  1. Well, good morning, everyone.

  2. It's appropriate to start a sermon like this,

  3. quoting the great John Stott,

  4. a British pastor and theologian,

  5. on this issue that we've been wrestling with

  6. over the last number of weeks.

  7. He has written,

  8. it is simply impossible with any shred of Christian integrity

  9. to go on proclaiming that Jesus, by his cross,

  10. has abolished the old divisions

  11. and created a single new humanity of love,

  12. while at the same time,

  13. we are contradicting our message

  14. by tolerating racial or social

  15. or any other barrier within our church fellowships.

  16. I wonder if anything is more urgent today

  17. for the honour of Christ,

  18. for the spread of the gospel,

  19. than for the church to be,

  20. and should be seen to be,

  21. what by God's purpose and Christ's achievement

  22. it already is,

  23. a single new humanity,

  24. a model of human community,

  25. a family of reconciled brothers and sisters

  26. who love their father and love each other,

  27. the evident dwelling place of God by his spirit.

  28. And then he says,

  29. only then will the world believe in Christ as peacemaker.

  30. Only then will God receive the glory due to his name.

  31. That's from his commentary on the book of Ephesians,

  32. written in 1979.

  33. Let's pray.

  34. Gracious Father,

  35. we pray that as your word is open to us this morning,

  36. we ask for the grace to,

  37. and the presence of your Holy Spirit,

  38. to search our hearts.

  39. Help us to be mindful of our own heart,

  40. and not dare to search the heart of another person across the room,

  41. or someone who immediately comes to mind.

  42. And we ask it so that you might be glorified,

  43. and our world might see that Christ is the peacemaker.

  44. Amen.

  45. This vision series that we're in

  46. is about us taking the next steps

  47. to bring glory to God by treasuring Jesus together,

  48. so that our world may come to know,

  49. and to see and believe that Jesus is in fact the peacemaker.

  50. And if you just joined us for the first time,

  51. maybe on stream,

  52. on live stream for the first time,

  53. we have been discovering over the past number of weeks

  54. the necessary foundation to such a corporate life

  55. as we've journeyed through the Bible.

  56. That is, what we've been trying to lay out in front of us

  57. is a Christian worldview,

  58. and the way that it impacts our daily experience,

  59. and therefore how we understand the world,

  60. and how we understand other people and issues within our world.

  61. We started off by seeing that all of humanity

  62. is made in the image of God to show forth His glory,

  63. that is, there's a purpose to the image of God.

  64. We've also seen that right from the very first people,

  65. we have rejected that purpose,

  66. and we lived without God as our ruler,

  67. and therefore we pursued another purpose,

  68. and that is our own personal glory.

  69. The Bible calls that sin.

  70. All people are not just united in carrying the image of God,

  71. but also united in their rejection of God.

  72. And then we saw how God, the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  73. the perfect image of God,

  74. came into His creation as one of us.

  75. Humanity.

  76. He started with us in order to redeem us.

  77. He paid the price for our rebellion against God

  78. by His death on the cross.

  79. And His work on our behalf

  80. restores our image as God's much-loved children,

  81. but also sets us free from sin

  82. in order to pursue the original purpose that God has for us,

  83. and that is to bring glory to Him in all of life,

  84. and not just as individuals,

  85. but as a radical new humanity.

  86. Last week, James unpacked the implications

  87. for each one of us in relation to God

  88. and our understanding of ourselves

  89. and our sense of identity and self.

  90. Jesus gives us the only identity that is secure,

  91. the only identity that you don't have to work for,

  92. and it's a perfect identity.

  93. It's a full identity that is meant to fill us up in every way.

  94. Now, in the next couple of weeks,

  95. I plan to unpack what the implications are

  96. for our relationship with each other as a local church,

  97. particularly around the issue of our unity and diversity

  98. as people from different generations, ethnicities,

  99. cultures, preferences, et cetera, et cetera.

  100. If you've got the St. Paul's app, you can open up.

  101. There's a few points there that I want to go through

  102. in this morning's message.

  103. Now, first of all, gospel thinking is the first point there.

  104. The theology of the apostle Paul

  105. helps us to move in the right direction

  106. of ending racial pride and ethnocentricity

  107. as he brings the gospel to bear on this particular topic.

  108. Paul leaves little doubt

  109. what the heart of the gospel is.

  110. You don't have to go any further than Galatians.

  111. The passage in Galatians, which is read out, verse 16.

  112. We see it there.

  113. We who are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners

  114. know that a man is not justified by observing the law,

  115. but by faith in Jesus Christ.

  116. So we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus,

  117. that we may be justified by faith in Christ

  118. and not by observing the law,

  119. because by observing the law, no one is justified.

  120. So the heart of the gospel for the apostle Paul

  121. is what we call the doctrine of justification by faith.

  122. And it's justification by faith alone,

  123. apart from any works that we might contribute,

  124. any good thing that we might do.

  125. Now, justification is what a judge does in a courtroom.

  126. It is a declaration that a defendant is found innocent

  127. because they actually are innocent.

