  1. Thank you and good morning, church.

  2. It's good to see you and thank you for this opportunity

  3. to open God's word and let God speak to us.

  4. So let's just pray now.

  5. Heavenly Father, Lord, your word is a lamp to our feet

  6. and a light to our path.

  7. Lord, speak into our hearts now, Lord, and transform them.

  8. Change our hearts of stone to hearts of flesh

  9. that see the world the way you see it

  10. and reach out then in love.

  11. I pray this in your son's name. Amen.

  12. Well, this is going to be a bit of a heavy one.

  13. If you just saw the reading then, it's pretty full on.

  14. And so I'm trying to...

  15. I can't lighten it up, but I'm just letting you know

  16. that it's going to be pretty full on.

  17. I heard a story once about a preacher in a small town

  18. who preached up a storm.

  19. He started with this amazing illustration.

  20. He led into opening God's word.

  21. And then really by the end of it,

  22. everyone was convicted of their sin,

  23. their need to repent,

  24. and their need to live for Jesus each day.

  25. And so word got around town.

  26. It was a small town.

  27. And so everyone turned up the following week.

  28. The church was packed.

  29. Everyone from the town turned up.

  30. And he started off with the same illustration.

  31. And I went, oh, I heard it last week,

  32. but that's a good illustration.

  33. I like hearing it again.

  34. And then launched into the same sermon, word for word.

  35. And they all came out.

  36. And because other people hadn't heard it that week before,

  37. they went, good sermon.

  38. Thanks very much.

  39. And they went on their way.

  40. And the following week,

  41. they all turned up again.

  42. And he preached exactly the same sermon, word for word.

  43. And the following week,

  44. they all turned up.

  45. And he preached the same sermon, word for word.

  46. They're starting to get a bit worried.

  47. Is this, you know, what's it called?

  48. An age moment?

  49. I don't know.

  50. Like, is he getting premature dementia?

  51. I don't know.

  52. Like, what was it?

  53. And who's going to speak to him?

  54. You know, has he just sort of turned up

  55. and got the same folder?

  56. And anyway, someone was brave enough.

  57. And they went up to him.

  58. And they said,

  59. you seem to be preaching the same sermon every week.

  60. We kind of like your style.

  61. But, you know, we like your variety as well.

  62. Can't you just, what's the reason?

  63. You've got a reason.

  64. He said, it's one thing to know it.

  65. It's another thing to put it into practice.

  66. Then he goes on to say,

  67. I'll start preaching something new

  68. when we all start doing it.

  69. And not really a joke,

  70. but just a case of put it into action.

  71. This new year,

  72. we have been working through the Sermon on a Mount.

  73. One of the most famous pieces of teaching

  74. in the history of the human race.

  75. It's been heard of by a lot of people.

  76. But at the same time,

  77. it's a misunderstood piece of teaching.

  78. Even though it's actually not difficult to understand.

  79. Rather, it seems that those who know of

  80. the Sermon on the Mount

  81. actually haven't read it for themselves.

  82. Oh yeah, I know of the Sermon on the Mount.

  83. Jesus was a good guy.

  84. You know, he had some moral teachings, didn't he?

  85. Something about loving people,

  86. I guess, in there somewhere.

  87. Some moral reflections or suggestions

  88. on how to live.

  89. Take it or leave it.

  90. The Sermon on the Mount

  91. is not like that at all.

  92. It actually calls us

  93. to make an extremely important choice.

  94. Choose life.

  95. Jesus came to give us life to the full.

  96. This is life

  97. and what it means to live life

  98. according to being part of God's kingdom

  99. and it's on God's terms.

  100. Having been chosen by God,

  101. we now have a daily choice

  102. to live as followers of Jesus.

  103. Jesus lays it out in the Sermon on the Mount.

  104. What it means to live a life in him

  105. and God has very high standards.

  106. Jesus is not talking about

  107. a better moral code

  108. or burdensome new laws

  109. that we have to achieve

  110. to get a tick in God's good books.

  111. Jesus is showing

  112. what life can be like

  113. if we follow him

  114. and if we trust him.

  115. Like the minister

  116. who kept preaching the same sermon

  117. until everyone decided to do it,

  118. we can't walk away

  119. from Jesus' words unaffected.

  120. We need to hear them again

  121. and again

  122. and be reminded

  123. there is a call to action.

  124. Make a choice.

  125. Live for God's upside down kingdom

  126. each and every day.

  127. As we come to Matthew 7,

  128. we will see the important choices

  129. we must make in relationships

  130. and how we can call on God

  131. to help.

  132. Jesus shifts from

  133. warning his followers

  134. about their own personal temptations

  135. concerning wealth and worry

  136. to temptations that can surface

  137. in their relationships

  138. with each other.

  139. Jesus has something to say

  140. about our relationships

  141. because following Jesus

  142. should make a difference

  143. to how we relate

  144. to one another,

  145. to our brothers

  146. and to our sisters.

  147. Matthew 7, verse 1.

    Matthew 7:1

  148. Do not judge

  149. or you too will be judged.

  150. For in the same way

  151. you judge others,

  152. you will be judged

  153. and with the measure you use,

  154. it will be measured

  155. to you.

