  1. I started doing park run last year.

  2. It was a regular gathering on Saturday.

  3. I said in the morning to run, or in my case, to walk,

  4. 5K around Ataman and Willoughby,

  5. with a big group of people.

  6. And at the end of the run,

  7. we scanned a barcode that records our time of the day.

  8. Apart from the exercise,

  9. I enjoyed being a walker in a lap-around course.

  10. I got to say hello to the same group of people,

  11. people that I actually know,

  12. two to three times as they passed me in a different direction.

  13. I often finish the top five longest time,

  14. in real time, which means the last five.

  15. And I try not to be the last one to finish.

  16. As I walk the course slowly,

  17. it was most encouraging

  18. when someone joined to finish a course together

  19. at the same pace as me.

  20. When we're working on something hard or require endurance,

  21. having a pace setter or companion

  22. can make the journey more doable and enjoyable.

  23. Sometimes that may be the key to a breakthrough

  24. in our quest or journeys.

  25. Paul provides the best companion

  26. or a pace setter for us

  27. to follow in the passage we are looking at today.

  28. Abraham, a great figure in the Old Testament,

  29. is well-known by the original audience,

  30. also become well-known by three of the major religions

  31. in our modern days.

  32. Judaism, Christianity, and Muslim.

  33. He had the right relationship with God

  34. based on faith alone.

  35. He is someone from way past

  36. to show us how God has always been

  37. crediting righteousness by faith.

  38. Abraham was a man, a human being,

  39. just like any one of us when God called him.

  40. Let me explain.

  41. Abraham was a child to his parents,

  42. a husband to his spouse,

  43. and a parent to his children.

  44. He cared for his deceased brother's children

  45. and earned a living as a migrant in a foreign land.

  46. He was well-to-do,

  47. but at the same time,

  48. he cared a lot about his close relatives.

  49. He knew what to do to protect them

  50. if they get into trouble,

  51. willing to take a fight when needed.

  52. He was generous

  53. and valued relationship above other things.

  54. He was also a man of principles,

  55. giving honors where honors are due,

  56. and not taking advantage of any situation

  57. to profit for himself.

  58. However, driven by fear,

  59. he also did some not very honorable things.

  60. He told only a half-truth about his marital status

  61. on a few occasions

  62. and almost caused irreparable consequences.

  63. He took things into his own hands

  64. to ensure there was someone

  65. to look after his family

  66. and his wealth when he died.

  67. If you do not know much about Abraham,

  68. let me encourage you to read

  69. the Old Testament book of Genesis,

  70. starting from chapter 12.

  71. But from what I just described,

  72. what do you think of him?

  73. He sounded like all kinds of guys,

  74. just a normal human being,

  75. isn't he?

  76. He sounds all right, isn't he?

  77. Paul states in our chapter today,

  78. in verse 1 to 2,

  79. what then shall we say about Abraham,

  80. our forefather according to the flesh,

  81. discovered in this matter?

  82. If in fact Abraham was justified by works,

  83. he has something to boast about,

  84. but not before God.

  85. Even Paul says,

  86. looking at what Abraham did,

  87. based on his works,

  88. he has something to boast about,

  89. but not before God.

  90. Why is it not before God?

  91. Because the scripture said,

  92. Abraham believed God

  93. and it was credited to him as righteousness.

  94. Abraham's right standing with God

  95. does not come from his obedience or works.

  96. It was credited to him.

  97. The word credited appears 10 times

  98. in this passage,

  99. with the word Kant in verse 8,

  100. which both come from

  101. the same original language of the New Testament.

  102. They are all accounting terms,

  103. meaning to Kant as.

  104. So far in our journey in Romans,

  105. one observation I have is that

  106. Paul tends to repeat the same phrase or word

  107. to highlight his points.

  108. In Steve's introduction,

  109. a few weeks back on chapter 1,

  110. he pointed out that the word gospel

  111. shows up more in the first 17 verses

  112. than anywhere else in Romans.