  128. They are truly innocent.

  129. The defendant is declared to be just

  130. because they're found to be just.

  131. And so the question is,

  132. how can God, the judge, the true judge, the just judge,

  133. declare us righteous and innocent and just

  134. when we're clearly not?

  135. And the answer is, is what we saw a couple of weeks ago,

  136. that Jesus Christ lived and died

  137. to provide our righteousness and to bear our punishment.

  138. Justification by faith puts every single person

  139. on a level playing field, level ground,

  140. in utter dependence on grace, God's grace.

  141. None of us contribute anything to our salvation.

  142. And therefore, justification by faith

  143. has to smash pride in the human heart.

  144. There is no room for pride in the human heart.

  145. That's the heart of the gospel.

  146. And many new, sweet, tender, deep, strong,

  147. beautiful, noble, humble, kind, wise, patient,

  148. caring, servant attitudes and behaviors

  149. flow out from that.

  150. And one of which is the breaking down

  151. of ethnic hostilities and suspicion

  152. and creating unity and harmony.

  153. Justification by faith alone

  154. has overcome all the divisions,

  155. all the divisions

  156. that exist between those who are in God's new humanity,

  157. his people, his church.

  158. Galatians 3, 26.

  159. He's very clear on that.

  160. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

  161. For all of you who were baptized into Christ

  162. have clothed yourselves with Christ.

  163. There is neither Jew nor Greek,

  164. slave nor free,

  165. male nor female,

  166. for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  167. If you belong to Christ,

  168. then you are all Abraham's seed and heirs

  169. according to the promise.

  170. Now I'm going to come back in a little while,

  171. like in a couple of weeks probably,

  172. and explain that there's neither Jew nor Greek,

  173. explain what that means.

  174. But basically what it means here

  175. is very simply,

  176. it's a level playing field.

  177. Your heritage contributes nothing.

  178. I'll unpack a little bit more.

  179. You see,

  180. when Paul says here

  181. to this group of the Galatians

  182. there is neither Jew nor Greek,

  183. slave nor free,

  184. male or female,

  185. what he does is he strikes

  186. at the three major barrier-forming divisions

  187. of human society,

  188. and certainly in the human society in the first century,

  189. and certainly first century for the Jew.

  190. Ethnicity,

  191. economic capacity,

  192. and sexuality.

  193. There was a Jewish prayer

  194. in the first century

  195. that went like this.

  196. Blessed be he

  197. that he did not make me a Gentile.

  198. Blessed be he

  199. that he did not make me a slave

  200. or an ignorant peasant.

  201. Blessed be he

  202. that he did not make me a woman.

  203. Now I imagine a prayer

  204. that was only said

  205. at the bacon-free men's breakfast

  206. on a Saturday morning.

  207. The Christian gospel

  208. smashes those barriers.

  209. And it forms a radical new society.

  210. But it does not obliterate the differences.

  211. Greeks are still Greeks.

  212. Slaves are still slaves.

  213. Females are still females.

  214. What's obliterated here

  215. are the barriers

  216. that formed by those differences.

  217. And a person's status

  218. among the people of God

  219. based on those differences.

  220. That is,

  221. no race,

  222. no nation,

  223. no class,

  224. no gender

  225. has a favoured status

  226. with God.

  227. That was a radical theology

  228. in the first century.

  229. because it flew in the face

  230. of all traditional

  231. cultural norms

  232. and it set people free.

  233. And it continues

  234. to be a radical theology today

  235. because it conflicts

  236. with many of our cultural norms

  237. as well.

  238. The gospel

  239. brings unity

  240. not uniformity.

  241. Secondly,

  242. what the gospel does

  243. is it produces gospel living.

  244. So let's go to Galatians 2

    Galatians 2:11–16

  245. verse 11 to 16.

  246. Just read out for us.

  247. The key phrase

  248. that I want to focus on

  249. is verse 14.

  250. When I saw

  251. that they were not acting

  252. in line

  253. with the truth

  254. of the gospel.

  255. That verse

  256. implies

  257. that there is

  258. a conduct,

  259. there is a behaviour,

  260. there are actions,

  261. things that we can do

  262. that are

  263. out of step

  264. with the truth

  265. of the gospel.

  266. Or to put it another way,

  267. the gospel

  268. governs

  269. not just

  270. our belief

  271. structures,

  272. but all of our behaviours

  273. as well.

  274. All of our actions,

  275. our attitudes.

  276. There is

  277. gospel belief

  278. that must be grasped

  279. but there is also

  280. gospel action

  281. that must be lived.

  282. Some beliefs

  283. contradict the gospel

  284. and some actions

  285. contradict the gospel.

  286. And Peter's actions

  287. here in Galatians 2

  288. was a contradiction

  289. of the gospel.

  290. And that's an important

  291. question

  292. that we can ask

  293. about any of our

  294. habits,

  295. any of our actions,

  296. any of our behaviours.

  297. Do they contradict

  298. the gospel

  299. that I say

  300. that I believe?

  301. Or positively,

  302. is this in step

  303. with the truth

  304. of the gospel?

