  1. If you've just joined us, we are working our way through the New Testament book of Romans.

  2. Romans, as I said right at the beginning, is one of the most powerful and influential

  3. pieces of literature ever written.

  4. It has been the force behind some of the most significant transformations in society, in

  5. all of history, in fact.

  6. And it's my hope as we journey through this book that we would experience something of

  7. that deep and radical change in our own lives as we journey through it.

  8. The story of Romans so far, as we have been going through over these number of weeks, is

  9. that though we deserve God's judgment, we can in fact be right with our creator God because

  10. Jesus Christ himself, God the Son, bore God's right anger for our sin in our place.

  11. True faith is trusting in God's promises in Jesus Christ and all that Jesus has achieved

  12. on our behalf.

  13. Being made right with God, just justified by Jesus Christ means that therefore that we enjoy

  14. peace with God, peace with God, access to God and even in the midst of hardship and suffering

  15. in this world, a real sense of contentment and joy.

  16. This is all because of Jesus Christ, our representative, that he himself has obeyed God's requirements

  17. on our behalf.

  18. He's done and achieved what we could not achieve.

  19. And crucially, we don't obey God to be made right with God.

  20. That's not how we get right with God.

  21. Religion does not help you.

  22. But because of who we are, it's because of who we are in Jesus and what he's achieved for

  23. us.

  24. That's really the first five chapters of Romans in a very short summary.

  25. Chapters six and seven are a hinge in the book of Romans.

  26. We started in chapter six last week.

  27. There are hinge.

  28. Paul zooms in here in these chapters to show us how God's grace to us in Jesus not only

  29. justifies us, makes us right with God, but also transforms us.

  30. It changes us.

  31. If you like, they answer the question, in view of Romans one to five, what happens now?

  32. What's next?

  33. That's what chapters six and seven do.

  34. That is, these chapters are a theology of change.

  35. God's grace is not just powerful enough to save us from sin, but also to save us to obedience.

  36. In chapter six, last week, Paul says that we are united with Jesus in the most intimate

  37. relationship possible.

  38. And we are now set free to serve God for our joy and his glory.

  39. Why would we not want to obey God after all that he's achieved for us in Jesus?

  40. Why would we not want to treasure him in all of life?

  41. Well, that brings us to chapter seven.

  42. That's where we're in now.

  43. Now, this is a chapter that you can spend five minutes on and give you a brief overview,

  44. or you can spend weeks on it.

  45. For your joy, I will be closer to the five minutes than the weeks this morning, but it

  46. is a deep, deep chapter.

  47. What this chapter tells us, in summary, is that all of life is a battle between two selves.

  48. All of life.

  49. We all have a war going on inside of us between the good and the bad in our hearts.

  50. All of us.

  51. What it's telling us is that before Jesus, we think we're winning that war.

  52. With Jesus, it feels like we're losing the war.

  53. And this is Paul bringing perspective to us here.

  54. When you become a Christian, the point is, when you become a Christian, you don't move

  55. from warfare to peace.

  56. With God you do, but not with the battle within.

  57. You don't move from warfare to peace.

  58. We move from one battle to a new battle.

  59. That's what happens.

  60. We move from a war that we cannot win to a war that we cannot lose.

  61. That's what Romans 7 is laying out for us.

  62. So the three points today, if you've got St. Paul's app, the battle before Christ, the battle

  63. in Christ, and the battle with Christ.

  64. That's how we're going to move through this text.

  65. So verses 7 to 13 is the battle that every human being has got going on inside of them.

  66. It's the battle that we have before Christ.

  67. Verse 7, Paul introduces another question on the back of his argument of the previous six

  68. verses, and in particular, verse 6 of chapter 7.

  69. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve

  70. in the new way of the spirit and not in the old way of the written code.

  71. And so the question in verse 7 is, what shall we say then?

  72. Is the law sinful?

  73. It is the Old Testament law.

  74. God's word, is it sinful?

  75. If we need to be released from the law, which is now referred to here as the old way, doesn't

  76. it mean that the law is sinful?

  77. It's evil.

  78. And of course, the short answer is, certainly not.

  79. And then the long answer comes from verses 7 to 13.

  80. The summary version is, is it sin in us that makes the law ineffective?

  81. It's not that the law is evil, but it's the sin in us that makes the law ineffective.

  82. So the question is, well, what therefore is the law for?

  83. And that's what Paul does here in these verses.

  84. What therefore does the law do?

  85. The main purpose of the law is it shows us the character of sin.

  86. Verse 7.

  87. Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law.

  88. The law does that by, firstly, it defines sin for us.

  89. Verse 7 again.

  90. For I would not have known what covening really was if the law had said, you shall not covet.

  91. That is, this means the very concept of covening is outlined by the law.

  92. That is, without that standard of the law, you shall not covet, Paul would not have known

  93. that covening was a sin.

