  1. Morning everyone, great to be here. Keep your Bibles open there at Romans 11.

  2. Got a question for you to kick off with. When can a circle ever be a triangle?

  3. There we go. Discuss that. I'll give you 30 seconds.

  4. Is there any mathematicians in the room? I don't mean to explode your brain right now.

  5. When can a circle ever be a triangle?

  6. The actual technical answer is never. Never.

  7. They are two very two-dimensional shapes.

  8. There is no way possible to actually make a circle into a triangle without it losing its circle-ness.

  9. If you go and look up the definition of what a circle is and what a triangle is,

  10. it's not possible for either one of them to be made into the other without it losing its original identity and purpose.

  11. However, the two shapes can come together in such a way to create a three-dimensional object where you see a circle, you see a triangle, but it's actually a cone.

  12. And it will depend on which angle you are looking at it as to what you actually see.

  13. Two individual shapes, 2D shapes, can come together and make a more complex 3D shape.

  14. And depending on which way you look at it, you'll see one thing or you'll see the other.

  15. And such is the complexity of God's sovereignty and human responsibility working together.

  16. It is a complex issue.

  17. And in debating these matters over the centuries, it's not unusual to push either God's sovereignty or human responsibility to such a point that they lose their shape.

  18. Rather than holding them, as the Bible does, in balance together.

  19. God chooses those he will save through faith in the saving work of Jesus Christ.

  20. We are responsible for our rejection of him and the good news of Jesus Christ.

  21. The Bible declares that they are both true.

  22. The circle and the triangle, but they're actually working together.

  23. 100% true.

  24. Not 50%, 50%, not 75% or 95% and 5%.

  25. Both are 100% true at exactly the same time.

  26. It's God's mathematics, not Wikipedia's or mine, yours.

  27. Or to quote John Stott from his Romans commentary,

  28. if anybody is lost, the blame is theirs.

  29. But if anybody is saved, the credit is God's.

  30. This contains a mystery which our present knowledge cannot solve,

  31. but it is consistent with scripture, history and experience.

  32. It is a mystery.

  33. And in attempting to remove the mystery over the centuries,

  34. people have wandered into heresy on multiple occasions.

  35. So the Jews, as we've been reading,

  36. God's historic people are responsible for their refusal

  37. to put their trust in Jesus Christ.

  38. And they have not come to faith because God has not chosen to have mercy on them.

  39. They're both true.

  40. That's a summary of chapters 9 to 10,

  41. as we have so far read in Romans.

  42. So now we're up to chapter 11.

  43. And Paul is still wrestling with this big idea

  44. of whether God has rejected his historic people.

  45. The central argument in this chapter

  46. is God has not rejected his people, Israel,

  47. because the books are still open.

  48. And there is still an opportunity for them to embrace Jesus

  49. as their Lord and their Saviour.

  50. And therefore, the books are still open for us this morning

  51. as we gather here in person or online.

  52. There is still an opportunity.

  53. So I've got three things to say,

  54. the trustworthy God, the saving God, and the praiseworthy God,

  55. if you're someone who likes to take notes.

  56. Chapter 11 opens with a familiar question

  57. of whether God has rejected his people, Israel,

  58. and the short answer is no, then a long explanation.

  59. And Paul, in the first number of verses,

  60. gives four arguments as to back up the short answer.

  61. And the first is the Paul argument in verse 1.

  62. That is, Paul himself is a Jew

  63. who's come to faith in Jesus Christ.

  64. This blasphemous Christian persecuting Paul

  65. is a Jew who God has not given up on.

  66. And he's now being used by God

  67. to multiply his gospel work.

  68. The second argument is in verse 2,

  69. the election argument.

  70. Paul is saying that God has determined,

  71. he has foreordained to bring Jews to faith in him.

  72. Those he has chosen will not fail to believe.

  73. The third argument, verses 2 and 4,

  74. 2 to 4 is the Elijah argument.

  75. It's a historical argument.

  76. 1 Corinthians, sorry, 1 Kings 19.

  77. We read that Elijah thought that God

  78. had abandoned his people too,

  79. had rejected them,

  80. and he was the only one left.

  81. And yet, as we find out in the chapter,

  82. there are many left.

  83. And there has always been a faithful remnant

  84. amongst God's historical people

  85. who have trusted by grace.

  86. The fourth argument is in verses 5 and 6,

  87. and that's the grace argument.

  88. What guarantees that there will always be

  89. a faithful remnant

  90. is not that there will always be a group,

  91. a group of good people

  92. amongst God's historic people,

  93. a group of smart people

  94. amongst God's historic people

  95. who believe,

  96. but because God is always gracious.

  97. Then in verse 7,

  98. Paul takes us back to his point

  99. in chapter 9, verse 6,

  100. where he says,

  101. for not all who are descended from Israel

  102. are Israel.

  103. So in verse 7,

  104. he makes the point,

  105. it is not God who has rejected his people,

  106. but it's his people who have rejected him.

  107. Have a look at it with me.

  108. What then?

  109. What the people of Israel sought so earnestly,

  110. they did not obtain.

  111. The elect among them,

  112. the elect among them did,

  113. but the others were hardened.

  114. And last week in chapter 10, verse 3,

  115. we read that Israel

  116. did not know the righteousness of God

  117. and sought to establish their own.

  118. So Paul tells us here

  119. that they sought righteousness earnestly.

  120. God's historic people

  121. sought a right relationship with God earnestly.

  122. They earnestly pursued it.

  123. A right standing,

  124. a right relationship with God,

  125. but they did it on their terms.

  126. Instead of receiving

  127. a right relationship with God

  128. as a gift through Jesus Christ,

  129. they attempted to establish their own,

  130. to work for it themselves.