  305. Does this attitude

  306. and action

  307. say true things

  308. and bring glory

  309. to Jesus?

  310. Does it do that?

  311. Does it reflect

  312. the gospel?

  313. Does it look like

  314. the kind of action

  315. that flows

  316. from the gospel?

  317. gospel?

  318. But at the end

  319. of Galatians 2

  320. 12 we see

  321. that Peter

  322. was governed

  323. by fear

  324. and not

  325. the gospel.

  326. And Paul

  327. rebukes him

  328. for it.

  329. Verse 11,

  330. when Peter

  331. came to Antioch

  332. I opposed him

  333. to his face

  334. because he was

  335. clearly in the wrong.

  336. Before certain

  337. men came

  338. from James

  339. he used

  340. to eat

  341. with the Gentiles

  342. but when

  343. they arrived

  344. he began

  345. to draw back

  346. and separate

  347. himself

  348. from the Gentiles

  349. because he

  350. was afraid

  351. of those

  352. who belonged

  353. to the circumcision

  354. group.

  355. The other Jews

  356. joined him

  357. in his hypocrisy

  358. and so

  359. that by

  360. their hypocrisy

  361. even

  362. Barnabas

  363. was led

  364. astray.

  365. The son

  366. of encouragement

  367. was led

  368. astray.

  369. You see

  370. Peter had been

  371. experiencing

  372. the freedom

  373. of the gospel

  374. as a Jew.

  375. He was crossing

  376. ethnic and

  377. religious barriers

  378. to eat

  379. with Gentiles

  380. something that

  381. was forbidden

  382. and then

  383. it says

  384. in verse 12

  385. that certain

  386. men came

  387. from James.

