  1. I'd be grateful if you grab your Bibles.

  2. Also, if you've got the St. Paul's app,

  3. that would be particularly useful for you this morning.

  4. I've got lots of things to run through.

  5. And if you don't have the St. Paul's app,

  6. pen and paper will also do.

  7. You just might want to just write down

  8. heaps of different references as I go through.

  9. Let me pray.

  10. Gracious God,

  11. Lord, every one of us are dealing with the issue of the fall

  12. from Genesis 3,

  13. where we have rejected your glory, your majesty,

  14. your purpose for our lives and chosen it for ourselves.

  15. One of the enormous consequences of that has been

  16. throughout the history of your world from that moment,

  17. prejudice in the heart towards other people.

  18. Lord, we pray that that might be your conviction upon us this morning

  19. as we look forward and towards in the coming weeks

  20. of Christ being the solution to that.

  21. So, Lord, give us tender hearts to ourselves, we pray.

  22. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  23. It was November 2005.

  24. I was in Alice Springs,

  25. the centre of our country here,

  26. on the invitation of the Bible Society

  27. to be the main speaker at event.

  28. It was an event to raise awareness

  29. for their ministry to remote areas of Australia

  30. and in particular to Aboriginal communities

  31. and the necessity for the word of God

  32. to be translated into various languages

  33. for those Aboriginal communities

  34. that might have God's word in their own hand.

  35. The plan was I would speak at an event

  36. in an aircraft hangar

  37. with the Bible Society plane behind me

  38. on the Friday night.

  39. Saturday was a free day to explore

  40. and then Sunday I was to preach in a local church.

  41. A friend of mine came along with me for the trip.

  42. We, in fact, spent the Saturday

  43. exploring many parts of the outback,

  44. which in those days had no speed limits

  45. and I didn't realise you could get a Corolla

  46. up to 190 kilometres an hour,

  47. but it turns out you can.

  48. Then we came back, dropped off the hire car

  49. and we spent the evening in the main part of Alice Springs

  50. and then we walked back to our hotel.

  51. It was pitch black along this pathway

  52. which wove its way along the riverbank,

  53. dry riverbank in Alice Springs.

  54. We noticed as we were heading back to our hotel,

  55. we were the only white guys around,

  56. in fact, we were the only people around,

  57. until we noticed a group of about 20 Indigenous Australians,

  58. Aboriginals in the riverbank

  59. drinking what it appeared to be drinking alcohol

  60. and then we walked up, we noticed that

  61. and the upper cross on the right-hand side

  62. was more of a slummy area of Alice Springs

  63. and we were noticing quite a lot of commotion,

  64. a lot of yelling going on in that area.

  65. And let me just pause there for a moment.

  66. I think it's fair to say that in that moment,

  67. both of us were a little bit nervous.

  68. We were fully aware of our whiteness at that point,

  69. if you like,

  70. that this was a moment that both of us

  71. had experienced previously.

  72. It is fair to say that I grew up

  73. marinating in a culture of prejudice towards Aboriginals,

  74. even as I said last week,

  75. that I still had friends who were Aboriginals.

  76. It came, that prejudice came from the rhetoric of the culture,

  77. but also my own negative experiences

  78. at both school and in the workforce.

  79. You could say my friend's experience was even more acute than mine.

  80. He spent a good part of his childhood

  81. growing up in a town in New South Wales called Walgett

  82. and it's a very troubled place in terms of race relations.

  83. So in this moment,

  84. on this Saturday evening in 2005,

  85. both of our prejudices came to the surface.

  86. And as we walked along the path,

  87. I said to him quietly,

  88. do you see the group down on the left?

  89. He said, yeah, I see them.

  90. And then he said,

  91. what about the one on the right

  92. that's now coming out of the slum?

  93. It's about 20 Aboriginals of all sorts of generations

  94. coming out of the slum area.

  95. And in that moment,

  96. both of us came up with what we would call an escape plan.

  97. What are we going to do if things deteriorate?

  98. As both of us had personally experienced in the past.

  99. We both experienced it.

  100. We noticed that as we walked along the riverbank

  101. that this group that was coming from the right

  102. was going to intersect us on the pathway

  103. unless we either started walking slower

  104. or we started speeding up.

  105. And we were sort of hoping on one level

  106. that they would notice the two white guys.

  107. Walking along in the pitch back in an area

  108. that you don't see any of the white guys in Alice Springs.

  109. And then they did see us.

  110. And as it was very obvious,

  111. as we approached,

  112. this group was going to come to the,

  113. almost hit us on the pathway.

  114. And as we almost hit, as we crossed,

  115. the lead elderly Aboriginal lady

  116. put her arms out like that.

  117. And she stopped the group.

  118. And they all stopped,

  119. all pulled up

  120. and allowed us to walk through.

  121. And as we walked through,

  122. she said,

  123. good evening, gentlemen.

  124. We turned and said good evening

  125. to her, to the group,

  126. and walked on in silence

  127. for about another 20 metres.

  128. And my friend said to me,

  129. how bad do I feel?

  130. I went, yep, absolutely.

  131. God used that moment

  132. to expose something of the sin

  133. of racial prejudice

  134. that lurked in my heart.

