  1. During the Song Dynasty of China, which began in 1960 AD and lasted until 1279,

  2. Fan Zhong Yuen spent nearly 40 years as a noble scholar official.

  3. He was appointed to be the prime minister over the entire emperor, but later demoted.

  4. He firmly believed that governing officials were the first to worry the worries of all under heaven,

  5. and the last to enjoy its joy.

  6. And this and his reform ensured the Song Dynasty builds on the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty

  7. and left a long-lasting impact on the philosophy of governing and management of a fast country like China.

  8. A friend tried to persuade him to ease off on his reform and be careful about all the political enemy he has stirred up for himself.

  9. And he replied with a poem with this line,

  10. Better to ramassade and die than keep silent and live.

  11. Bringing reform that would benefit all under heaven was so important to him that he was not free to keep silent.

  12. Even though his speak up means demotion or death, but far better than keeping quiet and stay alive.

  13. Today, people get into politics and governing jobs for what they can get out of it.

  14. But Fan Zhong Yuen's idea for a government official is unheard of in modern society, in the East or in the West.

  15. His realization of the limitation of his freedom is even a rare commodity of our current Western culture.

  16. Fan treats liberty for the betterment of his countrymen.

  17. On the other side, many Western people mix independence and freedom together.

  18. Westerners consider themselves free and will protest like William Wallace at the War of Scottish Independence.

  19. They may take my life, but they will never take our freedom.

  20. Or Arthur Scott, one of the United States founding fathers, Patrick Henry,

  21. give me liberty or give me death.

  22. As both calls for their countrymen to break free of their motherland, England.

  23. The same pride has echoed around many countries last few years.

  24. As the world deal with COVID-19 and government restrictions,

  25. people protest that no government or anyone should have the right to tell them what to think or how to behave.

  26. Our modern view of freedom is one of autonomy and make freedom the highest value of human existence.

  27. People define freedom as the absence of any limitations or constraints.

  28. The fewer boundaries they have on their choices and actions, the freer they will feel.

  29. As we carry on our vision series in looking at Jesus is all about life,

  30. we will look at Jesus is all about freedom today.

  31. I want to highlight four observations about modern view of freedom

  32. and suggest two ways to embrace freedom.

  33. Freedom is defined as doing whatever I want without constraint.

  34. Freedom is defined as a way to make freedom.

  35. Freedom is defined as a way to make freedom.

  36. This definition will only work if there is only just one thing called freedom

  37. that either you can have or do not have.

  38. However, there are numerous freedoms at different stages of life journey

  39. and no one can have them all.

  40. We all want to be free from illness or sickness

  41. and live long enough to enjoy a sustained loving relationship with family and friends.

  42. However, if you like to eat wherever you want to

  43. and it causes a problem with your health,

  44. you will have to make an obvious choice to limit and change your eating habit.

  45. Likewise, you pursue a career or profession to ensure an income

  46. that allows you the freedom to choose your living standard and your lessons.

  47. You will have to sacrifice innumerable other freedoms of time and money.

  48. If you speak with anyone who has just started uni this year

  49. or is finishing the course,

  50. you will know firsthand what it is like to make those sacrifices.

  51. Freedom is not what our culture tells us.

  52. Genuine freedom comes only from strategically losing some freedoms to gain others.

  53. You should ask which freedom is more important,

  54. the more truly liberating.

  55. At the same time, ask yourself,

  56. who has sacrificially invested in your life

  57. to ensure that you are not being unjust?

  58. We are all products of a family and a community

  59. that invests much time and love in us.

  60. Much of it happened even before we can speak

  61. or can now remember.

  62. As a child,

  63. when we become injured or sick,

  64. or as we age,

  65. our need and dependence on others increases,

  66. making believing in an absolute individual autonomy

  67. a cruel and unjust choice.

  68. No one is ever only responsible for themselves.

  69. We all share responsibility for and to others.

  70. What John Donne wrote in his poem in 1624,

  71. no man is an island and tire of itself.

  72. Any man's death diminishes me

  73. because I am involved in mankind,

  74. still ring true today.

  75. Modern freedom lives on the principle

  76. that everyone should be free to live as they desire,

  77. as long as they do not harm anyone else.

  78. We no longer need to impose a set of moral rights or wrongs

  79. on anyone if people abide to this harm principle.

  80. The freedom of choice will become a self-correcting absolute

  81. that guides living together without needing any value judgment.

  82. Under this principle,

  83. freedom is the only unconditional good and moral absolute of our society

  84. that should hold a need.

