  1. What am I doing and what is the point?

  2. This is a question asked by many people,

  3. including in an article in the Sydney Morning Herald last Sunday.

  4. Author Lisa Leong told a story about a musician friend of hers

  5. who, in the first lockdown, had lost her job.

  6. She was a musician and her job wasn't considered essential.

  7. It made her feel devalued when she lost her job.

  8. And the author reflected that our sense of self

  9. is often wrapped up in our identity.

  10. And so when we lose a job, we can feel devalued.

  11. And she suggested that the biggest blow to losing a job

  12. is not just dollars, but the hit our identity can take.

  13. She suggested that it's because our identity gives us meaning

  14. and purpose in life.

  15. And I think she's hit onto something there.

  16. She's come from outside Christianity,

  17. but I think she's hit onto something quite interesting there.

  18. Our identity gives us meaning and purpose.

  19. Have you ever felt devalued?

  20. Have you ever questioned, what am I doing?

  21. What is the point?

  22. What is the purpose of my life?

  23. Maybe you felt like that musician who looked at the things that she did,

  24. the fact that she could no longer do what she thought gave her purpose,

  25. and she felt like she had no purpose.

  26. Have you ever felt like, you're just questioning,

  27. what am I doing?

  28. Because when we have these things taken away,

  29. we can feel like a leaf adrift in a river.

  30. I'm sure that there's at least one person here in the building

  31. or watching at home online

  32. who maybe has lied awake late at night thinking,

  33. what is the point?

  34. What am I doing?

  35. God, what is my purpose?

  36. What do you want me to be doing with my life?

  37. And that is the challenge set before us today.

  38. Just a small question

  39. to dive into some of life's deepest questions.

  40. Who am I?

  41. And what am I here for?

  42. We are in our vision series as a church,

  43. a time where we refocus as a church

  44. about the direction we're going in.

  45. And we've been looking over the last three weeks

  46. to see who we as a church are to be,

  47. particularly within a culture

  48. that is battling racism amongst other challenges.

  49. And this week we are changing tack slightly

  50. from thinking about us as a church

  51. to thinking about us as individuals

  52. who make up the broader church.

  53. And so as we seek to answer those two questions today,

  54. who am I and what am I here for?

  55. Let me pray.

  56. Heavenly Father,

  57. as we come to your word,

  58. give us insight,

  59. not only into who you are and into your word,

  60. but who you have made us to be.

  61. And give me your words to speak today, Lord.

  62. Amen.

  63. Three points for us this morning.

  64. Made,

  65. ruined,

  66. and remade.

  67. Let me encourage you to be using the St. Paul's app

  68. to be following along as well.

  69. First of all,

  70. we're starting in Psalm 8

  71. to see how we are made.

  72. And as John read for us,

  73. this is a wonderful meditation

  74. from King David

  75. about who he is

  76. and about who our God is.

  77. So have a look with me,

  78. Psalm 8.

  79. That'll come up on the screen as well,

  80. starting in verse 1.

  81. And it starts off with David praising God.

  82. Lord, our Lord,

  83. how majestic is your name in all the earth.

  84. You have set your glory in the heavens.

  85. And I wonder where David is

  86. as he's saying this.

  87. Is he outside

  88. looking up at the sky,

  89. staring at the vast sky?

  90. Is he in the middle of nature?

  91. I think even those who don't believe in God,

  92. sometimes when we're confronted

  93. by just the vastness of creation,

  94. makes us stop and think,

  95. wow,

  96. there must be something bigger.

  97. There must be something beyond me.

  98. And David in this scene

  99. is just reflecting on God's awesomeness

  100. and his glory.

  101. God is so vast

  102. and so beyond us

  103. that he even uses the unlikely

  104. for his own glory.

  105. Verse 2.

  106. Through the praise of infants

  107. and children,

  108. you have established

  109. a stronghold against your enemies

  110. to silence the foe and the avenger.

  111. You don't see too many countries

  112. assembling armies

  113. out of infants and children.

  114. But God can silence the strong

  115. with the very weak

  116. because God is just that powerful.

  117. And David continues

  118. considering God in verse 3.

  119. When I consider your heavens

  120. the work of your fingers,

  121. the moon and the stars

  122. which you have set in place,

  123. it makes him consider who he is.

  124. But this is actually

  125. quite amazing as well.

  126. It tells us

  127. something about God.

  128. David could have said that

  129. God made the world

  130. with his mighty arm,

  131. with an outstretched arm,

  132. with a powerful arm.

  133. But David said that

  134. God made the world

  135. with his fingers.

  136. God is intimately involved

  137. with his creation.

  138. It's almost like

  139. a picture of God.

  140. I've painted a lot

  141. of little figurines.

