  1. Excellent. Good morning.

  2. Morning to people at home and the cameras.

  3. Well, this morning, what is it you treasure?

  4. I'm going to, I've brought in a few little treasures as a show and tell.

  5. And so here's one thing I treasure.

  6. My family, that's my wife Deb, and that's my daughter Adelaide and my son Hamish.

  7. They're both actually taller than her now.

  8. That was taken just before COVID and it's hard to find a photo.

  9. Anyway, she's in year 12 this year and he's going into year 9.

  10. So I treasure them.

  11. And I also treasure this, which I'm going to get now as part of the show and tell.

  12. I treasure this painting.

  13. This painting was given to me for Father's Day by my daughter when she was three

  14. and she painted it herself.

  15. Now, come on, gifted? What?

  16. No, no. Everyone's kids are gifted. I'm joking.

  17. She's not doing art, but she is doing D&T and drama.

  18. So it's something I treasure.

  19. Something else.

  20. I treasure these.

  21. I got a silver medal at the World Championship in St Andrews playing frisbee.

  22. And I've got a bronze medal playing frisbee.

  23. And this was the first Australian team ever to get medal overseas.

  24. So I kind of treasure them, but when you look at them, they're actually a bit cheap.

  25. And they'll rust.

  26. You know, they're not going to last.

  27. And something else here I treasure is the jersey.

  28. When you get to play for your country, like you have this little dream.

  29. And yes, it is a real sport.

  30. And, you know, you do have to be a little bit fit and know what you're doing.

  31. So it's a little fringy.

  32. But anyway, moths will eat that.

  33. It just won't last.

  34. And the thing that I really treasure is my relationship with Jesus.

  35. And that lasts forever.

  36. And I hold on to that.

  37. Today's passage in the Sermon on the Mount, as Jesus commenced his public ministry,

  38. he listed off the beautiful attitudes meant for his followers.

  39. He taught how we are to live as subjects in the long-awaited kingdom of God.

  40. And this is the best life for us.

  41. If we're to be followers of Jesus, we must listen to Jesus' words and obey them.

  42. The standard is high.

  43. And when we live this way, we are salt and we are light in the world.

  44. Even though it will make us stand out and often put us at a disadvantage to others in the world

  45. and by the standards of this world.

  46. The Sermon on the Mount challenges us to make significant changes,

  47. to live for God's upside-down kingdom.

  48. It's opposite to the way the world operates.

  49. And today I want to talk about an area that actually needs serious attention,

  50. but it's a sensitive topic.

  51. It has to be one of the least popular ones for us to talk about as Christians,

  52. especially from the pulpit, because people feel like being bent behind their back.

  53. And whether you have a little or a lot, as we head into this new year,

  54. we need to hear what God has to say about treasure.

  55. It's a touchy subject.

  56. But most of our life kind of revolves around the acquisition of stuff.

  57. Get a qualification.

  58. Get a career.

  59. Work.

  60. Mortgage.

  61. Clothing.

  62. Bills.

  63. Save.

  64. Super funds.

  65. Amass material blessings and wealth.

  66. Save for a restful, prosperous retirement,

  67. where the person with the most toys wins.

  68. This can be a real trap.

  69. In 1 Timothy 6.10, we're reminded,

  70. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

  71. Some people eager for money have wandered from the faith

  72. and pierced themselves with many griefs.

  73. Money isn't evil.

  74. It's the effect it has on us.

  75. It's what people do with it.

  76. People lie for money.

  77. People kill for money.

  78. Families face bitter splits at the reading of a will.

  79. I've seen it happen.

  80. People betray friends for money.

  81. No one ever thinks they've got too much money.

  82. Hardly anyone thinks they have enough money.

  83. Acquiring money for security and comfort drives our life.

  84. The opportunity to earn more money can motivate people

  85. to reorder their priorities in life.

  86. A big loss of money is a huge tragedy for most people,

  87. second only to death itself.

  88. We need to ask ourselves,

  89. what is it we treasure?

  90. Jesus concluded,

  91. you cannot serve both God and money.

  92. Who or what has mastery over our hearts?

  93. We serve whichever master has control over our heart.

  94. What would the world offer you that could entice you away from Jesus?

  95. And the answer Jesus gave is money.

  96. Listen to what Jesus has to say to those who are to follow him.

  97. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,

  98. where moth and rust destroy,

  99. and where thieves break in and steal.