  94. That's what he's saying.

  95. So it defines what sin is.

  96. Secondly, the law reveals sin.

  97. Verse 8.

  98. But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covening.

  99. For apart from the law, sin was dead.

  100. That is, when a commandment of God comes to us, this is what Paul's saying here.

  101. When it comes to us, it aggravates and stirs up sin in our hearts.

  102. It doesn't just show us what sin is in general, but how sin resides in us.

  103. The same idea is stated in verse 13.

  104. In order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good, that's the law, to bring

  105. about my death.

  106. So that through the commandment, sin might become utterly sinful.

  107. What Paul's saying here is the more I tried to avoid coveting, the more coveting grew in me.

  108. The law made sin in my life utterly sinful.

  109. That is, I didn't realize how sinful I was before the law.

  110. The law made sin in his life utterly sinful.

  111. That is, much worse.

  112. Totally inexcusable.

  113. So for the religious person sitting in this room or online, the Old Testament law, or let's

  114. summarize that, the Ten Commandments were never meant as a means to salvation.

  115. Never.

  116. As if you could obey them and somehow be right with God.

  117. Because, and this is Paul's point, it's because it was given to sinners.

  118. Instead, what the law does is exposes our need for salvation.

  119. It helps us to see how sinful we are.

  120. Without the law, we will consistently be in denial about the depth and the nature of our sin.

  121. So the law defines sin for us.

  122. It reveals sin in us.

  123. But thirdly, it provokes sin in us.

  124. Sin is aroused by the exposure to the law.

  125. This points us back to the early chapters of Romans and the bleak condition of every human heart.

  126. That is, what Romans 1 to 3 tells us is that there is a perversity about every human heart.

  127. Perversity being a desire to do something for no other reason than because it's wrong.

  128. That's what perversity means.

  129. It's a joy in wrongdoing for its own sake.

  130. And I had a heap of illustrations, personal illustrations, that I could bring to bear here.

  131. But because of my own children in the building, I decided not to go back into history,

  132. but instead to go way back into history and use St. Augustine instead.

  133. I think we'll throw him on the dock here rather than me.

  134. And the ones that immediately came to mind about my joy in sin.

  135. St. Augustine writes about this in his Confessions.

  136. He describes a time when he stole some pears as a boy.

  137. And then he draws some amazing insights from that experience.

  138. This is, I'll quote him.

  139. Near our vineyard was a pear tree loaded with fruit,

  140. though the fruit was not particularly attractive either in colour or taste.

  141. I and some other youths conceived the idea of shaking the pears off this tree and carrying them away.

  142. We set out late at night, stole all the fruit that we could carry,

  143. and this was not to feed ourselves.

  144. We may have tasted a few.

  145. Then we threw the rest to the pigs.

  146. Our real pleasure was simply in doing something that was not allowed.

  147. I had plenty of better pears of my own.

  148. I only took these ones in order that I might be a thief.

  149. Once I had taken them, I threw them away,

  150. and all I tasted in them was my own iniquity,

  151. which I enjoyed very much.

  152. That's every human heart.

  153. His point is,

  154. there is always a much deeper motive

  155. for the surface sins,

  156. and for every surface sin.

  157. When we lie or steal or impure or cruel,

  158. there is a superficial motive,

  159. and it might be greed,

  160. it might be anger,

  161. it might be loneliness,

  162. but there is a much deeper motive driving the superficial one.

  163. An Augustine study of the Bible,

  164. and experience with the pear tree,

  165. showed him that the ultimate underlying motive

  166. for all sin

  167. is a desire to be God,

  168. to play God.

  169. We have a deep desire

  170. to be in charge of our lives,

  171. and our world,

  172. in fact,

  173. to the degree

  174. that every person exists

  175. for my glory,

  176. for your glory.

  177. And when they block my glory,

  178. anger

  179. is the result.

  180. Point out a problem with anger

  181. is what you get.

  182. We want to be sovereign.

  183. That goes right back to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  184. Every law God lays down in His word,

  185. Ten Commandments,

  186. everything else,

  187. every single law that He lays down

  188. is an infringement

  189. upon my perceived absolute sovereignty in life.

  190. Every one of them.

  191. Every one of them

  192. is a reminder

  193. that I am not God

  194. and prevents me

  195. from living life

  196. the way that I think

  197. life should be lived.

  198. The essence of the very first sin

  199. of the Garden of Eden

  200. was to be like God,

  201. and it's the essence of all sin

  202. from that moment.

  203. So the more

  204. God's word,

  205. His law,

  206. is exposed

  207. exposed

  208. in me,

  209. the more

  210. that that sinful force,

  211. that deep desire

  212. in me

  213. will be aggravated

  214. into reaction

  215. against it.

  216. And this leads

  217. to the fourth thing

  218. that sin does.

  219. It leads to an overwhelming

  220. conviction of sin.

  221. That's Paul's point

  222. in verses 9 to 11.

  223. This is what he says

  224. in verse 9.

  225. Once I was alive

  226. apart from the law,

  227. but when the commandment came,

  228. sin sprang to life

  229. and I died.