  142. It's this picture of God

  143. intricately making us

  144. with his fingers.

  145. That the God

  146. who is bigger than galaxies

  147. beyond time and space

  148. works with delicate intricacy,

  149. like an artist,

  150. a model builder.

  151. Steve, in the last couple of weeks,

  152. has looked at Genesis 1 and 2.

  153. And that's what David

  154. is doing here.

  155. He's recalling creation.

  156. He's looking at the vastness

  157. of creation,

  158. the goodness of God,

  159. and it brings him to think

  160. about himself

  161. in verse 4.

  162. What is mankind

  163. that you are mindful of them?

  164. Human beings

  165. that you would care for them.

  166. God, what am I?

  167. Because in the vastness

  168. of all these things

  169. you've created,

  170. I am an insignificant

  171. little dot.

  172. What am I

  173. that you would think of me?

  174. That God,

  175. your mind would be on me.

  176. Why would I be in your heart?

  177. Why would you care for me?

  178. David answers this

  179. in verse 5.

  180. You have made them

  181. a little lower

  182. than the angels,

  183. and you've crowned them

  184. with glory and honor.

  185. This answers the question

  186. of who are we?

  187. We are people

  188. intimately made.

  189. We are people

  190. who are known by God,

  191. who God chooses

  192. to know and love.

  193. God chooses

  194. to honor us.

  195. He crowns us

  196. with glory and honor.

  197. We are a people

  198. that God has made

  199. and he makes much of.

  200. God made a people

  201. in his image.

  202. We're recalling

  203. Genesis 1 and 2

  204. where God made us

  205. in his image.

  206. This is primary.

  207. This is really central.

  208. This is core

  209. to us as people,

  210. to us as Christians.

  211. We are people

  212. made in God's image.

  213. So,

  214. when someone asks,

  215. oh,

  216. hi,

  217. I'm James.

  218. Who are you?

  219. You know,

  220. we should be saying,

  221. before we say,

  222. I'm employed in this field

  223. or this is some things

  224. about me,

  225. the answer really should be,

  226. oh,

  227. I'm a child of God.

  228. Before I knew

  229. what to do in my life,

  230. God crowned me

  231. with his glory

  232. and his honor.

  233. He made me his child.

  234. That might make things

  235. a little bit awkward

  236. in social settings,

  237. but it is true.

  238. God

  239. has made us

  240. in his image

  241. like him

  242. before we knew

  243. anything about ourselves.

  244. I found it really difficult

  245. in the last week

  246. to see what's been happening

  247. in the Ukraine.

  248. I'm not sure

  249. if you've been following

  250. what's been happening,

  251. but one thing

  252. that has been encouraging

  253. is seeing

  254. the Christians

  255. continue

  256. to praise God

  257. in that season.

  258. There's a video of them,

  259. I think they were

  260. in a train station,

  261. there's this group

  262. of Christians

  263. just praising God.

  264. And one of the things

  265. that they have said

  266. is even

  267. with oppression coming,

  268. we will not hide

  269. who we are

  270. if we need to go

  271. underground as the church.

  272. We will do that,

  273. we've done that before,

  274. and we will do that again

  275. if they need.

  276. And they're able

  277. to say that

  278. because they know

  279. what is core

  280. to who they are

  281. as people.

  282. It is their Christian

  283. identity.

  284. And even with

  285. opposition coming,

  286. that's not going

  287. to make them hide

  288. or run away

  289. from who they are

  290. as people,

  291. they're going

  292. to go,

  293. we will continue

  294. as Christians

  295. even in the face

  296. of opposition.

  297. David finishes

  298. with the same words

  299. as he started

  300. in verse 9.

  301. Lord,

  302. our Lord,

  303. how majestic

  304. is your name

  305. in all the earth.

  306. You have set

  307. your glory

  308. in the heavens.

  309. So in the midst

  310. of David meditating

  311. on who he is,

  312. made in the image

  313. of God,

  314. it's all framed

  315. in praising God.

  316. Paul says

  317. in 1 Corinthians 10,

  318. whether you eat

  319. or drink

  320. or whatever you do,

  321. do it all

  322. for the glory

  323. of God.

  324. And this is the theme

  325. of our series.

  326. It's all of life.

  327. That we are to be

  328. Christians all of life.

  329. That we are to bring

  330. praise and glory

  331. to God

  332. all of life.

  333. Not just for an hour

  334. or two on a Sunday.

  335. Not just for a couple

  336. of minutes

  337. when we're reading

  338. the Bible.

  339. But we are to be

  340. following God

  341. all of life

  342. because we are made

  343. in his image.

  344. We are to be doing

  345. what Paul said

  346. in 1 Corinthians

  347. said,

  348. to be bringing him

  349. glory.