  131. Israel earnestly sought

  132. a right relationship with God,

  133. but they did it the wrong way.

  134. And that is the case for all of them,

  135. except for those that God had chosen.

  136. And as a result,

  137. most of God's historic people were hardened.

  138. And the hardening here,

  139. just to remind us of the last couple of weeks,

  140. is a legal punishment

  141. for having a proud heart

  142. that rejects the good news

  143. of God's grace in Jesus Christ.

  144. In verse 8,

  145. Paul again quotes from the Old Testament

  146. to show us how it has been,

  147. always been.

  148. And what Paul's doing here,

  149. is he quoting Isaiah.

  150. And Isaiah himself is quoting Moses.

  151. That is, what we have here

  152. is both Paul in the New Testament

  153. is quoting the law and the prophets.

  154. And Paul is saying,

  155. Moses warned Israel in his day

  156. that their rebellion resulted in God

  157. giving them a spiritual blindness.

  158. Isaiah in his day told Israel

  159. that he had continued through their history

  160. a spiritual blindness

  161. because they pursued righteousness

  162. on their terms.

  163. And now,

  164. the apostle Paul

  165. is telling the Roman church

  166. it's happening again.

  167. Right through history,

  168. the pursuit of righteousness

  169. on our own terms.

  170. And so,

  171. in verses 9 and 10,

  172. we have this spiritual blindness

  173. is a retribution.

  174. It's a punishment

  175. that exactly fits the crime.

  176. Hardening

  177. is a fitting punishment

  178. for a proud heart.

  179. You see,

  180. pride and self-centeredness

  181. lead to hardness

  182. and lovelessness.

  183. Rejection of God

  184. leads to rejection from God.

  185. It's a just punishment.

  186. But these verses

  187. are quite confronting.

  188. The very people

  189. who had earnestly,

  190. diligently,

  191. zealously

  192. sought a relationship

  193. with God

  194. were the same people

  195. who rejected

  196. his love for them.

  197. It's an amazing dynamic.

  198. And the amazing dynamic

  199. is that a person

  200. can try

  201. so desperately

  202. hard

  203. to please God

  204. with all of their life,

  205. to serve him

  206. with all of their life,

  207. and end up

  208. resisting

  209. the very idea

  210. of God's mercy

  211. on their life.

  212. And you find that

  213. an incredible dynamic.

  214. most people

  215. who believe

  216. in God

  217. conclude

  218. that God

  219. is transcendent.

  220. You don't have to be Christian

  221. to do this.

  222. They believe

  223. that God is transcendent,

  224. that he's powerful,

  225. that he's good

  226. in some kind of way.

  227. And therefore,

  228. the assumption

  229. with human wisdom

  230. is that we need

  231. to approach this God,

  232. we need to appease

  233. this God

  234. in some kind of way.

  235. And I need

  236. to improve myself.

  237. in some kind of way

  238. in order to appease

  239. this God.

  240. And such people

  241. generally find

  242. any concept

  243. of free,

  244. total,

  245. unconditional

  246. acceptance

  247. dishonouring

  248. to God.

  249. You may have

  250. thought it yourself.

  251. you may have

  252. even heard

  253. someone say

  254. something like

  255. the idea

  256. that a convicted

  257. murderer

  258. could just say

  259. words of repentance

  260. and be right

  261. with God,

  262. just like the good

  263. religious person

  264. who's volunteered

  265. themselves

  266. in the,

  267. you know,

  268. the local hospital

  269. all of their life,

  270. like as if somehow

  271. it's a level playing field

  272. for all people.

  273. people,

  274. that's just illogical.

  275. How insulting

  276. to my life

  277. of good deeds.

  278. How insulting

  279. to common decency.

  280. How insulting

  281. to God.

  282. And yet the Christian

  283. gospel,

  284. the core of the

  285. Christian faith

  286. is in fact

  287. an assault

  288. on

  289. our

  290. religious

  291. works.

  292. It appears

  293. in fact

  294. on one level

  295. to be assault

  296. on good character

  297. and on God.

  298. Through a real

  299. desire to please

  300. God

  301. mixed with a

  302. deep pride

  303. and a

  304. self-confidence

  305. the human

  306. heart

  307. becomes

  308. vaccinated

  309. against

  310. and hatred

  311. towards

  312. in fact

  313. the mercy

  314. and the love

  315. of God

  316. through Jesus Christ.

  317. That is the

  318. normal

  319. human

  320. condition.

  321. We like

  322. to bring

  323. God down

  324. and elevate

  325. ourselves

  326. up.

  327. And that's

  328. the case

  329. with so

  330. many

  331. religious

  332. people.

  333. Where a

  334. right standing

  335. with God

  336. is seriously

  337. and earnestly

  338. sought.

  339. Seriously

  340. and earnestly

  341. sought.

  342. And yet at the

  343. same time

  344. his loving

  345. offer of that

  346. right standing

  347. as a free

  348. gift

  349. is rejected.

  350. It may even

  351. describe you

  352. right now

  353. where you're

  354. sitting right now

  355. in this room

  356. or on

  357. screen

  358. tuning in.

  359. Christian faith

  360. motivated

  361. almost

  362. completely

  363. by fear

  364. by guilt

  365. or a need

  366. for approval.

  367. If anything

  368. else that

  369. Romans has

  370. taught us

  371. now is the

  372. time to lay

  373. that down.

  374. Now is the

  375. time to

  376. surrender your

  377. heart to

  378. Christ.

  379. now is the

  380. time to

  381. confess a

  382. heart that

  383. is not

  384. humbled.

  385. A heart

  386. that is

  387. proud that

  388. set itself

  389. up ultimately

  390. against God's

  391. grace and

  392. his mercy.

