

  177. I think it's really wonderful.

  178. God has placed her in a situation

  179. which no one will understand.

  180. So she's going to be pregnant.

  181. Her fiancé is not going to understand it.

  182. Her parents aren't going to understand it.

  183. The society around her is all going to be questioning

  184. why this young, unmarried woman is pregnant.

  185. How can this be?

  186. Sure, you've said it's from God.

  187. I'm not sure we believe you.

  188. And yet God directs her to Elizabeth.

  189. She also is going to have a miraculous birth.

  190. People also wouldn't have been able to believe

  191. that she was pregnant,

  192. and yet she was six months pregnant.

  193. God puts this into her hands

  194. because Elizabeth will understand.

  195. She's the only person who would.

  196. And the angel calls on her to trust God's word.

  197. No word from God will fail.

  198. And Mary responds, wise beyond her years.

  199. Verse 38,

  200. I am the Lord's servant.

  201. May your word to me be fulfilled.

  202. I just think her response is wonderful.

  203. God, I'm going to trust you.

  204. I've got questions,

  205. but I'm not going to be afraid.

  206. I am your servant,

  207. and I'm going to trust you.

  208. After this, Mary goes to visit her relative.

  209. And when she's there,

  210. she responds to all that God is doing,

  211. and she sings a song called the Magnificat,

  212. where she praises and gives glory to God.

  213. She rejoices.

  214. She says,

  215. My soul glorifies the Lord,

  216. and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

  217. She is rejoicing.

  218. She is praising God.

  219. And Mary, just in these very short verses,

  220. has gone on this wonderful journey.

  221. She started at the good news,

  222. troubled.

  223. She was troubled,

  224. unsure of this news.

  225. She questions the angel,

  226. and then she places her trust in God's word,

  227. and finally rejoices with praise.

  228. I remember where I was when I first heard the news about 9-11.

  229. I remember I was sitting in high school.

  230. It was year 11,

  231. and a mate of mine was listening on the radio,

  232. and he was giving me live updates of what was happening.

  233. I remember hearing for the first time the full implications of COVID.

  234. Last year,

  235. I was camping.

  236. I was out in the middle of nowhere in a tent.

  237. I got a call from Steve,

  238. saying,

  239. things have gotten serious.

  240. Even church is going to have to lock down.

  241. We have some parts of news that just shape our lives,

  242. and that are very memorable.

  243. Do you remember the first time that the news of Jesus interrupted your life?

  244. How much has it shaped your life since then?

  245. Or maybe this is the first time that you're actually considering this news

  246. of the Son of God coming,

  247. that God would show unmerited favor and grace

  248. on unworthy people like Mary and like you and me,

  249. that God became a person to bring salvation,

  250. that this news was life-changing for Mary,

  251. but also for us.

  252. This is news that we can't ignore.

  253. And just like hearing about COVID that impacts everybody,

  254. we can't pretend that the news of Jesus isn't for us.

  255. We can't just say it's for someone else.

  256. This message is for all people.

  257. God sent His Son, Jesus,

  258. for all people to be able to know and follow Him,

  259. because one day we will stand before Him.

  260. Now, you may have responded to this like Mary,

  261. being troubled at the news.

  262. And I think this is a good and rational response.

  263. We should be troubled at this news.

  264. Someone I know is dying of cancer at the moment.

  265. And they don't want to talk about death.

  266. They don't want to face the reality.

  267. They don't want to use that big D word of death.

  268. They're just placing their trust and their hope in doctors.

  269. The doctors are going to fix it.

  270. I don't have to think about my future.

  271. The doctors have got it sorted.

  272. But that would be like, you know,

  273. thinking that COVID is not going to impact our lives,

  274. or being on the Titanic that's going down,

  275. and ignoring the calls to jump into a lifeboat.

  276. Each of us need to consider our future

  277. and what this news means for us.

  278. We should be troubled by this news.

  279. Troubled that we are in so desperate need,

  280. God would have to come Himself.

  281. We need God to favour us.

  282. And the wonderful good news of the Bible

  283. is that He does.

  284. He has chosen to show His grace and His favour.

  285. If this is news to you,

  286. come and talk to me.

  287. If you're still considering this,

  288. talk to the person next to you.

  289. Talk to the person that you're with.

  290. Because I believe that

  291. we can respond to this news like Mary.

  292. We can place our trust in Jesus.

  293. In God.

  294. And that is the way,

  295. just like Mary,

  296. to have joy.

  297. To rejoice at what God is doing.

  298. Joy even in a broken world.

  299. But what if this is old news?

  300. What if this is a message

  301. we've all heard before?

  302. What if, you know,

  303. it doesn't actually seem that exciting anymore?

  304. It doesn't have that same, you know,

  305. hit of adrenaline or a dopamine rush

  306. when I'm flicking through Twitter

  307. that I get.

  308. It doesn't seem to be

  309. life-changing joy anymore.

  310. I think Mary's response

  311. to hearing the good news

  312. is helpful for us

  313. as we consider the old news.