  350. This is the

  351. biblical picture

  352. of who we are

  353. and what we are

  354. to do.

  355. We are to be,

  356. we are made

  357. in God's image

  358. and we are to be

  359. bringing him glory.

  360. Our purpose

  361. is to magnify him.

  362. To bring him glory.

  363. to show how awesome

  364. he really is.

  365. To his praise

  366. and to enjoy

  367. relationship with him.

  368. On the one hand,

  369. it makes a lot of sense.

  370. The Bible presents

  371. a pretty clear picture.

  372. We are made

  373. in God's image

  374. and we are made

  375. to glory,

  376. to bring him glory

  377. and to enjoy him.

  378. But on the other hand,

  379. it's really hard.

  380. We still have this

  381. existential angst

  382. that comes from

  383. questioning,

  384. well,

  385. what am I to do?

  386. Who am I to be?

  387. And this comes

  388. because

  389. our image

  390. has been marred.

  391. It's been damaged.

  392. It's been ruined.

  393. And that's our

  394. second point today.

  395. The problem comes

  396. from the fall

  397. where the image

  398. of God was damaged.

  399. It was messed up.

  400. Our purpose in life

  401. got confused.

  402. Instead of glorifying God,

  403. we pursue ourselves

  404. and the other

  405. idols of life

  406. that we make.

  407. The article

  408. talking about

  409. identity from last week

  410. in the City Morning Herald,

  411. it concluded

  412. with some fairly

  413. depressing words.

  414. It said,

  415. everything matters

  416. and nothing matters.

  417. It's messy

  418. and hard to define,

  419. but it's like standing

  420. on top of a mountain

  421. and feeling huge

  422. and small

  423. all at once.

  424. This is a wonderful

  425. paradox to hold

  426. within our every experience.

  427. What a beautiful

  428. perspective to carry

  429. through the world.

  430. What you do matters,

  431. but not as much

  432. as who you are.

  433. They both matter,

  434. but also

  435. not at all.

  436. It's so similar

  437. to David's experience

  438. in Psalm 8.

  439. He's standing

  440. and beholding

  441. the awesomeness

  442. of God,

  443. but this author

  444. suggests

  445. that,

  446. you know,

  447. experiencing

  448. how large

  449. and how small

  450. the reality is

  451. that,

  452. you know what,

  453. it's actually

  454. all meaningless.

  455. It's all pointless.

  456. You can give yourself

  457. meaning if you like,

  458. but actually

  459. there is no meaning

  460. to life.

  461. And if we follow

  462. this directionless

  463. questioning,

  464. we just end up

  465. purposeless,

  466. hopeless.

  467. Nothing matters,

  468. but you can pretend

  469. it like it does

  470. if you like.

  471. until your deathbed

  472. and you'll think,

  473. what's it all been for?

  474. But when we take

  475. God out of the picture,

  476. that's what we're

  477. left with.

  478. Self-invented purpose

  479. that doesn't satisfy.

  480. We can create

  481. an identity

  482. that can be

  483. lost or broken

  484. with a pandemic

  485. coming through

  486. and a job lost.

  487. Paul says in Romans 1,

  488. for although they knew

  489. God,

  490. they neither glorified

  491. Him as God

  492. nor gave thanks to Him.

  493. But their thinking

  494. became futile

  495. and foolish,

  496. and their foolish

  497. hearts were darkened.

  498. Although they claimed

  499. to be wise,

  500. they became fools

  501. and exchanged

  502. the glory of the

  503. immortal God

  504. for images

  505. made to look like

  506. a mortal human being

  507. and birds and animals

  508. and reptiles.

  509. We have been made

  510. in the image of God

  511. to bring Him glory,

  512. but the image of God

  513. has been marred

  514. by our sin,

  515. it's been damaged,

  516. and so we chase

  517. other things.

  518. We choose to give

  519. them glory instead.

  520. And when we don't know

  521. who we are in God,

  522. we lose our purpose.

  523. And instead,

  524. it gets redefined for us.

  525. Instead,

  526. we get a different identity

  527. and we end up

  528. with a different purpose.

  529. And instead of it being

  530. shaped by God,

  531. it's shaped by

  532. the culture

  533. around us.

  534. What my purpose is

  535. gets shaped by

  536. my culture around me.

  537. It gets shaped

  538. by aspects of me.

  539. It gets shaped by

  540. what I do for work,

  541. my sexuality,

  542. the things I do,

  543. my role within my family.

  544. It's going to be influenced

  545. differently

  546. in different cultures.

  547. But every culture,

  548. every culture

  549. is not based

  550. on God.

  551. And so every culture

  552. is going to make

  553. a different idol.