  156. Our culture,

  157. more than ever,

  158. seems super judgmental,

  159. hypercritical,

  160. touchy,

  161. easily offended.

  162. Social media algorithms,

  163. I think,

  164. play into this a little bit.

  165. People want to post images,

  166. get likes,

  167. get followers.

  168. There's a guy,

  169. Mr Beast,

  170. who's got millions of followers

  171. and do perfect.

  172. There's all these people

  173. and they make a living

  174. out of getting followers.

  175. Instagram posts,

  176. getting likes,

  177. whether it's on home renos

  178. or decorations

  179. or I actually personally

  180. follow a thing

  181. called van life.

  182. Van life's these people

  183. who do up the interior vans

  184. and they,

  185. anyway,

  186. they're nice.

  187. So there's sort of,

  188. sometimes it's a little bit positive

  189. but it can also be a negative.

  190. If you don't fly

  191. a particular flag

  192. or have a political allegiance

  193. and it lies outside

  194. popular culture,

  195. expect to be vilified,

  196. a media pylon,

  197. face the wrath

  198. of the cancel culture

  199. who are judge,

  200. jury and executioner.

  201. But we judge all the time,

  202. superficial judgments,

  203. self-righteous judgments,

  204. hypocritical judgments,

  205. unfair and ill-informed judgments,

  206. harsh, unforgiving judgments.

  207. When we meet people,

  208. before we've even opened our mouths,

  209. before we go into a conversation with them,

  210. we do a top to toe.

  211. I like their eyes,

  212. nice smile,

  213. look at the shirt they're wearing,

  214. oh they've had a haircut,

  215. nice haircut,

  216. all the way down to,

  217. oh I wouldn't wear those shoes,

  218. or all the accessories

  219. that they're wearing

  220. that they have.

  221. This is before we even say,

  222. oh hi,

  223. my name is,

  224. what do you do?

  225. What are your hobbies?

  226. Where do you live?

  227. What are your thoughts on this issue?

  228. That's how we relate to one another,

  229. by judging each other,

  230. compartmentalizing,

  231. putting each other in a box,

  232. assessing whether they live up

  233. to a certain standard

  234. or the right postcode,

  235. if we have anything in common,

  236. where they fit in the social standing

  237. or pecking order of things.

  238. And so we point the finger,

  239. I've done this in schools,

  240. and say,

  241. every time you point the finger,

  242. there's three pointing

  243. right back at you,

  244. to which you remember

  245. a student saying,

  246. I'm just going to point

  247. like this now.

  248. So obviously,

  249. there's no wrong in them.

  250. Do not judge.

  251. No, no, I'll do it this way.

  252. Do not judge.

  253. In these words,

  254. Jesus is saying,

  255. don't set ourselves up

  256. as judge.

  257. That's God's job.

  258. Don't be self-righteous.

  259. Set ourselves up to judge

  260. and to criticize.

  261. If you find yourself doing this,

  262. Jesus is saying,

  263. there's no place for that

  264. amongst Christian people.

  265. Christians aren't to judge.

  266. God is judge,

  267. and he will judge one day,

  268. and we'll answer to God.

  269. We'll answer to God's standards,

  270. not our own.

  271. When it comes to Jesus,

  272. Jesus uses the very graphic image

  273. of a speck in someone's eye

  274. and a plank in our own.

  275. This is real,

  276. but we don't like to think of it as us.

  277. It's not me.

  278. Preferably it's that person over there.

  279. Surely not me.

  280. But here's an opportunity right now

  281. even to think,

  282. where am I at with this?

  283. Am I judging

  284. and being judgmental?

  285. Do you find yourself being a bit judgy?

  286. What at stake here

  287. is our attitude.

  288. What does critical,

  289. judgmental character look like?

  290. It's self-righteous

  291. and it's hypocritical.

  292. We may tell ourselves,

  293. I can afford to look down my nose

  294. at my less disciplined peers

  295. or my colleagues

  296. because of their recurring sin,

  297. some small deficiency

  298. or inconsistency in their lives.

  299. We may conclude

  300. that their spiritual stature,

  301. personal integrity

  302. and useful service of others

  303. are all vastly inferior to our own.

  304. But it's condescending

  305. and actually fails to recognize

  306. our own sinfulness.

  307. I can't help but think

  308. of Jesus' response here

  309. when there's a crowd of people

  310. with stones in their hand

  311. ready to stone the adulterous.

  312. And notice if they're being consistent,

  313. the man should have been there as well.

  314. And Jesus stands up

  315. and he says,

  316. those who have not sinned

  317. cast the first stone.

  318. And he goes back to doodling in the sand,

  319. whatever he's drawing or writing.

  320. And they all one by one

  321. drop their stones and walk away.

  322. And then he gets up

  323. and actually it's,

  324. those who have not sinned cast,

  325. Jesus can cast the first stone now

  326. because he has not sinned.

  327. And he goes on to say,

  328. neither do I condemn you,

  329. but go and leave your life of sin.

  330. So don't keep doing it.

  331. Leave your life of sin.

  332. So if we're going to cast stones,

  333. listen to Jesus' words,

  334. that those who are without sin

  335. cast a stone.