  113. The word gospel appears more per face

  114. in these verses than anywhere else in the Bible.

  115. In the second half of chapter 1,

  116. Paul shows us a long and devastating

  117. critics of human nature

  118. and how we deserve only God's wrath

  119. and his righteous anger.

  120. And in chapter 2,

  121. the theme judgment shows how

  122. our religiosity and hypocrisy

  123. further inflame God's wrath

  124. and justify God's righteous judgment against us.

  125. And last week,

  126. in chapter 3,

  127. the word righteousness

  128. took a podium position

  129. after leaving all the other runners behind.

  130. In our chapter today,

  131. in chapter 4,

  132. Paul shows us that

  133. the righteousness

  134. that was leading the pack of runners

  135. has a special name.

  136. It was credited righteousness.

  137. To credit something

  138. is to confer a status

  139. that was not there before.

  140. It would be like

  141. end of the pack run,

  142. a person who ran first

  143. waited for me at the finish line

  144. and handed me his barcode

  145. to scan as my record.

  146. And not just that,

  147. the person finished first,

  148. not just him,

  149. but everyone else

  150. finished before or after me

  151. was congratulating me,

  152. celebrating and cheering

  153. that I'm the first

  154. with the shortest time.

  155. Ridiculous sounds to be.

  156. But faith counted as righteousness

  157. means that God treated Abraham

  158. as though he lived a righteous life.

  159. His faith was not righteous,

  160. but God counted it

  161. as if it were.

  162. Now, to the one who works,

  163. wages are not credited

  164. as a gift,

  165. but as an obligation.

  166. However,

  167. to the one who does not work,

  168. but trusts God,

  169. who justifies ungodly,

  170. their faith is credited

  171. as righteousness.

  172. Faith credited as righteousness

  173. is a profound concept.

  174. I believe it's much easier

  175. for us humans

  176. to understand the system

  177. of obligation

  178. that we live in

  179. than to understand

  180. what it means

  181. to have faith credited

  182. as righteousness.

  183. People living

  184. in a democratic country

  185. often highlight

  186. the freedom

  187. and the right they enjoy

  188. and decry

  189. the lack of freedom

  190. of those living in others.

  191. But are you really

  192. or truly free?

  193. Are you truly?

  194. Can you truly be

  195. whoever

  196. and whatever

  197. you want to be?

  198. Can anyone truly

  199. disregard the law?

  200. Relationally,

  201. when someone is nice to me,

  202. I feel obliged

  203. to return the favor

  204. or I feel indebted

  205. to that person.

  206. But on the other hand,

  207. if someone harms me

  208. or my family,

  209. I feel I have the right

  210. to harm them back.

  211. I'm glad

  212. I'm refrained

  213. from doing so overly

  214. due to our legal system.

  215. A few weeks ago,

  216. in my personal Bible reading

  217. and reflection time,

  218. I read about

  219. a conversation

  220. a father had

  221. with him

  222. when he was

  223. in his last year

  224. in high school.

  225. And he said,

  226. son,

  227. you know,

  228. as soon as you finish school,

  229. you have to look

  230. for a job

  231. every day

  232. until you find one.

  233. Your success

  234. or failure

  235. will mean

  236. a good

  237. or bad repetition

  238. for our family.

  239. We are obliged

  240. to do right

  241. by our family

  242. or our society.

  243. By human standards,

  244. we are considered

  245. right

  246. and good

  247. if we abide

  248. by the law

  249. of our society.

  250. Live within our means,

  251. treat others nicely,

  252. and be generous

  253. and charitable.

  254. We should

  255. pack ourselves

  256. on the back

  257. and say,

  258. well done, mate.

  259. And it is so easy

  260. for us

  261. to misunderstand

  262. God requires

  263. the same thing

  264. from us.

  265. That we need

  266. to earn

  267. favor from God.