  393. Do it

  394. today.

  395. Come to

  396. Jesus.

  397. Jesus.

  398. So the

  399. majority of

  400. Israel has

  401. rejected God.

  402. Historic

  403. Israel.

  404. Ethnic

  405. Israel has

  406. rejected God.

  407. So is that

  408. it?

  409. Is that the

  410. end of the

  411. story?

  412. Are they now

  413. beyond salvation?

  414. That's the

  415. essence of the

  416. question from

  417. verse 11

  418. onwards.

  419. Again,

  420. Paul again

  421. gives a

  422. definitive no

  423. and then

  424. goes on for

  425. an explanation.

  426. Then he

  427. outlines three

  428. stages of

  429. God's plan of

  430. salvation for

  431. Israel.

  432. The first

  433. stage is the

  434. stage that

  435. Paul himself

  436. is currently

  437. in and that

  438. is one of

  439. hostility to

  440. the Christian

  441. message.

  442. Yes, he

  443. says, many

  444. early Jews

  445. believed but

  446. the majority

  447. have rejected.

  448. Majority have

  449. rejected the

  450. Christian faith,

  451. rejected Jesus

  452. as their

  453. Messiah.

  454. And if this

  455. rejection, he

  456. says, had

  457. not happened,

  458. the early

  459. Christian Jews

  460. could have

  461. easily

  462. concluded

  463. that the

  464. gospel was

  465. only for

  466. ethnic Israel.

  467. No need

  468. for the

  469. Gentile world

  470. to know

  471. of this.

  472. And you

  473. see this

  474. happening in

  475. the book of

  476. Acts.

  477. Gospel is

  478. preached,

  479. first of

  480. all, to

  481. a synagogue.

  482. The Jewish

  483. community is

  484. fractured with

  485. some believing,

  486. some are

  487. hostile.

  488. Those who

  489. come to

  490. faith then

  491. go to the

  492. Gentiles to

  493. see them

  494. embracing the

  495. Christian faith.

  496. And as a

  497. result, the

  498. early church,

  499. right from its

  500. inception, is a

  501. multi-ethnic

  502. church.

  503. This leads to

  504. stage two.

  505. As they see the

  506. church growing and

  507. Gentiles coming to

  508. faith, in verse

  509. 11, we are

  510. told, these

  511. Gentile converts

  512. make Israel

  513. envious.

  514. Paul repeats

  515. it himself in

  516. verse 14.

  517. I take pride in

  518. my ministry in

  519. the hope that I

  520. may somehow

  521. arouse my own

  522. people to envy

  523. and to save

  524. some of them.

  525. Now, we

  526. normally would

  527. think of envy in

  528. a negative

  529. sense, which

  530. as a general

  531. rule, it is.

  532. But I think

  533. that John

  534. Stott, writing

  535. in his Romans

  536. commentary,

  537. captures here

  538. Paul's thinking

  539. in a much

  540. better way,

  541. where he

  542. writes,

  543. not all envy

  544. is tainted

  545. with selfishness

  546. because it is

  547. not always

  548. either a

  549. grudging

  550. discontent or

  551. a sinful

  552. covetousness.

  553. At base,

  554. envy is the

  555. desire to

  556. have for

  557. oneself something

  558. possessed by

  559. another.

  560. And whether

  561. envy is good

  562. or evil

  563. depends on

  564. the nature

  565. of the

  566. something

  567. desired and

  568. on whether

  569. one has a

  570. right of its

  571. possession.

  572. If that

  573. something is

  574. in itself

  575. evil or

  576. it belongs

  577. to somebody

  578. else and

  579. we have no

  580. right to it,

  581. then the

  582. envy is

  583. sinful.

  584. But if

  585. the

  586. something

  587. desired is

  588. in itself

  589. good,

  590. a blessing

  591. from God,

  592. which he

  593. means all

  594. people to

  595. enjoy,

  596. then to

  597. covet it

  598. and to

  599. envy those

  600. who have

  601. it is not

  602. at all

  603. unworthy.

  604. This kind

  605. of desire

  606. is right

  607. in itself

  608. and to

  609. arouse it

  610. can be a

  611. realistic

  612. motive for

  613. ministry.

  614. I think

  615. that's a

  616. great

  617. explanation

  618. of what

  619. Paul's

  620. trying to

  621. do here.

  622. God's

  623. historic

  624. people will

  625. see many

  626. of God's

  627. historic

  628. promises to

  629. them being

  630. fulfilled in

  631. the Gentiles

  632. and that

  633. will prompt

  634. them to

  635. want to

  636. believe it.

  637. Here's the

  638. remarkable thing

  639. about God's

  640. plan.

  641. Just as

  642. the Gentiles

  643. could only

  644. have heard

  645. the gospel

  646. because Israel

  647. had largely

  648. rejected

  649. Jesus,

  650. now the

  651. Jews can

  652. only believe

  653. because those

  654. who accepted

  655. Jesus were

  656. largely Gentiles.

  657. Paul then

  658. writes that

  659. the third

  660. and the

  661. final stage

  662. of blessings

  663. for the

  664. Jews is

  665. sometime in

  666. the future.

  667. in verse

  668. 12,

  669. he seems

  670. to have a

  671. vision of

  672. a significant

  673. number of

  674. them coming

  675. to faith in

  676. Jesus Christ

  677. which we see

  678. again at the

  679. end of the

  680. chapter.

  681. If their

  682. unbelieving

  683. has had a

  684. remarkable

  685. benefit,

  686. imagine the

  687. benefit of

  688. their believing

  689. in Jesus.