  100. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

  101. where neither moth nor rust destroys,

  102. and where thieves do not break in and steal.

  103. For where your treasure is,

  104. there your heart will be also.

  105. Two treasures.

  106. Treasures on earth,

  107. treasures in heaven.

  108. Don't store up the first for yourself.

  109. Store up the second.

  110. Sounds simple,

  111. but in practice,

  112. treasure on earth.

  113. We need to note what Jesus is not talking about first.

  114. Money doesn't grow on trees or fall from the sky.

  115. Please God.

  116. Oh, there we go.

  117. Sweet.

  118. No, Jesus is not talking about

  119. making sensible provision for the future.

  120. He's not talking about

  121. working hard to avoid poverty.

  122. He's not talking about

  123. enjoying with gratitude

  124. the good things that God has made.

  125. And he's not talking about

  126. providing for our dependence.

  127. I think we know what Jesus is talking about.

  128. The human desire.

  129. Give me more.

  130. The love of wealth.

  131. What has got our hearts?

  132. What do we treasure?

  133. If we treasure

  134. honour and fame,

  135. then our heart will be ambitious.

  136. Sorry, I said treasure.

  137. I was thinking of true love then,

  138. but if we treasure...

  139. That's what I started.

  140. Anyway,

  141. if we treasure pleasure,

  142. then our heart will be self-indulgent.

  143. If we treasure money,

  144. then our heart will be greedy.

  145. Whatever has our heart,

  146. we actually worship.

  147. And how do we know we worship it?

  148. We make time for it.

  149. We make sacrifices for it.

  150. Whatever's on our heart

  151. will master us.

  152. We live with the cultural delusion

  153. that wealth equals security.

  154. With wealth,

  155. we can be our own gods,

  156. independent and not rely on God.

  157. Because we're self-made,

  158. we're self-sufficient.

  159. Wealth gives us control and power

  160. over our own fate

  161. and over other people.

  162. Personal wealth

  163. and worth

  164. can build our self-esteem

  165. and value.

  166. And they can be tied together

  167. with material possessions.

  168. We can feel good about ourselves

  169. if we dress and drive

  170. and dine

  171. and decorate well.

  172. With wealth,

  173. we can indulge our every desire,

  174. whether it's the exotic vacation,

  175. the luxurious wedding,

  176. the finest dining

  177. or the most extravagant home.

  178. people abandon Jesus

  179. and choose money

  180. and earthly treasure

  181. and it's a strange choice.

  182. If we read in Timothy,

  183. we brought nothing into the world,

  184. we can take nothing out of it.

  185. The same fate awaits everyone.

  186. Treasures on earth

  187. just don't last

  188. and we don't take any of it with us.

  189. Imagine gaining the whole world

  190. yet forfeiting your soul.

  191. The person with the most toys

  192. doesn't win.

  193. In this section

  194. on the Sermon on the Mount,

  195. Jesus warns against

  196. the extremes

  197. of wealth

  198. and worry.

  199. As God cares

  200. for the flowers in the field

  201. and the birds in the air,

  202. how much more

  203. his own children?

  204. Therefore,

  205. I tell you,

  206. do not worry about your life,

  207. saying,

  208. what shall we eat

  209. or what shall we drink?

  210. What shall we wear?

  211. For the pagans

  212. run after these things

  213. and your heavenly Father

  214. knows that you need them.

  215. But,

  216. seek first

  217. God's kingdom

  218. and his righteousness

  219. and all these things

  220. will be given to you.

  221. They'll be given to you as well.

  222. Therefore,

  223. do not worry about tomorrow

  224. for tomorrow

  225. will worry about itself.

  226. Do a quick tangent here.

  227. I just thought of it.

  228. My grandmother,

  229. when she was dying

  230. of bone marrow cancer,

  231. she was a Christian

  232. and she had a little EP.

  233. This is back in vinyl days

  234. and it was a country

  235. and western song,

  236. One Day at a Time,

  237. Sweet Jesus.

  238. That's all I'm asking you for.

  239. And she'd play that every day

  240. until she went home

  241. to be with Jesus.

  242. Don't worry about tomorrow.

  243. Each day has enough

  244. worries of its own.