  554. It's going to make

  555. our identity,

  556. which might be

  557. something good,

  558. like work,

  559. it's going to take

  560. something good

  561. and make it

  562. the ultimate thing

  563. and an idol.

  564. And it's going to make

  565. it the most important

  566. thing in our life.

  567. The image of God

  568. is marred

  569. and so our purpose

  570. gets confused.

  571. I think in the West,

  572. it looks like

  573. the personal pursuit

  574. of happiness,

  575. the pursuit

  576. of personal happiness.

  577. It's the big dream.

  578. It's the goal.

  579. It's the vision

  580. of personal success.

  581. I'm going to have

  582. a vision board.

  583. Well, there was a book

  584. that came out

  585. a number of years ago

  586. called The Secret.

  587. Not sure if you've heard

  588. of The Secret.

  589. It was on Oprah

  590. at the time.

  591. It was all about

  592. envisioning

  593. what your success

  594. looked like.

  595. And so you'd think

  596. about it.

  597. And because you're

  598. thinking about it,

  599. the universe was going

  600. to give it to you.

  601. And this was the thinking.

  602. In the West,

  603. it really is about

  604. personal success.

  605. I've seen this

  606. impact my own heart.

  607. I've seen this impact

  608. other people

  609. in my line of work

  610. as pastors.

  611. In church ministry,

  612. we're in a culture

  613. which is about

  614. growth and success

  615. generally.

  616. You know,

  617. you look at companies,

  618. they must always

  619. have year-on-year growth.

  620. There can be no

  621. staying the same.

  622. We must always

  623. grow and succeed.

  624. And it can be

  625. the same in the church

  626. because growth

  627. is,

  628. and bigger numbers

  629. is a sign of success.

  630. And so,

  631. I talk to other ministers

  632. and the same comment,

  633. the same question

  634. comes up.

  635. Oh,

  636. how big is your church?

  637. How is it growing?

  638. And I see the challenge

  639. in my own heart

  640. to be influenced

  641. by what our culture

  642. defines success as.

  643. But that's not biblical.

  644. It's a culturally

  645. driven purpose.

  646. From an Eastern perspective,

  647. identity and purpose

  648. might not look like

  649. individual success,

  650. but it might look like

  651. having success

  652. to care for a family

  653. or having success

  654. academically

  655. on behalf of other people

  656. so that others

  657. in the family

  658. can boast

  659. about how their family

  660. is doing.

  661. It doesn't matter

  662. the ethnic background

  663. that we come from,

  664. they are all

  665. adrift from God

  666. and we are all

  667. going to find

  668. an identity

  669. and purpose

  670. away from God.

  671. It's going to make

  672. us look successful

  673. and desire to have

  674. those around us

  675. look successful too.

  676. A culture that says

  677. to be successful

  678. you must earn

  679. a lot of money,

  680. you must be busy,

  681. it's no wonder

  682. that our identity

  683. becomes so closely

  684. tied to our jobs,

  685. to the things we do.

  686. It shapes our days

  687. and so very often

  688. it gives us purpose.

  689. But it's also true

  690. that we want to do

  691. valuable things.

  692. I know over the last

  693. couple of weeks

  694. it's been wonderful

  695. to hear from people

  696. like Soren

  697. who's a solicitor

  698. about how

  699. he does his

  700. nine to five

  701. to help people,

  702. to care for other people

  703. and this is good.

  704. The challenge is

  705. when it becomes

  706. ultimate,

  707. when it becomes

  708. no, no, no,

  709. this is who I am,

  710. I am the teacher

  711. and this is all

  712. about my life.

  713. But that's not

  714. who we are.

  715. If something

  716. core to our identity

  717. can be so easily

  718. taken away

  719. by a pandemic

  720. or by a job loss,

  721. then it isn't

  722. really core

  723. to who we are.

  724. First,

  725. we are Christians

  726. and then that

  727. shapes our purpose.

  728. Otherwise,

  729. we'll have a

  730. short-term purpose

  731. and we can be

  732. left feeling

  733. like life

  734. is meaningless.

  735. I like to think

  736. about this

  737. as

  738. a fast-food

  739. identity

  740. version

  741. of identity

  742. and purpose.

  743. We can think

  744. that

  745. having

  746. all purpose

  747. in my job

  748. will satisfy

  749. but it can

  750. ultimately

  751. leave us

  752. feeling empty.

  753. I have a

  754. cheeseburger here.

  755. I don't know

  756. if anybody

  757. likes cheeseburgers.

  758. Does anybody

  759. like eating

  760. cheeseburgers?

  761. This is a

  762. Macca's cheeseburger

  763. and it's being

  764. kept warm

  765. in my pocket

  766. for about

  767. an hour and a half.

  768. I'll tell you

  769. what,

  770. even warm,

  771. it's still

  772. delicious.

