  1. Good morning, everyone. Great to be with you again this morning.

  2. If you'd like to keep your Bibles open there at Isaiah, that would be fantastic.

  3. This vision series, the title of it is All Your Life.

  4. It's up there on the screen. All Your Life.

  5. And yet, it's not about you.

  6. Well, this is what Rick Warren says in the opening of his book, The Purpose Driven Life.

  7. He goes on to say that the purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment,

  8. your peace of mind, or even your happiness.

  9. It is far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambitions.

  10. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God.

  11. You were born by his purpose and for his purpose.

  12. That, in essence, is what we've been engaging with over the course of this term,

  13. as we've looked at this topic of all of your life and God's purpose for you,

  14. for us as a church here at St. Paul's.

  15. But a church like this, multi-ethnic, as we've already heard multiple times,

  16. multi-ethnic, multi-generational, is but a mere reflection of God's ultimate goal in history.

  17. The final picture of history and the goal of God's plan for history is in Revelation 5.

  18. We just had a little bit of it read out to us because we wanted to end there at the point

  19. where there's great tears in the heavenly realms because no one can open the scroll.

  20. That's a problem.

  21. It's a massive problem because this scroll is the revelation of God's plans and purposes

  22. for all of history.

  23. And if you don't know what it is, if you can't open it, you can't read, you don't know what it is,

  24. then everything is purposeless.

  25. And so there's tears because there's purposelessness in life.

  26. And then in verse 9 of chapter 5 of Revelation, the Apostle John tells us that Jesus is able to open the scroll

  27. and tells us why Jesus is worthy to open this scroll, this book of the end of history,

  28. so that everything unfolds according to the plan of God.

  29. And he declares there that Jesus is worthy because of how his death relates to all races and tribes

  30. and peoples of the earth.

  31. We read,

  32. You are worthy to take the scroll to open its seals because you were slain.

  33. And with your blood, you purchased people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.

  34. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,

  35. and they will reign on the earth.

  36. That is the reason why Jesus is the one who can open the book of history

  37. and bring history to its ultimate goal and ending,

  38. is that by his death, he has ransomed for God,

  39. that is for the glory of God and for the worship of God,

  40. people from every tribe and language and nation.

  41. Notice too that everyone who has been ransomed by Jesus is called a priest.

  42. That is, a Christian by definition is a full-time worshipper of God.

  43. That's your job, if you like.

  44. That's your role, your full-time.

  45. You have been rescued from non-worship for worship.

  46. Jesus died to ransom worshippers for God from every race and language and cultures of the earth.

  47. And the goal of all things is in Revelation 5, verses 13 and 14, if you've got that open.

    Revelation 5:13

  48. Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea

  49. and all that is in them singing,

  50. to him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb,

  51. be praise and honour and glory and power forever and ever.

  52. The four living creatures said, Amen.

  53. And the elders fell down and worshipped.

  54. That's it there.

  55. That's the end of all things.

  56. That's the purpose of all things right there.

  57. That right there is what creation is about.

  58. This is what history is about.

  59. It's what the nations are about.

  60. It's what the races are about.

  61. It's what language is about.

  62. It's what St. Paul is about.

  63. It's what my life is about.

  64. It's what your life is about.

  65. Right there.

  66. We exist to worship the magnificent and the gracious God.

  67. And in the end, God's purpose is that we have been ransomed through Christ to do that,

  68. not just now, but for all of eternity, for our joy.

  69. And we will never live out that purpose now or follow through with any commitment that we might have made in this vision series

  70. unless we are captivated by him.

  71. Mere self-will won't do it.

  72. Pulling up our socks and trying harder will not do it.

  73. We must be captivated by Christ.

  74. And our lives will never be captivated and giving glory to God,

  75. worshipping him,

  76. while ever we are captivated by far lesser glories.

  77. While ever we are gazing on far lesser glories,

  78. we will never be captivated by the ultimate glory.

  79. That ultimately, to cut to the chase, is what your devotional life is about.

  80. Your devotional life is about God's presence,

  81. is about seeing Christ in his word for his glory.

  82. We need to see God.

  83. We need to gaze on his glory, to live life well.

  84. That is, we don't exist by bread and water alone,

  85. but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

  86. And my thinking of it is that we need that now more than anything.

  87. Anxiety and apathy are rising in our society

  88. and rising in the church after two years of COVID.

  89. I think that the languishing stuff that I've spoken about previously

  90. is a very real thing for us.

  91. One example is our NextGen project.

  92. Now, don't even, you know, scold you on this.

  93. That's not my intention here.

  94. We've got four days to go,

  95. and so far we've raised about $13,000 of our $70,000.

  96. Let me tell you, my experience here is

  97. I've not seen a response like that in 10 years at St. Paul's.

  98. And so therefore, my conclusion is

  99. that what we need now,

  100. even more than we need the rest of that money

  101. to make up the $70,000 that we're after,

  102. we need to see God.

  103. We need to see his glory and be captivated by him.

  104. And so I want to take, as we finish off this vision series,

  105. just take one last glimpse of our great God

  106. and why he is worthy of all of your life.

  107. Why he is worthy for you to be captivated by him,

  108. to worship him, to adore him,

  109. to magnify, glorify him,

  110. and do everything to align to him.

  111. So let's go to Isaiah 6.

  112. Isaiah 6 in one hand

  113. and St. Paul's app in the other,

  114. if you've got that.

  115. If you haven't, I think there's little code things,

  116. QR codes at the back of the seats.

  117. We can get St. Paul's app up.

  118. Isaiah 6, which was just read out to us,

  119. towers like a majestic peak

  120. over the surrounding terrain of Isaiah.

  121. And it is of central importance

  122. to the prophecy of Isaiah.

  123. You see, in Isaiah chapters 1 to 5,

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  124. the problem of God's people there

  125. is posed as corruption.

  126. They're described as being corrupt.

  127. And they were corrupt

  128. because their increasing affluence,

  129. God's blessing on their life,

  130. their increasing affluence and wealth,

  131. led them to a dim view of God.

  132. That is, they looked at God

  133. and they loved their shiny money

  134. and bank accounts.

  135. They loved, they were captivated by that,

  136. by the ease of their life,

  137. the comfort of their life.

  138. And so vision of God went like this

  139. as vision of their possessions went like that.

