  1. Well, if you'd like to get your Bibles, turn to Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  2. I've lived in Chatswood now for just over 13 years, and I can still remember vividly

  3. my first experience of moving to Chatswood.

  4. One of those experiences was rain.

  5. Amazingly, rain for me was weird in Chatswood because it came from every direction.

  6. My experience was rain always came from the west until I moved here and it came from

  7. any direction, unpredictably.

  8. Secondly, I noticed the noise never stopped.

  9. Thirdly, I remember not being able to sleep well because it was so bright at night.

  10. I was wondering who had left lights on in the house.

  11. Light pollution is a very real thing, and it's a real thing in Chatswood.

  12. It's not good for sleeping, but it is good if you want to go for a walk at night and

  13. you've forgotten your torch.

  14. The major downside is we miss something that is so glorious and spectacular.

  15. I have never experienced the wonder glittering night sky in Chatswood.

  16. Never.

  17. In 13 years, never seen it here at all.

  18. You've got to go west to experience the wonder of the universe and to sense your smallness.

  19. I've never seen the Milky Way or a shooting star in Chatswood.

  20. Every light I see in the sky in Chatswood at night is on track to land at Sydney Airport.

  21. Or it's on flashing the top of a building of a crane or something like that.

  22. What makes the heavenly lights so bright is and so attractive is that it's set against the scene of the ink blackness of the sprawling universe.

  23. That's what makes them stand out and so glorious.

  24. The night, the brighter the stars, and it's the same with the gospel.

  25. It's the same with the core message of the Christian faith.

  26. Last week, Romans chapter 1, verses 16 and 17, we investigated the Apostle Paul's thesis in a nutshell about the Christian faith.

    Romans 1:16

  27. Why is that so glorious and spectacular?

  28. Why is that such great news?

  29. Why is receiving God's righteousness through Jesus Christ the only way to have a right standing with our creator God?

  30. We get the answer to that in verses 18 through to chapter 3, verse 20.

  31. What we have here is a devastating critique of human nature.

  32. It is a dark picture of humanity that shows us why we cannot earn, deserve, or attain righteousness ourselves.

  33. And yet it is against this spiritual backdrop of blackest night that the light of the good news of the gospel shines even brighter for us.

  34. So you've got an outline that will come up on the screen.

  35. Three major points.

  36. I'm going to kick off with revealing righteous anger.

  37. At the end of last week's text, it's as Paul's summary.

  38. His gospel nutshell, if you like, the heart of Christianity.

  39. He says, he writes here,

  40. I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.

  41. First to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

  42. For in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed.

  43. A righteousness that is by faith from first to last.

  44. First to last.

  45. Now in the original language, verse 18 begins with the word for.

  46. That is, it's connected, deeply connected.

  47. It flows directly on from verse 17.

  48. The connection is showing us that the gospel is necessary.

  49. Not just simply to make us happy or in John Piper's words, to give us a ticket out of hell.

  50. It is necessary because we have a big, big problem that needs to be resolved.

  51. And Paul's confidence, joy, and passion for the good news is resting on the assumption

  52. that all human beings, apart from Jesus, are under the righteous, justified anger of their creator God.

  53. Without a clear understanding of God's righteous anger,

  54. then the gift of his righteousness to us in Jesus will never thrill us,

  55. will never empower us, and it will never transform us.

  56. God's anger against human sin is a settled, fair, right, and a present reality.

  57. In verse 18, we are told that God's wrath is being revealed.

  58. It doesn't say that it will be revealed, but that it is being revealed.

  59. It's a reality now.

  60. And so it prompts two questions.

  61. The why question and the how question.

  62. Why is it being revealed and how is it being revealed?

  63. Verse 18 tells us that God is angry because of humanity's godlessness and wickedness.

  64. Godlessness is a word that summarizes, if you like,

  65. a disregard for God and a breaking of relationship with him.

  66. Wickedness is a word that summarizes disregard for people and breaking relationship with people.

  67. That is, it captures both our vertical and horizontal relationships.

  68. Mark chapter 12, verses 29 to 31 tells us the greatest commandment.

    Mark 12:29–31

  69. It's to love God, love people, vertical and horizontal.

  70. Verses 19 and 20 says that the breaking of relationship with God and with people

  71. is something that all of us are responsible for.

  72. Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them,

  73. for since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities,

  74. his eternal power and his divine nature have been clearly seen,

  75. being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

  76. So the beginning of verse 21 goes as far as saying that all human beings,

  77. everywhere and at all times, know God.

  78. They know God.

  79. God has made himself plain to them since and in the creation of the world.

  80. God reveals a God of eternal power, a being of divine nature,

  81. a God to whom we are utterly dependent and completely accountable.

  82. Now, creation doesn't reveal everything that we need to know about God.

  83. God is not.

  84. But it's not hard to conclude that if the universe is great,

  85. then there is something greater that is behind that universe.

  86. It philosophically does not work to hold to the view

  87. that there is a spectacular universe that happened by accident.

  88. It does not philosophically work to say that a God of order does not exist,

  89. but to point to scientific evidence at the same time.

  90. Scientific evidence works on the assumption of order and not chaos.

  91. But I'm not here to argue all those points.

  92. Verse 18 says that we suppress that truth.

  93. If we suppress that truth,

  94. we will never understand who we are

  95. or why the world is as it is.

