  1. I think about food all the time.

  2. I didn't realize it, I've always suspected it,

  3. but I didn't realize it until recently

  4. when I started the spiritual discipline of fasting.

  5. I'm not sure if anybody here has fasted before

  6. or if you can remember doing the 40-hour famine.

  7. I did that years ago.

  8. But I spent a little bit of time fasting.

  9. I spent a day fasting where I only consumed liquids

  10. and used the time to focus my mind and my heart on praying to God.

  11. And it was really helpful.

  12. But I didn't realize how much I thought about food

  13. until I took the food away.

  14. Because I spent pretty much all day thinking about food.

  15. I would wake up and my first thought is, I need coffee.

  16. I don't know if anybody else here is like that.

  17. I'm desperate for coffee.

  18. And then it's breakfast.

  19. And then when I get to work, it's more coffee.

  20. And then when I'm working, I'm thinking,

  21. morning tea is coming up soon.

  22. I can't wait for morning tea.

  23. And then I have morning tea.

  24. And then it's like, how long till lunch?

  25. Lunch is certainly around the corner.

  26. Food, can't wait.

  27. And then I'll have the food.

  28. And then there's the afternoon snack.

  29. And there's another coffee with that often.

  30. And as soon as I get home,

  31. I'm thinking, all right, what's for dinner?

  32. And then after dinner is done, while I'm cleaning the kitchen,

  33. I'm looking around.

  34. Where's my little after dinner snack?

  35. I need some kind of dessert situation for me.

  36. Is there some kind of little treat?

  37. Taking a day out of eating and fasting

  38. actually helped me realize how much of my life is run by food,

  39. how much of my joy I get from food,

  40. how much wonder I place in my anticipation for eating.

  41. I was looking to food as this thing that would satisfy me,

  42. as this thing that I hold up with awe.

  43. We are all wired for awe.

  44. Now, awe is A-W-E, not the thing you row with, not O-R,

  45. but A-W-E, awe, which is reverence with fear and wonder.

  46. We all have awe for things, but also all have awe problems.

  47. Things that we worship and chase that aren't God,

  48. the one who is deserving of awe, all awe.

  49. And an issue for many of us is that we live in a material world,

  50. we are dependent on material things,

  51. and we end up holding these material things in awe.

  52. But nothing in our world can give us peace or meaning or purpose.

  53. And so what happens is street-level materialism captures our hearts

  54. and it eats up our time and energy and resources.

  55. For me, it was that issue of gluttony,

  56. not necessarily over-reading,

  57. but holding food in awe.

  58. We're all physical, material beings,

  59. and we need to consume to survive.

  60. But often we can chase consuming things

  61. instead of the one who gives us good things.

  62. Even for Christians,

  63. God, the one who we should be in awe of,

  64. we end up just being in awe of the things he gives us

  65. and chasing those.

  66. We all chase awe.

  67. Whether it is the child who has ice cream for the first time

  68. and they get that buzz of sugar and they're like,

  69. oh, this is amazing, I need that again.

  70. Whether it's the person going to an art gallery,

  71. seeing beautiful works of art and being in awe,

  72. or the person who climbs a mountain and looks at amazing vistas.

  73. We are all wired for awe,

  74. but awesome stuff doesn't satisfy.

  75. Only the one who is deserving of all awe does.

  76. We are in our Easter series,

  77. which is called Awe.

  78. As we head to Easter in two weeks' time,

  79. we're going to be reminded of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  80. But over these next couple of weeks,

  81. we'll be called to have awe in God,

  82. to direct our sense of wonder and fear and reverence

  83. back to the one who deserves it.

  84. And the challenge for us today as we start this series

  85. will be to be made aware of the material things

  86. that we have awe of

  87. and how we are to restore our awe of God.

  88. So as we seek to do this, let me pray for us.

  89. Heavenly Father, I thank you

  90. for all your many gifts that you give us.