  140. And they felt secure.

  141. They were secure in their mediocrity.

  142. They were secure in their sin.

  143. Just so long as they went through

  144. the rituals of their religious performance.

  145. What they need to see,

  146. what Isaiah need to see,

  147. was God, a greater glory.

  148. And I'm convinced that what we need to see

  149. is a greater glory.

  150. Because right now,

  151. after two years of COVID

  152. and a whole heap of other things

  153. happening in our world,

  154. frankly, just my own life

  155. in this start of this year

  156. has been awful start of the year,

  157. is to realize

  158. that those things are mere myths.

  159. But God endures forever.

  160. So let's do that.

  161. Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  162. Three points.

  163. First point, glorious God.

  164. Like Revelation 5,

  165. the scene of Isaiah 6

  166. is the throne room of God.

  167. And there are at least seven glimpses

  168. of the greatness of God

  169. that I see here

  170. in the first four verses.

  171. And I just want to go through

  172. those seven things real quickly.

  173. So you need Isaiah 6 open

  174. so that you don't look at me.

  175. I'm not glorious.

  176. God is glorious in his words.

  177. So let's look at there.

  178. First of all,

  179. we notice that God is alive

  180. in the year

  181. that King Uzziah died.

  182. I saw the Lord

  183. seated on a throne.

  184. So Uzziah is dead.

  185. He's no longer sitting

  186. on his throne.

  187. He's dead.

  188. But the King of Kings

  189. still sits,

  190. is seated on his throne.

  191. Psalm 90 verse 2 says,

    Psalms 90:2

  192. of this God,

  193. before the mountains were born,

  194. or you brought forth

  195. the earth and the world

  196. from everlasting

  197. to everlasting,

  198. you are God.

  199. That is,

  200. he's the living God.

  201. He was alive

  202. and reigning

  203. on his throne

  204. before he banged

  205. this whole universe

  206. into space

  207. just by the simple

  208. speaking of a word.

  209. He was the living God

  210. when the Great Wall of China

  211. was built

  212. in magnificent feet.

  213. He was the living God

  214. when in 1966,

  215. Time magazine

  216. put on its front cover,

  217. God is dead.

  218. He was alive then.

  219. He will be living

  220. 10 trillion

  221. ages from now.

  222. Right now,

  223. that is,

  224. every head of state

  225. that's currently

  226. sitting on a throne

  227. or ruling a government

  228. right now

  229. will not be in existence

  230. within 90 years,

  231. including Putin.

  232. He will not be sitting

  233. on any kind of throne.

  234. He will not have

  235. any palace at all.

  236. But the King of Kings

  237. will be ruling

  238. all things

  239. still.

  240. In a brief

  241. 120 years,

  242. this planet

  243. will be populated

  244. by more than

  245. apparently

  246. 10.9 billion

  247. brand new people.

  248. And the almost

  249. 7.9 billion

  250. that are currently

  251. alive today

  252. will be just like

  253. Uzziah,

  254. dead and buried.

  255. Gone.

  256. And in no time

  257. at all,

  258. the face

  259. of the events

  260. of world history

  261. will bear

  262. no recollection

  263. of our even existence.

  264. We'll be gone.

  265. But not God.

  266. He is

  267. and he always

  268. will be

  269. alive.

  270. He never had

  271. a beginning

  272. and he never

  273. had an end.

  274. That just blows

  275. the mind.

  276. I don't know,

  277. there's nothing

  278. in our world

  279. that never

  280. had a beginning

  281. and never

  282. had an end.

  283. Everything

  284. has a beginning

  285. and an end.

  286. Secondly,

  287. we see this God

  288. is authoritative.

  289. Verse 2,

  290. I saw the Lord

  291. sit on a throne.

  292. There is

  293. no vision

  294. of heaven

  295. in the Bible

  296. that ever

  297. catches a glimpse

  298. of God

  299. cooking a meal,

  300. cutting the grass,

  301. shining shoes,

  302. filling out forms,

  303. loading a truck.

  304. Nothing

  305. like that.

  306. He always

  307. sits

  308. on a throne

  309. and that throne

  310. is his right

  311. to rule

  312. the universe.

  313. We do not

  314. give God

  315. authority over

  316. our lives.

  317. He has it.

  318. He has it already.

  319. We don't give it

  320. to him

  321. and he has it

  322. whether we like it

  323. or not.

  324. I think there are

  325. a few things

  326. more humbling.

  327. Few things

  328. give us that

  329. sense of the

  330. raw majesty

  331. of God

  332. as the truth

  333. that God

  334. is utterly

  335. authoritative

  336. over everything.

  337. That is,

  338. beyond him

  339. there is no

  340. appeal.

  341. There is nowhere

  342. else to go.

  343. Thirdly,

  344. we see that he

  345. is all powerful

  346. and beyond

  347. manipulation.

  348. The throne

  349. of his authority

  350. is not one

  351. amongst many.

  352. He says,

  353. I saw the Lord

  354. sit on a throne

  355. high and exalted.

  356. That is,

  357. that God's throne

  358. is higher

  359. than every

  360. other throne

  361. signifies God's

  362. superior power

  363. to exercise

  364. his authority.

  365. No opposing

  366. authority

  367. can nullify

  368. the decrees

  369. of God.

  370. Nothing.

  371. Power,

  372. sorry,

  373. authority is the

  374. right to rule

  375. power,

  376. power is the

  377. ability to

  378. rule.

  379. And God's

  380. got both.

  381. Nothing

  382. can stand

  383. in the way

  384. of his purposes

  385. being accomplished.

  386. Nothing.

  387. And as

  388. powerful

  389. and beyond

  390. manipulation

  391. he is,

  392. he is the

  393. just judge

  394. of all

  395. of humanity

  396. and he

  397. in the

  398. end

  399. will hold

  400. every

  401. single

  402. person

  403. accountable.

  404. And so

  405. friends,

  406. to be

  407. gripped by

  408. the all

  409. powerful

  410. sovereignty

  411. of God

  412. is either

  413. marvelous

  414. because

  415. you know

  416. he is for

  417. you in

  418. Jesus

  419. or it

  420. is

  421. absolutely

  422. terrifying

  423. because you

  424. know he's

  425. against you.