  135. And it did not escape my moment,

  136. my attention,

  137. even that night,

  138. that the night before,

  139. I was speaking at an aircraft carrier

  140. with the Bible open,

  141. imploring the people there

  142. to put their resources and finances

  143. behind gospel ministry

  144. to remote communities in this country,

  145. and prejudice lurked in my heart.

  146. There was a disconnection

  147. between what I knew

  148. to be right and good

  149. and part of God's purposes

  150. and what still was lurking in my heart.

  151. I was treated with more dignity

  152. than what I afforded them in my mind

  153. and in my heart in that moment.

  154. And it was a long way

  155. from my starting point last week

  156. where I said all people

  157. have one origins

  158. by divine design.

  159. And the implication of that last week

  160. is the dignity,

  161. the extreme dignity

  162. of all human beings.

  163. The creation doctrine,

  164. the view of creation,

  165. the Christian view of creation

  166. does in contrast

  167. with every other philosophical system

  168. in our world,

  169. in that sense.

  170. And particularly,

  171. the underlying system

  172. that's operating in our society

  173. at the moment

  174. of atheistic evolutionary theory

  175. that's broadly accepted as fact

  176. in our secular society.

  177. Charles Darwin's Origin of Species

  178. gave rise to the separation

  179. and the classification

  180. of plant and animal species.

  181. Enormously helpful in so many ways.

  182. A breakthrough in so many ways.

  183. Unfortunately,

  184. it flowed over

  185. into categorising humans

  186. into a hierarchy

  187. which arranged them

  188. according to evolutionary advancement.

  189. Now, that's not to say

  190. racism didn't exist

  191. before Charles Darwin's Origin of Species.

  192. I'm not saying that.

  193. But I do agree

  194. with what Stephen Jay Gould

  195. wrote on this issue

  196. between the connection,

  197. the connection between racism

  198. and evolutionary theory.

  199. Now, Gould was an evolutionary biologist himself

  200. who significantly opposed creationism

  201. and he hated Christianity.

  202. Hated Christianity.

  203. And he wrote,

  204. biological arguments for racism

  205. may have been common before 1850.

  206. That is, before Darwin's Origin of Species.

  207. But they increased by orders of magnitude

  208. following the acceptance

  209. of evolutionary theory

  210. which he himself did.

  211. And that's where I think the problem is.

  212. As I said last week,

  213. it is difficult to deliver

  214. as our secular culture wants to do

  215. on the equality of all people

  216. when at the same time

  217. you explain the differences

  218. in terms of some people groups

  219. being less evolved than others.

  220. And as we saw last week,

  221. the Bible knows nothing

  222. of the hierarchy of races

  223. as evolutionary theory does.

  224. In fact, the biblical view is

  225. there is one race.

  226. One race.

  227. The human race made in the image of God.

  228. And yet, as I said last week,

  229. while the Christian faith

  230. has got enormous to contribute,

  231. there's blockages here

  232. for people accepting it

  233. because of the failures

  234. of the institutional church

  235. over the years.

  236. And one of the most serious

  237. and damaging interpretations

  238. of the Bible

  239. on this whole issue of race

  240. is in Genesis chapter 9.

    Genesis 9 chapter mention

  241. So if you've got Genesis chapter 9,

    Genesis 9 chapter mention

  242. go there quickly with me.

  243. Genesis 9 verses 18 to 27.

    Genesis 9:18–27

  244. It's at the end of Genesis 9.

  245. As I said, Noah and his family

  246. settling down into life

  247. after the flood.

  248. Noah plants a vineyard,

  249. drinks a little bit too much

  250. of the vino,

  251. and ends up lying naked

  252. in his tent.

  253. His son Ham,

  254. right, Ham,

  255. sees his father's nakedness,

  256. thinks it's a joke,

  257. goes and tells his brothers

  258. about it.

  259. And when Noah finds out

  260. what his youngest son has done,

  261. he pronounces a curse

  262. on Canaan,

  263. who is Ham's youngest son.

  264. So Genesis 9, 25.

  265. Cursed be Canaan,

  266. the lowest of slaves

  267. he will be to his brothers.

  268. He also said,

  269. Blessed be the Lord,

  270. the God of Shem.

  271. May Canaan be the slave of Shem.

  272. May God extend the territory

  273. of Japheth.

  274. May Japheth live

  275. in the tents of Shem

  276. and may Canaan be his slave.

  277. Now throughout the last 20 centuries,

  278. numerous Christians,

  279. Jewish and Muslim writers

  280. have connected the curse of Ham,

  281. their curse of Canaan,

  282. to black Africans in particular.

  283. This text became the standard text

  284. in defence of slavery in England,

  285. the southern states of America

  286. and apartheid in South Africa.

  287. That is,

  288. because they translated the name Ham

  289. as black or burnt,

  290. the curse was applicable

  291. in their view for all black people.

  292. They also concluded

  293. that Ham's brother,

  294. Japheth,

  295. represented white people

  296. and therefore God commands

  297. the slavery

  298. or the subjugation,

  299. if you like,

  300. of black people

  301. by white people.

  302. Now,

  303. I won't go into all the details.

  304. There's extensive details around this,

  305. but simply to say,

  306. you've got to do some fancy,

  307. I mean some really fancy

  308. dance work

  309. with the text

  310. to come to that kind of a conclusion.

  311. I mean some really,

  312. really fancy work.

  313. But some people have done it

  314. because I believe in the end

  315. it has supported

  316. a particular prejudice.