  336. Do you find that the very thing

  337. that you struggle with

  338. is the thing that you actually notice

  339. in someone?

  340. So I think it's because

  341. we're attuned to that sin

  342. or we're so practiced at it.

  343. Like if you're someone

  344. who's used to concealing something,

  345. you'll notice someone else

  346. who's, oh,

  347. they're looking the other way

  348. when they're talking.

  349. They must be lying or something.

  350. And you notice

  351. you can be attuned to this.

  352. At which point we have a choice.

  353. You can pounce and highlight it

  354. and go, ah,

  355. you're actually not telling

  356. the truth right now.

  357. Or you can first take the plank

  358. out of your own eye

  359. before you go to take

  360. the speck out of theirs.

  361. It's hypocritical and double standards

  362. to expect something from others

  363. that we can't accomplish ourselves.

  364. I can assure you,

  365. anyone who gets up in the pulpit

  366. and shares a message

  367. from the scriptures,

  368. they're convicted.

  369. I'm not standing up here

  370. and saying,

  371. I don't struggle with anything

  372. that I'm sharing with you,

  373. the way you struggle.

  374. We're all convicted.

  375. There's nothing self-righteous.

  376. You pour over the scriptures

  377. and you go,

  378. wow, I'm preaching on this.

  379. I'm going to say,

  380. this is what God says.

  381. But at the end of the day,

  382. I really struggle with this myself.

  383. So I want to be clear about that.

  384. But in the same way we judge,

  385. we'll be judged,

  386. and do we really want God

  387. to use that measure against us?

  388. Because I think humans

  389. can be really merciless

  390. and yet God shows grace and mercy.

  391. We don't want him to judge us

  392. the way we judge each other,

  393. I think, personally.

  394. Jesus is saying,

  395. we shouldn't give up

  396. any capacity to discern

  397. right from wrong

  398. and I'm going to get to that

  399. in a moment.

  400. It's not that we should

  401. never help one another

  402. or completely refrain

  403. from pointing out

  404. some wrongdoing.

  405. But first,

  406. be prepared to take

  407. that plank out of your eye

  408. and once that's dealt with,

  409. then remove the specks.

  410. This is about how we relate

  411. to one another.

  412. As Christians,

  413. there needs to be a difference.

  414. And if we go back

  415. to Matthew 5, verse 7,

    Matthew 5:7

  416. remember the blessed.

  417. Blessed are the merciful,

  418. for they will be shown mercy.

  419. What Jesus is saying here,

  420. as we come into a relationship

  421. with God,

  422. kingdom living involves humility.

  423. It involves self-reflection

  424. and it involves repentance.

  425. In God's upside-down kingdom,

  426. our lives have to change.

  427. We won't feel the need

  428. to assert our rightness

  429. all the time

  430. because when we're

  431. in God's kingdom,

  432. we're secure enough

  433. to recognise

  434. that we've got faults

  435. and everyone,

  436. every one of us

  437. are fully reliant

  438. on God's grace.

  439. We can acknowledge

  440. our own faults

  441. and at the same time,

  442. if need be,

  443. are able to encourage others

  444. to turn back to Christ.

  445. And I think here

  446. in Galatians,

  447. Galatians chapter 6,

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  448. we read,

  449. Brothers and sisters,

  450. if someone is caught in sin,

  451. you who live by the Spirit

  452. should restore that person gently,

  453. but watch yourselves

  454. or you also may be tempted.

  455. Carry each other's burdens

  456. and in this way

  457. you will fulfil the law of Christ.

  458. Restore gently,

  459. but first,

  460. take the plank

  461. out of our own eyes

  462. and then work

  463. on the speck in theirs.

  464. But be careful also

  465. that whatever

  466. they're struggling with,

  467. you then don't get tempted

  468. and drawn into yourself.

  469. Jesus has been talking

  470. about how Christians

  471. need to relate

  472. to one another.

  473. Don't copy the hypocrisy

  474. of the Pharisees.

  475. And he's now addressing

  476. how we relate

  477. to non-Christians.

  478. He goes from saying,

  479. do not judge,

  480. this is really tricky now,

  481. I think,

  482. and we're going,

  483. what?

  484. To requiring us

  485. to actually make

  486. a judgment call.

  487. Jesus goes on

  488. to talk about

  489. dogs and pigs.

  490. And they're his labels,

  491. they're not mine,

  492. they're his,

  493. and so it's Jesus' words

  494. and they're full on.

  495. He's not talking about

  496. non-Christians in general.

  497. He's talking about

  498. those who just,

  499. like Pharaoh's heart

  500. that hardened,

  501. don't want anything

  502. to do with this at all.

  503. The sacred pearl here

  504. that Jesus is talking

  505. about here

  506. is the gospel.

  507. And if I could put it

  508. this way,

  509. in one hand,

  510. we've got God's love

  511. and God's compassion

  512. and in the other hand,

  513. we've got God's judgment.

  514. That is the gospel.

  515. God's judgment

  516. is poured out

  517. on his son

  518. because he shows

  519. compassion

  520. and love to us.

  521. You want to know

  522. about God's love?

  523. You've got to have

  524. the full gospel.