  85. Michael Kahneman of Harvard Law Society denies it as an empty concept

  86. because it cannot stand alone.

  87. It leads us first to define what good and thriving human life is

  88. and agree on what harm is for it to work.

  89. Whether freedom is good or bad

  90. depends entirely on the particular substantive cause

  91. on behalf of which freedom is involved.

  92. Our challenge today

  93. is not to follow the culturally dominant view of freedom from

  94. without any definition of what our freedom is for.

  95. We must also ensure we do not join the crowd

  96. to perpetuate a publicly shaming people or groups

  97. to press our moral beliefs about harm on them.

  98. Freedom of choice cannot stand alone as a guide to a behavior

  99. even with its full intention of not harming other people.

  100. theologian Tim Keller

  101. Tim Keller observed that

  102. the harm principle is useless

  103. as a guide and untrustworthy.

  104. And he also warns

  105. freedom as is widely collected in our society

  106. is corrosive to humanity in general

  107. and to enduring committed love relationship in particular.

  108. He came to this conclusion

  109. drawing on Jonathan Head's

  110. work titled

  111. Happiness

  112. Hypothesis

  113. Hey, right

  114. An ideology of extreme personal freedom

  115. can be dangerous

  116. because it encourages people

  117. to leave homes, jobs, cities, and marriage

  118. in search of personal and professional fulfillment

  119. thereby breaking the relationship

  120. that were properly the best hope for such fulfillment.

  121. His happiness research

  122. confirmed the importance of strong social relationship

  123. in strengthening the immune system

  124. extending life

  125. speeding up recovery from surgery

  126. and reduce the risk of depression

  127. and anxiety disorders.

  128. Deep down

  129. we all sense the need

  130. to interact and intertwine with others.

  131. We need the gift and take

  132. we need to belong.

  133. What would happen

  134. if everyone ran off to pursue their freedom?

  135. Family would fall apart

  136. neighborhood association would collapse

  137. and the erosion of voluntary

  138. and selfish community

  139. will necessitate

  140. the soft tyranny

  141. of a growing bureaucratic state

  142. where individuals are powerless.

  143. Being honest

  144. generous

  145. and public spirit

  146. being faithful

  147. to your spouse and children

  148. will regularly infringe

  149. on your happiness

  150. and freedom.

  151. However

  152. a more robust

  153. and cohesive government

  154. is the only alternative

  155. if anyone

  156. protects their independence

  157. and stops doing these things.

  158. The harm

  159. of emphasizing

  160. personal freedom

  161. above community

  162. commitment

  163. could eventually

  164. be the loss

  165. of liberty

  166. and independence.

  167. Too much

  168. individual freedom

  169. leads to increased

  170. government control

  171. over the whole group

  172. because no one

  173. is willing to sacrifice

  174. for the better good

  175. of the collectives.

  176. Any

  177. authorities

  178. organizations

  179. or institutions

  180. that impose

  181. rules and regulations

  182. are often perceived

  183. as an enemy

  184. of freedom.

  185. Christian

  186. is often seen

  187. as an arch enemy.

  188. many people

  189. reckon

  190. Christianity

  191. requires people

  192. to recognize

  193. their insufficiency

  194. and turn their back

  195. on their autonomies.

  196. Autonomics

  197. seemingly

  198. happy life.

  199. It stipulates

  200. people

  201. to be born

  202. as human beings

  203. who understand

  204. their dependency

  205. on something

  206. more significant.

  207. They consider that

  208. as a great

  209. infringement

  210. on their freedom.

  211. if that's

  212. what you think

  213. Christianity

  214. is all about

  215. let me encourage you

  216. to scan

  217. the Christianity

  218. explained QR code

  219. in front of you

  220. and find out

  221. the true meaning

  222. of Christianity.

  223. Christianity

  224. being the

  225. arch enemy

  226. of freedom

  227. is a case

  228. of mistaken

  229. identity.

  230. You should give

  231. Christianity

  232. the benefit

  233. of doubt

  234. and find the truth.

  235. the only thing

  236. that generally

  237. cannot coexist

  238. with the contemporary

  239. sense of freedom

  240. is not religion

  241. but our need

  242. for love

  243. and worship.

  244. Keller says it well

  245. there is no

  246. greater feeling

  247. of liberation

  248. than to free

  249. and be loved

  250. well.

  251. The affirmation

  252. that comes

  253. from love

  254. liberates

  255. your fear

  256. and self-doubt.

  257. it frees you

  258. from having

  259. to face

  260. the world

  261. alone.