  317. Now,

  318. I'm glad we've got the Bible

  319. and God's perspective

  320. on the history of humanity

  321. and the Bible does not relate

  322. to our racial

  323. or ethnic differences

  324. in terms of lower life forms

  325. or in terms of God

  326. having favorites,

  327. but in terms of sin.

  328. As we read there

  329. in Genesis 5,

  330. our rejection of God.

  331. You see,

  332. on that night

  333. in Alice Springs

  334. in 2005,

  335. my prejudice,

  336. my sinful heart

  337. was the problem.

  338. Not the government,

  339. not institutions.

  340. My prejudice,

  341. my sinful heart

  342. was the problem.

  343. But it doesn't just identify

  344. sin as the core problem

  345. of racial prejudice

  346. and ethnocentricity.

  347. Like in terms of the Bible

  348. it doesn't just identify that,

  349. but it also reveals

  350. a solution for us

  351. as we will pick up

  352. in the next couple of weeks

  353. as well.

  354. You see,

  355. the Bible sees the fracturing

  356. of all relationships

  357. due to the rejection

  358. of God in Genesis 3.

  359. I think it was fantastic

  360. what Zoran said

  361. when he got up here

  362. and talks about his role

  363. supporting God's work

  364. of reordering

  365. a disordered creation.

  366. God did create order

  367. out of chaos

  368. and sin

  369. in Genesis 3

  370. made everything

  371. back into chaos again.

  372. That's the consequence

  373. of sin.

  374. A disordered

  375. creator,

  376. a creation.

  377. Adam and Eve

  378. were created

  379. in God's image

  380. to display

  381. his majesty

  382. and when they

  383. rejected God

  384. and his purpose

  385. and wanted to make it

  386. all about them,

  387. everything broke.

  388. And consequences

  389. was that all relationships

  390. were smashed.

  391. Before sin,

  392. they were both

  393. naked

  394. and felt

  395. no shame.

  396. No shame.

  397. Naked

  398. and no shame.

  399. There was intimacy

  400. and acceptance.

  401. And neither of them,

  402. I'm assuming,

  403. were supermodels

  404. or anything like that.

  405. They felt no shame

  406. for the other.

  407. And as soon

  408. as they rejected God,

  409. they ran for clothes.

  410. They hid

  411. from God's presence.

  412. A barrier

  413. immediately went up

  414. between Adam

  415. and Eve.

  416. Judgmentalism

  417. came in

  418. for the very first time.

  419. Assessment

  420. came in

  421. for the very first time.

  422. Shame

  423. and self-preservation

  424. kicked in.

  425. From the moment

  426. they reject God,

  427. the unity of humans

  428. in the image of God

  429. became mirrored

  430. by the unity

  431. of sin.

  432. Romans 1

  433. is the Apostle Paul's

  434. version of the fall

  435. of humanity,

  436. making clear

  437. that all

  438. of humanity

  439. is contaminated

  440. by sin.

  441. It's an ugly picture

  442. of sinful behavior.

  443. Read it when you go home.

  444. It's an ugly picture.

  445. And then

  446. he says

  447. our unity

  448. in this

  449. is explicit

  450. in Romans 3

  451. 23

  452. all

  453. have sinned

  454. and fallen short

  455. of the glory

  456. of God.

  457. You see

  458. the Bible's picture

  459. here is

  460. that

  461. the unity

  462. that we have

  463. as sinful

  464. people

  465. rejecting God

  466. is not

  467. because we

  468. sin

  469. but because

  470. we're already

  471. sinners

  472. by nature.

  473. One of the most

  474. I think the Bible's

  475. most important

  476. passage on this issue

  477. is Romans 5

    Romans 5:12–19

  478. verses 12

  479. to 19.

  480. Write that one down.

  481. It explains

  482. right there

  483. that Adam's

  484. sin

  485. right at the

  486. beginning

  487. brought to

  488. the entire

  489. human race

  490. that flows

  491. from him

  492. which is all

  493. of us

  494. both

  495. sinful

  496. natures

  497. and

  498. God's

  499. judgment

  500. and

  501. condemnation

  502. for it.

  503. Every

  504. single

  505. human

  506. being

  507. from

  508. Adam

  509. is

  510. connected

  511. to his

  512. sin

  513. by nature.

  514. We are

  515. born

  516. into this

  517. world

  518. with sinful

  519. natures

  520. that trace

  521. back to

  522. Adam's

  523. sin.

  524. So

  525. Romans 5

  526. 12

  527. sin

  528. came into

  529. the world

  530. through one

  531. man

  532. and death

  533. through sin

  534. and so

  535. death

  536. spread to

  537. all

  538. people

  539. because

  540. all

  541. sinned.

  542. We are

  543. born

  544. with inner

  545. lives

  546. that are

  547. directed

  548. towards

  549. ourselves

  550. and what

  551. we want

  552. and not

  553. directed

  554. towards God

  555. and what

  556. he wants.

  557. and because

  558. we have

  559. inner

  560. lives

  561. bent

  562. away

  563. from

  564. God

  565. and as

  566. the

  567. great

  568. church

  569. reformer

  570. Martin

  571. Luther

  572. said

  573. a German

  574. theologian

  575. said

  576. we are

  577. curvedly

  578. into

  579. ourselves.