  91. Thank you for sweetness of food and for wonderful views

  92. and that you have made us people who can enjoy these things.

  93. But Heavenly Father, make us aware of the things that distract us

  94. and take us away from being in awe of you, Lord,

  95. that we would see how awesome you are.

  96. Amen.

  97. Three points.

  98. This morning you can find those in the St. Paul's app

  99. as we go through this.

  100. And to help us as we seek to restore our awe of God,

  101. particularly the challenge of being people who consume things,

  102. today we're looking at the Lord's Supper,

  103. which Anne read for us this morning from Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  104. where Jesus commanded us to be consuming him

  105. in contrast to the things of the world for us.

  106. The Lord's Supper is Jesus' final meal with his disciples

  107. before he is taken and crucified,

  108. which we'll see in two weeks' time.

  109. Jesus knew he was about to be killed

  110. and he prepares his disciples

  111. as he's about to walk this road to his crucifixion.

  112. And so he gathers his disciples

  113. to celebrate the Passover together.

  114. And this meal is significant

  115. and we need to understand the Passover

  116. before we can understand the Lord's Supper.

  117. So Luke 22, we're going to start in verse 14.

  118. Have your Bibles open with me.

  119. Chapter 22, verse 14.

  120. When the hour came,

  121. Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table

  122. and he said to them,

  123. I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you

  124. before I suffer.

  125. For I tell you, I will not eat it again

  126. until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.

  127. Just to give us context of what the Passover is,

  128. the Passover was a meal that the Jews would eat every year

  129. to celebrate and to remember how God saved them from Egypt.

  130. God used Moses through 10 miracles

  131. to save the Israelites out of Egypt across the Red Sea.

  132. And the most significant aspect of the Passover

  133. was the final miracle or the final plague,

  134. where after nine plagues,

  135. God would show that he was powerful

  136. over Pharaoh and over the Egyptian gods.

  137. And God sent an angel to kill the firstborn,

  138. except for those who had sacrificed an animal,

  139. sacrificed a lamb,

  140. and put the blood of the lamb over their door.

  141. And so that day, God passed over those houses

  142. which had an animal sacrificed.

  143. And every year after that time,

  144. God's people would remember that day.

  145. They would remember that Passover.

  146. They would continue to do that with a special feast

  147. to remember what God did.

  148. And they would feast with lamb

  149. and bread made without yeast,

  150. with bitter herbs.

  151. And they would remember this feast

  152. and remember who their God was.

  153. They weren't remembering,

  154. so it slipped out of their memory,

  155. so they didn't just forget what happened.

  156. They were remembering it

  157. because of who God was.

  158. One of my favorite parts of being in Chatswood

  159. is learning about the different cultures around us

  160. and eating different foods.

  161. One of my favorite seasonal foods

  162. has been Eight Treasures Duck.

  163. I don't know if you've eaten that one.

  164. That's a really good one.

  165. There's another festival coming up

  166. that's celebrated as part of the,

  167. I think it's the Chinese calendar.

  168. It's the Dragon Boat Festival.

  169. Where historically they remember

  170. a famous poet called Chu Yuan

  171. who was celebrated by the people

  172. but committed suicide by jumping into a river.

  173. And so the people rowed their boats out

  174. as quickly as they could

  175. and they threw sticky balls of rice into the water

  176. so the fish would eat the rice

  177. and not the poet.

  178. And so that from that time

  179. we eat zongzi,

  180. these sticky balls of rice wrapped in,

  181. what are they wrapped in, John?

  182. Is it bamboo leaves?

  183. Banana.

  184. Banana leaves.

  185. Thank you.

  186. Bamboo leaves.

  187. Bamboo leaves.

  188. Okay, there's a fight going on here.

  189. So I know coming up on the 5th of May

  190. when we celebrate it,

  191. we're going to have different ones

  192. and we can all taste test to see what's best.