  262. Your friend

  263. and mate

  264. will be crucial

  265. to helping you

  266. achieve many

  267. of your goals

  268. in life.

  269. In all

  270. these ways

  271. love

  272. is liberating

  273. perhaps

  274. the most

  275. liberating thing

  276. but the minute

  277. you get into

  278. a love relationship

  279. and the deeper

  280. and more intimate

  281. and the more

  282. wonderful it gets

  283. the more

  284. you also have

  285. to give up

  286. your independence.

  287. when you love

  288. someone

  289. you are not

  290. free.

  291. You will always

  292. have the well-being

  293. and the happiness

  294. of that someone

  295. on your mind.

  296. You will think

  297. of way to please.

  298. If the feeling

  299. and giving

  300. are not mutually

  301. reciprocal

  302. the relationship

  303. will become

  304. exploitative

  305. and you will feel

  306. more trapped

  307. wondering why

  308. the relationship

  309. is not working

  310. and what else

  311. you could have done.

  312. You might go

  313. from being anxious

  314. about staying

  315. in a committed

  316. loving relationship

  317. to consistently

  318. dipping in

  319. and out

  320. of relationship

  321. trying to stay

  322. afloat

  323. to avoid

  324. being so

  325. hopelessly

  326. devoted to someone.

  327. you will move

  328. into that direction

  329. especially

  330. if you want

  331. to be true

  332. to the contemporary

  333. sense of freedom

  334. and be your own

  335. master.

  336. However

  337. the more

  338. you want

  339. to master

  340. your freedom

  341. the more

  342. you will realize

  343. you are not free

  344. or able

  345. to be the master.

  346. Over the last

  347. few weeks

  348. we have pointed out

  349. that everyone

  350. has an inner

  351. urge

  352. to find love

  353. meaning

  354. and satisfaction.

  355. Humans

  356. are frustrated

  357. and trapped

  358. because we are

  359. looking at the

  360. wrong thing

  361. and wrong place.

  362. We look to

  363. created things

  364. rather than

  365. to God

  366. to address

  367. that urge.

  368. We are

  369. our worst enemy

  370. regarding

  371. autonomous

  372. freedom

  373. because we do

  374. not just have

  375. an inner urge

  376. to find love

  377. meaning

  378. and satisfaction.

  379. We also

  380. worship

  381. what we identify

  382. as the source

  383. of them

  384. and we end up

  385. being controlled

  386. by it.

  387. I encourage you

  388. to check out

  389. our website

  390. and listen again

  391. to the sermon

  392. from the last

  393. two Sundays.

  394. They outline

  395. humanity's

  396. predicament

  397. regarding meaning

  398. and satisfaction

  399. and what we can do

  400. to embrace them.

  401. Contemporary

  402. people

  403. believe that

  404. instead of

  405. allowing religious

  406. authority

  407. or tradition

  408. to dictate

  409. to them

  410. they should

  411. be free

  412. to think

  413. or live

  414. as they choose.

  415. But the reality

  416. is none

  417. of us

  418. are free agents.

  419. We are all

  420. worshipping

  421. and serving

  422. something.

  423. There is no

  424. such thing

  425. as freedom

  426. without limitation.

  427. To embrace

  428. freedom

  429. not in the sense

  430. of our

  431. contemporary culture

  432. tell us

  433. we should look

  434. for the right

  435. the liberating

  436. constraint

  437. that fits

  438. our nature

  439. and design.

  440. We should

  441. consider

  442. which master

  443. will affirm

  444. cherish

  445. empower

  446. and honor

  447. us

  448. and which

  449. one will

  450. exploit

  451. and abuse

  452. us.

  453. Which master

  454. is the right

  455. master for our

  456. hearts and lives

  457. and so brings

  458. those right

  459. constraints.

  460. Let me

  461. encourage you

  462. if you feel

  463. somewhat frustrated

  464. about your

  465. relationship

  466. and trapped

  467. in your life

  468. and on the

  469. issue of freedom

  470. I do not

  471. say it in a

  472. nasty or

  473. sarcastic sense.

  474. Many modern

  475. people try

  476. to deny

  477. an obvious

  478. fact

  479. laid out

  480. in today's

  481. passage

  482. read from

  483. Romans 8

  484. 16 to 21

  485. that we are

  486. God's children.

  487. He created

  488. us

  489. and it

  490. says God

  491. subject us

  492. to frustration

  493. for a purpose.