  580. Our

  581. sinful

  582. nature

  583. means we

  584. are curved

  585. in

  586. towards

  587. ourselves

  588. and

  589. because

  590. we are

  591. curved in

  592. towards

  593. ourselves

  594. right from

  595. the moment

  596. of conception

  597. when we

  598. are old

  599. enough to

  600. know right

  601. from wrong

  602. we act

  603. in sinful

  604. ways.

  605. We sin

  606. because we

  607. are already

  608. sinners.

  609. Perhaps a

  610. helpful way

  611. to think

  612. about that

  613. would be

  614. an apple

  615. tree,

  616. not specifically

  617. an apple

  618. tree,

  619. pick on

  620. any fruit

  621. tree if

  622. you like.

  623. Ask yourself

  624. the question

  625. whether a

  626. tree

  627. produces,

  628. an apple

  629. tree produces

  630. apples because

  631. it's an

  632. apple tree

  633. or does

  634. the tree

  635. become an

  636. apple tree

  637. when it

  638. first produces

  639. an apple?

  640. That's not

  641. a chicken

  642. and egg

  643. thing,

  644. all right?

  645. Talking about

  646. its very

  647. nature.

  648. The reality

  649. is an

  650. apple tree

  651. can grow

  652. for many

  653. many years

  654. before it

  655. produces

  656. its first

  657. fruit and

  658. when it

  659. does finally

  660. produce apples

  661. we'd say

  662. that tree

  663. is producing

  664. fruit in

  665. accordance

  666. with its

  667. nature.

  668. Psalm 51

  669. 5,

  670. surely I

  671. was sinful

  672. at birth,

  673. sinful from

  674. the time

  675. my mother

  676. conceived

  677. me.

  678. We are

  679. sinners by

  680. nature who

  681. show themselves

  682. to be

  683. sinners by

  684. choice.

  685. Now,

  686. everyone who

  687. is a

  688. parent knows

  689. this to be

  690. true from

  691. experience.

  692. I didn't

  693. have to teach

  694. my children,

  695. I've not had

  696. to teach one

  697. of them to

  698. say no,

  699. to disobey my

  700. directives,

  701. to throw

  702. food on

  703. the floor,

  704. to pinch,

  705. to poke

  706. out the

  707. tongue,

  708. to throw

  709. themselves on

  710. the floor

  711. to kick

  712. and scream.

  713. Didn't have

  714. to teach

  715. any of

  716. them,

  717. although

  718. there have

  719. been times

  720. when I've

  721. joined them

  722. in the

  723. throwing

  724. myself on

  725. the floor

  726. kicking and

  727. screaming

  728. thing.

  729. Didn't teach

  730. them any

  731. of those

  732. things,

  733. and if

  734. those of you

  735. are prejudiced,

  736. neither did

  737. that,

  738. so it didn't

  739. come from

  740. her either.

  741. they did

  742. get it

  743. from me,

  744. but didn't

  745. teach it.

  746. Same as

  747. my parents

  748. didn't teach

  749. me any of

  750. those things,

  751. but I did

  752. get it

  753. from them.

  754. I, like

  755. my parents

  756. before me,

  757. have spent

  758. my time

  759. trying to

  760. correct that

  761. which comes

  762. by nature.

  763. There is a

  764. solidarity in

  765. being created

  766. in the image

  767. of God

  768. for the glory

  769. of God,

  770. and solidarity

  771. in all of

  772. us falling

  773. short of

  774. God's glory

  775. because of

  776. our sin.

  777. And we

  778. see this

  779. solidarity

  780. in sin

  781. and its

  782. consequences

  783. being played

  784. out in

  785. this racial

  786. ethnocentricity

  787. terms in

  788. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  789. 10 and

  790. 11.

  791. So if you've

  792. got your

  793. Bibles,

  794. flick there

  795. fairly quick.

  796. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  797. 10 is

  798. the so-called

  799. table of

  800. nations.

  801. And Genesis

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  802. chapter 10,

  803. the one point

  804. that Genesis

    Genesis 10 chapter mention

  805. chapter 10

  806. makes,

  807. or the one

  808. point I can

  809. find in

  810. any way

  811. that it

  812. makes,

  813. is that it

  814. stresses

  815. the common

  816. origins of

  817. all people.

  818. That's what

  819. Genesis 10

  820. does,

  821. the common

  822. origins of

  823. all people.

  824. And the

  825. relationship

  826. between Genesis

  827. 10 and

  828. 11 is

  829. also very

  830. significant

  831. because the

  832. generational

  833. account of

  834. the common

  835. origins of

  836. all people

  837. in the

  838. original language

  839. begins at

  840. chapter 10

  841. verse 1

  842. and it

  843. ends at

  844. chapter 11

  845. verse 9.

  846. That is,

  847. the Tower of

  848. Babel account

  849. in chapter 11

  850. explains how

  851. and why people

  852. spread out

  853. and fill the

  854. earth with

  855. all their

  856. different languages.

  857. even though

  858. we have a

  859. common origin.

  860. It reveals

  861. that the

  862. division

  863. into

  864. different

  865. people

  866. groups

  867. with

  868. different

  869. languages

  870. was a

  871. consequence

  872. of sin.

  873. Verse 4,

  874. come,

  875. let us

  876. build,

  877. let us

  878. build a

  879. city,

  880. build

  881. ourselves

  882. a city

  883. with a

  884. tower that

  885. reaches to

  886. the heavens

  887. purpose,

  888. so that

  889. we may

  890. make a

  891. name for

  892. ourselves

  893. and not

  894. be scattered

  895. over the

  896. whole face

  897. of the

  898. earth.

