  1. It's not clear who invented the first microscope,

  2. but around 1600, the Dutch spectacle maker Zacharias Janssen

  3. is credited with making one of the earliest compound microscopes,

  4. ones that used two lenses.

  5. The development of the microscope opened a whole new world of discovery,

  6. allowing scientists to make new insights into the body, disease,

  7. and to see the intricacies of creation.

  8. One such discovery, laminin.

  9. Fun fact, laminin protein is the cell adhesive molecule

  10. that holds our cells together.

  11. Under a microscope, we see it is shaped like a cross.

  12. Last week, we stood and declared what it is we believe,

  13. based on Colossians 1 and verse 17.

  14. Jesus is before all things, and in him all things are held together.

  15. It's crazy how scientific discovery has allowed us to see God's blueprint

  16. for holding the body together.

  17. Laminin.

  18. It's shaped like a cross.

  19. And as we know, the cross connects us to God

  20. and holds us together as one body in Christ.

  21. Is that a coincidence?

  22. Well, back to why I mentioned a microscope.

  23. As Christians, we are under ever-growing scrutiny.

  24. People are vigilantly pulling out the microscope

  25. and interrogating Christians under a magnifying glass,

  26. trying to catch us out.

  27. People want to see our lives matching our faith and belief in Jesus.

  28. And fair enough, really.

  29. As soon as we slip up, people are ready to pounce.

  30. I heard a Christian say this.

  31. I saw a Christian do that.

  32. You wouldn't believe it.

  33. Of course we will fail.

  34. Our human nature is sinful.

  35. It makes me feel better when Christians fail.

  36. I think possibly...

  37. It doesn't make me feel better, sorry,

  38. but it makes other people who aren't Christians feel better.

  39. And I think possibly so they can justify their own disbelief

  40. or their own sinfulness

  41. or maybe feel self-righteous about their own behaviour.

  42. But we are different.

  43. We have a clear understanding and conviction

  44. of the total depravity of our hearts.

  45. We are drawn to God's irresistible grace

  46. and unconditional love,

  47. knowing that if we humble ourselves,

  48. we are forgiven through Jesus.

  49. Christianity isn't a club for good people.

  50. It's a hospital for broken sinners

  51. who need a life overhaul, healing transformation.

  52. How is Jesus impacting our lives?

  53. This new year, we've been looking at Jesus' upside-down kingdom

  54. revealed in the Sermon on the Mount.

  55. The last two weeks,

  56. the Beatitudes, blessings,

  57. or congratulations

  58. go to those who have the complete attitude of Jesus.

  59. We can't have one or a couple

  60. who have the whole attitude of Jesus.

  61. There's no escaping it.

  62. We are under the microscope.

  63. We need our lives

  64. and our love for Jesus

  65. to shine

  66. and we need them to match our calling.

  67. Today, we're considering Jesus' call

  68. to be salt and light in the world.

  69. Before I unpack this,

  70. remember,

  71. when Jesus spoke,

  72. there were no verses.

  73. It's one giant speech.

  74. We can dissect it into fragments,

  75. but we still need to see the big picture.

  76. So while we may focus on a handful of verses,

  77. we need to see what's going on around these

  78. to build context and meaning.

  79. In Matthew 5, verses 13 to 16,

    Matthew 5:13–16

  80. Jesus calls us to be different.

  81. You are the salt of the earth,

  82. but if the salt loses its saltiness,

  83. how can it be made salty again?

  84. It is no longer good for anything

  85. except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

  86. You are the light of the world.

  87. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

  88. Neither do people light a lamp

  89. and put it under a bowl.

  90. Instead, they put it on its stand

  91. and it gives light to everyone in the house.

  92. In the same way,

  93. let your light shine before all people

  94. that they may see your good deeds

  95. and praise your Father in heaven.

  96. Jesus uses the metaphor of salt and light

  97. to describe how we should live in this world.

  98. This follows directly after Jesus

  99. has rattled off the Beatitudes.

  100. In other words,

  101. if we live with the beautiful attitudes of Jesus,

  102. we will be salt and light in the world.