  96. And so Paul says we are without excuse.

  97. As verse 21 says,

  98. every human knows God,

  99. but no human glorifies God or gives thanks to him.

  100. That is, God's issue with humanity

  101. is not so much that we're rude

  102. and that we've got bad manners.

  103. You know, I'm really cranky with people

  104. because they forgot to say please and thank you and pardon me.

  105. It's not that.

  106. The issue is that we are glory stealers.

  107. We are glory stealers.

  108. We take what God has made

  109. and we pass it off as if it's our own.

  110. Ours.

  111. Which really is another way of saying

  112. that we don't acknowledge our dependence upon our creator

  113. and we claim independence instead.

  114. We live under the illusion

  115. that we call the shots

  116. and that we can decide what is right

  117. and what is wrong.

  118. What's interesting in these verses

  119. is what it says

  120. about how we practice

  121. this suppression of the knowledge of God.

  122. We push it down.

  123. We hold it down.

  124. We are people

  125. made in the image of God

  126. and we are made to worship God.

  127. And when we reject God,

  128. we don't by nature stop worshipping.

  129. We transfer our worship to another thing.

  130. That's what we do.

  131. We simply shift at the object of our worship.

  132. Have a look at verse 23.

  133. They exchanged.

  134. It's a key word here in this text.

  135. Exchanged the glory of the immortal God

  136. for images made to look like a mortal human being

  137. and birds and animals and reptiles.

  138. It's there again in verse 25.

  139. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie

  140. and worshipped and served,

  141. created things rather than the creator.

  142. So people are created for worship

  143. and if they don't worship their creator God,

  144. then they worship something else.

  145. They don't stop worshipping.

  146. They just worship something else.

  147. There must be something which captures our attention,

  148. which shapes our hope

  149. and in which we put our security.

  150. It becomes our centre of our being.

  151. This thing we must have

  152. for our sense of validation

  153. and for our worth

  154. and whatever it is, we serve it.

  155. You can generally tell what it is

  156. because when I kick it for you,

  157. you get angry.

  158. When someone challenges it in any kind of way,

  159. your response is an angry response.

  160. We give ultimate affection

  161. to a created and a good thing

  162. rather than the God who alone

  163. is worthy of ultimate affection

  164. and ultimate worship.

  165. Rather than worshipping the immortal,

  166. we worship what he has made.

  167. That's why he is angry

  168. against humanity.

  169. But Paul also explains

  170. how God's anger is being revealed

  171. in the present here.

  172. Verse 24.

  173. Therefore, God gave them over

  174. in the sinful desires of their hearts.

  175. The two words sinful desires there

  176. in verse 24

  177. comes from a single word

  178. in the original New Testament language

  179. which literally means an over desire.

  180. An over desire.

  181. That is,

  182. it means an all controlling drive

  183. and longing and passion.

  184. The main issue for us

  185. is not so much

  186. that we have desires

  187. for evil and bad things,

  188. but that we have over desires

  189. for created good things.

  190. Over desires.

  191. Controlling passions for those things.

  192. We turn good,

  193. created things

  194. into ultimate God things.

  195. We go from good things

  196. to God things.

  197. We just take an O out

  198. is what we do.

  199. They go from being good things

  200. to God things.

  201. And those good things,

  202. when they become God things,

  203. turn into being evil things,

  204. bad things,

  205. destructive things.

  206. The worst thing that can happen to us

  207. is to be given

  208. what our hearts desire

  209. if it's not God.

  210. As Oscar Wilde,

  211. not a Christian himself,

  212. summed it up well,

  213. when the gods wish to punish us,

  214. they answer our prayers.

  215. They answer our prayers.

  216. God's judgment on godlessness

  217. and wickedness

  218. is to give us

  219. what we want.

  220. And that ultimately

  221. is the picture of hell.

  222. Every person who will be there

  223. will want to be there.

  224. It's what we have chosen

  225. for ourselves.

  226. Since our hearts

  227. were made to be centered

  228. on God

  229. and since he is our creator

  230. and our provider,

  231. the provider of our satisfaction

  232. and our significance

  233. and our identity,

  234. every alternative

  235. that we set our hearts on

  236. ultimately will not satisfy us.

  237. God gives us over

  238. to whatever it is

  239. that we have exchanged

  240. worship of God for

  241. and we will worship

  242. and we will serve those things.

  243. They will control us

  244. because they are not God

  245. and they will control us

  246. because they are not God.

  247. They will never satisfy us.

  248. They are created things.

  249. They are less than us

  250. and they will always control us.

  251. They will enslave us.

  252. We will always want more.

  253. The tragedy of humanity

  254. of which I am one.

  255. I want you to be clear about this.

  256. I am deeply in this text.

  257. The tragedy of my life

  258. and your life

  259. and humanity

  260. is we strive for

  261. and we fail to find

  262. in creation

  263. what we could simply receive

  264. and enjoy

  265. from our creator.

  266. We suppress the truth

  267. which would free

  268. and satisfy us.

  269. But the tragedy is

  270. what the heart loves

  271. the will chooses

  272. and the mind justifies.

  273. What the heart loves

  274. the will chooses

  275. and the mind justifies.

  276. Secondly

  277. revealing the consequences of sin

  278. until verse 24

  279. Paul's been focusing

  280. on humanity's

  281. vertical relationship

  282. with their creator.