  899. The

  900. Tower of

  901. Babel

  902. is a

  903. collective

  904. attempt by

  905. humanity

  906. to do

  907. what Adam

  908. and Eve

  909. attempted to

  910. do in

  911. the Garden

  912. of Eden

  913. in Genesis

  914. 3.

  915. God

  916. and

  917. make a

  918. name for

  919. ourselves.

  920. Let's do

  921. it together.

  922. We've got

  923. numbers now.

  924. Let's do

  925. it together.

  926. And God's

  927. judgment on

  928. them was to

  929. forever hinder

  930. their working

  931. together.

  932. He scatters

  933. them,

  934. confuses their

  935. language as

  936. an act of

  937. judgment.

  938. judgment.

  939. And so

  940. taken together,

  941. Genesis 10

  942. reveals our

  943. unity as

  944. one blood

  945. together under

  946. God's

  947. blessing.

  948. And Genesis

  949. 11, our

  950. diversity into

  951. many languages

  952. and groups

  953. under God's

  954. judgment.

  955. judgment.

  956. And the

  957. foundational

  958. problem here

  959. is the

  960. human heart

  961. that wants

  962. to reject

  963. God.

  964. The Bible

  965. doesn't just

  966. tell us

  967. why we have

  968. racism and

  969. ethnic pride,

  970. it also gives

  971. us a solution

  972. to it too.

  973. Genesis

  974. 10 and

  975. 11

  976. sets the

  977. stage

  978. for the

  979. great

  980. plan of

  981. redemption

  982. that begins

  983. in Genesis

  984. 12.

  985. It's the

  986. hinge of

  987. the Bible

  988. that holds

  989. the Bible

  990. again.

  991. In Genesis

  992. 12, it's

  993. the promise

  994. to Abraham.

  995. The Lord

  996. said to

  997. Abraham,

  998. leave your

  999. country,

  1000. your people,

  1001. your father's

  1002. house,

  1003. or to go to

  1004. the land,

  1005. I will show

  1006. you, I

  1007. will make

  1008. you into a

  1009. great nation

  1010. and I will

  1011. bless you,

  1012. I will make

  1013. your name

  1014. great and

  1015. you will be

  1016. a blessing.

  1017. I will

  1018. bless those

  1019. who bless

  1020. you and

  1021. whoever curses

  1022. you I will

  1023. curse,

  1024. and all

  1025. peoples on

  1026. earth will

  1027. be blessed

  1028. through you.

  1029. Tower of

  1030. Babel, let's

  1031. make a great

  1032. name for

  1033. ourselves.

  1034. Let's

  1035. storm depose

  1036. God.

  1037. Genesis

  1038. 12, God

  1039. says, no

  1040. Abraham, I'll

  1041. make a great

  1042. name out of

  1043. you and

  1044. through you

  1045. and your

  1046. great name,

  1047. all nations

  1048. of the world

  1049. will be

  1050. blessed.

  1051. God's

  1052. call on

  1053. Abraham here

  1054. is a

  1055. direct

  1056. response to

  1057. the disastrous

  1058. situation

  1059. described in

  1060. Genesis 3

  1061. to 11.

  1062. This is the

  1063. turning point

  1064. of the

  1065. Bible that

  1066. drives the

  1067. rest of the

  1068. biblical

  1069. narrative.

  1070. This is the

  1071. introduction to

  1072. God's

  1073. spectacular plan

  1074. of redemption

  1075. for all

  1076. people, a

  1077. plan that

  1078. culminates in

  1079. Jesus.

  1080. God's focus

  1081. on Abraham in

  1082. this moment is

  1083. not exclusive,

  1084. but to use

  1085. this one

  1086. individual and

  1087. his descendants

  1088. to bless the

  1089. entire world.

  1090. The purpose of

  1091. God in

  1092. choosing Israel

  1093. was to

  1094. witness to

  1095. the universal

  1096. power and

  1097. love of God

  1098. for all

  1099. people.

  1100. Even in the

  1101. Old Testament

  1102. you see that

  1103. again and

  1104. again and

  1105. again, God's

  1106. plans for all

  1107. the nations is

  1108. amazing in its

  1109. scope and its

  1110. vision.

  1111. This God, the

  1112. God of the

  1113. Bible, is not a

  1114. racist in any

  1115. sense.

  1116. He does not

  1117. have favorites in

  1118. any sense.

  1119. The choosing of

  1120. Israel was not

  1121. for ethnocentric

  1122. purposes, but for

  1123. universal redemption.

  1124. But Israel,

  1125. oh,

  1126. curvedly in on

  1127. itself with its

  1128. heart,

  1129. failed consistently

  1130. in living for that

  1131. purpose.

  1132. They took the

  1133. role,

  1134. ultimately,

  1135. of being

  1136. racially,

  1137. morally

  1138. superior.

  1139. They

  1140. consistently

  1141. forgot the

  1142. reason God

  1143. chose them.