  525. What I'm hearing today

  526. from society

  527. is this.

  528. I want to know

  529. about God's love

  530. and compassion

  531. but I don't want

  532. to hear about judgment.

  533. I don't want to hear

  534. that judgment's coming.

  535. I don't want to hear

  536. that I'm going to be judged.

  537. But you don't get

  538. the full gospel

  539. if you don't bring

  540. in judgment.

  541. And when I say,

  542. how do you know

  543. God loves me?

  544. Because

  545. he took the judgment

  546. for me

  547. on the cross.

  548. But people

  549. don't want to hear

  550. that today.

  551. They don't want

  552. to hear it.

  553. So don't cast

  554. your pearls

  555. before dogs

  556. and pigs.

  557. In other words,

  558. don't bother

  559. sharing the gospel

  560. with people

  561. who have decisively

  562. rejected it.

  563. We need to

  564. recognize them

  565. for who they are

  566. and this is

  567. a judgment call.

  568. When Jesus says

  569. don't judge,

  570. he's not saying

  571. remove all our

  572. critical faculties

  573. or under no circumstances

  574. can we hold

  575. no opinions

  576. about right and wrong.

  577. Jesus turned tables

  578. you remember.

  579. He turned tables

  580. at injustice.

  581. Diedrich Bonhoeffer

  582. stood up

  583. against Hitler.

  584. It actually

  585. saw him imprisoned

  586. and later executed

  587. because he stood up

  588. and spoke against evil.

  589. Evil prospers

  590. when good people

  591. do and say nothing.

  592. Christians must have

  593. a voice in society.

  594. What Jesus is saying

  595. is that we must

  596. recognize those

  597. in the world

  598. who have so rejected

  599. Christ

  600. that there comes

  601. a point

  602. when we're not

  603. to waste our time

  604. any longer

  605. casting the pearls

  606. of the gospel

  607. before them.

  608. We have to discern

  609. when we're speaking

  610. pearls to those

  611. who have ears to hear

  612. and when the pearl

  613. of the gospel

  614. is being trampled

  615. underfoot.

  616. But how can we know?

  617. I think it's hard

  618. to know.

  619. You don't know

  620. people's hearts

  621. or you can't

  622. read their thoughts.

  623. But there probably

  624. are occasions

  625. when we're

  626. proverbially

  627. shown the door.

  628. I don't want

  629. to hear this anymore.

  630. So there's no point

  631. carrying on with this

  632. and it always

  633. blows me away.

  634. It's an amazing

  635. message of forgiveness,

  636. hope,

  637. and love.

  638. And people don't

  639. want to hear it.

  640. The intent

  641. of the Sermon

  642. on the Mount

  643. is to listen

  644. to Jesus' words

  645. and to act

  646. upon them.

  647. Our relationship

  648. with our brothers

  649. and sisters

  650. in Christ

  651. should be different.

  652. Jesus has presented

  653. us with two

  654. difficult tasks.

  655. One,

  656. a standard

  657. in the way

  658. we relate

  659. to one another

  660. and if we're

  661. honest,

  662. we know

  663. how difficult

  664. this can be.

  665. Do not judge.

  666. And two,

  667. he's actually

  668. set out

  669. that we need

  670. to discern

  671. and recognise

  672. those who are

  673. the dogs

  674. and pigs

  675. which can be

  676. too tricky

  677. and it might

  678. be too quick

  679. to actually

  680. write people

  681. off

  682. because you

  683. hear of

  684. amazing

  685. conversion stories

  686. of total

  687. Christopher Hitchens,

  688. brother Peter Hitchens,

  689. Christopher Hitchens,

  690. total atheist,

  691. Peter Hitchens

  692. was as well,

  693. Peter Hitchens

  694. now just loves

  695. Jesus and

  696. shares the message

  697. of the resurrection.

  698. So how can we

  699. know?

  700. Come to our

  701. heavenly father

  702. and ask.

  703. Let's take out

  704. all the verses,

  705. Jesus didn't have

  706. verses.

  707. What follows

  708. on from this

  709. is Matthew

    Matthew 7:7–11

  710. 7,

  711. verses 7

  712. to 11.

  713. Ask

  714. and it will

  715. be given

  716. to you.

  717. Seek

  718. and you

  719. will find.

  720. Knock

  721. and the

  722. door

  723. will be

  724. opened

  725. to you.

  726. For

  727. everyone

  728. who asks

  729. receives.

  730. Those

  731. who seek

  732. find

  733. and to

  734. those

  735. who knock

  736. the door

  737. will be

  738. opened.

  739. Which

  740. of you

  741. their son

  742. or daughter

  743. asks for

  744. bread

  745. will give

  746. them a

  747. stone?

  748. or if

  749. they ask

  750. for a

  751. fish

  752. will give

  753. them a

  754. snake?

  755. If

  756. you

  757. then

  758. though you

  759. are evil

  760. know how to

  761. give good

  762. gifts to

  763. your children

  764. how much

  765. more will

  766. your father

  767. in heaven

  768. give good

  769. gifts to

  770. those who

  771. ask him?

  772. Ask

  773. seek

  774. knock.