  268. That we need

  269. to work

  270. for our righteousness.

  271. But on the fifth side,

  272. we can also

  273. fall into thinking

  274. that we deserve

  275. God's grace.

  276. As soon as we think

  277. that we can earn

  278. God's favor

  279. and be righteous

  280. in His sight

  281. by our effort,

  282. we cheapen

  283. the grace

  284. that God has shown

  285. through His Son,

  286. Jesus.

  287. We steal

  288. God's glory

  289. and do not know

  290. what saving faith

  291. is about.

  292. I'm glad

  293. Abraham

  294. has been highlighted

  295. as our case study

  296. of faith,

  297. showing us

  298. what saving faith

  299. is about.

  300. from verse 9

  301. to 12,

  302. it says this,

  303. Abraham's faith

  304. was credited

  305. to him

  306. as righteousness.

  307. He received

  308. a seal

  309. of the righteousness

  310. that he had

  311. by faith,

  312. so that he is

  313. a father

  314. of all who believe,

  315. in order that righteousness

  316. may be credited

  317. to them,

  318. who also follow

  319. the footsteps

  320. of the faith

  321. that our father

  322. Abraham had.

  323. Abraham

  324. is not just

  325. our pay setter.

  326. he is also

  327. our guarantee

  328. because Paul says

  329. he is a father

  330. of all

  331. who believes,

  332. of all

  333. who follow

  334. in the footsteps

  335. of his faith.

  336. We,

  337. as we follow him,

  338. we experience

  339. the reality

  340. of being loved

  341. and accepted

  342. by God

  343. while we are

  344. sinful

  345. and imperfect.

  346. Abraham

  347. was not

  348. himself

  349. righteous,

  350. perfect,

  351. or blameless,

  352. but God

  353. treated him

  354. as though

  355. he were.

  356. God shows us

  357. through Abraham

  358. that our justification

  359. or credited

  360. righteousness

  361. is by faith

  362. in him alone.

  363. So,

  364. what does it mean

  365. to follow

  366. in faith?

  367. What is the faith

  368. that saved Abraham

  369. and which will

  370. save us also?

  371. first five

  372. tell us

  373. that faith

  374. equals

  375. trust God

  376. who justifies

  377. the ungodly.

  378. It does not

  379. merely believe

  380. God exists,

  381. but believes

  382. and trust

  383. in what God

  384. has

  385. and will do

  386. for us.

  387. Verse 17

  388. to 25

  389. shows us

  390. that

  391. believe God

  392. or trust God

  393. has these

  394. three things.

  395. Firstly,

  396. verse 18

  397. to 19

  398. against all hope

  399. Abraham in hope

  400. believed

  401. and so become

  402. the father

  403. of many nations.

  404. Just as it had

  405. been said to him,

  406. so shall your

  407. offspring be.

  408. Without

  409. weakening

  410. in his faith,

  411. he faced

  412. the fact that

  413. his body

  414. was as good

  415. as dead

  416. since he was

  417. about a hundred

  418. years old

  419. and that

  420. Sarah's room

  421. was also dead.

  422. God promised

  423. Abraham

  424. that his

  425. offspring

  426. would be

  427. as numerous

  428. as the stars

  429. in the sky,

  430. but he was

  431. still

  432. childless

  433. when he was

  434. about a hundred

  435. years old.

  436. Abraham's body

  437. appeased

  438. hopeless,

  439. but he does

  440. not go on

  441. appearance.

  442. Faith is

  443. not opposed

  444. to reason,

  445. but it's

  446. sometimes opposed

  447. to feelings

  448. and appearance.

  449. it's not

  450. simply

  451. an optimism

  452. about life

  453. in general,

  454. not going

  455. on about

  456. saying

  457. always look

  458. on the bright

  459. side of life,

  460. nor faith

  461. in oneself.

  462. It does not

  463. keep saying,

  464. I think I can

  465. as we come

  466. at the mountain.