  1144. And it was

  1145. still the case

  1146. when Jesus

  1147. enters the

  1148. scene in the

  1149. New Testament.

  1150. But with

  1151. his coming,

  1152. the coming

  1153. of God

  1154. himself in

  1155. human flesh,

  1156. with him

  1157. coming, a

  1158. radically new

  1159. way of

  1160. defining what

  1161. the people of

  1162. God is,

  1163. arrives, namely

  1164. faith in

  1165. him.

  1166. Faith in

  1167. Jesus trumps

  1168. ethnicity and

  1169. heritage.

  1170. And over and

  1171. over again, you

  1172. see this in the

  1173. Gospels.

  1174. story of the

  1175. good Samaritan,

  1176. Luke 10,

  1177. the healing of

  1178. the ten lepers,

  1179. and only the

  1180. foreigner is the

  1181. one who comes

  1182. back with humble

  1183. gratitude in Luke

  1184. 17.

  1185. The healing of the

  1186. Syriaphonician's

  1187. daughter in Mark

  1188. 7, the worshipping

  1189. of the wise men

  1190. from the east in

  1191. Matthew 2, and in

1192. Luke 4, as we just

1193. had read out to us

  1194. by Flora, Jesus

  1195. tells a story taken

  1196. from 1 Kings 17 in

  1197. the Old Testament.

  1198. It's a story about

  1199. God's passing over

  1200. all the ethnic

  1201. Jews to bring a

  1202. miraculous blessing

  1203. to a foreign

  1204. Gentile from the

  1205. land of Phoenicia.

  1206. And the second

  1207. story from 2 Kings 5,

  1208. again, the point

  1209. is, of all the

  1210. people in the

  1211. world that God

  1212. might have chosen

  1213. to heal of

  1214. leprosy, he

  1215. chooses a foreign

  1216. king, a Syrian,

  1217. not a Jew.

  1218. And so when they

  1219. heard Jesus tell

  1220. that story, what

  1221. did they do to

  1222. him?

  1223. In that very

  1224. moment, they

  1225. attempted to kill

  1226. him.

  1227. Ethnic pride ran

  1228. deep.

  1229. And the point

  1230. that Jesus was

  1231. making is that

  1232. he is the

  1233. end of

  1234. ethnocentricity

  1235. and racial

  1236. pride.

  1237. He says that

  1238. he has come

  1239. to redeem

  1240. people from

  1241. every ethnic

  1242. group, not

  1243. just one

  1244. or a few.

  1245. God's plan

  1246. of redemption,

  1247. which starts

  1248. with the

  1249. promise of

  1250. Abraham, finds

  1251. his fulfillment

  1252. in the life,

  1253. the ministry,

  1254. the death,

  1255. the resurrection

  1256. of Jesus

  1257. Christ.

  1258. And we're

  1259. going to talk

  1260. more about

  1261. on that next

  1262. week.

  1263. But for now,

  1264. let me give you

  1265. a taster.

  1266. Galatians 3

    Galatians 3:13

  1267. verses 13

  1268. and 14.

  1269. Christ redeemed

  1270. us from the

  1271. curse of the

  1272. law by

  1273. becoming a

  1274. curse for

  1275. us.

  1276. For it is

  1277. written,

  1278. cursed is

  1279. everyone who

  1280. is hung on

  1281. a tree.

  1282. That is,

  1283. he redeemed

  1284. us by his

  1285. death on the

  1286. cross.

  1287. And then it

  1288. continues on.

  1289. He redeemed

  1290. us in order

  1291. that the

  1292. blessing given

  1293. to Abraham

  1294. might come

  1295. to the

  1296. Gentiles

  1297. through Christ

  1298. Jesus.

  1299. The plan

  1300. of Abraham

  1301. gets worked

  1302. out in

  1303. Christ and

  1304. his death

  1305. on the

  1306. cross.

  1307. With

  1308. Abraham,

  1309. God set

  1310. in motion

  1311. a plan

  1312. of redemption

  1313. that overturns

  1314. every curse

  1315. for everyone

  1316. who receives

  1317. the blessing

  1318. of Abraham.

  1319. And that

  1320. blessing

  1321. is the

  1322. forgiveness

  1323. of sin,

  1324. forgiveness

  1325. for our

  1326. rejection of

  1327. God,

  1328. the acceptance

  1329. of God,

  1330. the adoption

  1331. into his

  1332. eternal family,

  1333. whatever your

  1334. racial,

  1335. ethnic group

  1336. is.

  1337. And it all

  1338. comes through

  1339. Jesus Christ,

  1340. the descendant

  1341. of Abraham.

  1342. As Matthew

  1343. 1-1 tells us,

  1344. Jesus Christ,

  1345. the son of

  1346. Abraham.

  1347. God's

  1348. redemptive

  1349. plan

  1350. has always

  1351. been to

  1352. save and

  1353. bless people

  1354. from all

  1355. peoples of

  1356. the earth

  1357. and to

  1358. unite them

  1359. together

  1360. with him

  1361. as his

  1362. people

  1363. through his

  1364. son Jesus.

  1365. And it's

  1366. remarkable,

  1367. in fact,

  1368. that 2,000

  1369. years later,

  1370. the geographical

  1371. spread of the

  1372. Christian faith,

  1373. as I've said

  1374. before,

  1375. is virtually

  1376. identical on

  1377. every inhabitable

  1378. continent in the

  1379. world.

  1380. world.

  1381. That is

  1382. very

  1383. unusual.