  775. these

  776. words

  777. are often

  778. used

  779. in

  780. sermons

  781. to

  782. give

  783. the

  784. impression

  785. that

  786. God

  787. is

  788. our

  789. personal

  790. vending

  791. machine.

  792. I

  793. actually

  794. know

  795. someone

  796. from a

  797. different

  798. denomination

  799. and I

  800. don't want to

  801. make a

  802. judgment call

  803. here but

  804. I think

  805. they're

  806. wrong in

  807. this.

  808. I'm not

  809. judgment about

  810. the

  811. denomination

  812. but what

  813. they believe

  814. is that

  815. you can

  816. demand

  817. things from

  818. God.

  819. I demand

  820. a new

  821. surfboard

  822. or I

  823. demand

  824. a new

  825. car.

  826. I

  827. don't

  828. read that

  829. here.

  830. But if

  831. you want

  832. stuff

  833. just

  834. ask.

  835. I

  836. want

  837. more

  838. money

  839. or I

  840. want

  841. success

  842. in my

  843. relationships

  844. or business

  845. just ask

  846. and God

  847. will dispense

  848. our every

  849. wish.

  850. Now I

  851. actually do

  852. believe it

  853. doesn't hurt

  854. to ask.

  855. Ask

  856. sure.

  857. But God

  858. isn't the

  859. cosmic

  860. Santa Claus

  861. and we

  862. need only

  863. bring our

  864. Christmas

  865. wish list

  866. and God

  867. will tick

  868. it off

  869. for us

  870. or give

  871. us a

  872. hunk

  873. of

  874. coal.

  875. What I

  876. actually

  877. believe

  878. there's

  879. no harm

  880. in asking

  881. and God

  882. knows the

  883. difference

  884. between our

  885. needs and

  886. our wants

  887. we need

  888. to look at

  889. the context

  890. of ask

  891. seek

  892. knock.

  893. Followers

  894. of Jesus

  895. will find

  896. it difficult

  897. to not

  898. judge

  899. on the

  900. one hand

  901. and on

  902. the other

  903. hand be

  904. wisely

  905. discerning

  906. able to

  907. assess

  908. someone's

  909. willingness

  910. and openness

  911. to the

  912. gospel.

  913. It's a

  914. difficult

  915. ask

  916. so ask

  917. God.

  918. To ask

  919. naturally

  920. indicates

  921. prayer

  922. but seek

  923. and knock

  924. are also

  925. metaphors

  926. of prayer.

  927. Ask

  928. seek

  929. knock

  930. seems to

  931. suggest

  932. an

  933. escalation

  934. a rising

  935. scale

  936. of intensity

  937. in our

  938. prayers

  939. and points

  940. to the

  941. persistent

  942. manner in

  943. our lives

  944. of asking

  945. our heavenly

  946. father.

  947. Ask

  948. indicates

  949. how we

  950. come to

  951. God

  952. with

  953. humility

  954. conscious

  955. of a

  956. real deep

  957. felt

  958. need

  959. like a

  960. child

  961. asking

  962. for something

  963. from their

  964. parents.

  965. seek

  966. links

  967. prayer

  968. with a

  969. responsible

  970. action

  971. of

  972. pursuing

  973. God's

  974. will

  975. a bit

  976. like

  977. praying

  978. for a

  979. job

  980. and also

  981. actively

  982. pursuing

  983. work.

  984. You don't

  985. just have

  986. it fall

  987. in your

  988. lap

  989. necessarily.

  990. Knock

  991. includes

  992. perseverance

  993. if one

  994. is asking

  995. and seeking

  996. like you

  997. may spend

  998. a lifetime

  999. persistently

  1000. praying for

  1001. a family

  1002. member

  1003. or a

  1004. friend.

  1005. I've

  1006. got a

  1007. friend

  1008. that I've

  1009. been

  1010. friends

  1011. with

  1012. since

  1013. year

  1014. seven

  1015. and I

  1016. pray for

  1017. him

  1018. regularly.