  283. While not everything

  284. about him

  285. is obvious

  286. from creation

  287. he has made

  288. his presence

  289. and his power

  290. known in the fabric

  291. of what he has made.

  292. Sin

  293. is where

  294. instead of

  295. honouring him

  296. by living

  297. independent

  298. gratitude

  299. we suppress the truth

  300. and we give honour

  301. to created things.

  302. But sin

  303. doesn't just ruin

  304. relationship with God

  305. it ruins

  306. everything else

  307. as well.

  308. Damaging our

  309. vertical relationships

  310. with God

  311. also damages

  312. our horizontal

  313. relationships

  314. with people.

  315. As I said previously

  316. and I'll say it again

  317. the word exchanged

  318. is key

  319. in understanding

  320. what sin is

  321. in verse 23

  322. and 25

  323. we exchange

  324. the created God

  325. for created things

  326. we make those things

  327. our God

  328. instead

  329. that is

  330. what we have here

  331. is an upheaval

  332. of the created order

  333. this exchanging

  334. and disordering

  335. of creation

  336. continues

  337. because of our

  338. fractured relationship

  339. with God

  340. it flows on

  341. from there

  342. and so in verses

  343. 26 and 27

  344. because of this

  345. God gave them

  346. over to shameful lust

  347. even their women

  348. exchanged

  349. natural sexual relations

  350. for unnatural ones

  351. in the same way

  352. the men also

  353. abandoned

  354. natural relations

  355. with women

  356. and were inflamed

  357. with lust

  358. for one another

  359. men committed

  360. shameful acts

  361. with other men

  362. and received

  363. in themselves

  364. the due penalty

  365. for their error

  366. and this is one

  367. of the more

  368. controversial passages

  369. in the Bible

  370. it's the longest

  371. passage on the Bible

  372. on the issue

  373. of homosexuality

  374. let me say

  375. that more recently

  376. many have attempted

  377. to suggest

  378. that the

  379. historic

  380. traditional

  381. understanding

  382. of these verses

  383. has been mistaken

  384. for instance

  385. there is a suggestion

  386. that these verses

  387. refer to people

  388. who act against

  389. their own nature

  390. rather than

  391. the nature

  392. however

  393. there's a number

  394. of pushbacks

  395. against that

  396. the reference

  397. to unnatural

  398. relations

  399. in verses 26

  400. and 27

  401. is literally

  402. against nature

  403. against nature

  404. in the original

  405. language

  406. that is

  407. homosexual practice

  408. and I'm talking

  409. about practice

  410. here

  411. not orientation

  412. homosexual practice

  413. is a violation

  414. of the nature

  415. the created

  416. nature of God

  417. Paul does not

  418. here

  419. state

  420. these people

  421. exchanged

  422. their nature

  423. their orientation

  424. that is

  425. they're not going

  426. against their

  427. personal orientation

  428. the nature

  429. of their personal

  430. orientation

  431. but they are

  432. going against

  433. the nature

  434. of sexual

  435. functioning

  436. there is no

  437. reference here

  438. to natural

  439. or unnatural

  440. feelings

  441. it is to

  442. natural

  443. and unnatural

  444. function

  445. that's the

  446. reference

  447. and the context

  448. matters too

  449. Paul is outlining

  450. here

  451. a scathing

  452. critique

  453. of pagan

  454. society

  455. as a whole

  456. he's not

  457. referring here

  458. to the sexual

  459. preferences

  460. of some

  461. members

  462. of that

  463. society

  464. but society

  465. as a whole

  466. he's addressing

  467. human nature

  468. and not the

  469. nature of

  470. certain

  471. individuals

  472. he's not

  473. judging

  474. sexual

  475. immorality

  476. on the

  477. basis

  478. of an

  479. inner

  480. disposition

  481. of the

  482. individual

  483. but in

  484. accordance

  485. with

  486. biblical

  487. revelation

  488. on the

  489. natural

  490. functioning

  491. of humans

  492. from

  493. created

  494. order

  495. now

  496. some

  497. have

  498. suggested

  499. that the

  500. word

  501. nature

  502. here

  503. means

  504. convention

  505. meaning

  506. that

  507. it's

  508. against

  509. the

  510. generally

  511. accepted

  512. practice

  513. in

  514. certain

  515. times

  516. and certain

  517. places

  518. that is

  519. it's

  520. against

  521. the

  522. cultural

  523. practice

  524. of Paul's

  525. day and

  526. age

  527. so it's

  528. against

  529. the

  530. society's

  531. acceptance

  532. of it

  533. the reality

  534. is that

  535. is just

  536. a misreading

  537. of

  538. entire

  539. misreading

  540. of history

  541. he is

  542. arguing

  543. against

  544. homosexual