  245. Live one day at a time,

  246. sweet Jesus.

  247. Well,

  248. later in the parable

  249. of the sower,

  250. Jesus spoke of the thorns

  251. and the worries of wealth

  252. in Matthew 13.

  253. Talks about the seed

  254. falling among the thorns,

  255. actually refers to the person

  256. who hears the word,

  257. but the worries of life

  258. and the deceitfulness of wealth

  259. choke the word,

  260. making it unfruitful.

  261. We need to weed out

  262. the thorns in our life.

  263. Don't worry

  264. and amass wealth

  265. like the pagans.

  266. Real security

  267. comes in a relationship

  268. with God.

  269. Seek first

  270. God's kingdom

  271. and all these things

  272. will be given unto you.

  273. So do not store up

  274. for yourselves

  275. treasures on earth.

  276. Jesus shifts now here

  277. from the heart

  278. to our eyes.

  279. The eye

  280. is the lamp

  281. of the body.

  282. So if your eye

  283. is healthy,

  284. your whole body

  285. will be full of light.

  286. But if your eye

  287. is bad,

  288. your whole body

  289. will be full of darkness.

  290. If then the light

  291. in you is darkness,

  292. how great

  293. is that darkness?

  294. We actually can't

  295. separate the heart

  296. and our eyes.

  297. We set our eyes

  298. on our heart's desire.

  299. The two are entwined.

  300. What is on our heart

  301. drives what we look at.

  302. What we treasure,

  303. we watch.

  304. It's what we read.

  305. It's the magazines

  306. we buy.

  307. It's the movies we watch.

  308. It's the internet searches.

  309. Whatever masters our heart

  310. masters our eyes.

  311. And what our eyes see

  312. in turn

  313. feeds our heart.

  314. It's this cycle.

  315. Are your eyes good

  316. and full of light?

  317. Or are your eyes bad

  318. and full of darkness?

  319. Jesus is saying,

  320. if our eyes are set

  321. on earthly treasures,

  322. on treasures on earth,

  323. then our eyes

  324. are in pretty bad shape.

  325. And by inference,

  326. so are our hearts.

  327. If we can't see

  328. that it's meaningless

  329. chasing treasures on earth,

  330. that it's just like

  331. a chasing after the mist,

  332. and if we can't see

  333. that it's actually wise

  334. to store up riches

  335. in heaven,

  336. then we need more

  337. than spectacles.

  338. We need to readjust

  339. our lens

  340. to that which emanates light.

  341. Open our eyes

  342. afresh

  343. to God's word,

  344. which is a lamp

  345. to our feet

  346. and a light

  347. to our path.

  348. Just on this,

  349. again,

  350. a little quick tangent

  351. that's not in the notes.

  352. Have you ever done

  353. a kaplunk?

  354. Kaplunk is,

  355. God,

  356. I don't know

  357. what's going on,

  358. just, you know,

  359. you've opened the Bible

  360. and you've pointed

  361. to a passage

  362. and hope it's spoken to you.

  363. People have done that?

  364. I'm really interested.

  365. I've seen a few notes.

  366. Righto.

  367. Well, get this.

  368. Married, no kids.

  369. My wife and I

  370. go to a conference

  371. and it's a conference

  372. on international schools.

  373. We're both educators

  374. and we heard

  375. you could go to Berlin

  376. and Jakarta

  377. and Tokyo

  378. and teach in all these

  379. international schools

  380. and you got paid

  381. pretty well

  382. and looked after

  383. and even got accommodated

  384. and some schools

  385. even offered you

  386. a security home

  387. and a chauffeur-driven

  388. car to inform us.

  389. Anyway,

  390. I was like,

  391. well, this sounds good,

  392. you know,

  393. and so,

  394. should we do this, God?

  395. You know,

  396. we'll come back to Australia

  397. and we'll have a deposit

  398. for a house

  399. and we'll be all set up.

  400. Kaplunk time.

  401. James, chapter 4.

    James 4 chapter mention

  402. Who are you?

  403. Just say you'll go

  404. to this city

  405. and that city

  406. and make money.

  407. You are but a miss.

  408. What you should be saying

  409. is what is God's will

  410. and do that.

  411. Anything else

  412. is evil.