  1384. That is,

  1385. the point

  1386. is,

  1387. Christianity

  1388. hasn't appealed

  1389. just to one

  1390. or two

  1391. racial groups,

  1392. ethnic groups,

  1393. cultural groups.

  1394. It has equal

  1395. appeal across

  1396. the board.

  1397. And the main

  1398. point of today

  1399. has been to

  1400. show us

  1401. that the

  1402. source of

  1403. racism,

  1404. ethnic

  1405. pride,

  1406. is a

  1407. sinful

  1408. human

  1409. heart.

  1410. Racial

  1411. prejudice

  1412. runs deep

  1413. in every

  1414. single

  1415. human

  1416. heart.

  1417. That's my

  1418. point.

  1419. We are all

  1420. unified in

  1421. it.

  1422. Our problem

  1423. is not

  1424. primarily

  1425. biological,

  1426. it's not

  1427. evolution,

  1428. it's not

  1429. people's

  1430. interpretation

  1431. of the

  1432. Bible,

  1433. it's not

  1434. politics,

  1435. it's not

  1436. institutions,

  1437. it's not

  1438. governments,

  1439. it's the

  1440. heart.

  1441. Your

  1442. heart,

  1443. my

  1444. heart,

  1445. that's

  1446. the

  1447. problem.

  1448. It's the

  1449. sin and

  1450. the

  1451. prejudice

  1452. in the

  1453. heart.

  1454. I need

  1455. a new

  1456. heart

  1457. in order

  1458. to see

  1459. all people

  1460. made in

  1461. the image

  1462. of God

  1463. and in

  1464. just as

  1465. much of a

  1466. need of

  1467. God's

  1468. great plan

  1469. of redemption

  1470. through Jesus

  1471. as I

  1472. am.

  1473. racism.

  1474. So as

  1475. we tackle

  1476. this issue

  1477. of racism

  1478. and

  1479. ethnocentricity,

  1480. I think

  1481. it's so

  1482. much more

  1483. essential for

  1484. us to go

  1485. deeper than

  1486. just the

  1487. attitudes and

  1488. the behaviours

  1489. of racism.

  1490. Much of

  1491. the talk

  1492. about racism

  1493. and

  1494. ethnocentricity

  1495. in our

  1496. world at

  1497. the moment

  1498. has to

  1499. do with

  1500. the

  1501. behaviours

  1502. and the

  1503. attitudes,

  1504. but not

  1505. the root

  1506. cause.

  1507. if we

  1508. don't go

  1509. deeper into

  1510. the reason

  1511. why people

  1512. are racist

  1513. and why

  1514. you and

  1515. I are

  1516. therefore,

  1517. then the

  1518. impact of

  1519. that will

  1520. be quite

  1521. simply

  1522. an increase

  1523. in racism,

  1524. an increasing

  1525. prejudice

  1526. and pride.

  1527. it will

  1528. be too

  1529. easy,

  1530. as many

  1531. do in

  1532. the secular

  1533. world,

  1534. to conclude

  1535. that racists

  1536. or those

  1537. who are

  1538. indifferent to

  1539. racism are

  1540. just morally

  1541. inferior.

  1542. There we

  1543. go.

  1544. That's

  1545. making an

  1546. assessment of

  1547. someone else's

  1548. heart.

  1549. And

  1550. therefore,

  1551. if they're

  1552. morally

  1553. inferior,

  1554. they are

  1555. worthy of

  1556. being judged.

  1557. They're

  1558. worthy of

  1559. my prejudice.

  1560. And that

  1561. is incredibly

  1562. dangerous.

  1563. Those who

  1564. denounce

  1565. racism can

  1566. feel morally

  1567. superior and

  1568. lose the

  1569. sense of

  1570. the common

  1571. fall of

  1572. sinfulness.

  1573. The only

  1574. way to

  1575. deal with

  1576. racism and

  1577. prejudice and

  1578. ethnocentricity

  1579. is to see

  1580. all of us as

  1581. complicit in

  1582. it.

  1583. I was

  1584. watching the

  1585. Winter Olympics

  1586. last night.

  1587. Not much

  1588. else on at

  1589. the moment.

  1590. And there

  1591. was one

  1592. event that I

  1593. was watching

  1594. where four

  1595. snowboarders

  1596. race down

  1597. this circuit

  1598. together and

  1599. jump and

  1600. crash and

  1601. all other

  1602. things.

  1603. Really, it was

  1604. very exciting.

  1605. And at the

  1606. start, they're

  1607. lined up behind

  1608. these gates and

  1609. they launch

  1610. themselves off as

  1611. soon as the

  1612. gate falls.

  1613. And immediately

  1614. that happens.

  1615. Up on the

  1616. screen, they've

  1617. got all the

  1618. competitors there.

  1619. up on the

  1620. screen comes

  1621. reaction time.

  1622. How fast they

  1623. reacted to the

  1624. gate dropping.

  1625. Some are

  1626. faster than

  1627. others.

  1628. But they all

  1629. have a reaction

  1630. time.

  1631. They all have a

  1632. reaction time.

  1633. No one's

  1634. standing there

  1635. going, oh,

  1636. gate's gone.

  1637. There we go.

  1638. No one's doing

  1639. that.

  1640. They all have a

  1641. reaction time.

  1642. Some are faster

  1643. than others.

1644. All of us have a

  1645. prejudice in their

  1646. heart.