  230. Now Paul here

  231. is not referring

  232. to a previous time

  233. in his life

  234. when the law of God

  235. had no bearing

  236. on his life.

  237. That is just not possible

  238. to interpret that verse

  239. in that way.

  240. That's because

  241. the Apostle Paul

  242. was a devout,

  243. he was a Jewish boy

  244. from a devout family.

  245. There was not

  246. a single time

  247. in his pre-Christian

  248. days

  249. when he did not

  250. know the law

  251. or try to obey

  252. the law.

  253. Right from birth,

  254. that was his life.

  255. So I think

  256. he's meaning

  257. that before

  258. he was a Christian,

  259. he did not

  260. know the demands

  261. of the law,

  262. the true,

  263. the deep demands

  264. of the law.

  265. He did not know

  266. what the law

  267. truly required.

  268. He saw a bunch

  269. of rules

  270. but did not

  271. understand

  272. the deep thrust

  273. of them all.

  274. He did not know

  275. what it truly

  276. meant to love

  277. God supremely.

  278. And so when

  279. he says

  280. I was alive,

  281. he's writing

  282. about his own

  283. self-deception,

  284. his own

  285. self-perception.

  286. I'm basically

  287. a good guy.

  288. Look at the rules

  289. that I keep.

  290. He thought

  291. that he was

  292. morally good,

  293. pleasing God.

  294. God was in fact

  295. satisfied with him.

  296. And when he writes

  297. the commandment

  298. came,

  299. he died,

  300. he realised

  301. he was

  302. in fact

  303. spiritually dead

  304. at that moment.

  305. He thought

  306. I'm going along

  307. really well spiritually

  308. compared to everyone else

  309. I'm doing really well.

  310. Felt

  311. better than most.

  312. And then

  313. the law came

  314. and he had

  315. an overwhelming

  316. sense

  317. of his failure

  318. and his condemnation.

  319. That is,

  320. if you like,

  321. the commandment

  322. came home

  323. to him.

  324. The reality

  325. of it

  326. struck me.

  327. I came

  328. under the conviction

  329. of sin.

  330. And verse

  331. eight tells us

  332. that the commandment

  333. that came

  334. home to him

  335. that exposed

  336. his sin

  337. and his failure

  338. was the

  339. tenth commandment.

  340. you shall

  341. not

  342. covet.

  343. Why that

  344. one?

  345. Why that

  346. one?

  347. What's

  348. special about

  349. it?

  350. You see,

  351. as a Pharisee,

  352. Paul would have

  353. thought of sin

  354. only in terms

  355. of external

  356. actions.

  357. As

  358. I go to say,

  359. most people do

  360. think of sin

  361. only in terms

  362. of external

  363. actions.

  364. He would have

  365. thought that if I

  366. didn't commit

  367. an evil act,

  368. I was therefore

  369. not guilty of sin.

  370. You know,

  371. there's no time

  372. I've committed

  373. adultery,

  374. so tick the box.

  375. I've done that one.

  376. You know,

  377. tick the box.

  378. I haven't

  379. murdered anyone.

  380. Tick the box,

  381. tick the box,

  382. tick the box.

  383. Woohoo!

  384. Gone through the

  385. first nine,

  386. tick the box,

  387. tick the box,

  388. tick the box.

  389. I'm a good guy.

  390. But in the

  391. Sermon on the

  392. Mount,

  393. Jesus showed

  394. us that all

  395. the Ten

  396. Commandments

  397. refer not only

  398. to behaviour,

  399. but to much

  400. deeper level

  401. of inward

  402. attitudes and

  403. motives as

  404. well.

  405. And yet,

  406. you can

  407. interpret the

  408. Ten Commandments

  409. superficially as

  410. behavioural rules

  411. relatively easy

  412. to keep.

  413. as did

  414. the rich

  415. young ruler

  416. when he

  417. came to

  418. Jesus and

  419. asked Jesus,

  420. what must I

  421. do to

  422. inherit eternal

  423. life?

  424. What did

  425. Jesus do?

  426. What was

  427. Jesus'

  428. response?

  429. He listed

  430. off the

  431. commandments,

  432. except

  433. Jesus didn't

  434. mention

  435. Commandment

  436. One,

  437. love the

  438. Lord your

  439. God with

  440. all your

  441. heart,

  442. soul and

  443. mind,

  444. and he

  445. didn't

  446. mention

  447. number

  448. Ten,

  449. do not

  450. covet.

  451. Jesus

  452. said go

  453. away and

  454. do that

  455. and you

  456. live,

  457. and he

  458. walked

  459. away sad.

  460. You see,

  461. coveting has

  462. everything to

  463. do with

  464. inner motives.

  465. It has

  466. everything to

  467. do with

  468. heart issues.

  469. It's the

  470. one of

  471. these Ten

  472. Commandments

  473. that you

  474. cannot tick

  475. the box and

  476. say,

  477. I've done

  478. it practically.