  426. indifference

  427. kind of

  428. response

  429. simply means

  430. that you

  431. have not

  432. seen him

  433. for who

  434. he is.

  435. Which

  436. much of

  437. western

  438. Christianity

  439. has not

  440. seen him

  441. for who

  442. he is,

  443. we have

  444. domesticated

  445. God into

  446. our image.

  447. the

  448. sovereign

  449. authority

  450. of the

  451. living

  452. God

  453. is a

  454. refuge

  455. full of

  456. joy and

  457. power for

  458. those who

  459. are his.

  460. It is

  461. terrifying

  462. for those

  463. who are

  464. not.

  465. Fourthly,

  466. we see

  467. that this

  468. God is

  469. magnificent.

  470. As I

  471. said,

  472. I saw

  473. the Lord

  474. sit on

  475. a throne

  476. high and

  477. exalted

  478. and the

  479. train of

  480. his robe

  481. filled the

  482. temple.

  483. Now

  484. whenever I

  485. read this,

  486. my mind

  487. goes back

  488. 40-something

  489. years

  490. at the

  491. wedding of

  492. Diana Princess

  493. of Wales

  494. back in

  495. 1981.

  496. I was

  497. a kid,

  498. I was 11

  499. or something

  500. at the

  501. time when

  502. she got

  503. married.

  504. I remember

  505. having to

  506. endure the

  507. wedding service

  508. as an

  509. 11-year-old

  510. in the

  511. middle of

  512. the night

  513. because

  514. parents wanted

  515. to see

  516. this.

  517. It was

  518. like a

  519. wedding

  520. party,

  521. not like

  522. a reception,

  523. I mean a

  524. wedding

  525. party.

  526. I just

  527. remember

  528. going to

  529. this

  530. house,

  531. all these

  532. kids there,

  533. we had

  534. all our

  535. beds lined

  536. up because

  537. we had

  538. to go to

  539. sleep and

  540. get woken

  541. up at

  542. like 1

  543. o'clock in

  544. the morning

  545. or something

  546. like that

  547. to watch

  548. the royal

  549. wedding.

  550. And I

  551. remember

  552. on the

  553. little dodgy

  554. TV,

  555. they were

  556. colour back

  557. in those

  558. days,

  559. but this

  560. little TV

  561. were all

  562. watching

  563. this royal

  564. wedding.

  565. And I

  566. remember

  567. as she

  568. gets out

  569. of the

  570. carriage

  571. and starts

  572. to walk

  573. up the

  574. stairs of

  575. St.

  576. Paul's

  577. Cathedral

  578. and the

  579. train of

  580. her dress

  581. just kept

  582. going and

  583. going and

  584. going.

  585. And as

  586. she's walking

  587. up the

  588. steps,

  589. I think it

  590. was mainly

  591. the women

  592. in the

  593. house,

  594. just went

  595. ooh,

  596. ah,

  597. gasp,

  598. you know,

  599. all this

  600. stuff.

  601. And I'm

  602. sitting there

  603. going,

  604. oh,

  605. let me go

  606. to sleep.

  607. But I

  608. just remember

  609. the gasping

  610. that was

  611. happening in

  612. the room.

  613. It was

  614. spectacular.

  615. It's like it

  616. covered the

  617. steps of

  618. St.

  619. Paul's

  620. Cathedral

  621. in London.

  622. So what

  623. would it

  624. mean if

  625. the train

  626. filled the

  627. aisle and

  628. covered the

  629. seats and

  630. covered the

  631. entire

  632. cathedral and

  633. the choir

  634. loft and

  635. the pulpit

  636. and it

  637. was all

  638. woven from

  639. one single

  640. piece of

  641. thread?

  642. What would

  643. that mean?

  644. Oh,

  645. massive

  646. gasp.

  647. You see,

  648. that God's

  649. robe fills

  650. the entire

  651. heavenly

  652. temple,

  653. not St.

  654. Paul's

  655. Cathedral,

  656. but the

  657. heavenly

  658. temple means

  659. that this

  660. God is

  661. a God

  662. of

  663. incomparable

  664. splendor and

  665. beauty,

  666. magnificence.

  667. When you

  668. look at it,

  669. it's just

  670. gasp.

  671. The best

  672. scenes in

  673. all of

  674. creation is

  675. just a

  676. fraction of

  677. the representation

  678. of the

  679. God who

  680. made it,

  681. of his

  682. magnificence.

  683. I don't

  684. even know

  685. if it's

  686. even

  687. possible

  688. to get

  689. the

  690. Swiss

  691. Alps

  692. and to

  693. make it

  694. even more

  695. spectacular.

  696. But you

  697. gaze on the

  698. Swiss Alps

  699. and you

  700. look at

  701. God,

  702. oh,

  703. he is

  704. phenomenal.

  705. It just

  706. reflects him.

  707. His

  708. magnificence,

  709. his splendor,

  710. his beauty

  711. spills over

  712. in excessive

  713. creative beauty

  714. in the

  715. world,

  716. the wonder

  717. of

  718. creation,

  719. right from

  720. this world

  721. to the

  722. depths of

  723. the seas,

  724. to the

  725. farthest

  726. reaches of

  727. the universe,

  728. from the

  729. tiniest

  730. atoms to

  731. the largest

  732. landscape,

  733. simply

  734. displays

  735. him in

  736. some

  737. measure.

  738. Fifthly,

  739. and you

  740. can see

  741. why number

  742. five is

  743. important,

  744. this God

  745. is revered,

  746. above him

  747. were seraphs,

  748. each with

  749. six wings,

  750. with two

  751. wings,

  752. they covered

  753. their faces,

  754. with two,

  755. they covered

  756. their feet,

  757. and with two

  758. they were

  759. flying.

  760. Now,

  761. no Bible

  762. commentator

  763. really knows

  764. what these

  765. six wing

  766. creatures really

  767. are,

  768. they've got

  769. eyes,

  770. they've got

  771. feet,

  772. they've got

  773. intelligence.

  774. One thing

  775. is for sure,

  776. when you

  777. look at the

  778. heavenly throne

  779. room,

  780. we should not

  781. automatically have

  782. in mind,

  783. when we think

  784. of angels,

  785. chubby little

  786. babies with

  787. wings,

  788. fluttering around

  789. the head of

  790. God in some

  791. way.