  388. They were

  389. Jerusalem

  390. conservatives

  391. who believed

  392. that Gentiles

  393. because of

  394. their uncircumcision

  395. and their

  396. unkosher

  397. food

  398. you know

  399. they

  400. ate

  401. prawns

  402. for instance

  403. their

  404. dietary

  405. habits

  406. their

  407. failure

  408. to keep

  409. holy

  410. days

  411. meant

  412. that they

  413. were off

  414. limits

  415. to associate

  416. with

  417. even

  418. if

  419. they

  420. were

  421. Christian

  422. religious

  423. and ethnic

  424. issues

  425. were

  426. inseparable

  427. for them

  428. they

  429. were

  430. not

  431. they

  432. were

  433. afraid

  434. of

  435. maybe

  436. his

  437. own

  438. group

  439. maybe

  440. his

  441. mates

  442. back

  443. in

  444. Jerusalem

  445. or something

  446. but

  447. what's

  448. clear

  449. is

  450. that

  451. fear

  452. in

  453. this

  454. instance

  455. ruined

  456. practical

  457. gospel

  458. faithfulness

  459. fear

  460. did it

  461. he

  462. was

  463. free

  464. he

  465. was

  466. eating

  467. with

  468. his

  469. brothers

  470. across

  471. ethnic

  472. lines

  473. and

  474. fear

  475. at least

  476. in this

  477. particular

  478. moment

  479. fear

  480. destroyed

  481. the

  482. diversity

  483. and the

  484. harmony

  485. and so

  486. I think

  487. at the

  488. very least

  489. what I

  490. can say

  491. from this

  492. passage

  493. is

  494. don't

  495. let

  496. fear

  497. ruin

  498. your

  499. joyful

  500. freedom

  501. in living

  502. and working

  503. and worshipping

  504. and relaxing

  505. and eating

  506. with brothers

  507. and sisters

  508. different

  509. from you

  510. or to

  511. put it

  512. positively

  513. fall in

  514. love again

  515. with the

  516. gospel

  517. rejoice

  518. all over

  519. again

  520. that you

  521. were justified

  522. by faith

  523. alone

  524. justification

  525. by faith

  526. alone

  527. means that

  528. this

  529. faith

  530. and nothing

  531. else

  532. is the

  533. great

  534. eternal

  535. unifier

  536. of all the

  537. peoples of the

  538. world who

  539. trust in

  540. Christ

  541. we need

  542. to keep

  543. putting

  544. Jesus

  545. front and

  546. center

  547. in our

  548. life

  549. together

  550. as a

  551. church

  552. we need

  553. for Jesus

  554. to be

  555. our

  556. greatest

  557. treasure

  558. we need

  559. to remember

  560. that the

  561. divide

  562. could not

  563. have been

  564. larger

  565. between

  566. sinful

  567. human

  568. beings

  569. and the

  570. infinitely

  571. holy

  572. God

  573. but Jesus

  574. did not

  575. despise

  576. us

  577. he came

  578. to us

  579. he loved

  580. us

  581. he died

  582. in our

  583. place

  584. to give

  585. us

  586. life

  587. and he

  588. did that

  589. for us

  590. when we

  591. were more

  592. alien to

  593. him

  594. than

  595. anyone

  596. has ever

  597. been alien

  598. to you

  599. or to

  600. me

  601. anyone

  602. even

  603. across

  604. political

  605. divides

  606. us

  607. when we

  608. think

  609. or feel

  610. or act

  611. with

  612. disdain

  613. or disrespect

  614. or avoidance

  615. or exclusion

  616. or malice

  617. towards a

  618. person

  619. simply

  620. because

  621. he or she

  622. is from

  623. another race

  624. another

  625. ethnic group

  626. another

  627. political

  628. viewpoint

  629. we are

  630. ineffective

  631. saying

  632. that Jesus

  633. acted

  634. foolishly

  635. in the

  636. way he

  637. did

  638. coming to

  639. the earth

  640. to the

  641. cross

  642. for us

  643. and you

  644. don't

  645. ever want

  646. to say

  647. that

  648. and so

  649. what does

  650. it mean

  651. for us

  652. to develop

  653. a gospel

  654. shaped

  655. heart

  656. now this

  657. church

  658. faces

  659. divisions

  660. of all

  661. kinds

  662. ethnicity

  663. age

  664. gender

  665. social

  666. status

  667. financial

  668. status

  669. theological

  670. awareness

  671. historical

  672. connection

  673. political

  674. ideology

  675. we don't

  676. have

  677. signs up

  678. anywhere

  679. here at

  680. St Paul

  681. segregating

  682. people

  683. depending

  684. on what

  685. political

  686. group

  687. you vote

  688. for

  689. what race

  690. you come

  691. from

  692. what generation

  693. you want

  694. we don't

  695. have any

  696. of those

  697. signs

  698. up here

  699. structurally

  700. segregating

  701. people

  702. at all

  703. in fact

  704. we've done

  705. multiple

  706. things over

  707. the years

  708. to break

  709. down

  710. structural

  711. segregation

  712. as a

  713. church

  714. the issue

  715. of this

  716. series

  717. is the

  718. prejudice

  719. and the

  720. implicit

  721. beliefs

  722. that linger

  723. in our

  724. hearts

  725. that can

  726. lead to

  727. anti-gospel

  728. actions

  729. and behaviours

  730. that's what