  773. Steve's looking

  774. at me right

  775. now,

  776. he's thinking

  777. that's going

  778. to spike

  779. your sugars.

  780. That combination

  781. of carbs

  782. and sugars

  783. and fat

  784. and protein,

  785. it tastes

  786. good.

  787. Does anybody

  788. want some?

  789. No?

  790. Okay.

  791. It tastes

  792. good

  793. but soon,

  794. let me just

  795. finish my

  796. mouthful.

  797. Excuse me,

  798. my mouth is

  799. dry.

  800. Should have

  801. gotten a

  802. Coke.

  803. Soon my

  804. system is

  805. going to

  806. go into

  807. overdrive

  808. from this

  809. combination of

  810. fats and

  811. sugars.

  812. And I'm

  813. going to

  814. crash soon.

  815. You'll see me

  816. on the floor

  817. in the last

  818. song.

  819. I'm not sure

  820. how you feel

  821. after you

  822. eat fast

  823. food,

  824. but often

  825. can feel

  826. just a little

  827. bit sick.

  828. It can

  829. often leave

  830. me feeling

  831. just a little

  832. bit unsatisfied,

  833. like I need

  834. a real meal.

  835. food.

  836. It leaves

  837. me craving

  838. a meal

  839. with real

  840. food and

  841. family and

  842. friends.

  843. That satisfies

  844. not just the

  845. taste buds,

  846. not only does

  847. it not make me

  848. feel sick,

  849. but it feeds

  850. my soul.

  851. Imagine if I

  852. only ever

  853. ate Maccas.

  854. You'd be

  855. concerned for

  856. me, yes?

  857. My life would

  858. not go very

  859. well for very

  860. long.

  861. I might enjoy

  862. it to a

  863. certain extent.

  864. I think

  865. that is a

  866. temptation on

  867. how we

  868. approach the

  869. question of

  870. who I am

  871. and what my

  872. purpose is.

  873. We seek

  874. fulfillment and

  875. purpose in

  876. things that are

  877. only temporary

  878. and ultimately

  879. things that

  880. don't actually

  881. satisfy.

  882. But we don't

  883. even realize

  884. that they

  885. won't satisfy.

  886. Instead of

  887. understanding how

  888. God has

  889. intricately and

  890. lovingly made

  891. us in his

  892. image, we

  893. take something

  894. off the

  895. shelf of

  896. identity and

  897. purpose and

  898. think, I'll

  899. have that.

  900. I'll devote

  901. myself to

  902. that.

  903. I'll devote

  904. myself to

  905. this career.

  906. I'll devote

  907. myself to

  908. fixing the

  909. world in

  910. this way.

  911. I study

  912. law.

  913. I'm a

  914. solicitor.

  915. I'm going

  916. to devote

  917. everything to

  918. that.

  919. I'm a

  920. teacher.

  921. I'm going

  922. to fix a

  923. generation of

  924. kids.

  925. And these

  926. are good

  927. things.

  928. But when

  929. they are made

  930. the ultimate

  931. things, it

  932. shapes what

  933. we do

  934. each day.

  935. It shapes

  936. how we

  937. want to

  938. get glory

  939. for

  940. ourselves.

  941. It shapes

  942. our purpose

  943. in life.

  944. But like a

  945. cheeseburger,

  946. they are not

  947. ultimate things.

  948. They will just

  949. leave us

  950. feeling unsatisfied.

  951. We can end up

  952. with that question

  953. before.

  954. Is that it?

  955. Is that all

  956. my life?

  957. What happens

  958. when my job

  959. ends?

  960. What happens

  961. when I hit

  962. retirement?

  963. I'll have an

  964. existential crisis.

  965. God offers

  966. us something

  967. far deeper,

  968. far more

  969. satisfying.

  970. One that only

  971. comes from

  972. him.

  973. Now, don't

  974. hear me say

  975. we shouldn't

  976. pursue work,

  977. we shouldn't

  978. pursue significant

  979. things.

  980. Work is a

  981. good gift

  982. given from

  983. God.

  984. But one

  985. way to

  986. figure out

  987. whether a

  988. good gift

  989. from God

  990. has become

  991. an idol

  992. is to

  993. question what

  994. would happen

  995. if we

  996. didn't have

  997. it.

  998. Tim Keller

  999. asked a

  1000. question to

  1001. help us

  1002. identify

  1003. our idol,

  1004. which is

  1005. what do

  1006. we go to

  1007. bed thinking

  1008. about?

  1009. What is our

  1010. goal?

  1011. What is our

  1012. dream?

  1013. Before we

  1014. drift off to

  1015. sleep,

  1016. what are we

  1017. thinking,

  1018. I really

  1019. want that?