  690. Jesus.

  691. In verses

  692. 17 to

  693. 24,

  694. Paul uses

  695. an olive

  696. tree as

  697. an illustration

  698. if you like

  699. to bring

  700. clarity on

  701. how God's

  702. salvation plan

  703. works.

  704. And this

  705. is also a

  706. warning to

  707. the Gentile

  708. Christians that

  709. are there.

  710. Verse 17,

  711. if some

  712. of the

  713. branches have

  714. been taken

  715. off and

  716. you,

  717. though a

  718. wild olive

  719. shoot,

  720. have been

  721. grafted in

  722. among the

  723. others and

  724. now share

  725. in the

  726. nourishing sap

  727. of the

  728. olive root.

  729. Now,

  730. to get what

  731. he's saying

  732. here,

  733. there's a bit

  734. of a

  735. horticultural

  736. lesson to

  737. understand what

  738. he's getting

  739. at.

  740. And who

  741. better to

  742. understand a

  743. horticultural

  744. lesson but

  745. to turn to

  746. a Scottish

  747. New Testament

  748. scholar,

  749. William Ramsey,

  750. he writes

  751. in his

  752. commentary,

  753. in exceptional

  754. circumstances,

  755. it is customary

  756. to reinvigorate

  757. an olive

  758. tree which

  759. is ceasing

  760. to bear

  761. fruit by

  762. grafting

  763. into it

  764. a shoot

  765. of a

  766. wild

  767. olive

  768. tree so

  769. that the

  770. sap of

  771. the tree

  772. enables,

  773. ennobles,

  774. enables,

  775. this wild

  776. shoot

  777. to in

  778. fact grow

  779. while at

  780. the same

  781. time

  782. encouraging

  783. the original

  784. olive tree

  785. to bear

  786. fruit.

  787. This wild

  788. olive branch

  789. is a

  790. dynamic

  791. and a

  792. growing

  793. thing

  794. in and

  795. of itself

  796. but it

  797. can draw

  798. and produce

  799. life

  800. only because

  801. it is grafted

  802. into an

  803. olive tree

  804. because it's

  805. there,

  806. it draws

  807. the nourishment,

  808. it needs

  809. full life

  810. and at the

  811. same time

  812. that that's

  813. happening,

  814. the presence

  815. of the wild

  816. olive branch

  817. renews

  818. the

  819. original

  820. olive tree

  821. in such

  822. a way

  823. that it's

  824. invigorated

  825. and it

  826. starts again

  827. to bear

  828. fruit.

  829. Verse 13

  830. tells us

  831. that Paul

  832. is applying

  833. that metaphor

  834. specifically

  835. to the

  836. Gentiles.

  837. They are

  838. the wild

  839. olive shoots,

  840. they've been

  841. grafted into

  842. God's historic

  843. people and

  844. all its

  845. promises.

  846. the Gentiles

  847. are being

  848. grafted in

  849. so that

  850. they might

  851. be nourished

  852. by the

  853. giving gospel

  854. of justification

  855. by faith

  856. which has

  857. always been

  858. the faith

  859. of God's

  860. historic

  861. people ever

  862. since Abraham

  863. right through.

  864. They've now

  865. been included

  866. in justification

  867. by faith

  868. and so

  869. the lesson

  870. here for

  871. the Gentile

  872. believers

  873. are growing

  874. humility.

  875. You're not

  876. smarter

  877. than they

  878. are.

  879. You've not

  880. seen something

  881. or got

  882. softer hearts.

  883. The Gentiles

  884. must not

  885. boast.

  886. Verse 18

  887. Do not

  888. consider yourself

  889. to be superior

  890. to those

  891. other branches.

  892. If you do

  893. consider this

  894. you do not

  895. support the

  896. root

  897. but the

  898. root

  899. supports

  900. you.

  901. You will

  902. say then

  903. branches

  904. were

  905. broken

  906. off

  907. so

  908. that

  909. I

  910. could

  911. be

  912. grafted

  913. in

  914. granted

  915. but they

  916. were

  917. broken

  918. off

  919. because

  920. of

  921. unbelief

  922. and you

  923. stand

  924. by faith.

  925. Do not

  926. be arrogant

  927. but

  928. tremble

  929. for if

  930. God

  931. did not

  932. spare

  933. the

  934. natural

  935. branches

  936. he

  937. will

  938. not

  939. spare

  940. you

  941. never

  942. and so

  943. a genuine

  944. response

  945. to the

  946. good news

  947. of the

  948. gospel

  949. is a

  950. reverent

  951. fear.

  952. Verse 22

  953. calls us

  954. to meditate

  955. on the

  956. kindness

  957. and the

  958. sternness

  959. of God

  960. that is

  961. justification

  962. by faith

  963. God's grace

  964. to us

  965. through his

  966. sovereignty

  967. ought

  968. never

  969. ever

  970. ever

  971. lead to

  972. presumption.

  973. We see

  974. throughout

  975. Romans

  976. and the

  977. Bible

  978. the

  979. ongoing

  980. problem

  981. of

  982. presumption.