  413. Okay, God,

  414. we're not going

  415. to international schools.

  416. Got it?

  417. Kaplunk.

  418. Very good.

  419. So,

  420. God's word is a lamp

  421. to our feet,

  422. a light to our path.

  423. Fill our eyes with light.

  424. If not treasures on earth,

  425. then what are we to live for?

  426. Jesus tells us

  427. what our motivation

  428. should be like.

  429. Jesus said,

  430. store up for yourselves

  431. treasures in heaven

  432. where moths don't eat,

  433. rust doesn't destroy

  434. and where thieves

  435. do not break in

  436. and steal.

  437. For where your treasure is,

  438. there your heart

  439. will be also.

  440. What does Jesus mean

  441. by treasure in heaven?

  442. According to Don Carson,

  443. the words treasure in heaven

  444. go back to early

  445. Jewish literature.

  446. Here it refers to

  447. whatever is good

  448. and of eternal significance

  449. that comes out

  450. of what is done

  451. on earth.

  452. Doing righteous deeds,

  453. suffering for Christ,

  454. forgiving one another,

  455. willingness to share

  456. what you have.

  457. You remember the early church

  458. people sold their houses

  459. and their land

  460. to give out.

  461. In other words,

  462. what has eternal significance

  463. is leaving out

  464. the complete package

  465. outlined in the

  466. Sermon on the Mount.

  467. Now, while we don't know

  468. what the reward in heaven

  469. is actually going to look like,

  470. we get a picture

  471. of what heaven

  472. actually will look like

  473. to some degree

  474. in Revelation

  475. and it's beautiful

  476. and majestic

  477. and amazing

  478. but we still actually

  479. can't fathom that

  480. because we're sitting

  481. in these chairs

  482. and we're in these

  483. mortal bodies.

  484. We can't fathom it.

  485. But let's face it,

  486. none of us are really

  487. concerned about receiving

  488. some kind of material

  489. reward in heaven,

  490. surely.

  491. the best treasure

  492. in heaven,

  493. this is what I hope for,

  494. will be to see

  495. the people we know

  496. and love,

  497. the people we've

  498. come in contact with.

  499. Our friends and family

  500. are going to be a given

  501. that we want to see

  502. them there

  503. but what about

  504. the people we meet

  505. on the streets?

  506. Sometimes I'll get

  507. on public transport

  508. and I'll sit on a bus

  509. and actually face

  510. the opposite way

  511. and I just look down

  512. the barrel at all the people

  513. and I'm thinking,

  514. do you know Jesus?

  515. Are you ready?

  516. I'd love to see you

  517. all there one day.

  518. I don't know you

  519. but I'd love to see you there.

  520. And it's the image bearers

  521. of God

  522. that Jesus died for.

  523. Not a car

  524. or an Australian

  525. frisbee jersey

  526. or a rusty medal.

  527. What has eternal significance?

  528. Doing God's will

  529. on earth

  530. as it is in heaven

  531. and sharing the gospel

  532. with our whole lives.

  533. I don't think it's

  534. too much of a stretch

  535. but I honestly believe

  536. that the treasure

  537. we store up in heaven

  538. is the people

  539. we personally point to Jesus.

  540. Normally if you give

  541. earthly treasure away

  542. it's gone.

  543. The gospel is better

  544. than a Tim Tam pack

  545. that never runs out.

  546. In his great mercy

  547. he has given us

  548. new birth

  549. into a living hope

  550. through the resurrection

  551. of Jesus Christ

  552. from the dead

  553. and into an inheritance

  554. that can never perish

  555. spoil or fade

  556. kept in heaven

  557. for you.

  558. The gospel

  559. is the treasure

  560. that keeps on giving.

  561. When we share the gospel

  562. we still have it

  563. but so does someone else.

  564. It's God's treasure

  565. that never perishes

  566. never spoils

  567. never fades.

  568. As we share the gospel

  569. and give generously

  570. to support ministry

  571. of the gospel

  572. both here

  573. and with overseas mission

  574. we are using riches

  575. on earth

  576. to build treasure

  577. in heaven.