  479. coveting

  480. includes

  481. envy,

  482. self-pitying,

  483. grumbling,

  484. murmuring.

  485. Coveting is

  486. not just

  487. wanting,

  488. it's an

  489. idolatrous

  490. longing for

  491. more beauty,

  492. for more

  493. wealth,

  494. for more

  495. approval,

  496. for more

  497. popularity than

  498. you have.

  499. And Paul

  500. had never

  501. understood

  502. sin as a

  503. matter of

  504. inward

  505. longings and

  506. idolatrous

  507. drives and

  508. desires.

  509. He had

  510. never seen

  511. sin as

  512. essentially

  513. coveting

  514. against

  515. God,

  516. failing to

  517. love God

  518. enough to

  519. be content

  520. with God.

  521. He thought

  522. of sin only

  523. in terms of

  524. violating rules.

  525. And so when

  526. the commandment

  527. came home

  528. to him,

  529. he first in

  530. his life saw

  531. the depth

  532. of his sin

  533. right to

  534. the core

  535. of his

  536. being.

  537. He saw

  538. how utterly

  539. evil and

  540. wicked he

  541. was.

  542. And so

  543. the flaw

  544. was not

  545. in the

  546. law.

  547. Verse 12

  548. indicates

  549. it's in fact

  550. quite the

  551. reverse.

  552. The flaw

  553. was in

  554. Paul

  555. and us

  556. not the

  557. law.

  558. Externally

  559. we may be

  560. very good.

  561. Internally

  562. we cannot

  563. be anything

  564. other than

  565. a sinful.

  566. The law

  567. is good

  568. but I

  569. am evil.

  570. That's

  571. his point

  572. in the

  573. first bit

  574. of chapter

  575. seven.

  576. He's

  577. talking about

  578. his pre-Christian

  579. days.

  580. When you

  581. move to

  582. verse 14

  583. there's now

  584. a shift

  585. and he's

  586. now referring

  587. to his

  588. battle

  589. in Christ

  590. as a

  591. Christian.

  592. The first

  593. half is

  594. Paul looking

  595. back before

  596. he's a

  597. Christian

  598. now and

  599. how the

  600. law calls

  601. him to

  602. look beyond

  603. himself to

  604. Jesus for

  605. rescue.

  606. And this

  607. is now

  608. Paul writing

  609. about his

  610. current

  611. experience

  612. battling

  613. sin as

  614. a

  615. Christian.

  616. This

  617. is his

  618. battle

  619. and that

  620. of every

  621. Christian

  622. in Jesus

  623. in Christ.

  624. Now I

  625. need to

  626. disclose here

  627. that this

  628. section

  629. has been

  630. debated

  631. for

  632. centuries.

  633. These

  634. verses here

  635. the second

  636. half of

  637. chapter seven

  638. have been

  639. debated

  640. for centuries.

  641. The issue

  642. is whether

  643. Paul is

  644. still writing

  645. here about

  646. his

  647. pre-Christian

  648. experience

  649. of battling

  650. sin or

  651. his

  652. current

  653. Christian

  654. experience

  655. of battling

  656. sin.

  657. And let me

  658. just say

  659. that there

  660. have been

  661. plenty,

  662. plenty of

  663. thoughtful,

  664. wise,

  665. godly people

  666. on both

  667. sides of

  668. that debate.

  669. Still are

  670. on both

  671. sides of

  672. that debate.

  673. For instance,

  674. some find it

  675. hard to

  676. reconcile

  677. that a

  678. Christian

  679. could

  680. write

  681. as

  682. Paul

  683. does

  684. in

  685. verse

  686. 14,

  687. I am

  688. unspiritual

  689. sold as

  690. a slave

  691. to sin.

  692. He also

  693. confesses

  694. that he

  695. sins

  696. regularly

  697. in

  698. verse 15,

  699. I do

  700. not

  701. understand

  702. what I

  703. do.

  704. For

  705. what I

  706. want

  707. to do

  708. I do,

  709. but what

  710. I hate

  711. I do.

  712. And again

  713. in verse

  714. 18,

  715. I have

  716. the desire

  717. to do

  718. what is

  719. good,

  720. but I

  721. cannot

  722. carry it

  723. out.

  724. Now,

  725. the reason

  726. I think

  727. he's

  728. writing

  729. about

  730. his

  731. current

  732. Christian

  733. experience

  734. of

  735. battle

  736. with

  737. sin

  738. is

  739. really

  740. four

  741. reasons.

  742. Firstly,

  743. the change

  744. of verb

  745. tenses.

  746. He moves

  747. from the

  748. past in

  749. the tense

  750. of the

  751. verbs

  752. to the

  753. present

  754. tense

  755. in

  756. all

  757. verbs

  758. in.

  759. That

  760. is,

  761. in 7

  762. to 13,

  763. the verbs

  764. are past

  765. tense,

  766. 14

  767. onwards,

  768. present

  769. tense,

  770. he's

  771. talking

  772. about

  773. now.