  1019. He's

  1020. not a

  1021. Christian

  1022. and I

  1023. know

  1024. that

  1025. at one

  1026. stage

  1027. at

  1028. university

  1029. he really

  1030. told me

  1031. in certain

  1032. words

  1033. don't ever

  1034. talk to

  1035. me about

  1036. Jesus

  1037. again

  1038. but then

  1039. his

  1040. father

  1041. got

  1042. cancer

  1043. and he

  1044. said

  1045. is there

  1046. any

  1047. Bible

  1048. verses

  1049. that

  1050. could

  1051. help

  1052. him

  1053. and so

  1054. he's

  1055. not a

  1056. Christian

  1057. yet

  1058. but I

  1059. got him

  1060. a

  1061. Bible

  1062. and sent

  1063. it to

  1064. him

  1065. and I

  1066. got him

  1067. a

  1068. study

  1069. and he

  1070. actually

  1071. put

  1072. together

  1073. a

  1074. set

  1075. of

  1076. Bible

  1077. verses

  1078. for

  1079. his

  1080. father

  1081. to

  1082. read

  1083. and so

  1084. he still

  1085. hasn't

  1086. committed

  1087. his life

  1088. to

  1089. Jesus

  1090. but I

  1091. still

  1092. am

  1093. persistently

  1094. praying

  1095. and I

  1096. do think

  1097. even then

  1098. of my

  1099. daughter

  1100. when she

  1101. was three

  1102. the one

  1103. who did

  1104. that amazing

  1105. painting

  1106. anyway

  1107. I remember

  1108. I was working

  1109. in the study

  1110. and dad

  1111. dad

  1112. dad

  1113. and she

  1114. was just

  1115. knocking at

  1116. the door

  1117. I'm busy

  1118. I'm busy

  1119. I'm busy

  1120. but at

  1121. some point

  1122. you've got

  1123. to answer

  1124. that door

  1125. and I

  1126. answer

  1127. the door

  1128. and knock

  1129. pray

  1130. persistently

  1131. in the

  1132. sermon

  1133. on the

  1134. mount

  1135. Jesus

  1136. makes it

  1137. clear

  1138. what it

  1139. means to

  1140. live as

  1141. life

  1142. as a

  1143. member

  1144. of God's

  1145. kingdom

  1146. if we

  1147. want to

  1148. live

  1149. God's

  1150. way

  1151. loving

  1152. your

  1153. enemies

  1154. persevering

  1155. when

  1156. persecuted

  1157. giving

  1158. to the

  1159. needy

  1160. being salt

  1161. and light

  1162. in the

  1163. world

  1164. not worrying

  1165. about

  1166. tomorrow

  1167. storing up

  1168. treasures

  1169. in heaven

  1170. forgiving

  1171. others

  1172. not

  1173. sitting in

  1174. the seat

  1175. of judgment

  1176. yet

  1177. discerning

  1178. decisively

  1179. who have

  1180. rejected

  1181. Jesus

  1182. if we

  1183. want to

  1184. live God's

  1185. way

  1186. in God's

  1187. world

  1188. then we

  1189. ask

  1190. we seek

  1191. and we

  1192. knock

  1193. like the

  1194. persistent

  1195. widow

  1196. in Luke

  1197. 18

  1198. she kept

  1199. going to

  1200. that unjust

  1201. judge

  1202. until she

  1203. got a

  1204. result

  1205. don't give

  1206. up

  1207. bring it

  1208. all before

  1209. God

  1210. in prayer

  1211. and trust

  1212. if we

  1213. are going

  1214. to be

  1215. at all

  1216. serious

  1217. about

  1218. living

  1219. the life

  1220. Jesus

  1221. offers

  1222. on the

  1223. Sermon on

  1224. the Mount

  1225. then we

  1226. have to

  1227. ask our

  1228. heavenly

  1229. father

  1230. to strengthen

  1231. us by

  1232. his

  1233. Holy

  1234. Spirit

  1235. to enable

  1236. us to

  1237. live this

  1238. life

  1239. the life

  1240. God

  1241. intends

  1242. for us

  1243. and what

  1244. Jesus

  1245. says here

  1246. if humans

  1247. who are

  1248. naturally

  1249. evil

  1250. and you

  1251. notice that

  1252. he calls

  1253. us evil

  1254. in fact

  1255. remember the

  1256. rich young

  1257. ruler who

  1258. tries to

  1259. tick off

  1260. the Ten

  1261. Commandments

  1262. yes all

  1263. I have

  1264. things I've

  1265. done sell

  1266. everything

  1267. and follow

  1268. me but

  1269. when he

  1270. comes to

  1271. Jesus

  1272. as good

  1273. teacher

  1274. what must

  1275. I do

  1276. to inherit

  1277. eternal

  1278. life

  1279. and Jesus

  1280. says why

  1281. do you

  1282. call me

  1283. good

  1284. only God

  1285. is good

  1286. so let's

  1287. be clear

  1288. you who

  1289. are evil

  1290. give good

  1291. gifts to

  1292. your kids

  1293. and I hope

  1294. we do

  1295. how much

  1296. more will

  1297. God give

  1298. good gifts

  1299. to those

  1300. who ask

  1301. Bono the

  1302. lead singer

  1303. from U2

  1304. was once

  1305. asked do

  1306. you pray

  1307. and he

  1308. said yeah

  1309. of course

  1310. I pray

  1311. and he

  1312. said well

  1313. what sort

  1314. of things

  1315. do you

  1316. pray

  1317. and he

  1318. said I

  1319. pray that

  1320. God's

  1321. will will

  1322. be done

  1323. then it's

  1324. more likely