  545. practice

  546. not because

  547. it was

  548. accepted

  549. culturally

  550. unacceptable

  551. culturally

  552. then

  553. homosexual

  554. practice

  555. was

  556. acceptable

  557. practice

  558. in his

  559. day and

  560. age

  561. he is

  562. writing

  563. this letter

  564. from

  565. Corinth

  566. sin

  567. city

  568. people

  569. had

  570. sex

  571. in

  572. the

  573. streets

  574. in

  575. broad

  576. daylight

  577. he is

  578. writing

  579. from

  580. here

  581. where

  582. it

  583. was

  584. both

  585. acceptable

  586. in

  587. Corinth

  588. and

  589. in

  590. the

  591. Roman

  592. Empire

  593. to

  594. have

  595. both

  596. a

  597. wife

  598. and

  599. your

  600. family

  601. and

  602. a

  603. homosexual

  604. lover

  605. at

  606. the

  607. same

  608. time

  609. openly

  610. another

  611. argument

  612. is that

  613. Paul is

  614. only

  615. referring

  616. here to

  617. promiscuous

  618. homosexual

  619. practice

  620. and not

  621. against

  622. long-term

  623. settled

  624. relationships

  625. long-term

  626. settled

  627. relationships

  628. homosexual

  629. relationships

  630. in the

  631. Roman

  632. Empire

  633. was also

  634. acceptable

  635. practice

  636. it was

  637. culturally

  638. acceptable

  639. and there

  640. is nothing

  641. in this

  642. text that

  643. suggests

  644. even for

  645. a moment

  646. that he

  647. only has

  648. certain

  649. practice

  650. in mind

  651. and not

  652. others

  653. Paul

  654. had

  655. access

  656. to

  657. language

  658. to

  659. distinguish

  660. between

  661. certain

  662. things

  663. and

  664. certain

  665. practices

  666. in his

  667. day

  668. access

  669. to

  670. language

  671. that

  672. Greek

  673. philosophers

  674. like

  675. Plato

  676. themselves

  677. used

  678. to

  679. distinguish

  680. Paul

  681. doesn't

  682. use

  683. any

  684. of

  685. them

  686. here

  687. even

  688. though

  689. he

  690. had

  691. access

  692. to

  693. all

  694. of

  695. it

  696. all

  697. of

  698. it

  699. if

  700. he

  701. had

  702. certain

  703. practices

  704. in

  705. mind

  706. he

  707. could

  708. have

  709. easily

  710. had

  711. access

  712. to

  713. that

  714. language

  715. and

  716. implanted

  717. in

  718. the

  719. text

  720. and

  721. he

  722. doesn't

  723. as a

  724. cultured

  725. and

  726. travelled

  727. Roman

  728. citizen

  729. Paul

  730. would

  731. have

  732. been

  733. very

  734. familiar

  735. with

  736. long

  737. term

  738. stable

  739. loving

  740. relationships

  741. between

  742. same

  743. sex

  744. couples

  745. and

  746. yet

  747. that

  748. does

  749. not

  750. stop

  751. him

  752. here

  753. from

  754. identifying

  755. them

  756. as

  757. not

  758. the

  759. creator's

  760. intention

  761. for

  762. human

  763. flourishing

  764. Paul

  765. is

  766. saying

  767. here

  768. is a

  769. way

  770. in

  771. which

  772. God

  773. has

  774. in

  775. his

  776. righteous

  777. settled

  778. just

  779. anger

  780. for

  781. human

  782. sin

  783. given

  784. people

  785. over

  786. to

  787. over

  788. desires

  789. and

  790. to

  791. experience

  792. its

  793. consequences

  794. and

  795. that

  796. is

  797. how

  798. the

  799. end

  800. of

  801. verse

  802. 27

  803. should

  804. be

  805. understood

  806. the

  807. reference

  808. there

  809. to

  810. due

  811. penalty

  812. for

  813. their

  814. error

  815. in

  816. verse

  817. 27

  818. is

  819. just

  820. really

  821. simply

  822. the

  823. reaping

  824. of

  825. the

  826. results

  827. of

  828. exchanging

  829. God

  830. for a

  831. lesser

  832. thing

  833. which

  834. is a

  835. biblical

  836. definition

  837. of

  838. idolatry

  839. the

  840. due

  841. penalty

  842. for

  843. their

  844. error

  845. is the

  846. consequence

  847. of

  848. idolatry

  849. this

  850. means

  851. that

  852. whatever

  853. due

  854. penalty

  855. is

  856. in

  857. verse

  858. 27

  859. it

  860. is

  861. not

  862. restricted

  863. to

  864. homosexual

  865. practice

  866. the

  867. due

  868. penalty

  869. stuff

  870. in

  871. verse

  872. 27

  873. is

  874. not

  875. restricted

  876. to

  877. homosexual

  878. practice

  879. this

  880. is

  881. due

  882. penalty

  883. for

  884. all

  885. sin

  886. all

  887. human

  888. beings

  889. suffer

  890. the

  891. due

  892. penalty

  893. for

  894. the

  895. rejection

  896. of

  897. God

  898. and

  899. we

  900. carry

  901. it

  902. in

  903. our

  904. lives

  905. every

  906. day

  907. now

  908. the

  909. Bible

  910. is

  911. clear

  912. and

  913. I'm

  914. very