  983. We saw

  984. it in

  985. chapter 6

  986. and 7

  987. presumption

  988. God

  989. saves me

  990. he's

  991. sovereign

  992. I don't

  993. need to

  994. do

  995. anything

  996. presumption

  997. though

  998. Israel

  999. were

  1000. God's

  1001. chosen

  1002. people

  1003. they

  1004. started

  1005. to

  1006. think

  1007. they

  1008. were

  1009. the

  1010. choice

  1011. people

  1012. they

  1013. became

  1014. confident

  1015. that

  1016. they

  1017. were

  1018. in

  1019. no

  1020. matter

  1021. how

  1022. they

  1023. lived

  1024. simply

  1025. because

  1026. Abraham

  1027. was

  1028. their

  1029. father

  1030. they

  1031. became

  1032. proud

  1033. and

  1034. looked

  1035. down

  1036. on

  1037. others

  1038. and

  1039. Paul

  1040. is

  1041. calling

  1042. these

  1043. Gentile

  1044. believers

  1045. not

  1046. to

  1047. fall

  1048. in

  1049. the

  1050. same

  1051. presumption

  1052. of

  1053. historic

  1054. Israel

  1055. so

  1056. again

  1057. verse

  1058. 22

  1059. consider

  1060. therefore

  1061. the

  1062. kindness

  1063. and

  1064. the

  1065. sternness

  1066. of

  1067. God

  1068. sternness

  1069. to

  1070. those

  1071. who

  1072. fell

  1073. but

  1074. kindness

  1075. to

  1076. you

  1077. provided

  1078. that

  1079. you

  1080. continue

  1081. in

  1082. his

  1083. kindness

  1084. human

  1085. responsibility

  1086. work at

  1087. it

  1088. otherwise

  1089. you too

  1090. will be

  1091. cut off

  1092. the only

  1093. way

  1094. we know

  1095. that God's

  1096. sovereign

  1097. love is

  1098. upon us

  1099. is that

  1100. we

  1101. continue

  1102. we

  1103. persevere

  1104. in

  1105. seeking

  1106. to be

  1107. like

  1108. Jesus

  1109. until

  1110. the

  1111. day

  1112. we

  1113. meet

  1114. Jesus

  1115. it's

  1116. not a

  1117. circle

  1118. or a

  1119. triangle

  1120. it's a

  1121. cone

  1122. if

  1123. the

  1124. continuing

  1125. disappears

  1126. we

  1127. start

  1128. living

  1129. for

  1130. ourselves

  1131. and

  1132. living

  1133. sin

  1134. and

  1135. start

  1136. to rely

  1137. on our

  1138. own

  1139. performance

  1140. our own

  1141. theological

  1142. heritage

  1143. marriage

  1144. we

  1145. start

  1146. relying

  1147. upon

  1148. those

  1149. things

  1150. for

  1151. relationship

  1152. with

  1153. God

  1154. then

  1155. we

  1156. will

  1157. and

  1158. we

  1159. should

  1160. begin

  1161. to

  1162. wonder

  1163. if

  1164. his

  1165. kindness

  1166. is

  1167. still

  1168. upon

  1169. us

  1170. if

  1171. we

  1172. have

  1173. faith

  1174. in

  1175. Jesus

  1176. Christ

  1177. we

  1178. can

  1179. be

  1180. assured

  1181. and

  1182. confident

  1183. but

  1184. we

  1185. must

  1186. never

  1187. be

  1188. arrogant

  1189. and

  1190. proud

  1191. assured

  1192. and

  1193. confident

  1194. but

  1195. never

  1196. arrogant

  1197. and

  1198. proud

  1199. Paul

  1200. closes

  1201. off

  1202. this

  1203. section

  1204. by

  1205. revealing

  1206. a

  1207. great

  1208. mystery

  1209. it

  1210. is

  1211. designed

  1212. to

  1213. stop

  1214. the

  1215. Gentiles

  1216. from

  1217. being

  1218. conceited

  1219. when

  1220. they

  1221. look

  1222. at the

  1223. failure

  1224. of

  1225. ethnic

  1226. Israel

  1227. to

  1228. embrace

  1229. Jesus

  1230. Christ

  1231. as

  1232. their

  1233. Lord

  1234. and

  1235. Saviour

  1236. in

  1237. short

  1238. Paul's

  1239. language

  1240. in

  1241. writing

  1242. about

  1243. that

  1244. mystery

  1245. allows

  1246. for

  1247. the

  1248. possibility

  1249. of

  1250. a

  1251. steady

  1252. but

  1253. growing

  1254. flow

  1255. towards

  1256. Jesus

  1257. amongst

  1258. his

  1259. own

  1260. historic

  1261. people

  1262. ethnic

  1263. people

  1264. and

  1265. so

  1266. he

  1267. says

  1268. here

  1269. the

  1270. Jewish

  1271. unbelievers

  1272. are to

  1273. be viewed

  1274. always

  1275. with

  1276. hope

  1277. always

  1278. with

  1279. hope

  1280. the

  1281. Christian

  1282. must

  1283. say to

  1284. themselves

  1285. over

  1286. and over

  1287. again

  1288. I

  1289. disobeyed

  1290. God

  1291. I

  1292. refuse

  1293. to

  1294. believe

  1295. the

  1296. gospel

  1297. but

  1298. now

  1299. I'm

  1300. a

  1301. Christian

  1302. I'm

  1303. a

  1304. child

  1305. of

  1306. God

  1307. I'm

  1308. an

  1309. inheritor

  1310. of

  1311. all

  1312. his

  1313. historic

  1314. promises

  1315. to

  1316. his

  1317. people

  1318. Israel

  1319. I

  1320. am

  1321. here

  1322. in

  1323. part

  1324. because

  1325. the

  1326. gospel

  1327. reached

  1328. beyond