  774. Secondly,

  775. there's

  776. also a

  777. change

  778. of

  779. situation.

  780. Verses

  781. 7

  782. to 13

  783. is sin

  784. killing

  785. him,

  786. but from

  787. verses

  788. 14

  789. onwards,

  790. it's

  791. him

  792. wrestling

  793. with

  794. sin.

  795. It's

  796. a battle

  797. that he

  798. refuses

  799. to

  800. surrender

  801. to,

  802. but he

  803. is not

  804. dead or

  805. dying or

  806. losing.

  807. Thirdly,

  808. Paul delights

  809. in God's

  810. law in

  811. verse 22,

  812. for in

  813. my inner

  814. being I

  815. delight in

  816. God's

  817. law,

  818. even though

  819. sin is

  820. at work

  821. in him.

  822. Romans 8,

  823. the very next

  824. chapter,

  825. Romans 8

    Romans 8:7

  826. verse 7

  827. tells us

  828. that a sinful

  829. mind that is

  830. hostile to

  831. God cannot

  832. delight in

  833. God's law,

  834. cannot submit

  835. to God's

  836. law.

  837. A non-believer

  838. cannot delight

  839. in God's

  840. law.

  841. God's

  842. law.

  843. Fourthly,

  844. Paul admits

  845. he's a

  846. sinner in

  847. verse 18,

  848. and an

  849. unbeliever

  850. is unaware

  851. that they

  852. are so

  853. sinful that

  854. they cannot

  855. save

  856. themselves.

  857. They

  858. cannot

  859. acknowledge

  860. the depth

  861. of their

  862. sin.

  863. That is

  864. why I

  865. think Paul

  866. is here

  867. in these

  868. verses

  869. laying out

  870. his inner

  871. struggle

  872. as a

  873. Christian.

  874. Christian.

  875. It's the

  876. experience of

  877. every believer

  878. in Jesus.

  879. That experience

  880. is that on

  881. the one

  882. hand,

  883. we now see

  884. God's law

  885. as spiritual,

  886. verse 14,

  887. good,

  888. verse 16,

  889. and have a

  890. desire to keep

  891. it in

  892. verses 15

  893. and 18.

  894. Paul says

  895. that in his

  896. inner being,

  897. he rejoices

  898. in the law.

  899. in his

  900. heart of

  901. hearts,

  902. in the

  903. depths of

  904. himself,

  905. he loves

  906. the law

  907. of God.

  908. But on

  909. the other

  910. hand,

  911. his actions

  912. are against

  913. the law.

  914. Sort of

  915. like

  916. Robert Louis

  917. Stevenson's

  918. Dr.

  919. Jekyll and

  920. Mr.

  921. Hyde.

  922. If you've

  923. never read

  924. it, it's a

  925. really helpful

  926. little read.

  927. It's only

  928. really short,

  929. like 80

  930. pages or

  931. something in

  932. the original

  933. form.

  934. Don't

  935. watch a

  936. movie or

  937. just read

  938. the book.

  939. Really,

  940. really helpful.

  941. The premise

  942. of the book

  943. is that

  944. every single

  945. being has

  946. a sense

  947. of two

  948. cells

  949. battling.

  950. Two

  951. sense of

  952. cells,

  953. a sense

  954. of two

  955. cells

  956. battling.

  957. The principle

  958. of the book

  959. is which

  960. one am I

  961. truly?

  962. Which one

  963. is truly

  964. me?

  965. me?

  966. And you

  967. don't want

  968. to end

  969. up at

  970. the, in

  971. case you

  972. never read

  973. it, he

  974. kills

  975. himself.

  976. Because the

  977. evil one

  978. became more

  979. him.

  980. That became

  981. his true

  982. sense.

  983. But that's

  984. what we

  985. wrestle with.

  986. Which one

  987. is truly

  988. me?

  989. And

  990. particularly

  991. as a

  992. Christian?

  993. Am I

  994. a sinner

  995. or am I

  996. a saint?

  997. a saint?

  998. Before he

  999. was a

  1000. Christian,

  1001. Paul thought

  1002. he was

  1003. a saint.

  1004. Now that

  1005. he's a

  1006. Christian,

  1007. a saint,

  1008. right before

  1009. Jesus Christ,

  1010. he now

  1011. wrestles

  1012. with am I

  1013. actually a

  1014. sinner?

  1015. His sense

  1016. of his

  1017. sinfulness

  1018. is much

  1019. stronger and

  1020. more disturbing

  1021. to him

  1022. now.

  1023. So which

  1024. one is he?

  1025. Which one

  1026. is he?

  1027. The deepest

  1028. desire is

  1029. hard.

  1030. Am I a

  1031. sinner or

  1032. am I a

  1033. saint?

  1034. And the

  1035. point of

  1036. these verses

  1037. is that for

  1038. the Christian

  1039. that

  1040. question is

  1041. settled.

  1042. It's

  1043. settled.