  494. Verse 20

  495. read

  496. for the creation

  497. was subject

  498. to freedom

  499. to frustration

  500. not by its

  501. own choice

  502. but by the

  503. will of the

  504. one who

  505. was subjected

  506. in hope

  507. that the

  508. creation itself

  509. would be

  510. liberated

  511. from its

  512. bondage

  513. to decay

  514. and brought

  515. into freedom

  516. and glory

  517. of the

  518. children of

  519. God.

  520. Your

  521. frustration

  522. in life

  523. are God's

  524. grace

  525. to you.

  526. God put

  527. them there

  528. in hope

  529. of liberating

  530. you from

  531. your bondage

  532. to decay

  533. and bringing

  534. you into

  535. the freedom

  536. and glory

  537. of the

  538. children of

  539. God.

  540. God created

  541. us to know,

  542. serve,

  543. and love

  544. him.

  545. Trying to

  546. live for

  547. anything else

  548. will lead

  549. to slavery

  550. like running

  551. on a

  552. treadmill

  553. that gets

  554. no way.

  555. When you

  556. begin to

  557. live for

  558. God

  559. and follow

  560. his will,

  561. you will

  562. become who

  563. you are

  564. meant to

  565. be,

  566. realizing

  567. your original

  568. designs.

  569. love for

  570. God.

  571. Why is it

  572. that when

  573. you fall

  574. in love,

  575. you take

  576. the initiative

  577. to discover

  578. a list of

  579. all the

  580. things your

  581. loved one

  582. loves and

  583. hates?

  584. Then you

  585. go all

  586. out to

  587. say and

  588. do the

  589. things that

  590. delight them.

  591. Why do

  592. you gladly

  593. accept doing

  594. their will

  595. rather than

  596. your own,

  597. the little

  598. limits on

  599. your behavior?

  600. it's because

  601. you have

  602. put your

  603. joy and

  604. happiness

  605. into the

  606. joy and

  607. enjoyment of

  608. the other.

  609. You are

  610. happy to

  611. the degree

  612. they are.

  613. You have

  614. come to

  615. discover the

  616. pleasure of

  617. giving pleasure.

  618. You don't

  619. follow their

  620. will as a

  621. means to

  622. get other

  623. things you

  624. want.

  625. Their love

  626. and joy is

  627. the main

  628. thing you

  629. want.

  630. In our

  631. relationship

  632. with God,

  633. Jesus took

  634. the first

  635. step towards

  636. humanity.

  637. He saved

  638. us at

  639. an infinite

  640. cost to

  641. himself.

  642. He emptied

  643. himself of

  644. his glory and

  645. took on a

  646. humble form to

  647. serve our

  648. best interests.

  649. When you

  650. grasp and

  651. understand what

  652. God has

  653. done for

  654. you, it

  655. creates a

  656. grateful joy

  657. that inwardly

  658. moves you to

  659. want to

  660. please,

  661. know,

  662. and resemble

  663. him.

  664. when you

  665. put your

  666. happiness into

  667. his happiness,

  668. serving him

  669. will become

  670. your perfect

  671. liberation.

  672. The concept

  673. of freedom

  674. in the

  675. Bible comes

  676. through having

  677. the right

  678. constraint.

  679. The

  680. stipulations

  681. in the

  682. Bible are

  683. the list of

  684. God's love

  685. and hate

  686. by which

  687. you can

  688. please and

  689. come to be

  690. like him.

  691. God's

  692. will.

  693. That is why we

  694. encourage and

  695. urge everyone

  696. to grow in

  697. their faith,

  698. spending regular

  699. time with God

  700. in his word

  701. and praying to

  702. him.

  703. The more you

  704. are in tune

  705. with God's

  706. will, the

  707. freer you

  708. will become

  709. as you do

  710. what you

  711. are designed

  712. to do.

  713. in the

  714. past, people

  715. intend to

  716. break free

  717. from God.

  718. They

  719. ignore God's

  720. command and

  721. exchange God's

  722. glory with

  723. created things.

  724. So God

  725. allowed their

  726. earthly master

  727. to capture

  728. them so they

  729. will experience

  730. the slavery

  731. physically and

  732. understand what

  733. exactly losing

  734. freedom is.

  735. after some

  736. time, God

  737. allowed a

  738. more benevolent

  739. master to

  740. govern over

  741. his people

  742. and to let

  743. his people

  744. return to

  745. the place

  746. he set for

  747. them.

  748. God said

  749. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 48:12

  750. 48, verse

  751. 12, that

  752. he created

  753. all of us.

  754. I am he,

  755. I am the

  756. first and I

  757. am the last.

  758. My own hand

  759. laid the

  760. foundation of

  761. the earth and

  762. my right hand

  763. spread out the

  764. heavens.