  1329. disbelieving

  1330. Israel

  1331. and so

  1332. if

  1333. God

  1334. can

  1335. reach

  1336. me

  1337. even

  1338. me

  1339. in

  1340. his

  1341. mercy

  1342. through

  1343. a

  1344. Jew

  1345. and

  1346. through

  1347. their

  1348. disobedience

  1349. he

  1350. can

  1351. certainly

  1352. reach

  1353. them

  1354. through

  1355. his

  1356. mercy

  1357. and

  1358. through

  1359. my

  1360. faith

  1361. the

  1362. mystery

  1363. is

  1364. that

  1365. God

  1366. uses

  1367. the

  1368. Jews

  1369. to

  1370. reach

  1371. the

  1372. Gentiles

  1373. and

  1374. the

  1375. Gentiles

  1376. to

  1377. reach

  1378. the

  1379. Jews

  1380. that

  1381. in

  1382. itself

  1383. is

  1384. a

  1385. grounding

  1386. for

  1387. a

  1388. multi

  1389. ethnic

  1390. church

  1391. all

  1392. people

  1393. Jew

  1394. and

  1395. Gentile

  1396. have

  1397. been

  1398. disobedient

  1399. and

  1400. are

  1401. lost

  1402. and

  1403. yet

  1404. all

  1405. people

  1406. found

  1407. by

  1408. God's

  1409. mercy

  1410. so if

  1411. you're

  1412. someone who

  1413. takes

  1414. notes

  1415. maybe

  1416. write

  1417. this

  1418. one

  1419. down

  1420. as a

  1421. bit

  1422. of a

  1423. summary

  1424. of

  1425. 9

  1426. to

  1427. 11

  1428. God's

  1429. mercy

  1430. does

  1431. not

  1432. come

  1433. to

  1434. all

  1435. without

  1436. exception

  1437. but

  1438. it

  1439. does

  1440. come

  1441. to

  1442. all

  1443. without

  1444. distinction

  1445. God's

  1446. mercy

  1447. does

  1448. not

  1449. come

  1450. to

  1451. all

  1452. without

  1453. exception

  1454. but

  1455. it

  1456. does

  1457. come

  1458. to

  1459. all

  1460. without

  1461. distinction

  1462. distinction

  1463. this

  1464. causes

  1465. Paul

  1466. to

  1467. pause

  1468. he

  1469. has

  1470. carried

  1471. this

  1472. idea

  1473. of

  1474. God's

  1475. sovereignty

  1476. and

  1477. human

  1478. responsibility

  1479. to the

  1480. edge

  1481. as far

  1482. as

  1483. knowledge

  1484. has

  1485. taken

  1486. him

  1487. as far

  1488. as

  1489. revelation

  1490. has

  1491. taken

  1492. him

  1493. as far

  1494. as

  1495. God

  1496. has

  1497. wanted

  1498. him

  1499. to

  1500. know

  1501. he's

  1502. gone

  1503. to

  1504. the

  1505. edge

  1506. of

  1507. the

  1508. earth

  1509. sailed

  1510. to

  1511. the

  1512. end

  1513. and

  1514. if

  1515. there

  1516. is

  1517. more

  1518. to

  1519. know

  1520. of

  1521. God

  1522. which

  1523. there

  1524. is

  1525. God's

  1526. chosen

  1527. not to

  1528. reveal

  1529. it

  1530. at

  1531. this

  1532. point

  1533. and

  1534. there's

  1535. only

  1536. one

  1537. thing

  1538. left

  1539. to

  1540. do

  1541. and

  1542. that

  1543. is

  1544. for

  1545. a

  1546. heart

  1547. to

  1548. be

  1549. lifted

  1550. a

  1551. mind

  1552. to

  1553. be

  1554. lifted

  1555. and

  1556. to

  1557. overflow

  1558. in

  1559. praise

  1560. of

  1561. this

  1562. God

  1563. the

  1564. God

  1565. of

  1566. the

  1567. wonderful

  1568. of

  1569. the

  1570. mysterious

  1571. as

  1572. he

  1573. draws

  1574. this

  1575. to

  1576. a

  1577. close

  1578. recall

  1579. God

  1580. here

  1581. in

  1582. the

  1583. first

  1584. place

  1585. don't

  1586. forget

  1587. at

  1588. the

  1589. end

  1590. of

  1591. chapter

  1592. eight

  1593. we

  1594. have

  1595. declaring

  1596. that

  1597. there

  1598. is

  1599. no

  1600. in

  1601. no

  1602. uncertain

  1603. terms

  1604. whatsoever

  1605. that

  1606. God's

  1607. promises

  1608. to

  1609. his

  1610. to

  1611. believers

  1612. in

  1613. Jesus

  1614. Christ

  1615. are

  1616. absolutely

  1617. rock

  1618. solid

  1619. you

  1620. can

  1621. be

  1622. confident

  1623. of

  1624. your

  1625. salvation

  1626. in

  1627. Jesus

  1628. Christ

  1629. nothing

  1630. he

  1631. says

  1632. can

  1633. separate

  1634. us

  1635. from

  1636. Jesus

  1637. God's

  1638. word

  1639. is

  1640. true

  1641. it

  1642. is

  1643. reliable

  1644. it

  1645. is

  1646. consistent

  1647. God's

  1648. promises

  1649. are

  1650. always

  1651. completed

  1652. and

  1653. fulfilled

  1654. not

  1655. one

  1656. single

  1657. bit

  1658. falls

  1659. to

  1660. the

  1661. ground

  1662. God's

  1663. chain

  1664. of

  1665. salvation

  1666. as

  1667. as

  1668. Aidan

  1669. said

  1670. is

  1671. unbreakable

  1672. those

  1673. who

  1674. have

  1675. been

  1676. elect

  1677. will

  1678. be

  1679. glorified

  1680. and so

  1681. we start

  1682. beginning

  1683. of chapter

  1684. nine

  1685. what about

  1686. Israel

  1687. then