  467. Abraham

  468. shows that

  469. saving faith

  470. is kind of

  471. a death

  472. to self-trust.

  473. It's going

  474. on something

  475. despite our

  476. weakness,

  477. feeling,

  478. and perceptions.

  479. He goes

  480. on God's

  481. promise.

  482. So first

  483. things,

  484. not go on

  485. appearance,

  486. but goes

  487. on God's

  488. promise.

  489. Secondly,

  490. verse 20

  491. to 21,

  492. yet he did

  493. not wafer

  494. to unbelief

  495. regarding the

  496. promise of

  497. God,

  498. but was

  499. strengthened

  500. in his

  501. faith

  502. and gave

  503. glory to

  504. God,

  505. being fully

  506. persuaded

  507. things that

  508. were not.

  509. So he

  510. insisted

  511. on this

  512. measured

  513. reflection

  514. about God.

  515. Abraham

  516. shows us

  517. that

  518. saving faith

  519. and believing

  520. in God

  521. is not

  522. the absence

  523. of thinking,

  524. but rather

  525. a profound

  526. insistence

  527. on acting

  528. out of our

  529. focus on

  530. the facts

  531. about God.

  532. Saving faith

  533. is thinking

  534. about who

  535. God is

  536. and his

  537. power

  538. and focusing

  539. about the

  540. facts of

  541. him.

  542. Abraham

  543. did not

  544. have much

  545. to go on

  546. except God's

  547. word of

  548. promise.

  549. We have

  550. far more

  551. facts about

  552. God to

  553. focus on,

  554. a far

  555. greater

  556. demonstration

  557. of his

  558. love and

  559. power,

  560. because we

  561. know that

  562. God raised

  563. his own

  564. son,

  565. Jesus,

  566. to life

  567. as we

  568. just

  569. celebrated

  570. Easter

  571. only a

  572. month ago.

  573. So secondly,

  574. he insists

  575. on focusing

  576. on facts

  577. about God.

  578. Thirdly,

  579. which is

  580. developed

  581. from what

  582. I just

  583. said,

  584. believe God

  585. means to

  586. trust the

  587. bare words

  588. of God.

  589. Abraham

  590. believed

  591. that God

  592. had the

  593. power to

  594. do what

  595. he has

  596. promised.

  597. He

  598. trusts in

  599. his word.

  600. Verse 21,

  601. being fully

  602. persuaded,

  603. that God

  604. had power

  605. to do

  606. what he

  607. had promised

  608. it.

  609. Are you

  610. willing to

  611. take God

  612. at his

  613. word when

  614. feeling

  615. popular

  616. opinion

  617. and common

  618. sense

  619. contradict

  620. God's

  621. promise?

  622. Are you

  623. going to

  624. look at

  625. what he

  626. has said

  627. and let

  628. that define

  629. reality for

  630. you?

  631. So there

  632. are three

  633. things.

  634. Go on

  635. God's

  636. promise,

  637. insist on

  638. focus on

  639. the facts

  640. about God

  641. and trust

  642. the bare

  643. words of

  644. God.

  645. You can

  646. have lots

  647. and lots

  648. of strong

  649. faith that

  650. God exists,

  651. that he

  652. is loving,

  653. that he

  654. is holy.

  655. You can

  656. believe that

  657. the Bible

  658. is of

  659. God's

  660. holy word.

  661. You can

  662. show great

  663. reference

  664. for God.

  665. Yet,

  666. seek to

  667. be your

  668. own

  669. savior

  670. and

  671. justify

  672. by trusting

  673. your

  674. performance

  675. in religion,

  676. moral

  677. character,

  678. job,

  679. or parenting.

  680. You can

  681. let those

  682. things define

  683. reality for

  684. you or

  685. have saving

  686. faith and

  687. transfer your

  688. trust to

  689. God and

  690. his word.