  103. And after the salt and light metaphor,

  104. Jesus continues taking the Ten Commandments

  105. to the next level

  106. and concludes actually with a phrase

  107. in verse 48 of chapter 5,

  108. be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.

  109. Jesus is presenting to those

  110. who are willing to participate in his kingdom

  111. a very difficult task,

  112. a standard in the way we relate to one another,

  113. and it's not being a good person,

  114. it's perfection.

  115. So before we panic,

  116. remember the Christian message

  117. is not about work salvation,

  118. about doing things to be saved.

  119. The good news is stop trying

  120. and start trusting.

  121. Jesus did what we can't do.

  122. He alone meets God's impossible standards.

  123. Jesus who did not come to abolish the law,

  124. but to fulfil it.

  125. Then, once we're right with God,

  126. we're then to be salt and light in the world,

  127. with Jesus as our foundation.

  128. Motivated by love for Jesus

  129. and love for others,

  130. what follows is good works.

  131. And Jesus later goes on to say,

  132. this is the fruit of what you believe.

  133. So the significance of salt and light,

  134. the imagery,

  135. let's draw that out

  136. and let's start with salt.

  137. Salt is essential.

  138. Our bodies require salt

  139. as an element in our diet.

  140. Salt was a vital necessity

  141. for everyday life.

  142. Taken in this way,

  143. Jesus indicates his followers

  144. are vitally important

  145. to the welfare of this world

  146. with their daily presence

  147. and their message.

  148. Salt preserves.

  149. Before people had fridges and freezers,

  150. food was salted to preserve it.

  151. The salt stopped decay.

  152. Jesus wants his followers

  153. to work to preserve

  154. all that is good in our world.

  155. As the world turns even more rotten,

  156. Christians are to have the effect

  157. of delaying moral and spiritual decay.

  158. Salt is valuable.

  159. It was extremely expensive

  160. and labour-intensive

  161. to harvest the mass quantities of salt

  162. necessary for food preservation

  163. and seasoning.

  164. Salt was used as currency

  165. in Jesus' day

  166. and for centuries.

  167. What value can we place on our soul?

  168. Jesus alone

  169. has the words of eternal life.

  170. Salt has value.

  171. Salt is pure.

  172. Many people in ancient times

  173. thought salt was pure

  174. just because of its colour.

  175. It's pure white.

  176. Jesus wants his followers

  177. to have hearts that are pure.

  178. There's high standards

  179. in our thoughts,

  180. our speech,

  181. and our actions.

  182. Salt is seasoning.

  183. Salt enhances the flavour of food.

  184. It makes it taste more interesting.

  185. Try eating chips without salt

  186. to get it.

  187. Knowing Jesus gives life.

  188. It's life to the full

  189. and makes it meaningful.

  190. Jesus wants his followers

  191. to make life more pleasant

  192. for others.

  193. Salt protects.

  194. Salt scattered on roads

  195. melts ice

  196. and makes conditions safe.

  197. In biblical times,

  198. salt was even put on manure heaps

  199. to stop the spread of germs.

  200. Jesus wants his followers

  201. to spread the good news about him

  202. to everyone they meet

  203. and so offer the protection

  204. of God's love to everyone.

  205. Salt was actually used

  206. in small quantities

  207. as a fertiliser

  208. when applied to certain types of soil.

  209. Jesus' disciples

  210. will enhance

  211. the growth of God's work

  212. in this world.

  213. Jesus likens his followers

  214. to salt.

  215. Essential,

  216. valuable,

  217. pure,

  218. preserving,

  219. seasoning,

  220. pleasant,

  221. protecting,

  222. bringing growth.

  223. If our lives

  224. are like salt,

  225. Christians cannot help

  226. but be an influence

  227. for good in society

  228. and history shows this.

  229. Hospitals,

  230. schools,

  231. aged care facilities,

  232. care of the homeless,

  233. orphanages,

  234. abolition of slavery,

  235. worldwide literacy programs.

  236. Christians have been

  237. at the forefront

  238. of these initiatives.