  1325. to happen

  1326. in Matthew

    Matthew 7:12

  1327. 7 verse 12

  1328. Jesus sums

  1329. up all

  1330. of it

  1331. he says

  1332. so in

  1333. everything

  1334. do unto

  1335. others

  1336. as you

  1337. would have

  1338. them

  1339. do

  1340. unto

  1341. you

  1342. this

  1343. sums

  1344. up

  1345. the

  1346. law

  1347. and

  1348. the

  1349. prophets

  1350. ask

  1351. and you

  1352. will

  1353. receive

  1354. seek

  1355. and you

  1356. will

  1357. find

  1358. knock

  1359. and the

  1360. door

  1361. will be

  1362. opened

  1363. unto

  1364. you

  1365. throughout

  1366. the

  1367. sermon

  1368. on the

  1369. mount

  1370. Jesus

  1371. references

  1372. the

  1373. old

  1374. testament

  1375. the

  1376. law

  1377. and the

  1378. prophets

  1379. and he

  1380. says here

  1381. it could

  1382. pretty much

  1383. be summed

  1384. up

  1385. in this

  1386. golden rule

  1387. severus

  1388. reputedly

  1389. had it

  1390. written on

  1391. his wall

  1392. in gold

  1393. do unto

  1394. others

  1395. as you

  1396. would have

  1397. them

  1398. do unto

  1399. you

  1400. there's a

  1401. misconception

  1402. people said

  1403. oh that's

  1404. just common

  1405. to all

  1406. religions

  1407. or all

  1408. philosophies

  1409. and faith

  1410. traditions

  1411. this is

  1412. actually not

  1413. the case

  1414. the parallels

  1415. to Jesus

  1416. teaching

  1417. appear in

  1418. the negative

  1419. one example

  1420. is Confucius

  1421. he wrote

  1422. do not

  1423. inflict on

  1424. others

  1425. what you

  1426. yourself

  1427. would not

  1428. wish done

  1429. to you

  1430. it's subtle

  1431. but it's

  1432. different

  1433. to refrain

  1434. from hurting

  1435. others

  1436. so you

  1437. don't get

  1438. harmed

  1439. it's not

  1440. the same

  1441. as doing

  1442. good to

  1443. others

  1444. even if

  1445. they don't

  1446. deserve it

  1447. the difference

  1448. between

  1449. for example

  1450. deciding not

  1451. to punch

  1452. my enemy

  1453. in the

  1454. nose

  1455. and deciding

  1456. to build

  1457. my enemy

  1458. a hospital

  1459. they're

  1460. dramatically

  1461. different

  1462. two different

  1463. ways of

  1464. living

  1465. one

  1466. is

  1467. negative

  1468. and one's

  1469. proactive

  1470. it's

  1471. positive

  1472. it's

  1473. affirmative

  1474. action

  1475. and that's

  1476. how we're

  1477. to live

  1478. there's no

  1479. parallel to

  1480. Jesus teaching

  1481. Jesus call

  1482. to love

  1483. is premised

  1484. on God's

  1485. love

  1486. his call

  1487. to love

  1488. enemies

  1489. doesn't

  1490. make sense

  1491. without

  1492. Jesus

  1493. repeated

  1494. emphasis

  1495. that God

  1496. is merciful

  1497. and gracious

  1498. to the

  1499. ungrateful

  1500. and the

  1501. wicked

  1502. and then

  1503. proving it

  1504. as Jesus

  1505. dies on the

  1506. cross for

  1507. his enemies

  1508. words

  1509. accompanied

  1510. with actions

  1511. why love

  1512. enemies

  1513. why be

  1514. gracious

  1515. why not

  1516. judge

  1517. show mercy

  1518. to the others

  1519. who don't

  1520. deserve it

  1521. because God

  1522. loves his

  1523. enemies

  1524. and shows

  1525. grace and

  1526. mercy to

  1527. those who

  1528. don't deserve

  1529. it

  1530. God's

  1531. judge

  1532. that's

  1533. his

  1534. job

  1535. the logic

  1536. is important

  1537. and we

  1538. get the

  1539. heartbeat

  1540. of Jesus

  1541. teaching

  1542. here

  1543. and I

  1544. want to

  1545. put this

  1546. in a

  1547. sentence

  1548. what we

  1549. think

  1550. lies at

  1551. the heart

  1552. of reality

  1553. shapes

  1554. what we

  1555. think

  1556. is an

  1557. authentic

  1558. human

  1559. life

  1560. what we

  1561. think

  1562. lies at

  1563. the heart

  1564. of reality

  1565. shapes

  1566. what we

  1567. think

  1568. is an

  1569. authentic

  1570. human

  1571. life

  1572. life

  1573. with

  1574. Jesus

  1575. now

  1576. and

  1577. forever

  1578. is

  1579. reality

  1580. Jesus

  1581. offers

  1582. life

  1583. can we

  1584. imagine

  1585. a world

  1586. where we're

  1587. all living

  1588. like

  1589. Jesus

  1590. where we're

  1591. not thinking

  1592. of our

  1593. own

  1594. needs

  1595. seeking

  1596. the best

  1597. for number

  1598. one

  1599. but actually

  1600. looking out

  1601. to help

  1602. others

  1603. sharing

  1604. the hope

  1605. of Jesus

  1606. Jesus

  1607. came into

  1608. this world

  1609. to make

  1610. that life

  1611. possible

  1612. the sermon

  1613. on the

  1614. mount

  1615. is a

  1616. glimpse

  1617. at the

  1618. relationships

  1619. of those