  1044. Even

  1045. though the

  1046. battle continues

  1047. to rage,

  1048. the question,

  1049. the issue

  1050. is settled.

  1051. Verse 23,

  1052. the law

  1053. of God

  1054. is our

  1055. utmost

  1056. delight.

  1057. There is

  1058. still a

  1059. powerful

  1060. force of

  1061. sin and

  1062. rebellion

  1063. within me,

  1064. but those

  1065. desires are

  1066. not the

  1067. deepest

  1068. sense of

  1069. who I

  1070. am.

  1071. As

  1072. verse 20

  1073. says,

  1074. if I do

  1075. what I do

  1076. not want

  1077. to do,

  1078. it is no

  1079. longer I,

  1080. my deepest

  1081. sense who

  1082. does it,

  1083. but it

  1084. is sin

  1085. living in

  1086. me that

  1087. does it.

  1088. As we

  1089. saw last

  1090. week, a

  1091. Christian has

  1092. had a

  1093. identity

  1094. transformation.

  1095. A

  1096. Christian

  1097. really seeks

  1098. God and

  1099. loves his

  1100. law and

  1101. holiness.

  1102. Even

  1103. while sin

  1104. remains in

  1105. us with a

  1106. whole lot of

  1107. strength,

  1108. whole lot of

  1109. strength,

  1110. it no longer

  1111. controls our

  1112. personality and

  1113. our life.

  1114. That is our

  1115. weakness, our

  1116. inner conflict.

  1117. The strength

  1118. of the

  1119. remaining

  1120. corruption of

  1121. our lives

  1122. will still

  1123. lead us to

  1124. disobey God.

  1125. Even in

  1126. this, and

  1127. if this is

  1128. you right

  1129. now, and

  1130. very conscious

  1131. of your

  1132. sin, the

  1133. strength of

  1134. the remaining

  1135. corruption in

  1136. your life, the

  1137. sin in your

  1138. life, will

  1139. still lead

  1140. you to

  1141. disobey God

  1142. even in

  1143. the same

  1144. ways you

  1145. did prior

  1146. to you being

  1147. a Christian.

  1148. But now,

  1149. that

  1150. behaviour,

  1151. that sin,

  1152. goes against

  1153. your deepest

  1154. identity in

  1155. Christ.

  1156. Many are

  1157. puzzled, that

  1158. I think the

  1159. Paul seems

  1160. to write

  1161. here as

  1162. if he's

  1163. defeated.

  1164. He writes

  1165. in verse

  1166. 14, I

  1167. am unspiritual,

  1168. sold as a

  1169. slave to

  1170. sin.

  1171. I think he

  1172. is saying

  1173. that in

  1174. ourselves,

  1175. even as a

  1176. Christian, we

  1177. are still

  1178. incapable of

  1179. keeping the

  1180. law in

  1181. ourselves.

  1182. Notice that

  1183. he uses the

  1184. word I

  1185. numerous times

  1186. in these

  1187. verses.

  1188. He seems

  1189. to be saying

  1190. that in

  1191. himself,

  1192. left to

  1193. his own

  1194. devices,

  1195. he is

  1196. unable to

  1197. live as

  1198. he should.

  1199. Even

  1200. though there

  1201. is a new

  1202. identity in

  1203. Jesus,

  1204. a new

  1205. love,

  1206. a new

  1207. delight in

  1208. God's law,

  1209. a Christian

  1210. is still

  1211. incapable in

  1212. and of

  1213. themselves

  1214. of keeping

  1215. the law

  1216. in its

  1217. entirety,

  1218. keeping the

  1219. law and

  1220. all the

  1221. expectations

  1222. of the

  1223. law.

  1224. That's the

  1225. battle of the

  1226. Christian life.

  1227. life.

  1228. And it's

  1229. the battle

  1230. of the

  1231. Christian

  1232. life that

  1233. if you

  1234. are looking

  1235. just to

  1236. yourself and

  1237. your own

  1238. actions and

  1239. not to

  1240. Christ at

  1241. the same

  1242. time,

  1243. you will

  1244. feel

  1245. defeated.

  1246. You will

  1247. feel defeated.

  1248. And this

  1249. leads the

  1250. apostle Paul

  1251. and I

  1252. believe the

  1253. Christian to

  1254. the last

  1255. point, the

  1256. battle cry

  1257. that comes

  1258. with Christ.

  1259. verses 24

  1260. and 25.

  1261. These verses

  1262. here are both a

  1263. warning and a

  1264. comfort.

  1265. The first

  1266. warning is

  1267. that no one

  1268. ever gets so

  1269. advanced in

  1270. the Christian

  1271. life that

  1272. they no longer

  1273. have sin in

  1274. their life.

  1275. Get rid of

  1276. all notions

  1277. of perfectionism.

  1278. No, this

  1279. is the, I

  1280. mean, it's

  1281. easy to see

  1282. that in me,

  1283. but this is

  1284. the apostle

  1285. Paul speaking

  1286. here.