  239. The second metaphor

  240. Jesus uses

  241. to describe

  242. the Christian witness

  243. in the world

  244. is that of light.

  245. Have you ever been

  246. in a place

  247. that is so dark

  248. you actually can't even

  249. see your hand

  250. in front of your face?

  251. When I was in year nine

  252. we were taken

  253. to Currie Currie

  254. on a geography excursion

  255. and I was one of a handful

  256. picked to go down

  257. a mine.

  258. We were in a few

  259. kilometres underground

  260. and we had the

  261. safety helmets

  262. with the torches on top.

  263. At one point

  264. they asked us all

  265. to switch the torches off

  266. and it was eerie.

  267. I'd never been

  268. in something so pitch black.

  269. We left them off

  270. for a while

  271. even as our eyes adjusted

  272. we couldn't see anything

  273. and then further down

  274. in the mine shaft

  275. some other miners

  276. were coming

  277. and just a glimpse

  278. of their light

  279. before it actually

  280. the full blown light

  281. appeared

  282. was enough to start

  283. to illuminate

  284. the darkness.

  285. If we're to be

  286. light in the world

  287. the implication

  288. is that the world

  289. is actually shrouded

  290. in darkness

  291. thick darkness

  292. blind to Jesus' identity.

  293. We are witnesses

  294. for Jesus

  295. we need to shine

  296. God's light

  297. so that those

  298. stumbling through life

  299. in spiritual darkness

  300. can come into

  301. the safety of the light.

  302. Jesus talks about

  303. two sources of light here

  304. the light from

  305. the city on a hill

  306. and the light

  307. from a lamp.

  308. You are

  309. the light of the world

  310. a city on a hill

  311. cannot be hidden

  312. neither do people

  313. light a lamp

  314. and put it under a bowl

  315. instead they put it

  316. on its stand

  317. and it gives light

  318. to everyone

  319. in the house.

  320. We should be able

  321. to picture these images

  322. if you've done

  323. some long driving

  324. stints out in the country

  325. it can be really dark

  326. but before you get

  327. to the next town

  328. you see it coming

  329. from a distance

  330. because of the glow

  331. reflecting onto the sky.

  332. In ancient times

  333. darkness and light

  334. would have been absolutes

  335. there was no electricity

  336. but you could still

  337. make out the glow

  338. of a city

  339. when navigating

  340. the deserts.

  341. Imagining a world

  342. without light

  343. we can understand

  344. how darkness

  345. can be a terror

  346. and a symbol of evil.

  347. Imagine walking

  348. through a park at night

  349. and I've actually done this

  350. I've actually put the keys

  351. between my fingers

  352. feeling worried

  353. for myself.

  354. The same goes

  355. for hiding a lamp

  356. under a bush.

  357. By modern standards

  358. a lamp doesn't cast

  359. a great amount of light

  360. but if the alternative

  361. is pitch darkness

  362. to distinguish

  363. or cut off the light

  364. it seems ludicrous.

  365. Darkness

  366. things can be hidden

  367. but in the light

  368. things are revealed.

  369. A light

  370. is a guide.

  371. Like in the tunnel

  372. of the coal mine

  373. we needed light.

  374. Lights are used

  375. to guide people

  376. and indicate

  377. the safest direction.

  378. Jesus wants

  379. his followers

  380. to act as guides.

  381. He wants them

  382. to point others

  383. to Jesus

  384. the way

  385. the truth

  386. and the life

  387. and show others

  388. the best way

  389. to live.

  390. A light

  391. is a warning.

  392. Many lights

  393. act as warnings.

  394. Flashing lights

  395. on ambulances

  396. fire engines

  397. the police

  398. lighthouses.

  399. Christians

  400. need to warn

  401. the world

  402. the judgement

  403. is coming

  404. and without Jesus

  405. there is no

  406. prospect

  407. of eternal life.

  408. Light is effective

  409. illuminating darkness.

  410. Without light

  411. there are many things

  412. that we would not

  413. be able to do.