  193. And so we remember what happened.

  194. I think it was about 500 BC as well.

  195. So it's a while ago.

  196. And we have dragon boat races.

  197. Even coming up,

  198. I think it's coming up at the end of this month,

  199. there's Anzac Day

  200. where we remember those who fought in wars.

  201. But the original Passover

  202. wasn't just an event to be remembered.

  203. It wasn't even a time just to eat food

  204. and remember something.

  205. It wasn't just an interesting piece of history.

  206. It was something that continued.

  207. It was remembering who God is.

  208. A meal to celebrate God's character,

  209. that he is loving and he is forgiving.

  210. He is good.

  211. He is patient with his people.

  212. He has power to defeat the enemy

  213. and that God made a way

  214. to save his enemy through death.

  215. The people at the Passover

  216. remembered who God was

  217. back in the Passover,

  218. who he continues to be

  219. and who he would be in the future,

  220. that he would save his people.

  221. And Jesus is picking up that in Luke 22.

  222. He didn't just want his people

  223. to mark on the calendar,

  224. oh, this is when we have the meal with lamb

  225. and we have bitter herbs

  226. and we have to cook bread

  227. in this particular way.

  228. It was actually far more significant

  229. than just recalling an event.

  230. And so second point today,

  231. remembering and proclaiming the Lord's Supper,

  232. Jesus picks up on this

  233. that the Passover was more than

  234. just a historical event

  235. and he celebrates it in a new way.

  236. No longer is it about lamb

  237. and bread made without yeast

  238. and bitter herbs,

  239. but there's a new meal.

  240. There's a new way of celebrating.

  241. Verse 19.

  242. He took bread,

  243. he gave thanks and he broke it

  244. and he gave it to them saying,

  245. this is my body given for you.

  246. Do this in remembrance of me.

  247. In the same way,

  248. after the supper,

  249. he took the cup saying,

  250. this cup is the new covenant in my blood,

  251. which is poured out for you.

  252. Jesus gives the wine and bread

  253. as a new Passover meal.

  254. Jesus is the sheep.

  255. He's the one who's going to be sacrificed,

  256. but he is bringing in a new

  257. and everlasting covenant

  258. and there is a new way to remember it.

  259. And so today,

  260. when we celebrate the Lord's Supper or communion,

  261. which we'll do a little bit later,

  262. we're not just remembering

  263. something that happened 2000 years ago.

  264. We're not just remembering a historical event.

  265. We're not just calling it to mind.

  266. It's not just a feast.

  267. And I'm actually really thankful.

  268. I've got a hot cross bun here.

  269. You can't see it.

  270. I'll slide it over here for those on screen.

  271. I've got a hot cross bun.

  272. I've never used a hot cross bun in communion,

  273. but it's literally got a cross on it.

  274. So I think that is a wonderful bread to use

  275. to celebrate communion.

  276. But it's not just remembering a historical event

  277. that formed a cultural identity.

  278. We continue to participate in the Lord's Supper now.

  279. Jesus didn't just save us then.

  280. He is continuing to work now.

  281. When we celebrate the Lord's Supper,

  282. it is to be a wonderful ceremony for us

  283. where we adjust our lives based on what we remember.

  284. Because there's a number of things

  285. we celebrate in the Lord's Supper.

  286. When we celebrate the Lord's Supper,

  287. we remember Jesus' death for us.

  288. Our actions give us a picture of his death for us.

  289. When the bread is given out,

  290. we remember that Jesus' body was given for us.

  291. And when we hand out the juice

  292. and when we drink the juice,

  293. we're remembering that Jesus' blood was spilt

  294. instead of mine, instead of yours.

  295. We remember that when we get a benefit from his death,

  296. we get life as we participate.

  297. And it's not just an individual reminder

  298. that Jesus' death was for me.

  299. It's a corporate mind reminder.

  300. It is for us as a church.

  301. We are giving a clear sign that

  302. we don't do this just at our homes.

  303. We do this when we meet together.

  304. Because Jesus did die for me,

  305. but he died for you and he died for us.