  1020. What would

  1021. happen if

  1022. we couldn't

  1023. get it?

  1024. Now, I know

  1025. there's a

  1026. number of

  1027. teachers in

  1028. the room,

  1029. so let me

  1030. use a

  1031. teacher example.

  1032. Let's say

  1033. you're a

  1034. teacher and

  1035. your dream

  1036. is to be

  1037. the principal.

  1038. I hear

  1039. that's a

  1040. good thing.

  1041. And that's

  1042. your goal and

  1043. you think,

  1044. I can lead

  1045. a school

  1046. really well,

  1047. I can change

  1048. culture,

  1049. I can shape

  1050. a generation,

  1051. and you

  1052. apply for a

  1053. job and

  1054. it's your

  1055. dream job and

  1056. you think you

  1057. would be the

  1058. best at it,

  1059. and then you

  1060. get knocked

  1061. back.

  1062. You don't

  1063. get it.

  1064. And there's

  1065. sadness and

  1066. pain, but

  1067. is there

  1068. anger or

  1069. righteous

  1070. indignation?

  1071. I deserve

  1072. that.

  1073. That should

  1074. have been

  1075. my job.

  1076. If we

  1077. have those

  1078. kinds of

  1079. responses,

  1080. it indicates

  1081. that that

  1082. might actually

  1083. be an

  1084. idol,

  1085. that might

  1086. actually be

  1087. the thing

  1088. we are

  1089. attaching our

  1090. purpose and

  1091. our identity

  1092. to,

  1093. because if we

  1094. don't get

  1095. it, there

  1096. is pain.

  1097. Are you

  1098. satisfied and

  1099. able to

  1100. glorify God

  1101. where you

  1102. are?

  1103. If you were

  1104. to stay in

  1105. the same

  1106. house, in

  1107. the same

  1108. job, with

  1109. the same

  1110. amount of

  1111. money, with

  1112. the same

  1113. situation in

  1114. your life, if

  1115. you didn't

  1116. get that

  1117. goal that

  1118. you have.

  1119. So what

  1120. do we do?

  1121. Third point

  1122. today is

  1123. that we

  1124. are remade.

  1125. If our

  1126. image of

  1127. God has

  1128. been marred

  1129. by our

  1130. sin, and

  1131. we are

  1132. off pursuing

  1133. new things

  1134. that don't

  1135. ultimately

  1136. satisfy it,

  1137. what now?

  1138. In

  1139. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1140. chapter 1,

  1141. it describes

  1142. Jesus as

  1143. the image

  1144. of the

  1145. invisible

  1146. God,

  1147. firstborn

  1148. over all

  1149. creation,

  1150. and in

  1151. him we

  1152. are remade.

  1153. Our

  1154. likeness is

  1155. given back

  1156. to, the

  1157. image of

  1158. God is

  1159. remade for

  1160. us.

  1161. He has

  1162. come to

  1163. restore us

  1164. to God's

  1165. image.

  1166. Jesus

  1167. perfectly

  1168. reflects

  1169. God.

  1170. The rest

  1171. of Psalm

  1172. 8 that we

  1173. were looking

  1174. at before

  1175. is a

  1176. picture of

  1177. what happens

  1178. after Jesus

  1179. dies and

  1180. is raised

  1181. back to

  1182. life.

  1183. David is

  1184. talking about

  1185. himself, but

  1186. he's actually

  1187. talking about

  1188. Jesus.

  1189. From verse

  1190. 4 of Psalm

  1191. 8,

  1192. hopefully

  1193. it'll be

  1194. on the

  1195. screen.

  1196. What is

  1197. mankind

  1198. that you

  1199. are mindful

  1200. of them?

  1201. Human

  1202. beings or

  1203. the son

  1204. of man

  1205. that you

  1206. care for

  1207. them?

  1208. You have

  1209. made them

  1210. a little

  1211. lower than

  1212. the angels

  1213. and crowned

  1214. them with

  1215. glory and

  1216. honor.

  1217. You made

  1218. them rulers

  1219. over the

  1220. works of

  1221. your hands.

  1222. You put

  1223. everything

  1224. under their

  1225. feet.

  1226. Jesus

  1227. is the

  1228. perfect

  1229. man.

  1230. He is

  1231. the perfect

  1232. image

  1233. bearer of

  1234. God.

  1235. He is

  1236. the one

  1237. who restores

  1238. us to

  1239. God's

  1240. image.

  1241. And as

  1242. Psalm 8

  1243. says,

  1244. he was

  1245. crowned

  1246. with glory.

  1247. Everything

  1248. has been

  1249. placed under

  1250. his feet.

  1251. And now,

  1252. believing in

  1253. Jesus,

  1254. by the power

  1255. of God's

  1256. Holy Spirit,

  1257. we are being

  1258. remade in

  1259. the image

  1260. of God.