  731. this series

  732. is about

  733. it's about

  734. searching

  735. the heart

  736. it's about

  737. looking at

  738. the implications

  739. of my

  740. heart

  741. and your

  742. heart

  743. that's

  744. what it's

  745. about

  746. it's

  747. sort of

  748. like a

  749. you know

  750. a motor

  751. mechanic

  752. implicitly

  753. assuming

  754. that girls

  755. can't fix

  756. cars as well

  757. as boys

  758. and therefore

  759. gives less

  760. attention

  761. and fewer

  762. opportunities

  763. to the

  764. female

  765. apprentices

  766. it's that

  767. kind of

  768. thing

  769. it's the

  770. implicit

  771. stuff

  772. that happens

  773. that's what

  774. we're seeking

  775. to address

  776. and my

  777. hope is

  778. that this

  779. series

  780. is that

  781. we will

  782. put to

  783. death

  784. the remaining

  785. corruption

  786. in our

  787. hearts

  788. that thinks

  789. or feels

  790. or acts

  791. with ill

  792. will

  793. towards

  794. others

  795. because of

  796. difference

  797. and in

  798. particular

  799. in ethnic

  800. and racial

  801. difference

  802. so what

  803. I want

  804. to do

  805. here

  806. right

  807. now

  808. is try

  809. to help

  810. us to

  811. see

  812. and remove

  813. one of

  814. the

  815. subtle

  816. sinful

  817. prejudices

  818. in our

  819. hearts

  820. and it's

  821. subtle

  822. it's that

  823. subtle

  824. I don't

  825. think

  826. another

  827. person

  828. can see

  829. it

  830. this is

  831. for your

  832. heart

  833. to assess

  834. it's

  835. that

  836. subtle

  837. but I

  838. want to

  839. do it

  840. anyway

  841. I want

  842. to focus

  843. on John

  844. chapter

  845. one

  846. that

  847. passage

  848. is read

  849. out to

  850. us

  851. in verse

  852. 43

  853. Jesus

  854. calls

  855. Philip

  856. to be

  857. his

  858. disciple

  859. in

  860. verse

  861. 45

  862. Philip

  863. finds

  864. Nathaniel

  865. and says

  866. to him

  867. we have

  868. found

  869. the one

  870. Moses

  871. wrote

  872. about

  873. in

  874. the

  875. law

  876. and

  877. about

  878. whom

  879. the

  880. prophets

  881. also

  882. wrote

  883. Jesus

  884. of

  885. Nazareth

  886. the son

  887. of

  888. Joseph

  889. in

  890. other

  891. words

  892. Philip

  893. in

  894. this

  895. moment

  896. has

  897. believed

  898. in

  899. Jesus

  900. as

  901. the

  902. Messiah

  903. and

  904. he's

  905. eager

  906. here

  907. for

  908. Nathaniel

  909. to

  910. know

  911. him

  912. too

  913. he

  914. identifies

  915. this

  916. one

  917. written

  918. about

  919. by

  920. Moses

  921. and

  922. the

  923. prophets

  924. by

  925. calling

  926. him

  927. Jesus

  928. of

  929. Nazareth

  930. he

  931. identifies

  932. Jesus

  933. with

  934. a

  935. town

  936. a

  937. group

  938. of

  939. people

  940. who

  941. live

  942. in

  943. that

  944. town

  945. and

  946. for

  947. whatever

  948. reason

  949. we're

  950. not

  951. told

  952. Nathaniel

  953. responds

  954. to

  955. Philip

  956. in

  957. verse

  958. 46

  959. Nazareth

  960. can

  961. anything

  962. good

  963. come

  964. from

  965. there

  966. his

  967. question

  968. in

  969. this

  970. moment

  971. amounts

  972. to a

  973. foregone

  974. conclusion

  975. nothing

  976. good

  977. can

  978. come

  979. from

  980. Nazareth

  981. what

  982. was the

  983. nature

  984. of

  985. Nathaniel's

  986. mistake

  987. now

  988. one way

  989. to describe

  990. it would

  991. be to

  992. say

  993. that it

  994. was sinful

  995. prejudice

  996. because of

  997. the people

  998. of Nazareth

  999. he had

  1000. what we

  1001. call

  1002. a

  1003. stereotypical

  1004. view of

  1005. the people

  1006. of Nazareth

  1007. and he

  1008. made this

  1009. judgment

  1010. about

  1011. Jesus

  1012. based on

  1013. that negative

  1014. stereotype

  1015. another way

  1016. to look

  1017. at it

  1018. is that

  1019. Nathaniel

  1020. did

  1021. what

  1022. every one

  1023. of us

  1024. does

  1025. every

  1026. single

  1027. day

  1028. he made

  1029. a

  1030. generalization

  1031. based on

  1032. multiple

  1033. experiences

  1034. and in

  1035. this case

  1036. biblical

  1037. evidence

  1038. and then

  1039. formed a

  1040. probability

  1041. conclusion

  1042. based on

  1043. that

  1044. generalization

  1045. so let me

  1046. try and

  1047. reword

  1048. Nathaniel's

  1049. response

  1050. if you

  1051. like

  1052. my

  1053. experience

  1054. is that

  1055. the people

  1056. of Nazareth

  1057. are ordinary

  1058. I don't

  1059. see in

  1060. the Old

  1061. Testament

  1062. anywhere

  1063. that the

  1064. Messiah

  1065. can come

  1066. from

  1067. Nazareth

  1068. therefore

  1069. from

  1070. that

  1071. biblical

  1072. evidence

  1073. and my

  1074. experience

  1075. my

  1076. general

  1077. observations

  1078. I think

  1079. it's

  1080. highly

  1081. improbable