  915. mindful

  916. this

  917. is a

  918. politically

  919. charged

  920. subject

  921. and it's

  922. not just

  923. politically

  924. charged

  925. it is

  926. deeply

  927. pastoral

  928. and

  929. personal

  930. for

  931. many

  932. people

  933. including

  934. dear

  935. friends

  936. of

  937. mine

  938. the

  939. Bible

  940. is

  941. clear

  942. both

  943. in

  944. the

  945. Old

  946. Testament

  947. and

  948. the

  949. New

  950. Testament

  951. that

  952. practicing

  953. homosexual

  954. sex

  955. as a

  956. settled

  957. unrepentant

  958. pattern of

  959. behaviour

  960. is indicative

  961. of an

  962. attitude

  963. of rejection

  964. of Jesus

  965. Lordship

  966. and

  967. according

  968. to

  969. 1

  970. Corinthians

  971. 6

  972. this

  973. leaves

  974. a

  975. person

  976. outside

  977. of

  978. his

  979. kingdom

  980. but

  981. hear me

  982. say

  983. this

  984. never

  985. ever

  986. outside

  987. of his

  988. reach

  989. of his

  990. mercy

  991. never

  992. now

  993. there's

  994. much more

  995. that could

  996. be said

  997. on this

  998. subject

  999. but I do

  1000. want to

  1001. make two

  1002. observations

  1003. lengthy

  1004. observations

  1005. firstly

  1006. notice that

  1007. the first

  1008. thing that

  1009. Paul

  1010. highlights

  1011. in these

  1012. verses

  1013. is

  1014. heterosexual

  1015. sex

  1016. is that

  1017. all

  1018. sex

  1019. outside

  1020. of a

  1021. biblical

  1022. definition

  1023. of

  1024. marriage

  1025. in

  1026. verse

  1027. 24

  1028. is

  1029. sin

  1030. and he

  1031. says that

  1032. before he

  1033. gets to

  1034. homosexual

  1035. sex

  1036. in verses

  1037. 26 and

  1038. 27

  1039. that is

  1040. both

  1041. result

  1042. in

  1043. and are

  1044. an

  1045. outworking

  1046. of

  1047. God's

  1048. giving

  1049. over

  1050. in

  1051. judgment

  1052. all

  1053. forms

  1054. of

  1055. sex

  1056. outside

  1057. of a

  1058. marriage

  1059. covenant

  1060. between a

  1061. man and a

  1062. woman

  1063. are in

  1064. view

  1065. here

  1066. not just

  1067. some

  1068. all

  1069. all

  1070. are a

  1071. form of

  1072. exchanging

  1073. God's

  1074. good

  1075. order

  1076. and

  1077. are

  1078. therefore

  1079. idolatry

  1080. and all

  1081. result

  1082. in

  1083. due

  1084. penalty

  1085. let me

  1086. take this

  1087. a bit

  1088. further

  1089. on this

  1090. issue

  1091. elsewhere

  1092. in his

  1093. letters

  1094. Paul

  1095. mentions

  1096. other

  1097. examples

  1098. of

  1099. idolatrous

  1100. behaviour

  1101. he doesn't

  1102. just think

  1103. of sex

  1104. as idolatrous

  1105. behaviour

  1106. other

  1107. examples

  1108. of idolatrous

  1109. behaviour

  1110. for instance

  1111. in

  1112. Colossians

    Colossians 3:5

  1113. 3

  1114. verse 5

  1115. he calls

  1116. greed

  1117. idolatry

  1118. that is

  1119. greed

  1120. is an

  1121. over

  1122. desire

  1123. for more

  1124. more

  1125. my sense

  1126. of worth

  1127. validation

  1128. is in

  1129. my bank

  1130. accounts

  1131. and my

  1132. possessions

  1133. that is

  1134. greed

  1135. is just

  1136. as

  1137. indicative

  1138. of

  1139. idolatry

  1140. and a

  1141. giving over

  1142. as sexual

  1143. immorality

  1144. is

  1145. I'll go

  1146. even further

  1147. Galatians

    Galatians 4:8

  1148. 4

  1149. verses

  1150. 8

  1151. and 9

  1152. Paul

  1153. addresses

  1154. Christians

  1155. who have

  1156. been pagans

  1157. before they

  1158. became

  1159. Christians

  1160. in Jesus

  1161. and who

  1162. are now

  1163. tempted

  1164. to take

  1165. on

  1166. Jewish

  1167. religious

  1168. laws

  1169. in order

  1170. to be

  1171. saved

  1172. this is

  1173. what he

  1174. says

  1175. formally

  1176. when you

  1177. did not

  1178. know

  1179. God

  1180. you were

  1181. slaves

  1182. to those

  1183. who by

  1184. nature

  1185. are not

  1186. gods

  1187. but now

  1188. that you

  1189. know

  1190. God

  1191. or rather

  1192. are known

  1193. by God

  1194. how is it

  1195. that you

  1196. are turning

  1197. back to

  1198. those

  1199. weak

  1200. and miserable

  1201. forces

  1202. do you

  1203. think

  1204. do you

  1205. wish to

  1206. be enslaved

  1207. by them

  1208. all over

  1209. again

  1210. Paul's

  1211. point

  1212. there

  1213. is

  1214. that the

  1215. seeking

  1216. of blessing

  1217. and salvation

  1218. through

  1219. biblical

  1220. morality

  1221. through

  1222. religious

  1223. practice

  1224. is

  1225. just

  1226. as much

  1227. of an

  1228. idolatry

  1229. as

  1230. greed

  1231. and

  1232. sexual

  1233. immorality

  1234. we

  1235. worship

  1236. whatever

  1237. we think