  765. This God

  766. is a God

  767. that Christianity

  768. follows.

  769. Come as

  770. Jesus to

  771. redeem us and

  772. call us to

  773. return to

  774. him.

  775. This is what

  776. the Lord

  777. says, your

  778. Redeemer, the

  779. Holy One of

  780. Israel, I am

  781. the Lord your

  782. God who

  783. teaches you

  784. what is best

  785. for you, who

  786. will direct you

  787. in the way you

  788. should go.

  789. If only you

  790. have paid

  791. attention to

  792. my commands,

  793. your peace

  794. would have been

  795. like a river.

  796. Your well-being

  797. like the ways

  798. of the sea.

  799. Jesus knows

  800. what is best

  801. for us and

  802. does not hold

  803. back from

  804. teaching us

  805. what they

  806. are and

  807. directing how

  808. we should

  809. live.

  810. He keeps

  811. doing that

  812. today through

  813. his commands.

  814. If only you

  815. pay attention

  816. to them and

  817. follow God's

  818. will of and

  819. in a desire to

  820. love our

  821. Redeemer, you

  822. will increasingly

  823. sense that you

  824. are also becoming

  825. who you are

  826. decided to be

  827. by your

  828. creator.

  829. In Matthew

    Matthew 11:28–30

  830. chapter 11,

  831. verse 28 to

  832. 30, Jesus

  833. calls us to

  834. come to me,

  835. all you who

  836. are weary

  837. and burdened,

  838. and I will

  839. give you rest.

  840. Take my yoke

  841. upon you and

  842. learn from me,

  843. for I am gentle

  844. and humble in

  845. heart, and you

  846. will find rest

  847. for your soul,

  848. for my yoke is

  849. easy, my burden

  850. is light.

  851. Jesus essentially

  852. tells us that he

  853. calls only to do

  854. those things we

  855. were created to

  856. do, and you

  857. will find that

  858. his yoke is

  859. easy.

  860. He put on us

  861. the burden to

  862. follow him, but

  863. he had already

  864. paid the price, so

  865. we will be

  866. forgiven when you

  867. fail.

  868. Jesus has

  869. taken off us

  870. the burdens

  871. that other

  872. people have.

  873. He removed the

  874. burden of earning

  875. our salvation

  876. through striving

  877. and effort, and

  878. the burdens of

  879. guilt and shame

  880. from past

  881. failures.

  882. Jesus has

  883. taken off the

  884. burden of

  885. proving ourselves

  886. worthy of

  887. love.

  888. He is the

  889. only Lord and

  890. Master who

  891. will satisfy

  892. you if you

  893. find him, and

  894. if you fail

  895. him, he will

  896. forgive you.

  897. Without

  898. Jesus,

  899. Christianity is

  900. exploitative,

  901. because God

  902. will not

  903. change, and

  904. you will have

  905. to do all

  906. the submitting,

  907. repenting, and

  908. making all the

  909. sacrifice.

  910. But in

  911. Jesus, God

  912. says, I

  913. will adjust

  914. to you.

  915. I will

  916. sacrifice for

  917. you.

  918. I will give

  919. up my glory

  920. and immortality

  921. in becoming

  922. human, and

  923. all light and

  924. joy, and

  925. my very

  926. life on

  927. the cross.

  928. He was

  929. nailed fast

  930. to it, so

  931. he could not

  932. move.

  933. How is that

  934. for giving

  935. up your

  936. freedom?

  937. I can

  938. invite the

  939. music team to

  940. come up.

  941. Christianity

  942. is the only

  943. religion that

  944. claims God

  945. gave up his

  946. freedom so we

  947. could experience

  948. the ultimate

  949. freedom from

  950. evil and death

  951. itself.

  952. Therefore, we

  953. can trust

  954. Jesus.

  955. He

  956. sacrifices

  957. his

  958. independence

  959. for you, so

  960. that you can

  961. sacrifice yours

  962. for him.

  963. And when you

  964. do, you

  965. will find it

  966. is the

  967. ultimate,

  968. infinite,

  969. liberating

  970. constraint.

  971. If the

  972. Son sets

  973. you free,

  974. you will be

  975. free indeed.

  976. Amen.

  977. Amen.

  978. Amen.

  979. Amen.

  980. Amen.

  981. Amen.

  982. Amen.

  983. Amen.

  984. Amen.

  985. Amen.

  986. Amen.

  987. Amen.

  988. Amen.

  989. Amen.

  990. Amen.

  991. Amen.