  414. Drive at night

  415. read in bed

  416. and there's all kinds

  417. of accidents

  418. and mischief

  419. that take place

  420. under the cloak

  421. of darkness.

  422. Crimes tend

  423. to happen

  424. at night.

  425. Light increases

  426. our enjoyment

  427. of life

  428. but more importantly

  429. it chases away

  430. the darkness.

  431. Without Jesus

  432. the light

  433. of the world

  434. we shipwreck

  435. our lives.

  436. Jesus wants

  437. his followers

  438. to chase away

  439. sin and darkness

  440. in their own lives

  441. and around them.

  442. Light

  443. is essential.

  444. Plants

  445. need light

  446. in order to grow.

  447. People also

  448. need sunlight

  449. for health

  450. and strength.

  451. We need a good

  452. dose of vitamin D.

  453. They also need

  454. to know

  455. the light

  456. of Christ

  457. in order

  458. to live life

  459. to the full.

  460. Jesus wants

  461. his followers

  462. to shed

  463. the light

  464. of God's love

  465. into the lives

  466. of those

  467. they meet.

  468. A light

  469. should not

  470. be hidden.

  471. A light

  472. that is hidden

  473. is of no help

  474. at all.

  475. Imagine what

  476. would happen

  477. if a set

  478. of traffic lights

  479. were under

  480. a blanket

  481. or a lighthouse

  482. on the clifftops

  483. was extinguished.

  484. Lights

  485. are meant

  486. to be shown

  487. to good advantage.

  488. There is no place

  489. for a quiet

  490. shy

  491. hidden

  492. personal faith.

  493. Jesus wants

  494. us to be open

  495. about the fact

  496. that we follow

  497. him

  498. otherwise

  499. we are of no

  500. use to others.

  501. Be salt

  502. and let your

  503. light shine.

  504. Jesus then

  505. takes it to the

  506. next level

  507. and we glimpse

  508. how upside down

  509. God's kingdom

  510. really is

  511. while further

  512. drawing out

  513. the implications

  514. of what salt

  515. and light

  516. really look like.

  517. Referring to

  518. the Mosaic

  519. law

  520. Jesus says

  521. you've heard

  522. it said

  523. long ago

  524. do you remember

  525. this?