  1238. will give

  1239. us a

  1240. sense

  1241. of

  1242. identity

  1243. worth

  1244. validation

  1245. and a

  1246. sense

  1247. of

  1248. fulfillment

  1249. if we

  1250. do not

  1251. worship

  1252. our

  1253. creator

  1254. God

  1255. then we

  1256. will

  1257. worship

  1258. something

  1259. else

  1260. it could

  1261. well be

  1262. sexual

  1263. gratification

  1264. increasing

  1265. our wealth

  1266. and our

  1267. possessions

  1268. or

  1269. practicing

  1270. religion

  1271. the point

  1272. is

  1273. none of

  1274. these

  1275. things

  1276. and this

  1277. is absolutely

  1278. essential

  1279. for us

  1280. to get

  1281. none of

  1282. these

  1283. things

  1284. are

  1285. more

  1286. or

  1287. less

  1288. serious

  1289. than

  1290. the

  1291. others

  1292. this

  1293. leads me

  1294. to the

  1295. second

  1296. observation

  1297. while

  1298. I want

  1299. to

  1300. declare

  1301. that

  1302. homosexual

  1303. practice

  1304. is a

  1305. sin

  1306. with

  1307. all

  1308. sexual

  1309. immorality

  1310. as a

  1311. sin

  1312. it is

  1313. not the

  1314. worst

  1315. sin

  1316. it is

  1317. not the

  1318. worst

  1319. sin

  1320. all

  1321. sexual

  1322. immorality

  1323. is

  1324. sinful

  1325. including

  1326. you

  1327. married

  1328. men

  1329. who are

  1330. engaged

  1331. in

  1332. pornography

  1333. it's

  1334. sinful

  1335. sexual

  1336. immorality

  1337. and

  1338. Paul

  1339. will in

  1340. a moment

  1341. go on

  1342. and list

  1343. a whole

  1344. bunch

  1345. of sins

  1346. in the

  1347. following

  1348. verses

  1349. and he

  1350. calls

  1351. all of

  1352. these

  1353. acts

  1354. wickedness

  1355. that flow

  1356. out of

  1357. rejection

  1358. of the

  1359. truth

  1360. of God

  1361. so

  1362. friends

  1363. what I

  1364. want to

  1365. do

  1366. here

  1367. the

  1368. line

  1369. I

  1370. want us

  1371. to walk

  1372. as a

  1373. church

  1374. is to

  1375. have such

  1376. confidence

  1377. in God

  1378. and his

  1379. word

  1380. that we

  1381. call sin

  1382. what he

  1383. calls sin

  1384. I do

  1385. want to

  1386. avoid the

  1387. error of

  1388. some

  1389. churches

  1390. possibly

  1391. for some

  1392. in a

  1393. desire for

  1394. relevance

  1395. and to

  1396. be welcoming

  1397. and loving

  1398. for those

  1399. of the

  1400. homosexual

  1401. community

  1402. and others

  1403. and I

  1404. embrace

  1405. that idea

  1406. but what

  1407. they've done

  1408. in that

  1409. they have

  1410. downplayed

  1411. or denied

  1412. the clear

  1413. teaching of

  1414. scripture

  1415. on this

  1416. issue

  1417. I also

  1418. at the

  1419. same time

  1420. want to

  1421. avoid the

  1422. error of

  1423. those who

  1424. take the

  1425. Bible

  1426. seriously

  1427. on

  1428. homosexuality

  1429. but do

  1430. so

  1431. from a

  1432. very

  1433. self

  1434. righteous

  1435. way

  1436. for them

  1437. this is

  1438. the sin

  1439. that really

  1440. matters

  1441. they may

  1442. not do it

  1443. overtly

  1444. and you

  1445. may not do

  1446. it overtly

  1447. but they

  1448. speak and

  1449. live

  1450. as if

  1451. this is

  1452. it

  1453. this is

  1454. the sin

  1455. they do

  1456. not seek

  1457. to love

  1458. and welcome

  1459. gay people

  1460. but they

  1461. seek to

  1462. love and

  1463. get alongside

  1464. their Hindu

  1465. neighbours

  1466. or their

  1467. friends who

  1468. are committing

  1469. adultery

  1470. or some

  1471. other sexual

  1472. sin

  1473. Romans 1

  1474. is not

  1475. doing either

  1476. of those

  1477. things here

  1478. Paul is

  1479. not saying

  1480. it doesn't

  1481. matter what

  1482. you do

  1483. God's

  1484. okay with

  1485. it so

  1486. get along

  1487. with it

  1488. and be

  1489. happy

  1490. he's not

  1491. saying that

  1492. but he's

  1493. also not

  1494. saying what

  1495. you do

  1496. matters so

  1497. much

  1498. that I

  1499. don't want

  1500. to love

  1501. you

  1502. I don't

  1503. want to

  1504. witness

  1505. to you

  1506. and if

  1507. you are

  1508. somehow

  1509. that's as if

  1510. somehow you're

  1511. beyond the

  1512. gospel

  1513. or that you're

  1514. beyond God's

  1515. mercy

  1516. or you're

  1517. beyond the

  1518. welcoming and

  1519. embracing

  1520. of the local

  1521. church

  1522. can I say

  1523. that you

  1524. can always

  1525. tell if the

  1526. latter is

  1527. ultimately your

  1528. attitude

  1529. because you

  1530. will see

  1531. sexual sin

  1532. and in our

  1533. day and age

  1534. you will see

  1535. homosexuality

  1536. as a

  1537. perversion

  1538. but you

  1539. do not see

  1540. your gossip

  1541. your greed