  1287. Right?

  1288. This is

  1289. Saint Paul

  1290. saying, I'm

  1291. battling with

  1292. sin in my

  1293. life.

  1294. Saint Paul,

  1295. right?

  1296. Not me,

  1297. Saint Paul.

  1298. Even he

  1299. has not

  1300. advanced in

  1301. the Christian

  1302. life that he

  1303. no longer has

  1304. to battle with

  1305. sin.

  1306. If we ever

  1307. think that we've

  1308. conquered our

  1309. sin and are

  1310. pretty good

  1311. Christians, it's

  1312. the first

  1313. indication of

  1314. self-deception.

  1315. if you ever

  1316. think that you

  1317. are a pretty

  1318. good Christian,

  1319. then that is

  1320. the indication

  1321. of self-deception.

  1322. The more we

  1323. grow as a

  1324. Christian, the

  1325. more we see

  1326. our sin.

  1327. The more we

  1328. become holy,

  1329. the less holy

  1330. we will feel.

  1331. That's the

  1332. battle of the

  1333. Christian life.

  1334. Even as we

  1335. make progress

  1336. against many

  1337. bad habits

  1338. and attitudes,

  1339. we will grow

  1340. more aware

  1341. of the

  1342. rebellious,

  1343. sinful,

  1344. deep roots

  1345. in our

  1346. hearts.

  1347. The second

  1348. warning, which

  1349. is linked to

  1350. that, is

  1351. that no one

  1352. grows to a

  1353. point where

  1354. they no longer

  1355. battle in.

  1356. It is

  1357. quite

  1358. important

  1359. that the

  1360. Christian

  1361. expects

  1362. life to

  1363. be an

  1364. internal

  1365. battle

  1366. against

  1367. two

  1368. selves.

  1369. That's

  1370. why this

  1371. talk is

  1372. called

  1373. Warfare

  1374. Within.

  1375. In fact, if

  1376. I may draw

  1377. upon my

  1378. past

  1379. experience

  1380. and past

  1381. profession,

  1382. a wounded

  1383. feral pig

  1384. is more

  1385. dangerous

  1386. than a

  1387. healthy and

  1388. a happy

  1389. one.

  1390. More

  1391. dangerous

  1392. than a

  1393. healthy and

  1394. happy one.

  1395. And so

  1396. it is

  1397. with sin.

  1398. Our new

  1399. identity

  1400. in Jesus

  1401. Christ

  1402. has

  1403. mortally

  1404. wounded

  1405. the sinful

  1406. nature

  1407. in us.

  1408. Killed

  1409. it completely

  1410. but mortally

  1411. wounded it

  1412. within us

  1413. and it

  1414. is stirred

  1415. up

  1416. to fight

  1417. back.

  1418. The great

  1419. comfort of

  1420. this passage

  1421. is that the

  1422. struggle

  1423. itself,

  1424. oh and if

  1425. you're a

  1426. Christian,

  1427. you're hanging

  1428. on to Christ

  1429. and you're

  1430. struggling with

  1431. your sin,

  1432. you hear

  1433. this,

  1434. the struggle

  1435. itself

  1436. is testimony

  1437. to our

  1438. new identity

  1439. in Jesus.

  1440. Jesus.

  1441. When we

  1442. struggle

  1443. with sin,

  1444. it is

  1445. typical to

  1446. think that

  1447. we are

  1448. such

  1449. terrible

  1450. Christians

  1451. and how

  1452. often people

  1453. are quick

  1454. to remind

  1455. you that

  1456. you're such

  1457. a terrible

  1458. Christian.

  1459. It's one

  1460. thing I think

  1461. to struggle

  1462. with it

  1463. internally,

  1464. it's very,

  1465. it's much

  1466. harder when

  1467. other people

  1468. join with

  1469. you and

  1470. affirm your

  1471. internal

  1472. struggle.

  1473. This

  1474. chapter

  1475. encourages us

  1476. that temptation

  1477. and conflict

  1478. with sin,

  1479. even relapses

  1480. into sin,

  1481. are not

  1482. inconsistent

  1483. with a

  1484. growing

  1485. Christian.

  1486. The

  1487. acknowledgement

  1488. and the

  1489. awareness of

  1490. the internal

  1491. battle

  1492. is

  1493. consistent

  1494. with a

  1495. growing

  1496. Christian.

  1497. You see,

  1498. the Christian

  1499. heart cries

  1500. two things

  1501. at the

  1502. same time.

  1503. There is

  1504. the desperate

  1505. cry of

  1506. discouragement

  1507. as we look

  1508. at our

  1509. own efforts

  1510. and our

  1511. own failing

  1512. and our

  1513. own sin.

  1514. It's the

  1515. cry of the

  1516. apostle Paul

  1517. in verse

  1518. 24,

  1519. what a

  1520. wretched

  1521. man I

  1522. am.

  1523. Who will

  1524. rescue me

  1525. from this

  1526. body that

  1527. is subject

  1528. to death?