  792. It's very

  793. crucial that

  794. when we see

  795. here that when

  796. one of them

  797. speaks,

  798. in verse

  799. four,

  800. the foundation

  801. of the

  802. temple shakes,

  803. the foundation

  804. of the heavenly

  805. throne room

  806. shakes.

  807. That is,

  808. these are not

  809. chubby little

  810. babies with

  811. wings on,

  812. they are no

  813. puny creatures,

  814. there's no silly

  815. little creatures

  816. in heaven,

  817. only magnificent

  818. one.

  819. And the point

  820. of this

  821. scene is

  822. that not

  823. even they

  824. can look

  825. upon

  826. this

  827. God

  828. and nor

  829. do they

  830. feel worthy

  831. to leave

  832. and leave

  833. their feet

  834. exposed in

  835. his presence.

  836. As great

  837. and as good

  838. as they are,

  839. untainted by

  840. human sin

  841. as they

  842. are,

  843. they revere

  844. their created

  845. God with

  846. great humility.

  847. humility.

  848. Now,

  849. this is crucial.

  850. This is

  851. helping us to

  852. see the gap

  853. between you

  854. and me

  855. and him

  856. because when

  857. one of these

  858. angels,

  859. these seraphs,

  860. appears before

  861. a human being

  862. in the Bible,

  863. they normally

  864. begin their

  865. dialogue with

  866. the human being

  867. with the words

  868. do not fear

  869. or fear not.

  870. That's because

  871. when we're

  872. confronted with

  873. one of these,

  874. we fear.

  875. That's immediate

  876. response is

  877. the fear.

  878. We automatically

  879. realize our

  880. lack of power,

  881. our impotence

  882. at that point.

  883. But these

  884. angels themselves

  885. hide in

  886. holy fear

  887. and reverence

  888. in the presence

  889. of God.

  890. And the only

  891. appropriate response

  892. to this God

  893. is reverence,

  894. service and

  895. worship.

  896. The sixth thing

  897. we see is that

  898. God is holy.

  899. Verse 3,

  900. And they were

  901. calling to one

  902. another,

  903. holy,

  904. holy,

  905. holy is the

  906. Lord Almighty.

  907. The whole

  908. earth is

  909. full of

  910. his glory.

  911. So what we

  912. have here is

  913. the possibility

  914. of language

  915. runs out.

  916. That is,

  917. how do we

  918. describe God?

  919. It kind of

  920. runs out.

  921. The word

  922. holy carries

  923. us to the

  924. brink,

  925. to the very

  926. edge,

  927. if you like,

  928. of the

  929. possibilities

  930. of language,

  931. of description,

  932. and beyond

  933. which experience

  934. of God is

  935. beyond our

  936. words.

  937. The reason

  938. I say that

  939. is that

  940. every effort

  941. to define

  942. the holiness

  943. of God

  944. ultimately

  945. winds us

  946. back,

  947. right back

  948. around,

  949. and simply

  950. say,

  951. God is

  952. God.

  953. The meaning

  954. of the word

  955. holy in the

  956. Bible is to

  957. cut or to

  958. separate.

  959. A holy

  960. thing is to

  961. cut off or to

  962. separate it

  963. from the

  964. common

  965. use for

  966. devotion to

  967. God.

  968. That's what

  969. it means to

  970. be holy.

  971. So what

  972. happens when

  973. you take

  974. that definition

  975. and you

  976. apply it to

  977. God?

  978. From what

  979. can you

  980. separate God

  981. to make

  982. God holy?

  983. holy?

  984. And the

  985. answer is

  986. the very

  987. godness of

  988. God means

  989. that he is

  990. in fact

  991. separated from

  992. everything else.

  993. He's

  994. separated from

  995. everything that's

  996. not God.

  997. He spoke

  998. every single

  999. thing into

  1000. existence.

  1001. He exists

  1002. in a very

  1003. different way

  1004. than all of

  1005. the creation

  1006. exists.

  1007. We his

  1008. creatures

  1009. exist

  1010. independent

  1011. deprived

  1012. finite

  1013. fragile

  1014. way

  1015. but our

  1016. creator

  1017. exists in

  1018. eternal

  1019. self-sustaining

  1020. necessary

  1021. way.

  1022. Necessary

  1023. in the

  1024. sense

  1025. that God

  1026. does not

  1027. have it

  1028. in him

  1029. to go

  1030. out of

  1031. existence

  1032. in the

  1033. same way

  1034. that we

  1035. do not

  1036. have it

  1037. in us

  1038. to not

  1039. go out

  1040. of existence.

  1041. We

  1042. necessarily

  1043. age

  1044. and die

  1045. because that

  1046. is our

  1047. present nature

  1048. to do

  1049. that.

  1050. We cannot

  1051. do anything

  1052. else

  1053. but that.

  1054. Oh the

  1055. blessing of

  1056. eternal life.

  1057. The

  1058. blessing of

  1059. eternal

  1060. life.

  1061. Only God

  1062. necessarily

  1063. continues

  1064. forever

  1065. unchanged.

  1066. The God

  1067. of the

  1068. Bible

  1069. doesn't

  1070. need a

  1071. support

  1072. system.

  1073. He

  1074. doesn't

  1075. need our

  1076. praise

  1077. and glory.

  1078. He is

  1079. one of a

  1080. kind.

  1081. He is

  1082. separated from

  1083. everything.

  1084. And in that

  1085. sense it's

  1086. just saying

  1087. he's holy.

  1088. God has

  1089. life in

  1090. himself.

  1091. He draws

  1092. his unending

  1093. energy from

  1094. himself.

  1095. His beginning

  1096. being and his

  1097. character are not

  1098. determined by

  1099. anything outside

  1100. of himself.

  1101. He is

  1102. absolute.

  1103. Everything that

  1104. exists derives

  1105. itself directly

  1106. from him.

  1107. Everything

  1108. derives itself

  1109. from him.

  1110. He is

  1111. incomparable.

  1112. His

  1113. holiness

  1114. determines all

  1115. that he is

  1116. and all

  1117. that he

  1118. does.

  1119. And it's

  1120. determined by

  1121. no one

  1122. and by

  1123. nothing.

  1124. Call it his

  1125. majesty.

  1126. Call it his

  1127. divinity.