  306. And so this is a family meal.

  307. The meal reminds us that Jesus loves us.

  308. And while we remember a historical event

  309. in the Lord's Supper,

  310. we continue to do it now

  311. as we look forward to the final meal,

  312. the feast with Jesus when he returns

  313. and we are with him forever.

  314. And what a feast that will be.

  315. And when we celebrate the Lord's Supper or communion,

  316. we affirm our dependence on Jesus.

  317. And we say,

  318. Jesus, I need you so much more than this food

  319. and this liquid.

  320. I need these things to survive

  321. for my body to continue to function.

  322. But I need you far more than that.

  323. I need you to forgive me.

  324. I need you to give me life

  325. because that's the only way I can have life.

  326. And so communion helps to remind us

  327. that we should be in awe of our God

  328. or a mixture of fear and wonder.

  329. Fear because the Lord's Supper reminds us

  330. of how deeply in need of him we are.

  331. And yet God in his goodness loves us.

  332. He makes a way for us.

  333. He brings salvation because of his great love for us.

  334. It is so much more than just a symbol

  335. of a historical event.

  336. It calls us to respond with our hearts,

  337. to continue to praise him

  338. as we look forward to the meal we will have.

  339. Paul talks about the Lord's Supper in 1 Corinthians 11.

  340. He says,

  341. for whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup,

  342. you proclaim the Lord's death.

  343. So when we actually eat this,

  344. when we drink this,

  345. we're actually preaching the gospel.

  346. We're saying we are in need of Jesus.

  347. You are in need of Jesus.

  348. And anybody who's watching at home,

  349. who's part of church online,

  350. we together are in need of him.

  351. We get to proclaim the good news of the gospel

  352. by eating and drinking together.

  353. And when we do this,

  354. when we remember our desperate need,

  355. it leads us to awe.

  356. It's our final point today.

  357. Communion or the Lord's Supper,

  358. it is for us.

  359. It's not just a practice

  360. that we legalistically follow.

  361. It's not just a routine.

  362. It's not just something we go through.

  363. There's actually a benefit for us.

  364. Now, there is nothing special

  365. about the juice or the wafer that we'll have.

  366. Now, the hot cross bun is a little bit special,

  367. but there's nothing more special about that

  368. than the ingredients in it.

  369. It doesn't physically become Jesus's body in communion,

  370. or it doesn't actually become his blood.

  371. But when we eat it,

  372. when we drink it,

  373. we're actively saying,

  374. Jesus, I depend upon you.

  375. I need you.

  376. I need you to die in my place.

  377. And I need you to have risen

  378. so that I have hope for tomorrow.

  379. Otherwise, I have no hope for tomorrow.

  380. And so when we feed on this food,

  381. we're feeding on him by faith.

  382. It's a reminder that we are physical and material,

  383. and we depend upon food,

  384. but we depend upon him so much more.

  385. I think it's also really wonderful

  386. that Jesus gave us food and wine

  387. to symbolize the new covenant,

  388. the new testament.

  389. Jesus could have replaced the Passover with anything.

  390. It could have been anything.

  391. It could have just been a prayer.

  392. It could have been an action.

  393. But he gave us a new meal

  394. because we are physical beings who consume things.

  395. And I think this is so helpful for us

  396. because this is just part of who we are

  397. and how we are wired as people.

  398. Tastes and smells trigger memories for us

  399. because this is how we're wired.

  400. I remember sitting in the back of the car as a kid

  401. on long family holidays

  402. and smelling my mum's perfume.

  403. So when I smell this particular perfume,

  404. it triggers these wonderful memories for me.

  405. Do you have these similar things?

  406. Maybe you smell something

  407. that reminds you of a family member.

  408. When you smell a particular type of food

  409. and it takes you back to your hometown.

  410. It's just the way our brains are wired.

  411. Our brain connects foods and smells to memories.

  412. And there's a longing of our heart.

  413. Jesus tells us to eat and drink

  414. in remembrance of him.