  691. And when

  692. you do,

  693. you will

  694. enjoy your

  695. faith journey

  696. with Abraham

  697. and many

  698. others who

  699. have gone

  700. before you

  701. and after

  702. you to

  703. treasure Jesus

  704. together.

  705. So,

  706. how are

  707. we saved?

  708. Paul says

  709. in verse

  710. 23 to

  711. 25,

  712. the word

  713. it was

  714. credited to

  715. him were

  716. written not

  717. for him

  718. alone,

  719. but also

  720. for us,

  721. to whom

  722. God will

  723. credit

  724. righteousness

  725. for us,

  726. who believe

  727. in him,

  728. who raised

  729. Jesus our

  730. Lord from

  731. the dead.

  732. He was

  733. delivered over

  734. to death

  735. for our

  736. sins and

  737. was raised

  738. to life

  739. for our

  740. justification.

  741. God's

  742. promise of

  743. credited

  744. righteousness

  745. is for

  746. us,

  747. who believe

  748. in God,

  749. who raised

  750. his son

  751. Jesus for

  752. our sins

  753. and justification.

  754. Tim Keller

  755. sums it up

  756. this way,

  757. Abraham's

  758. faith was

  759. in the

  760. promise of

  761. a descendant.

  762. Our

  763. faith is

  764. in what

  765. God says

  766. one of

  767. his

  768. descendants

  769. has

  770. achieved.

  771. This is

  772. a promise

  773. which is

  774. to define

  775. our reality

  776. and shape

  777. our lives.

  778. As I

  779. illustrated

  780. before,

  781. being credited

  782. or counted

  783. as righteousness

  784. is like

  785. the runner

  786. that finished

  787. first in

  788. a 5k

  789. pack run

  790. did under

  791. 20 minutes

  792. and wait

  793. at the

  794. finish line

  795. for another

  796. 30 or

  797. 40 minutes

  798. to give

  799. me his

  800. barcode

  801. to record

  802. as my

  803. time.

  804. But not

  805. just that,

  806. he grabbed

  807. my barcode

  808. as his

  809. record.

  810. And so

  811. I can

  812. count

  813. with his

  814. best

  815. record

  816. and he

  817. took my

  818. bad

  819. record

  820. onto

  821. himself.

  822. The

  823. person

  824. who

  825. come

  826. out

  827. victorious

  828. and

  829. waiting

  830. and

  831. trade

  832. places

  833. with

  834. us

  835. is

  836. not

  837. Abraham

  838. but

  839. our

  840. savior

  841. Jesus.

  842. The

  843. descendant

  844. of

  845. Abraham

  846. that we

  847. are

  848. looking

  849. to

  850. is

  851. an

  852. author

  853. and

  854. perfecter

  855. of

  856. faith

  857. who

  858. endures a

  859. cross for

  860. the joy

  861. set

  862. before him.

  863. Our

  864. salvation

  865. is

  866. nothing

  867. to do

  868. with

  869. what

  870. is

  871. in

  872. us

  873. or

  874. what

  875. we

  876. achieve

  877. but

  878. has

  879. everything

  880. to do

  881. with

  882. God's

  883. work

  884. of

  885. grace

  886. in

  887. his

  888. son

  889. Jesus.

  890. Abraham

  891. is

  892. one of

  893. many

  894. witnesses

  895. that

  896. point

  897. us

  898. to

  899. Jesus

  900. the

  901. pioneer

  902. and

  903. perfecter

  904. of

  905. faith.

  906. You

  907. can

  908. see

  909. the

  910. whole

  911. list

  912. of

  913. examples

  914. in

  915. the

  916. New

  917. Testament

  918. book

  919. of

  920. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  921. chapter

  922. 11.

  923. 12.

  924. And in

  925. chapter

  926. 12.

  927. Verse 2-3

  928. it says

  929. this.