  1128. Call it his

  1129. greatness.

  1130. Call it his

  1131. worth.

  1132. Call it his

  1133. value.

  1134. Call it his

  1135. magnificence.

  1136. In the end

  1137. language runs

  1138. out to

  1139. describe this

  1140. God.

  1141. God.

  1142. There may be

  1143. a lot more

  1144. to know about

  1145. him but it's

  1146. beyond language

  1147. to comprehend

  1148. it.

  1149. And so

  1150. God

  1151. graciously

  1152. reveals it.

  1153. And that's

  1154. the seventh

  1155. and final

  1156. thing that we

  1157. see about

  1158. God.

  1159. That is he

  1160. is glorious.

  1161. Verse

  1162. three again

  1163. holy holy

  1164. holy is the

  1165. Lord almighty

  1166. the whole

  1167. earth is

  1168. full of his

  1169. glory.

  1170. Now

  1171. this is the

  1172. picture here

  1173. trying to

  1174. get the

  1175. magnificence of

  1176. this God.

  1177. We start

  1178. here in the

  1179. heavenly throne

  1180. room and we

  1181. end Isaiah

  1182. in the

  1183. earth the

  1184. world.

  1185. The very

  1186. last chapter

  1187. we're given a

  1188. glimpse of God's

  1189. grandeur again.

  1190. Let me read

  1191. to you what

  1192. Isaiah this is

  1193. what God

  1194. says.

  1195. This is what

  1196. the Lord

  1197. says.

  1198. Heaven is my

  1199. throne.

  1200. That's where we

  1201. are.

  1202. Isaiah 6.

  1203. And the

  1204. earth is my

  1205. footstool.

  1206. This is the

  1207. only place in

  1208. the Bible where

  1209. the earth is

  1210. described as the

  1211. footstool of

  1212. God.

  1213. So just to

  1214. give you some

  1215. visual help

  1216. here.

  1217. This is mine.

  1218. The cat

  1219. sleeps on it

  1220. most of the

  1221. time and

  1222. scratches it

  1223. up.

  1224. This is

  1225. mine.

  1226. My footstool.

  1227. God's

  1228. footstool that

  1229. he rests his

  1230. foot on is

  1231. almost 6,500

  1232. kilometers straight

  1233. through.

  1234. 40,000

  1235. kilometers if

  1236. you go all

  1237. the way around.

  1238. It weighs

  1239. something like

  1240. 60 million

  1241. trillion tons.

  1242. I can lift

  1243. this one up

  1244. with two

  1245. fingers.

  1246. It has a

  1247. surface area

  1248. of 510

  1249. million square

  1250. kilometers, a

  1251. volume of

  1252. approximately 10

  1253. trillion cubic

  1254. kilometers.

  1255. It spins at

  1256. 1,600 kilometers

  1257. an hour.

  1258. And God

  1259. says this is

  1260. where I rest

  1261. my foot.

  1262. My throne is

  1263. a throne over

  1264. all the

  1265. universe and I

  1266. rest my foot

  1267. on the world.

  1268. And so as

  1269. Habakkuk 2.20

  1270. says, the

  1271. Lord is

  1272. seated in

  1273. his holy

  1274. temple.

  1275. Let the

  1276. entire earth

  1277. be silent

  1278. before him.

  1279. In other

  1280. words, how

  1281. dare humanity

  1282. make God

  1283. in his own

  1284. image?

  1285. How dare we

  1286. decide that we

  1287. can give him

  1288. the crumbs

  1289. of our

  1290. life and

  1291. he'll be

  1292. just happy

  1293. with that

  1294. because he's

  1295. just a

  1296. gracious

  1297. God?

  1298. How dare we

  1299. determine what

  1300. discipleship looks

  1301. like?

  1302. How dare we

  1303. think we can

  1304. negotiate with

  1305. him about

  1306. levels of

  1307. commitment?

  1308. Visions of

  1309. all tend to

  1310. leave us

  1311. speechless

  1312. momentarily,

  1313. but not for

  1314. long.

  1315. God's glory

  1316. God's glory

  1317. is the

  1318. revealing

  1319. of his

  1320. holiness.

  1321. That's what

  1322. glory means

  1323. here.

  1324. God is

  1325. holy, the

  1326. whole earth

  1327. will see me

  1328. as glory.

  1329. Glorious.

  1330. God is

  1331. glorious means

  1332. that God's

  1333. holiness, his

  1334. divine being and

  1335. his character

  1336. have gone

  1337. public and

  1338. when it goes

  1339. public there is

  1340. only one

  1341. response.

  1342. Leviticus 10

    Leviticus 10:3

  1343. verse 3.

  1344. Among those

  1345. who approach

  1346. me I will

  1347. show myself

  1348. holy in the

  1349. sight of all

  1350. people I

  1351. will be

  1352. honoured.

  1353. When God

  1354. reveals his

  1355. glory to his

  1356. creatures the

  1357. response of

  1358. his creatures

  1359. is to give

  1360. glory, is

  1361. to acknowledge

  1362. what they have

  1363. seen.

  1364. Glory, praise,

  1365. adoration,

  1366. magnification.

  1367. To magnify

  1368. God is to

  1369. respond to

  1370. his magnificence.

  1371. We cannot

  1372. glorify God

  1373. without engaging

  1374. with his

  1375. holiness,

  1376. with his

  1377. character, with

  1378. his being, with

  1379. who he is.

  1380. You see, God

  1381. wants to be

  1382. praised for

  1383. his praise

  1384. worthiness,

  1385. magnified for

  1386. his greatness

  1387. and his

  1388. goodness.

  1389. He wants to

  1390. be appreciated

  1391. for who he

  1392. is.

  1393. God's glory

  1394. showing requires

  1395. glory giving

  1396. and this

  1397. is at the

  1398. very heart,

  1399. the very

  1400. heart of

  1401. true

  1402. fulfilment

  1403. for all of

  1404. God's creation

  1405. and especially

  1406. humanity.

  1407. glory giving

  1408. joy to

  1409. people as

  1410. we glorify

  1411. the glorious

  1412. God.

  1413. Now, here's

  1414. the kicker for

  1415. us.