  1620. who follow

  1621. Christ

  1622. and what

  1623. the relationship

  1624. they'll find

  1625. themselves

  1626. engaged in

  1627. noticeably

  1628. transformed

  1629. by the

  1630. gospel

  1631. and living

  1632. for God's

  1633. upside down

  1634. kingdom

  1635. the rest

  1636. of the

  1637. chapter

  1638. I'm finishing

  1639. up here

  1640. is about

  1641. how gospel

  1642. can impact

  1643. our life

  1644. with warnings

  1645. to be

  1646. wise

  1647. and reminders

  1648. judgment

  1649. is coming

  1650. verse 13

  1651. enter through

  1652. the narrow

  1653. gate

  1654. wide is the

  1655. road that

  1656. leads to

  1657. destruction

  1658. verse 15

  1659. watch out

  1660. for false

  1661. prophets

  1662. wolves in

  1663. sheep's

  1664. clothing

  1665. by their

  1666. fruit

  1667. you will

  1668. know them

  1669. verse 21

  1670. not everyone

  1671. who says to

  1672. me

  1673. lord lord

  1674. will enter

  1675. the kingdom

  1676. of heaven

  1677. but

  1678. only the

  1679. ones who

  1680. do the

  1681. will of

  1682. my father

  1683. who is

  1684. in heaven

  1685. verse 24

  1686. everyone

  1687. who hears

  1688. these words

  1689. of mine

  1690. and puts

  1691. them into

  1692. practice

  1693. is like

  1694. a wise

  1695. person

  1696. who built

  1697. their house

  1698. on the

  1699. rock

  1700. you know

  1701. what happened

  1702. when he

  1703. finished

  1704. teaching

  1705. they were

  1706. amazed

  1707. there was

  1708. no one

  1709. taught

  1710. with such

  1711. authority

  1712. the preacher

  1713. who gave

  1714. the same

  1715. sermon

  1716. every week

  1717. week in

  1718. and week

  1719. out

  1720. was waiting

  1721. to see

  1722. if those

  1723. who listened

  1724. would respond

  1725. and take

  1726. action

  1727. we can't

  1728. walk away

  1729. from the

  1730. sermon

  1731. on the

  1732. mount

  1733. unaffected

  1734. we must

  1735. take action

  1736. in our

  1737. lives

  1738. it's one

  1739. thing to

  1740. know it

  1741. it's another

  1742. thing to

  1743. put it

  1744. into practice

  1745. and jc

  1746. ryle's got an

  1747. amazing quote

  1748. here about

  1749. this

  1750. doctrine is

  1751. useless

  1752. so it's one

  1753. thing to

  1754. know it

  1755. doctrine is

  1756. useless

  1757. if it's not

  1758. accompanied by

  1759. a holy

  1760. life

  1761. it is worse

  1762. than useless

  1763. it does

  1764. positive harm

  1765. something of

  1766. the image of

  1767. christ must

  1768. be seen

  1769. and observed

  1770. by others

  1771. in our

  1772. private life

  1773. and habits

  1774. and character

  1775. and doings

  1776. so church

  1777. ask

  1778. and it will

  1779. be given

  1780. to you

  1781. seek

  1782. and you

  1783. will find

  1784. knock

  1785. and the

  1786. door will

  1787. be opened

  1788. to you

  1789. for everyone

  1790. who asks

  1791. receives

  1792. those who

  1793. seek

  1794. find

  1795. and to

  1796. those who

  1797. knock

  1798. the door

  1799. will be

  1800. opened

  1801. let's pray

  1802. heavenly

  1803. father

  1804. we thank

  1805. you

  1806. that

  1807. you

  1808. knock

  1809. at

  1810. our

  1811. hearts

  1812. and you

  1813. say

  1814. let me

  1815. in

  1816. lord

  1817. open our

  1818. hearts

  1819. to you

  1820. to your

  1821. message

  1822. to your

  1823. word

  1824. heavenly

  1825. father

  1826. we ask

  1827. now that

  1828. we can

  1829. have the

  1830. beautiful

  1831. attitudes

  1832. outlined

  1833. in the

  1834. sermon

  1835. on the

  1836. mount

  1837. we pray

  1838. that we

  1839. can love

  1840. our

  1841. enemies

  1842. lord

  1843. we pray

  1844. that we

  1845. can

  1846. hunger

  1847. and thirst

  1848. for

  1849. righteousness

  1850. lord

  1851. we pray

  1852. that we

  1853. can

  1854. seek

  1855. you

  1856. with

  1857. all

  1858. our

  1859. hearts

  1860. lord

  1861. we

  1862. pray

  1863. that

  1864. our

  1865. eyes

  1866. will

  1867. see

  1868. the

  1869. need

  1870. in

  1871. this

  1872. world

  1873. our

  1874. hands

  1875. will

  1876. reach

  1877. out

  1878. with

  1879. your

  1880. hands

  1881. our

  1882. feet

  1883. will

  1884. go

  1885. where

  1886. you

  1887. will

  1888. take

  1889. us

  1890. to

  1891. share

  1892. the

  1893. gospel

  1894. and

  1895. your

  1896. great

  1897. word

  1898. lord

  1899. we

  1900. knock

  1901. and we

  1902. ask

  1903. that

  1904. you

  1905. answer

  1906. these

  1907. prayers

  1908. your

  1909. gospel

  1910. will

  1911. go

  1912. forth

  1913. your

  1914. kingdom

  1915. will

  1916. grow

  1917. in

  1918. each

  1919. of

  1920. us

  1921. and

  1922. your

  1923. amen