  1688. you know

  1689. has

  1690. God

  1691. failed

  1692. them

  1693. has

  1694. God's

  1695. plan

  1696. of

  1697. salvation

  1698. failed

  1699. that's

  1700. the

  1701. undercurrent

  1702. of all

  1703. of

  1704. nine

  1705. to

  1706. eleven

  1707. and

  1708. that

  1709. issue

  1710. as

  1711. I

  1712. said

  1713. at

  1714. the

  1715. beginning

  1716. is

  1717. a

  1718. deeply

  1719. personal

  1720. issue

  1721. for

  1722. the

  1723. Jewish

  1724. Paul

  1725. a

  1726. deeply

  1727. personal

  1728. issue

  1729. he

  1730. is

  1731. at

  1732. the

  1733. beginning

  1734. of

  1735. chapter

  1736. nine

  1737. in

  1738. deep

  1739. anguish

  1740. about

  1741. his

  1742. people

  1743. deep

  1744. anguish

  1745. this

  1746. is

  1747. not

  1748. an

  1749. intellectual

  1750. exercise

  1751. for

  1752. him

  1753. this

  1754. is

  1755. not

  1756. a

  1757. lecture

  1758. room

  1759. where

  1760. we

  1761. got

  1762. an

  1763. exam

  1764. to

  1765. complete

  1766. at

  1767. the

  1768. end

  1769. of

  1770. this

  1771. understanding

  1772. God's

  1773. sovereignty

  1774. and

  1775. human

  1776. responsibility

  1777. this

  1778. is

  1779. not

  1780. a

  1781. book

  1782. that

  1783. he's

  1784. writing

  1785. for

  1786. distribution

  1787. per

  1788. se

  1789. so

  1790. that

  1791. he

  1792. can

  1793. sell

  1794. things

  1795. this

  1796. is

  1797. a

  1798. deeply

  1799. personal

  1800. issue

  1801. he's

  1802. in

  1803. anguish

  1804. in

  1805. chapter

  1806. nine

  1807. and

  1808. at

  1809. the

  1810. end

  1811. of

  1812. chapter

  1813. 11

  1814. he

  1815. just

  1816. breaks

  1817. out

  1818. in

  1819. spontaneous

  1820. worship

  1821. and

  1822. there

  1823. are

  1824. things

  1825. we

  1826. can

  1827. learn

  1828. from

  1829. these

  1830. verses

  1831. but

  1832. I'm

  1833. going to

  1834. throw

  1835. up

  1836. four

  1837. firstly

  1838. there

  1839. is

  1840. no

  1841. worship

  1842. without

  1843. truth

  1844. Paul

  1845. is

  1846. quoting

  1847. scripture

  1848. as he

  1849. praises

  1850. God

  1851. spontaneously

  1852. in

  1853. verse

  1854. 34

  1855. he quotes

  1856. from

  1857. Isaiah

  1858. 40

  1859. 13

  1860. and

  1861. in

  1862. verse

  1863. 35

  1864. he quotes

  1865. from

  1866. Job

    Job 41:11

  1867. 41

  1868. verse

  1869. 11

  1870. knowing

  1871. scripture

  1872. intimately

  1873. makes

  1874. an

  1875. enormous

  1876. difference

  1877. both

  1878. in the

  1879. ignition

  1880. of praise

  1881. in the

  1882. heart

  1883. and

  1884. in the

  1885. expression

  1886. of the

  1887. praise

  1888. that comes

  1889. out of

  1890. your

  1891. mouth

  1892. many

  1893. books

  1894. will

  1895. teach

  1896. meditation

  1897. and

  1898. spiritual

  1899. techniques

  1900. to

  1901. centre

  1902. on

  1903. things

  1904. like

  1905. visualisations

  1906. of

  1907. incidences

  1908. of

  1909. one's

  1910. past

  1911. life

  1912. or

  1913. visualisation

  1914. of

  1915. phrases

  1916. or

  1917. images

  1918. or

  1919. even

  1920. of

  1921. nothing

  1922. at

  1923. all

  1924. in

  1925. fact

  1926. there's

  1927. a lot

  1928. of

  1929. meditation

  1930. that says

  1931. you

  1932. got to

  1933. get to

  1934. a point

  1935. where you

  1936. don't

  1937. visualise

  1938. anything

  1939. and just

  1940. nothing

  1941. worship

  1942. of the

  1943. creator

  1944. God

  1945. the biblical

  1946. is totally

  1947. different

  1948. than that

  1949. worship

  1950. should not

  1951. come

  1952. from

  1953. meditation

  1954. in

  1955. general

  1956. or of

  1957. nothing

  1958. in

  1959. particular

  1960. but

  1961. through

  1962. the

  1963. meditation

  1964. of

  1965. scripture

  1966. specifically

  1967. the

  1968. bible

  1969. must

  1970. always

  1971. be

  1972. the

  1973. centre

  1974. of

  1975. any

  1976. public

  1977. or

  1978. private

  1979. praise

  1980. and

  1981. worship

  1982. secondly

  1983. there

  1984. is no

  1985. teaching

  1986. there

  1987. should

  1988. be

  1989. no

  1990. teaching

  1991. or

  1992. study

  1993. of

  1994. truth

  1995. without

  1996. worship

  1997. that's

  1998. the

  1999. point

  2000. of

  2001. the

  2002. truth

  2003. to

  2004. look

  2005. to

  2006. the

  2007. truth

  2008. so

  2009. that

  2010. we

  2011. see

  2012. God

  2013. and

  2014. engage

  2015. with

  2016. him

  2017. it's

  2018. about

  2019. communion

  2020. with

  2021. him

  2022. Paul

  2023. does

  2024. not

  2025. just

  2026. teach

  2027. or

  2028. study

  2029. truth

  2030. without

  2031. using

  2032. it

  2033. immediately