  1416. The New

  1417. Testament

  1418. writers declare

  1419. that the public

  1420. display of God's

  1421. nature, his

  1422. character, his

  1423. power, his

  1424. purpose, his

  1425. grace, who he

  1426. is, has

  1427. gone public

  1428. for all

  1429. people to

  1430. see in the

  1431. person and

  1432. the role of

  1433. God's son,

  1434. Jesus Christ.

  1435. Now, in

  1436. John chapter

    John 12 chapter mention

  1437. 12, there's a

  1438. little verse

  1439. there that,

  1440. you know, you

  1441. do your daily

  1442. Bible reading and

  1443. you read straight

  1444. past this, you

  1445. wouldn't notice it

  1446. much.

  1447. But John

    John 12:41

  1448. chapter 12,

  1449. verse 41, is

  1450. very explicit on

  1451. this.

  1452. Isaiah said

  1453. this, because

  1454. it quotes from

  1455. Isaiah, and

  1456. then it says,

  1457. Isaiah said

  1458. this because

  1459. he saw

  1460. Jesus'

  1461. glory and

  1462. spoke about

  1463. him.

  1464. See what

  1465. John's saying

  1466. there?

  1467. John is saying

  1468. that Jesus

  1469. Christ is

  1470. who Isaiah

  1471. saw in

  1472. the throne

  1473. room of

  1474. Isaiah

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  1475. chapter 6.

  1476. That's who

  1477. he saw,

  1478. Jesus Christ.

  1479. And Jesus

  1480. is the one

  1481. who radiates,

  1482. reflects,

  1483. mirrors,

  1484. displays the

  1485. character, the

  1486. purpose, the

  1487. power and the

  1488. grace and the

  1489. magnificence of

  1490. our creator

  1491. God.

  1492. The

  1493. magnificence of

  1494. what went

  1495. public in

  1496. Jesus was

  1497. the plan,

  1498. the work of

  1499. grace whereby

  1500. he saves

  1501. sinners.

  1502. And

  1503. gathers them

  1504. to himself

  1505. as his

  1506. new people,

  1507. his new

  1508. humanity,

  1509. through his

  1510. death and

  1511. resurrection,

  1512. for his

  1513. glory,

  1514. for the

  1515. worship of

  1516. his honour.

  1517. He's a

  1518. magnificent

  1519. God.

  1520. But in

  1521. Jesus we

  1522. also see

  1523. he's a

  1524. gracious

  1525. God.

  1526. God's

  1527. glory reveals

  1528. that he's not

  1529. just magnificent,

  1530. but he's

  1531. gracious.

  1532. You see,

  1533. if my goal

  1534. in life was

  1535. to bring

  1536. glory to

  1537. myself,

  1538. which ironically

  1539. because of

  1540. sin it is,

  1541. but imagine

  1542. I existed in

  1543. my role here

  1544. at St.

  1545. Paul's,

  1546. your job is

  1547. to glorify

  1548. me.

  1549. We would

  1550. call that

  1551. narcissism,

  1552. we would

  1553. call that

  1554. egotism,

  1555. there's a

  1556. whole range

  1557. of things

  1558. we would

  1559. probably

  1560. call that.

  1561. And that's

  1562. because I

  1563. am neither

  1564. glorious nor

  1565. praiseworthy.

  1566. I'm like you,

  1567. I'm a human

  1568. being.

  1569. For God,

  1570. however,

  1571. it's not

  1572. egotism and

  1573. narcissism.

  1574. It doesn't

  1575. point ultimately

  1576. to God's

  1577. divine ego,

  1578. but to his

  1579. divine love.

  1580. That is,

  1581. his magnificence

  1582. is directed

  1583. towards love

  1584. for us.

  1585. God doing

  1586. everything for

  1587. his glory

  1588. is in fact

  1589. the foundation

  1590. of his love

  1591. for us.

  1592. God's

  1593. commitment

  1594. to his glory

  1595. means his

  1596. commitment to

  1597. love and

  1598. life for us,

  1599. forgiveness

  1600. and eternal

  1601. fame for

  1602. those who

  1603. live for

  1604. his glory.

  1605. But Isaiah

  1606. didn't see

  1607. this initially.

  1608. This vision

  1609. of God

  1610. produces in

  1611. Isaiah not

  1612. worship but

  1613. sheer terror

  1614. initially.

  1615. Have a look

  1616. there.

  1617. Woe to me,

  1618. I cried.

  1619. I am ruined

  1620. for I am a

  1621. man of unclean

  1622. lips and I

  1623. live among a

  1624. people of

  1625. unclean lips

  1626. and my eyes

  1627. have seen

  1628. the king,

  1629. the Lord

  1630. almighty.

  1631. Woe to

  1632. me.

  1633. Woe to

  1634. me are the

  1635. very first

  1636. words that

  1637. Isaiah speaks

  1638. in his

  1639. entire 66

  1640. chapter prophecy.

  1641. Woe to

  1642. me.

  1643. He pronounces

  1644. judgment upon

  1645. himself is his

  1646. first response

  1647. in seeing God

  1648. because he

  1649. acknowledges that

  1650. he himself is

  1651. unclean.

  1652. unclean.

  1653. The word

  1654. there unclean

  1655. is a general

  1656. term in the

  1657. Old Testament

  1658. for all that

  1659. is unfit to

  1660. be in God's

  1661. presence.

  1662. I'm not

  1663. worthy to

  1664. see this and

  1665. I'm not

  1666. worthy to be

  1667. here in his

  1668. presence.

  1669. And for the

  1670. very first

  1671. time Isaiah

  1672. sees that he

  1673. is typical of

  1674. his generation

  1675. whose faith

  1676. was unthinking,

  1677. was glib,

  1678. response to

  1679. God was just

  1680. rote.

  1681. Their mouths

  1682. were not filled

  1683. with worship

  1684. but with

  1685. flippant

  1686. repetitions and

  1687. self-justifying

  1688. excuses.

  1689. And now

  1690. Isaiah sees

  1691. his heart for

  1692. the first

  1693. time because

  1694. he sees God

  1695. for the first

  1696. time.

  1697. And something

  1698. wonderful happens.

  1699. A seraph

  1700. peels off

  1701. from his

  1702. flight path

  1703. around the

  1704. throne,

  1705. diving straight

  1706. for Isaiah.