  578. In this life

  579. we won't always see it

  580. but what joy

  581. there will be

  582. what treasure

  583. in heaven

  584. when we are united

  585. with those

  586. who have come

  587. to know Jesus

  588. either because

  589. of our direct connection

  590. in sharing our lives

  591. and the gospel

  592. with them

  593. or indirectly

  594. through our partnering

  595. financially

  596. and mission

  597. both locally

  598. and globally.

  599. Jesus concludes

  600. no one can serve

  601. two masters

  602. either they will

  603. hate the one

  604. and love the other

  605. or they will be devoted

  606. to one

  607. and despise the other.

  608. You cannot serve

  609. both God

  610. and money.

  611. Why can't we have it all?

  612. Why can't we have both?

  613. A couple of observations here.

  614. In this western age

  615. of individualism

  616. selfishness

  617. instant gratification

  618. people today

  619. find it hard

  620. to miss out

  621. on anything

  622. that money can buy

  623. if they have the means.

  624. Needing the right

  625. brand of clothes

  626. cars

  627. mobile phones

  628. gaming consoles

  629. spectacular holidays

  630. not many of us

  631. are willing

  632. to go without

  633. or prepared

  634. to make costly

  635. sacrifices

  636. in laying down

  637. our lives

  638. for Jesus.

  639. Worldliness

  640. can so easily

  641. entangle

  642. like the thorns

  643. the Christian life.

  644. Nothing but the best

  645. will do for me.

  646. I've earned it.

  647. I deserve it.

  648. We place limits

  649. on trusting Jesus.

  650. I'm not prepared

  651. to step out

  652. in faith

  653. and trust God

  654. and let him

  655. take me

  656. where he'll take me.

  657. I'm scared

  658. that my pay package

  659. will drop

  660. that my standard

  661. of living

  662. will lower.

  663. Not many people

  664. are prepared

  665. to downscale

  666. for the sake

  667. of the gospel

  668. buy a cheaper

  669. brand

  670. or generously

  671. support mission.

  672. When Jesus

  673. says no one

  674. can serve

  675. two masters

  676. it's an image

  677. of slavery.

  678. Slaves

  679. were owned

  680. by a master.

  681. They were required

  682. to obey

  683. and serve

  684. their master

  685. full time.

  686. There was no room

  687. in their lives

  688. to serve

  689. another master.

  690. Two treasures.

  691. Treasure on earth

  692. or treasure in heaven.

  693. We'll hate one

  694. and we'll love

  695. the other

  696. or we'll be devoted

  697. to one

  698. and despise

  699. the other

  700. but we can't

  701. serve both

  702. God and money.

  703. who

  704. or what

  705. has mastery

  706. of your heart?

  707. Have you been

  708. enslaved

  709. by earthly

  710. treasures

  711. because it's

  712. idolatry?

  713. Whatever you do

  714. and this is a popular

  715. thing

  716. just follow your heart

  717. listen to your heart

  718. don't listen

  719. to your heart.

  720. Jeremiah 17

  721. 9

  722. reminds us

  723. the heart

  724. is deceitful

  725. above all things

  726. but praise God

  727. in Ezekiel

  728. we're reminded

  729. that God wants

  730. to give us

  731. a new heart

  732. and put a new

  733. spirit

  734. to remove

  735. our heart

  736. of stone

  737. and give us

  738. a heart

  739. of flesh.

  740. We all need

  741. to hear these

  742. words

  743. and to take

  744. them seriously.

  745. The heart

  746. of our living

  747. is to be

  748. for the kingdom

  749. of God.

  750. What then

  751. are we to do

  752. with earthly

  753. treasure?

  754. The first thing

  755. we need to acknowledge

  756. that we are rich.

  757. Did you know

  758. that if you earn

  759. $90 a day

  760. you're in the top

  761. 1%

  762. of the richest

  763. people in the world?

  764. You don't have

  765. to be Elon Musk

  766. Bill Gates

  767. or any of these people

  768. $90 a day

  769. will put you

  770. in the top 1%

  771. of people in the world.

  772. As we are blessed

  773. we need to be

  774. a blessing to others.

  775. Jesus said

  776. to whom much is given

  777. much will be required.

  778. And we need

  779. to acknowledge

  780. that this is actually

  781. all just a loan

  782. from God.

  783. In Psalm 24

    Psalms 24:1

  784. verse 1

  785. we read

  786. the earth

  787. is the Lord's

  788. and everything

  789. in it

  790. the world

  791. and all

  792. who live in it.