  526. You've heard

  527. it said

  528. long ago

  529. and then he

  530. lists off

  531. a handful

  532. of commandments

  533. do not

  534. murder

  535. most people

  536. can say

  537. great

  538. that's not

  539. me

  540. I haven't

  541. murdered

  542. Jesus

  543. then declares

  544. that anyone

  545. who harbours

  546. anger in their

  547. heart

  548. or even

  549. calls someone

  550. a fool

  551. receives the

  552. same judgment

  553. as a murderer

  554. okay that's

  555. pretty much

  556. everyone

  557. and it does

  558. seem a bit

  559. extreme

  560. do not

  561. commit adultery

  562. you've heard

  563. it once said

  564. do not

  565. commit adultery

  566. everyone goes

  567. yeah we've

  568. heard that

  569. well we may

  570. be hearing

  571. more of this

  572. in society

  573. it is still

  574. frowned upon

  575. by most people

  576. no matter what

  577. their belief

  578. system

  579. and so

  580. you hear this

  581. and if you've

  582. never done this

  583. you go

  584. well good

  585. I'm a good

  586. person

  587. tick

  588. I haven't

  589. done that

  590. but Jesus

  591. then goes

  592. to the next

  593. level

  594. he says

  595. if you've

  596. looked at

  597. someone

  598. lustfully

  599. you've

  600. committed

  601. adultery

  602. in your

  603. heart

  604. now that

  605. seems pretty

  606. extreme

  607. and I'm

  608. pretty sure

  609. that covers

  610. most everyone

  611. so they're

  612. starting to

  613. think well

  614. murder

  615. anger

  616. adultery

  617. lust

  618. oh hang

  619. on Jesus

  620. this is

  621. an impossible

  622. standard

  623. let's go

  624. up a level

  625. love your

  626. enemies

  627. say what

  628. Jesus

  629. now you've

  630. gone too

  631. far

  632. Israel

  633. was under

  634. Roman

  635. occupation

  636. this was

  637. God's

  638. promised

  639. land

  640. and you

  641. want us

  642. to go

  643. to extra

  644. mile

  645. you want

  646. us to

  647. turn the

  648. other

  649. cheek

  650. you want

  651. them to

  652. us to

  653. give our

  654. tunic

  655. you want

  656. us to

  657. lend

  658. willingly

  659. this is

  660. outrageous

  661. Jesus

  662. and when

  663. you give

  664. to the

  665. needy

  666. he goes

  667. on

  668. don't

  669. make a

  670. show of

  671. it

  672. do it

  673. humbly

  674. in secret

  675. no giant

  676. checks

  677. and big

  678. TV coverage

  679. do it

  680. in humility

  681. and don't

  682. boast

  683. you need

  684. to forgive

  685. as your

  686. heavenly father

  687. has forgiven

  688. you

  689. that's

  690. unmerited

  691. it's

  692. unconditional

  693. loving

  694. others

  695. but hang

  696. on

  697. God

  698. please

  699. there's

  700. some

  701. people

  702. that have

  703. just

  704. rubbed me

  705. up the

  706. wrong

  707. way

  708. they've

  709. just

  710. pushed

  711. it too

  712. far

  713. they're

  714. just

  715. too

  716. hard

  717. to

  718. forgive

  719. don't

  720. worry

  721. as

  722. God

  723. looks

  724. after

  725. the

  726. birds

  727. in the

  728. air

  729. and the

  730. flowers

  731. in the

  732. field

  733. how much

  734. more

  735. will he

  736. look

  737. after

  738. us

  739. so

  740. don't

  741. worry

  742. but hang

  743. on

  744. Jesus

  745. I've

  746. just

  747. lost

  748. my

  749. job

  750. and

  751. we've

  752. got

  753. this

  754. huge

  755. mortgage

  756. how are

  757. we're

  758. going to

  759. pay

  760. that

  761. off

  762. don't

  763. judge

  764. others

  765. in the

  766. same

  767. way

  768. you

  769. judge

  770. you

  771. will

  772. be

  773. judged

  774. we're

  775. in such

  776. a

  777. judgy

  778. age

  779. at the

  780. moment

  781. people

  782. just

  783. desperate

  784. to get