  2034. as a

  2035. basis

  2036. for the

  2037. praise

  2038. of

  2039. God

  2040. he

  2041. never

  2042. treats

  2043. truth

  2044. as

  2045. something

  2046. just to be

  2047. known

  2048. something to

  2049. be debated

  2050. with

  2051. something

  2052. or even

  2053. just to be

  2054. applied

  2055. but as a

  2056. gateway

  2057. into

  2058. praise

  2059. and so

  2060. if you

  2061. study

  2062. great

  2063. doctrines

  2064. like

  2065. God's

  2066. sovereignty

  2067. and

  2068. human

  2069. responsibility

  2070. and

  2071. election

  2072. and all

  2073. that

  2074. sort

  2075. of

  2076. stuff

  2077. you

  2078. study

  2079. all

  2080. of

  2081. those

  2082. things

  2083. and

  2084. never

  2085. works

  2086. over

  2087. into

  2088. worship

  2089. for you

  2090. you've

  2091. totally

  2092. missed

  2093. the point

  2094. of it

  2095. all

  2096. and

  2097. it

  2098. itself

  2099. the fact

  2100. that it

  2101. never

  2102. flows

  2103. over

  2104. to

  2105. worship

  2106. is

  2107. in

  2108. itself

  2109. and

  2110. I

  2111. say

  2112. this

  2113. gently

  2114. an

  2115. indication

  2116. of a

  2117. hard

  2118. heart

  2119. now

  2120. is the

  2121. day

  2122. for

  2123. humility

  2124. now

  2125. is the

  2126. day

  2127. to

  2128. confess

  2129. that

  2130. and

  2131. to

  2132. surrender

  2133. to

  2134. Christ

  2135. the

  2136. God

  2137. you

  2138. don't

  2139. know

  2140. fully

  2141. Paul

  2142. never

  2143. treats

  2144. truth

  2145. just as

  2146. something

  2147. to be

  2148. known

  2149. or

  2150. applied

  2151. but as

  2152. a gateway

  2153. to

  2154. praise

  2155. of

  2156. God

  2157. we

  2158. are

  2159. never

  2160. to

  2161. study

  2162. the

  2163. Bible

  2164. or

  2165. to

  2166. study

  2167. God

  2168. in

  2169. a

  2170. detached

  2171. cool

  2172. manner

  2173. we

  2174. must

  2175. let

  2176. ourselves

  2177. be

  2178. disturbed

  2179. we

  2180. must

  2181. let

  2182. ourselves

  2183. to be

  2184. confronted

  2185. comforted

  2186. and

  2187. challenged

  2188. by

  2189. the

  2190. truth

  2191. we

  2192. must

  2193. always

  2194. allow

  2195. ourselves

  2196. to

  2197. feel

  2198. its

  2199. power

  2200. thirdly

  2201. truth

  2202. that

  2203. exalts

  2204. God

  2205. leads

  2206. to

  2207. the

  2208. greatest

  2209. joy

  2210. in

  2211. life

  2212. Paul

  2213. does

  2214. not

  2215. find

  2216. the

  2217. deepest

  2218. impulses

  2219. for

  2220. praise

  2221. here

  2222. by

  2223. looking

  2224. at

  2225. human

  2226. accomplishments

  2227. praise

  2228. comes to

  2229. the degree

  2230. that we

  2231. see

  2232. our

  2233. weakness

  2234. we see

  2235. our

  2236. impotence

  2237. and our

  2238. complete

  2239. dependency

  2240. upon

  2241. God

  2242. when we

  2243. understand

  2244. our

  2245. smallness

  2246. our

  2247. limitation

  2248. and his

  2249. limitlessness

  2250. and his

  2251. bigness

  2252. in

  2253. other

  2254. words

  2255. the

  2256. doctrines

  2257. of

  2258. God's

  2259. complete

  2260. sovereignty

  2261. in

  2262. salvation

  2263. are

  2264. what

  2265. leads

  2266. Paul

  2267. here

  2268. to

  2269. the

  2270. greatest

  2271. joy

  2272. and

  2273. praise

  2274. we

  2275. have

  2276. never

  2277. given

  2278. God

  2279. anything

  2280. he

  2281. owes

  2282. us

  2283. nothing

  2284. these

  2285. are

  2286. the

  2520. you

  2521. and

  2525. with

  2526. Paul

  2527. we

  2529. don't

  2530. need

  2531. to be

  2533. about

  2534. that

  2535. we

  2536. don't

  2543. everything

  2544. about

  2545. him

  2546. and

  2547. his

  2548. plan

  2549. he

  2551. revealed

  2552. enough

  2553. for

  2555. to

  2556. be

  2557. confident

  2558. in

  2559. him

  2560. he

  2561. is

  2565. trustworthy

  2566. he

  2567. is

  2568. merciful

  2569. he

  2570. is

  2571. righteous

  2572. we

  2573. praise

  2574. him

  2575. for

  2576. all

  2577. that

  2578. he

  2579. has

  2580. revealed

  2581. and

  2582. we

  2583. praise

  2584. him

  2585. that

  2586. there

  2587. is

  2588. so

  2589. much

  2590. more

  2591. that

  2592. he

  2593. has

  2594. not

  2595. revealed

  2596. we

  2597. may

  2598. not

  2599. be

  2600. able

  2601. to

  2602. understand

  2603. everything

  2604. about

  2605. him

  2606. and

  2607. his

  2608. ways

  2609. but

  2610. we

  2611. are

  2612. able

  2613. to

  2614. marvel

  2615. at

  2616. him

  2617. and

  2618. so

  2619. we

  2620. echo

  2621. with

  2622. the

  2623. apostle

  2624. Paul

  2625. in

  2626. verse

  2627. 36

  2628. to

  2629. him

  2630. be

  2631. glory

  2632. forever