  1082. if not

  1083. impossible

  1084. that this

  1085. Jesus

  1086. is the

  1087. Messiah

  1088. now

  1089. before we

  1090. go any

  1091. further

  1092. I should

  1093. say

  1094. generalizing

  1095. from our

  1096. experience

  1097. and drawing

  1098. a probability

  1099. conclusion

  1100. is both

  1101. inevitable

  1102. and good

  1103. inevitable

  1104. and good

  1105. the human

  1106. brain works

  1107. that way

  1108. it's part of

  1109. God's good

  1110. gift to us

  1111. it works

  1112. that way

  1113. and in

  1114. fact

  1115. I would

  1116. go as far

  1117. as saying

  1118. that your

  1119. life depends

  1120. on your

  1121. brain

  1122. working

  1123. that way

  1124. for instance

  1125. you observe

  1126. that

  1127. mushrooms

  1128. with certain

  1129. features

  1130. such as

  1131. yellow

  1132. with purple

  1133. dots

  1134. are

  1135. poisonous

  1136. never

  1137. personally

  1138. tasted

  1139. one

  1140. but there's

  1141. enough

  1142. evidence

  1143. to say

  1144. that's

  1145. true

  1146. and when

  1147. someone

  1148. offers

  1149. you a

  1150. mushroom

  1151. that's

  1152. yellow

  1153. with purple

  1154. dots on

  1155. it

  1156. you turn

  1157. it down

  1158. you don't

  1159. go

  1160. well I

  1161. shouldn't be

  1162. prejudiced here

  1163. against this

  1164. mushroom

  1165. you've

  1166. never

  1167. you've

  1168. never

  1169. tested the

  1170. mushroom

  1171. but you

  1172. see it

  1173. and it

  1174. belongs to

  1175. a general

  1176. class

  1177. that raises

  1178. alarm bells

  1179. that says

  1180. poisonous

  1181. and so you

  1182. form a

  1183. probability

  1184. conclusion

  1185. and you

  1186. refuse to

  1187. eat it

  1188. your life

  1189. depends

  1190. on you

  1191. not treating

  1192. that individual

  1193. mushroom

  1194. in isolation

  1195. from your

  1196. experience

  1197. of what

  1198. others

  1199. have done

  1200. when they've

  1201. eaten

  1202. that mushroom

  1203. now of

  1204. course

  1205. sometimes

  1206. our

  1207. judgment

  1208. seems

  1209. totally

  1210. legitimate

  1211. and proves

  1212. to be

  1213. dead

  1214. wrong

  1215. and so

  1216. what about

  1217. Nathaniel

  1218. was his

  1219. a

  1220. non sinful

  1221. fully

  1222. warranted

  1223. probability

  1224. judgment

  1225. that proved

  1226. to be

  1227. wrong

  1228. or is

  1229. Nathaniel

  1230. guilty

  1231. of sinful

  1232. prejudice

  1233. I think

  1234. he's

  1235. guilty

  1236. because

  1237. he doesn't

  1238. say

  1239. can

  1240. the

  1241. Messiah

  1242. come

  1243. from

  1244. Nazareth

  1245. it wasn't

  1246. a biblical

  1247. conclusion

  1248. he says

  1249. Nazareth

  1250. can

  1251. anything

  1252. good

  1253. come

  1254. from

  1255. Nazareth

  1256. now if

  1257. his heart

  1258. was right

  1259. gracious

  1260. loving

  1261. patient

  1262. hopeful

  1263. towards

  1264. the people

  1265. of

  1266. Nazareth

  1267. he might

  1268. have been

  1269. legitimately

  1270. skeptical

  1271. about

  1272. whether

  1273. the

  1274. Messiah

  1275. could

  1276. come

  1277. from

  1278. Nazareth

  1279. and so

  1280. he would

  1281. not

  1282. have

  1283. likely

  1284. said

  1285. at

  1286. that

  1287. point

  1288. Nazareth

  1289. can

  1290. anything

  1291. good

  1292. come

  1293. from

  1294. there

  1295. you see

  1296. Nathaniel

  1297. has moved

  1298. from a

  1299. legitimate

  1300. probability

  1301. conclusion

  1302. to a

  1303. sinful

  1304. prejudice

  1305. at that

  1306. point

  1307. his

  1308. view

  1309. of these

  1310. people

  1311. is so

  1312. negative

  1313. that he

  1314. sweeps

  1315. all of

  1316. them

  1317. into

  1318. a

  1319. stereotype

  1320. including

  1321. the one

  1322. perfect

  1323. human

  1324. being

  1325. Jesus

  1326. of

  1327. Nazareth

  1328. notice

  1329. too that

  1330. his

  1331. reaction

  1332. to what

  1333. Philip

  1334. says

  1335. is

  1336. immediate

  1337. does

  1338. not

  1339. consider

  1340. the

  1341. possibility

  1342. that

  1343. Philip

  1344. might

  1345. know

  1346. what

  1347. he's

  1348. talking

  1349. about

  1350. he's

  1351. temporarily

  1352. blinded

  1353. by his

  1354. prejudice

  1355. at this

  1356. point

  1357. and

  1358. notice

  1359. Philip's

  1360. response

  1361. here

  1362. he doesn't

  1363. go

  1364. racist

  1365. doesn't

  1366. jump on

  1367. his

  1368. Facebook

  1369. feed

  1370. and

  1371. immediately

  1372. call him

  1373. out

  1374. for his

  1375. racism

  1376. simply

  1377. says in

  1378. verse 46

  1379. hey

  1380. come and

  1381. see

  1382. let me

  1383. challenge

  1384. your

  1385. probability

  1386. statement

  1387. come and

  1388. see

  1389. come and

  1390. see the

  1391. potentially

  1392. the one

  1393. Nazarene

  1394. who doesn't

  1395. fit your

  1396. bill

  1397. give this

  1398. man a

  1399. chance

  1400. judge him

  1401. by his

  1402. glory

  1403. not his