  1707. He's

  1708. holding a

  1709. burning coal

  1710. that he has

  1711. taken from

  1712. the altar

  1713. with the

  1714. tongs.

  1715. But he's

  1716. taking it from

  1717. the altar

  1718. with tongs

  1719. not because

  1720. it's hot.

  1721. It's not

  1722. that.

  1723. He took

  1724. this coal

  1725. with tongs

  1726. because what

  1727. he has

  1728. taken is a

  1729. holy thing.

  1730. It's a

  1731. holy thing.

  1732. It belongs

  1733. to the place

  1734. of sacrifice.

  1735. and atonement

  1736. and forgiveness.

  1737. And with

  1738. it the

  1739. seraph flies

  1740. to Isaiah

  1741. and gets

  1742. this burning

  1743. coal and

  1744. it touches

  1745. his lips.

  1746. My immediate

  1747. response there

  1748. is to go

  1749. oh man

  1750. burn.

  1751. But not

  1752. with Isaiah.

  1753. It doesn't

  1754. hurt him.

  1755. It in fact

  1756. heals him.

  1757. The seraph

  1758. says to Isaiah

  1759. your guilt

  1760. is taken

  1761. away and

  1762. your sin

  1763. is atoned

  1764. for.

  1765. What we

  1766. must see

  1767. in the

  1768. context of

  1769. the whole

  1770. Bible is

  1771. that burning

  1772. coal right

  1773. there symbolizes

  1774. the finished

  1775. work of

  1776. Christ on

  1777. the cross

  1778. for you

  1779. and for

  1780. me.

  1781. Jesus is

  1782. the one

  1783. who went

  1784. to the

  1785. place of

  1786. sacrifice

  1787. for us.

  1788. His dying

  1789. love is

  1790. the only

  1791. power that

  1792. can awaken

  1793. people as

  1794. dead to

  1795. God as

  1796. we are

  1797. and his

  1798. death

  1799. heals

  1800. us.

  1801. What should

  1802. hurt us

  1803. has healed

  1804. us and

  1805. he comes

  1806. to us

  1807. today through

  1808. his word

  1809. by his

  1810. Holy Spirit

  1811. and he

  1812. says to

  1813. us again

  1814. and again

  1815. and again

  1816. your guilt

  1817. is taken

  1818. away,

  1819. your sin

  1820. is atoned

  1821. for,

  1822. welcome

  1823. into the

  1824. overwhelming

  1825. delight of

  1826. my presence

  1827. until one

  1828. day you

  1829. will be

  1830. there in

  1831. my actual

  1832. presence

  1833. physically

  1834. forever.

  1835. Which brings

  1836. us to the

  1837. last point

  1838. of treasuring

  1839. Jesus because

  1840. this is what

  1841. stands as

  1842. John said,

  1843. stands right

  1844. over this

  1845. church is why

  1846. this treasuring

  1847. Jesus is

  1848. our mission

  1849. statement,

  1850. it's why we

  1851. exist.

  1852. You see when

  1853. the magnitude

  1854. of God's

  1855. grace touches

  1856. Isaiah,

  1857. he's awakened

  1858. in that moment

  1859. to live for

  1860. God.

  1861. In that

  1862. moment,

  1863. God reveals

  1864. himself to

  1865. Isaiah,

  1866. Isaiah is

  1867. immediately

  1868. terrified,

  1869. sees his

  1870. guilt,

  1871. he's terrified,

  1872. his sin

  1873. is atoned

  1874. for and

  1875. he rises

  1876. to serve

  1877. God with

  1878. joy.

  1879. When God

  1880. says,

  1881. well,

  1882. okay,

  1883. so who

  1884. am I

  1885. going to

  1886. send now?

  1887. Pick

  1888. me,

  1889. pick

  1890. me.

  1891. Oh,

  1892. oh,

  1893. oh,

  1894. oh.

  1895. At least

  1896. one major

  1897. purpose in

  1898. God revealing

  1899. his glory

  1900. is for

  1901. us to

  1902. experience

  1903. his

  1904. compassion,

  1905. his mercy,

  1906. his grace,

  1907. and his

  1908. forgiveness

  1909. for our

  1910. joy.

  1911. And what

  1912. overflows

  1913. from that

  1914. is a

  1915. life lived

  1916. for the

  1917. glory of

  1918. Christ.

  1919. Service of

  1920. others.

  1921. Every other

  1922. glory that we

  1923. might have in

  1924. our world

  1925. gets diminished,

  1926. diminished,

  1927. diminished,

  1928. diminished.

  1929. You see,

  1930. to effectively

  1931. bring glory

  1932. to God,

  1933. it's got to

  1934. be so much

  1935. more than

  1936. just mere

  1937. external

  1938. behaviors.

  1939. Genuine

  1940. worship is

  1941. seeing God's

  1942. glory and

  1943. being moved

  1944. with all of

  1945. our life,

  1946. our

  1947. affections,

  1948. affections that

  1949. overflow with

  1950. singing and

  1951. praise and

  1952. thanksgiving and

  1953. living to

  1954. please God.

  1955. This God

  1956. wants us to

  1957. love him

  1958. according to

  1959. Deuteronomy

  1960. 6, 5.

  1961. He wants us

  1962. to light

  1963. ourselves in

  1964. him according

  1965. to Psalm

    Psalms 37:4

  1966. 37,

  1967. verse 4.

  1968. He wants us

  1969. to worship

  1970. him with

  1971. gladness

  1972. according to

  1973. Psalm 100.

  1974. In fact,

  1975. he condemns

  1976. dutiful

  1977. obedience where

  1978. there is no

  1979. gladness and

  1980. no joy in

  1981. him in

  1982. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 28:47

  1983. 28,

  1984. verse 47.

  1985. And that

  1986. is our

  1987. experience in

  1988. life.

  1989. I mean,

  1990. imagine I

  1991. was to buy

  1992. my wife

  1993. Nats and

  1994. flowers and

  1995. she is

  1996. overjoyed in

  1997. that moment.

  1998. She thanks me

  1999. for the

  2000. flowers.

  2001. Doesn't

  2002. happen that

  2003. much.

  2004. Just to

  2005. retrieve

  2006. something there,

  2007. she is away

  2008. for the

  2009. weekend,

  2010. so it's a

  2011. little bit

  2012. more than

  2013. flowers.