  415. It's just plain food we're having.

  416. Grape juice,

  417. a fairly plain wafer.

  418. But it is significant and special

  419. for our hearts and our souls.

  420. It connects deeply with who we are as people.

  421. And it's a wonderful moment to be reminded

  422. to be in awe of God.

  423. God, you are so good.

  424. You've loved me.

  425. You've provided for me.

  426. I can be in fear of you

  427. because you are so much bigger than me.

  428. I can wonder at you

  429. because I'm small and I'm in need of you.

  430. But you do provide.

  431. And we need this.

  432. And we need this regularly.

  433. Because we are also regularly consumed

  434. throughout the week by other things.

  435. We get distracted by things

  436. that we think will satisfy.

  437. I think it's been particularly hard

  438. for all of us in this season

  439. of COVID, post-COVID, lockdowns,

  440. just general anxieties about life.

  441. I had the wonderful privilege yesterday

  442. of marrying two people from our church,

  443. Jessica and Oscar.

  444. Got the chance to marry them.

  445. And that was a really wonderful occasion.

  446. There's a number of people of church there.

  447. But just walking with them

  448. as they were getting ready to be married,

  449. getting, I don't know

  450. if you've organized a wedding.

  451. I can't remember organizing mine.

  452. It was too long ago.

  453. There are so many things

  454. to organize in a wedding.

  455. Think about how many things

  456. you need to juggle

  457. organizing a wedding

  458. in a COVID season

  459. where people are pulling out

  460. and you don't know

  461. how many people can make it.

  462. And you're just juggling

  463. things upon things.

  464. I think we are just,

  465. as Steve mentioned recently,

  466. we're still in a season

  467. a season of languishing,

  468. a season of depression

  469. and anxiety.

  470. We're going through

  471. the normal motions

  472. and trying to do normal things,

  473. but they are hard

  474. and increasingly difficult.

  475. And worry comes into that,

  476. trying to plan, you know,

  477. anything.

  478. Our family has two school parties today

  479. and they've been canceled

  480. because of COVID

  481. and different things

  482. and the rain certainly

  483. hasn't helped.

  484. Plans get thrown into disarray

  485. and so our hearts

  486. can feel pulled

  487. to cynicism

  488. and worry

  489. and I'm not even going

  490. to look forward to anything.

  491. I'm not going to be

  492. in awe of anything

  493. because it's all too hard.

  494. And so maybe I won't plan

  495. for something

  496. because it's hard.

  497. And then not only

  498. do I not plan,

  499. I stop caring about

  500. what's coming up

  501. because it's all too hard.

  502. And so it's no wonder

  503. for me that I'm consuming

  504. more of my phone

  505. than I ever had before.

  506. I was really,

  507. I don't know about you guys,

  508. but I get a pop-up

  509. on my phone

  510. Sunday mornings

  511. just before church starts,

  512. which is always

  513. a wonderful rebuke for me.

  514. It tells me

  515. my average amount

  516. of hours on my phone.

  517. Does anybody want to tell me

  518. their average amount

  519. of hours on their phone?

  520. No, no.

  521. I was really excited

  522. this morning

  523. when I got my pop-up

  524. because it said mine

  525. was down

  526. to five and a half hours a day.

  527. Down to that many hours.

  528. And I was thankful

  529. but then just like,

  530. man, daddy,

  531. I'm still consuming

  532. so much of my phone.

  533. There's more TV

  534. to distract me

  535. of the challenges of life

  536. because the reality is

  537. me and you,

  538. we're chasing things

  539. to be in awe of.

  540. I need something wonderful.

  541. Do you know what?

  542. Not even wonderful,

  543. not even awesome.

  544. I just want something

  545. mildly okay

  546. to distract me.

  547. I'm not even chasing

  548. awesome things.