  1542. your rampant

  1543. materialism

  1544. your slandering

  1545. of another

  1546. your anger

  1547. you don't see

  1548. any of those

  1549. things a

  1550. perversion

  1551. you don't

  1552. feel the

  1553. weight of

  1554. any of

  1555. that

  1556. how can

  1557. you possibly

  1558. think

  1559. that one

  1560. sin like

  1561. sexual sin

  1562. is a

  1563. perversion

  1564. but your

  1565. impatience is

  1566. justified in

  1567. any way

  1568. we do

  1569. not have a

  1570. hierarchy

  1571. of sin

  1572. there is

  1573. no gospel

  1574. breakthrough

  1575. for any

  1576. of us

  1577. until we

  1578. feel the

  1579. weight of

  1580. our sin

  1581. not someone

  1582. else's sin

  1583. our sin

  1584. and so

  1585. that is the

  1586. first step

  1587. needed to

  1588. break through

  1589. to gospel

  1590. hope and for

  1591. a joy and

  1592. freedom

  1593. is to be

  1594. confronted by

  1595. our own

  1596. sinfulness

  1597. our own

  1598. sinfulness

  1599. we need to

  1600. come to

  1601. that place

  1602. where we

  1603. realize like

  1604. the apostle

  1605. Paul in

  1606. 1 Timothy

  1607. 1 15

  1608. I

  1609. I am

  1610. the worst

  1611. sinner I

  1612. know

  1613. me

  1614. if you

  1615. can

  1616. specifically

  1617. outline

  1618. a history

  1619. of people's

  1620. sin

  1621. against you

  1622. but you

  1623. cannot go

  1624. clearly to

  1625. your own

  1626. sin

  1627. and if

  1628. one makes

  1629. you angry

  1630. and the

  1631. other one

  1632. doesn't

  1633. break you

  1634. you haven't

  1635. yet had

  1636. gospel

  1637. breakthrough

  1638. you're living

  1639. in Chatswood

  1640. with light

  1641. pollution

  1642. you can't

  1643. see the

  1644. glory of

  1645. the stars

  1646. if Jesus

  1647. would come

  1648. and die

  1649. for my

  1650. sin

  1651. then there

  1652. is no

  1653. one he

  1654. would not

  1655. die for

  1656. I've already

  1657. jumped into my

  1658. third point

  1659. seeing ourselves

  1660. here

  1661. that's my

  1662. final point

  1663. we see

  1664. ourselves

  1665. in this

  1666. text

  1667. Romans 1

  1668. is not

  1669. about some

  1670. people

  1671. it's about

  1672. all of us

  1673. one way or

  1674. another

  1675. verses 28

  1676. to 32

  1677. we have

  1678. this

  1679. unsettling

  1680. list

  1681. not an

  1682. exhaustive

  1683. list

  1684. but an

  1685. unsettling

  1686. list

  1687. of an

  1688. outworking

  1689. of idolatry

  1690. it's the

  1691. outworking

  1692. of the

  1693. suppression

  1694. of the

  1695. knowledge

  1696. of God

  1697. of not

  1698. thinking it

  1699. worthwhile

  1700. to retain

  1701. the knowledge

  1702. of God

  1703. the list

  1704. is an

  1705. all

  1706. encompassing

  1707. list

  1708. even if

  1709. it's not

  1710. detailed

  1711. that is

  1712. it includes

  1713. economic

  1714. disorder

  1715. in verse

  1716. 29

  1717. with greed

  1718. in getting

  1719. verse 29

  1720. social

  1721. disorder

  1722. with murder

  1723. and strife

  1724. and deceit

  1725. and malice

  1726. in verse

  1727. 30

  1728. we family

  1729. disorder

  1730. with disobeying

  1731. parents

  1732. in verse

  1733. 31

  1734. further

  1735. relational

  1736. disorder

  1737. with senselessness

  1738. and faithless

  1739. and heartless

  1740. and ruthless

  1741. the point

  1742. this all

  1743. points to

  1744. what is

  1745. known here

  1746. as

  1747. historically

  1748. the Christian

  1749. doctrine

  1750. of total

  1751. depravity

  1752. it touches

  1753. everything

  1754. it means

  1755. that sin

  1756. has touched

  1757. every single

  1758. part

  1759. of who we

  1760. are

  1761. and everything

  1762. that we

  1763. do

  1764. it doesn't

  1765. mean that

  1766. we're

  1767. that human

  1768. beings

  1769. are as bad

  1770. as they

  1771. possibly

  1772. could be

  1773. because God's

  1774. grace to

  1775. all of

  1776. humanity

  1777. is that he

  1778. doesn't just

  1779. hand us

  1780. over to the

  1781. full extent

  1782. of our

  1783. sin

  1784. he by his

  1785. grace

  1786. restrains

  1787. so much

  1788. wickedness

  1789. hell

  1790. is where

  1791. he lets

  1792. go

  1793. and you're

  1794. on your

  1795. own

  1796. right now

  1797. we exist

  1798. with the

  1799. blessings

  1800. of his

  1801. gracious

  1802. hand on

  1803. our lives

  1804. this here

  1805. chapter is a

  1806. dark view

  1807. of humanity

  1808. but

  1809. it fits

  1810. so well

  1811. with the

  1812. reality

  1813. of the

  1814. world in

  1815. which we

  1816. live

  1817. every

  1818. religion

  1819. and system

  1820. of thinking

  1821. must account

  1822. every religion

  1823. and system

  1824. of thinking

  1825. including

  1826. secularism

  1827. must account