  1529. You see,

  1530. when we

  1531. read God's

  1532. law properly

  1533. and look

  1534. at our

  1535. own hearts

  1536. honestly,

  1537. we can

  1538. only conclude

  1539. that we are

  1540. truly wretched.

  1541. God's

  1542. and when we

  1543. judge ourselves

  1544. by God's

  1545. standard

  1546. rather than

  1547. our own,

  1548. what a

  1549. wretched man

  1550. I am

  1551. is the

  1552. only

  1553. conclusion.

  1554. When we

  1555. stop comparing

  1556. ourselves with

  1557. other people

  1558. and look

  1559. instead to

  1560. a holy

  1561. God,

  1562. that's the

  1563. only

  1564. conclusion.

  1565. Without

  1566. accepting God's

  1567. devastating

  1568. critique of

  1569. human nature,

  1570. our own

  1571. hearts,

  1572. we will

  1573. never,

  1574. ever grasp

  1575. the glory

  1576. of the

  1577. gospel of

  1578. Jesus Christ

  1579. justification by

  1580. faith alone.

  1581. We will

  1582. never grasp

  1583. that.

  1584. We will

  1585. never understand

  1586. it as

  1587. beautiful and

  1588. glorious.

  1589. We will

  1590. never appreciate

  1591. the gospel of

  1592. a received

  1593. right standing

  1594. with God

  1595. only through

  1596. Jesus Christ,

  1597. only through

  1598. him.

  1599. It is only

  1600. when our

  1601. hearts truly

  1602. cry out

  1603. about our

  1604. wretchedness,

  1605. that we

  1606. can know

  1607. and experience

  1608. the hope,

  1609. the liberation

  1610. of looking

  1611. away from

  1612. ourselves to

  1613. what God

  1614. has done

  1615. for us in

  1616. Jesus Christ.

  1617. And so as

  1618. Paul cries

  1619. out,

  1620. not just

  1621. what a

  1622. wretched man

  1623. I am,

  1624. but who's

  1625. going to

  1626. rescue me

  1627. from this

  1628. body of

  1629. death?

  1630. Verse 25,

  1631. thanks be to

  1632. God.

  1633. Thanks be to

  1634. God who

  1635. delivers me

  1636. through Jesus

  1637. Christ,

  1638. our Lord.

  1639. God's

  1640. love for

  1641. us.

  1642. He said,

  1643. St. Paul

  1644. has got no

  1645. hope in

  1646. himself.

  1647. There is no

  1648. hope in

  1649. ourselves for

  1650. salvation.

  1651. No hope even

  1652. in our present

  1653. obedience.

  1654. No hope in

  1655. pursuit of

  1656. the well-being

  1657. of others.

  1658. No hope in

  1659. giving more

  1660. money.

  1661. No hope in

  1662. any form of

  1663. activity.

  1664. Everything

  1665. that we

  1666. have done,

  1667. everything that

  1668. you have

  1669. done,

  1670. good and

  1671. bad,

  1672. everything that

  1673. you are,

  1674. only merits

  1675. judgment.

  1676. Only

  1677. merits judgment.

  1678. That's what

  1679. Romans is

  1680. telling us.

  1681. Don't look at

  1682. your good

  1683. things and think

  1684. they're good.

  1685. There's a

  1686. deeper motive

  1687. that's going

  1688. on.

  1689. There's a

  1690. heart issue

  1691. going on

  1692. here.

  1693. Our only

  1694. hope is to

  1695. look to

  1696. Jesus dying

  1697. on the

  1698. cross for

  1699. us.

  1700. Our only

  1701. hope is to

  1702. rest in

  1703. his righteousness,

  1704. his right

  1705. standing before

  1706. God.

  1707. You see,

  1708. Jesus on

  1709. the cross

  1710. became

  1711. wretched.

  1712. He took

  1713. my sin,

  1714. your sin,

  1715. the sin of

  1716. this world

  1717. in the

  1718. depths of

  1719. his heart

  1720. and became

  1721. wretched

  1722. so that

  1723. you and

  1724. I might

  1725. receive his

  1726. righteousness.

  1727. We are

  1728. wretched,

  1729. but God is

  1730. not.

  1731. God is

  1732. and he

  1733. gives us

  1734. his right

  1735. standing

  1736. through

  1737. Jesus

  1738. Christ.

  1739. Jesus is

  1740. the one

  1741. who has

  1742. rescued us

  1743. and through

  1744. the Holy

  1745. Spirit he

  1746. is in the

  1747. process of

  1748. changing

  1749. us,

  1750. but that's

  1751. a battle

  1752. that we

  1753. will always

  1754. wrestle with

  1755. and he's

  1756. changing us

  1757. so that we

  1758. can enjoy

  1759. him

  1760. forever.

  1761. And that's

  1762. chapter 8

  1763. and that's

  1764. the next

  1765. couple of

  1766. weeks.

  1767. Thank you.