  793. In other words

  794. everything we have

  795. is just on loan

  796. from God.

  797. If it wasn't

  798. we'd take it with us

  799. when we die.

  800. So what do we do

  801. with earthly treasure

  802. God has given us

  803. on loan?

  804. We get a really

  805. clear indicator

  806. in Timothy.

  807. Command those

  808. who are rich

  809. in this present world

  810. not to be arrogant

  811. nor to put their hope

  812. in wealth

  813. which is so uncertain

  814. but to put their hope

  815. in God

  816. who richly provides us

  817. with everything

  818. for our enjoyment.

  819. Command them

  820. to do good

  821. to be rich

  822. in good deeds

  823. and to be generous

  824. and willing to share.

  825. In this way

  826. they will lay up

  827. treasure for themselves

  828. as a firm foundation

  829. for the coming age

  830. so that they may

  831. take hold

  832. of the life

  833. that is truly life.

  834. be rich

  835. in good deeds

  836. be generous

  837. and willing

  838. to share.

  839. For those

  840. in the family

  841. of God

  842. our inheritance

  843. is in heaven.

  844. This treasure

  845. is secure

  846. and it lasts

  847. forever.

  848. There's a story

  849. of a rich

  850. diamond merchant

  851. who was looking

  852. for a particular

  853. diamond for his

  854. collection

  855. and there was

  856. a New York

  857. jeweller

  858. who traded

  859. in diamonds

  860. who knew of this

  861. and he discovered

  862. in his collection

  863. a diamond

  864. that this Dutch

  865. diamond collector

  866. would like

  867. and he flew over

  868. and he said

  869. come on over

  870. and he got his

  871. associate

  872. his best salesman

  873. who knew everything

  874. about diamonds

  875. to talk about

  876. this diamond

  877. and at the end

  878. of him discussing

  879. all the technical

  880. details of the diamond

  881. the guy decided

  882. he wouldn't buy it.