  314. I think it is helpful for us

  315. to consider what it is

  316. to be troubled by this news.

  317. To question God

  318. and then to trust in Him

  319. and finally to rejoice.

  320. Starting with troubled.

  321. Mary, when she heard this message

  322. from the angel,

  323. she was troubled.

  324. He said to her

  325. that she was greatly favoured.

  326. If you're feeling like

  327. the news of Christmas

  328. isn't that new

  329. or interesting anymore,

  330. I want to encourage you

  331. to sit in this.

  332. Because God says to us

  333. the same thing.

  334. Sure, we haven't had

  335. an angel visit us

  336. and say,

  337. hey, you're highly favoured.

  338. We have God saying that

  339. to us in His Word.

  340. Ephesians 1, 7 says,

  341. In Him we have redemption

  342. through His blood,

  343. the forgiveness of sins

  344. in accordance with the riches

  345. of God's grace.

  346. God shows His grace,

  347. His unmerited favour

  348. to each of us.

  349. And this should trouble us.

  350. This should disturb us.

  351. It's news that should shake us

  352. out of a mundane faith

  353. because it's easy

  354. to get used to Christmas

  355. that Jesus became a baby.

  356. It's easy to get used

  357. to this news

  358. and just go through

  359. a process of coming to church

  360. week in and week out

  361. and forget how amazing

  362. and radical

  363. and troubling this news is.

  364. Sometimes though,

  365. God will creep up on us

  366. and remind us

  367. of this great truth.

  368. Particularly when we've been

  369. doing the wrong thing.

  370. When we've been sinning.

  371. When we've hurt someone else.

  372. And we realise,

  373. oh, I am despicable.

  374. I am sinful.

  375. And yet,

  376. Ephesians 1 verse 7,

    Ephesians 1:7

  377. God has shown

  378. His immeasurable riches

  379. in His grace to me.

  380. I don't deserve anything good

  381. from God

  382. and yet He chooses

  383. to love me.

  384. Be reminded

  385. of this truth from Ephesians 1,

  386. this word from Mary,

  387. God has poured out

  388. His unmerited grace on us.

  389. One of my favourite TV shows

  390. of the past years

  391. is a TV show called

  392. Ted Lasso.

  393. Not sure if you've seen it.

  394. One of the characters

  395. in this show

  396. attempted to ruin

  397. this main character,

  398. Ted Lasso's life.

  399. But when they realised

  400. what they've done,

  401. they came and apologised to Ted.

  402. And He just says,

  403. I forgive you.

  404. The other person

  405. cannot believe it

  406. and they are brought

  407. to tears.

  408. God has shown

  409. His amazing grace,

  410. His amazing favour

  411. to us.

  412. He says

  413. far more than forgiveness.

  414. He doesn't just forgive us,

  415. but He chooses

  416. to show His riches

  417. to us.

  418. His love

  419. that He would bring us

  420. into His family.

  421. He says,

  422. you are more precious

  423. to me.

  424. God has shown

  425. His amazing favour

  426. that He would

  427. choose you

  428. and me,

  429. sinful enemies of God.

  430. That He would shine

  431. His face on us.

  432. We should be troubled

  433. by this.

  434. We should be stirred

  435. deep inside,

  436. reminded that we

  437. do not deserve it

  438. and it should remind us

  439. of how great

  440. and wonderful

  441. our God is

  442. and our need

  443. and our dependence

  444. on Him.

  445. Secondly,

  446. I think this news

  447. for us is really helpful

  448. because it reminds us

  449. that it is good

  450. to question God.

  451. We can keep bringing

  452. our questions to Him.

  453. James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  454. reminds us

  455. that if any of us

  456. lack wisdom

  457. to ask God

  458. and He gives generously

  459. to all

  460. without reproach.

  461. Asking questions

  462. is not a sign

  463. of a lack of faith.

  464. We can take

  465. our questions to Him.

  466. He's bigger than

  467. our questions.

  468. He is sovereign.

  469. We can be asking

  470. questions like,

  471. God,

  472. how am I ever

  473. going to stop

  474. sinning like this?

  475. God,

  476. how will my family,

  477. my friends

  478. ever come to know

  479. and love you,

  480. Lord?

  481. God,

  482. I'm really worried

  483. about what's happening

  484. at the moment.

  485. I'm really worried

  486. about case numbers

  487. in Sydney.

  488. I'm really worried

  489. about COVID.

  490. God,

  491. I'm suffering

  492. right now.

  493. God is big enough

  494. for these questions.

  495. Now,

  496. God may speak

  497. directly or even

  498. through an angel,

  499. but as the angel

  500. said to Mary,

  501. God's word

  502. doesn't fail.

  503. We have His word

  504. and He promises

  505. that He is sovereign.

  506. He is in control

  507. today and tomorrow

  508. and He is with us.

  509. So let me encourage you

  510. to be troubled

  511. by this good news.

  512. Be encouraged

  513. to take

  514. your questions

  515. to Him

  516. and then

  517. each day

  518. respond to the good news

  519. of the gospel

  520. by choosing

  521. to trust in Him.