  1261. Romans 8

  1262. says,

  1263. for those

  1264. God

  1265. foreknew,

  1266. he also

  1267. predestined

  1268. to be

  1269. conformed

  1270. to the

  1271. image of

  1272. his Son.

  1273. Every day,

  1274. God is

  1275. making us

  1276. to be

  1277. who we

  1278. were made

  1279. to be.

  1280. In the

  1281. power of

  1282. the Holy

  1283. Spirit,

  1284. he is

  1285. conforming

  1286. us back

  1287. to the

  1288. image of

  1289. who we

  1290. are.

  1291. He has

  1292. restored

  1293. our identity

  1294. as his

  1295. children,

  1296. so we can

  1297. be called

  1298. Christian,

  1299. and now

  1300. he's

  1301. restoring us

  1302. to his

  1303. purpose,

  1304. to glorify

  1305. him.

  1306. But it's

  1307. hard.

  1308. It's a

  1309. challenge.

  1310. It's hard

  1311. to take

  1312. off that

  1313. identity,

  1314. the goal,

  1315. that dream

  1316. that our

  1317. culture can

  1318. give us,

  1319. and the

  1320. dream to

  1321. have success,

  1322. and realign

  1323. it with

  1324. God's purpose

  1325. of giving

  1326. him the

  1327. glory,

  1328. because he

  1329. is the

  1330. one who

  1331. has all

  1332. success.

  1333. He is

  1334. the one

  1335. who is

  1336. in control

  1337. of all

  1338. things.

  1339. So who

  1340. are we,

  1341. brothers and

  1342. sisters?

  1343. God has

  1344. bought our

  1345. identity,

  1346. which was

  1347. marred at

  1348. the fall

  1349. with the

  1350. blood of

  1351. his son,

  1352. so that

  1353. we might

  1354. be his

  1355. people.

  1356. So that

  1357. whatever role

  1358. we do,

  1359. whatever we

  1360. do in our

  1361. nine to

  1362. five,

  1363. we are his

  1364. children first,

  1365. made in his

  1366. image to

  1367. glorify him.

  1368. How then,

  1369. how can we

  1370. live our life

  1371. for the glory

  1372. of God?

  1373. How can we

  1374. magnify God

  1375. in all we do?

  1376. How do we

  1377. pursue his

  1378. glory,

  1379. regardless of

  1380. what we are

  1381. doing in

  1382. life?

  1383. After that

  1384. cheeseburger,

  1385. I need a bit

  1386. of a drink,

  1387. so I'm

  1388. going to

  1389. help illustrate

  1390. this with

  1391. an illustration

  1392. from John

  1393. Piper about

  1394. orange juice,

  1395. but I don't

  1396. have orange

  1397. juice,

  1398. I have

  1399. some black

  1400. currant

  1401. juice,

  1402. which we'll

  1403. do.

  1404. Firstly,

  1405. this black

  1406. currant

  1407. juice is

  1408. just an

  1409. illustration

  1410. of what

  1411. we can

  1412. do in

  1413. all of

  1414. life.

  1415. John

  1416. Piper

  1417. encourages

  1418. us to

  1419. glorify

  1420. God in

  1421. every moment,

  1422. as 1

  1423. Corinthians

  1424. calls us

  1425. to do,

  1426. and we

  1427. can do

  1428. that simply

  1429. with a

  1430. moment like

  1431. drinking

  1432. juice.

  1433. First,

  1434. I don't

  1435. deserve this

  1436. juice.

  1437. The reality

  1438. is that

  1439. because of

  1440. my own

  1441. sin,

  1442. I deserve

  1443. punishment,

  1444. I deserve

  1445. hell right

  1446. now.

  1447. And so

  1448. even holding

  1449. this plastic

  1450. cup, I

  1451. can give

  1452. thanks to

  1453. God that

  1454. he has

  1455. forgiven

  1456. my sin.

  1457. And the

  1458. pleasure of

  1459. drinking juice

  1460. is bought

  1461. for me by

  1462. Jesus' death

  1463. on the

  1464. cross, so

  1465. that I can

  1466. enjoy every

  1467. minute of

  1468. my day and

  1469. the minute

  1470. when I drink

  1471. some juice.

  1472. I don't

  1473. deserve it.

  1474. Drinking

  1475. this juice

  1476. actually reveals

  1477. something about

  1478. the goodness

  1479. of God.

  1480. God is a

  1481. creative God

  1482. who enjoys

  1483. pleasurable

  1484. things.

  1485. And God

  1486. made us to

  1487. be able to

  1488. enjoy his

  1489. world.