  883. He wasn't interested

  884. after all

  885. and then the owner

  886. of the shop said

  887. hang on a minute

  888. can I just take that diamond

  889. and give it one more crack

  890. and then he explained

  891. all this about the diamond

  892. and the gentleman

  893. decided to buy it

  894. and then he said

  895. sir I wonder why

  896. you're able to sell me

  897. this stone

  898. when your salesman

  899. could not

  900. and the owner replied

  901. that salesman

  902. is the best

  903. in the business

  904. he knows more

  905. about diamonds

  906. than anyone

  907. including myself

  908. and I pay him

  909. large salary

  910. for his knowledge

  911. and expertise

  912. but I would gladly

  913. pay him twice

  914. as much

  915. if I could put

  916. into him

  917. something

  918. I have

  919. which he lacks

  920. you see

  921. he knows diamonds

  922. but I love them

  923. what we love

  924. what we treasure

  925. what we're passionate about

  926. passionate about

  927. we talk about

  928. if you like skiing

  929. I'll know you like skiing

  930. because you'll start

  931. talking about it

  932. or some kind of sport

  933. or music

  934. or your family

  935. Jesus said

  936. out of the overflow

  937. of the heart

  938. the mouth speaks

  939. what's on our heart

  940. we speak about

  941. it just comes out

  942. it's one thing

  943. to know about Jesus

  944. it's another

  945. to love Jesus

  946. and if you love Jesus

  947. and treasure knowing him

  948. you can't stop

  949. talking about him

  950. we're jars of clay

  951. and like jars of clay

  952. we're fallible

  953. we're broken

  954. we're fragile

  955. yet we have this

  956. glorious treasure within

  957. that will not perish

  958. and will not fade

  959. when we truly love Jesus

  960. and truly love our family

  961. and friends

  962. and really care about

  963. other people

  964. we don't want them

  965. to miss out on heaven

  966. the diamond salesman

  967. loved earthly treasure

  968. and loved talking about

  969. that treasure

  970. but that doesn't last

  971. if we love Jesus

  972. we have a different

  973. perspective on life

  974. looking forward to a place

  975. where moth and rust

  976. do not destroy

  977. and where thieves

  978. cannot break in and steal

  979. and as a result

  980. we focus

  981. I hope on things

  982. that have eternal significance

  983. if we love Jesus

  984. we love sharing the gospel

  985. godly treasure

  986. and use our worldly treasure

  987. God has given us

  988. on loan

  989. to support ministry

  990. of the good news of Jesus

  991. both here

  992. locally

  993. nationally

  994. and globally

  995. Oscar Schindler

  996. and his wife

  997. saved over 1200 Jews

  998. from near certain death

  999. at the hands of the Nazis

1000. in the Steven Spielberg film

  1001. Schindler's List

  1002. it records how Oscar

  1003. used his worldly wealth

  1004. to rescue Jews

  1005. at the conclusion

  1006. of World War II

  1007. Schindler was given

  1008. a gold ring

  1009. this is true

  1010. it's not just a movie depiction

  1011. and on the ring

  1012. the gold ring

  1013. from the survivors

  1014. and the gold

  1015. was actually extracted

  1016. from the tooth

  1017. the bridge in a prisoner's mouth

1018. and they got the ring

  1019. and they inscribed it

  1020. with something

  1021. from the Talmud

1022. and this is what it read

1023. he who saves a single life

  1024. saves the entire world

  1025. the film marks

  1026. this moment powerfully

  1027. on receiving the gift

  1028. Schindler breaks down

1029. and he removes his watch

1030. and he removes a gold pin

  1031. and he says

1032. this could have been one more

1033. this could have been five more

1034. he could have used his earthly treasure

  1035. to save more

  1036. one day

  1037. we will see Jesus

1038. could be sooner than we realise

  1039. and we'll look around

  1040. all the people

1041. that we shared the gospel with

  1042. or we supported

  1043. in ministry

1044. and ministry of the gospel

1045. will we wish we'd done more

1046. those who point others to Jesus

1047. the one who saves life

1048. store up treasure in heaven

  1049. when the Christian community

1050. is salt and light in the world

  1051. generosity is a sign

  1052. that this world

  1053. has not taken hold

1054. and that we've weeded out

  1055. the thorns of wealth

  1056. accumulation and worry

1057. from the garden of our lives

1058. there will be an observable difference

1059. as we live by using

  1060. treasure on earth

  1061. God has given us

1062. not to invest in property shares

  1063. or our portfolios

  1064. but rather investing

1065. in sharing in the gospel

  1066. I pray this happens

1067. as we listen to the teaching

  1068. of Jesus

  1069. and respond

  1070. by living for God's

  1071. upside down kingdom

1072. seeking to build treasure on earth

  1073. treasure in heaven

  1074. not on earth

1075. so as we head into 2022

  1076. it's a great opportunity

  1077. to reassess our motivations

  1078. where our hearts lie

1079. and what it is we really treasure

1080. it's a chance to examine our finances

  1081. rework the budget

  1082. prioritise giving

1083. we cannot serve two masters

1084. we either live for treasure on earth

1085. or live for treasure in heaven

  1086. which treasure

1087. will we live for today

  1088. it's a choice

1089. we have to make constantly

  1090. stir up for yourselves

  1091. treasure in heaven

  1092. where moths don't eat

  1093. rust doesn't destroy

  1094. and where thieves

1095. do not break into steel

1096. for where your treasure is

1097. there your heart will be

  1098. also

  1099. let's pray

  1100. heavenly father

  1101. lord

  1102. weed out our hearts

  1103. lord

  1104. take from us anything

  1105. that's

1106. taking us away from you

  1107. whatever we've

  1108. it's encapsulated us

  1109. in this world

  1110. you've made a good world

  1111. it's an amazing world

  1112. lord

  1113. that

  1114. it's broken

  1115. and it's fallen

  1116. and we need Jesus

  1117. lord

  1118. let this world

  1119. not distract us

1120. let us live in this world

1121. but not of the world

1122. let us fix our eyes on Jesus

  1123. the author and perfecter

  1124. of our faith

  1125. and lord

1126. motivated by love for you

  1127. and love for others

1128. can we just share this

  1129. treasure

  1130. this gospel treasure

  1131. with all we come

  1132. in contact with

  1133. with all we see

  1134. and may they know

  1135. the love of Jesus

1136. and the hope we have

  1137. the new creation

  1138. lord

  1139. we hope for that

  1140. in Jesus name

  1141. amen