  522. Trust that what God

  523. has said about our tomorrow,

  524. that He is sovereign

  525. for tomorrow,

  526. that He has a plan.

  527. Trust in that.

  528. Trust that His way

  529. and His plans

  530. are better than anything

  531. that we could come up with.

  532. And then finally,

  533. to rejoice

  534. with Mary

  535. at this news.

  536. Rejoice

  537. that God

  538. would save

  539. of people

  540. like us.

  541. If you're feeling

  542. not excited

  543. by this news,

  544. this good news

  545. of Jesus,

  546. be troubled,

  547. take your questions

  548. to God,

  549. trust in Him

  550. and then we can rejoice.

  551. We can rejoice

  552. because we don't need

  553. to worry about tomorrow.

  554. God has it sorted.

  555. Lamentations 3

  556. says,

  557. When we daily

  558. remind ourselves

  559. of God's mercies,

  560. they are new.

  561. His gospel

  562. is new to us.

  563. Then the old news

  564. doesn't actually seem

  565. old anymore.

  566. It is new.

  567. It is amazing.

  568. It is life-giving.

  569. I have been

  570. married to my wife

  571. Alyssa now

  572. for almost 15 years.

  573. And I remember

  574. the first time

  575. that we said

  576. I love you

  577. to each other.

  578. I reminded her

  579. of this the other day

  580. and it turns out

  581. she can't remember it.

  582. I am very glad

  583. I can still remember it though.

  584. And I said it,

  585. it was on a train

  586. between our houses.

  587. We lived about

  588. an hour apart

  589. and I said it to her

  590. on the train

  591. and there was

  592. a very short pause

  593. where my heart

  594. was in my mouth

  595. and then she responded

  596. with those

  597. three little words.

  598. But I remember

  599. thinking

  600. what is she going

  601. to say?

  602. Do I get off

  603. the train now

  604. at whatever stop

  605. this is?

  606. Is she going

  607. to run away

  608. or is she going

  609. to say I love you

  610. back?

  611. And it was wonderful

  612. news when she did

  613. say it back to me.

  614. But since that time

  615. let's say

  616. that she has

  617. either said

  618. those words

  619. or texted me

  620. those words

  621. every second day.

  622. That would be

  623. over two and a half

  624. thousand times

  625. that I've heard that.

  626. It is not news

  627. to me anymore

  628. that she loves me.

  629. I'm pretty sure

  630. I've gotten used

  631. to that idea.

  632. But why haven't

  633. I said to her

  634. stop telling me.

  635. I don't need

  636. that information.

  637. It's not news

  638. to me anymore.

  639. I'm actually really

  640. bored by that piece

  641. of information.

  642. Can't you tell me

  643. something new

  644. and exciting?

  645. It's probably

  646. not the wisest

  647. thing to say

  648. to her.

  649. And yet

  650. every day

  651. when she says

  652. those words

  653. it's new.

  654. After we've had

  655. an argument

  656. or if there's

  657. been pain

  658. and conflict

  659. and I hear

  660. those words

  661. it reminds me

  662. that we're okay.

  663. That we're on

  664. the same side

  665. that we're on

  666. the same team

  667. that we're going

  668. in the same

  669. direction.

  670. Those words

  671. have meaning

  672. because of

  673. the relationship.

  674. How much

  675. more so

  676. with God

  677. when we hear

  678. the news

  679. again

  680. that God

  681. loves us

  682. enough

  683. that he

  684. sent

  685. Jesus.

  686. We need

  687. to hear it

  688. again

  689. after we've

  690. sinned.

  691. After we feel

  692. distant from

  693. him

  694. because it

  695. reminds us

  696. of how great

  697. his love

  698. for you

  699. is

  700. for me

  701. is.

  702. I need

  703. to hear it.

  704. We need

  705. to hear it

  706. when we're

  707. lost

  708. or lonely

  709. or when we're

  710. far from

  711. home.

  712. We need

  713. to hear

  714. this good

  715. news

  716. of the

  717. gospel

  718. of Jesus

  719. coming

  720. when I'm

  721. questioning

  722. God

  723. when we're

  724. wondering

  725. about the

  726. season of

  727. life in

  728. because it

  729. reminds us

  730. of the good

  731. news that

  732. he is

  733. sovereign

  734. he is in

  735. control of

  736. all things

  737. and then we

  738. can rejoice.

  739. Let me

  740. pray.

  741. Heavenly

  742. Father

  743. we thank

  744. you for

  745. this good

  746. news.

  747. Lord I

  748. ask that

  749. it would

  750. be news

  751. to us

  752. again

  753. today.

  754. That it

  755. would not

  756. just be

  757. information

  758. but it

  759. would be

  760. news that

  761. leads to

  762. our lives

  763. being

  764. transformed

  765. to trust

  766. in you

  767. to rejoice

  768. with you

  769. and all of

  770. your goodness

  771. to us

  772. Lord.

  773. Amen.