  1404. group

  1405. now here's

  1406. the point

  1407. I want to

  1408. make

  1409. there is a

  1410. fine

  1411. line

  1412. between

  1413. legitimate

  1414. probability

  1415. judgments

  1416. and sinful

  1417. prejudice

  1418. it is a

  1419. real line

  1420. and it's a

  1421. real line

  1422. that often

  1423. in fact

  1424. in every

  1425. instance

  1426. God sees

  1427. it

  1428. even if

  1429. we don't

  1430. always see

  1431. it

  1432. we do

  1433. need to be

  1434. careful

  1435. to not

  1436. allow genuine

  1437. and rightful

  1438. assessments of

  1439. people and

  1440. circumstances

  1441. to function

  1442. in our

  1443. heart

  1444. in such

  1445. a way

  1446. that it

  1447. makes the

  1448. shift

  1449. and sometimes

  1450. it's a

  1451. subtle shift

  1452. towards a

  1453. self

  1454. justification

  1455. for sinful

  1456. prejudice

  1457. us

  1458. now my

  1459. sin as I

  1460. mentioned a

  1461. few weeks

  1462. ago was to

  1463. allow past

  1464. experiences to

  1465. assess every

  1466. person in a

  1467. particular racial

  1468. group in such a

  1469. way that I

  1470. treated them all

  1471. with suspicion

  1472. and even

  1473. contempt

  1474. our hearts

  1475. are deceitful

  1476. still

  1477. and corruption

  1478. remains

  1479. and we must

  1480. put it to

  1481. death

  1482. and may the

  1483. Lord give us

  1484. absolute honesty

  1485. with ourselves

  1486. and him

  1487. may he expose

  1488. every remnant

  1489. of sinful

  1490. prejudice

  1491. in our

  1492. hearts

  1493. and may

  1494. we never

  1495. use the

  1496. legitimacy

  1497. of generalizing

  1498. to cloak

  1499. the sin of

  1500. prejudice

  1501. so I

  1502. think it's

  1503. important to

  1504. clarify something

  1505. here

  1506. after speaking

  1507. of my

  1508. experience

  1509. that night

  1510. in Alice

  1511. Springs

  1512. one of our

  1513. church family

  1514. rightfully and

  1515. helpfully pointed

  1516. out to me

  1517. that while they

  1518. don't have a

  1519. particular

  1520. you know

  1521. racial prejudice

  1522. towards the

  1523. group that I

  1524. was mentioning

  1525. they likewise

  1526. like me

  1527. would have felt

  1528. threatened in

  1529. that moment

  1530. but it wasn't

  1531. a racial

  1532. prejudice that

  1533. would cause

  1534. them to be

  1535. threatened in

  1536. that moment

  1537. that is

  1538. a quick

  1539. assessment of

  1540. that scenario

  1541. is a feeling

  1542. of powerlessness

  1543. and threat

  1544. that's helpful

  1545. that's a

  1546. helpful

  1547. probability

  1548. assessment at

  1549. that point

  1550. they were

  1551. right

  1552. and so we

  1553. need to be

  1554. careful of

  1555. just calling

  1556. out situations

  1557. as racial

  1558. prejudice

  1559. when it just

  1560. might simply

  1561. be an

  1562. appropriate

  1563. reflection

  1564. on experience

  1565. and there

  1566. may be

  1567. another

  1568. explanation

  1569. that is

  1570. we need

  1571. to be

  1572. more like

  1573. the

  1574. Philip

  1575. and say

  1576. come and

  1577. see

  1578. rather than

  1579. racist

  1580. come and

  1581. see

  1582. we need

  1583. to be

  1584. so careful

  1585. of making

  1586. assessments

  1587. of each

  1588. other's

  1589. hearts

  1590. and motives

  1591. when we

  1592. just see

  1593. practice

  1594. and I

  1595. am

  1596. therefore

  1597. apologising

  1598. for overstating

  1599. my case

  1600. several weeks

  1601. ago

  1602. I

  1603. believe

  1604. that

  1605. sin

  1606. has

  1607. ruined

  1608. every

  1609. heart

  1610. but we

  1611. are not

  1612. ruined

  1613. in all

  1614. the same

  1615. way

  1616. if you

  1617. were an

  1618. onlooker

  1619. with me

  1620. in that

  1621. moment

  1622. in Alice

  1623. Springs

  1624. in 2005

  1625. you

  1626. couldn't

  1627. tell

  1628. on that

  1629. moment

  1630. by my

  1631. behaviour

  1632. what was

  1633. happening

  1634. in my

  1635. heart

  1636. can I

  1637. also

  1638. add

  1639. I

  1640. didn't

  1641. understand

  1642. my

  1643. heart

  1644. fully

  1645. in that

  1646. moment

  1647. either

  1648. I

  1649. wasn't

  1650. aware

  1651. I

  1652. was

  1653. threatened

  1654. by my

  1655. circumstances

  1656. which

  1657. led

  1658. into

  1659. a

  1660. sinful

  1661. prejudice

  1662. a

  1663. right

  1664. threatening

  1665. of

  1666. circumstance

  1667. in an

  1668. area

  1669. that I

  1670. didn't

  1671. know

  1672. which

  1673. most

  1674. people

  1675. would

  1676. have

  1677. but it

  1678. led

  1679. into

  1680. a

  1681. sinful

  1682. prejudice

  1683. and it

  1684. was so

  1685. easy

  1686. for me

  1687. in that

  1688. moment

  1689. to

  1690. justify

  1691. my

  1692. response

  1693. simply

  1694. as

  1695. self

  1696. preservation

  1697. how did

  1698. I know

  1699. that I'd

  1700. slipped over

  1701. into

  1702. sinful

  1703. prejudice

  1704. the next

  1705. morning

  1706. the next