  1828. both

  1829. for the

  1830. awesomeness

  1831. of the

  1832. universe

  1833. and at

  1834. the same

  1835. time

  1836. of the

  1837. sorry

  1838. the awesomeness

  1839. of the

  1840. universe

  1841. the goodness

  1842. of that

  1843. human beings

  1844. are so

  1845. capable of

  1846. and at

  1847. the same

  1848. time

  1849. the brokenness

  1850. of our

  1851. world

  1852. and our

  1853. bodies

  1854. and our

  1855. lives

  1856. and our

  1857. hearts

  1858. and our

  1859. relationships

  1860. holding both

  1861. of those

  1862. things in

  1863. tension

  1864. the scriptures

  1865. the christian

  1866. message has

  1867. got a clear

  1868. understanding

  1869. of how those

  1870. two things

  1871. connect

  1872. why is there

  1873. so much beauty

  1874. in this world

  1875. and yet

  1876. why is it

  1877. so flawed

  1878. the bible's answer

  1879. is god

  1880. god

  1881. in the beauty

  1882. of the world

  1883. we are to see

  1884. god's existence

  1885. and in the

  1886. brokenness of the

  1887. world we are to

  1888. see his

  1889. justice

  1890. this

  1891. this

  1892. this ultimately

  1893. takes us

  1894. to the cross

  1895. both of those

  1896. things

  1897. take us

  1898. to the cross

  1899. of jesus christ

  1900. where

  1901. with both

  1902. those things

  1903. the ugliness

  1904. and the beauty

  1905. collide

  1906. for the display

  1907. of god's

  1908. mercy

  1909. towards us

  1910. the ones

  1911. who have

  1912. rejected him

  1913. this

  1914. dark

  1915. view of

  1916. humanity

  1917. in this text

  1918. draws us

  1919. into it

  1920. every single

  1921. one of us

  1922. there is no

  1923. them and us

  1924. these verses

  1925. blow away

  1926. self-righteous

  1927. pride

  1928. if that doesn't

  1929. do it for you

  1930. then come back

  1931. next week

  1932. come back next

  1933. week as the

  1934. apostle paul

  1935. turns his guns

  1936. and does a

  1937. devastating

  1938. rebuke

  1939. on the

  1940. self-righteous

  1941. those who

  1942. are pursuing

  1943. a self-righteous

  1944. morality

  1945. the religious

  1946. you see the

  1947. thing is

  1948. self-righteousness

  1949. and if this

  1950. is you at

  1951. the moment

  1952. let me just

  1953. say self-righteousness

  1954. is always

  1955. without

  1956. without

  1957. failure

  1958. it is

  1959. always

  1960. self-condemnatory

  1961. always

  1962. and it's the

  1963. playing field

  1964. of the

  1965. moralist

  1966. the gospel

  1967. does not

  1968. shine brightly

  1969. brilliantly

  1970. in our

  1971. lives

  1972. until we

  1973. see the

  1974. darkness

  1975. of our

  1976. hearts

  1977. but this

  1978. view of

  1979. humanity

  1980. must be

  1981. read in

  1982. the light

  1983. of verses

  1984. 16 and

  1985. 17

  1986. and considering

  1987. those verses

  1988. we do

  1989. we do not

  1990. need to

  1991. fear

  1992. God's

  1993. righteousness

  1994. because we

  1995. can receive

  1996. his

  1997. righteousness

  1998. the gospel

  1999. is the

  2000. motivation

  2001. and the

  2002. freedom

  2003. and the

  2004. power that

  2005. we need

  2006. to stop

  2007. suppressing

  2008. the truth

  2009. through

  2010. idolatry

  2011. and instead

  2012. finding our

  2013. greatest

  2014. sense of

  2015. satisfaction

  2016. and worth

  2017. and identity

  2018. in him

  2019. so that

  2020. we might

  2021. give God

  2022. the praise

  2023. and the

  2024. gratitude

  2025. that he

  2026. deserves

  2027. so let me

  2028. swing this

  2029. back around

  2030. this church

  2031. under my

  2032. leadership

  2033. seeks to

  2034. be a safe

  2035. place

  2036. for everyone

  2037. for everyone

  2038. we are

  2039. a hospital

  2040. for rescued

  2041. sinners

  2042. none of us

  2043. are more

  2044. needed of

  2045. that rescue

  2046. than anyone

  2047. else

  2048. some of us

  2049. are not just

  2050. in the waiting

  2051. room

  2052. and some

  2053. of us

  2054. in ICU

  2055. we're all

  2056. in ICU

  2057. all of us

  2058. if you

  2059. don't see

  2060. that yet

  2061. gospel

  2062. breakthrough

  2063. awaits

  2064. for you

  2065. where you

  2066. can live

  2067. with joy

  2068. and freedom

  2069. this gospel

  2070. calls us

  2071. to be a

  2072. welcoming

  2073. church

  2074. for all

  2075. people

  2076. who are

  2077. listened

  2078. to

  2079. with

  2080. humility

  2081. patience

  2082. love

  2083. but we

  2084. are also

  2085. a discipling

  2086. community

  2087. following

  2088. Jesus

  2089. as our

  2090. Lord

  2091. this gospel

  2092. calls us

  2093. to be a

  2094. welcoming

  2095. community

  2096. but not

  2097. an affirming

  2098. one of all

  2099. positions and

  2100. lifestyles and

  2101. choices

  2102. people