  785. likes

  786. on

  787. insta

  788. the

  789. big

  790. pile

  791. on

  792. that

  793. takes

  794. place

  795. when

  796. people

  797. are

  798. cancelled

  799. that's

  800. a

  801. judgment

  802. and

  803. people

  804. are

  805. ruthless

  806. Jesus

  807. standard

  808. is the

  809. next

  810. level

  811. if

  812. we're

  813. going

  814. to be

  815. genuine

  816. followers

  817. of

  818. Jesus

  819. we

  820. need

  821. changing

  822. Jesus

  823. presents

  824. us

  825. presents

  826. us

  827. with a

  828. very

  829. difficult

  830. task

  831. a

  832. standard

  833. in the

  834. way

  835. we

  836. relate

  837. to

  838. one

  839. another

  840. and that

  841. standard

  842. is

  843. 100%

  844. reliant

  845. on

  846. God

  847. caring

  848. for

  849. the

  850. poor

  851. and

  852. needy

  853. being

  854. humble

  855. pure

  856. in

  857. heart

  858. meek

  859. peace

  860. loving

  861. persecuted

  862. for

  863. righteousness

  864. loving

  865. enemies

  866. forgiving

  867. not

  868. worrying

  869. not

  870. judging

  871. not

  872. boasting

  873. about

  874. giving

  875. basically

  876. being

  877. salt

  878. and the

  879. light of

  880. Jesus

  881. in the

  882. world

  883. when

  884. the

  885. light of

  886. light of

  887. Jesus

  888. and his

  889. love

  890. shines

  891. through

  892. Christian

  893. deeds

  894. they do

  895. expose

  896. darkness

  897. for what

  898. it is

  899. evil

  900. and

  901. estranged

  902. from

  903. God

  904. here's

  905. another

  906. reason

  907. Christians

  908. experience

  909. persecution

  910. just as

  911. we

  912. cringe

  913. or cover

  914. our

  915. eyes

  916. when a

  917. bright

  918. light

  919. hits

  920. us

  921. in the

  922. eyes

  923. and

  924. just

  925. think

  926. of

  927. driving

  928. at

  929. night

  930. and

  931. someone's

  932. high

  933. beam

  934. when

  935. we

  936. are

  937. salt

  938. and

  939. light

  940. in

  941. the

  942. world

  943. it

  944. can

  945. draw

  946. attention

  947. to

  948. sinful

  949. behaviour

  950. biblical

  951. Christianity

  952. doesn't

  953. win a

  954. popularity

  955. contest

  956. I

  957. could

  958. think

  959. of

  960. times

  961. when

  962. I've

  963. been

  964. at

  965. parties

  966. and

  967. I've

  968. been

  969. talking

  970. with

  971. someone

  972. and

  973. eventually

  974. they say

  975. oh so what do you do for a living

  976. I say I'm a minister

  977. and they go oh what political party are you with

  978. and then when I say I'm a Christian

  979. there's this awkward pause

  980. sometimes a bit of an uncomfortable silence

  981. some discomfort

  982. and then it's almost like you can see in their mind

  983. they're going through

  984. what have I just said

  985. oh I've just been swearing

  986. or blaspheming

  987. and a lot of people start to apologise

  988. for me

  989. to me

  990. and

  991. some even sort of politely go

  992. oh

  993. the others

  994. just got to go and make this

  995. yeah they excuse themselves

  996. Jesus

  997. and by association

  998. Christianity

  999. spotlight things

1000. and actually this is Jesus' verdict

1001. light has come into the world

1002. but people love darkness instead of light

1003. because their deeds are evil

1004. everyone who does evil hates the light

1005. and will not come into the light

1006. for fear that their deeds will be exposed

1007. whoever lives by the truth comes into the light

1008. so that it may be seen plainly

1009. that what they have done

1010. has been done through God

  1011. Jesus warns

  1012. the world

1013. does not like the light

  1014. it likes the darkness

  1015. but don't sell out

  1016. don't lose your saltiness

1017. and don't hide your light

1018. can salt lose its saltiness?