  930. For the

  931. joy set

  932. before him

  933. which

  934. Jesus

  935. he

  936. endured

  937. the

  938. cross

  939. scorning

  940. his

  941. shame

  942. and sat

  943. down

  944. at the

  945. right

  946. hand

  947. of the

  948. throne

  949. of

  950. God

  951. consider

  952. him

  953. who

  954. endured

  955. such

  956. opposition

  957. from

  958. sinners

  959. so that

  960. you

  961. will not

  962. grow

  963. weary

  964. or lose

  965. heart.

  966. Jesus

  967. endured

  968. the cross

  969. for God

  970. to

  971. credit

  972. his

  973. righteousness

  974. to

  975. us.

  976. As

  977. we

  978. receive

  979. our

  980. righteousness

  981. we

  982. also

  983. join

  984. in

  985. the

  986. joy

  987. that

  988. was

  989. before

  990. Jesus

  991. and

  992. give

  993. glory

  994. to

  995. God

  996. and

  997. have

  998. a

  999. hopeful

  1000. humility

  1001. about

  1002. ourselves.

  1003. Crucifixion

  1004. is the

  1005. most

  1006. shameful

  1007. way

  1008. to be

  1009. punished.

  1010. Jesus

  1011. scorned

  1012. shame

  1013. and

  1014. credited

  1015. us

  1016. righteous

  1017. so that

  1018. we

  1019. do not

  1020. need to

  1021. be

  1022. ashamed

  1023. of

  1024. our

  1025. sins

  1026. or

  1027. ourselves.

  1028. Instead

  1029. we

  1030. can

  1031. be

  1032. honest

  1033. about

  1034. our

  1035. weakness

  1036. and

  1037. bring

  1038. them

  1039. out

  1040. into

  1041. the

  1042. open

  1043. for

  1044. God

  1045. to

  1046. deal

  1047. with

  1048. them.

  1049. Jesus

  1050. sat

  1051. down

  1052. at

  1053. the

  1054. right

  1055. hand

  1056. of

  1057. the

  1058. throne

  1059. of

  1060. God

  1061. to

  1062. rule

  1063. the

  1064. world

  1065. and

  1066. through

  1067. faith

  1068. we

  1069. also

  1070. rule

  1071. with

  1072. him.

  1073. our

  1074. life

  1075. is

  1076. never

  1077. out

  1078. of

  1079. control

  1080. under

  1081. the

  1082. kingship

  1083. of

  1084. Jesus.

  1085. Our

  1086. purpose

  1087. and

  1088. identity

  1089. in the

  1090. world

  1091. are

  1092. to

  1093. live

  1094. as

  1095. children

  1096. of

  1097. Jesus

  1098. credited

  1099. righteousness

  1100. and

  1101. rule

  1102. with

  1103. him.

  1104. When

  1105. we

  1106. consider

  1107. Jesus

  1108. who

  1109. induced

  1110. such

  1111. opposition

  1112. from

  1113. sinners

  1114. we

  1115. can

  1116. live

  1117. without

  1118. fear

  1119. of

  1120. the

  1121. future

  1122. and

  1123. despair

  1124. at

  1125. our

  1126. failing.

  1127. The

  1128. power

  1129. that

  1130. raised

  1131. Jesus

  1132. to

  1133. life

  1134. is

  1135. our

  1136. justification

  1137. and

  1138. assurance

  1139. that

  1140. we

  1141. will

  1142. be

  1143. raised

  1144. to

  1145. enjoy

  1146. eternal

  1147. life

  1148. in a

  1149. renewed

  1150. world.

  1151. Therefore

  1152. let us

  1153. fix our

  1154. eyes on

  1155. Jesus

  1156. the

  1157. pioneer

  1158. and

  1159. perfecter

  1160. of

  1161. faith

  1162. as we

  1163. continue

  1164. our

  1165. journey

  1166. of being

  1167. transformed

  1168. by the

  1169. gospel

  1170. through

  1171. Romans.