  1490. This tastes

  1491. good because

  1492. God has

  1493. made us in

  1494. a way to

  1495. be able to

  1496. enjoy things

  1497. that taste

  1498. good.

  1499. And that's

  1500. wonderful that

  1501. our God has

  1502. given that to

  1503. us.

  1504. Thirdly,

  1505. the fact that

  1506. I can even

  1507. stand up here

  1508. and hold this

  1509. cup means

  1510. that God has

  1511. given me

  1512. health.

  1513. He's blessed

  1514. me with health

  1515. to work,

  1516. health to

  1517. earn money

  1518. so I can

  1519. afford juice.

  1520. Even when

  1521. I have fully

  1522. drunk this

  1523. cup and

  1524. all of the

  1525. value of the

  1526. vitamin C has

  1527. gone through

  1528. my body and

  1529. I've gotten

  1530. everything out

  1531. of it,

  1532. even after

  1533. it's finished,

  1534. God is still

  1535. good to me

  1536. and he is

  1537. still helping

  1538. me and he is

  1539. still the

  1540. great healer.

  1541. And lastly,

  1542. I don't pursue

  1543. the black

  1544. currant juice.

  1545. I don't

  1546. make it the

  1547. purpose of

  1548. my life,

  1549. I don't

  1550. worship it,

  1551. I don't

  1552. become the

  1553. black currant

  1554. juice guy

  1555. who's always

  1556. talking to

  1557. you about

  1558. it and

  1559. encouraging

  1560. you,

  1561. you really

  1562. should buy

  1563. more black

  1564. currant

  1565. juice,

  1566. it is really

  1567. the best

  1568. of the

  1569. juices.

  1570. I also

  1571. don't believe

  1572. that,

  1573. but I'm

  1574. thankful for

  1575. it but I

  1576. still pursue

  1577. the one who

  1578. has given

  1579. me the gift.

  1580. Now if I

  1581. can do that

  1582. with a cup

  1583. of black

  1584. currant

  1585. juice,

  1586. how much

  1587. can we do

  1588. that with

  1589. every moment

  1590. of our day?

  1591. The moment

  1592. we wake up

  1593. early,

  1594. the moment

  1595. I got

  1596. woken up

  1597. early this

  1598. morning because

  1599. of my

  1600. kids,

  1601. I can

  1602. thank God

  1603. that I

  1604. have my

  1605. kids,

  1606. that I'm

  1607. well enough

  1608. to play

  1609. with them,

  1610. I can

  1611. thank God

  1612. that I

  1613. can go

  1614. to work,

  1615. I can

  1616. thank God

  1617. for coffee

  1618. and I

  1619. can thank

  1620. God

  1621. multiple

  1622. times

  1623. throughout

  1624. the day

  1625. for coffee

  1626. because I

  1627. drink

  1628. multiple

  1629. coffees.

  1630. Brothers

  1631. and sisters,

  1632. we have a

  1633. good God

  1634. who restores

  1635. us to

  1636. his image

  1637. and to

  1638. his purposes

  1639. and that

  1640. purpose of

  1641. glorifying

  1642. him and

  1643. enjoying

  1644. him.

  1645. He

  1646. offers us

  1647. an identity

  1648. and a

  1649. purpose that

  1650. is far

  1651. better than

  1652. the unsatisfying

  1653. ones that

  1654. we have

  1655. been,

  1656. that we've

  1657. chosen.

  1658. Let me

  1659. encourage you,

  1660. spend a moment

  1661. to think what

  1662. is the purpose

  1663. that you were

  1664. thinking about as

  1665. you drift off to

  1666. sleep?

  1667. Because God

  1668. offers us

  1669. something far

  1670. better,

  1671. made in his

  1672. image,

  1673. with the purpose

  1674. of glorifying

  1675. him.

  1676. let me

  1677. pray.

  1678. Heavenly

  1679. Father,

  1680. I thank you

  1681. so much

  1682. that we

  1683. were made

  1684. in your

  1685. image,

  1686. that even

  1687. though we

  1688. sin against

  1689. you,

  1690. you have

  1691. remade us

  1692. through the

  1693. death and

  1694. resurrection of

  1695. your Son,

  1696. and you are

  1697. making us

  1698. like you

  1699. each day.

  1700. Father,

  1701. help us

  1702. to pursue

  1703. you,

  1704. to desire

  1705. to see you

  1706. glorified,

  1707. and not

  1708. our own

  1709. glory.

  1710. Help us

  1711. not to

  1712. seek our

  1713. success,

  1714. but to

  1715. see your

  1716. name made

  1717. known by

  1718. the people

  1719. that we

  1720. know,

  1721. all for

  1722. your glory.

  1723. We pray

  1724. this in your

  1725. Son's name.

  1726. Amen.