1019. well because salt by its very nature

1020. cannot be anything other than salt

1021. it cannot lose its property of salt

1022. but it can be sufficiently ruined

  1023. rendering it useless

1024. for example if you mix it with sand

1025. you won't discern the salt

1026. and so it loses its saltiness

  1027. likewise

  1028. when Christians conform

  1029. to the immoral

  1030. materialistic patterns

  1031. of this world

1032. our witness can be rendered ineffective

1033. we can lose our saltiness

  1034. the purpose of salt

  1035. is to fight

  1036. deterioration

1037. the worse the world becomes

  1038. the more corrupt

  1039. the more it stands

1040. in need of Jesus' followers

  1041. when we fail

1042. and it happens to all of us

  1043. remember there is grace

1044. we all need God's grace

1045. the Sermon on the Mount

  1046. is challenging

  1047. it's an impossible standard

  1048. that's why we desperately

  1049. need Jesus

  1050. we all sin

  1051. Christians sin

  1052. ministers sin

  1053. I know colleagues

1054. who are now no longer

  1055. in public ministry

  1056. due to their sin

  1057. Romans 7 reminds us

  1058. we don't always do

1059. the good we want to do

1060. so until the new creation

  1061. we battle

  1062. but in the strength

  1063. of the Holy Spirit

  1064. and by God's grace

  1065. we can be conquerors

  1066. don't lose your saltiness

  1067. don't hide your light

1068. the answer to living in this world

  1069. is not imitation

  1070. be like everybody else

  1071. fit in

1072. do what everyone else is doing

  1073. that's not the answer

1074. and the answer is not isolation

  1075. don't be like anybody

  1076. don't have any association

  1077. with the world

  1078. in fact remove yourself

  1079. become a recluse

1080. and maybe live in the hills

  1081. the answer is not

  1082. imitation

  1083. the answer is not

  1084. isolation

  1085. the answer is

  1086. insulation

  1087. and D.L. Moody

  1088. expresses it this way

  1089. Christians should live

  1090. in the world

  1091. but not be filled

  1092. with it

1093. a ship in the water

  1094. insulated from its surrounds

  1095. like a ship

  1096. lives in the water

  1097. insulated from its surrounds

1098. but if water gets into the ship

1099. she goes to the bottom

1100. so Christians may live in the world

1101. but if the world gets into them

  1102. they sink

  1103. Jesus concludes

  1104. in the same way

1105. let your light shine before others

1106. so that they may see your good works

1107. and give glory to your Father

  1108. who is in heaven

  1109. believe it or not

  1110. the composer

  1111. Johann Sebastian Bach

  1112. was obscure

  1113. for a century

  1114. after his death

  1115. until he was rediscovered

  1116. by Felix Mendelssohn

  1117. as a result

  1118. many of his compositions

  1119. were lost

1120. no one knows how many

  1121. but of those

  1122. that do survive

  1123. on each manuscript

  1124. the interesting insertion

  1125. in Bach's own hand

  1126. of the letters

  1127. J.J.

1128. at the beginning of each

  1129. and S.D.G.

  1130. at the end

  1131. they are abbreviations

  1132. for the Latin

  1133. Jesu

  1134. Juva

  1135. Jesus

  1136. help me

  1137. and

  1138. Soli

  1139. Deo

  1140. Gloria

  1141. glory

  1142. to God

  1143. alone

  1144. Bach recognised

  1145. that his ability

  1146. to compose

  1147. was not natural

  1148. or normal

  1149. and was in fact

  1150. a gift from God

  1151. as a result

  1152. his desire

  1153. was not to make

  1154. a name for himself

  1155. but rather use

  1156. his gifts

  1157. to honour God

  1158. and give God

  1159. the glory

  1160. there needs to be

  1161. something different

  1162. about us

  1163. we are under the

  1164. microscope

  1165. we need to be

  1166. like Jesus

  1167. Jesus wants us

  1168. to be open

  1169. about the fact

  1170. that we follow him

  1171. otherwise

1172. we are of no use

  1173. to him

  1174. at all

  1175. not only no use

  1176. to him

  1177. but no use

  1178. to others

  1179. we need to be

  1180. salt and light

  1181. in the world

  1182. as followers

  1183. of Jesus

  1184. he wants us

  1185. to have an effect

  1186. on those

  1187. around us

  1188. like salt

  1189. and light

  1190. does

  1191. on everything

  1192. they come

  1193. in contact

  1194. with

  1195. we are to

  1196. have one

  1197. motive

  1198. like Bach

  1199. Soli

  1200. Deo

  1201. Gloria

  1202. glory

  1203. to God

  1204. alone

  1205. in Jesus

  1206. upside down

  1207. kingdom

  1208. being salt

  1209. and light

  1210. will point

  1211. others to

  1212. Jesus

  1213. and our

  1214. motivation

  1215. is clear

  1216. let your

  1217. light shine

  1218. before others

  1219. so that they

  1220. may see

  1221. your good

  1222. works

  1223. and give

  1224. glory to

  1225. your father

  1226. who is in

  1227. heaven

  1228. let's pray

  1229. heavenly

  1230. father

  1231. we thank

  1232. you for

  1233. Jesus

  1234. witness

  1235. and example

  1236. how he's

  1237. shown us

  1238. how to

  1239. live

  1240. and to

  1241. love

  1242. help us

  1243. to follow

  1244. in his

  1245. steps

  1246. to be

  1247. salt

  1248. and light

  1249. in this

  1250. world

  1251. for your

  1252. glory

  1253. and your

  1254. glory

  1255. alone

  1256. in Jesus

  1257. name we

  1258. pray

  1259. amen