  2014. But imagine

  2015. in that

  2016. moment she

  2017. gets the

  2018. flowers,

  2019. oh, she

  2020. comes home

  2021. this afternoon.

  2022. Thank you,

  2023. thank you,

  2024. thank you.

  2025. And my

  2026. response to

  2027. her is,

  2028. don't mention

  2029. it, it's

  2030. my duty.

  2031. It's my

  2032. duty as a

  2033. husband.

  2034. It's what I

  2035. must do.

  2036. I must do

  2037. this.

  2038. I must

  2039. sacrifice my

  2040. money and

  2041. my time for

  2042. you.

  2043. I'm

  2044. assuming in

  2045. that moment

  2046. she's going

  2047. to be

  2048. offended in

  2049. some kind

  2050. of way.

  2051. It's an

  2052. insult to

  2053. her honour

  2054. and to

  2055. our

  2056. relationship.

  2057. She is

  2058. honoured when

  2059. I sacrifice

  2060. and I

  2061. give because

  2062. it's my

  2063. delight to

  2064. do so.

  2065. If it

  2066. is a

  2067. great

  2068. sacrifice

  2069. for us

  2070. to do

  2071. anything

  2072. for the

  2073. glory of

  2074. God,

  2075. it shows

  2076. that we

  2077. value

  2078. something

  2079. else more

  2080. than him.

  2081. It shows

  2082. us what

  2083. we value

  2084. more than

  2085. him.

  2086. If we

  2087. can't read

  2088. our

  2089. Bibles

  2090. because

  2091. I don't

  2092. have time

  2093. because of

  2094. the TV,

  2095. it's telling

  2096. me that my

  2097. comfort is

  2098. more valuable

  2099. than him

  2100. or my

  2101. entertainment

  2102. is more

  2103. valuable than

  2104. him.

  2105. When he

  2106. is our

  2107. greatest

  2108. treasure,

  2109. then choosing

  2110. him over

  2111. lesser things

  2112. is not

  2113. even a

  2114. sacrifice.

  2115. When we

  2116. delight in

  2117. his power,

  2118. in his

  2119. perfection,

  2120. in his

  2121. beauty,

  2122. in his

  2123. mercy,

  2124. then our

  2125. worship and

  2126. service of

  2127. him will

  2128. glorify him.

  2129. God is

  2130. dishonoured

  2131. when all of

  2132. our worship

  2133. is just

  2134. purely a

  2135. service to

  2136. him,

  2137. just done

  2138. as a

  2139. duty.

  2140. God is

  2141. God desires

  2142. to

  2143. see him.

  2144. That we

  2145. savour his

  2146. mercy and

  2147. his

  2148. forgiveness

  2149. and his

  2150. acceptance,

  2151. that we

  2152. serve him

  2153. with all of

  2154. our lives

  2155. with joy

  2156. and gladness.

  2157. God is

  2158. so let

  2159. me just

  2160. end very

  2161. briefly.

  2162. My

  2163. sense is,

  2164. as I said

  2165. at the

  2166. beginning of

  2167. this,

  2168. so many

  2169. of us are

  2170. struggling

  2171. right now.

  2172. Plans are

  2173. shifting so

  2174. fast.

  2175. people who

  2176. were signed

  2177. up to

  2178. serve today

  2179. are now

  2180. in isolation

  2181. and lockdown

  2182. because COVID

  2183. in their

  2184. families and

  2185. bang,

  2186. bang,

  2187. bang.

  2188. Last night,

  2189. this morning,

  2190. a number of

  2191. us are going

  2192. bang,

  2193. bang,

  2194. bang,

  2195. having to

  2196. make changes

  2197. shift.

  2198. Anything that

  2199. we got in

  2200. paper lined

  2201. up, it

  2202. just shifts.

  2203. And what

  2204. happens there

  2205. is constant

  2206. fatigue all

  2207. the time.

  2208. I've not

  2209. seen my

  2210. parents for

  2211. nearly two

  2212. and a

  2213. half years,

  2214. face to

  2215. face for

  2216. two and

  2217. a half

  2218. years,

  2219. because of

  2220. COVID.

  2221. And there's

  2222. a fear now

  2223. that if I

  2224. book a

  2225. ticket,

  2226. if the

  2227. airline doesn't

  2228. get cancelled,

  2229. I might get

  2230. cancelled because

  2231. of COVID.

  2232. And that if I

  2233. go there,

  2234. a rat test

  2235. may be

  2236. negative,

  2237. but I might

  2238. be positive

  2239. and give it

  2240. to...

  2241. I mean,

  2242. it's like

  2243. multitude of

  2244. decisions.

  2245. And so

  2246. many people

  2247. are struggling

  2248. right now.

  2249. Anxiety,

  2250. apathy is

  2251. just rising,

  2252. languishing.

  2253. I've spoken

  2254. about that

  2255. before.

  2256. So if you're

  2257. struggling right

  2258. now, or if

  2259. you're in a

  2260. rut spiritually,

  2261. maybe you're

  2262. steeped in sin.

  2263. Your one

  2264. prayer right

  2265. now should

  2266. be, help

  2267. me see

  2268. you.

  2269. Help me

  2270. see you.

  2271. I'm

  2272. captivated by

  2273. lesser

  2274. glories.

  2275. I want

  2276. things to

  2277. return that

  2278. they were

  2279. because to

  2280. me that

  2281. was glorious.

  2282. When I

  2283. could plan

  2284. my travel

  2285. and I

  2286. could plan

  2287. my life,

  2288. but now I

  2289. can't.

  2290. Captivate me

  2291. with your

  2292. glory as

  2293. you open

  2294. God's word.

  2295. And this

  2296. might be the

  2297. challenge for

  2298. every single

  2299. one of us

  2300. right now

  2301. and God's

  2302. word.

  2303. Your one

  2304. prayer might

  2305. be, as I

  2306. read your

  2307. word, help

  2308. me to see

  2309. your face

  2310. and to know

  2311. your presence.

  2312. I want to be

  2313. captivated by

  2314. you.

  2315. Thank you.

  2316. Thank you.

  2317. Thank you.

  2318. Thank you.

  2319. Thank you.

  2320. Thank you.

  2321. Thank you.

  2322. Thank you.

  2323. Thank you.

  2324. Thank you.