  1707. morning

  1708. it was

  1709. so

  1710. it was

  1711. it wasn't

  1712. so easy

  1713. to justify

  1714. my

  1715. heart

  1716. when

  1717. the

  1718. tables

  1719. are

  1720. turned

  1721. and

  1722. I

  1723. was

  1724. in

  1725. a

  1726. position

  1727. of

  1728. power

  1729. the

  1730. next

  1731. morning

  1732. I was

  1733. preaching

  1734. in a

  1735. local

  1736. church

  1737. I was

  1738. doing

  1739. what I

  1740. do

  1741. here

  1742. there

  1743. were no

  1744. signs up

  1745. in this

  1746. particular

  1747. church

  1748. saying

  1749. segregation

  1750. black

  1751. people at

  1752. the back

  1753. white

  1754. people at

  1755. the front

  1756. there was

  1757. formal

  1758. indication

  1759. that this

  1760. is how

  1761. you sit

  1762. but that's

  1763. what

  1764. happened

  1765. white

  1766. people at

  1767. the front

  1768. black

  1769. people at

  1770. the back

  1771. I was

  1772. the guest

  1773. of

  1774. honor

  1775. I was

  1776. the preacher

  1777. I was

  1778. the

  1779. in my

  1780. domain

  1781. the position

  1782. of power

  1783. no threats

  1784. were happening

  1785. to me in that

  1786. moment at

  1787. all

  1788. and when it

  1789. came time

  1790. in the middle

  1791. of the service

  1792. for us to

  1793. greet one

  1794. another

  1795. I found

  1796. it so hard

  1797. to cross

  1798. the imaginary

  1799. divide which

  1800. was existing

  1801. in the room

  1802. not a

  1803. single person

  1804. in that

  1805. room

  1806. in that

  1807. moment

  1808. would have

  1809. questioned

  1810. my actions

  1811. not a

  1812. single

  1813. person

  1814. I walked

  1815. around the

  1816. room

  1817. I greeted

  1818. people as

  1819. the preacher

  1820. I had other

  1821. things happening

  1822. on

  1823. they couldn't

  1824. see my

  1825. heart

  1826. but when I

  1827. finally did

  1828. cross the

  1829. imaginary

  1830. divide

  1831. the response

  1832. I received

  1833. from the

  1834. two individuals

  1835. that I shook

  1836. hands with

  1837. started to

  1838. break my

  1839. heart on

  1840. this issue

  1841. God was

  1842. revealing

  1843. something to

  1844. me in

  1845. my heart

  1846. unbeknownst

  1847. to anyone

  1848. else in

  1849. that room

  1850. in that

  1851. moment

  1852. I performed

  1853. in a way

  1854. that everyone

  1855. expected me

  1856. to perform

  1857. on that

  1858. day

  1859. I want to

  1860. keep coming

  1861. back to

  1862. this point

  1863. it's about

  1864. your heart

  1865. my heart

  1866. don't

  1867. assume to

  1868. know someone

  1869. else's

  1870. heart

  1871. come and

  1872. see

  1873. so let

  1874. me close

  1875. with three

  1876. indications

  1877. of a good

  1878. heart as we

  1879. struggle with

  1880. the line

  1881. between

  1882. inevitable

  1883. generalizations

  1884. and sinful

  1885. prejudice

  1886. forgiveness

  1887. it's a

  1888. heart that

  1889. has received

  1890. Christ

  1891. knows

  1892. forgiveness

  1893. and is

  1894. indwelt by

  1895. the Holy

  1896. Spirit

  1897. so this

  1898. is very

  1899. brief

  1900. number one

  1901. the good

  1902. heart

  1903. desires to

  1904. know people

  1905. and to

  1906. treat people

  1907. for who

  1908. they really

  1909. are as

  1910. individuals

  1911. not simply

  1912. as a

  1913. representative

  1914. of a

  1915. class

  1916. or a

  1917. group

  1918. if this

  1919. were not

  1920. so

  1921. Jesus

  1922. could never

  1923. be

  1924. recognized

  1925. for who

  1926. he truly

  1927. is as

  1928. the son

  1929. of God

  1930. and so

  1931. my question

  1932. for us

  1933. as a

  1934. church

  1935. is do

  1936. you

  1937. desire

  1938. I mean

  1939. really

  1940. desire

  1941. to know

  1942. people

  1943. and treat

  1944. people

  1945. as

  1946. individuals

  1947. not merely

  1948. as samples

  1949. of a

  1950. group

  1951. number

  1952. two

  1953. this good

  1954. heart

  1955. is willing

  1956. to take

  1957. risks

  1958. to act

  1959. against

  1960. negative

  1961. expectations

  1962. and belittling

  1963. stereotypes

  1964. when dealing

  1965. with another

  1966. person

  1967. Paul said

  1968. 1 Corinthians

  1969. 13

  1970. love

  1971. believes

  1972. all

  1973. things

  1974. and it

  1975. hopes

  1976. all

  1977. things

  1978. I think

  1979. he meant

  1980. that love

  1981. strives

  1982. to believe

  1983. and hope

  1984. for the

  1985. best

  1986. and not

  1987. the worst

  1988. and thirdly

  1989. the good

  1990. heart

  1991. is ready

  1992. like

  1993. Nathaniel

  1994. to repent

  1995. quickly

  1996. and fully

  1997. when we

  1998. have made

  1999. a mistake

  2000. and judged

  2001. someone

  2002. wrongly

  2003. this is

  2004. what

  2005. I want

  2006. for my

  2007. heart

  2008. to be

  2009. towards

  2010. you

  2011. yours

  2012. towards

  2013. me

  2014. and

  2015. ours

  2016. towards

  2017. all

  2018. people

  2019. you

  2020. across