  1647. It takes just

  1648. seconds for the

  1649. most part for

  1650. that sin to

  1651. rise itself as

  1652. we externally

  1653. assess another

  1654. individual as

  1655. they cross the

  1656. road in front of

  1657. us.

  1658. And we've

  1659. categorized them

  1660. already.

  1661. We see

  1662. something on

  1663. television.

  1664. We see an

  1665. interaction and

  1666. we categorize it

  1667. already of what

  1668. it is.

  1669. Racism is

  1670. just one of

  1671. the poisonous,

  1672. destructive

  1673. manifestations of

  1674. something that

  1675. absolutely every

  1676. single person is

  1677. doing in their

  1678. heart.

1679. All of us have a

  1680. prejudice heart.

  1681. It takes just

  1682. seconds.

  1683. It's so strange

  1684. how we can call

  1685. out structural

  1686. racism but be

  1687. okay with a

  1688. prejudice and a

  1689. resentment that

  1690. lingers in the

  1691. heart towards

  1692. others.

  1693. God's

  1694. God's

  1695. love.

  1696. It's so strange

1697. that we can call it

1698. in the first four or

1699. five of our sermons in

1700. this is to lay out a

  1701. world view.

  1702. eternity according to the

  1703. Bible coming from the

  1704. creator God.

  1705. It begins with the

1706. creation of all things by

  1707. a merciful God including

  1708. making people in his

  1709. image.

  1710. We have sinned against

  1711. him and we have

  1712. marred that image and

1713. we will see in the

  1714. coming weeks that this

  1715. worldview, the God

  1716. himself comes into his

1717. world in the person of

  1718. Jesus Christ to restore

1719. that image, to bring us

1720. back into the fold of

  1721. God's people and we

  1722. will see that God's

  1723. final goal is the

1724. unity of all kinds of

  1725. people from all nations

  1726. and people and

  1727. languages and ethnic

  1728. groups in perfect love

  1729. with one another and

  1730. their God.

  1731. Naked.

  1732. I think we're in heaven

  1733. going to be naked.

  1734. Naked and no shame,

  1735. no judgment, no

  1736. assessment and joy for

  1737. all eternity.

1738. And so many times we

1739. lose sight of that as

  1740. Christians and therefore

  1741. our prejudice lingers on.

  1742. But there's another big

  1743. story running around in

  1744. our culture that

  1745. significantly influences

1746. this issue on racism and

  1747. I think you've got to hear

  1748. about it.

1749. It too is a world view,

  1750. make no mistake.

1751. It wants you, it gives

1752. you a way to read the

  1753. world, to understand the

  1754. world.

1755. It tells you how to live

1756. and how to treat people.

  1757. It's a world view.

  1758. And this particular

  1759. world view, the main

1760. foundation of it is it

  1761. runs from oppression to

  1762. liberation.

1763. And it divides the world

  1764. into two main categories.

1765. All people are either in

  1766. the dominant group that

  1767. oppresses or the

  1768. marginalized group of the

  1769. oppressed.

1770. Breaks the world up like

  1771. that.

  1772. And as such,

1773. its goal is that we

  1774. either need to divest

  1775. ourselves of power to

  1776. seek the liberation of

1777. others or we need to

  1778. acquire power personally

  1779. and liberate ourselves

1780. and to do that primarily

  1781. by dismantling all social

  1782. structures and institutions

  1783. that we think oppress.

  1784. Others, scholars in the

  1785. Western world have called

  1786. it cultural Marxism,

  1787. another version of it.

1788. Where we wipe out any

  1789. other alternative view.

  1790. It's called critical

1791. theory and its subset in the

1792. issue of race is critical

  1793. race theory.

1794. And we are exposed to it in

1795. a secular world like ours

1796. even if we don't know the

  1797. titles and the names

  1798. associated with it.

  1799. It separates the world

1800. into those who should be

1801. ashamed of their race and

1802. culture even if you're not

  1803. complicit in directly doing

  1804. involved in it.

1805. You should be ashamed of

  1806. yourself just purely because

  1807. you're white.

1808. That in itself is racism.

1809. And those, on the other hand,

  1810. who are therefore justified

  1811. in their racism and

  1812. ethnocentricity as they seek

  1813. personal liberation and the

  1814. liberation of their group.

  1815. That view, critical race

  1816. theory, is becoming dominant

  1817. in the Western world.

1818. And it's connected to all

1819. sorts of issues to do with

1820. sexual ethics and gender and

  1821. other things like that.

1822. And I have to ask the

1823. question because I see it on

  1824. Facebook.

  1825. Incredibly, those who are

  1826. committed to critical race

  1827. theory, how

  1828. prejudiced they are

1829. towards anyone who does not

  1830. agree to them.

1831. How on earth does that bring

1832. an end to racism when

  1833. prejudice against another

1834. individual is okay if I've

1835. categorised them as part of a

  1836. majority group?

1837. Now, this series is not about

  1838. politics.

1839. This series is about checking

  1840. your sinful prejudice

  1841. heart.

1842. If we're going to be a church

1843. that is aligned with God's

1844. mission, his vision, his goal

1845. to bring all people into his

1846. kingdom forever in joy, united

1847. in Christ, then racial pride and

  1848. ethnocentricity must end.

1849. And it ends when the gospel

  1850. breaks my heart.

  1851. Thank you.

  1852. Thank you.