  549. into this season

  550. and into the challenges

  551. of life,

  552. Jesus calls us

  553. to restore our awe

  554. of him.

  555. Celebrating the Lord's Supper

  556. helps us to do that.

  557. But just the regular rhythm

  558. of church

  559. is also good for us.

  560. The regular rhythm

  561. of coming to church

  562. once a week,

  563. gathering,

  564. is really good for us.

  565. We need the weekly gathering

  566. of 60 to 90 minutes

  567. on a Sunday

  568. to restore our awe of God.

  569. I think it's indicative

  570. of how God made us to be

  571. on the seventh day.

  572. God rested.

  573. God instituted the Sabbath.

  574. It is part of who we are

  575. as physical beings.

  576. We need a weekly reminder

  577. that God is the one

  578. who we should be in awe of.

  579. He is the one

  580. we should be consuming

  581. and not the other things

  582. we need to consume

  583. and don't need to consume

  584. throughout the week.

  585. And every aspect of church

  586. in some way

  587. is restoring

  588. our awe of God.

  589. And so,

  590. as we get up

  591. to sing a song

  592. at the start of our service,

  593. at the end of our service,

  594. it's restoring our awe

  595. because we sing

  596. of how good our God is.

  597. Our singing

  598. calls us to connect

  599. deep theological truths

  600. with our heart

  601. and praise Him.

  602. Over our vision series,

  603. we've been hearing

  604. different people's testimony,

  605. what it means

  606. to be on their front line,

  607. what it means

  608. to be walking,

  609. following God

  610. in a difficult workplace.

  611. We're reminded

  612. by the awesome God

  613. that these people

  614. have been worshipping.

  615. And we get to say,

  616. I'm going to keep

  617. worshipping God.

  618. I'm going to keep

  619. being in awe of Him

  620. because I can see

  621. how it is in their life.

  622. When we sit under the Bible,

  623. when the Bible

  624. is read for us,

  625. we should be in awe

  626. that the God

  627. of the universe

  628. has made it

  629. so we can understand Him.

  630. He's given us words.

  631. He communicates

  632. as we communicate.

  633. He's given us words

  634. so we can understand Him.

  635. Then,

  636. when somebody,

  637. Steve,

  638. myself,

  639. somebody else

  640. gets up to preach,

  641. we get to see

  642. all kinds of wonderful

  643. things about God.

  644. His wisdom

  645. and His power.

  646. We get to see

  647. His glory,

  648. His perfection

  649. and holiness.

  650. His presence,

  651. His love,

  652. His sovereign control.

  653. Easter is coming up

  654. and we are reminded

  655. of His boundless grace

  656. to us

  657. that His Son

  658. would die

  659. for me

  660. and for you.

  661. Brothers and sisters,

  662. we live in a world

  663. that consumes

  664. so much

  665. and we're seeking

  666. to be captivated

  667. by something

  668. that is awesome

  669. but in our

  670. distraction,

  671. we forget the one

  672. that we stand in awe of.

  673. So a simple call,

  674. don't give up

  675. meeting together.

  676. Don't give up

  677. meeting together

  678. as a church.

  679. It's normal

  680. to miss a week

  681. of church.

  682. It's quite normal

  683. when a family member

  684. is isolated

  685. and it's a wonderful joy

  686. that we can do that online

  687. but when we miss

  688. a couple of weeks

  689. of church,

  690. we run the risk

  691. of getting out

  692. of the rhythm

  693. of being in awe

  694. of God

  695. and instead

  696. we consume

  697. the things

  698. of the material world

  699. and we think

  700. they will satisfy.

  701. you

  702. have a gift

  703. to have a

  704. song

  705. that

  706. you

  707. and

  708. as

  709. you

  710. have a

  711. tell

  712. you

  713. have a

  714. lish

  715. the

  716. one

  717. you

  718. have a

  719. that

  720. one

  721. one

  722. two

  723. one

  724. one

  725. and

  726. two

  727. one
